In film, as in real estate, it’s location, location, location.

That was the message delivered recently by Craig Dominey, a location specialist with the state Department of Economic Development’s film office in Atlanta. He was part of a panel brought to UGA by Letterbox Legal, Deborah Gonzalez’s law firm, and presented by the Sports and Entertainment Law Society. Other panel members were Lisa Ferrell, a producer who works with Georgia Public Broadcasting, and Jeff Montgomery, Athens-Clarke County’s public information officer.

When he started with the film office in 2000, Dominey was happy to see five productions a year. In 2016, there were more than 300, and the film industry in Georgia has become a $9.5 billion business, thanks to a 30 percent state tax credit. “When someone is shooting a $200 million film, getting 30 percent back in tax savings is significant,” Dominey said.

Thousands of people, one way or another, are involved in the film industry, with support businesses offering everything from HVAC work to dog grooming, car parking and catering.

On any given week, there are 60 or 70 productions going on around the state—indie films, Netflix originals like “Stranger Things” and “Ozark,” HBO hits, network TV shows and movies from major studios, like Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War and two upcoming Avengers sequels, all filmed at Pinewood Studios south of Atlanta. Dominey said he’s found Georgia locations that have depicted a desert, Rio de Janeiro and the Las Vegas strip.

Did you spot Emma Thompson and Robert Redford in Athens-Ben Epps Airport last summer, shooting a scene for A Walk in the Woods? Probably not, said Jeff Montgomery, who works with companies wanting to shoot movies in Athens. And that’s just fine—things go much smoother without oodles of fans milling about.

The television show “Sleepy Hollow” has also been shooting in Athens. Athens was the setting for 2013’s The Spectacular Now, directed by local native James Ponsoldt, and scenes in Trouble With the Curve, starring Clint Eastwood as a baseball scout, were shot at the Globe in 2012. Long ago, Athens was the setting for a television version of “Breaking Away.” Part of the 2000 comedy Road Trip was filmed on the UGA campus, too.

What’s challenging for film companies wanting to come to Athens, Montgomery said, is that shooting is difficult in the fall, when weekends see hotels, restaurants and roads crowded with UGA football fans. The Athens community gets scouted often, he said, but other factors besides location determine where a film is shot.

It’s difficult for any community outside of metro Atlanta or Savannah to consistently attract film productions, Dominey said. There are huge studio facilities across metro Atlanta and in Savannah, and crew members live nearby.

Moving to a distant location may mean having to house and feed entire teams of people, making a place that’s out of studio range economically unfeasible.

Ferrell said producers share vendor lists, adding that the film community “is small, almost incestuous.” If someone has a good experience with a particular vendor, then his or her friends are likely to use the same company.

Montgomery said his office is preparing a guide to films in Athens, which will have one-stop opportunities for people. He also said the county is becoming known, location-wise, for more than simply the university. [Rebecca McCarthy]

Bipartisanship Is Still Possible ROY BARNES IS A DEMOCRAT, BUT HE’LL REPRESENT REPUBLICANS

Back in 2001 and 2002, there was no Democrat more hated by Georgia Republicans than Roy Barnes, who was then the state’s governor.

Barnes was an activist governor who signed legislation de-emphasizing the Confederate battle emblem on the state flag. He also pushed through a bill gerrymandering legislative districts that greatly disadvantaged Republicans. They worked to bring about his defeat in the 2002 election, one of the state’s most shocking political upsets ever.

Barnes may have ticked some people off as governor, but he’s widely considered to be one of Georgia’s most talented courtroom lawyers. In the years since Barnes lost the 2002 governor’s race, the same Republicans who cussed him out then have been quick to hire him when they found themselves needing legal firepower to win a court case.

You can start with Sonny Perdue, who upset Barnes in that governor’s race. Perdue didn’t just have political differences with Barnes, he had a seething hatred of the incumbent governor that came through loud and clear every time Perdue addressed his Confederate-flag-waving supporters in that campaign. And yet, it was Barnes that Perdue hired in 2014 when he needed an attorney to file a lawsuit to recover more than $1.5 million allegedly owed to a grain merchandising firm that Perdue owned.

Republican House member Glenn Richardson was another fierce critic of Barnes. But in 2012, when Richardson was no longer a legislator, he brought in Barnes as co-counsel on a lawsuit that alleged Georgia Power had improperly collected sales taxes and fees on a nuclear construction surcharge. Richardson called Barnes “one of the greatest minds I’ve ever known.”

House Speaker David Ralston, a Republican, hired Barnes to represent him in 2015 when Ralston was dealing with a complaint filed with the State Bar that alleged he had misused client funds. Hiring Barnes turned out to be a good decision.

Ralston eventually received a public reprimand from the state Supreme Court but was not suspended or disbarred.

Last week Secretary of State Brian Kemp retained Barnes’ law firm in a lawsuit challenging the state’s election systems. This one is a real eyebrow-raiser because Kemp is a Republican candidate for governor who constantly attacks “liberal Democrats” and “leftist radicals.” Barnes is still a Democrat who is supporting Stacey Evans, a Democratic candidate for governor.

“I definitely don’t see eye to eye with Gov. Barnes on a lot of issues, but I think anyone would tell you he’s a damn good lawyer,” said Kemp. Barnes is such a “damn good lawyer” that he’s among the top echelon of attorneys who typically charge their clients $700 an hour or more for their legal services.

Before Barnes was elected governor in 1998, he served a few terms in the state House of Representatives. One day, thenSpeaker Tom Murphy gave a tearful speech in support of a bill he wanted the House to pass. Barnes sauntered back to the House press gallery and told reporters, “I don’t cry in court for less than $20,000.”

It has been reported that Barnes will be paid $250 an hour in tax funds for his defense of Kemp in the election lawsuit, so he is giving the state a bit of a discount.

Regardless of how much he may be paid for his legal representation, Barnes has showed us one important thing: In this politically polarized era, he’s proved that bipartisanship is still possible. f

White Supremacists Are Terrorists, Too WHY TRUMP WON’T CALL OUT THE ‘FINE PEOPLE’ IN VANGUARD AMERICA

By Baynard Woods democracyincrisiscolumn@gmail.com After the recent automotive attack in New York City, Donald Trump called for the death penalty for the perpetrator. “Would love to send the NYC terrorist to Guantanamo but statistically that process takes much longer than going through the Federal system…” he tweeted. “There is also something appropriate about keeping him in the home of the horrible crime he committed. Should move fast.

DEATH PENALTY!” It’s hard not to compare this response to his “both sides” response to the automotive attack in Charlottesville.

Trump has built his political career on demonizing Islam, but neither he nor his staff have condemned white-nationalist terrorist organizations, whose ideology they continue to openly espouse.

This column was mostly written before the mass shooting at a church in Texas. We still don’t know much about the motivations behind the attack. But the perpetrator seems to have been white—and the president has not yet called him a terrorist or suggested Guantanamo.

When Trump was asked whether or not James Alex Fields, who police say drove his car into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing Heather Heyer and seriously injuring 12 others, was a terrorist, he dissembled. “And there is a question. Is it murder? Is it terrorism? Then you get into legal semantics. The driver of the car is a murderer, and what he did was a horrible, horrible, inexcusable thing.”

By calling Fields a murderer, rather than a terrorist, Trump is able to maintain the myth that white supremacist terrorists are bad actors in a field of otherwise “fine people.”

Trump regularly mentions “our heritage” when he talks about the Confederate monuments that the Nazis descended on Charlottesville to defend. And his chief of staff, John Kelly, once laughably called “the adult in the room,” said that Robert E. Lee was an “honorable man who gave up his country to fight for his state,” and that “the lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War.” We find it easy to condemn all Muslims as terrorists.

And, since the “anarchist bombings” of the 19th Century, we’ve also associated the left with terrorism. At press time, a “We the People” petition to “formally recognize Antifa as a terrorist organization” had 361,242 signatures. The entire right-wing mediasphere has been flipping out over an imagined “Nov. 4” conspiracy where Antifa was supposed to go door to door killing white people and Christians.

And yet, despite mounting evidence of conspiracy and murderous intent, virtually no one calls to declare Vanguard America, or related groups, terrorist organizations.

On Aug. 12, Fields was photographed wearing the uniform and carrying the shield of Vanguard America. The first thing I saw when I got to Charlottesville was Vanguard America members chanting “You can’t run, you can’t hide,

you get helicopter rides!” at leftist protesters, whom they then attacked with sticks. The chant was a reference to Augusto Pinochet’s right-wing death squads. The press has been woefully gullible at allowing these organizations to call such threats jokes—even when they are accompanied by actual violence.

Thanks to a series of chats on a gaming app uncovered by the media collective Unicorn Riot, we know that rally planners also “joked” about running people over with their cars. Then Fields followed through by committing murder, not randomly, but against political opponents.

William Fears, who spent much of the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville trying to stab people with a flagpole, has identified himself as a member of Vanguard America.

He and his brother Colton and another man named Tyler Tenbrink were in Gainesville, FL following the flop of a Nazi rally led by Richard Spencer.

They allegedly pulled their Jeep up to a group of antifascist protesters and began yelling “Heil Hitler.” Someone in the group hit their Jeep with a baton. The three men then jumped out, and the Fears brothers reportedly yelled “I’m going to fucking kill you,” and “Shoot them!” as Tenbrink got out of the car with a gun and fired it at the people.

“Us coming in and saying we’re taking over your town, we’re starting to push back, we’re starting to want to intimidate back,” Fears told the Gainesville Sun earlier that day. “We want to show our teeth a little bit because, you know, we’re not to be taken lightly. We don’t want violence; we don’t want harm. But at the end of the day, we’re not opposed to defending ourselves.”

Then he justified the Charlottesville terrorist attack carried out by Fields as self-defense. “They threw the first blow,” he said. “I look at it as self-defense, whether he just was radicalized and said, you know, I’m just going to mow these people down, or whether he was in fear for his life, but they threw the first blow, so I’m going to take his side.”

Fears, who says he was previously radicalized in prison, was arrested along with his brother and Tenbrink and charged with attempted murder. So, here we have a situation where a member of Vanguard America justifies a murder committed by another member of the same group hours before allegedly attempting to commit another murder—both actions seemingly based on political ideology.

What else do we need to treat Vanguard America the like we do window-breaking leftists wearing black?

Nearly 200 people are facing conspiracy charges based on the clothes they wore at Donald Trump’s inauguration. But because the white supremacists dress like Donald Trump playing golf—the event page for the “White Lives Matter” rally in Tennessee last weekend, noted that Vanguard America and other groups “will be wearing white polo shirts and khakis”—many Americans can still imagine that some of them are “fine people.”

If suspects wear all black and look like punks, then they are all responsible for any crime committed by someone who looks like them. If suspects have brown skin, then Trump, Kelly, Vanguard America and the rest of the altright see them as terrorists, even in the absence of an actual crime. The city government’s finance department went through the Flagpole Music Directory and sent business-license notices to all the bands listed there. Doc Eldridge announced his candidacy for mayor—as a Democrat!

Fausset interviewed an activist from New Orleans (Fausset’s hometown) about that city’s decision to rename schools named for slave owners, beginning with George Washington Elementary. The writer Terry Kay moved here to make Athens his home.

Flagpole’s picks for 1997’s 10 top movies were The Full Monty, Waiting for Guffman, L.A. Confidential, Hype, Ulee’s Gold, The Ice Storm, Brassed Off, Children of the Revolution, Grosse Point Blank and As Good as It Gets.

1987

In the beginning: “Vol. 1, No. 1 of Flagpole, a music rag, Colorbearer of Athens Alternative Music.”

In that first issue, founder and editorfor-life (ha!) Jared Bailey explained that “Flagpole Magazine is a music magazine which will evolve to the needs of an everchanging music scene. We are open to contributions of all kinds…”

The first issue didn’t have many contributors, just mostly pictures, cartoons and ads, including one showing the 40 Watt’s November calendar, with Love Tractor playing on the 12th and 13th and the Bar-B-Q Killers on the 20th. The 40 Watt was closed for Thanksgiving but reminded readers that R.E.M. was playing at the Fox. Here in its entirety is the only editorial piece in the first issue, written by local musician and club manager Bryan Cook: “WHATEVER “OK, so I can write anything I want, so here goes. Anybody who lives in Athens and is not registered to vote should register now! The only way to change the rules that the Prince Avenue Baptist Church pushes on the city is to elect some council members who are not intimidated by the so-called “Christian” wishes. How many times is the church going to bus elderly shut-ins to the polls whenever an alcohol-related issue comes up? If 18–21-year-olds voted, their opinions would carry more weight with the city fathers. Let’s all work together to change the fascist blue laws of Clarke County.

“On another topic, what does conformity offer people? Why must people dress uniformly along socioeconomic lines? Granted, there are exceptions (rich kids slumming it, rednecks in button-downs), but they are far outnumbered by the little Nazis who wear what they are told by the director of their social clubs. I think that is stupid.

“There are other things that I think are stupid, and maybe I will write about them later. I hope to write about things I don’t think are stupid.

Write and tell me how stupid I am or anything. Whatever…”

Bryan set Flagpole pretty much on the editorial path it has followed during the ensuing 30 years, and, by the way, he also named Flagpole.

bash at the 40 Watt that headlined Sun Ra and The Year 2000 Approach Arkestra. That same night, Widespread Panic was playing at the Georgia Theatre, so maybe our birthday party was sparsely attended.

In the real world, elections were approaching, and Flagpole Editor Steve Crawford was urging everyone to attend the rally at the Tate Center to help Michael Stipe and vice-president wannabe Al Gore elect Bill Clinton and save the country from a second term of the Bush-Quayle administration that “seeks to divide us with fear and prejudice, take away our freedoms in the name of ‘justice,’ and further distance the poor from the wealthy as they mortgage the future for short-sighted greed.” The more things change, the more they remain the same, huh?

The Daily Groceries Co-op was opening next door to The Grit, and the number of unrelated persons who could live together in single-family neighborhoods was reduced from four to two, while Flagpole publisher Dennis Greenia relentlessly slammed the Polshek design for the Classic Center, on which local government had already spent over $1 million. He warned that it would never work in Athens, and it didn’t. Dennis was also reminding readers that Sunday alcohol sales in restaurants would be on the November ballot.

The first 10 years! Big changes at Flagpole. Managing Editor/ Bookkeeper/Office Manager/Proofreader/ Web Manager Robin Littlefield left to return home to Dahlonega and thence eventually to Oregon to get a law degree.

(She’s now practicing in Nashville.) Richard Fausset joined Flagpole as our all-knowing editor and yanked us forward in the breadth and depth of our coverage, going on circuitously to his present panopticon position as Southern bureau chief for The New York Times. Margaret Moore, who had directed distribution, moved in-house as classifieds and office manager. After a while, she became our longtime managing editor. And a guy named Russ Hallauer, who had been working the front desk (after assembling it) became an ad rep and later went on to fame and fortune as head of Ghostmeat Records with a day job managing the local advertising operations of Comcast Spotlight.

Bob Dylan played the Classic Center, and the B-52s were in Stegeman Coliseum. (Our reviewer referred to them as “the aging B-52s.”) Looking back from the vantage of 1992, we quoted Vic Chesnutt reviewing R.E.M. at the Omni in 1989: “They make a roar like a two-story stereo, and people shake. You are terrified and ecstatic, twitching your head and squinting to see the boys

In our 15th-anniversary issue, we looked back over the preceding five years at some topics that are still relevant. In 1998, a New Jersey-based urban planner summed up the results of a citizen participation process held here to determine how citizens want Athens-Clarke County to grow in the 21st Century. The top item: 79 percent of respondents wanted a city pattern that offered retail and community resources within walking distance of homes. So much for consultants.

Also in 1998, popular Flagpole Music Editor Ballard Lesemann announced his campaign for mayor in that year’s April Fool’s issue. It was supposed to be a joke, but Ballard came to like the idea and would have run, had Fausset not promised to fire Ballard and resign.

Five Points was threatened with an Eckerd’s drug store, which Flagpole opposed, saying, “That sprawling neighborhood radiating out from the intersection is a fragile part of the ecosystem that makes up Athens.” Now, we know more about that fragility, since the current trend among developers is just to tear the neighborhood down, house by house.

Again, looking back to 1998, Flagpole noted that mayoral candidate Eldridge came out for a biking/walking grid of connectivity. “A pilot project establishing a bike lane on Prince Avenue can be accomplished very easily and inexpensively and is something I have proposed that we do,” Doc promised.

Nineteen years and counting on that one.

In 2000, Brad Aaron wrote about the demolition of the trestle system that 17 years later is finally being replaced by the Firefly Trail: “This much is known: In a closed-door meeting on July 5, the AthensClarke County Commission decided not to pursue the purchase of historic downtown rail trestles, clearing the way for their demolition. How it was allowed to

happen—with no public input—is open to interpretation.”

In that anniversary issue, Allen’s had UGA vs. Ole Miss on the big screen; Big City Bread advertised a Thanksgiving menu; Copper Creek advertised “Athens’ only micro-brewed beers,” but Terrapin was already advertising for employees. The Herbie Hancock Quartet was coming to the Classic Center, Drivin’ N Cryin’ was headed for the 40 Watt, and at Boneshakers, DJ Isaac McCalla was “spinning groovy soundscapes for ‘Sweat’ night.” And all along through the years, William Orten Carlton was teaching Athens about good beer in the pages of Flagpole.

2007

Our 20th-anniversary issue coincided with a long-running drought, and by November, the precipitation deficit for the year was approximately 16.6 inches. Even more ominously, Athens was on the short list as a site for the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility—a giant Homeland Security installation to study deadly pathogens that might be used by terrorists. Skeptics called it the “BioTerror Lab,” and all the hell they raised, as reported and amplified in Flagpole, made the government rudely aware that the facility was not welcome here among a large part of the population. It eventually was awarded to a Kansas community that greeted it with open arms. All of those Kansans are now deceased. (Just kidding.)

The National opened for business and brought Athens a cool new upscale dining experience that persists. Flagpole picked the best Athens bands of the previous 20 years, and the winners, in no particular order and with few surprises, were: The Olivia Tremor Control, Five Eight, Pylon, R.E.M., Phosphorescent, Neutral Milk Hotel, Music Hates You, Porn Orchard, Dark Meat, The Woggles, Drive-By Truckers, Jucifer, Je Suis France, Ishues, of Montreal, Vic Chesnutt, Vigilantes of Love, Wild Gumbo, Hope for Agoldensummer, The Martians, Ceiling Fan, LaBrea Stompers, Chickasaw Mudd Puppies and Stuntdouble.

At this point in Flagpole’s development, we were still near enough to the early days that staffers and former staffers had vivid memories of the struggles involved in birthing a new enterprise. Some of those who were in on the beginning wrote about those first years—the scarce resources, the long hours, the inadequate equipment, the cramped office space. At the same time, their memories also encompassed the camaraderie and creativity of working together

and making it up as they went along and the satisfaction of getting another issue published and distributed. There were also the perks, like free tickets to shows and the opportunity to meet and interview musicians, writers, artists and politicians— realizing the access that accrues even to those who work for a homemade, made-up magazine.

2012

As Flagpole turned 25, local government interest in fostering a mixed-use river district down the hill from the Classic Center came to a screeching halt when Atlanta’s Selig Enterprises bought an option on the Armstrong and Dobbs property. The government had already chickened out on the “Blue Heron” project, an ambitious idea for a high-tech incubator area with housing, restaurants and other amenities, including (gasp) an amphitheater. Selig couldn’t get it together in the face of citizen opposition fueled by the developer’s flirtation with Walmart, so the Armstrong and Dobbs property eventually morphed into The Mark. Meanwhile, the Classic Center and its hotel have proceeded to wall off downtown from the river, thus dooming forever the possibility of “LoDo,” or “lower downtown,” as a Flagpole editor tried to name it.

Cobbham was up in arms in opposition to a Sigma Chi fraternity house proposed for a vacant lot on north Milledge Avenue.

So persuasive were our old Cobbham allies that the Sigma Chi alumni gave up on that parcel and instead bought the building on Foundry Street that housed Flagpole, necessitating this paper’s move to our present palatial digs on Prince Avenue.

In our 25th anniversary issue, original publishers Jared Bailey and Greenia described how Flagpole came into being, while Fausset, former city editors Ben Emanuel and Dave Marr, former distribution manager Lisa May and former music editors Hillary Meister, Jason Slatton and Michelle Gilzenrat Davis elucidated some of the developments in the growth of Flagpole.

The gist of their reflections is that Flagpole grew in popularity and relevance by writing with passion and involvement about our town, taking sides and fighting for what we saw as best for Athens—politically, economically educationally and musically. But their discussions made clear that they never took themselves too seriously. f

ood Lord! Just reading through all these reminiscences on the same day I had lunch with former City Editor Dave Marr hammers home the inescapable fact that Flagpole, “Colorbearer of Athens Alternative Music,” has always been driven by the creative and colorful personalities who have worked here. What’s more, these flamboyant folks are in no way limited to the writers and editors, but have always included the ad reps, the production people, the office managers, the distribution engineers and even the odd publisher or two. That’s always been one of the great strengths of this magazine masquerading as a newspaper (or vice-versa): It attracts people who are involved in the Athens scene, and their experiences enhance Flagpole. [Pete McCommons, publisher, editor]

Talk of the Town What were the hot issues in Athens when you were at Flagpole?

I remember the Observer was up for grabs and the Athens Banner-Herald was looking to buy it. That sent our publisher, Dennis Greenia, into a whirlwind of activism, as it would’ve created a monopoly by one newspaper. If I remember correctly, a trash can got the better of his foot one night. It was the start of my own political awakening, seeing how one person could truly make a difference when they raised their voice. Other issues involved the usual rivalry between the clubs, the attempt to keep corporate businesses out of the downtown area, growth and development of the downtown area and so many other things.

[Hillary Meister, former music editor] The UGA English professor who was a big League of the South fan. [Richard Fausset, former managing editor] Gwen O’Looney, SPLOST, game-day open container silliness, keeping downtown “downtown,” if that makes sense…

I must be missing something. [Jason Slatton, former music editor] It was exciting to see the Prince Avenue bikeway finally come to fruition. Really democratized the street. But seriously… The comprehensive land use plan. Haunts me to this day. Athens as well, I’m sure. [Brad Aaron, former executive editor] The internet was just beginning to pulverize the existing culture around media and music distribution. The aftermath of the 2000 elections and the 9/11 attacks was hard to miss, even in the festive, creative bubble of Athens. The Athens hip-hop scene was getting more prominent. Shows were starting to happen downtown, and there was a lot of cognitive dissonance in the existing scene about how to accommodate it—certain people were wringing their hands about drugs and violence at rap shows, knowing those things were acceptable as long as fans of football or Drivin’ N Cryin’ were responsible for them. Oh, and there was a mediocre local punk band who set a copy of Flagpole on fire as part of their act, because they didn’t think “liquor-swilling gutter punks” was a compliment. [Emerson Dameron, former review section editor] Who could forget the tale of NBAF, the proposed National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility? It all seems like a far-away dream about some parallel Athens now, but at the time a friend even referred to it as the Nirvana of all Athens new stories, and he was right about that. [Ben Emanuel, former city editor] The oldest column of mine I can find is from 2008, a few years after I started writing for Flagpole, and covers El

My tenure was not that long ago, so many of the issues were the same as now: corporate takeover of downtown, badly planned student housing, T-SPLOST budgets, the lack of in-town grocery stores, too few bike lanes, too many bars, yada, yada. [Christina Cotter, former managing editor]

Music and Arts Business Task Force was formed. The task force worked for a year and came up with a list of proposed actions. The list was then presented to the City of Athens government with hopes that they would implement some of the items. That list included a suggestion I had made about creating an annual festival to celebrate the Athens music and arts scene locally while promoting it to the outside world. The local government studied the list with some interest, but unfortunately, they did not implement any of the ideas… After my initial disappointment passed, I starting putting together a plan for putting on that festival myself. I started AthFest as a direct result of the article I had written years before. [Jared Bailey, founder, former publisher]

Perhaps the hottest story—er, no pun intended—was the fire that gutted the Georgia Theatre… It was the first story I covered in real time, posting photos and updates on our website instead of waiting for the next print issue to hit the stands. I know it’s something we take for granted now, but when I started in 2008, everything about the Flagpole machine was calibrated to produce one paper a week.

Adapting our workflow to accommodate the immediacy of the web was a huge challenge, and Flagpole’s social media debut and online growth was, I think, the hallmark of my tenure. [Michelle Gilzenrat Davis, former music editor]

I wrote a satirical how-to piece about getting kicked out of bars and clubs. For research, I talked to bouncers at the Manhattan, the 40 Watt and a few other places about the most egregious offenders they’d 86ed. On the day it was published, I was informed that I was no longer welcome at one of my favorite bars for my behavior the previous week, which included screaming, passing out on the floor and requiring the bouncers to call an ambulance. That was one of my earliest indications that I might have a serious problem with alcohol. I got sober for good almost 14 years later.

I still think that piece is hilarious. [ED]

I was never more excited about a show in Athens than when I learned the Arctic Monkeys were coming to town. As a super-fan, I jumped at the chance to interview the band.

After carefully curating a list of questions for frontman and songwriter Alex Turner, the publicist let me know I’d actually be talking to guitarist Jamie Cook. With that news, I crossed “Will you marry me?” off my list of questions and did a little more digging. The first thing that popped up about Cook was that he is on record saying he “fucking hates the [print] news.” Perfect. I was nervous, but the interview went alright… The real fun came on the night of the show. I was so vocal about my love for the band in the weeks leading up to the gig that just about everyone in town knew this was My Night. Before I even knew what was happening, the amazing 40 Watt Club staff ushered me backstage after the show. I was beyond giddy. I managed to awkwardly strike up a convo with Alex, who was quite literally intertwined with then-girlfriend Alexa Chung. I

There’s no question food in Athens has gotten a lot better since I started writing about it, just as a function of the culture at large changing. Younger people are more willing to pay for decent food now, and everyone seems to care a lot more about food than they did. [Hillary Brown, food columnist]

Our Shining Moments What one story do you most remember writing?

In 1989, I wrote an article titled “Why Doesn’t Athens Support the Music and Arts Scene?” which was reprinted in both the Athens Observer and the Athens Banner-Herald.

The points I made in the article created enough interest among local business people that a Chamber of Commerce

suggested we venture to Go Bar for drinks and dancing, and, bless their hearts, they agreed. Soon I was leading the band and their crew through downtown Athens, like the pied piper of Britpop, and the night ended with me and my then-boyfriend (now husband) dancing side by side with Alex and Alexa to Pulp and the Stone Roses (thank you, DJ Dan Geller). It was magical. [MGD]

I did a long story about the complicated saga that either closed down or threatened to close down the animal rescue shelter out in Dewy Rose. I can’t even remember now what that place was called. Once I got into the story, there was too much countryside interpersonal stuff going on than I felt like dealing with. It was sad for the dogs that had been

plenty of money and no sense of civic responsibility, it was easy! So, yeah, that was memorable. [Dave Marr, former city editor]

It was the community conversation about the Atlanta firm Selig’s plan’s to develop the Armstrong & Dobbs property, where The Mark has now been built by the local firm Landmark. That experience taught me how powerful money is in local politics, and how little of it is necessary to completely overwhelm even the most committed efforts of grassroots activists. Selig absolutely controlled the local discussion of what they were and were not allowed to do, other than what was reported and explained in Flagpole at the time.

Selig ended up pulling out of the deal (after I Steve Crawford helping out as stage security at the Jesus Lizard show at the 40 Watt Club in 1992. left Flagpole), not because they were defeated by local advocates for responsible long-term central developrescued, and countless more that needed rescuing, but it ment, but because the big-box clients they thought they was a pain to report on. [Blake Aued, current city editor] I wrote about a restaurant called Saving Grace out in Comer. It was totally fine, but it wasn’t worth driving out to Comer for. My husband and I got a traffic ticket on the way there for having burned-out tail lights—which we didn’t realize—and then I got hate mail for months. [HB] Talking with Patterson Hood has always made for a good story, mostly because dude is so verbose. I have appreciated his honesty and insight; covering the Truckers in their most politically outspoken era has been revealing and rewarding. Chatting candidly with the late, great Ross Shapiro about The Glands’ too-brief comeback was an unexpected treat. Writing about Wuxtry’s 40th anniversary and Kindercore Vinyl’s opening reassured me—not that I needed it, but y’know—that Athens’ unique and thriving music culture persists. [GV] I very vividly remember interviewing Kevn Kinney when his second solo album Down Out Law was released, and it was an amazing experience. I think he’s one of the best songwriters we have out there, without a doubt.

He’s sort of our Neil Young, which now sounds pretty hackneyed, but his interview was so honest, so open, and he clearly has little regard for the “rock star” thing. Bless that guy, for sure. [JS] Vic Chesnutt’s memorial article. That was really a difficult one. We were all on Christmas break and needed to reach out to the community for thoughts and remembrances of him. I interviewed Peter Buck while sharing a Mexican meal with him at Compadres that was a lot of fun to write. You can basically ask Peter one question about music that will open up a world of music knowledge from that man’s head that could fill pages. I think I asked him what he was listening to at the time. [HM]

Talented Pals What’s your favorite Flagpole story that you didn’t write?

We had so many great writers back then who have gone on to do amazing things. Some of those writers included Richard Fausset, who now writes for The New York Times; Steve Crawford, who was the publisher of a newspaper; Katherine Yeske (Taylor) worked for Michelle Roche and later Spin magazine, and is now at New York University; Henry Owings still does Chunklet, amongst other things; Diane Nuter (now Coll) is working on her PhD in counseling and was a music therapist for a while; Lisa May teaches American history and social studies; Marc Pilvinsky is working on a rock doc of Five Eight; Lance Bangs has gone on to create loads of film/video projects; David Ferguson wrote for Raw Story; Jerry Sumrell’s infamous textual fight with Vomit Thrower—all of these people wrote something for Flagpole at the time I was there that I loved. And then, of course, there were stories by Pete McCommons and Dennis Greenia, Crawford as the Movie Dope, anything Ort wrote, the guy that wrote the Postmodern column… I will say, there is life after Flagpole, and some amazing career opportunities as well! [HM] Some of my best friends at the time were the other record reviewers at Flagpole. We cared passionately about music and thought the music business was ripe for mockery.

Ballard Lesemann, Travis Nichols, Matt Thompson, James Blount, Paul Killebrew, Geoff Carr and a few other people were always trying to one-up each other with odd jokes and experiments. Travis wrote one review that consisted of one 400-word run-on sentence. It was obvious that he would become a published poet—or at least that he was the most serious David Foster Wallace fan of the group. [ED] Travis Nichols’ interview with Vic Chesnutt. [RF]

This predates my time at the paper by several years, but I always remember Flagpole being goofy and oddball.

[GL] Matt Pulver’s April 2012 piece on ALEC and the privatization of public schools in Georgia, which was at least a little ahead of the national curve on that issue. [DM] Jeff Tobias, an incredibly gifted and prolific writer and musician, contributed many of my favorite Flagpole articles, but there is one sort of silly story that has stuck with me.

When Kindercore and Owl Scooters came together to present the “Hootenanny,” Jeff decided to mix things up by writing a haiku for every band on the bill. Somehow, he made it work. The verses were smart, funny and accurate, and for a minute I thought maybe our whole Calendar should be haiku-ed. Anyway, like a musical earworm, the last line of

his Maserati haiku still manages to pop into my head randomly, eight years later: “dude: the drummer. dude.” When Maserati hit the stage at the Hootenanny, I stood in slackjawed awe along with everyone else watching the late, great Jerry Fuchs behind the kit. I smiled and texted Jeff, “DUDE. THE DRUMMER. DUDE.” I’ll never forget the reply: “DUDE. WHO THE FUCK IS THIS? IT’S 1 A.M.” And I thought, “that isn’t a haiku at all.” Turns out Jeff had a new phone and I had his old number. Dude. [MGD] More than the writing, I was humbled by the graphics.

Larry Tenner is a goddamn artist. Ditto Cindy Jerrell, Larry’s design partner when I was there and one of the most decent human beings I’ve ever met. I was also lucky to work with gifted freelance photographers and illustrators who helped with the front of the book. Athens is a wellspring of talent. My home is still adorned with Flagpole art.

I’ve been in Athens and reading Flagpole for 21 years now, and I have read a ton of articles in it. It’s not an article, but the great Eastside Five Star Day lemonade blow-up and attending internet comments are certainly close to my heart. So are Patrick Dean’s cartoons that ran every week for quite a few years. [HB] I’ve been lucky to work with some dedicated and talented freelance contributors during my time at Flagpole. They deserve all the fame and fortune. [GV]

I especially loved some of the stories we’ve done about various subcultures that most people don’t get to experience, because I think that’s at the heart of what an alt-weekly should do: write about the people, places and ideas that “mainstream” media ignores. For example, Sarah Anne Perry on pagans, Rashaun Ellis on polyamory, David Schick on burners and Kat Khoury on Athens’ Muslim community.

Schick scored a revealing interview with a UGA student who went to prison for making and selling thousands of fake IDs. Alex Laughlin found a rape victim who was willing to go on the record, which allowed us to humanize the issue of sexual assault on campus, not just delve into statistics. Stephanie Talmadge and Randy Schafer on homeless people and their dogs, and Stephanie’s hilarious diary about training for AthHalf. Kristen Morales has written some fantastic pieces on affordable housing, including digging into problems at Bethel Homes and a 3,000-word history of the Athens Housing Authority that was far more engaging than it had any right to be. Since the election, we’ve shifted gears and refocused on politics a little bit, and I’m proud of

the way we’ve covered how Trump Administration policies affect our most vulnerable populations. [Blake Aued] That’s an easy one: John Huie’s fantastic remembrance of the early days of the El Dorado, in the Morton Theatre building before the theater was restored. It should be required reading for everybody who loves Athens and loves Flagpole. This was probably in 2004 or so, and, come to think of it now, it probably subliminally motivated me to ingratiate myself at the paper in the first place. The piece is really a treasure. [BE] I always loved the cartoons. All the cartoonists were incredibly gifted and happy to share their talents and humor with Flagpole. I was impressed by how easy it seemed for them to crank out cartoons about Athens’ culture that hit home in a biting yet humorous way. [JB] I loved the two-part Molly McCommons-Michael Stipe interview. That was an interesting time for R.E.M. career-wise, and the pairing of those two was inspired, for sure. [JS]

Flagpole Flubs What’s a story you wrote that you wish you could forget?

I would try to be fair to all the local musicians in Athens, but for one particular record review, I did a horrible job. I won’t say who it was for, but it was a local favorite in frat party circles that most “townies” couldn’t stand. I’ll leave it at that. [HM]

I did not write the article by Patrick Keim about local punk band $hackler, but I published it. The reaction to the story was so strong that it almost killed Flagpole. [JB]

Not a story but a regret nonetheless. I wish I could forget accidentally calling AthFest “AssFest” on stage at the Flagpole Athens Music Awards. Alas, my dear “friends” are kind enough to remind me of the slip-up… every year.

[MGD] In hindsight, I was probably too eager to make #DavidLoweryBeefs a thing. Sorry, David. [GV] The Movie Dope listings that we wrote entirely in grammatically atrocious German (“Das Mövie Döpe”), just to see what would happen. Nobody thought it was funny. Not movie fans. Certainly not the Germans. [RF] For a short time, I had an intern from Germany: Fabian, a very nice college kid. Pete thought it would be a great idea to send him to Oktoberfest in Helen and have him report on it—kind of comparing ours to Munich’s. Initially, Fabian was very excited because he was a little homesick, but when he saw the bastardization of his country’s traditions, I think it played out more like a Werner Herzog film for him.

It didn’t go well for me. If I remember correctly, at one point a chef from Oxford, MS threatened to drive to Athens to beat my ass. Those Were the Days What’s your favorite Flagpole memory?

Flagpole was full of pranksters, and also people who took their work seriously and helped me develop ethics, discipline and a more mature perspective. It had a diligent copy editor named Margaret Moore who did as much as any other one person to help me improve as a writer in the technical sense. I think of her whenever I get into pedantic arguments about the merits of Chicago style versus AP, which are a major component of my marriage. Other than that, I remember hanging out late in the office on deadline days, splitting cases of beer with Ballard, cranking out copy and trying to make each other laugh. [ED] I will never forget sitting in Java drinking espresso made

by Vernon Thornsberry while I cranked out text for the ’Pole. As I sipped and wrote, Rick Hawkins, Dennis Greenia and Rachel Reynolds would scurry around the printing equipment using their magic to make a magazine out of the words and pictures I had cobbled together. [JB] Taking home first place in the Athens Business Rocks competition with my Flagpole comrades, The McCommunists.

Despite years of writing about bands, that was my first time actually in one… and a packed 40 Watt Club is a hell of way to make a debut. Maybe it’s time for a reunion show? [MGD] There was a major snow day when most of Athens shut down—January 2011, I think. It must have been a Monday, because Pete drove his Mini Cooper to my house to get me to the office to make sure that the paper went out that week. There was a skeleton crew there, just enough to get ’er done. At some point, some bourbon was involved, and Pete, Larry Tenner, Dave Marr and I started grabbing boxes and whatnot to use as sleds to slide down the steep hill on East Broad Street right next to the office. I remember Dave and I talking Pete out of the idea of sledding down on a metal office chair. Maybe we should have let that one play out. [CC] Hiring the 8-Track Gorilla to play our Christmas party. It was like we were Jeff Spicoli and the gorilla was Van Halen. [RF] It was a lot of fun being in on the ground floor of the creation of the Athens Press Club, which probably doesn’t even exist anymore. The club existed somewhere in the space between being simply a smattering of happy hours (usually

at the Georgia Center after taping “Athens News Matters” for WUGA) and being a bona fide alliance of media organizations banding together and pooling our resources to serve the people even better than ever before. Most important and most legit of all, the club put on a series of candidate debates that were a ton of fun. Remember when there were like 10 people on stage, all running in the special election for U.S. Congress? Live radio broadcasts from the Melting Point? And Andy Rusk’s surrender speech in that rollicking race for mayor? [BE] I did love being in the middle of an election, but I wasn’t on the winning side of too many that I cared a lot about. I took great pleasure in going up against Doug McKillip after he’d betrayed Athens in 2012, and though I was already gone from Flagpole by the time he lost his race, I felt like I’d done my part. I loved huddling with Pete and feeling like the stuff we worked out was going to make a difference in our town as long as we covered it properly. I loved working with Chris Cotter on editorial decisions when there were tough calls to make, like when Vic died and when R.E.M. broke up—not because those were fun or happy occasions, but because we had a special responsibility for our coverage that we took

seriously and that I think we lived up to. And honestly, I liked the staff meetings. Those are nice people. [DM] One is when the staff played that sadistic game where you take each other’s Christmas gifts and I ended up with a tin of breath mints shaped like penises. And then I complained about them, but instead of saying “penis-shaped,” I said “penis-flavored.” Priceless Freudian slip. Still makes me laugh uncontrollably. You had to be there. Another is the night Pete and I traded mezcal shots at 283 and ended up knocking off a liquor store. Sorry—package store. [Brad Aaron]

I’ve never been in the office on a regular basis, but I do remember, for years, walking down past the Farmers Hardware building to the old office to get my check or pick up some CDs (when I also used to write about music). I got trained there on how to put stuff up on the website. I got to flip through shelves and boxes of CDs to see if there was anything I wanted to write about (helllooo, Bubba Sparxxx).

I waved at Pete. I grabbed a brand-new copy of Flagpole.

And then I headed back out the door and up the hill, to my day job. I did it over and over and over, to where I didn’t even have to pay attention as I walked there. I’ve been in the new office two or three times. It still takes some effort to remember where it is. [HB] The best moments are fragmented and blurry (and that’s all I’m saying about that), but some of the best moments were also some of the most quiet and contemplative—just having a couple of beers with Dennis Greenia and crew at the Globe on a Friday afternoon, or listening to Pete McCommons tell the occasional ribald joke. I also have to put one specific moment at the top, now that I’m thinking about it: SXSW, the year we helped pull together the Jesus Christ Superstar show at the Austin Music Hall with the Indigo Girls and a (seeming) cast of thousands. That was one for the ages. [JS]

Southern Gothic Soars ‘EVERYTHING THAT RISES’ BLENDS MUSIC AND AERIAL THEATER

A

waking dream: That perhaps most accurately describes what attendees of Canopy Studio’s “Everything That Rises” are in store for.

In Canopy’s new show, music and movement mold together to create a storytelling experience. “It won’t be like a play,” Mary Jessica Hammes, ETR’s scriptwriter and Repertory Company member, says. “It’s going to be a very [immersive] experience,” she says. “We wanted to get… the eerie, strange, surreal feelings.” Hammes describes the “Southern gothic aerial theater performance” as a “gritty, rock-and-roll mix of Flannery O’Connor and William Faulkner.”

Hammes and director Melissa Roberts have both been interested in Southern gothic long before this production came under way. Hammes, whose first tattoo has O’Connor connotations, says, “[Southern gothic] was a genre of writing that I’ve appreciated from a very young age… I [first] read Flannery O’Connor when I was in third grade.”

Roberts, who has wanted to do “something Southern gothic for over a year,” according to Hammes, approached Hammes just under a year ago and asked her to write “either a script or short story.” They wanted to give an update to the typical Southern gothic story, and decided to set their tale in the late ’70s or early ’80s.

While non-traditional in time and performance, the Canopy repertory members go even further in stepping outside of the norm. The set, designed by Timera Temple and Dave Dykes, is often incorporated into the acts. The performance of Anne Shaffer, a repertory member and the wife of John Barner, the show’s drummer, will incorporate “banging on various ladders and metal things,” Shaffer says.

“When we first started brainstorming for the piece, we started thinking about ways we could actually use the equipment as an instrument.” By using taps on their shoes and even a little audience participation, percussion will be the main driving force in this act.

If your love for Southern gothic isn’t quite as extreme as your love of local music, this groundbreaking show will also appeal to you, as it features live music exclusively by Don Chambers and his band. When Roberts first had the idea for the show, Chambers’ music immediately came to mind.

“He encapsulates this genre,” Roberts says. “He can tell those stories. He kind of has that essence about him.”

Roberts listened to Chambers’ entire catalog for a while, trying to figure out which songs were most fitting for the show. She narrowed it down to about three or four songs per act, then the performers chose which they thought best fit their own acts from that selection.

“The combination of movement, imagination and music… is a new territory for us to explore,” Chambers says.

“We are creating a soundscape for them to move around in, a rhythm to react to. It’s a big ship with many people working to send the audience into a dreamworld.”

For fans of Chambers, this production is a chance to see his songs transformed and tucked within the confines of an overarching narrative. This “allows the songs to stretch out and be something they haven’t been before. You make all sorts of imaginative connections when you put a song in the context of a story,” Chambers says.

After getting to see some of the acts put together with his music, Chambers says, “It’s been surprising to see the choices and associations the aerialists have made—taking CHRISTY BUSH

a song that is about one thing for me and making it about something different.” But Chambers likes it for his music “to move and breathe,” he says, and “Everything That Rises” provides many opportunities for that. “What I’m excited about is having a visual… something completely different,” he says. “To have dance and movement to respond [to the music].”

With “Everything That Rises,” Chambers and the aerialists are pushing boundaries, and they are excited. “The fact that I’ve never done anything like this before, it feels a bit like I’m stumbling around in the dark,” Chambers says. “But I like that.… it’ll make it a bit of an adventure.” f

By Gordon Lamb threatsandpromises@flagpole.com MELLOW FELLOWS: It’s practically inconceivable that a smooth-jazz/light-funk Athens band would name itself Albatross, but then again, we’re the same town that buoyed a jazz band named Squat for several years, so anything is possible. Anyway, these boys just released a new three-track EP named Space Kitchen. The title track is an exploration of the things that make the singer thirsty (taking his medicine in the morning; “chillin’’’ in his Audi) and how he solves these problems like an absolute savage.

(He gets himself a glass of water.) The ante is upped even more on the War-lite “Howl at the Moon” and its lyrics of, I dunno, either revenge or resolution. Either way, the “man who took away [the singer’s companion’s] silver spoon” better watch out eventually, but for now, he can relax while the

singer “howl[s] at the moon.” Okey dokey. The bonus live track is named “Cassini,” and it’s the most “Jazz Odyssey”type thing here. And, honestly, at over 12 minutes long, it better damn well be. All in all, I can definitely say this is exceedingly well performed and deliberately composed, but it’s also very desperately looking for a personality that just isn’t there yet. OPEN THE FLOODGATES: Athens musician and scene impresario Mercer West is steadily dumping enormous amounts of material online. As of this moment, there are 14 separate “albums” of music from his Mans Trash project. Though they were largely recorded with traditional instruments (drums, keyboards, bass and guitar), West is also adept as hell with his MIDI skills, so there’s not a whole lot of, say, room sound going on. Most of this sounds like soundtracks for video games that don’t exist, or Muzak for housecleaning. All of it is catchy and ranges from the cleverly sublime to the permanently maddening, but at least there are no lyrics, so you can sing whatever you want.

I’ve no idea how old some of this stuff is, or if any of it is recent at all, but it’s all brand new on the web, so there ya go. The sheer volume of this archive is completely impressive, and you can hear it all at manstrash.bandcamp.com.

ONE FOR NOW: There’s exactly one song available to hear from new-ish band Blue Bodies, but it’s pretty darn good in a poor man’s Elvis Costello way. Self-Awareness and Sexuality THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF MICKALENE THOMAS

By Jessica Smith arts@flagpole.com Drawing influences from both Western art history and pop culture, the portraits of acclaimed African-American artist Mickalene Thomas contemplate beauty, identity and womanhood. A Yale graduate, she is best known for her glittering paintings of bold, glamorous black women that incorporate rhinestones, collage, acrylic paint and enamel.

Though she views herself foremost as a painter—with photography, collage and installation work serving as the foundation that guides her paintings—these preliminary components can stand just as strongly on their own.

Currently on view at the Georgia Museum of Art, “Muse: Mickalene Thomas Photographs and tête-à-tête” presents portraits of the Brooklyn-based artist’s muses—herself, her mother, her friends and her lovers.

Often lounging about in the same classic poses popularized by early modernists like Edouard Manet and Henri Matisse—an attempt at regaining agency for women who

have been objectified throughout art history—her models challenge traditional portrayals of the female body and desire. The women appear empowered and almost confrontational with their sexuality. Dizzying, upholstery-heavy

interiors stylistically gravitate towards imagery of the 1970s, hinting at influences from the civil rights movement to blaxploitation films.

Every painting Thomas creates begins with a photograph, and many of those photographs begin with elaborate sets constructed to become the environments for her models. Mimicking living spaces, these sets are full of clashing patterns—loud fabrics with floral, geometric and animal prints—that appear collage-like from a distance. The exhibition includes an installation of one such tableau: a wood-paneled living room complete with artificial house plants, a “Project Row Houses” by Carrie Mae Weems white tiger statue, a pair of red heels and a bowl of golden apples.

In the center of the installation, a vintage television finally thawed, then gradually blossomed, when Thomas plays a loop of Happy Birthday to a Beautiful Woman, a began asking her mother to model for her in art school. The short documentary Thomas created on her first and most photograph “Sandra: She’s a Beauty” proves just that; her mother wears a peaceful and knowing expression that is as eye-catching as her red fishnets and metallic accessories.

The second half of the exhibition is dedicated to what Thomas refers to as “tête-à-tête,” and presents artists whose work she finds inspirational or complementary to her own. Reflecting her ongoing ideas surrounding collaborative work, the pieces are intended to create a conversation with one another. The selected individuals approach complicated themes and questions that are central to her work: race, gender, sexuality, self-awareness and the physical body. Sharing this collection in conjunction with her own, Thomas hopes to further stimulate a new discourse through multiple contemporary perspectives.

The group of selected U.S. and African photographers includes Derrick Adams, Renée Cox, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Lyle Ashton Harris, Deana Lawson, Zanele Muholi, Malick Sidibé, Xaviera Simmons, Hank Willis Thomas and Carrie Mae Weems. Weems is of particular significance to Thomas, who recalls her show at the Portland Art Museum as a turning point when she became fully aware of how personal experiences can be channeled into impactful artwork.

Considering pop culture’s influence on her work, it feels appropriate that she should also influence pop culture.

In 2013, she was invited to participate in Jay-Z’s “Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film,” which modeled Marina Abromović’s installation “The Artist Is Present” and had guests line up in a gallery space to perform a song with him.

Thomas was also commissioned to create the album artwork for Solange Knowles’ EP True, and designed the set for the music video of its single, “Losing You.” significant muse: her mother, Sandra Bush. Filmed near “Muse” features over 40 works and was organized by the end of her life, Bush reflects on heavy topics including Aperture Foundation, a New York-based nonprofit dedidrug addiction and an abusive marriage. From Cabaret to Ntozake Shange NEW PRODUCTIONS BY UGA THEATRE AND THE BLACK THEATRICAL ENSEMBLE

By Dina Canup arts@flagpole.com Cabaret In 1966, the year Cabaret debuted on Broadway, Robert Kennedy spoke of a curse “which says, ‘May he live in interesting times.’ Like it or not, we live in interesting times. They are times of danger and uncertainty, but they are also more open to the creative energy of men than any other time in history.” The artists of our own interesting times, like the ones portrayed in this popular musical, are faced with this question: How do we go about our lives and artistic pursuits during a dark time when nationalists and Nazis are making a lot of scary noise?

UGA Theatre is pouring all of its creative energy into Cabaret. They’re pulling out all the stops in every facet of the production, set in a seedy nightclub in 1930s Berlin as the Nazis are coming into power. Director Freddie Ashley, the award-winning artistic director of Actor’s Express in

Atlanta, does not shy away from the clear contemporary parallels found in this classic musical. “There is a cautionary tale here, to be sure,” he says, “about the dangers of looking the other way when authoritarians are breathing down your neck.”

Cabaret is one of the greatest Broadway musicals. The original production won eight Tony Awards and the film won eight Oscars, with multiple Broadway revivals also winning Tony and Olivier awards. In addition to one of the top professional directors in the state, audiences here can expect the best in design and performance as well. Larry Cox Jr. (emcee of the Kit Kat Klub) and Katie Butcher (Sally Bowles, a singer at the Kit Kat Klub), graduate actors who have given particularly powerful performances in Sweeney Todd and Uncanny Valley during their time at UGA, are literally doing master work—these are their thesis roles—along with a cast of top-notch undergrads who can be expected to give don’t-miss performances as well.

In addition to the denizens of the Kit Kat Klub, there’s an aspiring novelist, Clifford Bradshaw (Eric Baylot), who falls in love with Sally. Another romance is blooming between Fraulein Schneider (Taylor Bahin), who runs the boarding house, and resident Herr Schultz (Matthew Suwalski). Sally gets in trouble at work, Cliff’s friend Ernst (Jake Berne) turns Nazi, and boarding-house resident Kost (Anna Alfredsson) starts trouble over the fact that Herr Schultz is Jewish. Meanwhile, the show goes on at the club,

nominations. It’s been published in book form, adapted for television, revived on Broadway, made into a major motion picture and performed all over the world. In his review of the film for Film Journal International, David Noh described the play’s Broadway debut as “a bracing, literal explosion of color, black power and feminism” while railing against Tyler Perry’s “ham-handed” adaptation for film. For the power of Shange’s words, the play’s the thing to see.

The various poems dance from heartbreak to violence to strength. There are laments of love gone wrong, celebrations of music and testimonials that resonate with Tarana Burke’s #MeToo campaign, with expressions of the love of words, colors and sisterhood. These women go through hard times, but as Ben Brantley of The New York Times writes, “there is undeniable triumph in the very act of the telling.” Especially when they tell their story together, moving “to the ends of their own rainbows.” For this performance, it’s UGA students telling the stories, directed by Regina M. The still-undefeated Bulldogs clinched the SEC East and beat South Carolina 24-10 Saturday in Athens by grinding down the Gamecocks and outlasting them in the fourth quarter. It’s a strategy that’s served the Bulldogs well all season, and is made possible only by a newfound intensity in practice. Between the fitness forged in those practices and a roster that is fresh and injury-free thanks to frequent blowouts, the Bulldogs are set to grind out the final three games, enter the SEC Championship Game at 12-0, then let the chips fall where they may in an epic No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup with Alabama.

The defense wasn’t at its best against South Carolina—Gamecock quarterback Jake Bentley threw for 227 yards and a touchdown— but kept the game manageable, created a few turnovers and got South Carolina off the field on third downs.

Georgia passed the ball a bit more than normal, which was unsurprising considering a Gamecock called out the Bulldog passing game last week. Also unsurprising: the efficiency of the passing game. Jake Fromm threw for 196 yards on 16-of-22 passing and a pair of touchdowns. He also helped the Bulldogs go 8-for-13 on third downs, which contributed to an overwhelming time-of-possession advantage and prevented the Gamecocks from mounting a comeback.

ture that emphasizes tough, physical practice. That’s the biggest change Smart has made in his two years in Athens. Last season, players noted (and complained) about how much harder practice was under Smart.

But they’ve embraced it since last season, and it’s made the team more fit and able to endure physical games and a long—potentially 15-game—season.

The grind continues this weekend with a trip to Auburn for a game that will tell us a lot about this team. With the SEC East locked up, the game with the Tigers loses a bit of its weight. Georgia could still make the College Football Playoff with one regular season loss. Against a top-15 team on the road, it’s a game ripe for a letdown. But if the team believes its mantra and keeps choppin’, the Dawgs should come out physical and prepared for a fight.

With the SEC East in hand, we can finally turn some of our attention toward the CFP and the selection process. Georgia got a lot of favors this weekend. Losses by Ohio State (haha) and Penn State (hahahaha) put a major dent into the Big Ten’s chances of making the field of four, while the Big 12 is also doubtful. If we can get some chaos in the Pac 12, there’s a chance an undefeated Georgia could travel to Atlanta with a playoff spot pretty much in hand.

Don’t worry too much about what’s going on in the rest of the playoff picture, though.

Georgia holds its destiny in its own hands.

If the Dawgs keep choppin’ and finish the way they should, nothing else matters. f

Ragnarok Is a Righteous Sequel PLUS, A NEW BAD MOMS ADVENTURE AND A WARMLY HUMAN DEBUT

Kenneth Branagh imbued the first with Shakespearean comedy borne out of a human god of thunder’s hubris. The Dark World is unmemorable at worst. (It was dark, right?) Then Ragnarok bursts onto the screen like a candy-colored comedy more in the vein of Guardians of the Galaxy than Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Still, more than any other film featuring Asgard’s mighty warrior, Ragnarok gets that Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is a badass and unleashes him to smite his foes with Mjolnir from the get-go.

However, the holiday stresses are tripled when the bad moms’ bad moms arrive.

Amy’s mother, Ruth (Christine Baranski), is a ruthless tyrant who will have her holiday plans carried out to the letter; Kiki’s mother, Sandy (Cheryl Hines), is nuttier than she is and has a penchant for clothing decorated with her daughter’s photos; and Carla’s bad mama, Isis (Susan Sarandon), is a former REO Speedwagon Thor: Ragnarok roadie (a pretty weak joke even for this flick) and unrepentant gambler. Outside of its central concept and fun stunt casting, A Bad Moms Christmas shows even less zip than its predecessor. I Need a Relationship Repair ADVICE FOR ATHENS’ LOOSE AND LOVELORN

Long story short, during the fight we both said a lot of things that were hurtful and insensitive, but I definitely upped the ante and took things too far. Mind you, I don’t mean or think the rude things I said.

I’ve tried communicating with him in the days following, but he has asked me to leave him alone. I want to respect what he wants and needs, which I have, but also want him to know how I really feel. He is very self-critical, and I don’t want him to think he has done anything that he hasn’t. Basically, I care a lot about him and will give him what he wants, but is there a respectful way and time frame for me to apologize and clarify without doing further damage?

But you’ve already taken the first step: You recognize your mistake and want to atone for it. Since you express that you’re both equally culpable for the current state of your relationship, I hope that he’s feeling some regret and a desire to atone as well.

But we’re here to talk about you, not him. He’s upset right now and kind of stuck there, and it’s his decision when he’ll let go of his suffering and move towards forgiveness. I can’t give you a respectful time frame, because now you’re on his time.

You put the ball in his court when you gave him the option to respond to you. You just have to wait for him to come around.

I think your methods, however, are plenty respectful and worthy of a response.

Bonita, Is there a trend between cuffing season and spring-fling season? Are people more loveydovey and willing to accept flaws due to the fact they don’t want to be alone though the cold months? They can Netflix and fuck all season, ’til spring, when it gets nice, and pool season, and then ditch out and become the Athens whores we all are. Wanting to make sure every season is a stable one. On to your question: Seasonal depression is certainly a thing, and I know that personally I pine for romance and partnership much more often during the cold season. I hope that people are being respectful and open-hearted in all of their intimate endeavors, but watch out for people who just want a warm body to snuggle until it’s pool-crashin’ time.

Athens is young and sex-positive— slutty in the most wonderful way—but it can be hard to navigate for the more tender-hearted of us. Communicate clearly with your romantic prospects about your dating style and what you’re looking for.

Let people know up front if you’re looking for sex or if you’re the settlin’-down kind.
