Combing Through the Comp Plan PLUS, CINÉ’S SURVIVAL, LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES AND MORE LOCAL NEWS

By Blake Aued and John Huie news@flagpole.com Athens-Clarke County officials are racing to finish the county’s latest comprehensive plan, a state-mandated 10-year document that will guide local government decisions on development, housing, transportation, the environment and other areas.

“This is not a plan that sits on a shelf, as is often thought of,” ACC planner Gavin Hassemer told about 50 attendees at an Oct. 16 public input session at Chase Street Elementary that focused on land use. The last comp plan paved the way for Athens’ two farmers markets, the proliferation of community gardens, Sunday and night bus service, free rides for youth and the county’s public art program, Hassemer said. The previous one, passed in the late ’90s, created the “green belt” around the outskirts of the county and funneled development downtown.

Athens is routinely named one of the best places to retire, but numerous people have pointed out that there is little housing specifically for retirees. “There is nowhere downtown that’s friendly to aging in place that I want to live in”—not even the recently approved Mitchell Street condos for seniors, which lack patios or balconies and aren’t walking distance to a grocery store, Frances Helmsley said at the input session. “If I were able to buy one of those, that’s not where I want to live,” she said.

That’s not an issue restricted to retirees, University of Georgia student Taylor Worley said. “If you live downtown, you have to have a car, because you can’t walk to the grocery store, and you have to have a place to park,” he said.

The proliferation of luxury student housing downtown was another common theme.

Dan Lorentz lamented that the University of Georgia has stopped building dorms.

“I think we should build a wall, keep the students out of downtown,” he joked. “But

seriously, I think it would be good if the university got back into student housing.”

As a solution to Athens’ affordable housing problem, one couple from Seattle proposed “pod housing” similar to apartments but with a common kitchen area. ACC planning commissioner Hank Joiner had another solution: revisiting the county law limiting the number of unrelated tenants in single-family homes to two. “We’re beyond that now, because we have so many student high-rises,” Joiner said. “Students don’t want to live next door to me, they want to live downtown.” Since fewer students live in neighborhoods and create problems for fulltime residents, the law could be relaxed to make rents cheaper for working people.

Those are only a few of the hundreds, if not thousands, of ideas planners have received, both through the comp plan input process and Envision Athens, the master-planning process for the entire community. Now, planners and the comp plan steering committee—made up of the nine-member planning commission, county commissioners Sharyn Dickerson (who cochaired Envision Athens) and Jared Bailey, and Deborah Lonon, director of the ACC Housing and Community Development Development Department—are in the process of sorting through them all. Envision Athens involves the school district, university, nonprofit sector, businesses and hospitals, but the comp plan is specifically focused on local government. At their most recent meeting Nov. 13, steering committee members seemed unclear on what can and should be included—for example, the government can influence health care in certain ways, but is not a health-care provider and can’t do much about things like insurance rates or access

to clinics. The state will expect ACC to stick to its word. “We cannot put things in here that we cannot follow through on,” Hassemer said.

“I’m concerned we’re going to spend a lot of time on things that really don’t belong in the comp plan in the first place,” planning commissioner Lucy Rowland said.

And time is of the essence—the plan is due July 1, which means it has to be presented to the Mayor and Commission by March or April at the latest, and it was delayed as the Envision Athens consultant, Planning NEXT, compiled data and public input. “I don’t think it’s possible [to finish the plan in time] unless we really start to step things up,” Rowland said. Legislators Won’t Move Local Elections Meetings between ACC commissioners and the county’s delegation to Atlanta— which usually occur twice a year—are typically polite tug-of-wars over “local control” of issues. Commissioners want to

be allowed to make their own decisions on matters like scheduling elections or local taxes; state lawmakers talk about “local control” as a great thing, but on specific issues often treat the local officials as children who need adult supervision by the legislature.

So it was at last week’s commission work session, although the usually Republicanheavy legislative delegation was augmented this time by the presence of Deborah Gonzalez and Jonathan Wallace, the two Democratic newcomers freshly elected in local upsets that made national news.

Wallace and Gonzalez mostly just listened as commissioners discussed their wish list for the upcoming legislative session with state Sens. Frank Ginn (R-Danielsville) and Bill Cowsert (R-Athens) and Rep. Spencer Frye (D-Athens).

Local elections should be held in November when turnout is highest, and not in May as the state requires for ACC’s consolidated government, Bailey argued. “It’s a more democratic process,” he said.

THE TAKEOVER SHOWS HOW CHICKEN FARMING IS SHARECROPPING

ONCE REPUBLICANS HATED RUSSIA, BUT NOW THEY LOVE IT

We came to work one morning several years ago at the old Flagpole office on Foundry Street and found a dazed and bloody chicken on the doorstep with a note around its neck saying something to the effect of “Help me.” There wasn’t much we could do to help it, but we did take it over to the vet school, where they said it was too far gone and killed it with more mercy than it would have got at “The Poultry,” if it hadn’t escaped the truck.

We see them rattling past in the little cages on the big trucks bound for the processing plant over near the bypass. Fortunately for us devotees of chicken salad, we don’t see them up close. I saw this one up close, and it was not chicken salad, it was a chicken or a manufactured facsimile of a chicken with just enough life left in it to remind me that from birth to death this thing’s short life was spent in confinement, and its only reason for existing in God’s universe was to turn itself into nuggets and tenders and drumsticks and salad for our enjoyment.

If you live around here, you have frequently noticed out in the surrounding countryside, especially north of here, chicken houses in fields where crops used to grow.

You may have noticed, too, over time, that the chicken houses have grown considerably in size and in sophistication, so that the modern ones look like little factory farms and the older ones are pretty much abandoned.

If you’re near my age bracket, you grew up hearing on television the jingle, “Jesse Jewel Southern fried chicken; Jesse Jewel, sure is great…” On the way to Gainesville on 129 just past I-85, you passed the Jesse Jewel processing plant and had to hold your breath, since your car was not airconditioned, the same way we have to hold our breath around here sometimes, thanks to our own processing plant.

But we don’t mind holding our breath, because we know how much chickens add to our economy as well as our diet. Our chicken plant provides jobs for those who need them the most, and all those chicken houses have saved family farms that otherwise would have gone out of existence.

Well, not so fast: Those chicken houses are not what they appear to be. The University of Georgia Press recently published Monica R. Gisolfi’s The Takeover: Chicken Farming and the Roots of American Agribusiness. We already knew that agribusiness—giant, corporate control of farming—has taken over our food chain, but Ms. Gisolfi succinctly lays out for us just how this came about right here in North Georgia, right before our uncomprehending eyes. A lot has been written, not that we’ve

read it, about the evolution of corporate farming, and Gisolfi, an associate professor of history at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, provides copious citations to that literature in her notes.

Remember the song lyric, “I owe my soul to the company store?” That came out of cotton tenant farming, in which the land-

lord, through his store, advanced goods to the farmer during the growing season and then settled up when the crop came in, usually taking all the farmer made.

Lo and behold, as cotton wore itself out in North Georgia before and after World War II, chicken farming arose to take its place, using the same economic model.

Jesse Jewel and them (now Tyson Foods, above all others) perfected a vertical integration of the business so that the company owns everything—except the means of production. Jewel and Tyson figured out long ago that the growing of chickens is not profitable and not worth the investment in land, buildings and equipment, so they left that to the farmers. But Tyson and them control every other aspect of the chickenfarming process, making the money and letting the farmers take the risk, usually owing their souls to the bank to pay for the upgrades in facilities and equipment demanded by their suppliers, who can drop them if they don’t comply and leave them with no income to meet their payments.

The Takeover shows how agribusiness profited from government and university programs meant to help the farmers. And it shows how seamlessly farmers around here segued from cotton tenant farming to chicken tenant farming on the land we pass by in air-conditioned comfort, perhaps munching nuggets as we go. f

When I was growing up in the 1950s and 1960s, there was no country more feared by Americans than the Soviet Union. We were all terrified back then at the thought that the Reds would drop atomic bombs on the United States and blast us all to oblivion.

That became a very real threat, in fact, with the Cuban missile crisis of 1962.

For Republicans especially, the No. 1 job of America’s political and military leaders was to be on constant guard against the Russian menace. Their stern warning was, “Better dead than red.” A favorite line of attack on Democrats was to accuse them of being “soft on communism.”

This anti-communist vigilance continued into the administration of Ronald Reagan, when the president described the Soviet Union as the “evil empire” and called for the deployment of a Strategic Defense Initiative that would enable us to shoot down incoming nuclear missiles.

Nothing better illustrated the feelings towards the Soviet Union than that time in August 1984 when, asked to do a voice check prior to his weekly radio address, Reagan said, “My fellow Americans, I’m pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.”

Reagan’s joke brought him no end of ridicule, but the humor was indicative of how deep the anti-Soviet feelings ran among American conservatives.

Given that background in American culture, it is astonishing to see how things have turned around today. There is no longer a Soviet Union, of course, but there is still Russia, and it seems that the country is no longer our deadliest enemy. These days, we love Russia. President Donald Trump is particularly enamored of Russia and its autocratic leader, Vladimir Putin.

Although U.S. intelligence agencies all agree that Russian operatives interfered in the election, Trump insists that can’t be the case. “He said he didn’t meddle,” Trump said after his most recent meeting with Putin on a trip to Asia. “I asked him again.

You can only ask so many times. Every time he sees me, he says, ‘I didn’t do that.’ And I believe, I really believe, that when he tells me that, he means it.”

Shortly after that meeting with Putin, it was reported that the Trump Administration had awarded a no-bid contract to a private Russian company to provide security guards at the American Embassy in Moscow and at consulates in St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Vladivostok.

The private company was co-founded by Viktor Budanov, who was formerly a top spymaster with the KGB. In the space of just a few years, we have seen a major political party do a complete turnabout on what was one of the defining political issues of our time. Russians apparently are no longer the bad guys.

That kind of dramatic realignment has happened before. In the 1860s, it was Southern Democrats who upheld the practice of slavery and fought a Civil War to try to keep the system in place. The Republican Party under Abraham Lincoln won that Civil War and passed the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guaranteeing black citizens the right to vote. In the United States, we don’t know how to honor the martyrs of our political movements as well— we don’t have as much experience.

But in Greece, the group’s leader and some of its parliamentary members are also facing charges for belonging to a criminal organization involved with the murder. “They are being tried as a crime syndicate for: homicides, attempted homicides, serious intentional physical injuries, explosions, robberies, blackmail, possession of firearms and explosives, drug law offenses,” Golden Dawn Watch, an anti-fascist group monitoring the trial, wrote in a recent post.

When asked why his son was killed, Fyssas testified, “Because this organization silences the voices that oppose it. His songs were anti-fascist, and this annoyed them.”

Fyssas’ mother said that “he had ideas and principles. He wrote what he believed

in his songs. Before he died, he had taken to helping the homeless. He helped, he was clean, a free spirit with principles; those were his only weapons.”

She was asked whether his music bothered anyone. “Yes,” she testified. “Their anti-fascist and anti-racist content did. He wanted to educate younger people.”

When the trial began more than two years ago, it was dubbed “the trial of the century.” Now, people joke it may last that long. But Golden Dawn Watch argues that

the system is working. Golden Dawn has “ceased violent criminal activity [and] removed the terrorist battalion from the street. The parliamentary mantle can no longer cover the odious face of the neo-Nazi organization. The trial frightens the leadership of the [Golden Dawn] and exacerbates the contradictions within it.”

This is the same kind of slow work happening in the U.S. as anti-fascists and reporters expose the racist dealings of fascist groups. But it is has been a hard fight.

In the U.S., as in Greece, many law-enforcement officers sympathize with the far right.

While more than 200 people are on trial for protesting Trump’s inauguration, there are no similar conspiracy charges against Vanguard America, the group to which Heyer’s killer belonged. Instead of prosecuting the white nationalist groups to which terrorists like Fields belong, Trump and the American far right are inspiring fascists around the world.

“Trump’s policies have given us a new wind of support,” Elias Panagiotaros, a Golden Dawn MP, told The Independent. “It’s validating and reinforcing our nationalistic and patriotic policies… We should reclaim our country and our interests and put them first, just like Trump.”

The 60,000 fascists in Warsaw marched under a banner that read “We Want God,” a phrase from a Polish patriotic song that Trump recently quoted. Other signs called for a “white Europe” and an “Islamic holocaust.”

Fascists see this as a global struggle, as they did before World War II. In honoring Heyer, European antifascists are helping us see the same thing.

But while American liberals hate Trump, they have yet to become actively anti-fascist and often demonize the real resistance as extremist. They call themselves the “Resistance” but fail to acknowledge the examples of Fyssas, Heyer and the activists facing decades in jail for organizing against Trump. In order to become a real force, this so-called “Resistance” needs to recognize its heroes and take its villains seriously. f

The Anti-Union South FOR TODAY’S WORKERS, ‘SELF INTEREST’ LIES IN THE EYES OF THE BEHOLDER

Cobb news@flagpole.com Some 35 years ago, the Ol’ Bloviator published a book called The Selling of the South, which chronicled the efforts of Southern political and economic leaders to attract new industrial plants, employing a variety of subsidies, tax exemptions and other gimmicks, but focusing in by far the greatest part on the promise of cheap, non-union labor. As the following piece, which appeared a while back at zocalopublicsquare.org, shows all too well, this practice has changed but little.

like United Airlines. In 1991, the airline met with vociferous opposition from the Greensboro, NC business community when it revealed plans for a maintenance facility that would bring 6,000 well-paid unionized workers to a wellknown haven for non-union industries.

With Rust Belt employers already opting for the balmier business climate of the Sun Belt, foreign industrial investment in the South got a huge boost in 1971, when the Nixon Administration moved to boost exports by devaluing the dollar while simultaneously imposing a 10 percent surcharge on imported manufactures. At that point, exulted a British banker, industrial investments in the United States were “like getting Harrods at half price.”

Excited liberals presumed initially that these foreign companies, coming from environments where labor enjoyed greater bargaining rights and prerogatives, would not insist on union-free work forces. Yet many of them were drawn to

he recent crushing rejection of a United Auto Workers bid to organize a 6,500-worker Nissan assembly plant near Canton, MS seemed to present the proverbial déjà vu all over again for organized labor’s ancient and oft-thwarted crusade to gain a serious foothold among Southern workers.

This time, however, we are not talking about textile and apparel plants in the 1920s or ’30s, but about a thoroughly globalized Japanese auto manufacturer, led until a few months ago by a French-educated, Brazilian-born CEO. What might seem to be no more than a classically Southern triumph of continuity over change is better understood as an example of continuity within change—one with implications ranging well beyond regional boundaries.

Cheap labor has been the mainstay of efforts to lure industrial employers into the South since the 1880s. By the 1920s, union agents venturing into the region could expect withering inhospitality, not excluding brutal beatings by local sheriffs or company thugs. With these shows of physical force came a powerful and cohesive propaganda barrage, courtesy of racist and sectionalist politicians who linked labor unions to the abolitionists of the 1850s and the “race mixing” NAACP of the 1950s.

seemed like pocket change compared to the $295 million show of affection that sealed its original agreement in 2000 to come to Madison County, MS. Mississippi’s subsidy guarantees to Nissan now exceed $1.2 billion, with the total for all foreign automakers with plants in the South topping $4.2 billion.

To this day, not a single production workforce at any of these heavily subsidized foreign auto plants has opted to join the United Auto Workers. Nissan’s non-union Tennessee and Mississippi operations are the only such plants among its 45 production facilities worldwide. Like its international peers, as well as the great majority of the domestic manufacturers preceding it to the South, the company has frequently reminded workers, state officials and leaders of the affected communities of their stake in keeping it that way. In the struggle in Canton alone, Nissan has racked up eight NLRB charges of unfair labor practices in the last 36 months.

The anti-union onslaught in Canton over the protracted build-up to this month’s vote had a ferocity reminiscent of many such campaigns in years past. This time, however, the stakes were much higher, not simply in terms of money and jobs locally, but in the future of what has long been Mississippi and the South’s foundational development strategy of bringing jobs in by keeping unions out. Though the terminology and technology employed by both camps were different than they would have been 75 years ago, elements of race, religion, regional bias and, of course, fear, were still part of the story this time around.

With blacks accounting for a large majority of plant employees, race came into play more subtly this time, as anti-UAW spokesmen pointed to the union’s donations and close ties with certain black churches and civil rights advocates, while union supporters cited preferential treatment for white plant employees. There was ministerial involvement on both sides, with pro-union clergy concentrating on linking workers’ rights to civil rights and pointing to Martin Luther King Jr.’s advocacy of both.

Meanwhile, instead of demonizing the UAW, opposing clerics came closer to deifying Nissan for, as one put it, making “such a change in the life of the people… The lights are on, the water is running…

Ironically, representatives of Yokohama-based Nissan cast the UAW as an “outsider” trying to disrupt the plant “family.”

Although the old-fashioned appeals to sectional bias were not apparent in official company statements, they lurked just below the surface among rank-and-file union opponents, such as the one who took to an anti-union Facebook page to condemn organizers as “21st-century carpetbaggers” and urge workers to “help these Yankee aholes pack… and tell [them] to get back to Michigan and stay there.”

Meanwhile, anti-union politicians were hardly less given to fear-mongering than they had been several generations earlier. Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant warned, “If you want to take away your job, if you want to end manufacturing as we now know it in Mississippi, just start expanding unions.”

Bryant’s message echoed one in a video shown to workers from Steve Marsh, the plant’s top executive, who pointed out that UAW workers at Ford and GM had “experienced significant instability in recent years,” including “many layoffs and plant closings.” A representative of Kelly Services, which recruits temporary workers for Nissan, had warned more explicitly on Facebook that the Canton plant might close if the union came in.

In the end, Nissan’s not-so-veiled threats of lost jobs were almost certainly critical to the roughly two-thirds vote against the UAW. An estimated 40 percent of the workforce are temporaries, who are hired at much lower starting wages, currently advertised by Kelly Services at $13.46 per hour. If they eventually join the regular workforce, these former temps come in at their current pay under a twotier wage-benefit scale that caps their hourly wage at $24,

roughly $2 per hour less than the average for a worker hired earlier on regular terms. Even so, a Nissan employee making $24 per hour would still be making as much as $385 more each week than the average for workers surrounding counties, including Hinds, which is home to the state capital.

With temporary workers ineligible to vote, the secondtier status of some 1,500 former temporary workers seemed more likely to support the union than their senior coworkers, and a reasonably unified pro-UAW stance on their part might have swung things the other way. When it came time to vote, though, in a state that is down more than 30,000 manufacturing jobs over the last decade, even an inequitable work situation was clearly preferable to flipping burgers or cleaning motel rooms. One former temp reasoned that even her second-tier paycheck meant that she could finally “put food on my table without worrying about having to pay my light bill.�

The key to this and countless other union defeats in the South and elsewhere, is not the ignorance of those who vote “No,� or their blindness to the potential benefits of union representation. Rather, it is the sobering, selfpreservational realism of workers steeped in generations of unrelenting, sometimes unthinkable poverty. Although making some headway at long last, in an age of almost instantaneous industrial mobility they remain acutely sensitive to the ephemerality of even the incremental gains they are finally enjoying as individuals. It should not surprise us that they are given to far greater skepticism of the more expansive vision of progress they are asked to accept on faith by others whose lived experiences often differ dramatically from their own.

Self-Preservation or Intimidation?

Still juiced on the classic liberal notion that worker solidarity trumps all, a certain commenter on the O.B.’s humble offering seems oblivious to radical changes in historical and economic context since the 1950s. As it so often does, this particular blind spot breeds impatience rather than empathy: This very interesting and historically enlightening article is seriously flawed by the last paragraph which is absolute nonsense. It is not “self-preservational realism� or any other kind of rational thinking that caused the Nissan workers to vote against their own self-interest. I don’t know why they voted against themselves but i suspect that it is about intellectually unsophisticated workers succumbing to intimidation. I grew up in Detroit where first generation immigrant factory workers with little education like both of my grandfathers had the courage and insight to fight to unionize the auto industry.

While the O.B. readily doffs his beanie to this gent’s resolute and courageous grandpas, he begs to point out that mid-20th Century Detroit autoworkers had little reason to think that the factory doors were going to be slammed in their faces when Americans were standing in line to get them one of those Buicks with the new dynaflow transmissions. Nor were the factories themselves going to be relocated at any great distance from the vital steel and rubber suppliers concentrated in the industrial Midwest.

Suffice it to say, the world looks quite different today, not simply for workers in Mississippi but those in many of the former strongholds of organized labor throughout the old Manufacturing Belt. At 8.1 percent, Alabama has the highest unionization rate among the 11 states of the old Confederacy, while the rate in 7 of those states is under 5 percent. Meanwhile, across the entire country, the share of workers belonging to unions has fallen from 20.1 percent in 1983 to 10.7 percent in 2016, reflecting a loss of 3 million members over that span. Industrial outmigration, complaints about excessive wage and benefits demands, and a general anti-labor political backlash have factored heavily in this decline, which has produced serious political consequences, particularly for the Democrats, for whom “labor� has long simply meant “organized labor.� It is one thing to say that reversing the longstanding overall decline in union membership would help to restore a much-needed balance and tangibility to American politics. It is quite another to draw on a sorely outmoded perception of the current realities of labor-management positioning to summarily declare that any worker in any setting who opts out of union representation is incapable of defining or assessing his/her “own self-interest.� f

Last year, we had the bright idea to visit Maine for a summer vacation. It was lovely, and the weather was great. And then we drove home.

Yes, we drove.

Fifteen hours later and still not in Georgia, my 9-year-old declared she wanted to play “I Spy” for the umpteenth time.

I swear, there are only so many things you can spy off the rural North Carolina interstate.

I might even take this one step further and make up my own scavenger hunt checklist specifically for I-85 through North Carolina: pig farms, massage parlors, construction pylons and flags. If you have time before you leave, you can also hit up a dollar store for puzzle books; while my daughter tends to get carsick on smaller roads, she’s usually OK on the interstate, and she enjoys the occasional word find.

Chubb and Michel were higher-profile returns, but I’d argue linebackers Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy were more important. They led by example and set the tone for this defense’s disciplined and aggressive style, helping make it one of the best in college football.

Dominick Sanders is one of the best ballhawks to ever wear a G on his helmet.

Aaron Davis went from walk-on to starter and snagged an excellent interception against the ’Cats. Isaiah Wynn has shuffled around the line for four years before becoming one of the best left tackles at Georgia in the last decade. Big John Atkins has thanklessly held down the middle of the defensive line for a few seasons.

The best part of living Athens isn’t the scenic locale, the plethora of bars, the vibrant and diverse music scene or the world-class dining. It isn’t even the pride that comes with calling a community as wonderful as the Classic City home. The best part of Athens is the people you meet, get to know and learn to love who instill that pride in you.

On Saturday, in Georgia’s 42-13 victory over Kentucky in the final game of the season at Sanford Stadium, we got a chance to say goodbye to a group of those people, the Georgia football senior class. You may have never met many or any of them, but if you pay attention to Georgia football, you know them well, and you know how much they mean to Athens. Their performance Saturday was a fitting curtain call between the hedges.

First among them is Nick Chubb, who ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns in his final home game as a Dawg. I still vividly remember his first game in Athens, against Clemson in 2014, when he rushed for 70

This year, as we prepare for another multi-day car ride, I’ve vowed to be a little more prepared than replays of “I Spy” and “The License Plate Game” (also not fun).

And because we will be traveling with kids who are in two completely different developmental stages—one is 10 and one is 19 months—I’m compiling a list of games that will keep big sister entertained enough to be nice to little brother… hopefully. With that in mind, here are a few ideas for that long car ride you’re planning this holiday season.

LEARN LETTERS: Whether your kids are just learning the alphabet or are superstar readers, there are a few games that incorporate the letters on signs and license plates. For younger kids, you can challenge them to look at the signs, billboards and license plates around the car to go through the alphabet. If you’re in rural areas (and that letter K is pretty scarce), you can bend the rules to include the car’s interior, too.

For older kids, you can tweak this game to find words that start with different letters, starting with A. Then you can move to more challenging stuff, like using the letters on license plates to construct sentences or weird acronyms (BCM=“Bench cows more”).

BRING A FOLDER: For our trip to Maine, I fully intended to bring some printed car games. Obviously, that never happened. But I have learned my lesson. Pinterest is full of links to printable games; some cynicaldaughter-approved ones include variations

GAMES THAT WORK IN THE CAR: Hands down, Uno is the best game when you’re on vacation. Most ages can play it, and most everyone knows the rules. In our car it’s a little more awkward—one adult vs. one child—but I’ll probably grab a deck of regular cards for some old-fashioned games of War. Battleship and Connect 4 are also good travel companions, especially if you have multiple kids sitting near each other.

LISTEN UP: In our car, the driver gets to control the radio. Our daughter’s headphones keep her complaints about the lack of Taylor Swift to a minimum. But without Wi-Fi—and because I refuse to download tons of movies—her secondhand iPhone is rendered useless on the road. What it can be used for, though, is kid-friendly podcasts. I’ve tried to broach this idea with my daughter for a couple years now, but this is the first year we have the technology to follow through with it. A few titles I’ll be downloading are “Book Club for Kids” (mostly middle school novels, but the most recent podcast is about Wonder), “Wow in the World” (produced by NPR, I’m hoping it can be a substitute for the endless slime how-to videos she watches on YouTube) and “The Unexplained Disappearance of Mars Patel” (since we’ve been watching “Stranger Things,” this Peabody Award-winning podcast seems like a good next step).

I could write a whole other column on snacks, but I’ll spare you. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed that next year we’ll be able to finally spend Thanksgiving in Athens. f

yards on four carries. In the midst of the hype around Todd Gurley being the next Herschel Walker, Chubb staked his name to that claim. Even the way he moved looked like Walker—the way he relished contact, kept his legs moving and drove defenders back. The only words I could think while watching that performance were, “My God, a freshman.”

Chubb proved to be the best tailback in Athens since Walker. His 4,469 career rushing yards (and counting) are the secondmost in Georgia history and fourth-most in SEC history, behind Walker in first in both cases. By the time the season ends, he’ll be second all-time in the SEC. We’re going to remember what Chubb did as Bulldog for a mighty long time.

Then there’s Sony Michel, one of the most underrated players in UGA history.

Chubb overshadowed Michel for much of their careers, but Michel has been nothing short of brilliant as a Dawg. Against Kentucky, he ran for 87 yards and three

Jeb Blazevich went from pass-catcher extraordinaire as a freshman to a blocking tight end his final three years and never complained once. Javon Wims has made the most spectacular catches I’ve seen from a Dawg since A.J. Green. Cameron Nizialek transferred Columbia and became one of the best punters in the SEC. What these guys mean to Athens isn’t limited to the gridiron. Look at the work they’ve done with local organizations such as Extra Special People and Camp Sunshine.

Watch them interact with those kids. Watch the smiles they create. Then tell me they aren’t vital members of the Athens community as well as football stars.

The last four seasons have been rough at Georgia, from heartbreaking losses to coaching changes and everything between.

But these guys turned it around. They had one of the best seasons in 30 years, brought the community together, and created a path to success for Georgia football can follow for years to come. f

Athens and its neighboring towns are home to a tremendous number of artists, many of whom create artwork full-time and even more who run their passion project as a side hustle. Something to be grateful for this Thanksgiving is the relief they’ll bring us during the upcoming holiday season, when we can give our loved ones interesting gifts that are locally purchased and handcrafted—just, you know, not by our hands.

Every year, Flagpole prints a massive roundup of over two dozen artist markets and studio sales that occur leading up to the holidays. Local Legends THE NORMALTOWN FLYERS’ HOLIDAY TRADITION CONTINUES

he kickoff to Athens’ holiday season comes with the Normaltown Flyers’ Thanksgiving Eve show at The Foundry Wednesday, Nov. 22, continuing a tradition that began in 1979, the year the Flyers were formed. The manager of Allen’s Hamburgers at the time, Danny Self—later to gain fame as Mr. Microphone—knew a good thing when he saw it, and recruited the Flyers to play in his worldfamous restaurant every Wednesday night.

The Flyers marked the end of an era with a last-ever Allen’s show on New Year’s Eve 2003.

The Flyers were an immediate hit. Crowds spilled out onto the sidewalk, a mix of students and locals, Greeks and townies, white collar, blue collar and no collar, all gathering each Wednesday for the Flyers’ good-time mix of originals and covers guaranteed to make feet move and elbows bend.

That first Thanksgiving Eve came, and a phenomenon that nobody had anticipated occurred. The Wednesday regulars were joined by people who had moved away from Athens but had returned for the holiday. From then on, the annual Flyers show became a reunion and celebration of all things Athens: good music, cold beer, an instant tradition.

The Flyers, like the Classic City, have undergone a lot of changes over the years, with one constant: The leader has always been Brian Burke. “Brian’s always been a good pilot,” guitarist Davis Causey says. “He knows every song ever written, and he’s not afraid to try different things.”

Causey has played with Burke since they formed Mad Dog Melton and the Laughing Disaster in 1971, with a lineup that included Terry Melton, Randall Bramblett, Arch Pearson, Cleon Nally, Ed Dye and Moi Harris. “I’ll always be grateful to Terry for taking me under his wing and introducing me to all the great musicians in Athens,” Burke says.

In 1969, there was one downtown music club, The Last Resort. It was owned by Melton and offered draft PBR, peanuts and a small stage, which mostly featured folk musicians. Jimmy Uhler worked for Melton, and upon returning to his Reed Hall dorm room one night, “Fat Jimmy” heard the strains of an acoustic guitar coming from a nearby room. He knocked on the door, and Burke answered.

Uhler took Burke down to the Resort, and after a couple of months, he and others coaxed Burke onto the stage, where he played a set of Rolling Stones songs. Melton liked what he heard, and a couple of years later, when the Laughing Disaster was formed, he brought Burke on board

Quinter and Tim White. (All of these guys are expected at The Foundry Thanksgiving Eve.) Over the years, other frequent Flyers have earned their wings, including Bramblett, Carl Vipperman and John Keane, who will also contribute to this year’s show.

“Now that Mad Dog Melton is gone, I think of Brian as the elder statesman of the Normaltown river of music,” Keane says. “Brian was one of the intrepid few willing to give me a shot at recording a full LP in my fledgling eighttrack home studio in the early ’80s,” he adds. “Those recordings resulted in the Barnstormin’ album, which… was one of my favorites. I always consider it an honor to get up on stage and [play] with Brian.”

Get two Flyers fans together over a beer, and you have memories. Add a third, and you have a party. Remember the Stolen Bones show at the Georgia Theatre? The Jay Smith benefit at the Rockfish? The Normaltown reunion shows at the 40 Watt Club? The Speakeasy? The Uptown Lounge? Tyrone’s? The 1,000 shows at Allen’s, including the one that closed it down on Dec. 31, 2003?

The end of Allen’s could have been the end of Normaltown, but it wasn’t. Just as Burke’s open-heart surgery five years ago could have been the end of the Normaltown Flyers. It wasn’t. The group no longer plays weekly, but when it does, it’s special. This year’s Thanksgiving Eve show could be the most special of all. f

RIP: The sad news came in earlier this month that Ash Rickli, an Athens musician known for playing in the experimental rock band Strictly Rickli, among other projects, died several days after suffering a cardiac emergency.

Rickli, who was 30, leaves behind a partner, Desiree Sharpe, whom Flagpole profiled in October as part of an article on local tarot practitioners. A Gofundme page has been set up to assist Sharpe—who is pregnant with twins—and Rickli’s family, with over $32,000 raised as of press time.

Sharpe tells Flagpole, “I want everyone to know that [Ash] was an amazing visual artist, musician and creative force. That he was so excited to be having twins. That he was wild and confident and humble and brilliant. That he was the love of my life.”

Speaking on behalf of Bizarro-Wuxtry, where Rickli worked, Wuxtry staffer Nate Mitchell calls Rickli “a talented musician and visual artist,” adding that “we are as stunned and saddened by his untimely passing as anyone else who knew him. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, his partner Desi and the Ash Rickli and Desiree Sharpe family-to-be who he never had the chance to meet. Ash Rickli was an amazing human being who made the world a better place, and we sincerely hope his memory will be preserved as long as possible.”

Of the two, the latter is better. Key’s voice is much more natural on this set of slower, more introspective songs than on the former, where the songs seem sincere but somewhat forced into shape. This isn’t a casual criticism, either. His voice is quite pleasing and well suited for this style of music, so it should follow that, because this style relies so much on authenticity, he would likely shine on the songs that are most authentic. On a positive note, the jump between the two is evidence of his growth as an artist and songwriter, and it’ll be nice to see him continue on this path. THE FLORIDA PROJECT (R) If you know anything about The Florida Project, it involves 7-year-old Brooklynn Prince, who gives the year’s breakout performance. As Moonee, a 6-year-old wreaking summer havoc on the Orlando motel in which she lives with her mother, Halley (Bria Vinaite), Prince precociously commands the screen both comically and dramatically.

Tangerine writer-director Sean Baker tackles the gritty reality of modern American poverty in the shadow of the Magic Kingdom with empathy. Thankfully, a sweet scholarship kid, Jack Will (Noah Jupe, just seen in Suburbicon), wants to be Auggie’s pal. While Auggie is the center of the film, and of the Pullman family, Wonder generously and sympathetically shares the stories of other characters, like Auggie’s caring, neglected sister, Via (Izabela Vidovic).

Auggie’s tale sounds seriously syrupy, and while it is emotionally sticky, the film avoids the pitfalls that trap so many other, similarly well-intentioned tearjerkers, making Wonder less single-mindedly effective at eliciting waterworks. Its star power helps; Julia Roberts practically glows as Auggie’s long-suffering mother, and Owen Wilson is goofily keen as his dear old dad.

Stephen Chbosky, who wrote and directed The Perks of Being a Wallflower, best be careful before he’s known as the YA guy; still, he is exceptionally good at wrangling these more-complex-than-they-seem tales of teenage (or younger) angst.

THE STAR (PG) Ever want to see what the Nativity looked like from the POV of the animals? Probably not, but that has not stopped Sony Pictures Animation, which released The Emoji Movie, from teaming with the faith-based film producer of Heaven Is for Real. (The Jim Henson Company is involved as well.) Audiences are expectedly familiar with the central story—Mary, an angel, Joseph, Bethlehem, a manger—but all the animal bits are new, if not a bit fresh.

Steven Yeun (Glenn from AMC’s “The Walking Dead”) voices a mill donkey named Bo, who winds up being instrumental to Mary giving birth in the famed manger.

Fortunately, the titular heavenly body lures three wise men, whose donkeys are fortunately voiced by Tracy Morgan, Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey; this trio easily provides the movie’s few remarkable moments.

Even with the star-riddled voice cast that also includes Keegan-Michael Key, Christopher Plummer, Kris Kristofferson and Ving Rhames—the rest of the cast may be familiar, but they are not notable—The Star is no more than a downloadable dud waiting to be cued up to entertain bored kids at grandma’s house. f

The Pennsylvania-based Japanese musician has released over 80 recordings documenting his explorations into non-linear performance. In addition to teaching classes and workshops, he leads the Nakatani Gong Orchestra, where community ensembles are guided through compositions on bowed gongs.

Caledonia Lounge · 9 p.m. · $10–12 Known as one of the most ferocious hardcore acts of the early-’80s SoCal scene, San Diego band Battalion of Saints released a classic, 1984’s Second Coming, before fading into relative obscurity. Frontman George Anthony has tended the fire over the years, touring and releasing music with the help of a rotating backing cast, and in 2015 metal label Southern Lord commissioned a self-titled EP from the group’s most recent iteration, which features members of Angry Samoans and Hirex. The band is joined in Athens by New Hampshire group The Cryptics and smut-obsessed Colorado punks Nobodys, as well as local thrashers Apparition. [Gabe Vodicka]

Athens-based promotion team Public Access, founded and run by Eureka California’s Marie Uhler, has grown from hosting shows to booking tours, and hopefully there will be more news on this latest development soon. Pagan and Sick of Pretending ADVICE FOR ATHENS’ LOOSE AND LOVELORN

By Bonita Applebum advice@flagpole.com Hey Bonita, I’m a longtime Athens-area resident, and look to remain here for (most likely) the rest of my life. My family is all here, and in general my career is steady and reasonably fulfilling. One problem that I’ve had for a long time and is exacerbated by my social anxiety is that, while I was raised and known as a Christian, I am actually pagan and have been since I was about 16 years old. My family is aware of this for the most part, but all of my friends have no idea (I think), and I purposefully keep my religious/ spiritual leanings out of all conversations. At most, my friends suspect I’m agnostic, which is apparently more acceptable to most of them than the idea of paganism.

My problem is that I am assuming they will all abandon me if they find out that I’m actually pagan. I have tested the waters a bit, and I obviously don’t go to church on Sundays, and this has been met with somewhat reasonable respect and only the occasional nudge, like nicely giving me Christian picture books for my children or inviting me to Sunday services. These are rather

would further disrespect myself and others by actively pretending.

I guess I just need some advice about how to navigate this, and how less introverted/ anxious people handle situations like this. I know it’s not that uncommon, but I’m one of those introverts who have a hard time even writing anonymously on the internet. I know I’m not alone in this internal conflict, as many deal with making their differences known with potentially greater risks in our society, but I still don’t know how to deal and would appreciate any advice/guidance you can provide.

I’ve tried telling myself that these people aren’t really my friends if they ditch me for my personal beliefs—I have never ditched them for theirs, after all—but I know that’s not exactly true.

It bothers me a lot that I don’t feel comfortable talking about my beliefs in even the simplest ways, though, so I don’t know how sustainable this is, even though I’m in my mid-30s now.

Also, I worry that my personal beliefs will affect my career prospects, as well as my family. Being pagan is a major turn-off around here, even if employers legally can’t discriminate (at least for now). I worry that this will negatively affect my children in school, and I don’t want that more than anything else. I guess I am just very lonely, anxious and feeling the pressure to at least appear to conform.

Sometimes I wonder if pagans “convert” to Christianity just for the sake of community, but I cannot do that. It’s bad enough that I hide a part of myself, but it’s worse to think that I

weren’t the type of people I’d be friends with today.

I know lots of pagan, agnostic and atheist families in this area, and their lives seem to be full of love and friends, though these are people who are plugged into the “scene” here and have a community to support them. I recommend you come out quietly—not with a social media post, but just start answering the question honestly when asked, wearing your religious adornments, etc.—and let people know that your mind is made up about it.

Athens is pretty tolerant, even if your friends aren’t, and you’ll develop a tribe for you and your kids who will love and appreciate your truths. Reach out to Athens Area Pagans and make some friends, and I’d also recommend checking out School of the Greenwood, a local re-wilding school run by pretty cool people with a deep spiritual love of the earth, for amazing activities, classes and social events for your whole family. f
