Athens Keeps Demolishing Its Past Plus, Day of Jubilee, Campus Carry and More Local News

A draft was finished in March, laying out possibilities like a Brooklyn Creek greenway and redeveloping public housing. But it said little about the corridor north of Broad, and nothing about gentrification—the issue that spurred the study in the first place.

Five Points is gentrifying, too, in its own way, if you can call going from uppermiddle-class to absurdly affluent “gentrification.� People are paying two-thirds of a million dollars and tearing down perfectly good houses to build their North Oconee dream home. This kind of thing has been going on in Five Points for years, but for a decade or more a historic district has just been talk. Even passing an infill housing ordinance that addresses out-of-scale development took years, and it says nothing about teardowns.

Back on Reese Street, Commissioner Jerry NeSmith said his goal is to save the historic (and affordable) housing in that neighborhood. Ideally, that would be through a zoning overlay—which would allow commercial development in appropriately zoned locations—rather than a historic district, he said. “We will find a way to limit demolitions of this housing stock, which is working-class housing,� he said.

The four dwellings on Reese Street are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as in the ACC Comprehensive Plan as a possible future local-historic district. One was built by former slaves who became dentists and later was the home of A.H. Burney, a prominent educator and the namesake of Burney-Harris High School—the city’s black high school before integration—and Burney-Harris-Lyons Middle School.

Athens-Clarke County Commissioner Melissa Link said after the owners of The Varsity applied for permits to demolish seven nearby structures, potentially allowing them to raze several historic houses to make way for a mega-development.

The same could be said for the looming Milledge Circle demolition that has sparked a scramble to create a historic district in Five Points, or any number of crises over the years. Athens once again finds itself behind the eight-ball.

The Varsity has been quietly buying up surrounding properties since last year, leading to speculation that it would redevelop the block surrounded by Milledge Avenue and West Broad, Chase and Reese streets into a mixed-use development with apartments and a grocery store. Parcels along Broad are zoned for dense commercial use, while those on Reese are zoned for lowdensity multifamily units.

The Gordy family wants to demolish the Dairy Queen that shuttered last year, along with the tire shop next door and four houses on West Broad and Reese streets.

Link, who represents the area, said she has already exercised her power under county law to put a hold on those permits for 90 days. “I have activated the 90-day delay, and I have every intention of seeking a longterm moratorium,� she said.

Long-term planning for the neighborhood is underway, of course. (Athens is very good at planning; it’s acting on those plans that gives us trouble.) Officials with the ACC government, Clarke County School District, Athens Housing Authority and the Athens Land Trust, as well as residents, have sensed development pressure coming to the Hancock Corridor for years. They partnered to hire a consultant to produce a “feasibility study� on improvements and

Broad and Milledge. And one might question whether a drive-through with an infinity parking lot is the highest and best use of that valuable land. Just like the zoning changes that led to the luxury student high-rises downtown, though, the decision to zone that residential neighborhood multifamily could have unintended consequences. People are moving here, and they need somewhere to live, which means the city core will get denser, which will bring new business and make it easier to provide services like better transit that many residents want. But at what cost? It’s a question this community has yet to fully grapple with. [Blake Aued]

Episcopal Dorm Withdrawn Strong opposition from the University of Georgia, as well as concerns about traffic and safety, prompted ACC commissioners to ask the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta to withdraw plans for a 104-bed dormitory on the site of its South Lumpkin Street chapel last week.

Police Chief Jimmy Williamson made a rare appearance—administrators have kept him out of the public eye the past few years—to tell the commission that he’s worried that a median to prevent cars from turning left into or out of the development will lead to an increase in crashes and endanger pedestrians. “I’ve never felt concerns that were significant enough for me to address the Mayor and Commission until now,� Williamson said.

Those are concerns the university could have addressed by allowing the diocese to use UGA-owned University Court to access the development, but it has refused, leading to speculation that UGA is blocking the development because it has its eye on the property. UGA Director of Community Relations Allison Bracewell McCullick told commissioners, unprompted, that the university has not made an offer on, nor been offered, the property (which is different from saying the university has no interest in it). She also said the proposed five-story development would be out of scale with surrounding buildings (including Bolton Dining Hall and Oglethorpe House, which is four stories taller).

Jim Warnes, the lawyer for the diocese, noted that the property is surrounded by dorms, the location provides easy access to dining, class and downtown on foot and by bus, will keep students out of neighborhoods and will put the property back on the tax rolls because, even though it’s owned by a church, it would be income-generating and thus taxable. He and diocese officials said they were blindsided by UGA’s opposition. “The church never intended to get crosswise with the University of Georgia, and we’re a little blindsided by this,�

Commissioner Diane Bell, whose district includes the property, recommended sending it back to the planning commission.

But by law it would have to come back to the county commission within 40 days, and voting down the plan would mean it couldn’t return for a year. After several commissioners urged the diocese to withdraw the plans and work with UGA to iron out their differences, Warnes agreed. [BA]

May 4 Is More Than Just Star Wars Day There’s a new holiday in Athens, but it’s one that’s been around for 152 years.

That day is May 4, the day in 1865 when the Union army arrived and freed the slaves in town and the surrounding countryside, who then gathered with their loved ones at the town hall, hoisting a flag up what they then deemed the “flagpole of liberty.�

While many marches that take place downtown are in protest, Thursday’s vigil and rally marking the “day of jubilee� was one of celebration and honoring ancestors.

June 19, or Juneteenth, as it’s commonly called, is celebrated widely by the African-American community as the day in 1865 that slavery came to an end—when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, TX and began enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation, signed two years earlier.

In spite of ongoing opposition in Athens, as well as from campus police and college administrators across the state, Gov. Nathan Deal has signed HB 280, this year’s version of the “campus carry� legislation he vetoed last year. Starting July 1, concealedcarry permit holders will be allowed to bring guns onto some parts of campus.

The bill’s authors added additional exceptions Deal suggested last year. Like last year’s bill, HB 859, HB 280 carves out exceptions for fraternity and sorority houses, dorms and athletic events. Other exceptions added to HB 280 include daycares, classrooms where dual-enrollment high-school students are attending class, faculty offices and rooms where disciplinary hearings are conducted.

However, if you are shot on campus, your health insurance may or may not cover it—if you still have any. Athens Rep. Jody Hice, along with other House Republicans, helped the latest version of Trumpcare across the finish line last week. Hice claims the bill will lower premiums, improve care, increase choice and protect people with pre-existing conditions.

Campus Carry, a Kid Journalist and The Old Black Dog Bookstore

While this report also focuses on other risks associated with increasing gun availability on campus, it fails to mention the psychological impact these guns might have. Fear disrupts learning. It also disrupts teaching. School should serve as a refuge—a place where ideas come under attack, and the only defense you need comes in the form of logic and reason, not armor or firearms.

People say the campus carry bill is largely symbolic, that it doesn’t essentially change anything. But the symbol of a gun destroys the sanctity of a classroom.

A gun is a tool of annihilation. It not only has the power to destroy bodies; it can silence ideas. What is a college campus if it is not a birthplace of ideas? [Ramsey Nix]

Clementine Gerow, a first grader, hung out with us for a while and learned about selling ads from Advertising Director and Publisher Alicia Nickles. Production Director Larry Tenner showed Clementine how he composes the paper with his computer, and she got a good look at the inside of a newspaper office and the many different tasks that go into preparing the publication.

Big Businesses Screw the Small Ones A lot of my friends are small business owners who are conservative. They see the amount of regulation imposed on them and the hoops they have to jump through to stay in business, and they blame it on the general concept of “government.”

Let me ask you a question: Who do you think writes the policy that makes it harder for you to compete? It’s the major players in your industry. They buy off your representatives in government and rig the market against you. You’re playing a game you can’t win, and they’ll lie to you about the source of your misery so you keep participating.

Do you not believe that the little person gets screwed? Who do you think’s doing the screwing?

I saw it happen with farming in the early ’90s. When I was a kid, there were hundreds of pork producers in Brooks County—small family operations. Then, because of Clintonian deregulation, the big pork companies like Sunnyland and Smithfield came into South Georgia, bought up the independent packing houses that determined the price per pound of a hog and Walmarted all those people out of business by artificially decreasing demand until the price per pound got down to like 11 cents, and it was costing more to finish them out than you made at sale.

People lost their livelihoods and the only source of sustenance they had ever known.

Mass cultural displacement. Filing for bankruptcy broke the spirits of a lot of good people. Stole their pride. Some committed suicide out of desperation and shame.

You either had to go to work for the people that put you out of business or find other means of survival. It was the rise of corporate farms and vertical integration of the supply chain. They just decided they’d

become hog farmers and cut small operations out. I saw it happen, and it makes me sad that people just shrugged and said, “Oh well, I guess that’s just how it is.”

A population trained to act on faith instead of asking questions makes people an easy target for manipulation. I’m asking people to think critically about the source of the problem. This country isn’t broke.

We’re the richest country on earth. We have allowed wealth hoarders to cripple society and blame their most negatively affected victims.

They’ll tell you that you can’t get ahead because of the poor person that lives on the bad side of town, but I’m here to tell you that they who hold the purse strings have the power. Don’t let huge corporations lump themselves in with small business.

They’re not. That distinction is never made.

Don’t let them speak for you. They don’t have your best interests at heart.

Will Trump Take Us to War? I was having a Jittery Joe’s coffee with a couple of women friends this morning, and we were despairing over Trump’s outof-nowhere accusation that Obama had wire-tapped him. Of course, the only thing missing is the proof. But these days who needs proof or truth? We all agreed that No. 45 is looking for something that will make him a hero fast. Then I read this headline for an article by William D. Hartung in The Nation this afternoon: “Trump’s Obsession With Generals Could Send Us Straight Into War With Iran: The president’s foreign policy picks have set the stage for an aggressive military-first administration.” Sadly, this may be his idea of a path to heroism. Let it not be so.

Today, women’s role in brewing is changing again. Roth thinks there are women in the craft beer scene who are making great strides. “I could point out many women in the industry doing incredible things and changing the industry in really incredible ways,” says Roth, “but you don’t see it as much in the South.”

Jess Hurd is the exception. The only female brewer in Athens began working at Terrapin Beer Co. nine months ago, where she handles everything from milling grain to adding hops and other ingredients to boiling wort to cleaning tanks.

When you think about craft beer—about the hands that mix together grains, water, yeast and hops coaxing out the subtle flavors of a pale ale or a stout—whose hands are you imagining? Chances are you’re thinking about a guy with a beard.

The beer industry has historically been dominated by men, and the craft beer industry is no different. But women are increasingly taking on a larger part of the craft brewing industry. According to a recent poll conducted by Auburn University, women account for 29 percent of brewery workers in the United States.

Comforts’ tasting room, as well as brewmaster Adam Beauchamp’s wife. Brian Roth, the head brewmaster at Southern Brewing Company, also recognizes women’s growing interest in the industry and is showing support.

Roth co-owns the brewery with his buddy Rick Goddard, but his wife Jen Roth is also involved. In the early stages of SBC, Roth helped her husband with anything from mopping the floors to running the register to budgeting for the brewery. Today you can find her working behind the scenes to make sure everything runs smoothly.

“We wouldn’t be open if it wasn’t for five women—Jen included,” Roth says.

Yet women are still underrepresented as head brewers. In 2014, Stanford University surveyed 1,700 active breweries and found that only 4 percent of them had a female head brewer.

In the early days of beer, women were uniquely tasked with brewing and serving beer to their families and communities.

Over 4,000 years ago in ancient Egypt, women were the first beer merchants.

When North America was first colonized in the late 1400s, as with other domestic roles related to cooking, beer was a woman’s domain.

Shortly after she began working at Terrapin, Hurd visited a local bar and asked the server to suggest a beer. “She recommended a Terrapin beer,” Hurd says. “It was the coolest thing to experience! Like, ‘Oh! I could have made that.’ That sort of feeling can be kind of addicting.” f

LeeAnn Peppers Reflects on Her New Album, Track by Track

A

fter a few years spent wowing unsuspecting audiences at innocuous folk showcases and amateur-laden open-mic nights, LeeAnn Peppers has developed a reputation as one of Athens’ most thoughtful young songwriters. Her debut CD, What Isn’t Said, is out now. A strikingly confessional, aggressively unadorned document, it’s one of 2017’s most noteworthy local recordings so far.

Flagpole recently spoke with Peppers about the EP, breaking it down track by track.

1. “Father of Mine” Flagpole: What Isn’t Said has an intensely personal quality. How much of the album is autobiographical?

LeeAnn Peppers: All of it. Every song is about someone I know or once knew.

2. “What Isn’t Said” FP: I dig the upright bass. Whom did you collaborate with on the album? What was the recording process?

LAP: The bass is brought to you by Seth Barham. [It’s] also on “Father of Mine,” “Something Greater,” “Floating” and “My Mother’s Song,” and [he plays] glockenspiel on “Something Greater” and “Floating.”

The vocal harmony on “Floating” is Seth as well. He actually slightly re-arranged “What Isn’t Said” after we started playing together.

Ethan Mullenax came in to play piano on “My Mother’s Song.” He also spent a lot of time tracking, mixing and mastering the album.

The process was different when Lucas McAuliffe and I first began recording: two mics, a laptop and a guitar. He would press record, and I would play two or three songs and hit stop when I was done. He wanted to capture the songs as they sounded when I wrote them: alone, in my bedroom.

Though we added two more people, four more instruments and an extra song, we continued recording in the same room in a house on the corner of Chase and Nantahala. We would still set up, press record, and Lucas and Ethan would leave the room. Seth and I would play a couple takes of a song, or play one song right after the other, tracking my vocals, guitar and the bass all together.

The original intent carried over—we wanted the sparse atmosphere, leaving space for the listener in the room with us.

3. “Something Greater” FP: You pair these devastating lyrics with simple, innocent melodies. Is that juxtaposition intentional?

LAP: No—not exactly, anyway. For the most part, I really hadn’t written songs before these. Poems, but not songs. So when I sat down to write, I had words in mind—maybe a phrase or stanza—and I would pluck around until something felt right and the number of beats in the line fit. I had very little experience with sonic expression. I just needed to play something well enough to support what I needed to say.

4. “All I Need” FP: Lovely use of negative space. Who are your songwriting heroes?

LAP: Oh man, so many, but Sam Beam, Justin Vernon, Conor Oberst and Sufjan Stevens. They hit me on such a personal level. I remember hearing their lyrics thinking, “I need to learn this language so I can communicate the stuff I’m struggling to make sense of.” After moving back to Athens, Patrick Morales became a songwriting hero, and Phil Elverum recently struck me with A Crow Looked at Me.

5. “Floating” FP: I am taken with the phrase “gently haunted by the past.” What’s the origin of that lyric?

LAP: I know there are people out there who are capable of making decisions and moving on, but for me that’s not the case. I unfortunately have the great talent of seeing all sides of a situation, often to my detriment.

I get stuck a lot. So that’s the basic blood of that line—having the ripple of your past greet you further down the road.

6. “The Choice to Stay” FP: Maybe my favorite tune on the record.

There’s a lot here about personal evolution— shedding old identities, learning from mistakes.

LAP: It’s funny this is a top one for you, because it became a surprise favorite of mine after listening back to the first master. Some time had gone by, and I heard it almost as though for the first time. The first line is a reference to Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. This is from Wikipedia, because I don’t have the book with me right now, but it goes something like: “‘I could tell you my adventures—beginning from this morning,’ said Alice a little

timidly, ‘but it’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.’ “‘Explain all that,’ said the Mock Turtle. “‘No, no! The adventures first,’ said the Gryphon in an impatient tone.

7. “My Mother’s Song” FP: I won’t ruin the surprise, but the CD-only release makes more sense after listening all the way through. Why did you choose to avoid a digital release?

LAP: We’ve encountered this amazing phenomenon with technological advancements, which have brought people who are physically distant close to one another. We have access to places and things we otherwise wouldn’t in our immediate context.

There is constant, limitless access to almost anything we could ever want, and probably more than we will ever need. The reality, however, is things break, people move in and out of our lives, and we carry on.

I’ve heard some loving arguments for releasing it digitally on a platform like Bandcamp, but I always come back to the idea that sort of fueled this decision for me, which [is from T.S. Eliot]: “What we know of other people is only our memory of the moments during which we knew them. And they have changed since then… at every meeting, we are meeting a stranger.” f

“I try to just focus on the music, but I’m also not ashamed of my sexuality,� she says. “I never felt the need to keep it quiet, but when I was 25 that’s what I might have done. That’s a major reason I feel lucky this career didn’t happen for me until later.

That’s the thing I would’ve tried to keep a secret, and I probably would have ruined myself over.�

The lack of press, peer or fan backlash against Clark proves today’s country audience is more open-minded than some might expect, seven years removed from Chely Wright’s headline-making decision to come out of the closet. “People like Chely Wright had to come before me,�

Clark says. “The pressures she was under were different than the pressures I am under. She’s somebody who was kind of a sex symbol in country music. I’m not.

Things had to go the way they went for her for it to be easier for me, as sad as that is. And the person after me, it’ll be easier for them.�

Wes deftly mixes the personal and the conscious, which, I suppose, are two sides of the same coin. Specifically, “Turn me up/The Predicament” and “Fools Gold” are gems. 40 years of rock and roll, from Badfinger to Bad Brains. On this LP, the band compacts its diversity into a dozen songs. As such, there’s an aesthetic here that’s more than musical. Honestly, for comparison’s sake, the Minutemen—whom The Hernies sound nothing like—were able to pull this off, too.

BLOW UP: Concert photographer and songwriter Chris McKay, who’s had hundreds of photos published in these very pages, was selected for inclusion in a cool upcoming project. The Smithsonian Institution sent out a call for submissions for its book Smithsonian Rock and Roll: Live and Unseen, which will see publication in October. Three of McKay’s photos were chosen for the project, which may have a related exhibition and is planned for use in music education efforts. Cat People of Athens, Unite The Amazing Acro-Cats Arrive for a Two-Night Stand

T

hough fluffy and adorable, cats are enigmatic creatures. How many pet owners have tried to get their cat to respond to them? Dogs can play dead, fetch, shake hands and even speakâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;so why wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cats do anything?

Based in Chicago, the Amazing AcroCats are changing the narrative about cat training. The Acro-Cats are a touring acrobatic show made up of foster rescue cats and other animals that have been trained

using a stress-free, positive-reinforcement method called clicker training. Instead of physical objects, trainers use mouth whistles, clicks and other sounds to signal the animals. Through this training, the AcroCats jump, pounce, ride skateboards, walk tightropes and even perform in a sevenpiece band, the Rock Cats.

All of this is made possible by Samantha Martin, â&#x20AC;&#x153;chief executive humanâ&#x20AC;? for the Amazing Acro-Cats. Martin is an animal trainer who rescues homeless cats and dogs and makes sure they find loving homes.

More than 200 animals have found foster care thanks to the efforts of Martin and the Acro-Cats. A percentage of sales from every show goes towards maintaining the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s foster and rescue efforts, as well as the occasional fundraising and promotion for local rescues.

Currently, the Acro-Cats feature a parade of felines, as well as a chicken and a groundhog. The cats and the chicken have been performers since day one. According to Martin, chickens are more reliable than cats, and her chicken held the circus together when the cats called it quits.

The groundhog is a newer addition.

Before the Acro-Cats, Martin ran an educational zoo with wildlife programs, until it was eventually discontinued. After being with the groundhog for so long, she couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t imagine life without him and put him in the show.

Besides fostering homeless animals, the Acro-Cats also foster a sense of community. The show draws all types of attendees, which is a rare feat for circus performances.

While the audience is always full of cat lovers, cat skeptics are also often present. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think non-cat people are curious, and they get to see what cats are all about,â&#x20AC;? says Martin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have had some people become convinced after seeing our show that cats arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t so bad.â&#x20AC;?

And Martin says the shows only bring cat people closer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our fans run across all lines. One time, I heard an older lady lean into a punk-rock-looking guy at a show in Phoenix and ask, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;How many do you have?â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? Martin recalls. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very beautiful to see such a variety of people coming together for an amazing cause.â&#x20AC;?

But enough about humans. More about these cats! While most of the show is kept under wraps until the actual performance, a few details are available.

First, yes, the AcroCats do wear costumes and hatsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;sometimes for the whole show. Second, not only do the cats have really great names, they also have distinct personalities. Martin lists a few of her cats and their television/film counterparts: Sookie is like Phoebe from â&#x20AC;&#x153;Friends,â&#x20AC;? free-spirited and spacey; Buggles is Marvin the Martian, always doing crazy experiments; JAX is goth-like, like Lydia from Beetlejuice; Alley is a valley girl; and Wiki is James Cagneyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;he even has the voice. Last but not least is Oz, whom Martin describes as Brendan Fraser in Bedazzled: awkward, nerdy and desperate to be liked.

Just as cats often take on human personalities in the eyes of their owners, the Acro-Cats provide people with an intimate glimpse at feline nature. As Thomas Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Malley says in the 1970 film The AristoCats, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everybody wants to be a cat!â&#x20AC;? f

The Annual Flagpole Athens Music Awards Show is designed to honor and celebrate those who make Athens, GA a center of musical creativity, enjoyment & accomplishment.

Each year, Music Editor Gabe Vodicka convenes a panel of Athens-music experts, including journalists, promoters, producers and others, to determine a list of nominees for the Flagpole Athens Music Awards. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 (PG-13) Believing that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 could be an improvement over its predecessor, which happens to remain the most charming movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is tough. Somehow, writerdirector James Gunn has done what could be deemed the impossible. The further galactic adventures of the Guardiansâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Thanosâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; daughter Gamora (Zoe Saldana), colorfully literal alien Drax (Dave Bautista), cybernetically enhanced raccoon Rocket (v. Bradley Cooper) and a baby version of the humanoid tree known as Groot (v. Vin Diesel)â&#x20AC;&#x201D;is the yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s funniest blockbuster to double down with equal amounts of heart and humanity, despite the distinct lack of many human Ha ha ha! You look weird! characters. It also features has led their entire fleet to Egoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s planet Kurt Russell and his luscious locks, a castseeking vengeance. COLOSSAL (R) Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m pretty sure I have never seen a kai-blackrom-com-ju, and even then I cannot imagine one being as wonderful as the fourth film from the wild mind of Nacho Vigalondo. (His 2007 Timecrimes is a trippy timetravel gem.) The film unexpectedly stars Anne Hathaway, way off her beaten path, as Gloria, an unemployed writer/thirtysomething slacker back living in her hometown after being kicked out of her boyfriendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s apartment. Soon, she reconnects with childhood friend, Oscar (Jason Sudeikis), who runs his late fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bar. But Gloriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s real problem is that her actions seem to influence the destruction wrought by a giant monster terrorizing Seoul, South Korea.

After an initial reaction of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Huh?,â&#x20AC;? the bewildered filmgoer will enjoy settling into a movie unlike any other currently available to watch. Hathaway breathes likability into what might have been an edgier Parker Posey role in the halcyon days of â&#x20AC;&#x2122;90s independent cinema. Vigalondo even manages not to trip while wrapping up his tricky narrative gamble. Colossal is cool and quirkyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; two qualities difficult enough to pull off alone, much less when combined.

I feel I did not mention the giant monster enough. Guys: Colossal features a giant monster threatening Seoul!

THE DINNER (R) Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s highly doubtful anyone would want to have dinner with this quartet of elitist sad sacks. History teacher Paul Lohman (Steve Coogan) and his wife, Claire (Laura Linney), join Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s congressman brother, Stan (Richard Gere), a gubernatorial candidate, and his younger wife, Katelyn (Rebecca Hall), for dinner at an exclusive restaurant.

The Messenger writer-director Oren Moverman adapts Herman Kochâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s novel (already the source material for a Dutch and Italian film), revealing crucial information bit by bit via flashbacks. I wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ruin any of the reveals, as the suspenseful disclosures are the filmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sole means of redemption.

Sure, Coogan, Linney, Gere and Hall give the tremendous performances expected of them, but the characters are categorically unlikable outside of Gereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s politician, the sole dinner party member whose reputation improves. The more we learn about Paul, Claire and the spawn of both couples, the less appetizing The Dinner becomes. f

Rock That Bikini This Summer Advice for Athensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Loose and Lovelorn

I think I could make one work, but of course Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m scared Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll look like a trussed turkey and get laughed off the beach. I shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care what people think, but I do. Is it really true that we all have a bikini body, or am I just telling myself to feel better?

If you own a bikini, you have a bikini body. If you put it on and think you are making it work, you are.

I wear a bikini, and I know there are people who look at me wearing it in public and tsk, but I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hang around with those people. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go swimming with those types. I highly recommend that you shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t, either. Clique up with some progressive, body-positive people and find a pool to crash. Sun yourself with no fear of judgment and with the security of knowing that your friends will stand up to people who might

with consent, and with the intent of getting laughs.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not as entertaining when one person doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wanna participate or doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the same proficiency with off-the-cuff clapbacks. At that point, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just one person picking on another person, and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not funny. Add nonconsensual video recording to the mix, and your friendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s behavior is verging on toxic.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure that, for them, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all fun and games in their attempt to become internetfamous by insulting people, but theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re too shortsighted to see how impolite and alienating their behavior can be. This person needs a real talking-to before you and the rest of their circle ditch them.

Next time your friend attempts an impromptu roast session, shut it down. Ask them why theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to roast people who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wanna play along, and tell them to stop. Say the words, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not funny.â&#x20AC;?

Take a closer look at your circle of friends, then go put on your bikini and go get a tan. If there is someone in your life questioning your choice of swimwear, kindly tell them to paddle away.

My â&#x20AC;&#x153;friendâ&#x20AC;? thinks theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re funny and is always trying to roast me on camera, but theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re really just a bully. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sick of it, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not the only one. What to do?

Call â&#x20AC;&#x2122;em out! Do it at the exact moment theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to make a laughing stock out of you or someone else for their own glory. One glance around Black Twitter displays how robust â&#x20AC;&#x153;roastingâ&#x20AC;? culture is right nowâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;dirty dozens,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;readingâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;snapping,â&#x20AC;? for those not in the knowâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;but the videos we see online are typically just friends roasting each other

Why isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t there a Sweet Hut in Athens?

Sincerely, Hungry4Change Hi Hungry, Well, it seems that Sweet Hut is just your garden-variety privately-owned business, so it looks like the owner will have to take an interest in opening a location in Athens if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wanna have to travel to Kennesaw. It looks like itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bakery that also serves burgers and bubble tea, so Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d recommend you check out Cafe 180°F on Broad Street for the latterâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never been, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard great things. If you need really good sweets and meat all under the same roof, go to Big City Bread or Donderoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kitchen (though the latter doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t serve burgers).
