Moratorium Mania!

Plus, an Ex-Councilman Dies, and a Commission Candidate Emerges

By Blake Aued and Pete McCommons news@flagpole.com During a contentious four-hour called meeting last week, the Athens-Clarke County Commission approved moratoriums on demolitions and some construction on Milledge Circle and Castalia Avenue in Five Points and in the West Hancock neighborhood.

Both moratoriums apply to demolitions and changes to facades and rooflines for one year while neighborhood residents, county planners and commissioners study ways to protect those neighborhoods’ historic character. But they allow interior renovations and add-ons to the backs of homes, in an effort to appease opponents who are planning improvement projects.

On Milledge Circle, residents are fighting to stop homebuyers from tearing down historic residences to build larger suburbanstyle houses—which they said has happened three times already and could happen again at 398 Milledge Circle.

“You come to realize Athens has been at the center of a demolition derby, so to speak,” Milledge Circle resident and historic preservation professor John Waters said.

“You don’t know what to expect next door to your property, or what it’s going to do to your quality of life.”

Travis Elrod bought 398 Milledge Circle for $667,000 just for the land underneath it, astonishing neighbors who now fear any house on the street could be purchased simply to be demolished.

“We came together as a neighborhood

over this issue,” said Claudio Saunt, who gathered signatures from about 50 of the street’s 87 homeowners asking for the moratorium.

Elrod, speaking publicly for the first time about the controversy, noted that his actions were “completely legal” and decried the “vicious” and “startling” attacks aimed at his family. He said a moratorium and historic designation would cost him financially, while also seeking to assuage neighbors. “I can assure you that whatever we decide to do with the property, it will be respectful,” he said.

Laura Welch told commissioners that she is negotiating with Elrod to buy the house and have it moved to a vacant lot elsewhere in Five Points. “I simply want to communicate that we all care about this house and the neighborhood,” Welch said.

That was a rare moment of civility. The debate broke down earlier this week into an acrimonious and often personal dispute on the Five Points neighborhood listserv, and the animosity carried over to the Tuesdaynight meeting. A lawyer representing Elrod even issued a thinly veiled threat of a lawsuit. “There’s been a lot of bullying going on,” Mike Fitzgerald said. “There’s been a lot of childish behavior. That’s the worst part about this.”

Realtors, homebuilders and contractors have made up the bulk of the opposition, but a few residents stepped forward Tuesday to say that the proposed

Remembering Ed Turner, Athens’ First Black Councilman Former Athens City Councilman Ed Turner died last week at age 73, and he is honored for being the first African American elected to public office in Athens and indeed in all of northeast Georgia. Turner grew up in Athens and graduated from UGA. He was elected to the city council in 1970, back when the Athens and Clarke County governments were still separate.

He was elected in the old First Ward, which was roughly half white and half black in racial composition and had always been represented by white councilmen. His election was accomplished by a lot of hard work in voter registration and door-to-door campaigning by a coalition of black citizens, UGA students and political activists.

Many thought at the time that Athens “wasn’t ready” for a black councilman, and it is probably true that Athens wasn’t ready for Ed Turner. He conducted himself by the principle that he was elected to represent his constituents, and he was an early advocate for Athens’ poorer and less well connected citizens. This stance frequently made him a contrarian on the city council, a role he enjoyed.

Turner was smart and knowledgeable about politics and his community, but he cultivated a demeanor that belied his abilities, frequently causing opponents to underestimate him, sometimes even causing allies to wonder where he was coming from. Underneath his public personality, Turner had a soft laugh and a twinkle in his eye, as if he took pleasure in never letting people take for granted what his response might be on any given issue.

Turner’s commitment to his constituents and his readiness to speak up for them made him a constant presence to be reckoned with on the council, and a vigorous advocate for those whose voices often went unheard in the community’s political discourse. His passing grieves his family and friends and is also a reminder that Ed Turner not only broke a racial barrier, but he also set an example of forceful and uncompromising advocacy, leavened both by humor and his fierce concern for the community he represented. moratorium was not what they had (literally) signed up for. However, changes commissioners made on the floor brought it more in line with the language on the petition.

“Everything you do out from the back of your house—if you want to build a porch, that’s fine,” Commissioner Mike Hamby said.

Mayor Nancy Denson did not want to put the moratorium on the agenda because, she said, she is opposed to moratoriums on principle (although she supported one for downtown earlier this year). So nine commissioners forced it onto the agenda—all but “Demo” Diane Bell, who infamously lifted a 90-day hold she’d placed on a demolition permit for 398 Milledge Circle without consulting her constituents or fellow commissioners.

“Ninety days is long enough for the community to look at the process” for creating a historic district, Denson said—but because of Bell’s action, the community didn’t have 90 days.

Bell was one of three votes against the Milledge Circle moratorium, joining commissioners Sharyn Dickerson and Harry Sims. On Castalia, it passed 9–1, with Bell in opposition.

In the end, everyone got 90 percent of what they wanted. Historic district supporters can continue working toward that goal without fear of more demolitions.

Elrod can do what he wants with the property. The house will (hopefully) be saved.

And residents planning renovations can move forward.

The West Hancock moratorium went far more smoothly. Of about a dozen speakers, everyone supported it, except for representatives of Ebenezer Baptist Church and The Varsity. Ebenezer asked for an exemption for its annex, which church members want to demolish, but commissioners refused on the grounds that it may be historically valuable and restorable.

The Varsity is assembling surrounding properties for what neighbors suspect will be a development encompassing an entire block at the corner of Milledge Avenue and Broad Street. (Say goodbye to those big magnolias.) Among them are several historic houses, including one possibly antebellum home that once belonged to slaves-turned-wealthy-dentists James and Charlotte Mack and educator Annie Burney, former principal of Athens High and Industrial, later Burney-Harris, the city’s black high school pre-integration.

“This is an architecturally significant

house with historic significance because of the people who lived there and what they did for the community,” said Adam Hebbard, president of the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation board of trustees.

Representatives for The Varsity argued that the homes are in poor shape and should be demolished, but restorative architect Scott Reed told commissioners he believes they can be saved and rehabbed.

The traditionally African-American neighborhood has declined, but in recent years young, white families have moved in and started fixing up vacant houses in what is one of the last affordable, walkable intown Athens neighborhoods. And young African Americans are returning, as well.

Donna Thurmond, whose husband grew up on West Hancock, said one of her sons has moved into the neighborhood, and another wants to buy and restore his father’s childhood home. Both white and black speakers said they value the neighborhood’s diversity, and expressed fear that investors and developers could disrupt it.

“We know what’s coming,” West Hancock homeowner (and one-time mayoral candidate) Andy Rusk said. “It’s going to be student apartments, or it’s going to be a strip-mall shopping center.” He drew a chuckle when he alluded to the plot of the original Robocop, in which a greedy corporation wants to exploit Detroit’s problems to build a mega-development for the rich.

John Brown, vice president of The Varsity, denied rumors that the landmark fast-food restaurant is leaving Athens or plans to build on the property anytime soon. “Let me be clear: We have no development plans,” Brown said.

But commissioners said The Varsity forced their hand by blindsiding them when the company applied for demolition permits after promising not to. “We tried to talk to the Gordy family [which owns The Varsity chain] for months, because we didn’t want it to get to this point,” Commissioner Jerry NeSmith said.

The Gordys could still redevelop the portion of the block fronting Milledge and Broad, which is zoned commercial-general.

The moratorium only applies to residential properties. It passed 9–1, with Bell the lone holdout. Since Commissioner Melissa Link’s hold on The Varsity’s demolition permits is still in effect, the Reese Street houses can’t be torn down, unlike 398 Milledge Circle.

What’s ahead? Lots of meetings to decide how the neighborhood can grow while retaining its character. A historic district is unlikely for West Hancock,

Ever since Donald Trump was inaugurated, he has been confronted with a countermovement called “the resistance.” This resistance is comprised of Democrats who oppose Trump’s actions as president. They have conducted mass marches to protest the president’s policies, town halls to push back against attempts to kill Obamacare and energetic campaigns in special elections like Georgia’s 6th Congressional District.

There is one area where the resistance has included not only dissident Democrats, but the highest-ranking Republican in state government, Gov. Nathan Deal. This is ironic indeed when you remember that Deal supported Trump in last fall’s election. But on the issue of criminal justice reform, Deal has refused to go along with Trump and his attorney general, Jeff Sessions.

Sessions has instructed all federal prosecutors to reverse the efforts of the Obama Administration to keep low-level drug offenders out of federal prisons. The feds will now go for the maximum charge possible on every defendant, with the goal being to pack as many people as possible into prison cells. The Sessions approach is a revival of the war on drugs of the 1980s and other lock-them-up programs that bloated prison rolls and caused correctional budgets to skyrocket.

Why is Sessions doing this? Follow the money. Sessions has financial investments in at least two companies that operate private prisons. The more people the Justice Department sends to prison, the more money these private prison companies stand to make—and the more value Sessions’ investments have.

From the very beginning of his administration, Deal has taken a different approach.

In his first inaugural address in 2011, Deal said the state just could not afford to keep

locking up so many drug addicts in prison.

“It is draining our state treasury and depleting our work force,” Deal said.

He appointed a criminal justice reform commission that recommended several changes in the state’s sentencing laws so that non-violent offenders could be diverted to programs that provided an alternative to incarceration. Because of these revisions, the corrections department says that 67 percent of the state’s prison beds are now occupied by the most serious offenders, up from 58 percent in 2009. Georgia now has 139 accountability courts—an alternative to imprisonment— and the number of new participants entering these courts statewide increased by 147 percent in 2016 alone. Felony drug courts had 2,381 active participants, many of whom are struggling with substance abuse and would probably be in a state prison if not for option of this alternative court.

It was once projected that Georgia would have 60,000 people behind bars by now; the number instead is about 52,000.

Even as Sessions was drafting his order for federal prosecutors to resume packing the prisons, Deal was signing the latest round of criminal justice bills passed during this year’s legislative session, including some revisions in the state’s probation system.

Deal is not the only high-ranking official with this point of view. There are more than 30 states, including such red states as Texas and South Carolina, that are also trying to reduce incarceration rates by giving judges more alternatives to mandatory minimums and enacting more alternatives to prison such as drug treatment. On this one issue, Deal and top officials in dozens of other states have made it clear that they are resisting the Trump Administration. f

Trump, Erdogan and Oppression What We Can Learn From Turkey’s Populist Regime

The Committee to Protect Journalists called Turkey “the world’s biggest jailer of journalists.” On the same day that Erdoğan visited the White House, news broke that Trump had asked FBI Director James Comey (before firing him) to jail journalists who publish classified material. Trump has also publicly called journalists the “enemy of the people.”

“We are the people. Who are you?” Erdoğan famously asked his opponents. The appeal to “the people” is the central feature of both Trump’s and Erdoğan’s rhetoric. It is also key to their appeal, allowing them and their followers the ability to purge anyone not deemed a “real American” or an authentic Turk. The populist impulse simultaneously attacks so-called elites and the most vulnerable people, like the Kurds in Turkey.

Jan-Werner Müller’s book What is Populism? argues that populism is defined not only by this anti-elitism but also by anti-pluralism. It is “an exclusionary form of identity politics.” Once in power, populism, according to Müller, is characterized by “attempts to highjack the state apparatus, corruption” and efforts to “systematically repress civil society.”

I messed up on Twitter last week when sending out a story I wrote about Kurds and other activists who were attacked

by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s security forces outside of the Turkish ambassador’s Washington, DC residence.

Instead of typing “Turkish security forces,” I inadvertently wrote “Trump security forces.” I deleted the tweet and regretted the error—but the mistake was telling.

Despite the differences between Trump and Erdoğan, the physical attack on Americans by foreign security personnel should serve as a stark warning to us.

The weatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s starting to hit 90 degrees on a regular basis, and all the bugs that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t die over the winter because it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get cold enough are emerging in scary waves. The best solution to all of this is to eat ice cream, which seems to be making a good effort at a resurgence after a decade of fro-yo dominance.

Out in Lexington, where the still pretty brand-new Oak Tree Plaza shopping center just celebrated its first anniversary, Chill Spot Ice Cream (777 Athens Road, 706-338-8380) is making a go of it as an independent ice cream parlor. Unlike most places named for natural features, which tend to have eliminated the flora or fauna that supplied their monikers, the plaza features a very large oak tree right in its central area

company mostly does catering and doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a regular location. Its pork could be betterâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a little fatty and not very well choppedâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;but the vinegar-based sauce is nice and simple. Both the smoked chickenâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; served by the half, with two slices of bread, for $5â&#x20AC;&#x201D;and the ribs are solid. I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get a chance to try the sausage dogs with peppers and onions or the bags of pork rinds Jokerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s had for sale, but they looked promising.

Decorated in pink, blue and green, it feels like it could be a franchise, but its owner is proud of the fact that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not. She serves Hersheyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ice cream, which is no relation to the much more famous chocolate company, except that they both hail from the same town in Pennsylvania, and says she sampled a lot of kinds and opted for one that would be unique to the area and that you couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get at the grocery store.

At the moment, you can get about a dozen flavors, but any day now sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s installing a new freezer that will hold another dozen, mostly fairly standard offerings, like coffee and peach. You can get it in a sundae or a shake or (maybe your best option) as an ice cream sandwich, either regular or mini-sized, on two fresh Otis Spunkmeyer cookies, baked behind the counter in several varieties.

The ice cream is not world-shaking, but it is good, and it certainly provides a service to a small town. Chill Spot is open noonâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noonâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noonâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;4 p.m.

The plaza, which also includes a Tex-Mex restaurant and an Americanized Chinese restaurant, was having a celebration on the day I showed up, which included a trailer

Rubioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s restaurant is all the better for the addition.

La Michoacana seems to have everything that the original location does, with a freezer jam-packed with at least two dozen kinds of popsicles, a large number of ice cream flavors and the teenager-oriented high-flavor snacks that include Dorilocos.

You can also find its popsicles in a dedicated small freezer at Los Compadres grocery store, at Prince and Satula, but the number of flavors is smaller (chocolate, caramel, strawberry, a few others).

Still, I have yet to find a bad or even underwhelming one. The strawberry tastes like someone is cramming a handful of fresh strawberries into your mouth, with a flavor that evolves the longer you hold on to it. The watermelon, which is water-based rather than milk-based, has occasional chunks of real fruit, plus a thin stripe of green at its base that is, wonder of wonders, rind-flavored, with a faint, salty bitterness that plays beautifully against the sweeter pink top. The guava (water-based) is subtle and studded with tiny nuggets of fruit. The pistachio is so good it will make your knees weak. The paletas are large and less expensive than the ones from King of Pops, and you will want to eat more than one. Do it. I wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t judge you. f

It started with one. I was 17, and my high-school agriculture class did that project where they incubate the eggs and watch ’em hatch. I hear everybody is getting chickens, and I run in there and there’s only one baby left. This guy comes up and he’s like, “That’s my chicken.” I ask, “Oh, do you have chickens? What are you going to do with her?” He says, “I’m gonna throw her out to my dogs. They haven’t killed anything in awhile.” I gave him all the money I had on me at the time, which was $9, and he gave me the chicken.

I didn’t know anything about chickens whatsoever, but I knew I had to get her some friends. In March, I went to the feed store to get two or three, but you had to get a minimum of six, so all of a sudden I had seven! It just kept going from there.

I did not grow up knowing anyone with chickens or knowing anything about them, so I definitely don’t think I would have gotten into them if I hadn’t fallen into them like that. I definitely think it was fate.

You don’t spend as much one-on-one time as you would with a dog, but you spend a lot of time learning about how to care for them. They can get weird diseases, and they aren’t always tame. You usually have to go to an exotic vet. Other cons are if you breed chickens, you’re gonna end up with roosters, and nobody wants roosters. They’re so hard to re-home! If you have neighbors, they definitely won’t like roosters. They start crowing at 5:30 a.m. and stop at sunset. Sometimes, neighbors don’t even like the hens, since they go on a clucking rampage every time they lay an egg. The “egg song” lasts about 20 minutes. It’s terrifying.

However, they are fascinating animals to watch. When I go out in the chicken pen, I forget I’m at my house or in civilization. It feels like you’re witnessing something in nature most people don’t get to see. They’re super, super smart. They’re not cuddly like a cat or dog, but every one of my chickens has its own personality, its own level of understanding. They have relationships. They’re such good mothers. If you can free range your chickens, they help with the garden, eat harmful bugs, and you can use the poop in compost.

There was a storm, one of the worst storms I can remember, and the chickens broke out. They were sitting on top of their pen, soaking wet and trembling, half the size they usually are, with their feathers all slicked down. I had to go out in the pouring rain with a headlamp with a ladder to pull down my chickens and bring them in the house. Chickens panic easily.

How I Met Zippy the Squirrel

Once upon a time, little Zippy fell out of a tree. It was a long way down—her brother fell too, and he landed wrong and died. Zippy bumped her nose but was OK. She was just a baby and wanted her mother. She was cold, and something was biting her—it was a yellow jacket! Zippy was very afraid.

Then the man came and scared the biting thing off of Zippy and picked her up and put her inside his warm coat. He took Zippy home and gave her to the woman who, with the help of Nurse Nongmoo, took Zippy and gave her warm goat milk, and she fell asleep in the woman’s lap.

Lea and Tigger were very curious! In their cat lives, they had never seen a baby squirrel. It even looked sort of like a mouse, and it might be good to eat… hmm.

But right then, the woman saw the way Lea and Tigger were looking at baby Zippy and scolded them and made them ashamed until their tails drooped and they dropped their heads and looked at their paws. Lea was very beautiful, and Tigger was afraid no one loved him, but they both had good hearts and were family.

Nongmoo saw how helpless and scared Zippy was, and did her best to make her feel welcome. Nongmoo had a kind heart and a gift for being able to smell the truth in someone, and really loved cookies.

Old Cocoa was curious too. He used to eat these little things when he was on his own in the woods, but the man and the woman were feeding this little one, so she must be family, and that’s that. Cocoa had a very kind heart and was grateful for small comforts and didn’t have many teeth and always saw the best in everyone he met.

Young Zippy slept and slept, and her little squirrel body began to heal…

Zippy has a nest outside now, and comes to visit several times a day. I wouldn’t say that we own her. She is very independent. My favorite thing is when she climbs on my shoulder to eat a nut and turns so that her tail is against my neck. Did you know that a squirrel’s tail is very warm? It is very pleasant on a cold day! When she was young and much tamer, she would climb inside my coat and come peeking out of my collar. I would take her with me in the truck sometimes. My little friend!

Having a squirrel around has its challenges. They like to chew on things. They have very strong opinions. They don’t like surprises.

Little brown duck and her brother came to us about a year ago. A friend’s son found them orphaned and brought them to us. We brought them up with the other ducks we have. Now they come and go. Sometimes brown duck will bring a friend back with her to hang out in the backyard. It’s nice—I know she’s here because she wants to be. The funniest thing about having a duck around is listening to them run with those crazy duck feet!

Meet Auto, the Creature Comforts Brewery Cat

We found Auto on a very hot July day in a grain bin outside the brewery near our garbage dumpster. It was early in the morning, and our brewer told me there was a kitten in one of the empty grain bins. I looked in, and she was a tiny, dirty little thing that was repeatedly meowing—kind of like a scream. I went and grabbed gloves, and bent down to scoop her out. She hissed at me, but when I picked her up she started purring and was really happy to be saved from the Georgia heat.

After that, it really wasn’t a question. We knew she had found us, and we all pretty much decided that day to keep her, and that she was a Creature. It was the day of the Automatic beer release at the brewery, so we named her Automatic, or Auto for short. The vet told us she was about 8 weeks old when we found her, which would have made her birthday around the same time as our two-year anniversary of being open.

We all collectively take care of her. She stays mostly in the downstairs offices where it’s cool, and she can climb around and lounge on our bottles that are cellaring and preparing for release. She sometimes gets to go upstairs to the brewery area—when she’s up there, she pretty much stays in the warehouse, where we house all of our empty cans. The idea is for her to be a kind of pest control, and she does like to eat cockroaches, but we mainly have just found her to be a sweet companion who brightens our days.

Overall, she provides a boost for company morale, and we enjoy creating a little funny internet personality for her on her Instagram account: @autothebrewerycat. Guests of the brewery like interacting with her as well, and it’s fun to see even staunch anti-cat folks come around to inevitably fall in love with Auto the Brewery Cat.

How to Handle Nine Ducks—and Three Geese

We got our nine ducks mail-ordered from a hatchery when they were one day old. It was cold on the trip, but they all made it! Our three geese are a rare breed that we got from a farmer in Canton.

Both ducks and geese peep when they are little, and gradually switch to quacking/honking. Female ducks quack, but males don’t! They make a hoarse whispering sound. Our ducks are very skittish, but the geese are cuddly and loving. They follow us around, unless they can see the ducks. They like the ducks more than us, and really want to be with them.

Our goslings think they are ducks. We are raising them where they and the ducks can see each other, but we want to keep them separate until the geese are big enough to free-range with the ducks without too much danger from hawks. I try to give the goslings supervised grazing and baths outside the coop, but it’s hard because the ducks will come around when they hear the peeping, and if the goslings see the ducks they try desperately to join them.

Once, Gilligan, our baby gander, made a break for it and escaped to the flock. The ducks fled in terror and he followed right after them, peeping and flapping his little wings until we finally caught him. He couldn’t quite keep up with the ducks, and once he became separated he got anxious and bolted back to his sisters, where I’d put them in the coop. It was the funniest thing ever.

Confessions of a Real-Life Rat Blogger

I will occasionally get texts or calls from strangers saying someone at the pet store or a friend of a friend told them to get in touch with me about surrendering or adopting a rat.

I have a blog I started a few years ago (many-splendored-rat.tumblr.com) that got unexpectedly popular. I’ve got friends all over the country, and believe it or not, I’ve been recognized in stores by people a couple of times. My favorite way to introduce myself is, “I’m big in the rat blogging community,” because it sounds hilarious and never fails to make me laugh.

I really like rats because I’m able to own a lot more of them than I could dogs or cats or something more traditional, so I’m able to get a passion/love for them as a species, as well as individuals. I could go my whole life keeping dogs or cats and probably only get to know 15 or 20 over the course of my life, but I’ve owned rats for seven years and have had over 150 of them. I get to meet the nice ones, the mean ones, the boring ones and the friendly ones. I love, love, love my dogs, but I’d never say that owning three dogs could give me an allencompassing view of what owning dogs is like, whereas I can definitely say I could give someone a pretty accurate view of rat ownership, just because I have so much experience with such a wide variety.

People often make demeaning comments about their tails, which is saddening, because their tails are one of my favorite things about rats. They are mostly prehensile— they can’t use them to pick stuff up like monkeys can, but if they’re leaning out of the cage to get treats, or balancing on a person’s arm, they’ll wrap their tails around the cage bars or your arm to keep them from falling. I also repeatedly get asked if they all have names, which is kind of weird to me. Yes, everybody’s had a name; yes, I remember them all; yes, I can tell them apart, even when they’re the same color.

Our Dogs Ate a Bag of Weed

Priscilla Lewis: I used to walk our three dogs around the neighborhood, and I would pick up trash, because “beautifying your neighborhood is a great thing to do.” So, I got to this traffic circle and there was a bag in it… and it was clearly a bag of weed. I couldn’t decide if it was a sting operation or not, but I put the weed in my pocket along with all the trash, because I didn’t want a child to find it. I took it home, woke up Ryan and was like, “Oh my god, look what I found.” And he said, “Put it on the table.” Then we went out and ran errands. When we came back, our huge dog and our littlest chihuahua had eaten all of the weed.

Ryan Lewis: The bag was torn up across the floor.

PL: Our middle dog was looking at them, totally narcing on them.

The big dog just seemed calm, so we knew something was wrong.

RL: Usually she was hyper, but she was just chillin’ on the couch.

PL: The little dog, Mr. President, was clearly having the worst experience of his life. His little eyes were bugged out of his head.

RL: He couldn’t bend his legs; they were sticking straight out.

PL: We took him to the vet, where I was so embarrassed, because I thought they were gonna call doggie DFCS on me… It doesn’t sound real that I found this huge bag of weed, but I swear I did! So, the vet was like, “Here’s the deal. You’re just going to have to ride it out with him and make sure he drinks water.”

RL: You know, the same thing you’d do with a person who wasn’t having a good time with it.

PL: Ryan sat up with him.

RL: Went home, sat down, watched a movie on a couch. He was freaked out, shaking, but I just held him and he calmed down over time.

Three Athens Animal Doctors on What Their Job is Really Like

Animal Wellness Center of Athens Flagpole: What’s a typical day like for you?

Angela Dodd: There’s not a typical day, and that’s kind of one of the things I enjoy about what I do. No day is exactly the same as the last.

FP: What is the most interesting pet you’ve ever treated?

AD: I feel like something interesting happens every day. I once treated a very large turkey [that] stood about 3 feet tall—a pet turkey. I treated a raccoon with a green-bean can stuck on its head. He was found by people walking in the woods… We had to sedate him to take it off. As a technician, I used to see snakes. Sometimes I was told they were going to be in the room and sometimes I wasn’t, as just a fun little something. “Get a temperature on Rocko.” And then I was like, “He’s room temperature.” You see all kinds of crazy things.

FP: What’s the biggest misconception about veterinary care?

AD: When people bring their aging pets in to see us, and we have to begin the process of coming up with ways to make them comfortable and address end-of-life decisions, invariably at some point the comment is made, “I don’t see how you can do this job, it’s so sad.” True, facing the loss of an important part of the family is awful, (l to r) Dr. Lisa Stacy and Dr. Angela Dodd and we feel that sadness to the very core of our being, but we also are able to have a glimpse at one of the most pure, unconditional examples of love that exists: the bond of love between an animal and their person(s).

FP: What advice would you give someone considering a career as a veterinarian?

AD: Best advice I ever got was, “Make sure you follow your passion—try to make a living doing something you never get tired of doing.” I watched my parents complain for my whole life about how much they hated their jobs, and I was determined that I would choose something I loved.

FP: What should people do if their pet has eaten drugs or other toxins?

AD: Always, the best advice is to seek professional veterinary help immediately. There are times when it is appropriate to induce vomiting, if an animal eats something they shouldn’t, and there are other times when the item could cause just as much harm coming back up as it did going in… Call your local veterinarian [or] emergency center if after-hours, or the ASPCA has an animal poison-control hotline to call—888-426-4435—and they should be able to advise.

Dr. Mel Cown

Athens Animal Hospital Flagpole: What’s a typical day like for you?

Mel Cown: The day starts at 8:45 with a clinic walk-through, and checking on the boarding pets in the kennel. I see appointments from 9 a.m.–noon. From noon–3 p.m., I perform any scheduled surgeries, then appointments again from 3–5:30 p.m.

FP: What is the most interesting pet you’ve ever treated?

MC: The most interesting animal I’ve treated wasn’t a pet per se, but rather an otter that we were rehabilitating for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. He was so naturally inquisitive, congenial and, of course, adorable.

FP: What’s the biggest misconception about veterinary care?

MC: I think our profession has taken a public relations hit over the last few years. Every veterinarian I know will put service and their patients’ welfare above their bank account

balance. That being said, most of us are small business owners with taxes to pay, families to support (and spend time with) and payroll to meet.

FP: What advice would you give to someone considering a career as a veterinarian?

MC: If you want a career that is very rewarding, but requires lifelong learning, long days and a few sleepless nights, and if you can’t imagine yourself doing anything else—go for it!

It helps to have empathy and a good rapport with people, as well as a great bedside manner with your patients, because it is the owners that are emotionally invested [in] and financially responsible for their pets.

Dr. Jenifer Hope

Hope Animal Medical Center Flagpole: What’s a typical day like for you?

Jenifer Hope: We arrive ready to see any pets that have come in from being at an emergency hospital and may still be in critical condition. There may be pets that are already there who are very sick. I also look at the surgery patients and see if any laboratory testing is needed before the procedure. Then the other vets and I start dividing up any cases and patient appointments. We hope to complete the surgeries before lunch, so the patients can recover and head home the same day. Meanwhile, there are appointments for vaccinations and for sick pets throughout the day. There is usually an emergency or a sick patient needing to be seen on short notice, and that appointment is worked into the schedule.

FP: What is the most interesting pet you’ve ever treated?

JH: There have been some very unusual animals I have treated or done surgery on: lemur, skunk, chicken, ostrich—one weighed over 200 pounds—a Caribbean boa constrictor that weighed over 35 pounds, camels, chameleon, ferrets and rats.

FP: What’s the biggest misconception about veterinary care?

JH: You have to be a very good communicator in the veterinary field. We have to be able to obtain a good history to help diagnose the problem, and we have to convince owners to treat their pet. You also have to be able Dr. Jenifer Hope to feel empathy and express it to the owner. We choose this profession because we love animals and want to make life better for them and their owners.

Which leads me into the second misconception: We do this for love, not for money.

Overall, the pay is much lower than for the human side of medicine. I think people should know we have to earn a four-year college degree and then attend veterinary medical school for an additional four years. It is a costly eight years, and many have significant school loans to pay after graduation. It is not glamorous, but it is worth it. I wouldn’t choose any other career, and I did not choose this one to become rich. That is probably why I am very happy.

FP: What advice would you give to someone considering a career as a veterinarian?

JH: There are many career paths in our field. You can be like James Herriot and practice on all types of animals and perform surgery. There are also jobs in teaching, research, CDC, public health and government, including the U.S. Army. You can perform your job in any location with appropriate training and license. I have had the opportunity to help in Haiti, Africa and in Afghanistan, much like the Peace Corps, by helping the local population improve their livestock care and production. You can work on any animal, including fish and water mammals.

Also, if one does not want to go to school for eight years, there are veterinary technicians who are able to assist and get hands-on jobs with the animals, much like the nurses.

There are veterinary staff who concentrate in areas such as surgery, dentistry, zoo animals, sea animals, farm animals, etc. There are so many areas and so many opportunities in our field. f

Julian Koster Brings ‘The Orbiting Human Circus’ to Town

espite all the flak millennials catch for supposedly having short attention spans, this generation increasingly consumes information and entertainment in a committed, focused way. Podcasts have risen to the forefront of culture, offering immersive listening experiences on topics such as true crime, history, sports and comedy. From “This American Life” and “Fresh Air” to heavy hitters “Serial,” “S-Town” and “Stuff You Should Know,” this nowestablished platform enriches minds and commutes alike.

For Elephant 6 mainstay Julian Koster, the podcast boom couldn’t have come at a more convenient time.

Koster had been planning a series of projects for The Music Tapes, his group with Robbie Cucchiaro and Thomas Hughes, that revolved around the exploits of a fictional janitor of the Eiffel Tower. There was one big barrier in the way, though: He wasn’t quite sure if there was a format capable of fully conveying his stories.

For one, Koster loves performance; anyone who’s witnessed a Music Tapes production can attest to this. For those who haven’t, imagine a troupe traveling with a circus tent filled with carnival games—which they did for their Traveling Imaginary tour in 2012—and you’ll start to get the picture. Similarly, Koster is fascinated with storytelling and recording, having made narrative records for years, in addition to contributing to a number of iconic albums from Athens and beyond.

However, those mediums alone couldn’t do Koster’s narrative justice. He needed some sort of storytelling format that people

could get involved with—that could allow his magical fiction to unfold over time, but also keep listeners enthralled with every installment. Frankly, he needed a podcast.

cast culture exploded the way that it did,” Koster says. “Really, we sort of thought there just wasn’t an audience for it, or a way to even make sense for us just to put it out as a record. So the thing that happened in podcast culture was so awesome, because suddenly there was a place for something like that to go… and an audience just waiting for it. It was kind of this really magical moment.”

So Koster created “The Orbiting Human Circus (of the Air)” in collaboration with Night Vale Presents, the network responsible for popular fictional narrative podcast

podcast ended up breaking into the iTunes top 10, and has been given the green light for a second season.

In “The Orbiting Human Circus,” the janitor, played by Koster, confronts surreal events and assorted characters night after night as he cleans the Eiffel Tower, inhabiting a world devoid of any discernible era. Its events could be taking place during any time period, past, present or future.

Fittingly, its companion EP, which contains music featured in the podcast’s first season, was recorded on a multitude of apparatuses: a 1930s wire recorder, a 1940s Presto

record lathe, a 1960s tape machine and a modern computer.

“That stuff is my passion. I love those machines,” Koster says of the equipment, recalling his purchase of the wire recorder while on tour in Montreal in the ’90s. “I took it home, and it was the most magical-sounding thing ever. It plays back at you, and it literally sounds like it’s 70 years old.”

This confluence of recording practices and sounds and playful experimentation with time heightens Koster’s charming innocence. “I feel like a superhero or something,” he says.

“I feel like it’s my cape. I feel like I have this secret power to make things in the past.”

As Koster and company tour in support of the podcast, they seek to bring the same immersion and involvement required of podcast listeners to the venues they play.

Interspersed with Music Tapes songs, the set revolves around Koster’s janitor, who is tasked with cleaning up each concert hall. He says each venue will appear nearly unrecognizable to the public. “You’re going to go into the 40 Watt,” he explains, “and it’s not going to look like the 40 Watt.”

There will be some instant gratification, too. “It’s kind of like you’re walking into a whole story, and there’s all kinds of fun and impossible events that happen—and it happens all over the 40 Watt,” says Koster. f

with engineer Joel Hatstat. Taking inspiration from sessions he observed, he set out to compose and perform a set of songs himself, adding only a bass player, Ben Crawford. The result is Gorhamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new pop-oriented EP, Retrovisor. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s four tracks long and, I dunno, I guess itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fine as a demo. I know it was a ton of work to separately track and play these, which is applauded, but theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not terribly complete, compositionally speaking. I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make much of the lyrics, and the politically oriented â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Fuck Do I Say?â&#x20AC;? is so confusing in its direction I just tuned out. The best track by far is opener â&#x20AC;&#x153;Catch & Release,â&#x20AC;? and the best part of that is the piano. The song is markedly different from the deep mood-setting songs weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard from Blue Blood in the past, emphasizing a modern-day chooglinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; rhythm thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s way less CCR and way more J. FIVE FOR FIGHTING: Athens rapper Caulfield released a new EP a couple of weeks ago named Under the Influence. The five tracks feature a few solid, highly selective guest verses from notables like Dictator, Squalle, Trvy and Son Zoo. It took me a couple of times through to grab the groove of this EP, but once I was in it all clicked. While Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not crazy about the trap beat of the title track, things coalesce nicely on the tuneful, midtempo â&#x20AC;&#x153;They Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Know,â&#x20AC;? which features the above-mentioned Dictator and Squalle. GET UP, SIT BACK DOWN: Donald Whitehead (Future Ape Tapes) tore his Achilles tendon playing basketball back in April. Even hearing about this made me wince with sympathy pains, so I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t imagine how painful it was for him. At any rate, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s used his time during recovery to make a new full-length record. Released as his solo project Space Brother, the album is named Achilles Heal (get it?) and is 10 tracks long. It was easy for me to assume that, due to the nature of the recording and the incident that led to it, this work would be fairly meditative. Well, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what I get for assuming. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s full of bouncy beats (check the almost-squelch of opening track â&#x20AC;&#x153;Voyagerâ&#x20AC;?) and slower-tempo plays on dark-psych EBM (electronic body music), and in many ways itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a nice counterpoint to the not entirely post-hip-hop, but definitely wide-open experimentalism of the Apes. Flicker will host an art reception on Friday, May 26 from 6–9 p.m., featuring individual tarot readings by Desiree Sharpe. Music will kick off around 7:30 p.m., with performances by Trees Biien (Ash Rickli), Caleb Darnell of The Darnell Boys, Brandon Hanick of Future Lives, Fart Jar, Reap and Multiple Miggs. In addition to picking up a skateboard, you can reserve originals, prints and pre-ordered decks from the Paradox Tarot.

Over the past few months, the owners have made major strides towards completing the three-story building’s renovations. All the while, Greer has been steadily designing a new mural for the facade where the large futuristic letters of “Money Machine” once hovered above the entrance to the beloved Secret Squirrel.

Greer’s mural is fantastical and dreamlike, depicting two big-eyed, cloaked characters amidst a swirling design.

Details like an old-fashioned keyhole, crescent moon through a floating window and fluffy yet big-clawed critter add to the mystery.

“I would like anyone looking at it to form their own story, but essentially it is a non-religious variation on the ‘Ark’ narrative,” says Greer. “Two otherworldly beings are moving through the universe with the remnants of civilization in tow, searching for a new place to call home. They carry with them all of the things they could grab that they hold dear.”

Though translating a small drawing into a massive wall painting has been one of Greer’s most physically and mentally demanding artistic challenges so far, he manages to create incredible shading and depth through his trusted palette of black and white.

The first chance to see the space’s completed transformation will be at the opening reception for Trio’s inaugural group exhibition, “Nasty Women Athens,” on Friday, June 30. Co-curated by Tatiana Veneruso and Melissa Lee, the show is part of a worldwide series demonstrating solidarity in the face of policies that encroach on women’s rights and reproductive health. Submissions of all media are welcome from anyone who identifies with the ideologies of Nasty Women, and images of work should be sent to trioathens@ gmail.com by Saturday, May 27. Art sales will support the Feminist Women’s Health Center in Atlanta.

“Nasty Women Athens” will remain on view through Aug. 20, and will be followed by “Color Theory,” a group exhibition presenting artists who focus on color as the central element within their work. Proposals will be accepted through July 31, and the show will run Sept. 1–Oct. 15. f

The Alien Series Is Back on Track Plus, Three Other New Flicks

A mousy Gere stars as the titular protagonist, whose profession seems to revolve around helping people meet other people for whatever profit he can generate, be it monetary or a simple new connection. In Israeli politician Micha Eshel (Lior Ashkenazi), Norman thinks he has hit the jackpot, especially when his pal becomes the prime minister. But Norman finds out that making the connection is easier than using it. Writer-director Joseph Cedar and his star have produced a character—and ultimately, a film—both unexpected and truly special.

EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING (PG-13) This latest adaptation of a YA romance is essentially a surprisingly likable new version of the John Travolta TV movie from the 1970s, The Boy in the Plastic Bubble. A teenager in exile falls in love and risks her life for that love.

The sick teen in love is Maddy Whittier (the lovely Amandla Stenberg, better known as Rue from The Hunger Games). Her rare case of SCID (severe combined immunodeficiency) means she gets to live in a cool house full of windows and an airlock. Then she meets the cute, moody boy next door, Olly (Nick Robinson, The Boys of Summer), and the bubble of her perfect existence bursts.

The two young leads are incredibly charming, which helps alleviate some of the bumpy plot-holes once they abscond to Hawaii. A credit card is too simple of an explanation for how these high schoolers acquire plane tickets, rental cars and hotel rooms. Directed by Stella Meghie with the impeccable taste and well-appointed style of Nancy Myers, were she in charge of a spread for Hermetically Sealed Living, Everything, Everything comes off a lot better over an hour and a half than it did in a twominute trailer.

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THE LONG HAUL (PG) Sadly, the fourth Wimpy Kid movie falls way short of its predecessors, and is the worst movie I have seen in a theater in 2017. Part of the problem is that the charming original cast, most of whose growth has outpaced that of their literary inspiration, has been unnecessarily replaced by direct-to-video lookalikes. The book gives the characters few distinguishing characteristics, so the new cast, including Alicia Silverstone and Tom Everett Scott as replacements for Rachael Harris and Steve Zahn’s parental units, could have looked like anyone.

But the latest adventure of Greg Heffley (Jason Drucker) has way more wrong with it than its admittedly game cast.

Unfortunately, author Jeff Kinney’s first screenplay credit is for this cynical, nasty movie with an ugly streak of superiority.

The toilet humor is turned up to 11; we get vomit and poop gags, all from an overweight schlub dubbed Beardo (Christopher A. Coppola) by Greg. Plus, the movie does not have enough Rowley in it. Even if replacement Rowley Owen Asztalos is no Robert Capron, Greg’s bestie remains the series’ most pleasant character, but he gets left at home on this trip. Calling The Long Haul sitcom-ish is an insult to even the worst sitcoms. f

The person who wrote in originally didn’t specify a university—there are a few around here, not just our gigantic local one—but, dear writer, if you are a UGA student, I strongly recommend you go check out Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) at the University Health Center. They offer crisis intervention, one-on-one counseling services, addiction and recovery counseling and dedicated women’s and men’s health services, and they can even help you quit smoking.
