Is a Clayton Street Cluster-You-Know-What Coming?

By Blake Aued and Rebecca McCarthy news@flagpole.com Athens-Clarke County commissioners are moving forward with a long-awaited plan to remake Clayton Street—without any input from the downtown businesses that will be affected by the new configuration, as well as more than a year of construction.

Originally part of SPLOST 2005, the Clayton Street project was put on hold in 2013 after bids came in at almost double the $6 million budget. T-SPLOST, the 1 percent sales tax for transportation voters approved in November, included another $6 million, and commissioners now apparently are rushing to make up for lost time.

They decided at a work session Dec. 12 that they want to fast-track the streetscape project, which will involve tearing up Clayton Street to do underground utility work and lay down new sidewalks, in order to avoid construction over two football seasons. County staff’s original timeline called for approving a “project concept” in March, with more detailed design work approved in May, and construction starting next summer and running until mid-December 2019.

“Ripping up the heart of downtown through two football seasons is pretty harsh,” said David Lynn, director of planning and outreach for the Athens Downtown Development Authority, at an ADDA meeting earlier that day.

At their evening work session, a majority of commissioners agreed, opting to vote on a design in March to start work in May and hopefully wrap up by August 2019. The project concept is on the agenda for the commission’s Dec. 19 discussion meeting, setting up a vote on Jan. 2.

While some details can be tweaked after Jan. 2, that vote will lock in how wide Clayton Street will be, because engineers need to know the curb-to-curb street width before they can proceed with further design work. The consensus

At some point, ACC should consider making Clayton and Washington two-way streets, Commissioner Jared Bailey said, because “there’s an economic advantage for businesses when the streets are two ways.”

But doing so would be expensive: About $250,000 for new traffic signals at each intersection, Raessler said.

Where delivery trucks should park to unload beer is a perennial issue downtown, but doesn’t appear to be a concern as it relates to the streetscape project. Lynn said bar owners are “ambivalent” about the loss of the center lane, which is used by delivery trucks. And Raessler said there are plenty of other loading zones that delivery trucks can use.

P.S. Yes, it’s the same project that will involve cutting down the trees on Clayton Street, which are nearing the end of their lifespan anyway and are too big to be moved. So, once again, be aware: The trees on Clayton Street are coming down. New trees will be planted. [Blake Aued]

You Spin Milledge Right Round The commission is also moving forward with another, much less controversial T-SPLOST project—a roundabout at Milledge Avenue and Whitehall Road. The roundabout was approved in 2009, but the commission opted in 2013 to merely flatten out a hill at the existing intersection because of a lack of funding, knowing that it would need further improvement down the road, so to speak. Both a traditional option and a roundabout are the same price (around $2 million), and a roundabout will significantly improve traffic flow during rush hour while eliminating the time drivers would spend waiting for the light to turn during off-peak times, Raessler told commissioners. It will also look nicer, with landscaping in the center island, he said. [BA]

the board approved a resolution Dec. 14 affirming that CCSD has a “responsibility to welcome and educate all students” and that “deportation, or the threat of deportation, of students or their parents undermines the sense of safety that all students must have to academically achieve their greatness.”

The resolution directs Means and a committee of BOE members to review district policies and come back to the full board within 90 days with recommendations “to effectuate the Board’s commitment to the education, safety and emotional well-being of all students and their families regardless of immigration status, ethnicity, national origin, race, or religion.”

The Texas legislature in 1975 decided to start charging tuition to students who had not been “legally admitted” to the U.S., but the Supreme Court ruled in Plyler v. Doe that any money saved was far outweighed by the cost to society of not educating those children. [BA]

UGA Still Opposes Episcopal Dorm There’s just one little thing holding up final plans for a new Episcopal House residence hall complex on Lumpkin Street.

University of Georgia officials want to grant the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta a license to use University Court instead of an easement. University Court is the street that snakes from Lumpkin to Cloverhurst, with parking lots on one side and the Oglethorpe House complex on the other.

“That’s the sticking point,” said attorney Jim Warnes, who represented the diocese at last week’s ACC Planning Commission meeting, “the legal definition between an easement and a license.”

When the diocese submitted plans for the project last May, the university vehemently opposed it, with Police Chief Jimmy Williamson speaking against it because of potential traffic problems and student safety. Episcopal officials withdrew the plans, reworked them and sat down with UGA to resolve differences.

The reception last week was remarkably different. Planning commission member Alice Kinman spoke in favor of the redesign, saying changes make it suitable for the site. David Finkel also said he likes the new plans, as did Maxine Easom and Hank Joiner.

Reached via Lumpkin, the parking lot for residents will be on the lowest level of the structure and will be gated. Warnes told the planning commission that because the facility is in a central part of campus—close to a dining hall, the Miller Learning Center and the stadium—he expects students to be walking or taking campus buses, not driving. He said the new design, redone

by Studio BNA Architects, features “pods,” as the individual buildings are called, with two, three or four-bedroom options, with common dining and study areas. Those living in the buildings will be UGA students who want to be in a spiritual environment of like-minded individuals.

Speaking against the plan was Allison McCullick, UGA’s director of community relations. She said student safety is the university’s primary concern, and UGA officials are worried about the 47 parking places accessed by University Court. The university wants to grant the diocese a 50-year-long license to use University Court, which could be canceled if it’s breached. What would constitute a breach? If the diocese violates the terms of the license. But what are those terms?

When questioned by planning commission members, McCullick said the university doesn’t want a lot of cars coming in and out of University Court, on which many students walk and cycle. The diocese needs to assure university officials that this won’t be the case. Warnes said there’s more negotiating to be done.

“We know the problem, and we’re working on the answer,” said Ralph Edwards, who attended the meeting in support of the Episcopal Diocese. “The parking technology we need is out there.” [Rebecca McCarthy] f

Claire is buried in the rock-walled cemetery with her parents, her brothers and their ancestors. Chris and their son Alex now carry on her stewardship of the graveyard and of the land she loved.

Her favorite spot there was Melvin’s Hill, so called because he loved it, roamed it and wrote about it. A group of legislators called the Rural Development Council spent several months looking for ideas to reverse the flow of people and businesses away from Georgia’s rural counties. They finished their work last week with a set of recommendations they hope will do the trick: income tax breaks for people who move to rural counties, subsidies to bring broadband internet services to these areas and a state facility to assist in the recruitment of new businesses.

It’s commendable to extend a helping hand to the state’s more impoverished rural areas, but the same legislators who are trying to do this also allowed something to happen a few years ago that undercuts their efforts. During Gov. Nathan Deal’s first years in office, Deal refused to expand Medicaid coverage as part of the federal Affordable Care Act. The legislature’s Republican leadership—the same lawmakers who now want to revive rural Georgia— supported Deal in this decision.

By not expanding Medicaid coverage, Deal turned down about $9 billion in federal funding that would have flowed to Georgia’s doctors and hospitals over a three-year period. Much of that federal money would have gone to hard-pressed rural hospitals that treat large numbers of Medicaid patients. After Deal spurned the federal dollars for Medicaid expansion, several of these financially struggling rural hospitals gave up the ghost and closed their doors. At least six rural hospitals have gone under since 2013, in fact.

The state has never come up with a way to replace that lost federal money and reopen these shuttered rural hospitals. If there is no hospital in a rural county to provide reasonable access to health care, there isn’t much chance that businesses are going to locate there.

“

Another problem is that executive branch agencies like the state Department of Economic Development are working against them by pulling out all the stops to lure companies like Amazon to open new facilities in Georgia, developments that have the potential to create thousands of new jobs. Major companies like Porsche and Mercedes-Benz have already chosen not to locate in a remote rural county, but in metro Atlanta. Other companies are likely to make that same choice.

Georgia lawmakers want businesses to come to rural Georgia. The state’s professional industry hunters, conversely, are trying to bring in businesses that won’t even think about moving to those areas.

The result is that you will have more new companies in metro Atlanta that create new jobs, and those new jobs in turn will persuade even more people to desert their rural counties and move to the big city.

One of the recommendations made by the Rural Development Council could well be achievable: bringing broadband access to internet services to the state’s rural counties. It’s been estimated that roughly one in six Georgians does not have internet access, which effectively shuts them out of participating in the modern economy and job market. Regardless of whether lawmakers succeed in the revitalization of rural areas, those residents deserve to have the same access to the information age as their city counterparts.

In the end, it is very difficult to move against the tide of history. For decades, the trend in this country has been for people to move from rural areas to the cities, not vice versa. That’s why today fewer than 20 percent of Americans live in rural counties. It’s a compassionate goal to try to reverse that trend—but it may not be a realistic one. f

conducting himself consistently with our understanding about the scope of his investigation,” Rosenstein said.

The far right is enraged because it thinks Mueller and his team are politically biased, and is demanding that Rosenstein fire Mueller. Last month, Republicans said firing Mueller was the only way to prevent a coup. Text messages between two FBI agents, one of whom was on Mueller’s team, have given fuel to that fire. The texts between Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, it turns out, were released to a “select BAYNARD WOODS

Jefferson Beauregard Sessions came to Baltimore on the day that Democrat Doug Jones took the attorney general’s former Senate seat in a special-election victory over accused pedophile and hardcore theocrat Roy Moore. Much of the country felt relief that Alabama did not elect a man who had been banned from an Alabama shopping mall back in the ’80s to the U.S. Senate.

Still, more than 60 percent of white people in Alabama did vote for Moore, again proving that if you are racist enough, in some parts of America almost nothing else matters.

Trump tried to cast Moore’s defeat as a personal vindication; he had endorsed Luther Strange during the primary. But Sessions must have been more uncomfortable than normal—and not only because he was in a majority-black city.

When asked if he had voted, Sessions flashed his elfin grin and said he had, but he would respect the “sanctity” of the secret ballot. Steve Bannon, who brought Sessions into the Trump orbit, had used all his Breitbart-ian propaganda for Moore and gotten stomped. So now he was recalibrating.

“Judge Moore has never been, really, an economics guy,” Bannon told Newsweek following Moore’s defeat, and wished for a candidate like Sessions, where “immigration and trade would’ve been at the top of the agenda.”

In Baltimore, Sessions followed the Bannon script and stirred up fear of immigrants and minorities. He was talking about the Salvadoran gang MS-13 and immigration, going back to his own most deeplyheld convictions of the danger of immigration.

“Over the last two years, this city in particular has experienced violence like we haven’t seen in nearly a quarter of a century,” the attorney general said. “Baltimore has a higher murder rate and a higher violent crime rate than Chicago with less than a quarter of the population, if you can believe it.”

Someone in the Department of Justice must have thought Baltimore would be the perfect venue for this message, but there is virtually no MS-13 presence. And Sessions did not mention that eight members of an elite police task force here have been indicted by the feds for racketeering and a series of other crimes—robbing civilians, planting drugs, stealing drugs and having them sold in Philadelphia by a local cop. A detective, Sean Suiter, was murdered on Nov. 15, and it later came out that he was scheduled to testify against those officers the very next day.

Not exactly a good place for your law-and-order speech.

The “strong and motivated policing” he called for was what allowed the Gun Trace Task Force to be out of control in the first place. To make it worse, Baltimore’s police commissioner asked the FBI to take over the case more than a week earlier and never got an answer. But when Sessions was asked about the FBI taking over the case by a local reporter, Sessions seemed largely unaware of the case and spoke in platitudes about cooperation.

Sessions partially blamed immigrants for Baltimore’s crime, but he also wanted to blame those who protested the death of Freddie Gray in 2015. “Bad things start happening and you can trace the surge in violence in this city to the riots and some of the reactions that occurred afterwards,” he said.

Baltimore was a bad spot for Sessions because it also reminds people that he had to recuse himself from the Russia investigation for lying under oath. That investigation is now handled by Rod Rosenstein, who used to be the U.S. attorney in Baltimore and is now Sessions’ No. 2 at the DOJ. Rosenstein was to testify about the investigation before the House the next day.

“I’m appropriately exercising my oversight responsibilities. So I can assure you that the special counsel is

Strzok said the Republican Party ought to “pull their head out of their ass,” and called Trump an idiot. Strzok was fired for this. But the far right is capitalizing on it. A Bannonaffiliated Super PAC is buying ads in local cable markets calling on Mueller to be fired. Right-wing pundits are calling for a purge in the FBI. This is dangerous, for sure. But it’s crazy to act like our law enforcement offices all around this country aren’t politicized. It’s just that they’re usually right-leaning. At the same moment Sessions was speaking, the first six of 193 people who will ultimately face trial as a result of four broken windows on Inauguration Day were sitting in a courtroom being prosecuted by his DOJ. Testimony showed they had a clear political bias against anarchists and for Trump.

But the same armchair #Resistance that has ignored the trampling of the rights of citizens and journalists in this case is getting ready for a mobilization if Mueller is fired.

The danger is that the Resistance will be willing to embrace the kind of tough-on-crime mass incarceration policies of a Sessions DOJ if it helps save Mueller, whom it sees as the last hope.

As Sessions slithered away, looking simultaneously delighted and nervous, like a school boy at a strip club, his red cheeks glowing beneath his white hair, it was clear, once again, that we are in hell. f Baynard Woods is a reporter for the Real News Network. Klein, he’s just repeating the mistake made by other media heavyweights who’ve written about this.

A very early adopter of the 25th Amendment “solution” to the Trump “problem” was conservative New York Times columnist Ross Douthat. In a column last May, Douthat, despairing of Trump being impeached, proposed, apparently as a “kindler, gentler” version of impeachment—impeachment without any actual impeaching—resorting to the 25th Amendment, which, Douthat assured us, “allows for the removal of the president.”

And the opening sentence of a column captioned “Let’s be clear about what the 25th Amendment does and doesn’t do” by the Washington Post’s Jennifer Rubin reads, “The 25th Amendment sets forth a procedure for removing a president…”

Also in the Washington Post, Paul Waldman, sharing Douthat’s despair, writes, “There is, however, another and perhaps even more likely way that Trump might be removed from office: the 25th “Oh, really, Leon?”—Ezra Klein Amendment.”

The 25th Amendment Won’t Save Us

would still be acting president, according to the amendment, not having succeeded to the presidency in his or her own right.

So this scenario isn’t impeachment “lite” or any other kind of impeachment. If the president is impeached by the House and convicted in the Senate, he’s gone. He vacates the office and has to vacate the premises. If he refuses, as I can easily imagine Trump doing (“Fake impeachment! The Senate is a bunch of losers! So unfair!”), presumably he can be escorted out of the White House by the Capitol Police, the Secret Service, U.S. Marshals or whoever the authorized law enforcement agency is.

But if Congress votes not to restore the presidential powers to the president, nothing in the 25th Amendment suggests that the president is out on the street. On the contrary, for all the amendment provides, even prolonged disability such as befell Woodrow Wilson wouldn’t bar the ailing president from holing up in the White House residence for the remainder of his or her term.

People who know more about this than I do have suggested that medical advances able to prop more and more of us up through advanced old age argue for updating the 25th Amendment to address a Woodrow Wilson-type situation. For example, it could be revised to limit how long a disabled president could cling to the presidency before having to resign.

However sensible that would be, as things stand now, there is no such limit.

So Rubin, promising to tell us what the amendment does and doesn’t do, said in her very first sentence that it does exactly what it doesn’t do. And even getting straight about what it does do, it’s still, contrary to Waldman, a heavier lift than impeachment. To impeach a president, it takes just a simple majority in the House to send articles of impeachment on to the Senate. It’s only in the Senate that a two-thirds vote is required to convict. But under the 25th Amendment, it takes twothirds in each chamber just to keep the president on the disabled list.

If Klein and his high-voltage colleagues spent as much time in the social media funhouse as I do, they’d see why it matters to get stuff like this right. When their shaky 25th Amendment commentary filters down to where the rest of us live, it encourages the fantasy that we’re just a couple more crazy Trump tweets away from being shed of him, when the reality is that the only “solution” to the country’s Trump “problem,” barring actual impeachment, is a long, arduous slog through the political thickets and brambles. f

Real talk:

2017 wasn’t exactly the best year.

Dominated by the snarling orange creamsicle in the White House, it was chaotic at best, even on a local level.

But there were signs of hope, too. Athens responded to the Trump Administration with anger, outrage, humor, creativity and, finally, a middle finger at the ballot box.

These stories are not necessarily the ones that went viral, nor are they necessarily the most important things that happened in the past 12 months. But they are 10 of the most popular, most interesting, funniest or most likely to reverberate through 2018 and beyond.

Waka Flocka Wiped His Ass With a Frat Boy’s Trump Jersey at the Georgia Theatre JAN. 17: The headline says it all, really. Like many people, Waka Flocka Flame apparently wasn’t looking forward to the new race-baiting regime. So when a University of Georgia frat boy showed up at the Atlanta rapper’s Jan. 16 Georgia Theatre concert wearing a Trump basketball jersey, he did what any of us would have done—took it from the kid and used it to wipe his bare ass. The crowd loved it, and so did the jersey-wearer, who later had his picture taken with Waka Flocka backstage.

Thousands March Against Trump in Downtown Athens JAN. 20: What may have been the biggest protest in Athens history greeted the newly inaugurated President Trump. Billed as the “Day of Resistance,” an estimated 2,500–4,500 people marched through downtown, then packed the streets around City Hall to hear from progressive speakers on immigration, sexism, sexual assault and other issues. If only folks had been so fired up to vote last November…

‘Them Boys Get It’: The Liberal Redneck’s Love Letter to the Drive-By Truckers FEB. 15: Less than a month into the Trump Administration, Athens needed a big ol’ dose of Trae Crowder, the comedian better known as the Liberal Redneck—at least, based on the numbers this article drew online. Crowder, who espouses liberal politics with a Tennessee accent in his viral YouTube videos, wrote an essay for Flagpole about Athens legends the Drive-By Truckers—liberal rednecks themselves—prior to opening for them with a stand-up set at the 40 Watt Club.

With Calendar Girls, Town & Gown Bares All MAR. 22: This may have been one of the most eye-catching Flagpole covers of all time: The cast of a play about a group of British women who pose nude for a calendar to raise money for a hospital, posing nude for the cover of an alt-weekly, with nothing but copies of the Colorbearer of Athens, GA to preserve their modesty, who also made a real-life calendar to benefit a Northeast Georgia cancer

organization. Needless to say, the story got a few more clicks than a typical community theater preview.

First Discrimination Complaint Filed Against Downtown Bar MAY 23: With the help of the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement, Statham resident Kendrick Bullock filed the first complaint under a new Athens-Clarke County ordinance requiring bars to post their dress codes outside and allowing people who feel the codes are not applied equally to everyone to file complaints with the county attorney’s office. Bullock—the brother of well-known local artist and civil rights activist Broderick Flanigan—alleged that a doorman at 9d’s denied him entry because of saggy pants, even though they weren’t saggy and no dress code was posted. 9d’s owner Mark Bell responded by filing a lawsuit seeking to have the ordinance thrown out.

The ACC Commission Has Moratorium Mania!

MAY 24: With both Five Points and the Hancock Corridor threatened by development, the commission declared a one-year ban on demolitions and some new construction in parts of those neighborhoods—a decision that came just three months after it put a moratorium on new downtown apartments and bars. At issue in Five Points:

Around Hancock, rumors circulated that the owners of The Varsity would tear it down, along with other other nearby homes and commercial buildings, for a mega-development at Broad and Milledge. Proposals for a Milledge Circle historic district and zoning changes to Hancock and Reese are expected to come before the commission next year.

The 40 Watt Club Was Burglarized AUG. 2: Dozens of microphones, amps and direct boxes were stolen from the 40 Watt during a break-in, and since it’s a beloved local institution, people went out of their minds. R.E.M.’s Mike Mills and Cracker’s David Lowery offered a $10,000 reward, and many an outraged Facebook post was written. The story had a happy ending that turned tragic: Three days later, a Greenville, SC music-store owner caught sound tech Michael Simpson Wilson trying to fence the stolen items. Wilson was arrested and charged with burglary and, soon after making bond, took his own life.

UGA Professors Sue to Overturn Campus Carry SEPT. 27: The campus carry law took effect July 1, much to the consternation of the vast majority of UGA faculty and staff, but at least three professors weren’t going to take it lying down. John Knox, James Porter and William B. Whitman joined three other professors from other Georgia public universities in suing Gov. Nathan Deal and Attorney General Chris Carr. They argued that the Board of Regents, not the legislature or governor, has the authority to set policy regarding guns on university property; and that guns chill classroom debate, endanger students and could lead to more suicides.

Dems Score Stunning Wins in Athens State House Elections NOV. 7: When Deal named state Rep. Regina Quick a Superior Court judge and Rep. Chuck Williams head of the Georgia Forestry Commission in August, it triggered special elections to fill their Republican-leaning Athensarea seats. Two first-time candidates stepped up to run: Deborah Gonzalez in District 117 and Jonathan Wallace in District 119. Both were underdogs; Wallace faced three Republicans, while Gonzalez’s opponent was Houston Gaines, a 22-year-old recent UGA graduate who raised $200,000 and had the backing of the Atlanta business establishment and GOP leadership (not to mention our ostensibly Democratic mayor, Nancy Denson, who was ousted from her post on the ACC Democratic Committee for hosting a fundraiser for Gaines). Both Gonzalez and Wallace prevailed—drawing national attention—but they’ll have to turn right back around and run again next year.

While not as heralded, Athens voters also approved a 1 percent sales tax for transportation (T-SPLOST) that will yield many benefits like better roads, bike lanes, sidewalks, trails and bus service over the next five years. f

Given the depth of the bench this year—and because we’ve been feeling particularly jolly lately—we decided to expand the field. Here are 17 of our favorite Athens recordings of 2017, plus what we said about them at the time of release.

False Youth Etcetera ( Freakout)

The Florida natives survived serious record-label drama to release this stadium-pop standout in November. “On the surface, these are Springsteen-influenced anthems engineered to reach the cheap seats at the back of the festival,” Barton explained, “but taken under a microscope, this is some superior songcraft, channeling complex emotions into equally complex song structures.”

WesdaRuler 4da99 (Independent Release)

Though he’s primarily known as a producer, providing backing tracks for Lingua Franca and other local rappers, Wesley Johnson wowed with his solid if understated mic skills on his spring 2017 EP. And, of course, “the beats on this record are next-level good, with a decidedly 1990s feel and plenty of bebop and cool-jazz samples worked in,” noted Lamb.

Art Contest Two Songs ( Post-Echo)

These Palmetto State transplants deliver a hyperactive blend of math rock and experimental pop on their stunning sophomore album, which “provides an opportunity for the audiophiles to flex their engineering muscles in ways limited by performance, resulting in a record that balances playfulness with polish,” according to contributor Andy Barton.

Lingua Franca

Lingua Franca EP (Independent Release)

Athens’ hottest hip-hop record of the year has been on heavy rotation since February. Back then, Flagpole’s Gordon Lamb wrote, “What [Mariah] Parker seems to understand on a preternatural level is the importance of personality as a distinguishing marker of artistic authenticity. This new record has personality all over it, from the exuberant, thoughtful production… to Parker’s pointed rhymes.” An expanded LP drops in February via HHBTM.

Double Ferrari Double Ferrari (Ernest Jenning)

This highly anticipated heavy-rock album lived up to its billing. As I remarked in October, “On the debut full-length from [Jace] Bartet’s band… the former air-guitar champion spreads the good word with an ecstatic, high-flying brand of instrumental riff-rock designed to convert nonbelievers in the time it takes to travel from one end of the fretboard to the other.” If you dig guitars, you’ll dig Double Ferrari.

Harlot Party

I Want to Be Recalcitrant, I Am Just Exhausted E P (Independent Release)

This low-key gem landed at the very beginning of 2017, yet it remains one of the year’s finest local releases. “[KyKy Renee] Knight navigates her complicated emotions in a way that engages the listener on a profound level,” reviewer Nathan Kerce wrote in January, calling the EP “a fascinating journey through the mind of one of the most promising artists of 2017.”

Limerence Land (Independent Release)

The most inventive local punk album of the year is an impressive artistic statement. As Lamb put it in October, “It’s lyrically complex without being needlessly wordy, musically complex without being wanky and full of machismo, and supremely hooky without falling into cliché territory. It is, in short, great.” The band also dropped a surprise follow-up EP earlier this month.

Elf Power

The longtime local favorites gifted us with another compelling collection of earthy, melodic psych-pop back in the spring. With the new album—which was a bit looser than usual—and the group’s ongoing affiliation with the Orange Twin Conservation Community, “Elf Power continues to embody the [Elephant 6] collective’s experimental spirit,” Kerce observed in May.

The B-52s legend returned in November with a sparkling new sound that owes much to her ace group of local collaborators. “It would be hard to imagine the pure magic of the previously released ‘Sunrise’… without Ryan Monahan’s simple yet soulful guitar line, Lemuel Hayes’ breezy, laidback groove or producer Suny Lyons’ rich orchestral flourishes,” wrote Barton in his review.

David Barbe

Five Eight

The Athens icon and studio wizard wrote, played and recorded every note on his 2017 album, a sonic and spiritual nod to his DIY beginnings. “One might expect a middle-aged scene lifer’s solo album to sound muted, contemplative, worn,” I mused in August. “But even in its reflective moments, Barbe’s new album is unquestionably alive, bursting with the uniquely Athenian energy that has propelled the songwriter’s career from the start.”

The local heroes finally dropped this long-rumored new record in the summer, and it did not disappoint. Frontman Mike Mantione called the sprawling double album “one of the purest distillations of Five Eight to be put on record,” as Kerce wrote in July. Certain songs, including lead single “Florida,” found the band adding alt-country twang to its high-octane rock assault.

LET’S GO KWAZY, LET’S GET NUTS: I didn’t think I was going to have room to include this before the end of the year, but the new three-song EP from Kwazymoto is a gol’ dang hot fire. Titled The Death of Darby Crash and released on the 37th anniversary of the Germs frontman’s death, the band continues its amazing upward trajectory in terms of songwriting. This release is a perfectly distilled blend of math and noise rock with dashes of classic punk. The highlight for me is the relatively short but lyrically epic middle song, “Family Sun House.” Give it a listen at kwazymoto.bandcamp.com, and be a pal at facebook.com/kwazymot0.

THAT BEAT IN TIME: Irish journalist Ken Sweeney traveled to Athens in May to record a radio documentary on R.E.M. Although he covers a lot of well-worn ground for longtime fans, he went a few extra miles to grab original quotes and interviews and didn’t depend on alreadypublished material. (Imagine that, digital vertical publishers!) Anyway, the whole audio doc, “R.E.M.: Out of Athens,” runs just over an hour and covers the band’s first decade (roughly 1980–1992). The Power of Paper ‘AMORPHOUS DISLOCATIONS’ ON DISPLAY AT INDIGO

By Jessica Smith arts@flagpole.com Given paper’s traditional composition of pulp, fibers and other natural materials, it feels appropriate that Atlanta-based artist Lucha Rodriguez uses this medium to create textural, three-dimensional artwork that resembles organic shapes. She carefully hand-cuts her material into sprawling growths that look like ambiguous, looping entrails. Currently on 24-hour view in the outdoor Glass Cube at Hotel Indigo, “Amorphous Dislocations of Ultramarine” is a site-specific installation embodying her expertise in growing these abstract organic forms.

Swirling upwards from the center of the floor, thin sheets of cut paper mushroom into a cloud of hanging shapes like a willow tree. An embedded mirror on the back wall allows viewers to imagine themselves physically present within the scene from where they stand behind the glass. In the daylight, intricate layers of clean, white shapes are accentuated by translucent colored film that casts softly tinted shadows. After nightfall, LED lights kick in to bathe the space in cool tones of violet, indigo and ultramarine.

Gently morphing colors, in combination with the illusion of floating structures, make the Glass Cube resemble an aquarium.

Rodriguez’s interest in organic forms was sparked at an early age while flipping through the pages of her father’s extensive collection of medical illustration books.

Though they are not intended to represent specific organs, each irregular shape is individually cut as a mental reconstruction of these images seen in the past. The structures appear to be in a constant state of movement or evolution as the eye traces their growth across the room. She also incorporates geometric shapes and sharp angles into her work, which creates a tension with the loose, flowing curves of the bodily forms.

The majority of Rodriguez’s artwork gravitates towards a limited color palette of white and hot pink, with the occasional pop of black or fluorescent yellow. She most frequently uses white as the surface color for cutting her intricate pieces, adding pink as an accent. This narrow combination of

colors leads the eye to focus on repetition, balance and negative spaces within the designs.

“I have always been fascinated by the color pink,” says Rodriguez. “It has a strong expressive power in both art and popular culture. The qualities we associate with the color pink range from sensitive, youthful, artificial and sweet to unreal, eccentric, vulnerable and kitschy. I feel there’s a deep connection between color and its different meanings that makes people react differently.”

After receiving a BFA in graphic design from the Art Institute of Atlanta and an MFA in printmaking from the Savannah College of Art and Design, Rodriguez began experimenting with the unique properties of paper. Pushing paper’s two-dimensional nature into more sculptural forms, she began cutting out old etchings and reassembling them into new compositions. Eventually, these cutouts began to outgrow their wall-bound frames, leading her into creating site-specific installations that transform simple rooms into detailed environments.

Movie Dopes OUR CRITICS DISCUSS THIS YEAR’S MOST MEMORABLE FILM EXPERIENCES

A

nother year, another slate of films.

With superhero movies (even a good one from DC), sequels decades in the making (Blade Runner and another new Star Wars) and a ton of great documentaries (many already available on Netflix or Amazon), 2017 had a lot to offer any moviegoer. Though a few highly anticipated films have yet to hit Athens, Flagpole critics Jon Hogan and Drew Wheeler went ahead and hashed out some of the year’s most memorable cinema experiences.

Jon Hogan: It’s really tough to choose a favorite film, but this year boasted some surprisingly strong documentaries, like the David Byrne concert film Contemporary Color and One of Us, Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady’s look at leaving the Hasidic culture.

However, the clear winner of a strong batch, and my favorite film of the year, is Viktor Jakovleski’s Brimstone & Glory, an exploration of the Mexican city of Tultepec and its yearly fireworks festival. While Jakovleski captures crisp, bright, one-of-a-kind imagery in the fireworks displays, he also offers potent frames that tell the stories of the people behind the pyrotechnics.

A shot where a onehanded pyrotechnician uses the blunted end of his left arm to assemble a firework is almost impossible to watch without misting up.

Drew Wheeler: Wow! I really want to see Brimstone & Glory now. Not many documentaries opened wide in Athens this year, but of those that did, Step absolutely sucked me in. Any film that can so accurately capture a modern, inner-city high-school experience (I teach in a similar situation) is fascinating and necessary in a society so dominated by personal worldviews. I was concurrently

horrified and fascinated by City of Ghosts.

I’ve never seen so many executions, despite an extensive history with Faces of Death.

JH: I’m sure (I hope) most of the executions you’ve seen have come via genre films.

What stood out to you?

DW: I think we got our best film of the year from a genre. Jordan Peele absolutely crushed it in his feature writing-directing debut, Get Out. I read a lot of Ira Levin in the months prior, and really think that flick is the heir apparent to The Stepford Wives.

The performances were excellent—Bradley Whitford gave us an excessively memorable cringe-worthy dad—and the writing was strong, pointed and subtle, like Levin at

JH: S. Craig Zahler’s Brawl in Cell Block 99 might be my favorite genre picture of the year. While Vince Vaughn does a passable job ringing pathos out of incarceration, the true strength of the film comes in its fight choreography. Long takes of wide shots offer a detailed view of ass-kicking unseen in modern action films. The visceral impact of these melees stems from skin hitting skin and not quick, slick editing like in most The Florida Project superhero fare. All that, and Udo Kier playing a well-dressed creep!

his best. So many modern horror filmmakers strive to be John Carpenter—see the overuse of his Albertus Bold font—that it was nice to see other excellent inspirations noted. Horror has gotten a bit of a boost the last few years (e.g., It Follows, Don’t Breathe), and Get Out sort of ices the cake with striking humor and absolute terror.

JH: I will always be thankful to Get Out for confirming that, regardless of the medium, Marnie is still the absolute worst.

DW: Ugh! She so is!

So, Peele would be my top candidate for a breakthrough award for his writing and direction, but his strongest competition would be Greta Gerwig, whose Lady Bird was so fresh and funny.

Saoirse Ronan would probably top my list of 2017 performances, closely followed by Brooklynn Prince in The Florida Project. Laurie Metcalf finally found a role worthy of Aunt Jackie. I also loved Holly Hunter and Tiffany Haddish. Willem Dafoe was more human than I’d ever seen him in The Florida Project, though Barry Keoghan certainly earned any attention turned his way for The Killing of a Sacred Deer, a film I want to like more in hindsight than I did due to its odd, unsympathetic characters. Harry Dean Stanton in Lucky was the top actor in my book; it may be time for another posthumous Oscar. James McAvoy deserves some attention for Split,

though the movie itself is more memorable for Shyamalan’s brilliant last-minute reveal—which is different from the twists for which he is famous—than McAvoy’s brilliant performance(s). What performances stood out the most to you?

JH: Like you, I was completely floored by the performances in The Florida Project.

Unless it’s about Apu or Antoine Doinel, I typically dislike films about kids, but I added another film to that list of exceptions this year. Martin McDonagh has a crack ear for dialogue, but it takes the right performers to work well within his rhythms.

Frances McDormand proves up to the challenge in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, adding resonance to each clipped utterance as a bereaved mother. Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project) was both the AFCC’s and my pick for Best Supporting Actor, and I had Best Supporting Actress Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird) only behind Allison Janney (I, Tonya). Three Billboards deservedly won Best Ensemble, though I preferred the teens of It. Christopher Nolan certainly earned his Best Director nod (it’s hard to argue with Hoyte Van Hoytema’s cinematography win). I favored Jordan Peele’s John Carpenter impression, which did win for Best Screenplay. I still recommend Icarus, a Netflix documentary as good as many a fictional feature this year, but Jane and Kedi tied for Best Documentary. Coco is not Pixar’s best picture, but in a down animation year, not much else was better; check out my pick, Loving Vincent, if/ when it opens in Athens. I have yet to see a foreign-language film eligible for this year’s awards, but look forward to winner BPM. I am already looking forward to next year’s awards! f
