Denson Goes for District 5 Plus, Medical Marijuana, More Candidates and More Local News

By Blake Aued and Nate Harris news@flagpole.com Mayor Nancy Denson is term-limited, but there will be a Denson on the ballot in 2018.

No, Madame Mayor’s 2014 opponent, Tim “No Relation” Denson, isn’t going to try again to nab that third-floor office in City Hall. But with a recently purchased home on Quailwood Drive, a countywide campaign behind him and another three years’ experience in political organizing with Athens for Everyone, he’s ready to run for Athens-Clarke County Commission— against District 5 incumbent Jared Bailey, who’s usually an ally, no less.

“It’s time for me to step up in an elected role and try to get some of these policies enacted that we’ve been talking about,” Denson said last week, including addressing affordable housing, child care, a living wage, a comprehensive civil-rights ordinance covering more than bars, and the racial disparity in marijuana arrests, he said.

Last week, Flagpole reported that Denson and Briana Bivens had stepped down from A4E, the organization that grew out of Denson’s mayoral campaign and pressures the Mayor and Commission from the left. Now we know why: Denson wants behind the rail, and Bivens—who worked on the successful effort to beat back

Amendment 1, last year’s charter-school referendum—is his campaign manager.

Denson’s announcement will lengthen what’s already shaping up to be a stuffed 2018 ballot. Last year, none of the five commissioners who were up for re-election— Harry Sims, Allison Wright, Jerry NeSmith, Andy Herod and Mike Hamby—faced any opposition. Next year will be an entirely different story. Hilsman Middle School teacher and political newcomer Mark Martin is running for the District 2 seat Sims is leaving to run for mayor. Kelly Girtz is also leaving the commission to run for mayor, and school board member Ovita Thornton and PhD student and political activist Tommy Valentine are running in District 9. Lawyer and business owner Russell Edwards—best known for running against Rep. Paul Broun in 2010 and his anti-downtown Walmart crusade—is running against District 7 Commissioner Diane Bell. District 3 Commissioner Melissa Link and District 1 Commissioner Sharyn Dickerson are unopposed so far, but progressives have been scouting around for someone to challenge Dickerson.

He also pledged to hold monthly meetings in the district between agenda-setting meetings on the third Tuesday of the month and voting meetings on the first Tuesday of the following month to gather public input on agenda items. “I want to have a more engaged style of governing,” he said.

Of course, Bailey himself was elected as a progressive and remains one. He’s voted with Athens for Everyone’s position on almost every key issue over the past three years.

As Flagpole’s former publisher, he’s been fighting the good fight for 30 years. But while Denson is quick to say that his campaign won’t be about Bailey (or anyone else who runs), “the commission can do better,” he said. (Bailey declined to comment.)

More Medical Marijuana on the Way? Georgia’s foremost advocate for medical cannabis, state Rep. Allen Peake (R-Macon), will continue his efforts to expand access to the drug during the legislature’s 2018 session, he told the UGA College Republicans last week.

Peak explained the current state of medical marijuana in Georgia. It all started with a passionate email in 2014 from the mother of Haleigh Cox, a four-year-old with Lennox Gastaut Syndrome who at the time was experiencing close to 100 seizures a day, reaching out asking him to fight for medical cannabis to help save her daughter’s life.

After visiting Haleigh in the hospital, Peake decided to take up the fight. Just over a year later, Gov. Nathan Deal signed House Bill 1, which provides immunity from prosecution for possessing medical cannabis oil for eight specific conditions, including seizures, cancer, ALS and Parkinson’s Disease.

In 2017, six more qualifying conditions were added, including AIDS, Alzheimer’s, Tourette’s Syndrome and autism. Public polls show support for further expansion.

But there’s more to be done, Peake said.

The Commission on Medical Cannabis voted against cultivation in Georgia, meaning THC oil must be imported from other states. That runs up against federal laws prohibiting such action. Legislation in 2016 would have created an in-state cultivation model, but despite passing the Georgia House, it never reached the Senate floor.

Peake outlined two pieces of legislation

he introduced in the General Assembly: HB 645, which would allow licensing for medical cannabis cultivation, and House Resolution 36, which would place a referendum on the November 2018 ballot to authorize the state to regulate medical cannabis production.

In the meantime, Peake not only pushes legislation to increase availability, but helps individual patients. Once a month, he receives a shipment of bottles of cannabis oil that he gives away for free to registered patients. It’s a legal loophole that allows him to combat the short supply of oil.

Though he opposes recreational marijuana, “no one has ever died of a marijuana overdose,” Peake said, citing a recent study

by UGA professor David Bradford showing an association between legal medical cannabis and reduced opiod abuse. “They may have gotten the munchies.”

In addition to the federal stance on marijuana, the pharmaceutical industry poses a threat to moving forward with medical cannabis. Federal restrictions may be eased, if the CARERS Act of 2017, legislation in Congress that looks to end federal interference on state laws and reschedule marijuana, passes, Peake said.

In Clarke County, advocacy groups like NORML and Athens CARE have pushed for changes in marijuana laws, including decriminalization. Although Mayor Nancy Denson says she personally supports legalizing marijuana for personal use, she has blocked efforts to reduce penalties on the local level, based on the city attorney’s opinion that doing so would violate state law. Odds and Ends Our Daily Bread will be temporarily moving back to Oconee Street United Methodist Church on Sept. 9 while First Baptist Church undergoes renovations. The soup kitchen moved into First Baptist downtown after Oconee UMC caught fire in 2012, and decided to stay in the larger, more centrally located facility.

Plans have been submitted to renovate the ACTION Inc. building, also on Oconee Street, into a 38-bedroom apartment building. The developer is asking for a waiver from the county’s requirement that residential developments include first-floor commercial space, which was a sticking point when the ACC Commission rejected another development at that location 10 years ago. But that 2007 plan called for tearing down the historic 1908 building to make way for townhouses, whereas this one will preserve the former school’s exterior. The planning commission will get its first look at the plans Sept. 7, so check back next week for more.

As Flagpole reported last week, Chuck Williams has resigned his Watkinsville state House seat to accept Gov. Nathan Deal’s appointment as director of the Georgia Forestry Commission. At press time, two candidates for the District 119 seat had emerged: Tom Lord, owner of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, and Marcus Wiedower, a homebuilder who lost a race for Oconee County Commission last year to Chuck Horton. Both are Republicans. Deal is expected to call a Nov. 7 special election to fill Williams’ seat, as well as judicial appointee Regina Quick’s.

The knock on the ACC Department of Economic Development has always been that it focuses too much on the “big fish,” like Caterpillar, rather than fostering small, local businesses. To that end, the department has hired Michelle Nguyen as a business development specialist. “She will work with entrepreneurs and innovators in a role that was newly created as a response to feedback from the community regarding the latent opportunity to capitalize on entrepreneurship in Athens,” according to a news release. Nguyen has a BA in public policy from Duke and an MA in public administration from UGA, and previously worked as a special-events coordinator in Salisbury, NC, and in the ACC Human Resources Department.

Former ACC Commissioner Tal Duvall died last week at 83. Duvall, who retired as statewide director of the UGA Cooperative Extension, was one of the original commissioners elected after city-county unification in 1991, and he also served on numerous other local boards and authorities. He is remembered as an open-minded straight shooter who could disagree without being disagreeable—a trait that’s in short supply these days. [BA]

At Long Last, King Comes Home An MLK Statue in Atlanta Is Unveiled Among the Segregationists

By Tom Crawford tcrawford@gareport.com When the funeral cortege of Martin Luther King Jr. passed near the Georgia Capitol in 1968, the state’s segregationist governor, Lester Maddox, refused to acknowledge the event in any way. He did not close the schools in observance, and he made sure the flags on the capitol building were not lowered to half-staff.

I was a senior in high school then, a few weeks away from graduation, but I felt a deep sense of disgust at the actions of our racist governor. I never thought the state of Georgia could be more disgraced than it was when the General Assembly voted Maddox into the governor’s office. Maddox’s response to King’s assassination showed I was wrong.

Forty-nine years later, as a much older journalist, I am grateful I could be there on the capitol grounds to observe a much different scene last week. A statue of King was unveiled next to the capitol building that was once controlled by white supremacists like Maddox. On a cool, grey morning, with the wind whipping back and forth, King finally came home.

Martin Dawe has sculpted an 8-foot bronze statue of King based on a photograph that shows King leaving a courthouse in Montgomery, AL, during the 1956 bus boycotts. With an overcoat draped over the left arm, the statue of King seems poised to stride into history.

Ironically, his statue was erected at that moment in American history when the country is torn over whether we should take down monuments honoring the Confederate generals and soldiers who fought to preserve slavery. “This day is no accident,” said King’s daughter, the Rev. Bernice King. “It had to happen on this day, at this time, with everything happening in this nation.

“This statue provides a sense of hope to a nation that is in turmoil once again,” she said.

Even with King’s likeness on display, there are still plenty of monuments to racism and white supremacy at the capitol.

A few hundred feet from the King statue is a statue of John B. Gordon, a Confederate general, a former governor and one of the founders of the Ku Klux Klan. Not too far from Gordon you will see a statue of Richard B. Russell, a racist who spent his entire senatorial career fighting against the passage of anti-lynching laws and civil rights legislation. There is also a statue of Eugene Talmadge, a virulent racist whose actions as governor caused the University of Georgia to lose its accreditation.

Those inconvenient facts didn’t matter to those who spoke at the King ceremony.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed noted the long time that King’s supporters had to wait before state officials finally agreed to place his statue at the capitol. King used to say that the word “wait” usually meant “never,” but with the statue in place, “that never has become now,” Reed said.

“This day took much too long to get here,” agreed House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge). “We cannot reclaim or relive those days, but we can learn from and enjoy them.”

State Rep. Calvin Smyre (D-Columbus), who helped broker the complex arrangements that resulted in the statue being cast, noted that King’s monument was being unveiled on the 54th anniversary of his “I have a dream” speech in 1963 at the March on Washington.

“Today is a defining moment in our state’s history,” Smyre said. “Let’s not squander, but take advantage of that moment.” f

From Arpaio to Putin Crime as Politics in the Age of Trump

While Arpaio seems to be generally sadistic, he prides himself on being especially cruel to people with brown skin, whom he racially profiled and held in their own segregated part of his “concentration camp.�

This unconstitutional racial profiling is the source of the crime that Trump pardoned.

Donald Trump’s pardon of former Maricopa County sheriff and top-notch torturer Joe Arpaio is, in many ways, the quintessential Trumpian act—the tarry, smelly extract of the president’s politics.

In the same Phoenix campaign rally— yes, it was actually paid for by Trump’s 2020 campaign—where Trump spent 15 minutes attacking the press and Antifa and defending “our heritage� embodied in Confederate statues, he all but promised that Arpaio would be pardoned, but didn’t actually do it. Instead, he waited until Hurricane Harvey was bearing down on Houston to pardon America’s most famous Torquemada impersonator, because he thought the ratings would be better.

But even more than all of this, Arpaio’s career is an encapsulation of what matters most to Trump: sheer, brute force masquerading as law. Politics as crime or crime as politics.

The stories that the Phoenix New Times ran about Arpaio over the course of two decades constitute a crash course in American fascism. Not only did Arpaio openly call his tent-city jail a “concentration camp,� but the rate of suicide in his jail was double or even quadruple that of most other jails. Many of these deaths were never even investigated. Jailers denied people medical coverage and strapped them to a torture chair if they raised any hell about it. They closed the only vents bringing fresh air to hot cells, causing at least one death.

Arpaio failed to investigate reports of sexual assault.

When the New Times reported on Arpaio’s real estate interests and included his address, he tried to bring charges against the reporters (who were also the founders of the paper). Later, his men arrested the reporters at their homes in the middle of the night for revealing grand jury

Maricopa County Sheriff’s office to stop detaining people on suspicion that they had immigrated illegally, i.e. because they had brown skin. He also tried to destroy hard drives that were supposed to be handed over as part of the investigation and hired a private investigator to spy on the judge and his wife.

Reading the stories highlighted by the New Times’ now-viral Twitter thread laying out 20 years of Arpaio’s criminal politics, I was reminded of Ron Rosenbaum’s wonderful and tragic portrait of the Munich Post, which covered Hitler from before the Beer Hall Putsch to until he took power—and then killed most of the writers and editors of the paper. Like the New Times, the paper mixed hard-hitting investigative pieces with

In 2008, George W. Bush’s administration began an investigation into Arpaio’s racial profiling. In 2011, the Department of Justice ruled that he had in fact been engaged in the systematic profiling of Latinos in Arizona.

The case in which Arpaio was charged with criminal contempt of court stems from even before the DOJ investigation, when a 2007 traffic stop became a class-action suit. A 2011 court order commanded the

satire and humor intended to taunt, and ideally thwart, the soon-to-be FĂźhrer. “There were other opponents to Hitler, but they were the ones who were constantly investigating him and discovering things that were really not well known about Hitler’s rise—how much he depended on his death squads to murder his political opponents, for instance,â€? Rosenbaum told me back in February, when the Los Angeles Review of Books published a piece that

revisited the chapter on the Munich Post in his 1998 book Explaining Hitler.

According to Rosenbaum, the Post’s essential insight into Hitler was that he was a political criminal. While later historians have credited Hitler’s rise on his power as a public speaker, the Munich Post showed that murder, extortion and blackmail played an even larger role. While others were laughing off Hitler in the same way we laughed off Trump or the alt-right, the Post tried to open the public’s eyes. They uncovered Nazi party documents in 1931 that contain the first mention of the “final solution� to the “Jewish problem.�

So when Sheriff Joe “jokes� that his tent city is a “concentration camp,� we should take note. When he raids the homes of journalists who question his shady business dealings, we should take note, and we should be on guard. When Trump pardoned Arpaio, he was sending a signal that he, like the Arizonan torturer, has contempt for the court and rule of law. It was also a promise, not only of more brutality, but perhaps that he would pardon those probed by special counsel Robert Mueller, should charges arise.

Political criminality explains Trump’s fevered admiration of Vladimir Putin, who is the master criminal politician. (Read Masha Gessen’s The Man Without a Face if you want to be chilled to the bone.)

The emails from Felix Sater—a convicted criminal and informant with longtime ties to Trump and his organization—promising Trump’s lawyer that Putin would help get the Donald elected president are only the most recent example of the Trump/Putin nexus of political crime. “Our boy can become president of the USA and we can engineer it,� Sater wrote to Michael Cohen. “I will get all of Putins [sic] team to buy in on this, I will manage this process.�

Athens PRIDE Reaches Out

LGBT+ Festival Grows in Light of Today’s Politics

Athens Youth PRIDE focuses on providing support and education to middle school and high school-aged youth in the Athens area who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary, queer or questioning in any aspects of those identities. They meet once a month as a general support group with community-building events sprinkled throughout. They really like game nights at The Rook & Pawn, says Kirkpatrick, so that’s where the Athens

he first American gay pride parade was called the Christopher Street Liberation Day March and happened in 1970—a direct response to the riot at New York City’s Stonewall Inn the year before. What began as a somber march to commemorate loss of life and highlight police violence has evolved into a festival celebrating freedom and diversity, and it’s a tradition practiced in cities both small and large.

Athens PRIDE began in 1998, when then Georgia Review managing editor Annette Hatton organized a potluck picnic of LBGT+ friends at Lake Herrick.

Hatton founded GLOBES (which stands for Gay, Lesbian Or Bisexual Employees and Supporters, though the group stresses that its “outdated” acronym does not exclude any community members from participating) with colleagues Nancy McNair and Vernon Wall in 1994, primarily to address the needs of LBGT+ faculty and staff at UGA, but the need for broader community support was immediately evident. The picnic was mostly just a community-building effort, according to Athens PRIDE Vice President and UGA instructor DeeDee Kane, and the local interest in the event was overwhelming.

Around 2011, “they really felt that they’d outgrown Lake Herrick, and so they moved to Lay Park,” Kane says. “There were about 15 [vendor] booths, they had a diva [drag] show, they had food.” Fun times were had, but they still felt that the space was too small. “So we decided to try downtown,” Kane says. Now, the festival is on Washington Street.

LBGT+ communities of old didn’t have such a focus on health and wellness, since the social stigma of the past meant that the community spaces of yesteryear were mostly grimy bars, public parks and rest stops. However, it’s not helpful to judge the behavior of a shunned group doing what they could with what they had, and the past of LBGT+ Americans has shaped them into the more wellnessfocused group we see today. Keeping with that theme, Nick Combs of M3 Yoga will host Rainbow Flow Yoga to benefit Athens PRIDE at his new location in the Chase Park warehouses on the opening day of this year’s celebration.

“Having my own studio and being able to open the space at will was really important to me,” Combs says.

“Yoga’s been a safe space for me as a gay man, and I want to provide that for others. I have such a cool community to partner with, and I want to do that any way I can.”

Rainbow Flow differs from typical yoga in that Combs opens each class with a general check-in. “Sometimes we all have very similar struggles, and I really try to foster that community vibe and increase a sense of awareness just by providing a safe space,” he says. It’s also another opportunity for LGBT+ people and their allies to meet outside of bars, he adds.

Athens PRIDE has grown from a friendsonly potluck to a citywide celebration of personal expression with a focus on community support, health and wellness, and that couldn’t have happened without the snowballing interest of a city whose citizens want to support each other. “The community support has just been amazing,” Kirkpatrick says. “As the social and political climates have changed since the election, there’s been a lot of fear in the community. But there’s been more presence and more visibility [from allies], even when it looks like a low-income person donating $5. We’ve seen a lot more of that this year as opposed to last.

“And that has shocked me—to my core,” she says. “It’s one of the reasons that make it so easy for me to want to stay in this town and call it home.” f

Hate, not Heritage The Persistence of States’ Rights as a Fig Leaf for Racism

If only this were all arcane ancient history. But the states’ rights fever never broke, spiking again and again after Appomattox, maybe never more virulently than after the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1954 decision striking down school segregation.

Just a few years later, when then Alabama Governor George Wallace defied a federal court order to admit two African Americans to the University of Alabama, he claimed to be acting in the name of “the sovereign state of Alabama” against the “illegal usurpation of power by the Central Government.”

And not 10 years ago, the states’ rights fever dream broke out again when the “state sovereignty” movement, ginned up by the conservative Heritage Foundation and the equally conservative American Legislative Exchange Council, saw more than half the nation’s state legislatures adopt resolutions that largely reproduced Thomas Jefferson’s Kentucky Resolutions of 1798, reviving the undead Articles of Confederation reading of the Constitution. Chip Pearson, then a Republican member of the Georgia state Senate from Dawsonville, described the resolution as reaffirming “our rights as a sovereign state” against a federal government running way out of its lane.

(You remember who was president in 2009, right?) Dismissing newspaper editorials raising the same alarms that rang in Jefferson’s ear, Pearson soothingly characterized the Senate’s resolution as no more than “common sense” based on principles of “Jeffersonian democracy.” Obviously he either didn’t know or didn’t want anybody else to know about the reception Jefferson’s resolutions got in 1798.

And just recently I watched an interview on PBS with a spokesperson for the South Carolina Secession Party, whose platform didn’t even mention secession but was big on “flagging” as many public places as possible with the Confederate battle flag, all in the name of “heritage, not hate,” of course.

So what about those flags, monuments, plaques, markers and other echoes of the Confederacy? The “heritage” they celebrate isn’t magnolias, mint juleps and Moon Pies.

It’s the claim of state “sovereignty, freedom and independence” that goes all the way back to the Articles of Confederation. And that’s the heritage that still tragically rationalizes and enables the white supremacist hate. In part, what’s made “heritage” the brain-eating zombie that refuses to die is that people who want to hide behind it from the unforgiving moral clarity of our Charlottesvilles can invoke the names of luminaries like Jefferson and Henry.

By all means, then, let’s have the conversation about flags, monuments and the rest. But even if they’re consigned to museums, cemeteries or scrap heaps, let there be no illusions about the persistence in too many minds of the “heritage,” spawned in the earliest days of the republic, that abetted the flags and monuments in the first place. f

Gregory Frederick Documents the Scene, One Show at a Time

W

ith the number of clubs, performance halls, bars, breweries, restaurants and other live-music hotspots in Athens—even the local library hosts concerts—you’re guaranteed to find at least one show to attend on any given night. And if you go, there’s a good chance you’ll run into Gregory Frederick there. Wherever “there” is.

In January 2014, Frederick, a former school teacher, realized the need for documentation of the current Athens music scene. He had an interest in photography, a steady hand, an iPhone and the time. “None of the stuff that was in the ’70s was archived well, and it needed to be done,” he says. “And the teacher in me said, ‘Hey, I’m retired. I can do this. Why not?’”

So, Frederick began what has become Athens, GA Live Music. He began regularly attending and documenting local shows, starting by taking videos on his phone. “I’ve treated it like a job—that you need to be out there. You had to show up. You had to do what needed to be done.” Frederick says he has shot as many as seven full sets in one night, and up to 21 consecutive nights in a row. “I felt like I was on tour,” he says.

Frederick is no Roger Deakins, and at first, his work focused more on the documentation aspect than on the quality. But Frederick admits that “quality counts,” and says he hopes to continue to improve.

But boy, does he document. Frederick normally posts videos on his Athens, GA Live Music YouTube channel within 24 hours of shooting them. He has posted over 8,400 videos on his page so far, and says he is happy to get

3,000 videos up in a year. On average, that’s more than three a day. This speaks both to the amount of music played in Athens—nightly, weekly, annually—and to Frederick’s willingness to get out there and record it.

Frederick’s project not only conveys the spirit of Athens music, it exudes uniquely Athenian qualities, such as the integration of musicians in the wider community. “I’m rubbing shoulders with people I’m seeing on stage the night before… and will see on stage the next night,” Frederick says. His documentation also speaks to the “proliferation of venues” in Athens. For Frederick, this “has made it an easy go-to. Both the number of venues and the proximity of venues.”

By attempting to communicate with at least one band member at every show to inform them of his recording, Frederick tries to make clear to performers that he respects their rights. Most artists are willing and, usually, excited to let him do his thing.

And because the musicians are usually not making much money, Frederick believes it would be wrong to try to benefit financially from his project. “I did not want to monetize this,” he says. “I did not want to make money off of the artistry of the musicians in this town.” His main goal, Frederick says, is to allow the artists to “see what they did last night.”

In addition, Frederick funds his entire project on his own. That includes cameras—he has improved on the iPhone—gas, parking, tickets and sometimes drinks. He assumes these costs most nights—for two and a half years now. Frederick even goes as far as refusing free entry to shows. “It’s been offered numerous times,” he says. “I sometimes take people up on it, but most of the time not.”

Frederick’s work has not gone unnoticed. The artists that he documents, venue owners, doormen and, most recently, the Athens Area Arts Council have taken note. On Aug. 1, the AAAC announced that it would award Frederick a $500 grant.

“Offering a grant to Gregory is our way of recognizing the countless hours he has put into supporting the local community,” says AAAC Grant Chair (and Flagpole Arts Editor) Jessica Smith. “His video archive is inarguably the most comprehensive and accessible record we have of the current music scene, and is significant not only in the way that it documents day-to-day happenings and captures performances that may have flown under everyone’s radar, but for its ability to present Athens to a worldwide audience.”

For Frederick, the grant acted as validation of his work.

“The grant has given me a bit of a boost, in the sense that people in the arts scene are truly valuing what I am doing and what I have done,” Frederick says. “It tells me that what I am doing is right.” The money has also given Frederick a chance to improve the quality of his work. Though he still pays for tickets and drinks, he looks forward to using the money to purchase a new microphone for better audio.

Though he works largely on his own, Frederick is eager to acknowledge his wife, local audio engineers and venues, people who worked to document the music scene before him and the UGA Music Business Program, among others, for helping him take his project this far. Content Avoiders Material Girls Want to Stay Off the Online Grid

hen nearly every waking moment is captured by a smartphone camera, documented in a tweet or archived via Facebook status, the truly unique experiences in life start to lose their flair. You’ve lived vicariously through your co-worker’s dog for weeks now in every possible filter, and you’ve read every hot take on Donald Trump’s presidency from both sides of the aisle. Sure, social media has made life more convenient, and the likes feel kind of nice, but at what price?

For the drag-punk ensemble—consisting of former members of Atlanta and Athens bands Chief Scout, Concord America and Slang—doing without what many deem a bare necessity in 2017 has only made it more enigmatic, giving the group an elusive edge over a saturated city scene. News of Material Girls began to spread by old-fashioned word of mouth in late 2016 before the release of a limited edition, lathe-cut 7-inch, “Drained� b/w “Tightrope,� which put to record the band’s enthralling live show. The two singles combined elements of shadowy post-punk and glamorous cabaret to dramatic and thrilling effect, proving that the band was more than just the sum of its make-up and high-heeled parts.

With punchy brass, ominous yet raucous guitar licks and a lead vocal that alternates between members while maintaining a distinct guttural growl, the band has carved out a niche that avoids most contemporary rock and punk trends. “Material Girls embodies all that is missing from current music and art,� the band writes. “Haven’t you noticed your life before Material Girls and after Material Girls?�

Additionally, a string of East Coast dates is imminent, though talk of writing and recording plans is vague. “All that needs to be known is that things are different now, and we will keep tweaking the knobs and tweezing hairs from between the eyebrows of our monster as we let it run free to roam the earth,� writes Material Girls cryptically.

As the band continues to beguile, make sure to keep a keen ear to the ground for updates on goings on, as “the social media whirlpool, the Cook Out drive-through window of inane quizzes and pictures of food� won’t be tipping anyone off anytime soon.

Russ Hallauer’s New LP Is True to Tradition Plus, More Music News and Gossip

Hallauer’s music is a mix of folk, bluegrass and old-time, and Mind Your Fire is a tight, 10-song record that stays pretty clearly in its lane and remains true to its traditions.

Ghostmeat is known for its coordination and release of the multiple AthFest CDs that have come out over the years.

HOMEMADE JAM: Although he didn’t mean for this to be any sort of official release and definitely wasn’t seeking press attention, I’d be totally remiss in my duties if I didn’t fill y’all in on the set of songs just put online by Athens visual artist Alexei Gural under the title Where We Are Now. He really just put these up as a way of clearing the decks and having it out there. For this collection, Gural worked totally by himself. Everything is guitar-based but has occasional keyboard flourishes (“Patterns in the Dye�), and all the drums were programmed. Gural’s music is deeply influenced by 1990s alt-rock—specifically Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, et al—but there’s also a little bit of Rush poking around (“These Windy Plains,� “It Goes Away�). On paper, this isn’t something obviously in my

wheelhouse, but Gural’s voice is solid and strong, each tune is really a complete accomplishment, and he’s done a superb job with this. It’s totally enjoyable, and you can check it out at alexeigural.bandcamp.com.

Fall Shows at Lyndon House, Dodd Galleries and Athens Academy

The Lyndon House Arts Center has six new exhibitions, offering something unique for art lovers, sports fans, techies and history buffs alike.

Themed on leisure, competition and physical sports, “The Game Show” includes paintings by Meg Aubrey and

Dodd Galleries: Four new exhibitions at UGA’s Lamar Dodd School of Art invite viewers to contemplate the many ways art can effectively build bonds on interpersonal or cultural levels. “Rosemary Mayer: Beware of All Definitions” offers a small survey of the postminimalist and feminist artist’s practice as it shifted from geometric paintings on shaped canvases to sculptural works of dyed and draped fabrics. In “Primary Information,” the New York-based nonprofit of the same name shares works from its catalog and archive, which aims to publish affordable artists’ books and promote the conceptual practice of using publications as method of distributing work to a global audience.

Touching on themes of attachment, memory, physical distance and the passage of time, “Losing; Keeping” is a collaborative project between MFA candidate in painting and drawing Annemarie DiCamillo and Los Angelesbased artist Luke McCusker, who developed a collection of collaborative works as a way of preserving the memory of each other. Inspired by the League of Lady Wrestlers, MFA candidate in printmaking and book arts Kaleena Stasiak organized the South East Women Wrestlers as a performance-art collective attempting to reclaim the sport from hypermasculinity, and their fantasy alter egos are documented through the exhibition “SEWW.” The galleries will host a Fall Art Extravaganza on Friday, Sept. 8 from 6–8 p.m. with a DJ, photo booth and snacks from Da Munchiezz food truck and Nedza’s Waffles.

Gallery director Katie Geha and curator Marie Warsh will offer a discussion on Mayer in Auditorium S150 on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 5:30 p.m. Lunchtime Gallery Talks will be offered at 12 p.m. for “Primary Information” in the Art Library on Sept. 8, “Losing; Keeping”in the Bridge Gallery on Sept. 20 and “SEWW” in “Deflated Balls” by Curtis Ames is on view in “The Game Show” at the Lyndon House Arts Gallery 101 on Oct. 11.

Zane Cochran’s interactive installation “Aurora,” inspired by the northern lights, is a beautiful dark room full of suspended lanterns that glow and fade in response to visitors moving through the space.

“All that Remains is Nowhere: A Sampling of 21st Century Book Arts” features simple book structures, unexpected sculptural forms and conceptual book art by Brian Hitselberger, Eileen Wallace and curator Margot Ecke.

Exploring the many functions of stairways, “Connecting: Stairways to…” is a multimedia installation of sculpture, photography and video by Thom Houser.

On view in the Lounge Gallery, a space dedicated to quarterly exhibitions by emerging artists, Timothy Adams presents a series of work reflecting influences of minimalism, intense color and basic geometric forms. Celebrating the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation’s 50th anniversary, “Captured in Time” presents a blast from the past with photographs of downtown and unidentified houses collected from the Facebook group Growing Up in Athens, GA. The Lyndon House Arts Center will celebrate several new fall exhibitions on Thursday, Sept. 7 from 6–8 p.m. A Game

Athens Academy: Unbeknownst to many locals, Athens Academy has several gallery spaces dedicated to rotating exhibitions of both student and professional artwork. On view in the Bertelsmann Lobby Gallery, three-dimensional mixed media pieces by Barbara Odil accompany paintings

by Ainhoa Bilbao Cebrero. Odil’s assemblages combine natural materials like wood, shells, seeds and bones into anamorphic creatures. Cebrero—whose style you may recognize from the mural decorating Ben’s Bikes—is influenced by her background in architecture and industrial design. An opening reception honoring the two artists will be held on Sunday, Sept. 10 from 2–4 p.m.

In addition to the aforementioned exhibition, the school has two other shows to check out while you’re on campus.

On view in the Myers Gallery, “Horace Farlowe: Paintings, Drawings and Sculptures” shares works by the Lamar Dodd professor emeritus of art, who passed away in 2006.

Heavily influenced by his background in architectural studies, Farlowe created massive sculptures that visually balance unusual geometric forms. On view in the Harrison Center Foyer Gallery, “Animals: Paintings, Sculpture and Drawings” is an exhibition comprised of works by local artists. Athens Academy’s galleries are open to the public Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m., and visitors are requested to check in at the Chambers Center. f

The 2013 documentary Design Is One: Lella & Massimo Vignelli chronicles the lives and accomplishments of the Italian couple well-known for their designs that influenced everything from packaging, housewares and furniture to the New York City Subway map and St. Peter’s Church in Manhattan. Primarily working within the modernist tradition, the Vignellis applied a minimal aesthetic to projects that ranged between the fields of interior, environmental, graphic and product design. Food Trucks and Pop-Ups Grab and Go at These Quick-Service Spots

By Hillary Brown food@flagpole.com EXPRESS YOURSELF: The brand spanking new Manila Express food truck doesn’t have regular hours or a consistent location yet. For the moment, you’ll have to track it down on Instagram (@manilaexpressga) and cross your fingers. Ask a young person if you do not do the social media. Its adorable proprietors, Rachel Barnes and Alfredo Lapuz Jr., are working on making its goods more available, but it’s also worth seeking out. The truck, which focuses on Filipino food, was busy retailing at the recent food truck party hosted on the lawn of Milledge Avenue Baptist Church, and although the line was long and the weather steamy, things came out of the window speedily and with good cheer.

Don’t expect to eat yourself silly. The portions aren’t huge, but they have a crazy amount of flavor.

Lumpia—essentially Filipino egg rolls—are probably the most Manila Express familiar thing on the menu, aside from rice, and they come out of the fryer burning hot, stuffed with juicy, salty pork. They don’t need either of the dipping sauces that accompany them—a sweeter one that kind of resembles duck sauce and a magical one that seems to contain mostly vinegar, garlic and water and could add some kapow to anything—but that doesn’t mean the sauces are bad.

Next best is the chicken adobo, which doesn’t look like much (just sort of a pile of grayish hunks in a sauce) but tickles each and every taste bud with coconut milk, vinegar, more garlic and whatever else is in there. Don’t forget the pork belly barbe-

a little longer, or maybe it needs a massage with some salt, and the the sariwa (a sort of summer roll with raw veggies and peanuts) needs more flavor. You could dunk it in the aforementioned vinegar sauce and improve it mightily.

On the whole, it’s all very successful, with garlands of fake flowers and black-andwhite paper straws adding some ambience to the usually spartan world of a food truck.

As you might expect, pretty much everything is made from scratch, including the hot dogs (although the casings have to be ordered). They’re on the dense side, as most housemade sausages tend to be, but

the flavors are on point—salty and meaty, as they need to be to pair with the sweetish yellow bun. Tofu dogs are available too, and it’s a credit to what I think of home. made that I almost ordered one, but in the end I couldn’t do it. There are plenty of areas in which fake meat or vegetables are a perfectly adequate substitute for animal protein. Hot dogs aren’t one of them.

That said, the toppings are pretty great, so maybe they could make a tofu dog decent. For $5, you get as many as you want, chosen from among: comeback sauce (not the JB’s variety, but a Thousand Islandish pink concoction), a super funky kimchi, a nice green tomato relish, a way-spicy hot pepper mash (go easy when you spoon it on, unless you want your lips to tingle for a good while), thin-sliced onions, a watermelon rind relish (which I missed), a bottle of organic ketchup and some Tropicaliaaccented grain mustard.

Up the amount you fork over to $7 and you’ll get a side with your dog, either a lovely lemon-dill-mayo potato salad (the potatoes having been seared in a hot pan) or a cool, refreshing salad of sliced cucumbers and onions.

The stand even takes credit cards.

ONE MORE THING: If you haven’t noticed, the Holy Crepe food truck has been setting up on Sundays from 11 a.m. to about 2 p.m. in the parking lot at Boulevard and Park, where it lives, and serving not only the usual stuff (sweet and savory crepes, crepe dog), but also a few brunchier items, including a crepe made with White Tiger Gourmet’s pulled pork and a runny-yolked fried egg. It is a fine alternative to a breakfast biscuit, although a giant mess to eat. f

I want to stay informed when it comes to the moral atrocities being committed by our president, in order to know how specifically to focus my energy and resources in response, but I am tired of seeing dude’s face every time I flip on the TV or scroll through social media. How can I take a break from the news cycle while continuing to actively resist? Your advice is yugely appreciated.

I can relate. I’ve made attempts to keep Trump out of my social media feeds and general conversation, too, because, plain and simple, it can be very upsetting and even triggering to read some of these headlines. How can a member of the LGBT community even stand to open their Twitter accounts nowadays? Or a person of color?

Through Black Twitter, I’m able to see the big headlines of the day, but through the lens of people like me—feminists, brown people, activists. You need Black Twitter, or something like it, in your life. It’s a much warmer feeling than reading a stark headline blandly informing me of another atrocity.

What’s your political angle? Find some good sources that appeal to you.

Intersectional feminists could start with Black Girl Dangerous, and people who want humor alongside relevant headlines and social justice might like VerySmartBrothas.

I was able to plug into Black Twitter by just following the right people and organizations, and eventually those blogs came across my feed.

I’m forreal worried for the Muslim members of my family while he’s in office, as well as the communities of undocumented immigrants that keep many blue-collar industries moving in our state. I’m worried for myself, a queer woman of color, and the fact that it’s becoming more and more acceptable to openly hate the people of any demographic to which I belong. I am well aware that my body is a threat to some people, and those people have a lot of power in this country right now. This is not a joke.

Trump-related news is an assault on our very existence half the time. If he’s not refusing to condemn neo-Nazis and racists, then he’s insulting female journalists and stereotyping entire groups of American citizens. Consuming the news at full blast is an all-around bummer for those of us who either differ from the status quo, or have hearts. Imagine my horror/panic when an ex-hole of mine rolled up to the bar where I wanted to sit quietly and write to you tonight. I’d rather walk over and buy that cautionary tale another round (of antibiotics) than read another Trump headline.

Trump generates scores of headlines every day, and I realized I was doing myself no favors by trying to keep up. Why not let my community distill all this info and communicate it to me in a way that doesn’t make me fear for my life? A person’s general state of well-being is way more important than knowing the minutiae of this dumpster-fire presidency.

Find better news sources, and stop talking to any centrist or right-wing friends of yours about politics. Save those conversations for people who are more aligned with you politically. Look at more joke blogs and meme pages, where they make the news funny. Talk to people who have your same political views, and be secure in the knowledge that you’re not being close-minded by protecting your mental health and keeping your stress level as low as possible.

Let your community be your filter, and you’ll still get tips on how to fight the good fight. You don’t have to inflict the worst upon yourself to be on the right side of history. f
