Athens Hices Over Plus, Downtown Grows, Southern Mill, UGA Remains and More News

Unless you were eating fried chicken, vegetables and salad in the Holiday Inn with the genial Classic City Rotary Club, you probably didn’t see him. And you’re not going to—at least not in a town hall meeting.

Open to the public, a town hall meeting is what many congressmen traditionally hold in their districts during a recess in Washington to find out the concerns of their many constituents. Hice may have a “coffee with the congressman” in other parts of the district with a small number of invited guests, or he may meet with Athens Republicans, but that’s about it in AthensClarke County.

Rotary club meetings are open only to members and guests of members.

Outside the Holiday Inn and at the Arch on Monday, a few people gathered to protest Hice’s reluctance to hold a town meeting in Athens. The signs read, “Am I scary?” and “Be brave host Athens town hall” and “Where is Jody Hice.” With Donald Trump receiving 28 percent of the vote in our community, a public reception for a Republican representative would likely yield more questions than what Hice fielded from the Rotary Club.

There were a few questions at the Monday meeting—one member asked about Do Not Call and another asked about FairTax. Hice said he’s working on tax reform, which includes cutting corporate taxes, reducing tax forms to the size of a postage stamp and making the IRS a service-oriented agency. He said there’s no constitutional authority for the Environmental Protection Agency or the

federal Department of Education to exist, and he wants the country to return to a “constitutional form of government.” He also said “some of these agencies have budgets the size of small countries’.”

Rotary member Debbie Heisman told the congressman she disagrees with “99.99 percent of everything you are for,” and then asked about the possibility of Congress creating “an intelligent work visa program.”

She also said lawmakers are underestimating the impact that agriculture has on Georgia’s economy. It’s necessary for farmers to employ immigrants to help harvest fruits and vegetables, something forgotten by those advocating deporting 11 million people. Hice said he favors a guest worker program and believes there will be some such provision in immigration reform legislation.

When asked whether he supports an investigation into the ties between the Trump Administration and Russia, he said, “There’s no question Russia’s not a friend of the United States” and that “they’ve been trying to hack us for years.” But “the investigation needs to go beyond this administration.”

There are so many needs and issues and he’s working so hard in Washington, Hice said, that he won’t be back in the district— other than his regular weekend trips home—until mid-April.

Athens For Everyone has scheduled a town hall meeting with Hice on Apr. 22 at 4 p.m. at the ACC Library, but neither he nor his staff members have confirmed he will participate. Since he was elected to Congress in 2014, Hice has yet to hold a public town hall meeting in Athens.

Classic City Rotary Club President Sarah Morang emphasized that the group is nonpartisan. “The club doesn’t take a position on political matters, so our invitation to speak is not an endorsement, but is an opportunity to hear him speak on matters important to our district and ask some questions,” she said. UGA Remains On Mar. 1, the University of Georgia announced that it would reinter dozens of remains that were discovered buried underneath a Baldwin Hall parking lot in 2015 while the university was adding onto the building. And oh, by the way, DNA testing showed that those remains belonged to African Americans, not white people as earlier believed.

Fred Smith suspected that all along.

Three days later, he and other local black leaders held a news conference outside the historic Morton Theatre—Athens’ most prominent black landmark—to express their displeasure with the way UGA has handled the remains and demand input into what is done with them, considering that they likely belonged to slave ancestors of Athens residents.

in the ground. UGA loaded boxes containing them into a rental box truck and— without telling anyone, and with the gates locked—reinterred them at Oconee Hill Cemetery. “We didn’t want to turn it into a spectacle,” spokesman Gregory Trevor told the Athens Banner-Herald.

UGA provided reporters with a letter from the state archeologist advising the university to bury the exhumed remains in the same pattern they were found to avoid splitting up families and in the nearest cemetery, which happens to be Oconee Hill.

That letter was released “to avert blame away from UGA and to provide talking points to senior staff and sympathizers,” according to Smith. “But for us, it’s time to grieve for the girls, boys, women and men abused in life and in death; for the ones removed from the cemetery recently and to who-knows-where in the past; for the ones still buried there; and for them whose remains may have been removed with construction dirt.”

The question remains whether UGA knew the remains were there when they started digging; the university says no, but some whisper otherwise. And although Oconee Hill, like its predecessor on Jackson Street, contained remains of both races, many members of the black community would prefer if they had been reinterred at a local black cemetery, such as Gospel Pilgrim or Brooklyn, which were long neglected but are being restored as educational opportunities. Now, it’s too late.

UGA will hold a reburial ceremony at 3 p.m. Monday, Mar. 22. A “stately granite marker that provides an account of their discovery and reinterment” will be placed at the gravesite. After years of sputtering and stalling, construction at Southern Mill finally kicked off Mar. 6. The mixed-use development will restore much of the deteriorating mill buildings located off Chase Street, converting them into commercial space as well as one- and two-bedroom apartments. Carter Broun of Millworks Holdings, which is overseeing the project, said work on the residential portion will likely begin in June or July.

In the meantime, crews will focus on the 35,000-square-foot restoration and buildout of “Building A”—home to the expansion of Creature Comforts Brewing Co. “We’ll come in and do all the infrastructure work, pave the parking lots, put in all new water, sewer and electric,” said Broun. “And we will

build the building to a shell space—they will come in after that and start to put in equipment and things like that.”

The plan is to get Creature Comforts access to its space by May. “Luckily with these buildings, there’s not so much interior stuff that you have to worry about,” added Broun, noting that even a partially collapsed exterior brick wall is a simple fix. “That’s going to be [demolishing] the rotted wood and rebuilding from the ground up. Out of all the buildings, [Building A] is by far the most straightforward.”

Once the crews get to the residential portion this summer, he said, construction gets more complicated. The build-out of the more than 100 apartments will be different for each one to accommodate the quirks of the historic mill building.

Built around 1900, Southern Mill produced denim for jeans and remained occupied for nearly 100 years. In recent years, the buildings have suffered under the weight of snow, heavy rain and disrepair.

Millworks has been working on plans to redevelop the 18-acre complex for more than two years, racing the clock as the buildings begin to crumble. When completed, the apartments will be rented at market rate, per the requirements of federal historic tax credits received for the project, targeting young professionals and retirees as tenants. How Big Is Downtown?

It’s no secret that downtown has grown since the Athens Downtown Development Authority was created in 1977, pushing well past boundaries set 40 years ago. So Athens-Clarke officials want to expand those boundaries, north of Dougherty Street and along Prince Avenue, North Avenue and Oconee Street. Almost every downtown property owner is on board— but not downtown’s largest development.

Several commissioners criticized the developers of The Mark—the massive luxury student apartment complex under construction on Oconee Street—for being the only major development downtown to opt out of the expanded downtown boundaries the commission approved Tuesday.

The authority gave property owners the choice of opting out of the district. Despite paying an additional one mill in property taxes ($1 per $2,500 of property value), only the owners of two townhouses and two small businesses did not want to be a part of the ADDA, in addition to The Mark.

“The one-mill tax for [The Mark owner Landmark Properties] is sizable bucks,” attorney Jim Warnes said when the ADDA approved the new boundaries Feb. 10. “They didn’t feel like the benefits available would be a benefit to them.”

Those benefits include grants to improve building facades, revolving loans for small businesses, support for special events like AthFest and advocacy, said ADDA board member and Commissioner Mike Hamby, who serves on the ADDA board. In addition, the authority recently hired two new executive directors to share duties, with the goal of taking on more of a forward-looking planning and economic development role in addition to overseeing parking, marketing downtown and serving as a sort of clearinghouse for complaints (dirty sidewalks, panhandling, etc.).

Commissioner Jerry NeSmith noted that The Mark’s approximately 1,000 residents

will be using downtown infrastructure without paying what others are paying. Yet the development is using its location as a marketing tool, Commissioner Melissa Link said.

“I picked up their brochure, and the first thing they tout is the ultimate downtown location, so they are certainly marketing themselves based on being downtown, and their zoning is commercial-downtown,” Link said. “I just want to express my disappointment at this development not being a part of downtown officially, yet they’ll definitely be enjoying all the amenities of being downtown.”

Mayor Nancy Denson came to The Mark’s defense, and warned commissioners not to second-guess Landmark.

“I really think we need to be careful about publicly criticizing one of the people in our business community who makes a business decision that we don’t know all the details behind. And perhaps we didn’t do a good enough job of giving them the benefits of being in downtown, or they might have decided to do something sooner,” Denson said. “It was disturbing to me to hear criticism of a business that’s increasing our tax base significantly, and I believe they’re doing a good job on their product because of the business decision they made.”

Although The Mark opted out, other major property owners—including the owners of the Bottleworks, the mixed-use development planned for the St. Joe property, Hotel Indigo and other downtown apartment complexes—did not.

Although the ADDA could have forced the issue, The Mark was allowed to opt out because Athens’ state legislators said they did not want to carry a bill that included borders with unwilling properties inside.

Those legislators are now expected to introduce a bill in the General Assembly to expand the boundaries. [BA]

More Commission News The commission also voted to send back to committee a requirement that large special events such as AthFest and Twilight purchase $10 million worth of insurance coverage, up from the current $2 million.

The requirement would have cost those events nearly $10,000 each, jeopardizing them in the future and, in AthFest’s case, taking arts and music funding away from local schoolchildren.

The insurance requirement grew out of an initial assignment to streamline the event-permitting process (which was also approved last Tuesday) in the wake of the ADDA’s struggles to put on a last-minute Fourth of July fireworks show last year. The ADDA won’t be doing it again, but Agora co-owner Russell Edwards brought several other downtown business owners to the meeting to urge the Mayor and Commission to keep the fireworks downtown.

In addition, the commission voted to scale back funding for Leisure Services scholarships for children from low-income families, which the department hopes will cut down on the number of no-shows at popular programs like summer camps.

Instead of covering the full cost, the new scholarship program will only cover 25, 50 or 75 percent. But commissioners worried that some families may not be able to afford even a quarter of the full fee, so they passed a motion by Link requiring county staff to create a private sponsorship program by July 2018. Ralston also set up a new House subcommittee earlier this year that is focusing on how to generate funding for transportation infrastructure, especially mass transit.

“Transportation now is an increasingly big deal, as it should be,” Ralston said just before the session started. “Transit’s an important part of that. I think we have to recognize that transit is not only part of congestion mitigation, it’s economic development.”

He is taking a hands-on approach to the issues that are sure to be part of the next governor’s race, when voters will be choosing a replacement for the term-limited Nathan Deal. It seems likely that a person taking on that sort of role is thinking seriously about running for the office himself.

What sort of record would a candidate Ralston have to offer? He can justifiably claim that he helped clean up the mess in the House of Representatives when the former speaker was enmeshed in scandal.

On the other hand, after he was elected speaker, Ralston was slow to recognize that lobbyist spending on legislators, including himself, was getting out of hand. He only grudgingly came around to support legislation that placed a few limits on what lobbyists could spend to influence lawmakers.

If Ralston decides to run for governor, he will have to contend with a crowded field in the Republican primary. Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle has essentially spent the last eight years preparing to run for governor, as has Secretary of State Brian Kemp. Former congressman Lynn Westmoreland is still hinting that he might jump into the race as well.

The doors are wide open on this one.

Ralston has made no definitive statement yet on what his plans are for 2018. If he does indeed enter the governor’s race, it shouldn’t be a huge surprise to anyone. f

David Ralston is being mentioned as a possible candidate for governor, which leads to an obvious question: Why would someone want to run for governor when they’re already the speaker of the Georgia House?

The speaker is one of the most powerful people in state government. Thanks to the generosity of lobbyists, he can eat and drink without ever paying for it and even get a free trip to Europe.

House speakers are not term-limited, either. As long as your caucus supports what you’re doing and remains in control of the House, you can be speaker as long as you like. Tom Murphy held on to the job for more than 28 years.

Ralston delivered a luncheon speech before one of the state’s largest media organizations, the Atlanta Press Club, and was asked whether he wanted to run for governor. He could have put any speculation to rest with a simple answer of no. Instead, he gave such coy replies as, “I don’t think it’s appropriate to think or talk about that particularly during a legislative session. I mean, we have enough distractions as it is.”

In addition to his refusal to say no, Ralston is also getting out in front of some serious policy issues. Normally, speakers of the House don’t take a leading role on policy initiatives. Their job is to preside over the House and keep the legislative process moving in a prescribed manner. But Ralston has created a rural policy advisory council, and will appoint 15 House members to this special committee. They will spend the next 20 months developing ideas for how to bring more jobs to rural Georgia.

“The bright light of economic development and growth is not shining on every part of our state,” Ralston said in his Press Club speech. “We have talked about this divide for too long.”

Recognizing the Year’s Worst in Government Transparency By the Electronic Frontier Foundation

A

thick fog is rolling in over Sunshine Week (Mar. 12–18), the annual event when government transparency advocates raise awareness about the importance of access to public records. We are entering an age when officials at the highest levels seek to discredit critical reporting with “alternative facts,” “fake news” slurs and selective access to press conferences, while making their own claims without providing much in the way to substantiate them.

But no matter how much the pundits claim we’re entering a “post-truth” era, it is crucial we defend the idea of proof. Proof is in the bureaucratic paper trails. Proof is in the accounting ledgers, the legal memos, the audits and the police reports. Proof is in the data. When it comes to government actions, that proof is often obtained by leveraging laws like the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and state-level public records laws—except when government officials seek to ignore the rules to suppress evidence.

At the same time, this is also par for the course. As award-winning investigative reporter Shane Bauer recently posted on Twitter: “I’ve been stonewalled by the government throughout my journalistic career. I’m seriously baffled by people acting like this is brand new.”

For the third year, the Electronic Frontier Foundation presents “The Foilies,” our anti-awards identifying the times when access to information has been stymied or

when government agencies have responded in the most absurd ways to records requests. Think of it as the Golden Raspberries but for government transparency, where the bad actors are actually going off-script to deny the public the right to understand what business is being conducted on its behalf.

To compile these awards, EFF solicited nominations from around the country and scoured through news stories and the #FOIAFriday Twitter threads to find the worst, the silliest and the most ridiculous responses to requests for public information.

The Make America Opaque Again Award

A commitment to public transparency should start at the top. But from the beginning of his campaign, President Trump has instead committed to opacity by refusing to release his tax returns, citing concerns about an ongoing IRS audit. Now that he’s been elected, Trump’s critics, ethics experts and even some allies have called on him to release his tax returns and prove that he has eliminated potential conflicts of interest and sufficiently distanced himself from the businesses in his name that stand to make more money now that he’s in office. But the Trump Administration has not changed its stance. No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, the American public should be outraged

that we now have the first sitting president since the 1970s to avoid such a baseline transparency tradition.

The Hypocrisy Award

Former Indiana Governor—and current Vice President—Mike Pence Vice President Mike Pence cared a lot about transparency and accountability in 2016, especially when it came to email. A campaign appearance couldn’t go by without Pence or his running mate criticizing Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton for using a private email server during her tenure as Secretary of State. In fact, the Foilies honored Clinton last year for her homebrewed email approach.

But Pence seemed much less bothered by those transparency and accountability concerns when he used a private AOL email address to conduct official business as Indiana’s governor. The Indiana Star reported in February that Pence used the account to communicate “with top advisors on topics ranging from security gates at the governor’s residence to the state’s response to terror attacks across the globe.” That means that critical homeland security information was kept in an account likely less secure than government accounts (his account was reportedly hacked, too), and Pence’s communications were shielded from government records requirements.

As chief investigator for WBRZ in Baton Rouge, Nakamoto filed records requests regarding the White Castle mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s salary. But when he turned up with a camera crew

Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke rose to prominence in 2016 as one of then-candidate Donald Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top surrogates, prone to making inflammatory remarks about the Black Lives Matter movement, such as calling them a hate group and linking them to ISIS. But the press has also been a regular target.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Political Watchdog columnist Daniel Bice filed a series of records requests with the sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office, demanding everything from calendars, to details about an NRA-funded trip to Israel, to records related to a series of jail deaths. So far, Clarke has been extremely slow to release this information, while being extremely quick to smear the reporter on the sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s official Facebook page.

Clarke frequently refers to the publication as the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Urinal Sentinelâ&#x20AC;? and has diagnosed Bice with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheriff Clarke Derangement Syndrome.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I deal with open-records requests with local governments and police departments. I do it at the city, county and state level,â&#x20AC;? Bice says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s by far the worst for responding to public records.â&#x20AC;?

In May 2016, Clarke published a short essay on Facebook titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;When Journalism Becomes an Obsession.â&#x20AC;? Clarke claimed that after he rejected Biceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s request for an interview, Bice retaliated with a series of public-records requests, ignoring the fact that these requests are both routine and are often a reporterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only recourse when an official refuses to answer questions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This lazy manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s way of putting together newspaper columns uses tax-paid, government employees as pseudo-interns to help him gather information to write stories,â&#x20AC;? Clarke wrote.

Memo to Clarke: Requesting and reviewing public records is tedious and time-consuming, and certainly not the way to score an easy scoop. If anything, ranting on Facebook, then issuing one-sentence news releases about those Facebook posts, is the lazy manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s way of being accountable to your constituents.

The Fake News Award

Santa Maria Police Department In 2015, the Santa Maria Police Department in California joined many other agencies in using the online service Nixle to distribute public information in lieu of press releases. The agency told citizens to sign up for â&#x20AC;&#x153;trustworthy information.â&#x20AC;?

Less than a year later, police broke that trust. Santa Maria police posted to their Nixle account a report that two individuals had been arrested and deported, which was promptly picked up the local press. Months later, court documents revealed that it had all been a lie to ostensibly help the individualsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;who had been targeted for murder by a rival gangâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;escape the city.

Police were fiercely unapologetic. The agency has yet to remove the offending alert from Nixle or offer any kind of addendum, a direct violation of Nixleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s terms of service, which prohibit the transmission of â&#x20AC;&#x153;fraudulent, deceptive or misleading communicationsâ&#x20AC;? through the service.

U.S. Department of Justice America Rising PAC, a conservative opposition-research committee, has been filing FOIA requests on a number of issues, usually targeting Democrats. Following Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scaliaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passing, the PAC sent a FOIA to the Attorney General seeking emails referencing the death.

But America Rising never received a response acknowledging the DOJ received the request. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s because the DOJ sent it to a random federal inmate serving time on child pornography charges. The offender, however, was nice enough to forward the message to the PAC with a note railing against the â&#x20AC;&#x153;malicious incompetenceâ&#x20AC;? of the Obama Administration.

The FBI spent most of 2016 doing what might be charitably described as beta testing a proprietary online FOIA portal that went live in March. But beta testing is probably a misnomer, because it implies that the site actually improved after its initial rollout.

The FBIâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s year of â&#x20AC;&#x153;beta testingâ&#x20AC;? included initially proposing a requirement that requesters submit a copy of their photo ID before submitting a request via the portal, and also imposed â&#x20AC;&#x153;operating hoursâ&#x20AC;? and limited the number of requests an individual could file per day.

Yet even after the FBI walked back from those proposals, the site appears designed to frustrate the publicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to make the premier federal law-enforcement agency more transparent. The portal limits the types of requests that can be filed digitally to people seeking information about themselves or others. Requesters cannot use the site to request information about FBI operations or activities, otherwise known as the bread and butter of FOIA requests. Oh, and the portalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s webform is capped at 3,000 characters, so brevity is very much appreciated!

Worse, now that the portal is online, the FBI has stopped accepting FOIA requests via email, meaning fax and snail mail are now supposed to be the primary (and frustratingly slow) means of sending requests to the FBI. It almost seems like the FBI is trying to make it hard to submit FOIA requests. k continued on next page

The Undermining Openness Award

Documents released in 2016 in response to a FOIA lawsuit by the Freedom of the Press Foundation show that the U.S. Department of Justice secretly lobbied Congress in 2014 to kill a FOIA reform bill that had unanimously passed the U.S. House of Representatives 410-0.

But the secret axing of an overwhelmingly popular transparency bill wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even the most odious aspect of DOJâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s behavior. In talking points disclosed via the lawsuit, DOJ strongly opposed codifying a â&#x20AC;&#x153;presumption of openness,â&#x20AC;? a provision that would assume by default that every government record should be disclosed to the public unless an agency could show that its release could result in foreseeable harm.

DOJâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s argument: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The proposed amendment is unacceptably damaging to the proper administration of FOIA and of the government as a whole,â&#x20AC;? which is bureaucratese for something like â&#x20AC;&#x153;What unhinged transparency nut came up with this crazy presumption of openness idea, anyway?â&#x20AC;?

That would be Obama, whose FOIA guidance on his first day in office back in 2009 was the blueprint for the presumption of openness language included in the bill.

Perhaps DOJ thought it had to save Obama from himself?

DOJâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fearmongering won out, and the bill died. Two years later, Congress eventually passed a much weaker FOIA reform bill, but it did include the presumption of openness DOJ had previously fought against.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still waiting for the â&#x20AC;&#x153;government as a wholeâ&#x20AC;? to collapse.

States of Texas and Arizona BuzzFeed reporters Chris McDaniel and Tasneem Nashrulla have been on a quest to find out where states like Texas and Arizona are obtaining drugs used in lethal injection, as some pharmaceutical suppliers have decided not to participate in the capital punishment machine. But these states are fighting to keep the names of their new suppliers secret, refusing to release anything identifying the companies in response to BuzzFeedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s FOIA requests.

At the crux of the investigation is whether the states attempted to obtain the drugs illegally from India. At least one shipment is currently being detained by the FDA. The reason for transparency is obvious if one looks only at one previously botched purchase the reporters uncovered: Texas had tried to source pentobarbital from an Indian company called Provizer Pharma, run by five 20-year-olds. Indian authorities raided their offices for allegedly selling psychotropic drugs and opioids before the order could be fulfilled.

Public officials often dehumanize the news media to score cheap points, but can the same ploy work when fighting public records requests? Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the issue in a very strange case between the IND, a New Orleans media outlet, and a city marshal. After the marshal lost his bid to keep records secret in the trial court, he appealed on the grounds that IND had no right to bring the lawsuit in the first place.

The marshal, who faced fines, community service and house arrest for failing to turn over records, argues that Louisianaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s public records law requires that a living, breathing human make a request, not a corporate entity such as IND. Make no mistake: There is no dispute that an actual human filed the request, which sought records relating to a bizarre news conference in which the marshal allegedly used his public office to make baseless allegations against a political opponent. Instead, the dispute centers on a legal formalism of whether IND can sue on its own behalf, rather than suing under the name of the reporter. The marshalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seemingly ridiculous argument does have some basis in the text of the statute, which defines a requester as a person who is at least 18 years old.

That said, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an incredibly cynical argument, putting the letter well over the spirit of the law in what appears to be a well-documented effort by the marshal to violate the law and block public access. We hope the learned Louisiana appellate judges see through this blatant attempt to shortcircuit the public records law.

General Services Administration One of the threads that reporters have tried to unravel through the Trump campaign is how the prolific businessman would separate himself from his financial interests, especially regarding his 30-year contract with the federal government to build a Trump International Hotel at the location of the federally owned Old Post Office in D.C., a paper airplaneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s flight from the White House.

BuzzFeed filed a FOIA request with the General Services Administration for a copy of the contract. What they received was a highly redacted document that raised more questions than it answered, including what role Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family plays in the project. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The American taxpayer would have no clue who was getting the lease to the building,â&#x20AC;? says reporter Aram Roston, who was investigating how Trump failed to uphold promises made when he put in a proposal for the project. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know who owned this project.â&#x20AC;?

After pushing back, BuzzFeed was able to get certain sections unredacted, including evidence that three of Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Ivanka, Donald Jr. and Ericâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;all received a 7.425 percent stake through their LLCs, seemingly without injecting any money of their own.

Elster Solutions, Landis+Gyr, Ericsson In May 2016, several smart-meter companies sued transparency website MuckRock and one of its users, Phil Mocek, in a failed attempt to permanently remove documents from the website that they claimed contained trade secrets. Some of the companies initially obtained a court order requiring MuckRock to take down public records posted to the site that the City of Seattle had already released to the requester.

But in their rush to censor MuckRock and its user, the companies overlooked one small detail: the First Amendment. The Constitution plainly protected MuckRockâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to publish public records one of its users lawfully obtained from the City of Seattle, regardless of whether they contained trade secrets. A judge quickly agreed, ruling that the initial order was unconstitutional and allowing the documents to be reposted on MuckRock.

The case and several others filed against MuckRock and its user later settled or were dismissed outright. The documents continue to be hosted on MuckRock for all to see.

A local citizen in Portland, OR filed a records request to find out everyone city Commissioner Amanda Fritz had blocked or muted from her Twitter account. This shouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been easy. However, Fritz decided to go the long way, scribbling down each and every handle on a sheet of paper.

She then rescanned that list in, and sent it back to the requester. The records did show that Fritz had decided to hush accounts that were trying to affect public policy, such as @DoBetterPDX, which focuses on local efforts to help homeless people, and anonymous self-described urban activist @jegjehPDX. When public agencies get requests for digital data, officials can usually submit a query straight to the relevant database. But not in Missouri, apparently, where officials must use handcrafted, shade-grown database queries by public records artisans.

At least, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the only explanation we can come up with for why the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services estimated that it would take roughly 35,000 hours and $1.5 million to respond to an exceedingly simple request for state birth and death data.

Nonprofit Reclaim the Records, whose name pretty eloquently sums up its mission, believed that a simple database query combined with copy and paste was all that was needed to fulfill its request. Missouri officials begged to differ, estimating that it would take them the equivalent of a person working around the clock for more than four years to compile the list by hand.

Although the fee estimate is not the highest the Foilies has ever seenâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;that honor goes to the Pentagon for its $660 million estimate in response to a MuckRock userâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s FOIA request last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Missouriâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s estimate was outrageous. Stranger still, the agency later revised its estimated costs down to $5,000 without any real explanation. Reclaim the Records tried negotiating further to no avail, as officials ultimately said they could not fulfill the request. Reclaim the Records has since filed a lawsuit for the data.

The Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation Turns 50 A Year’s Worth of Events and New Programs to Celebrate the Anniversary

year full of celebration is in order for the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation as it turns 50 this year. After the National Historic Preservation Act was passed in 1966, the ACHF came together to save the Church-Waddel-Brumby House (circa 1820) in 1967.

Since then, the house, now the home of the Athens Welcome Center, has stood as a symbol of the effort to reclaim and preserve historic resources across the city.

But to Amy Kissane, the executive director of ACHF for 15 years, celebrating 50 years is as much about looking back as it is about looking forward.

• On May 22 at 7 p.m., a special 50thanniversary edition of the Historic Preservation Awards will take place at the Morton Theatre.

• A formal Golden Jubilee Dinner at the Lyndon House Arts Center, one of ACHF’s programming partners, on June 4, with keynote speaker David Brown, executive vice president and chief preservation officer of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

• From June 5–Aug. 25, rare items connected to the history of the ACHF from the archives of the UGA Special Collections Libraries will be on display.

• A collaboration with the Rabbit Box monthly storytelling series at 7 p.m. July 12 at The Foundry will draw from stories of those who experienced Athens during the 1960s historic preservation movement, as well as their relationship with historic buildings here.

• A mid-century modern lecture and tour series, “The Art of the Retro,” on Oct. 6 and 7.

• After taking a year off, on Dec. 3 the Heritage Holiday Gala home tour will return to wrap up the yearlong anniversary celebration.

The ACHF website, achfonline.org, will also feature a neighborhood of the month. (January was Dearing Street and Henderson Avenue, and February was the Cobbham Historic District.) Kindercore Is Opening a Record-Pressing Facility in Athens Athens

is a music town, but it’s not really a music industry town.

A new local company is looking to change that.

Confirming rumors that have circulated for the past year, the owners of the Kindercore Records label tell Flagpole they will open a vinyl-record manufacturing facility in a warehouse on Fritz Mar Lane in north Athens.

Kindercore Vinyl, which will begin operating as early as July, will be the only such facility in the state of Georgia, and one of about 20 currently operating in the entire country.

“We’re bringing music infrastructure to Athens,” says local musician and Kindercore Vinyl President Ryan Lewis.

“We’ve got world-class studios, we’ve got the [UGA] music business program. Bringing this next level of stuff into it [will be] really good for the town.”

The vinyl biz is booming. U.S. sales rose 26 percent in 2016, and a whopping 40 million records are projected to sell worldwide in 2017. Major plants, saddled with outdated equipment and facing overwhelming demand, have found it impossible to keep up. Order wait times stretch up to a year, and the huge backlog has led to quality issues.

“Vinyl is a seller’s market right now,” says Lewis. “There’s not enough capacity, so pressing plants ship terrible-quality vinyl.”

Bill Fortenberry, a local recording engineer who’s in charge of “sales and sound” for Kindercore Vinyl, says it will focus on raising that standard. “One of the things I’d like for us to do is make sure our basic offering is substantively better [than other companies], in terms of consistency,” he says.

Getting to this point wasn’t easy. Lewis and Fortenberry left steady jobs over a year ago to focus on the company. At various points, things looked grim. Chief Operating Officer Cash Carter describes being on the verge of eviction. “There were a lot of times that this almost crashed, and we were pretty close to giving up,” Fortenberry says.

Early on, they met with representatives from local and state government. They found many well wishes but no financial support, which Chief Technical Officer Dan Geller calls “a real missed opportunity” for Athens-Clarke County.

After much lobbying, they secured more than $1 million from a team of private investors led by entrepreneur Russell Bennett, whose LinkedIn page lists his specialties as “land acquisition and brokerage, sustainable farming, solar energy [and] biofuels.” An avid record collector, Bennett

the last decade or so, vinyl plants have competed for a limited number of inefficient, inconsistent manual presses that date back to the 1970s. Late last year, a Canadian firm called Viryl Technologies unveiled a fully automated, computerized press dubbed the Warm Tone, with the goal of “help[ing] the industry get rid of its own bottlenecks,” as Viryl CEO Chad Brown told The Globe and Mail newspaper.

Kindercore purchased three of the machines at a cost of over $200,000 each, and will be among the first to use the cutting-edge presses, which Geller refers to as “the Tesla of vinyl presses.” Their capacity is up to five times that of manual presses, meaning the Athens factory will be able to produce 2,000– 3,000 records each day.

Using automated equipment also means the company’s staff will be smaller than what one might expect from a manufacturing facility. Kindercore Vinyl will employ five salaried, full-time workers, and will hire part-time employees on a per-project basis for packing, shrink-wrapping and other tasks. Lewis hopes the plant can serve as a prototype, a local example of what he calls “modern manufacturing.”

“These aren’t really blue-collar jobs so much, because they require understanding of computer interfaces and technology,” says Lewis. “There’s gonna be a lot more thinking and a lot less bending and lifting.”

Kindercore plans to market itself to small regional labels and unsigned bands as a friendly, convenient pressing option. It will be “more open” than its competitors, says Lewis, and will encourage local customers to avoid costly shipping fees by picking up their orders directly from the factory.

Through its 10 songs, the band deftly and defiantly repurposes the best of latter 20th Century thinking person’s rock and roll. Yet for all its touchstones, Einschlagen appears to have arrived at its mix of heady instrumental/introspective house-party dance-floor rockers (“D.O.V.,” “Foraging,” “R.I.P. Doctor Grimm”) and dreamy pop (“Wolf Tooth,” Not Your Fault,” “Cookies for Kathy”) independently. The band also fleshes out the track “Pizza Face” in a way that’s as satisfying as

the demo version, albeit a tad on the nose with regard to studio trickery. Newly added to the group’s previous trio format is vocalist Aubry Meers on a handful of tracks, as well as Peyton Sarah performing the spoken-word part of “Embodied.” Throughout Einschlagen’s existence, member Taylor Chicoine has steadily helped to build and support a new stable of Athens artists via shows at his Pity Party Social Club and his label, Perfect Attendance Records. As far as scene-building and sense-of-community are concerned, the band is well situated within a group of similarly minded folks. However, as a discrete creative force, Einschlagen is currently without peer. The band plays a release show Saturday, Mar. 18 at Hi-Lo Lounge with Pansy and Fake Flowers. NEW WORK: The UGA Hodgson Singers will perform a new work by Austin, TX-based composer Craig Hella Johnson Friday, Mar. 17 at the Performing Arts Center’s Hodgson Hall. Johnson and the choral group he founded, Conspirare, were 2015 Grammy winners for their sixth album, The Sacred Spirit of Russia. This new work is titled “Considering Matthew Shepard.” Shepard, a gay 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming, was severely beaten the night of Oct. 6, 1998 in Laramie, WY and died six days later. The performance is led by Johnson at the piano, and will feature vocals plus a chamber ensemble. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased at pac.uga.edu. Also, see Calendar Pick on p. 24.

And that’s fine, even though Superbody is kinda blandly predictable, artless and derivative in that keyboard-boy way that re-imagines the 1980s as some sort of Day-Glo pop wonderland absent AIDS and the never-ending threat of nuclear war. I fully recognize the world today is, to put it quite mildly, less than desirable, but God, people, dig your own hole to escape into and stop scraping the bottom of Ronald Reagan’s barrel, for cripes’ sake. Love, Healing and Memory Four Exhibitions to See This Week

By Jessica Smith arts@flagpole.com Circle Gallery: Dedicating the last four years of his career to exploring the complex relationships between the mind and body, Rich Panico is not only a board-certified psychiatrist, but also a yogi and visual artist. Much of his interest lies in incorporating the therapeutic applications of yoga and mindfulness into a holistic approach for physical healing. On view in The Circle Gallery at the UGA College of Environment and Design, his exhibition â&#x20AC;&#x153;Landscape, Remembrance and Healingâ&#x20AC;? features 70 recent paintings reflecting on humanityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unique ability to transform difficult experiences into something beautiful.

Panico is the founder and former director of the Mind Body Institute at Piedmont Athens Regional, which specializes in meditation, yoga, tai chi, acupuncture and various forms of counseling. Now retired from that position, he continues to both practice and teach mind-body medicine part-time, and is a non-degree graduate student at the Lamar Dodd School of Art. His introduction to art was through a ceramics apprenticeship over 30 years ago, and he has created a large body of work through experimenting with indigenous clays and glaze materials. He began teaching himself how to use pastels in 2003, and his most recent landscapes and figurative drawings are characterized by quick gestural marks and bursts of bright colors.

An opening reception will be held Thursday, Mar. 16 from 4:30â&#x20AC;&#x201C;6 p.m., and an artist talk will be Thursday, Mar. 23 at 5 p.m. in lecture hall 123 of the Jackson Street Building. Panicoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exhibition will remain on view through Friday, Apr. 28.

K.A. Artist Shop: The third annual group exhibition â&#x20AC;&#x153;Love in all Its Many Formsâ&#x20AC;? embodies just that: manifestations of love represented through images of people,

places and concepts closest to the artistsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; hearts. Highlights include contributions by Brittani Bumb (whose portrait appeared on Flagpoleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cover in celebration of Valentineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day), Carolyn Simonds, Dimelza Broche, Lisa Freeman, Manda McKay and Missy Kulik.

A reception with the artists will be held at K.A. Artist Shop on Thursday, Mar. 16 from 7â&#x20AC;&#x201C;9 p.m., and the exhibition will remain on view through March.

Artists in Residence: Artists in Residence invites the public to visit the private homes and studios of well-known artists, offering an opportunity to hear a speaker share anecdotes, speak directly to the artists and view their collections and works in-progressâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;all while raising funds for public radio station WUGA. This month highlights Samuel Stabler, who holds a BFA in drawing and art education from UGAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lamar Dodd School of Art and a masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s from St. Martinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s College of Art and Design in London. Many of his pieces offer contemporary takes on classical paintings by recreating masterworks as pen-and-ink drawings accented with his signature neon yellow.

Stabler and his wife relocated from Brooklyn, NY a few years ago after purchasing an adobe-style house that they had often admired during prior visits to town.

Photographs in the Spirit of Jeremy Ayersâ&#x20AC;? celebrates the life of this great beloved, visionary artist, who died last October.

Flagpole: You once said that “writing comes out of silence.” What silence brought Brooklyn into the world?

Colm Tóibín: In every generation in almost every family over more than 150 years, people left and did not come back.

They left silence, and they themselves lived in a sort of silence, as new lives were built in the U.S. or England or Australia. You noticed it: the missing member of families. Over years, these names were consigned to silence.

The acting that brings Eilis and Tony’s love to life is the film’s greatest accomplishment. Cohen’s performance pays homage to Marlon Brando’s soft-spoken charisma in On the Waterfront, co-opting the late actor’s working-class romantic persona. Ronan’s expressive face makes Eilis’ inner world as fascinating as her blossoming social life. We see a character constantly in contemplation about her future in the film’s many closeups and shots of Eilis gazing into a mirror.

However, especially in Tony’s presence, a smile occasionally manages to crack the surface of gloomy rumination, showing love’s persistence.

or those looking to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by doing something more culturally immersive than drinking green beer, UGA will host Irish author Colm Tóibín for several events this week.

Tóibín’s visit to Athens is part of his tenure as the Willson Center’s Delta Chair for Global Understanding, which hosts global scholars, creative thinkers, artists and intellectuals to teach and research at UGA. On Wednesday, Ciné hosts a screening of the 2015 film Brooklyn, based on Tóibín’s 2009 novel. (Tickets for the screening are currently unavailable.) Thursday, Tóibín will give an on-campus lecture and appear at Avid Bookshop for a reading and book signing. Finally, on Friday, he will engage in a conversation with writer Fintan O’Toole at the Seney-Stovall Chapel. (See the Calendar for times and more information.)

FP: So much of the film depends on Eilis being uncertain but also quite tough and resilient. How do you think Saoirse Ronan conveyed that balance?

CT: She has a way of being able to express a great number of competing emotions, almost at the same time. John Crowley, the director, said that she would have made a great silent movie actress.

So he let the camera linger on her face as her emotions changed.

FP: Emory Cohen’s performance is also a highlight. When you were writing the book, did you see the character having the young Brando energy and mannerisms he brought to the role of Tony Fiorello?

CT: I am not sure I visualize characters in that way when I am writing. But I did see him smiling a great deal, which Emory also does in the film.

FP: Can you share anything about your current film project, Return to Montauk?

CT: I wrote the screenplay with Volker Schlöndorff, who is one of the world’s greatest film directors. It was a privilege working with him. We often sat opposite each other working out a scene, which we would both then rewrite. A great number of these scenes fell away until we got to the central story. f

After tragedy strikes back home, she returns to Ireland, where she begins a flirtation with the upstanding Jim Farrell (Domhnall Gleeson) and questions which country is truly her home.

Cinematographer Yves Bélanger’s palette resembles the antiquated Autochrome process of coloring black-and-white photographs, with bold reds and greens standing against sepia-tinged pastels. Seafoam green is common in the early parts of the film set in New York, reflecting Eilis’ feelings of being on the sea between continents. As Eilis gets accustomed to her new surroundings and realizes her love for Tony, red—the color worn by the experienced Ireland-toBrooklyn transplant who cares for a seasick Eilis in her transatlantic crossing—creeps into the frame.

The Athens Jewish Film Festival Is an Eye-Opening Event

would almost be easier to draft a list of famous directors who are not Jewish. From Woody Allen to Billy Wilder, from Stanley Kubrick to Joel Coen to Paul Newman, there is a rich history there. Wait—Paul Newman is Jewish?! (Cue Adam Sandler’s “Chanukah Song.”)

Many people are surprised when they realize how many Jews have contributed to film, literature and other art forms. Playwright Eve Ensler, creator of The Vagina Monologues, once wrote, “I grew up in a tradition where having ideas and contributing to the community and creating art that had an impact on the world mattered. That’s part of the Jewish tradition.”

Over the past decade or so, there has been an emergence of a number of Jewish film festivals, one of which is based in Athens. The Athens Jewish Film Festival, now in its ninth year, will take place Saturday, Mar. 18–Tuesday, Mar. 21. Nine films, a number of shorts and two special events will celebrate the Jewish experience. Comedies, dramas and documentaries will explore a variety of themes and subjects, including love, loss, sports, politics, the Holocaust, overcoming the odds—and your well-meaning Jewish family.

(Before we proceed any further, a disclaimer: In further evidence that Athens is indeed the Fisher-Price town some of us remember from our childhood, this writer is currently serving on the festival’s board.)

Abraham Tesser, while no longer directly involved in the festival, was its original founder. “The festival,” he says, ”was an Athens-area community effort from the beginning.

[My wife] Carmen and I had been reviewing movies for the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. Athens has a diverse and a culturally curious population. It occurred to us that this community might be interested in a Jewish film festival as well.”

“Man plans, and God laughs” is an old Yiddish proverb (later lifted by Woody Allen). Tesser began moving forward with the festival just as the recession hit. In spite of this, the money came in.

Longtime festival supporter Angela Meltzer helped Tesser get the Athens JFF off the ground. “Like any new, exciting venture,” Meltzer says, “you need lots of support from local businesses, and Athens came through in a big way… The Jewish Film Festival affords us not only entertainment, but more significantly exposure to cultural and historic experiences that we may not all be familiar or comfortable with.”

The festival continues to grow. Many volunteers screen hundreds of films in preparation. Special events occur throughout the year; the festival hosts screenings and brings in speakers on topics like racism.

But the culminating event happens in March.

Athens JFF President Ron Zell says, “We are trying something completely new this year in an attempt to broaden our audience. After our opening movie, Moos, at Ciné, we are having an opening celebration with a local DJ at Hotel Indigo.

The event will be reasonably priced, so that younger movie enthusiasts can attend.” The DJ is Andrew Byrd, and appetizers by home.made will add to the evening.

Four films will be screened at Ciné on Sunday, including the family-friendly Abulele, a fantasy in which a 10-year-old boy meets a friendly and ancient monster. Watch On the Map if you like basketball and history, or just want to catch footage of eye candy Moshe Dayan. A Blind Hero and Fire Birds will also be shown.

Monday brings The Kind Words, Fever at Dawn and Peter the Third. Fever at Dawn, described by Athens JFF Vice President Lynn Elmore as “very moving and sweet,” is by filmmaker Péter Gardo and based on love letters between his Holocaust-survivor parents written as they recovered

in hospitals in Sweden after the war. Gardo has written a novel from his screenplay with the same name.

The Athens JFF sponsors a short-film competition each year, and entries come from across the globe. Winners will be announced and screened on Tuesday. With intriguing titles like Jewish Blind Date, how can they not be wildly entertaining?

Following the shorts competition, a closing party will be held. This year, live music will add to the festivities. Here’s hoping that More Popular Than Klaatu, featuring Timi Conley, Bryan Poole, Peter Alvanos and Michael Guthrie, reference the party’s “Star Trek” theme. The festival is encouraging moviegoers to don Trekkie attire, as the closing film is For the Love of Spock.

For the Love of Spock is a documentary about Leonard Nimoy made by his son, Adam Nimoy. Nimoy has created a candid yet loving portrait of his father. The film would work sheerly on a kitsch and sentimental level, but goes a little deeper. The stories behind the character entertain.

About This Week’s Flagpole Cover Leonard Nimoy created his highly logical “Star Trek” character from his own deep understanding of emotion as a student of human behavior. However, Adam Nimoy’s documentary introduces audiences to a father who rarely engaged him emotionally during the height of the actor’s career.

Adam smartly uses their relationship as the throughline for the film, often presenting a development in Leonard’s career immediately followed by its impact on their relationship. The director employs a visual motif reminding the viewer that For the Love of Spock is the Leonard Nimoy experience as filtered through Adam, banishing all possibility of objectivity.

If we hear Leonard reading his book, I Am Spock, or a letter that he wrote to his son, we see Adam lounging on a couch reading the texts. This blunt but effective method, scattered throughout the proceedings, thoroughly grounds the documentary as a son’s story of his father, no matter how many of his father’s colleagues, famous fans or family give their two cents in interviews. Farhadi handles a delicate subject with the cleverness expected of a filmmaker working within the confines of a repressive cinematic environment. But Farhadi is able to effectively tell this tale despite the limits placed on what he can show and his characters can say. A UNITED KINGDOM (PG-13) Another lesserknown historical tale deservedly gets the feature film treatment in the newest from Amma Asante, the director of Belle.

In the late 1940s, the crown prince of Bechuanaland—now known as Botswana— Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo), meets cute and marries a white Englishwoman named Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike).

The ensuing controversy, fueled mostly by neighboring South Africa’s newly installed racist apartheid policies, leads the British government to exile Khama and take direct rule of their protectorate.

A period romantic drama from Britain hangs its hat on skilled performances. A United Kingdom does nothing to break the mold. It has the visual and aural inventiveness of a television movie, albeit one more likely to be seen on PBS than Lifetime. This film will certainly please the small crowds that choose to view this eventually triumphant history lesson. f

Kong Is Still King

The sharp script provides an abundance of character with which the above-average cast can work its magic. Hiddleston makes a strong case for more matinee-idol roles, and Oscar winner Brie Larson is particularly winsome as a war photog who could have easily become the unrewarding damsel in distress. Naturally, John C. Reilly steals the show as a World War II pilot stranded on the island for 30 years.

Kong: Skull Island has so much going for it. It’s like Platoon meets Jurassic Park, two films I never thought I would see mashed up well. You should see it, too, on the biggest screen you can find; Kong is the biggest and baddest, after all. And don’t leave before the credits are over!

He Hates That I’m a Vegetarian Advice for Athens’ Loose and Lovelorn

By Bonita Applebum advice@flagpole.com I’m a girl and a freshman in college. My boyfriend and I have been together since we were 14, and when I went to college, he did not.

He’s a few hours away back in our hometown, working and taking care of his mom, who has PTSD and can’t work. I think distance makes the heart grow fonder, but he is very unhappy with me being so far away—it’s too far for day trips—and the ways I’ve changed.

The main thing is that he’s really, REALLY rude to me about my recent decision to become a vegetarian. I’ve learned a lot this year about health and animal welfare, and being a vegetarian feels great to me. I’m very happy with this decision, but when I go home each weekend he never stops teasing and harassing me. Sometimes he’s clearly just trying to be funny—like, he’ll suggest Outback Steakhouse for a dinner date—but other times he really challenges me and picks at my resolve. He’ll point out that I have incisors, and talk about evolution and stuff like that.

Sometimes when we’re eating together and he’s having meat, he’ll put some of it in my face as if to offer me a bite. I used to laugh that off, but now it’s really pissing me off. Last time he did that, I didn’t let it go, and we had a pretty serious fight over it. I told him he was acting weird, and I didn’t understand why he cared so much about what I ate. He just says it’s stupid and pointless, and that I’m fighting nature.

We’re back on good terms already, but I can’t let his rudeness go. It’s really bugging me, and I wanna talk to him about it, but he’s such a jerk about this. I love him, but he’s being pretty unforgivable right now. I feel like he’s trying to control me, and I hate that. How can we go forward from here?

He’s definitely trying to control you, and he’s definitely a jerk.

I’m proud of you for growing into yourself and figuring out what’s important to you—having ideals, living them and sticking to them. This guy is attached to the girl you used to be, not the woman you’re becoming. As you continue to age and evolve into your personhood, you’ll be less and less like the teenage version

of yourself. Your boyfriend never left his hometown—or even his mother’s house— and he’s stuck there.

You didn’t mention any other ways that you’ve changed, but you imply that he’s bothered by more than your vegetarianism.

It sounds to me like you two are growing apart. Still, if you think the relationship is worth saving, sit him down and try to have a mature conversation about him respecting your choices and your lifestyle. But if he doesn’t take to that conversation, don’t ignore it. Right now is a very pivotal time in your life, and you have all the potential in the world. Keep moving forward.

Dear Bonita, I have a friend who has some mental health issues—he’s been hospitalized a few times in his life—and we are very close. We talk on the phone all the time—maybe a little too much!

Basically, he calls me every day—sometimes twice a day—just to ramble about this and that, and I know it’s a symptom of his bipolar. I have a job and a family, and I can’t always take his calls, even when I want to. I feel like his psychiatrist sometimes, and I don’t have time for that.

I didn’t hear from him for a while, but then I got an email this weekend saying that he lost my number and would like it back, and I never responded. I feel horrible! But I’ve honestly been loving the peace and the silence.

I wanna be there for him, but I need some time to myself. What should I write back to him?

Sincerely, Reluctant Phone Therapist Therapist, You should write back to him with contact information for free and reduced-cost counseling in his area. You should tell him that you have responsibilities, and you can’t always pick up when he needs you. What he needs is what clinically trained therapists can provide, not you. In Athens, the Samaritan Center (downtown on Lumpkin Street) offers counseling and other therapeutic interventions on a sliding scale, and there are other reduced-cost counseling services dotted all over our great city.

Help him in all the ways you can, like giving him rides to therapy, or even covering the cost if need be. But let him know that you can’t provide your ear so much anymore. You have every right to take that space, and you can still support your friend in need. f Need advice?
