Firefly Trail Is Fully Funded Again Plus, Candidates for Judge and Commission District 7

Lott is politically connected—she is married to former Athens state Sen. Doug Haines—and had raised nearly $30,000 as of June 30, according to a disclosure filed with the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission. Contributors include a number of local lawyers and other prominent Athenians, such as former mayors Heidi Davison and Gwen O’Looney, Commissioner Allison Wright, former Commissioner Kathy Hoard and Eric Linder, rabbi of Congregation Children of Israel.

Although the race is nonpartisan, it’s clear that Lott is supported by Democrats, and that whomever Deal appoints will be a Republican (otherwise, he or she wouldn’t have been appointed). It’s not easy to unseat a sitting judge, but the partisan dynamics of the Western Circuit—Democrats in Clarke County outnumber Republicans in Oconee—make it possible for Lott to win.

There’s a twist here involving the House District 117 race: Quick is not running again either way, but if Deal appoints her, she will have to resign from the legislature, which would trigger a special election. That would be bad news for Democrat Deborah Jackson, who would have less time to catch up to her two Republican opponents in fundraising—as of June 30, she had raised a little under $8,000, compared to $66,000 for Houston Gaines, and former state Rep. Doug McKillip had kicked in $102,000 of his own money.

The Guide Is Out!

The biggest political story in the country, the defeat of Obamacare repeal legislation, featured an unlikely appearance by Georgia congressman Buddy Carter.

Carter, who is serving just his second term in the House of Representatives, is one of many Republican congressmen who want to kill off the Affordable Care Act. It’s almost an obsession with him.

You might think it odd that Carter would want to shoot down Obamacare. It’s been estimated that repealing the law would result in the loss of health insurance for about 64,000 people residing in Carter’s Savannah-based district. It doesn’t make sense that Carter would want to hurt so many of his constituents, but then, this is a guy who really hates Obamacare. He hates it so much that he got a little carried away after the Senate failed to pass one of the motions to repeal Obamacare.

That repeal motion lost in large part because two Republican women, Sens.

Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, voted against it. When asked what he thought about Donald Trump criticizing Murkowski in one of the president’s tweets, Carter blurted out: “Let me tell you, somebody needs to go over there to that Senate and snatch a knot in their ass.”

Carter’s rustic remark caught fire and touched off a genuine media frenzy, with everyone trying to explain what it meant to snatch a knot in someone’s hind quarters.

Some media observers accused Carter of calling for violence against women. Not so, said a spokesperson for Carter, who quickly sent out a clarifying statement: “Rep. Carter’s comment was in no way directed towards Sen. Murkowski specifically…

Searcy Succeeds

Carter later tweeted that he was “shocked this is so confusing.” He was forgetting that people from other regions don’t always talk the way that Southerners do. Consequently, it’s easy for something to get lost in translation.

The phrase “snatch a knot in their ass”—a milder version of it is “jerk a knot in their tail”—is one of many slang expressions a person hears growing up in the South. These Southernisms often have a hint of violence, especially when they are said in the heat of anger or frustration.

You’ll hear someone say, “I’m gonna snatch you bald-headed,” for example, or “I’m gonna whip you like a red-headed stepchild.”

These regional phrasings also can be quite humorous. One of my favorites was the one I heard from a state legislator who was about to vote on a very controversial bill: “I’m as nervous as a whore in church.”

To use some other Southernisms, Carter was so upset at Murkowksi that “he’s got a burr under his saddle,” or “his knickers are in a knot.” Maybe he was “having a hissy fit.”

What some people see as colorful phrasings, however, are seen by others as physical threats, especially in these hyperpartisan times.

By the end of last week, Carter’s colorful language turned out to be all for nothing.

Two days after Carter’s memorable diatribe against the senator from Alaska, the Senate voted down the last attempt to pass a bill that would repeal Obamacare. Murkowski and Collins once again cast the negative votes on that motion, and they were joined

by Arizona Sen. John McCain in shooting down the bill.

I didn’t see Carter trying to jerk a knot in anyone’s tail at that point, but I’m sure the congressman was feeling “lower than a snake’s belly in a wagon rut.” f

Stop Fetishizing Normalcy Trump Supporters Voted for Him Because He’s Not Normal

Retiring Judge David Sweat’s Legacy Extends Beyond the Courtroom

A

legal case doesn’t end at the courthouse doors. This simple idea motivated David Sweat throughout his nearly 40-year career, first as a defense lawyer and ultimately as a judge.

When Sweat retired last month as chief judge of the Western Circuit Superior Court—which hears civil and felony criminal cases in Clarke and Oconee counties—he left behind a legacy of modernizing outdated legal practices. He argued against discrimination in favor of fairness and community-wide solutions to address substance abuse, mental health and rehabilitation issues. “I’ve always said that if we can drag the courts kicking and screaming into the 20th Century, there’s hope that we can get them into the 21st Century,� Sweat says. “Many times, cases that seem unsolvable come up the courthouse steps, and we have to look outside to address them.�

Sweat, who was elected to the Superior Court in 2002, served more than 14 years and was re-elected three times.

At the end of July, more than 100 Athens lawyers, court staff, mental health workers and police officers celebrated his retirement in a packed room at the Classic Center. The Mayor and Commission presented Sweat with a key to the city. “The No. 1 promise he made during his campaign was to be fair, and he has been,� says Commissioner Mike Hamby, who served as Sweat’s first campaign manager. “He worked hard for people’s votes, and I saw that in action during budget discussions with the commission.�

In those discussions, Sweat advocated for a Treatment and Accountability Court, which provides those with mental illness and substance abuse problems with longterm treatment plans to follow alongside their sentences.

Created in 2008, the court has kept more than 275 people out of prison while on probation. “He spent a great deal of time trying to help people find ways to minimize the negative effects of issues that would make them more likely to get arrested again in the future,� says John Donnelly, head of the circuit’s public defender’s office.

Sweat has also supported other accountability courts, such as the Felony Drug Court, Veterans Court, DUI/Drug Court and Family Treatment Court. Last year, he pulled together local criminal justice advocates, health care providers and mental health groups to create the Justice and Mental Health Collaboration, which uses grant funds to help criminals with mental health or substance abuse issues rather than send them back to prison. “When he was a lawyer, I remember him taking a discrimination case that his colleagues said wasn’t worth the time and trouble,� says Probate Court Judge Susan Tate.

“He always said that if we really believe someone is suffering an injustice, there’s always a way to right that wrong.�

Sweat also pushed for sales-tax funding to build the diversion center, a sort of halfway house that opened in May 2012 and houses more than 50 nonviolent offenders, allowing them to work and support their families instead of languish in prison. “Court can be a scary and confusing place for many people‌ and they will tend to agree with anything a judge says,â€? says Edward Brumby, chief assistant public defender. “By asking open-ended questions, Judge Sweat made sure people weren’t being rushed through a decision they didn’t understand.â€?

Under another SPLOST proposal, Sweat started a technology-driven case management system that better organizes information across several courts in Athens, incorporates video conferencing and allows court agencies to share real-time data. A new grant requested this year could pair a mental health professional with law enforcement officers during crisis situations related to domestic violence, substance abuse and mental health. Along with other judges, after evidence emerged that private probation companies were overlooking violations so they could keep collecting fees from probationers, he pushed to bring the program in-house. “What attracted me to Athens at first is that it’s a place for second chances. People can reboot themselves,�

Chief Probation Officer Dale Allen says. “When we started probation services nine years ago, the judges said they wanted to bring compassion, transparency and humanity to the table.�

At the state level, Sweat served on the Council of Superior Court Judges’ Uniform Rules and Accountability Courts committees.

Once he became chair of the former committee in 2012, he created new rules for courts across the state, and Gov. Nathan Deal appointed him to the Georgia Commission on Family Violence in 2015. “Serving as a judge is more work than people realize, in terms of the emotional and mental strain,� defense lawyer Mo Wiltshire says. “I witnessed Judge Sweat on the bench many times, and he tried to make a difference and treat everyone the same.�

Sweat’s legacy won’t stop here. Gov. Deal will likely appoint him to become a Superior Court senior judge to serve in mediations, arbitrations and judicial settlements.

Deal will also appoint one of three finalists to serve the rest of Sweat’s term, which ends Dec. 31, 2018. (See City Dope on p. 4 for more.) “I like to dig into cases and understand them. Even criminal cases have a larger picture when you incorporate the other party, the family members and the community,�

Sweat says. “I try to find solutions that improve the mess at hand, but also the community as a whole.�

In the meantime, he plans to travel around the country with his wife, Kay Giese, who retired as ACC Municipal Court Judge in 2010. He also plans to spend more time with family and friends, including many of the people he met while a lawyer and judge.

During his retirement reception, Sweat gave special recognition to his staff, court deputies and bailiffs who often don’t receive applause for their daily actions that keep courtrooms running smoothly. “When you see a judge on a bench, you don’t see all the people who make the job easier,� he says. “I’ve always felt that if we could work hard and do it together, there was no limit to what we could accomplish.� f

Reese Street: Still Educating Athens

Home of Many Black Teachers, Neighborhood Holds Part of Athens’ Forgotten Past

ext door, Boss Billups was a Baptist minister. Down the street, Camilla and Vernon Howard were teachers. In small houses in between—some owned, some rented—lived cooks, drivers, porters and maids. They were among the many families who made the Reese Street area a thriving, middle-class black neighborhood in the early 1900s. For decades, it was a neighborhood of homeowners and entrepreneurs.

Today, in between the smaller cottages, stands a twostory house that was home to two generations of teachers and the second black dentist in Athens—a house that the family who built the Varsity restaurant on the opposite side of the block some 50 years ago wants to tear down, prompting a recent demolition moratorium.

But what makes the house unique isn’t just the Mack/ Burney family who lived in it for nearly half a century—the same Burney for whom Burney-Harris-Lyons Middle School is named. Rather, it’s that the house represents a crossroads of Athens: the invisible lines separating black and white; lines erased between professionals and laborers to create a tight-knit community; and the color lines crossed with school desegregation.

Black Professionals Shadows of the historically black Reese Street neighborhood remain today, but what longtime residents recall from its heyday is a tight-knit neighborhood of families who valued education and community. “I’ve lived all my life within this square,” says 92-year-old Robert P. “Skip” Payne, who lives on Rocksprings but was born in a house on Broad Street that since has been torn down. “Except for the time I was away at school or in the service, I was in this area… I guess I just felt at home.”

For more than 150 years, Reese Street and Hancock Avenue were the center of residential life for many in Athens’ black community. The portion of the neighborhood east of Milledge Avenue was designated a local historic district a decade ago—it was home to historically black schools and Hill First Baptist Church. In contrast, the streets west of Milledge have a history that’s tied more to the people who lived in the buildings, rather than the buildings themselves.

For example, in 1920, families who lived along Reese Street west of Milledge included pastors, teachers, doctors and merchants. Andrew Payne, one-half of the namesake of Mack and Payne Funeral Home and Skip Payne’s grandfather, lived at 957 Reese St.; his neighbor was a teacher. One block up lived an insurance agent, and around the corner on Billups Street lived a pastor, a baker and his wife, a doctor.

“There were a lot of teachers in this area,” Payne says, noting three couples within a stone’s throw of Reese Street that were teachers. But, he adds, if you had money to buy property, there were only so many places you could own it.

“At the time we were living, we were restricted to this area.

You couldn’t buy property beyond the area distinguished black. I don’t know if it was set up like that, but you knew you weren’t going to buy a house in that [white] neighborhood, that’s for sure.”

Payne, who was also a teacher, recalls attending the West Broad Street School as a child—a wood frame building that formerly was a tuberculosis hospital. When he was in sixth grade, it was torn down, replaced by the current building.

Elsewhere in the neighborhood, Ruth Payne (no relation), 90, who was the first black teacher at Athens High School before it became Clarke Central, recalls what it was like to grow up on Billups Street. “It was a village. We didn’t have crime. It was nice—even though we had a hook on the screen door, nobody hooked the screen door,” she says in an interview recorded by Amy Kissane, executive director of the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation, and Kimberly

Skip Payne’s grandfather’s home on Reese Street is now the annex for Ebenezer Baptist Church West. Like the Burney house one block away, there is talk of tearing down the former Payne house, to make way for a new church building. “That was the family home,” he says. “They talk about tearing it down, but it should be preserved as a historical site, because it’s one of the oldest houses.

“If you look around the neighborhood—across the street there were teachers, the Drakes’ home on one corner, the guy was an interior decorator, and on the other corner were schoolteachers. It’s a pretty prominent area up in there. But people don’t care about all that. They’ll tear all that down.”

Educators Abound One block away from the Payne home, at 853 Reese St., is the two-story home where Annie Burney grew up. Her parents, John R. and Charlotte Mack, were a middle-class black family at the start of the 20th Century. Her father bought the house in 1906 for $600 from the Clarke County Building Loan and Improvement Company, which required a weekly payment of $3.84. Mack ended up paying the loan off early, buying the house outright in 1909.

Burney was one of nine children, and she followed in her father’s footsteps by becoming a teacher as well. According to Michael Thurmond’s A Story Untold, Burney’s father taught at a school for black children on Baxter Street until 1893, when it was closed to be remodeled for white students. The black children who attended that school were split between two others, one on each side of town. Mack was appointed principal of the smaller East Athens school, where he was one of three teachers; the westside school became the West Broad Street School.

Mack worked alongside Samuel Harris, who became principal of the West Broad School in 1903 (and later married another educator, Judia Jackson Harris). Ten years later, the first high school for blacks, the Athens High and Industrial School, was built on Reese Street east of Milledge Avenue. According to A Story Untold, Samuel Harris became the principal there in 1917, teaching 10th grade while also supervising all the black schools in Athens. Burney worked with him, teaching eighth and ninth grade and serving as assistant principal.

“She sorta ran things anyway,” says Payne, one of Burney’s students. “She was one of those folks who runs things.”

He also remembers doing odd jobs for her when he was in high school, helping out in her big white house around the corner. Her husband, Isadore Horace Burney, was the second black dentist in Athens but died in 1938, 18 years after they were married. Their son, also named Isadore Horace, was born in 1912. “I would get coal and do little things around the house for her when she was my math teacher. It’s a great big house with lots of fireplaces,” he says. “She also took in young folks who came to Athens to teach, and she would rent rooms to them—teachers at the high school.”

Burney died on Oct. 19, 1963, after living in the house for more than 50 years. While her siblings moved out over the years, she and her husband stayed put. In her final years, Payne recalls, the Hackney family looked after Burney and, after her death, purchased the house for $10.

Reed also notes, though, that it wasn’t unusual for homes to be moved, or portions of older homes used in the building of a newer one. Early maps of Athens did not include that portion of Reese Street, although the magnolia trees that line Milledge Avenue beside the Varsity parking lot were once the grand entrances to stately homes, and city directories from the late 1800s note some residences on Hancock Avenue and Reese Street west of Milledge.

One other clue points to the antebellum age of the home: The woman referenced in the 1889 deed for the Burney house is likely a descendant of Hugh Neisler, who came to Athens in the early 1800s with the distinction of being the town’s second doctor (after the previous second doctor left, according to Augustus Longstreet Hull’s Annals of Athens, because “one doctor, one lawyer, one blacksmith and one preacher were sufficient” for the time). Six months after Neisler’s heirs sold the house for $250, the new owner sold it for $175 to the Clarke County Building Loan and Improvement Company—which sold the house, 25 years later, to a black family.

He had heard rumors for months that the educator’s home was slated to be torn down, but he didn’t know where it was located until the Gordy family pulled the demolition permit. Flanigan says the history lesson helped open his eyes to the amount still unknown in the local black community.

Shape-Note Singers Keep a Southern Tradition Alive

odern participants in shape-note singing, an a capella form of worship music that dates back at least to the 1840s, typically discover the tradition though academic research interests or regional family ties.

“The fact that it’s been preserved and passed down as an active tradition for so many years is something that academics have found fascinating,” says Joanna Smolko, a music professor at UGA and Athens Technical College.

“Also, there’s been times that, through writing about the book, writing about traditions or through participating in it, academics have worked hand-in-hand with local singers to help preserve documents.”

It’s no surprise that Athens, a college town surrounded on all sides by rural communities, has a rich history of shape-note singings advanced by scholars, students and families that have kept the tradition alive for generations.

The tradition assigns shapes to musical notes in songs about the Christian faith. Prevalent hymnal The Sacred Harp utilizes “fa,” “sol,” “la” and “mi.” The syllable assigned to each shape is sung through once, setting the pace and tone that will be replicated when participants sing the lyrics.

Tenor, bass, alto and treble singers sit facing each other, creating what’s called a “hollow square” formation. Anyone, from first-timers to members of established shape-note families, can pick and lead a song.

“It’s not a performance,” says John Hollingsworth, a retired UGA math professor. “It’s participatory worship, so that’s the way we gear it. If people come, we want them to sing.”

This simple, stirring and democratic form of worship can be found in Athens at least once a month. The “Teenth Tuesday” singing from The Sacred Harp, held on the Tuesday that falls between the 13th–19th each month, is marked by

Christian fellowship and hospitality. It’s folk music crossed with old-time religion, featuring songs that might have otherwise been lost to time and potluck snacking inspired by the traditional Southern “dinner on the ground.” All that’s seemingly missing is an old country church—the singing is held in the home of local singer Shannon Primm.

Smolko’s PhD dissertation focused on the impact of shape-note hymns on 20th Century composers. Her continued research on the topic finds that shape-note singings were regularly mentioned in local newspapers between the 1840s–1920s, when the tradition seemingly faded away, until the folk revival of the 1960s triggered its ongoing resurgence.

Local research interest in shape-note singing began in the early 1970s. Longtime UGA chemistry professor John Garst aided in the 1973 republication of The Social Harp, a lesser-known shape-note hymnal compiled in the 1850s

by Hart County singing teacher and farmer John McCurry.

That same year, an annual February singing—now held at the State Botanical Garden—debuted. It remains the only annual singing anywhere that uses The Social Harp.

The 1978 publication of Buell Cobb’s The Sacred Harp: A Tradition and Its Music by UGA Press furthered the role of Athens in recording shape-note singing’s past and ensuring its survival.

In 2017, shape-note singing represents more than preserved religious practices. These events revisit a secular society that valued music education and shared folk traditions.

“It can be daunting at first [for new singers], since there’s so many people who never sing in groups now,” Smolko says. “We’ve left so much of the music to professionals, especially as some schools start to cut their music programs.”

Hollingsworth also joined the local shapenote community at one of the Social Harp singings in 1973, but it was hardly his introduction to shape notes.

Hollingsworth was continuing a lengthy family tradition he first encountered as a child in Mississippi, where he sang from the Christian Harmony hymnal.

“My grandfather on my mother’s side was born in 1870, and he was the leader in the shape-note singing in that county,” Hollingsworth says. “I suspect that he started singing very young.”

Hollingsworth lists four key draws for singers who become regulars at singings across the region, whether they were pointed to the tradition by family, academia or even popular culture, such as the 2003 film Cold Mountain.

“One thing, of course, is the fellowship,” Hollingsworth says. “One thing is the worship service. One thing is people enjoy being part of an old tradition. Then some of it is just the sound. We like the music. There’s four factors. All are important. For different people, different factors are more or less important. For me, all four are important.”

Each semester, new students arrive as potential practitioners of a sacred music tradition that’s practically unchanged since at least the mid-1840s. Whether they have been exposed to hometown singings or are complete novices, any of these students may be one moving performance or a new favorite hymn away from sharing regular fellowship and song with Smolko, Primm, Hollingsworth and other modern-day folklorists.

Punk Legends Play ‘CBGB Athens’ to Help Homeless Vets

ayne Kramer—best known as the wild-haired guitar player for Detroit-based proto-punk outfit MC5—laughs when mulling over what it means to have been involved with philanthropy, in one form or another, for some 50 years. Be it through the explosive, free-jazz-inspired guitar assaults in songs such as “Kick Out the Jams,� “Rocket Reducer No. 62 (Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa)� and “Teenage Lust,� which brought far-left frustrations in the ’60s and ’70s to a fine point, or providing guitars to inmates via the Jail Guitar Doors organization, Kramer is an agent of progressive change through music. “Anything I can do to help make a difference in people’s lives is always a good thing to me,� he says.

At 69 years old, there is warmth and sincerity in Kramer’s voice that reflects a lifetime of highs and lows: nearly achieving superstardom in the ’70s followed by public battles with drug addiction, a two-year prison bid for selling cocaine to an undercover officer and finding success as workaday musician, composer and producer.

In a phone conversation from his home in Los Angeles about his anticipated trip to Georgia this weekend, Kramer moves seamlessly into talking about the work of the Athens-based Artist2Artist nonprofit, which hosts fundraising parties, concerts and other events to help artists, musicians, actors and other creative types pursue their craft during times of financial need. The organization also focuses on bettering the community at large. Such is the case on Saturday, Aug. 5, when Artist2Artist hosts CBGB Athens, a benefit show at The Office Lounge to help Athensarea homeless veterans.

Saturday’s lineup features classic jangle-pop, post-punk and rock and roll and will be headlined by Kramer, backed

by Atlanta musicians Shannon Mulvaney on bass, Adam Renshaw of The Forty-Fives on drums and Adam McIntyre of The Pinx on guitar. Other performers include Television guitarist Richard Lloyd and his band, Peter Holsapple of The dB’s, Dashboard Saviors with Dana Downs, Michael Guthrie and Cortez Garza.

Artist2Artist co-founder Lisa Mende invokes the organization’s catchphrase when she says it will be a night of “partying with a purpose.� Proceeds from the show will be

donated to the Veterans Relief Fund, to help veterans who require assistance paying their rent, security deposits, utilities and other living expenses. “Homelessness in America is to our great national shame and international embarrassment,� Kramer says. “To see the way that the wealth in this country is handled— hedge fund managers, big pharma and real estate developers are reveling in massive amounts of money—and to see this while we have veterans living out of doors is unconscionable.�

It’s a sentiment that Lloyd underscores, speaking from his home in Chattanooga, TN. “Artists and veterans are both dealt a pretty harsh lot in life,� he says. “You don’t hear a lot of stories about plumbers and doctors living in their car or sleeping on the street while trying to support their craft.

Organizations like this provide support for people who need it, and that’s important now more than ever.�

Artist2Artist was cofounded in 2016 by Mende, who serves as president, and Jean Biddle, the group’s secretary-treasurer.

Alongside them are Vice President Danna Whaley and board members Brigitte DeSimone and Burton Hood.

Mende is an actress, best known for her role as the “Seinfeld� character Carol.

She also appears in Gremlins 2, “Sex and the City� and, most recently, Adult Swim’s “Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell.� She lives in Athens now, but knows Kramer from her days of working in Los Angeles.

Mende and Biddle have a history of pairing up for themed nights involving music, starting with a benefit for Project Safe’s Dancing With the Athens Stars. “Jean was the head of the fundraising committee for that night, and we discovered that we’re really good at throwing these extraordinary parties,� says Mende. That first event was dubbed Fillmore Athens, for which local musicians formed Kinks, Zombies and Yardbirds cover bands to recreate the legendary East Village rock venue Fillmore East.

Since then, Artist2Artist has experienced a swift ascent amid Athens’ many nonprofits, and CBGB Athens pushes its growing concept to the next level, while staying focused on improving the community one show at a time. “These kinds of challenges don’t change in a year or 10 years or even in a lifetime. We’re working toward the kind of changes that come over a millennium,� Kramer says. “Health care will happen nationally. Probably not in my lifetime, but we’ll get there. All of this is the stuff of democracy and the stuff of civilization-building. The wheels turn slowly, compared to a human lifetime, but if we look at it in the big picture, we’re doing great.� f

Shehehe Is Here to Save Your Summer Plus, More Music News and Gossip

By Gordon Lamb threatsandpromises@flagpole.com SATURDAY NIGHT’S ALRIGHT: As promised, here’s more information about the new Shehehe record. It’s titled Endless Summer, spans a relatively mammoth 14 tracks and comes courtesy of Laser Brains Records.

This is the tightest and best put-together release Shehehe has ever been party to.

Everything here is well executed, rehearsed and tautly composed. Fans will recognize the band’s varied influences, but those are starting to shed like snakeskin as Shehehe coalesces more and more into a selfcontained unit that just, well, sounds like itself. The huge doses of ’70s-ish fourpart punk are totally up front, but there’s a gigantic power-pop flag waving, too.

For example, “Sorry You Love Me� and “Dirty Life� can go head to head with any badge-wearing bowlcut boy band that ever darkened Stiff Records’ door. Throw this in the car stereo, pick up your pals, and go drive around town lookin’ for a party to crash.

Technically, it comes out Aug. 11, but hell, just grab Shehehe it at the release show the next night, Saturday, Aug. 12, at the 40 Watt Club. Palace Doctor, The Grawks and Twinki round out the bill. ENCOUNTERS: Michael Potter (Null Zone Records, The Electric Nature) has picked up the baton of hardest-working experimental music promoter in town and run with it.

He’s been steadily if relatively quietly promoting superb bills that deserve attention.

a cool, ’80s-mellow debut tune by Lucky Kitty called “New Friends.� There are also new songs here by Harlot Party, Tabloid and William Kissane. TWO IN THE HAND: Recently, my memory was jogged into remembering how common two-band bills were long ago in Athens.

Now, many shows are packed with three or more bands, which is ironic, considering there are exponentially more stages in town. But if you want at least a small taste of how things used to be—starring some people who were actually there—head to the 40 Watt Friday, Aug. 4. The newly refreshed Dashboard Saviors will play with that eternal flame of Athens rock, Hayride. Also, listen up: Dashboard Saviors were actually the very first band to ever play this location of the 40 Watt. No one remembers this, but it’s true. Go ask ’em.

The program’s goal is to keep women and children healthy, mainly through good nutrition, but also making sure mom and kids are getting doctor check-ups and breastfeeding is going well.

WIC will also give new moms vouchers for certain foods that are good for breastfeeding moms, because producing a good supply of milk requires good nutrition— things like peanut butter, milk, bread and certain kinds of juices.

Every year, economists scare the crap out of reach out to women with new babies to help support them. One of the key changes I wanted to make was breastfeeding. When our first child was born, money was tight, and I had to go back to work quickly. That was also before federal mandates required employers to provide a space for a woman to breastfeed, so the only option I saw at the time was switching to formula. Which is fine, until you have to go buy it.

It’s really expensive.

Thus, the irony of families on a limited income going to the store to buy formula. If you’re able to breastfeed, and you don’t have to drop $150 or more a month on formula, it’s better for your bank account.

Now, with baby No. 2, my mantra isn’t solely about how great breastfeeding is for your baby. It’s simple economics—if you’re able to produce food for your baby, and you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for it, why wouldn’t you?

Turns out, I’m not the only person who has realized this. What’s provided through the program is simply meant to add to what a breastfeeding mom can’t provide.

Sanchez also told me that a lot of moms assume they don’t qualify for the WIC program, but even if they have health insurance, there’s a chance they will. And even if you feel you have a solid support network once you bring the baby home, having a peer counselor stop by every so often can still be helpful. Often, Sanchez said, in-laws, mothers and grandmothers offer up lots of well-meaning advice that’s so dated, or not even based in reality, that they’re doing more harm than good.

For example, some cultures look down on breastfeeding, preferring to give babies bottles instead. Or, there’s pressure on the mom to feed her baby more (“Are you feeding that baby enough?� is enough to trigger a weeklong guilt trip in most moms anyway), and so a new mom might turn to formula to supplement when she doesn’t have to. And once you start moving to formula, your body’s supply of milk begins to decrease—and that mother-inlaw’s admonishment becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The WIC peer counselor helps deflect all of this, plus provides support to get mama and baby off to a good start.

As a federally funded program, our local WIC office could be affected by the budget floated by the Trump Administration earlier this year. It calls for cutting $200 million overall, which might seem like a fraction of the program’s overall $6.4 billion budget, but when you consider that the program helps moms and babies stay healthier while spending less on things like formula or unhealthy food, it seems like something you would want to help, not hinder.

Art Persists See ‘Nasty Women Athens’ at Trio Gallery

Following Trump’s inauguration, Crist and Taylor— along with Taylor’s 13-year-old stepdaughter Penny Merva, who contributes a drawing to the exhibition—drove to D.C. for the Women’s March in January. They also donated prints and buttons to local protests, but still sought ways to engage with and support the community. When Veneruso suggested the idea of opening Trio with a “Nasty Women” exhibition, they saw it not only as an opportunity to promote a cause they believed in, but as a method of encouraging community members to discover and express their own beliefs. The gallery intends to host at least one exhibition per year to fundraise for local causes.

After a decade of basement shows and DIY activities, the former Secret Squirrel on Broad Street will continue to be a center for artists and musicians as Pixel & Ink Studio’s new location. While the main floor is dedicated to co-owners Carolyn Crist and Laulea Taylor’s business, the upstairs level is open as Trio Contemporary Art Gallery, directed by Tatiana Veneruso, and plans are underway to transform the lower level into a venue.

Months of work went into renovating the three-story building. After receiving the keys in January and clearing out abandoned remnants, they began working on the facade, most notably an interesting black-and-white mural by James Greer where the Money Machine sign once was. Inside, they painted all the walls, sanded and stained the floors, finished the ceilings and installed HVAC, new lighting and electrical upgrades.

Moving into the new space has allowed the studio to expand its services, which have previously centered around archival printing, scanning, editing, photo restoration and art reproduction. Now, Pixel & Ink will also offer custom framing, with a special focus on unique, harder-to-find colors and textures. In addition to helping artists select the perfect frame, Crist and Taylor hope to work more closely with them by organizing workshops, gallery shows and features for Athens Art Prints, their side project that enables artists to sell on-demand prints.

Come fall, the co-owners will begin printing and pressing images onto metal, wood, acrylic, tile and fabric with recently purchased equipment.

Several pieces bring political activism to the forefront, like the floor-to-ceiling portrait of three women standing in front of the White House by Ariel Dannielle and photographs of protesters by Crist, Beth Thompson and Andrea Wellnitz. Others borrow sensationalized catchphrases, like Melody Croft’s oil painting “Nevertheless Persist” and Lindsay Troutman’s abstracted “Her Wherever.” Locals in the show include Cameron Bliss, Claire Clements, Lisa Freeman, Vivian Liddell, Drema Montgomery, Stacey-Marie Piotrowski and Marilyn Wolf-Ragatz. Jacob Wenzka offers another portrait of free-spirited Juniper, who graced Flagpole’s cover last week.

“Art is a language,” says Veneruso.

“Sometimes words do the job, but sometimes you need something visual to express yourself or to tell a story. And the subjective nature of art can really encourage further dialogue.”

Pixel & Ink’s next major endeavor is to transform the basement level of the building into The Revolution Room, a space that will honor the Secret Squirrel’s legacy by continuing as a center for creativity and experimentation. Under the direction of musician and visual artist Jim Wilson (The TaxiCab Verses, Los Cantares), the venue will serve as a space for concerts, plays, film screenings and other events. While it will be rentable and open to performances of all kinds, some of the bookings will specifically focus on community activism and social justice.

“I have a lot of great memories of seeing shows at the Squirrel,” says Veneruso. “I have lived in Athens 11 years now, and hung out there a lot in those early years. I love the spirit of the place, and we wanted to honor that with this space—to be welcoming and give artists opportunities for experimentation and collaboration.”

The studio will launch a crowdfunding campaign within the next month to support renovations, which will include rebuilding the stage and installing a sound system, lighting and recording equipment. To pay homage to the Secret Squirrel, old show posters will be hung to decorate the space. If all goes well, renovations will wrap up by the end of the year.

“Nasty Women Athens” will remain on view through Sunday, Aug. 20, and can be visited during Pixel & Ink’s regular hours, Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Hosted by Ming VaseDynasty on Friday, Aug. 4 at 7 p.m., We Will Not Be Silent: A Night of Performance will feature poetry, comedy, dance and performance art by Andrea Boyd, Jennie Cain, Erica Parson, Andrea Wellnitz and others. THE BEGUILED (R) Surprisingly, Sofia Coppola’s Civil War slice of female empowerment is a remake of a nearly forgotten Clint Eastwood film. Having never seen the 1971 version, I can only imagine it pays more attention to Clint and less to the ladies than Coppola does in her slowcooked Southern Gothic stew.

A wounded Union soldier, Cpl. John McBurney (Colin Farrell), takes refuge in a strictly run women’s school that happens to be home to Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and sultry-eyed Elle Fanning. As McBurney heals, the sexual tension rises (Christian charity? I think not), as does the cattiness among the women.

Though the trailer presents a more menacing film (Fanning’s “Hope you like apple pie” line implies a bone-chilling fate), Coppola slowly increases the heat as McBurney’s desperation grows. Every performance in this rather small ensemble is strong, and the Oscar-winning filmmaker has not delivered both style and story with such control since Marie Antoinette.

GIRLS TRIP (R) Talk about a movie that needs a better trailer. Had you sat through the preview as often as I have and heard Jennifer Haddish so forcibly repeat “Booty hole!” ad infinitum, you would not expect much laughter from this comedy either.

Out of the wiry, angular and occasionally dreary bunch, Atlanta trio Omni is arguably the most promising with something still to prove. The group, which includes former Balkans and Deerhunter guitarist Frankie Broyles and former Warehouse drummer Doug Bleichner, is more danceable than Parquet Courts and more lighthearted than Preoccupations and Savages—a winning combination. Omni’s forthcoming sophomore album, Multi-task, due in late September, will certainly give the band a chance to cement its place among a field of taut peers. [Andy Barton]

You didn’t ask a question, but I can sense what it is: What do you do about your lovelorn, bothersome friend? Your boy’s heart is broken, clearly. My guess is he must have been the catalyst for the split, because he seems to be working with some major guilt here. Why else would he be wondering if she’s safe? He lost his “protector” role before he was ready to relinquish it.

I’m glad your friend is able to keep her distance from this guy, because he sounds pushy as hell. But I respect his heartbreak, too, and I know how it feels to be blindsided by a breakup and unable to cope. You’re right—he can’t handle the distance that his ex has put between them so quickly, and he’s using you to try to get to her. That’s not fair to you, because you’re his friend, too, and you have a life and a relationship with this guy that began before those two ever even got together. You need his friendship,

but maybe seeing some eligible bachelorettes in public will remind him of his age, his potential and the fact that he has plenty of time to get it right.

Go grab your buddy and take him to have some fun, whatever “fun” might mean to you two. He needs to remember that life is good regardless of his relationship status.

He’ll come back around.

He’s great! But he smells awful! What do I do?

Tell him so! Ask him to take showers and wear clean clothes when you’re gonna hang.
