to push on—as long as you ignore Manager Blaine Williams saying that the project could stay on track with a three-tofour-week delay for public input. “We’ve been told if we don’t move now, we’ll be guaranteeing two football seasons,” Commissioner Sharyn Dickerson said, just minutes after Williams confirmed that Link’s motion would not delay completion.

As with public spaces, the idea of a downtown circulator has been kicked around in Athens for years, too, with little to no progress. Knoxville has not one, but three trolley lines running in and around the downtown/UT area, including a line to a nearby Publix and Walmart. “It eliminates people needing a car, or allows couples to go down from two cars to one,” Hummel said.

And here’s the best part: They’re free! (“It can’t be done!” cry the naysayers anytime someone in Athens raises the idea. “Too expensive! Where would we get the money?”)

Well, Knoxville found it. And so could Athens—if we really wanted to. f

Odds and Ends Flagpole went to press before Monday night’s college football championship game, but regardless of the outcome, the city won’t be throwing the Bulldogs a parade, Denson told the Athens Banner-Herald, citing the cost, lack of preparation time and a previously scheduled Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade on Monday, Jan. 15. At least one downtown business owner was dawg-gone mad (sorry) about the decision: “I only see positive financial impact for the city and business owners with a parade being held,” Ryan Myers wrote to Flagpole. “You can reference the Christmas parade and what it brings downtown.

Despite the financial impact, it’s a great opportunity to bring the community together. To say they don’t have time is inexcusable because they’ve had since the SEC championship to begin planning.” However, Denson later backtracked somewhat, and Russell Edwards told Flagpole he’s working with fellow commission candidate Tim Denson and Link to organize a privately funded parade if the city won’t do it. What Will the Legislature Accomplish?

TRANSIT, ADOPTION AND RURAL BROADBAND ARE ON THE AGENDA

By Tom Crawford tcrawford@gareport.com If you ask a state legislator what their priorities are for the upcoming session, they’ll solemnly say something along the lines of, “Pass a balanced state budget.”

That’s the same thing as saying that one of your priorities for the next day is to breathe oxygen or drink water—that is always going to occur, unless you happen to drop dead unexpectedly. Legislators can always be counted on to pass a balanced budget. So let’s move on to other topics.

The General Assembly session that convened this week could end up being dominated by personality conflicts between one chamber and the other, and even within one chamber, because of the people who are running for something else.

The state Senate is headed by Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, who is running for governor.

The upper chamber includes Sen. Michael Williams (R-Cumming), who is also running for governor, and Sen. Josh McKoon (R-Columbus), who is running for secretary of state. There is also Senate Majority Leader Bill Cowsert (R-Athens), whose wife is the sister of Brian Kemp’s wife. Kemp, the current secretary of state, is yet another candidate for governor. This could create some tensions between Cowsert and Cagle.

Williams will no doubt spend much of the session taking verbal potshots at Cagle. Williams has already been denouncing Cagle as a “career politician” and the “swamp” that Donald Trump is trying to drain.

McKoon has been trying for years to get a “religious liberty” bill enacted into law.

Cagle has already signed a pledge that he will sign such a bill if he’s elected governor.

On the other side of the rotunda, however, is House Speaker David Ralston. He doesn’t like the idea of spending time on the religious liberty issue, especially with

the state trying to persuade Amazon to locate a corporate headquarters here.

Ralston wants the Senate to pass a bill that the House of Representatives approved last year overhauling adoption laws. It stalled when a few Republican senators tried to amend it to allow private adoption agencies to refuse for religious reasons to deal with same-sex couples.

Both Ralston and Gov. Nathan Deal are urging a “clean” adoption bill that doesn’t get dragged down by religious liberty issues.

Ralston has the advantage of being able to hold up House votes on any Senate bills until that adoption bill is approved.

“I think the bill’s ready to be passed and I would encourage them [the Senate leadership] to do that,” Ralston said. “I think it would set a good tone for the session if they can get that done quickly.”

If legislators are able to move past these personal squabbles, they might expand mass transit in metro Atlanta and other around the state. For years, lawmakers from outside the metro area would sneer at MARTA and the idea of mass transit, but that attitude is changing dramatically.

“If you’re going to be competitive for economic development in the future, if you want Amazon or companies like Amazon, you have to have transit,” said Rep. Kevin Tanner (R-Dawsonville), chairman of the House Transportation Committee.

There is support among legislative leaders for finding a way to make internet broadband services more widely available in rural Georgia. They don’t appear eager to commit any state funding toward this task, however, which could mean that it’s a problem that continues to be a problem.

There’s no question legislators will pass a state budget. Whether they accomplish anything else is an open question. f

fronts,” but that seems a little too harsh. The one organization that has filed official papers is called the Presidential House and proposes some sort of weird shadow government in Charleston, SC with Nathaniel as president. Troy called it “unhinged, fantastical nonsense.”

“When I started the Presidential House, I started volunteering for the Obama campaign,” Nathaniel said when I called him. He acknowledged that the original scheme was kind of goofy, but said it came from his enthusiasm for Obama. “I was 16 or 17 and was very excited, and so I started something called the Presidential House to get out in my community.”

But for Nathaniel, inexperience is part of the point of protest.

“Many of us, especially young people in the political realm, don’t really get our voices heard because it’s mostly a ‘who has more experience’ type thing, versus a protest where we’re able to organize it, either locally or nationally, and our voices can be heard much easier there than working with politics,” Nathaniel said. But he said he is still interested in electoral politics and local issues.

“My goal was to run for United States Congress this year, but I decided not to because Annabelle Robertson, who is way more qualified than I am, decided to run [against Republican Joe “You Lie” Wilson]. So I decided to put my action behind her and get out and protest.”

Critics point to the “Rally at the Border” in San Ysidro, CA, the only other rally Nathaniel has organized. It failed amid concerns of top-down organizing that didn’t take the needs of the community into consideration and could have put a lot of people at risk.

Once news of the border rally became public, people began demanding to see the permit for the march on Washington. Nathaniel says he has a permit and has met with D.C. police, Park Police, the Secret Service and the FBI. But for the local organizers in San Ysidro and in D.C., working with the authorities is precisely the problem.

Washington’s police department threw more than 70 grenades and emptied hundreds of canisters of pepper spray against protesters at the Disrupt J20 protest during the inauguration. At a right-wing rally recently, Park Police claimed to be working with right-wing militias.

“In D.C., we do not like interfacing with police,” Brendan Orsinger, an organizer in D.C., said on the phone. “We don’t like the idea of the state giving permission for us to march.

And we don’t need it… It’s actually much safer not to have police involved in the planning of the march.”

Orsinger has been vociferous in his criticism of the march. But like Troy, he doesn’t see a conspiracy. “There are good intentions here. But one of the things that I learned over the last year is that good intentions are not good enough to make change happen in this country,” he said.

This raises the larger question: What are protests for?

The prosecution of the nearly 200 people charged with rioting after the inauguration may have had a chilling effect, but it has also shown the effectiveness of protest—if the U.S. Attorney’s office works that hard to shut them down, then they must have some power. So, the question becomes: How can a larger movement bring Russiagaters like Troy, local grassroots organizers like Orsinger and enthusiastic young people like Nathaniel together? If people really want to resist and not just #Resist, they need to answer this question while embracing a diversity of tactics and figuring out how to form coalitions. f

Donald Trump’s second year in office begins like every new Star Wars movie: with the Resistance in tatters, trying to rebuild. There is plenty of internet #Resistance, ranging from insane conspiracy theories to serious commentary and organizing—but this online profusion has resulted in IRL confusion.

It’s certainly not anywhere near Homage to Catalonia levels, but dissension among the opposition to Trump is fierce.

The divide is mirrored in the Bernie/Hillary split—but it is also something deeper and something that moves further to the fringes. It, in many ways, mirrors the new divisions within the far right, where the alt-lite litigiously differentiates itself from the more openly racist alt-right.

Last year, there was the Disrupt J20 protest on Inauguration Day, which led to the prosecution of nearly 200 individuals, identified by the police and the prosecution as anarchists. The next day, hundreds of thousands of people filled the streets for the women’s march. There is little sympathy or support between these groups, with many anarchists and hardcore organizers mocking the feel-good liberal desire to #Resist by supporting the FBI, intelligence agencies and Robert Mueller. Liberals, on the other hand, attempt to distance themselves from anyone further to the left than they are for fear of being tainted by the anarchist stench of hippies. As a result, liberals have been far more concerned about Putin’s abuse of reporters than they have about the prosecution of journalists who were covering the J20 protests.

Though that case has been largely ignored by the mainstream press, it has had an immeasurable Lawrence Nathaniel effect on the state of protest— and created fear, distrust and division on the left. Over the last couple weeks, some of these tensions have bubbled up in largely online debates about a real-life rally slated for Washington, DC on Jan. 27. The “People’s March on Washington,” also called “The Impeachment March,” has gained a lot of online support—25,000 are “interested” on Facebook and more than 2,000 say they are going—and it has gotten a lot of pushback.

The rally was organized by a group called People Demand Action, which is headed up by a 24-year-old AfricanAmerican man named Lawrence Nathaniel, a big-thinking, marketing-minded millennial leftist who says he worked on the Bernie Sanders campaign and, after he got over his disappointment following the primary loss, for Hillary Clinton. When Trump won, he began to think about what he could do. One of the things he set about organizing—he has a long list of sometimes improbable plans and goals, including opening a free private school in Bamberg, SC—was this march calling for the impeachment of the president.

But as interest in the march grew—and organizers began trying to raise money—so did the questions surrounding it. I first heard questions about the march when Dave Troy, a technologist and writer in Baltimore, wrote me about it. Troy is deeply concerned about Russian trolls and “active measures.” When he saw some of the confusion surrounding the event, he initially thought it might be the result of some Kremlin campaign. But when he started to look into it, he attributed the perceived failings of the organizers to inexperience rather than malfeasance.

Nathaniel has set up a number of organizations to promote the march and his various other endeavors. People have been calling them “shell organizations” or “false

he Georgia legislature’s 2018 session gaveled in Monday, and for the first time in 20 years— back when everyone was a Democrat—every part of deep-blue Athens is represented by a Democrat in the state House of Representatives.

Two local seats held by Republicans who’d never been challenged flipped in November special elections after Regina Quick and Chuck Williams resigned to accept new state jobs. Jonathan Wallace, a software engineer for the online clothing company Stitch Fix, won outright over three Republicans in right-leaning District 119. Deborah Gonzalez, a media and entertainment lawyer, defeated a strong GOP opponent in Houston Gaines, last year’s UGA student-body president and Mayor Nancy Denson’s ex-campaign manager, despite being at a four-to-one fundraising disadvantage in a district gerrymandered to elect a Republican. Those victories surprised even many local Democrats and, along with several other wins in GOP-leaning and swing districts elsewhere, energized Democrats statewide and even nationally for the fight to come later this year.

“People do have representation now,” Gonzalez says. “And it’s gotten a lot of people excited as a motivator about what can happen in 2018.”

I’m part of an initiative called Safety Shot, which has been looking at sexual harassment in the entertainment industry in Atlanta, on film sets and TV sets, since the beginning of [2017], and we just had a big meeting with all the unions about this issue. I’m hoping with how important the entertainment industry has become in Georgia, that can help [us put] this kind of law in place.

FP: What do you think about the committee on sexual harassment that was appointed by the lieutenant governor and the speaker?

DG: It concerns me, the representation on that panel. [It consists of six men and only two women.] The House [Democratic] caucus has decided that we will create our own panel, mainly made up of women. I have offered to serve on that panel, and we’ll see when the appointments are made.

I don’t think we’ll hear anything when session begins, but it is something that’s being talked about.

How do you create a policy when the people most affected by it are not being represented? I think that’s a mistake. We need to have the right representation on these panels.

FP: After the session, you’re going to have to pretty much immediately start running for re-election. I know you’ve had folks out canvassing right after the election…

DG: Yes, we did a victory canvass just to thank people.

FP: Is that a sign of how tough you think the re-election campaign is going to be?

DG: Yes and no. I know re-election is going to be tough.

Republicans’ response to the election was, “We were bushwacked. We weren’t ready,” and I don’t think they’re going to do that again. I think they’re on notice, and they’re not going to take it for granted. So I think that’s going to make it tougher.

Going out was us being appreciative of the people’s vote and letting them know we’re there for them, making sure, again, they know how to reach out to me, how to connect with me, who I am. I’m still very active. You’ll find me out there in many places, partly because there are still many people who don’t know me, don’t know who I am, even though we won. I think that’s also a sad sign of the times, that we have so many people who don’t know who their representatives are. I think we need to change that.

In 2017, my word was “action.” In 2018, my word is “momentum,” that we can keep momentum going. Yeah, it’s nice we had a win, but we can’t be complacent, right? Every year we have to fight for these seats.

FP: What do you anticipate Republicans doing to get your seat back?

DG: Whenever you lose, there’s the tendency to want to change something, because, well, we lost, so it has to be unfair. I’m hearing rumors they’re going to redistrict the districts for me and Jonathan because they want to get the seats back. My stance is, until they do something, I’m not going to worry about it. If when I run for re-election all of a sudden my district is different, we’ll deal with that when we get to it.

I would hope that this close to the 2018 election, they would not go that way. You can’t make it more obvious, could you? And we do have a census coming up in 2020,

which seems to be the appropriate time to take a look at redistricting, and hopefully by then we do have an independent redistricting committee or something similar. I have heard some Republicans thinking about it, because if there is this wave change in politics, it’s to their benefit to talk about independent redistricting. But if the pendulum swings the other way, the Democrats have no reason to do it. We keep going back and forth, which is not right. Maybe at this time, when things are sort of in transition, maybe now is the right time to push that from both parties.

FP: We even have complaints in downtown Athens about the speed of broadband and the service, especially with a lot of the tech companies that are coming there. Is it just a rural issue or a city one, too?

JW: It’s a capacity issue. When we think about transportation issues—roads and bridges and cars and trucks and 18-wheelers—the common acknowledgement is that building more roads doesn’t solve your traffic problems, right? We’ve seen over 25 years [interstates] 75, 85, the

The adoption bill I think is something that’s very close to the speaker’s heart, and so that will be on the docket very early on.

I think we’re going to see campus carry come back up again this year. I’ve heard that people are looking to remove some of the exclusions. I feel very strongly that [law] was a mistake. We’ve already seen the validation with that bus driver who left his gun in the bathroom.

If that wasn’t the law, that never would’ve happened, and fortunately it didn’t lead to anything tragic.

I wouldn’t leave a bunch of knives around for my toddlers to play with, and anything we can do to reduce the risk, that’ll keep people safer. There’s been no evidence that more weapons makes us safer.

FP: What else do you expect to come up during the session?

DG: We know that there are some unpopular bills that might be making a comeback just because it’s an election year, like [the “religious freedom” bill], campus carry, to take out those restrictions. I feel really strongly we shouldn’t have guns on campus, period. Pop-Country Strong FOUR SONGS THAT PROVE COLE SWINDELL’S BONA FIDES

ronwood native Cole Swindell is one of the biggest country artists of the modern era. The 34-year-old’s most well-known hits, such as “Chillin’ It,” “Ain’t Worth the Whiskey” and “Middle of a Memory,” utilize standard country tropes (cold beer, relationship troubles, trucks) that might make outsiders groan. However, Swindell’s earworm hooks and instantly memorable melodies help him stand out among his contemporaries. To put it simply, though he is a country boy at heart, Cole Swindell is also a bona fide pop star.

Swindell got his start running the merch table for country luminary Luke Bryan. While on the road, Swindell picked up some songwriting skills and went on to build a career writing for acts like Bryan, Scotty McCreery, Thomas Rhett and Florida Georgia Line. But Swindell ended up reserving much of his best work for his own albums. Here’s a brief guide to some of Swindell’s major songwriting successes.

absent from the list. It’s hardly the most introspective country song you’ve ever heard, and it’s got plenty of those previously mentioned tropes sure to ruffle critics’ feathers (complete with a shout out to the troops, which comes completely out of nowhere in a song that is mostly about partying). But it’s got a big chorus for the ages, and fun lyrics worthy of a raucous, drunken singalong.

Swindell wrote “Roller Coaster” for Luke Bryan’s Crash My Party album, helping to create one of Bryan’s best and most understated songs.

Inspired by the abandoned Miracle Strip Amusement Park in Panama City Beach, FL, the song features Bryan lamenting the end of a weeklong summer romance that lingers on his mind. His emotions, as he plainly states in the chorus, are “twisted like an old beach roller coaster.” Say what you will of the simile; the song evokes wholesome, nostalgic beachside imagery that isn’t too common from Bryan or similar artists. When Bryan heard Swindell’s demo of “Roller Coaster,” he suggested that songs like this could propel him into his very own record contract.

“This Is How We Roll” might be the only good song in Florida Georgia Line’s repertoire.

Written by Swindell and featuring a verse from Bryan, “Roll” is admittedly generic

in its concept—it’s mostly about partying, with a lot of analogies involving truck parts—but certain odd details in its verses, along with an infectious chorus, make it stick to your brain like glue. Along with shoutouts to 37-inch Nitto tires, a lyrical highlight is the opening line, in which the FGL boys describe a mixtape playing in their truck that features both Hank Williams and Drake… that’s just how they roll.

Featured on his 2016 album of the same name, “You Should Be Here” is one of Swindell’s biggest hits, as well as his most personal song to date. Written in the wake of his father’s tragic death in 2013, the song reflects on how the elder Swindell would have felt if he had been able to see his son’s rise to fame. It’s a brilliantly written eulogy, featuring a surprisingly catchy hook and charming, relatable verses. One particularly cutting moment is when Swindell theorizes that his father would have taken an embarrassing amount of pictures on his phone to show off to friends, family and probably a few strangers. It’s an understated and relatable moment that gives the song weight.

The tune is a reminder that behind all the country cliches are real people trying to live the best lives they can with a soundtrack that makes them feel good. f

LAST YEAR’S RESTAURANT NEWS IN REVIEW

By Hillary Brown food@flagpole.com When I look back at the list of what restaurants and other eateries opened in Athens in 2017, it could be more impressive. Sure, there were bright spots. There always are. But I usually have an easier time picking my favorites. Maybe it’s that two places that would have made it onto the list closed before the year concluded—Peaches, back for a brief period on the Eastside spreading delight through Glenda Brown’s wonderful food, and Cafe Istanbul, an Athens branch of an Atlanta-based Turkish restaurant with three other locations that never quite found enough of an audience here, despite its fantastic eggplant and tasty pizzas.

The best meal I had all year was at Five & Ten, where Richard Neal is continuing to push the menu in botanically driven, weird and wonderful directions. If you think it’s lost its spot as the best restaurant in town, you’re wrong. No other place—and, honestly, we have serious culinary riches for a city of our size and average income—has same the combination of service, wine list, continually high level of cooking and a menu that changes constantly. That doesn’t mean it’s always flawless, but it achieves its goals a lot of the time.

New Red Bowl Asian Bistro

New things that delighted included New Red Bowl Asian Bistro, in the former Peking on the Eastside, which has an excellent and real Szechuan menu that includes frogs as a protein choice. It may seem like a slick place to get a boring noodle bowl—and it is that, too, if you just look at the lunch specials—but it also has a huge array of more interesting choices and staff who get excited when you ask for the Szechuan stuff. La Superior, a lovely bakery on Highway 29 in front of Ingles, is a great addition to the area, with soft, delicate, cream-iced pasteles sold by the slice or by the whole cake, and surprisingly good bagels.

Better on the pan dulces front and offering sandwiches and other savories, Panaderia Tacuari moved from its original location on Fritz Mar Lane to Watkinsville, across from Publix, and added a kids’ area as well as air conditioning. Athens also got a Filipino food truck, a chromed-out faceted little trailer called Manila Express that is full-on cute and makes salty, fatty, crazy flavorful dishes. If you want to figure out where it’ll be, your best bet is to find it on Instagram @manilaexpressga. And The Fish Shack, a sweet, straightforward place that is just what its name says, began frying up tastiness at Broad and Hancock Wednesday through Saturday. You can even get it delivered through Cosmic Delivery, but then you’d miss the family atmosphere.

We did get some new chains—J. Buffalo Wings, in Beechwood, which actually does a pretty good fried rice; Charlie Graingers on Epps Bridge Parkway, with a wide array of hot dogs; a branch of Atlanta’s J.R. Crickets

doing wings on Hawthorne; Roll It Up, a rolled ice cream franchise on Alps Road; approximately 1 kajillion fast food franchises on Highway 29, near Space Kroger—but in retrospect it seems like a fairly good year for independent businesses. Mama’s Boy opened a second location, in Oconee County, which is big and bright and gives them tons of space. La Michoacana… Es Natural, my favorite ice cream and paleta place, also added another branch, inside the Eastside Cali N Tito’s, and began selling its popsicles in a cooler inside Los Compadres on Prince.

1000 Faces moved into a much bigger space downtown, on Thomas Street, with food and plenty of tables, and Lindsey’s Culinary Market was just about ready to open on the ground floor of the same building. Akademia, a brewpub long in the works, started doing business near Georgia Square Mall, in the old Musician’s Warehouse, with a heavy emphasis on sours and beers incorporating a ton of flavors and some good bar nibbles, plus a kids’ menu.

Downtown, Ahi Hibachi and Poke opened next door to Athens Wok, doing quick and tasty poke bowls. Clarke’s Standard replaced the sadly missed Branded Butcher, near the Georgia Theatre, with a less interesting menu but some nicely executed twists on bar food. And The Office Sports Bar and Grill opened around the corner in the West Washington Street deck. The Chase Park warehouses got a coffee shop and snack retailer in Veronica’s Sweet Spot.

The Epps area added Woks Up, a sort of stir-fry place with goals of being a franchise.

Watkinsville got a solid pizza place in Fully Loaded Pizza Kitchen, an a.m. quick biscuit place in Suncatcher Cafe and a place for people in golf shirts to have dinner in Pour. Las Monarcas opened in a former Huddle House on Danielsville Road and Wing House Grill in Hull (with beer!). Showtime Bowl completely renovated and added food from the dudes behind The Pine, with The 11th Pin. Takorea and Copper Creek closed downtown, as did Koyla (sigh) on South Milledge, which has been replaced

by Athens Pizza, and Two Story Coffee, in Five Points, which is in the middle of being renovated into The Expat, a cocktail-heavy serious restaurant from Atlanta’s Jerry and Krista Slater. La Dolce Vita acquired new owners and a new name, Dolce Vita Trattoria Italiana, but kept many delicious preparations. Chops and Hops, Craft and Heirloom all got new chefs, the last of which, Garrett Macfalda, should have a new menu in place by the time this runs. Donna Chang’s added lunch with noodle and rice bowls, and has been serving a stellar fried eggplant dish full of Szechuan pepper.

Still to come in 2018, some sooner than others: a Chickfil-A in the former Five Guys space downtown, Caborita Cantina and Grill on Mitchell Bridge Road, Little Ice Cream Dude’s Cool World (which made its Kickstarter), Peter Dale’s Maepole on Chase Street, a second location of Sakura (in Five Points), El Barrio Tacos and Tequila in Five Points, a branch of franchise Mamoun’s Falafel out of New York, Franklin House Cafe (a coffee shop at Broad and Thomas downtown), The Falls (with chef Jarad Blanton at the helm, near Mama’s Boy No. 2) and a project from Bain Mattox in the old 1000 Faces on Barber Street (Breakfast? Soft-serve ice cream? Beer? I’ve heard a lot of things, and any of them would be welcome). Keep up with all local food news in this column and at flagpole.com. f

Only in Dreams ‘MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR’ OPENS THE DOOR TO IMAGINED WORLDS

By Jessica Smith arts@flagpole.com Capable of establishing entire new worlds, artwork offers insight into the inner workings of the mind as artists visually express their dreams and fantasies. On view for its final week at the Gallery@Hotel Indigo, “Magical Mystery Tour” presents a collection of eye-catching pieces intended to inspire the imagination. Visitors can observe and interpret the works in person until this Saturday, Jan. 13, when the group exhibition featuring six Georgia artists comes down.

Reflecting the fascinating mental activities that occur during the acts of resting and sleeping, Brian Hitselberger’s complementary “Daydream” and “Nightmare” aim to visually exemplify the unpredictable associations that happen within dream sequences. Miscellaneous components like hands, scissors, the silhouette of flowers, a spider web, water droplets and a buttondown shirt are arranged in a way that allows for the eye to bounce around and try to create its own narrative. Interestingly, Hitselberger draws portraits of figures from behind, an approach that allows him to incorporate specific individuals with a level of anonymity that won’t distract the viewer.

“These figures become an opportunity to render not necessarily a person so much as a person in thought,” says Hitselberger.

“All of my work is in some way related to an interior life, and by turning my figures around, I feel like I can allude to what’s inside them through an outside rendering.

What I’m thinking about in my work, and what I want the viewer to be thinking about in my work, is the nature of our own mental and interior life. The good, the bad and deeply strange.”

Primarily an installation artist, Dana Haugaard creates environments that physically engage visitors, often through the use of low-frequency sounds that can affect the

body depending on movement and spatial positioning. For “Magical Mystery Tour,” he contributes unusual, curved mirrors painted with concentric circle patterns inspired by these sound waves. The mirrors insert viewers directly into the pieces, visually warping the space and enhancing the interactivity of the artwork.

“The viewer is intended to be the primary aspect of the work,” says Haugaard.

“These are an attempt to provide a moment where they can see themselves in a place that is not entirely what they expected— warped, distorted environments with layers and fields of color creating visual frequencies that are augmenting the experience—and then hopefully reflect on how they exist within that space.”

needs are satiated, goals are impossible. The world exists in an arrested state of decay, exhibiting an apocalyptic affectation that grants permission for everything. This world awaits the ‘Unknown Player.’”

Illustrator Jacob Wenzka offers a glimpse into another imagined world, sharing prints that appear as pages in a new local children’s book called The Girl Who Kept Night in Her Closet. Written by Bart King, the story tells of a young girl who has a mysterious relationship with the natural world. Set in what appears to be a warm Southern landscape—indicated by a traditional-looking barn and the Spanish moss that hangs along the frame’s canopy—the tale incorporates flourishes of magic realism to explain how day turns to night. The scenes are rendered completely in grayscale, with the exception of glowing yellow fireflies and powder blue stars.

Jaime Bull materializes celestial inspiration into her pieces, which vary greatly in style from one to the next. Her largest, the 4-by-4-foot “Space Stool,” is a black-and-white striped structure resting on three legs. A glittering, collaged Saturn-esque emblem of holographic material adds a kitschy and childlike playfulness to the piece.

Her acrylic and ink drawing “Rocket Chair” presents a similar structure with busy geometric details, while two photographic works collage stones and lichens into alien landscapes.

“Magical Mystery Tour” will remain on view at the Gallery@Hotel Indigo through Saturday.

Hopefully, 2018 will offer stronger horror efforts, but The Last Key certainly will not be the year’s worst. New director Adam Robitel follows up his wellreceived debut, The Taking of Deborah Logan, with an acceptable sophomore feature.

Whannell does not add much to the mythology; the new antagonist, KeyFace, does not seem to have anything to do with the original’s Darth Maul lookalike. Still, the movie provides a few more facts for Elise’s entry on the Insidious wiki and provides some new blood through which the movies can continue considering Elise dead in the franchise’s current timeline.

DARKEST HOUR (PG-13) 2017 has already delivered a lot of Dunkirk, with Christopher Nolan’s eponymous war film and Their Finest’s rom-com take on the watershed rescue. Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour places a high value on words, but sadly spends more time telling audiences how important Winston Churchill’s response to Dunkirk was when it should be showing it.

By Bonita Applebum advice@flagpole.com Hey, Athens! Happy 2018! I didn’t go out on New Year’s Eve for the first time in over a decade. I stayed home, drank wine, watched terrible documentaries and popped my sleep medication exactly at midnight.

I had to come clean to myself about why I party so hard on the last day of every year. Social pressure, sure, but honestly?

I’ve always been obsessed with the “midnight kiss” tradition. I was interpreting the events of NYE as setting the tone for my entire year. If I don’t rage and party and make out on the last day of the year, then I’m setting myself up for 365 more days of bummer. It was when I said that out loud to a friend that I realized what a bullshit superstition this was, and also that I really hate walking

around drunk and being hungover nowadays.

I started my year better than ever, and so did our local university, with the UGA Bulldogs (Is that how you say it? Is it Georgia Dawgs?

I don’t know.) winning the Rose Bowl just yesterday, as of this writing. I don’t follow football, but I’m very aware that this is a huge deal, and I’m all about positivity in 2018, so here’s hoping whoever our opponent was got their throats ripped out at the national championship.

On to the questions!

Dear Bonita, I am a young professional who recently moved to Athens. I have read articles saying Athens is a great town for singles to meet new people, but as a woman, I have been disappointed. Yes, Athens has a great night scene, but for a single woman who doesn’t know many people, that is intimidating. Not to mention, the last couple of times I went out on the town I was harassed by strangers who grabbed my butt, and another who grabbed my arm, pulling me into a bar patio.

Is it the South’s intolerance of independent women, or a college town not understanding

how to treat a woman? I’m asking for advice on what to do to get some good, clean fun and meet new friends.

Young Professional in Athens Hey YP, I’m gonna blame it on football season and a proximity to college crowds. It sounds to me like you are trying to socialize above the Khaki Line (that’s Lumpkin Street, for the uninitiated), which is the invisible border between UGA undergrad nightlife and… well, everything else. This is very much a Southern college town, and the best thing you could do in your situation is to avoid university-oriented bars and clubs. The university is great, but you describe yourself as a young professional, not a student, so I totally understand why that scene doesn’t appeal to you.

My first bit of advice would be to avoid the college bars after dark. There are lots of great shops and restaurants in that part of downtown, but the nightlife can get sketchy during football season (especially a good season, like this year).

Add the controversy over racist dress codes and menu items, and I’d say you’re not missing out on much after 7 p.m. Try spots in Normaltown, Boulevard or the Eastside for a more mature and courteous crowd.

But what you really need is a townie plug. Find some good people whose social lives thrive independently of the university, and see how that goes. What are you into?

Try social environments that are less boozy or even booze-free, like a donation-based yoga class at Rubber Soul. Go to Monday ramen at Seabear, grab a seat at the bar, and talk to whomever you’re sitting beside.

Go to Little Kings on any of its trivia nights, sit at the bar and play along with the other know-it-alls who aren’t on a team.

Athens is a great city for single women, but I think you might be approaching this wrong. Be more measured in your approach to socializing, and avoid the undergraduate party scene. f

Here is fervently hoping that the loss of Junkman’s will not result in the destruction of our landmark old bus station. Owner Eric Brown is said to be looking for a restaurant to occupy the space. If that’s true, surely anybody attempting such a configuration is familiar with the highly successful conversion of the old Greyhound Bus station in Savannah to the upscale Grey restaurant, with meticulous repurposing of all the bus station areas and facilities (and damned good upscaled food, too).

Whatever he chooses to charge for rent, let’s applaud Brown for so far saving the bus station building, which could have been a goner when Southeastern Stages moved its Athens location into a gas station way out on the Atlanta highway, making a bus trip frightfully more inconvenient and expensive for those needing it the most.

I have always loved the old station and even fantasized at one point that Flagpole might use it as an office. Four or five years ago, I wandered into Aurum Studios downtown for the opening of a show by René Shoemaker, whose paintings on silk are lively and colorful. I was stopped in my tracks by René’s painting of the Athens bus station. It wasn’t in her usual bright palette, but I fell in love with it and bought it on the spot.

Speaking of René, she has a show up at Ciné through the end of January. It is mostly small, framed paintings on silk.

René spent most of the last year living and

So, by now we’ve all heard that another local nexus of weirdness, Junkman’s Daughter’s Brother, is closing for the second time. I talked with owner Mark Gavron on Christmas Eve, and he was philosophical. He has already been run out of one downtown location, his son is graduating from high school this year, and Mark is ready for more flexibility and readiness to travel. The main thing for Athens, of course, is the loss of another of our iconic local businesses, which simply cannot and Rue de Beaumont—La nuit. Felletin, hand-painted silk will not be replicated by any Weird R Us national franchise. The announcement painting in France, and this show marks that Chick-fil-A is opening across from the her return, “La rentrée,” which is a term the Arch is no consolation.

French use to mark the end of summer and Junkman’s is selling off its stock and the return to “real life.” René is one of our fixtures during the next month or so at many local treasures, and I urge you to go by increasingly better discounts, so go get you Ciné and enjoy her exhibit. Stop by Flagpole some Junk while you still can. and enjoy her bus station, too. f
