So, there was a standing-room, sit-onthe-floor-up-front crowd Friday night at Ciné to hear citizen activist and former Seattle City Council member Nick Licata talk about how to get effectively involved in making our community better. The crowd was diverse: young, old, black, white, male, female and other. There were around 200 people crammed into the Ciné Lab, but that crowd did not include our mayor and commissioners, except for Melissa Link, who was on the panel that discussed local applications of Licata’s activist advice.

Sure, Friday night is busy, but come on. The boycott by our local government officials looked very much like a put-down of progressive Athens.

Don Trump and Don Corleone Since great art has the power to remain relevant even as societal circumstances change, perhaps it is time yet again to see if The Godfather still makes us an offer we can’t refuse. Is Don Trump Don Corleone?

Don Trump is no Don Corleone.

Both have tight organizations based on self-interest and loyalty. Both are disdainful of public opinion and totally ruthless in getting the results they want. Both strike back hard against their enemies when challenged. Both put family and cronies in charge of their operations. Both are fabulously successful while refusing to play by the rules.

Still, you can’t quite see Corleone tweeting. His rule is don’t get mad, just put the horse head in the bed.

Trump, on the other hand, blabs his anger before he tries to get even, telegraphs his moves. But until we see his tax returns, we have to assume that he has been even more successful than the Sicilian—and of course he flaunts his success much more than those low-key Italians in their compound out in Queens.

Don Trump got out of Queens, and there’s something else about him that doesn’t fit with the godfather. Corleone is cool, understated, determined, deadly.

That’s not Trump. He’s more like, not Michael, but Sonny. Yes, that’s it: Sonny Corleone! Hot-headed, impulsive, ready to strike back when provoked, quick to jump in the car and go beat the hell out of somebody, heedless of the toll he may have to pay—that we all may have to pay—when the machine guns start blasting.

So, yes, it’s time to watch The Godfather again, and thanks to Beechwood Dine-In Cinema’s Flashback Cinema Academy Award Classics, you can watch it on the big screen, where it was meant to be seen.

Beechwood has lined up some of the best classics ever filmed, and they’re showing Wednesdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. both days.

You’ve already missed Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) and the final showing of Aliens (1986) is Wednesday, Jan. 18. Next, on Jan. 22 and 25, they’ve got the incomparable Citizen Kane (1941) named by the American Film Institute as the greatest film ever. That’s because it’s about “a larger than life newspaper publisher who is both loved and hated, and never less than fascinating.” No, it was not filmed here in Athens.

Gone With the Wind (1939) plays Jan. 29 and Feb. 1, The King and I (1956) Feb. 5 and 8 and It Happened One Night (1934) on Feb. 12 and 15. “Frank Capra directed this quintessential romantic comedy about a wealthy socialite (Claudette Colbert) and a wisecracking newspaperman (Clarke Gable)…”

The series ends with multiple bangs as The Godfather (1972) takes the screen on Feb. 19 and 22. If by any chance you’ve never seen it, for God(father)’s sake go see this groundbreaking movie. If you have already seen The Godfather, you know what an opportunity this is to re-enter that world of greed, violence and family values.

When a Fox News reporter asked Donald Trump about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange back in 2010, just after Assange had released a huge cache of secret U.S. diplomatic cables, the reality TV star said,“I think it’s disgraceful. I think there should be, like, the death penalty or something.”

Circumstances change, however, and smart people with big brains know when it’s time to switch sides. It was WikilLeaks, once again, that revealed the hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee that did such damage to Hillary Clinton’s campaign last summer. But Trump now readily accepts Assange’s word that he didn’t get those emails from the Russians.

On the other hand, that happened so long before the actual vote in November that it’s impossible to say if it had any effect on the outcome.

He is questioning the intelligence services’ conclusions about Russian interference because he believes (wrongly) that they undermine the validity of his election victory. Trump has been having a problem with the main U.S. intelligence agencies, which unanimously insist that the Russians did indeed hack the DNC’s emails, and that they passed them to WikiLeaks (through an intermediary) in order to damage Clinton’s presidential campaign. “Putin and the Russian government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump,” as the joint intelligence report put it.

So Trump was very happy to be able to reply (in a tweet, of course) that “Assange… said Russians did not give him the info!”

Well, there is the fact that Assange has been living in one room in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for the past four years in order to avoid being extradited to the United States on espionage charges that could get him up to 45 years in prison.

Donald Trump is the one person who could make all that trouble go away, once he becomes the president, so doing him a favor now might be a wise move.

Moreover, the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are the same organizations that cooked up the evidence for Saddam Hussein’s “weapons of mass destruction” so that President George W. Bush could invade Iraq.

Nevertheless, the U.S. intelligence agencies are probably right to blame their Russian counterparts for the hacks that

though driven by perceived personal interests, is a refreshing break from the usual Washington paranoia.

He said it himself (in another tweet): “Having a good relationship with Russia is a good thing, not a bad thing. Only stupid people or fools would think that it is bad.

We have enough problems around the world without yet another one.”

Vladimir Putin is a player, and sometimes he plays rough, but his recent meddling in the American election is far less than the massive U.S. interference in Russian elections in the 1990s.

In seeking a rapprochement with Moscow, Trump should not make the mistake of accepting Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea. Changing borders by force (even if most of the local population approves of it) has been banned by international law for more than half a century, and we should not start making exceptions to that rule now.

But while the United States never accepted the old Soviet Union’s illegal annexation of the Baltic states in 1940, it did not let that stand in the way of improving the U.S.-Soviet relationship as the Cold War drew to an end.

There is much that the United States and Russia could cooperate on, starting with putting an end to the war in Syria. On this issue, at least, Trump is right and Obama, Clinton and the spooks are wrong. f

Repealing Obamacare More Than 1 Million Georgians Would Lose Coverage

By Tom Crawford tcrawford@gareport.com To get an understanding of the major problem facing state legislators, you have to have been watching a town hall meeting televised on CNN last week.

U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin was fielding questions from the audience when an Arizona businessman named Jeff Jeans challenged him about the move by congressional Republicans to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. Jeans described himself as a lifelong Republican who did not like the ACA when it was passed in 2010. “I told my wife we would close our business before I complied with this law,� he said.

But then, reality intervened. Jeans lost his health insurance when his company filed for bankruptcy. He was subsequently diagnosed with throat cancer, and was unable to get cancer treatments because he didn’t have health coverage.

His situation took a turn for the better when his wife was able to purchase an insurance policy for both of them through the ACA. That enabled him to get badly needed cancer treatments. “Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, I’m standing here today alive,� Jeans told Ryan. “Being both a small-business person and someone with preexisting conditions, I rely on the Affordable Care Act to be able to purchase my own insurance. Why would you repeal the Affordable Care Act without a replacement?�

Despite the objections of Jeans and many others, the Republicans who control the House and Senate are already holding votes to kill Obamacare, which has provided health insurance coverage for more than 20 million Americans. Initial votes were taken last week in both chambers to start the process of repealing the ACA. Georgia senators Johnny Isakson and David Perdue,

as well as all of the state’s Republican House members, voted with their colleagues to get the ball rolling.

Ryan and the GOP leadership claim they will pass a replacement for Obamacare that won’t cost anybody their coverage, but they aren’t being truthful. Congressional Republicans have been unable to come up with an Obamacare replacement for seven years now. Many of those who will be stripped of their health insurance are people who voted for Donald Trump. It’s possible they won’t mind that. There will still be large numbers of people who aren’t quite so enthused about the fact that they no longer have access to health care. Nearly half a million Georgians have enrolled for health coverage through the insurance exchange provided by the ACA. When Obamacare is repealed, those enrollees lose their coverage. The total number of Georgians who lose health insurance coverage could be more than one million, according to estimates by the Urban Institute. That number includes those who are pushed off Medicaid as a result of expected cutbacks.

This becomes a problem for Georgia legislators because their constituents who no longer have health insurance are going to demand that the state do something about it. Hospital emergency rooms will also be flooded by uninsured patients.

The legislative leadership is well aware of this problem. Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle has already appointed a special committee to recommend ways of dealing with the fallout from Obamacare repeal.

I’m not sure how much good that will do.

If Georgia is suddenly forced to take care of 500,000 people who are stripped of their health coverage, it could bust the state’s budget. For now, all you can do is wait and see what happens in Washington. f

Transportation Transformation Plus, the Public Art Master Plan and Dealing With the Next Drought

Flagpole neighbor St. Joseph Catholic Church is relocating to a new location on Epps Bridge Road, and the 100year-old stained glass windows are coming with them. Avery Wooten’s (pictured) Foothill Sand to Glass company of Union Grove, NC removed the large windows panel-by-panel last week. Athens resident Marianne Parr will start work next month on restoring oxidation of the lead borders used in each glass panel. After the lead is replaced, certain sections of the windows will be repainted using melted glass by Parr, who was been restoring stained glass windows for 40 years. “I’ve got about a year of work ahead of me,” Parr said.

“Whenever you put a lot of automobiles in a place where there are a lot of pedestrians, you reduce safety, so we’re trying to get more efficient in moving traffic,” he said.

“If I can move traffic, I make it safer for pedestrians.”

For years, many Athens residents have complained about the difficulty of walking and biking due to fast traffic and lack of infrastructure like sidewalks and bike lanes. But change is coming, Athens-Clarke County transportation officials promised at a Federation of Neighborhoods forum last week.

A committee is currently revising ACC’s bike and pedestrian master plan for the first time in more than 15 years. “That is a major step,” ACC traffic engineer Steve Decker said. “The sidewalk plan is a disaster. The bike plan is archaic. This is a new century, and we need to get in the right century.”

The Transportation and Public Works Department recently revised the formula for prioritizing new sidewalks, but that’s only a stopgap measure until the aforementioned committee completes its work.

At the same time, recommendations from a recently finished transit study will be coming forward this fall, Athens Transit Director Butch McDuffie said.

ACC has a plethora of transportation plans. Besides those for sidewalks, bike facilities and transit, there’s MACORTS, a three-county agency that assists the Georgia Department of Transportation on local state-funded road projects.

Those plans all need to be combined into one master plan showing how they interconnect, panelists agreed. “There has been kind of a silo problem with transportation,” said Alice Kinman, who pushed for a Complete Streets policy as a county commissioner and now chairs the planning commission and a committee that’s recommending projects to fund with a 1 percent sales tax on the ballot in November. “It has improved, thanks to the efforts of people like Butch and Steve.”

In the past, transportation has been a tough topic politically because local elected

are allowed to cross. “The pedestrian has no chance against a vehicle, so you get them out of the way,” Decker said.

“If you want to move people more efficiently, you put them on a bus or a bike in a bike lane or a [separated] bike path,” BikeAthens Executive Director Tyler Dewey said. “If you want to slow traffic down, you

put [cyclists] in the middle of a lane where they can take the lane and should do so, legally.”

Dewey is serving on the bike/ped master plan committee. “I think it’s going to be very transformative, but we have to find a way to pay for those projects that come out,” he said.

T-SPLOST—projected to raise more than $100 million over five years for transportation—would be a big help. But the state law authorizing local governments to raise sales taxes for transportation has been interpreted to say that the money can’t be spent on operating costs. ACC could use it to buy buses, but not to pay drivers.

ACC could devote more general-fund (read: property tax) revenue to transit, McDuffie said. The local government could lobby the state legislature to allow ACC to spend sales tax on operations, which MARTA does but no other system in the state is allowed to do. Cities in other states tack a surcharge onto water bills or car-tag fees to fund transit. “Those are policy decisions that have to be made above the level of staff,” McDuffie said.

Athens Transit goes after grants “aggressively,” McDuffie said. T-SPLOST’s five-year sunset is unhelpful in that regard, because the feds want locals to have a 20-year funding source to match federal grants, he said. And federal funding for passenger rail mostly goes to big cities.

“The state’s pulling in a lot of money” from a gas-tax overhaul in 2014, “and honestly, most of it’s going to roads,” McDuffie said. Georgia funded transit for the first time last year, when Gov. Nathan Deal doled out $75 million in grants. (Athens Transit won $6 million to buy hybrid buses, which are on order, but the manufacturer has a backlog, McDuffie said.)

Decker described ACC’s relationship with GDOT as much improved, though. The state agency recently gave the local government $300,000 worth of fiber, is synchronizing lights on Atlanta Highway for the first time and is more willing than ever to install sidewalks on state highways, he said.

“I think we’re in a new era in AthensClarke County,” Decker said. “It should have started five years ago, but we’re getting there. We’re headed in the right direction.”

Murals and Money “People recognize Athens as a very creative community,” consultant Todd Bressi told commissioners at a work session last week. “People think public art should make Athens look the way it feels.”

In an update on the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission’s public art master plan, Bressi endorsed the downtown master plan’s “art walk” of temporary installations from the Lyndon House down Jackson Street. He also proposed a permanent “urban cultural trail” downtown, modeled on one in Asheville, NC, as well as more money for artist-designed bus shelters, which he described as “hugely popular.”

Bressi couched his ideas in terms of tourism and economic development, noting that The New York Times named Greenville, SC one of 52 places to visit this year on the strength of its cuisine, riverwalk and public art. “You’ve got the food. You’re getting the trails,” he said. “You get the art, you’ll have a lot more than Greenville.”

Other recommendations include hiring paid staff for the all-volunteer ACAC, more small grants for artists, assisting businesses with murals and requiring developers to meet with the ACAC to discuss public-art opportunities, although public art in new developments wouldn’t be mandatory.

Funding could come from ACC’s tax on hotel and motel rooms, he said.

A Reservoir by Any Other Name Last year, environmental advocates successfully fought to have a potential new reservoir removed from ACC’s 20-year water and sewer plan, citing their inefficiency and the damage they can do to river ecosystems.

Now, the reservoir is coming back—but in

a very different form than the one commissioners earlier rejected.

Since the drought of 2007–2008, ACC’s water use has declined from about 20 million gallons per day to about 14, 28 percent less than a decade ago. That’s great, but it also means that, when the next severe drought hits, the go-to move of banning outdoor watering won’t make as big of a difference—only about a 13 percent reduction, which might not be enough, Water Conservation Coordinator Marilyn Hall said at the work session. A PUD analysis found a 50 percent chance that Athens’ emergency water supply, Bear Creek Reservoir in Jackson County, will be overtaxed at some point in the next 30 years. A year-long severe drought resulting in a water shortage could cost the Athens economy $244 million and 4,000 lost jobs, according to the PUD study.

“What would really help is a rawwater facility capable of meeting a 20 mgd demand, and don’t freak out when we talk about this,” Hall said.

The reservoir the Public Utilities Department is now proposing would hold “clean effluent” for “indirect potable reuse,” Hall said. Rather than releasing treated sewage back into rivers, sewage treatment plants could pump it into a new reservoir (location TBD). During droughts, this water could be pumped back to the drinkingwater treatment plant or to local factories through an all-new set of “purple pipes” for reuse in industrial processes. Some communities, such as Gwinnett County, are already doing this, Hall said.

“This reuse can really help with our peak demand for drinking water when our rivers are lowest and demand is highest,” she said. f

the U.S. were a foreign country, I’d be wondering how long before Donald Trump is ousted from power. The normally air-tight secrecy of the Central Intelligence Agency appears to have sprouted a faucet that drips allegations against the incoming president, leading Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald to describe the CIA and intelligence community’s “open warfare against the duly elected and already widely disliked president-elect.” Foreign targets of the CIA don’t tend to last long in office. Ask Iran. Ask Guatemala. Ask Chile.

You’ve no doubt heard some of the allegations, which range from rumors of video of Trump getting kinky in Moscow hotel rooms to tales of Trump’s collusion with the Putin regime in Russia. The leaks contribute to a hardening narrative of Putin and Trump in conspiracy, corroborating revelations of almost-certain hacking by Russian operatives last summer to weaken the Clinton campaign against Trump.

It soon became conventional wisdom among many that the allegations were fabricated, and everyone was merry and we joked about how silly it was that the heads of the CIA and the NSA, along with the Director of National Intelligence, who sits above those agency chiefs, were peddling such total falsehoods. And, LOL, the bumble bunch even clumsily let the most salacious and treasonous allegations spill out over the entire internet.

But if you, like me and so many others, came so quickly to regard allegations of Trump’s “perverted sexual acts” in a Moscow hotel while being darkly “cultivated” by the Kremlin as laughably erroneous, why were they not summarily regarded as such by likely scores of intelligence officers with decades of experience? Why did they take such absurd allegations, which we all claim to have almost immediately recognized as bunk, to President Obama and President-elect Trump and then, it appears, let them be leaked to the public?

What initially might feel like relief—that the incoming president isn’t a carefully cultivated Trojan horse of Putin’s and can’t be blackmailed with video of him wilding out with Russian prostitutes—doesn’t feel like relief when you realize that the reason we’re hearing such unbelievable claims is because the CIA effectively decided we should. Dubious intelligence that should’ve been quashed if it couldn’t be properly vetted ended up spread everywhere to weaken a president they clearly don’t like. Listen, I hate and fear Trump too, but I’d rather have a duly elected president than a subversion of democracy by unelected deep-state spooks. [Matthew Pulver]

Rap's Battle For the Athens Hip-Hop Community, Music Is Politics

A

fter eight years of political languor during the Obama presidency, many Athens progressives found themselves organizationally naked against the harsh political winds that began blowing in on election night, and unprepared for what might come. A sudden, desperate scrambling followed, a rush to assemble structures of solidarity, activism and defense. But for Montu Miller and other members of Athens’ hip-hop activist community, the mission remains much the same as before Election Day.

“Hip hop’s always been political,” says Miller. As a new student at UGA in 1999, Miller helped form the Dreaded Mindz Family, a seminal hub of Athens hip hop and activism. Two of hip hop’s foundational components were at work: It’s political, and it also relies on an essential sense of place. The flip side of repping your city is caring about your city.

Miller and others in Dreaded Mindz, many of them students or transplants, developed an ethos to counter the ills of a city largely at the mercy of transient students. “We refused to come into this town and just leech,” Miller says.

Mokah Johnson echoes Miller. “We’re trying to be proactive, not reactive,” says Johnson, who, with her husband Knowa, helped lead last year’s fight for an anti-discrimination ordinance. “Right now, I’m not worried about Trump.

Regardless of who’s in office, it hasn’t made much difference in the African-American community. No matter who’s in office, even Obama, we’re still suffering.”

“It wasn’t a surprise when he won,” says rapper Ishmael “Ishues” Cuthbertson, one of Athens’ hip hop’s most famous sons. He recognizes the singular danger of Trump, but he’s not surprised at Trump’s successful appeal to white fear, resentment and anger.

Following the election, these black hip-hop activists did not feel the same shock as many white liberals. It might be that Trump’s success, founded largely on racialized politics, is a surprise only to those free to live in ignorance of persistent racism. The warm safety of political hibernation remains a retreat largely reserved for white folks.

After many of the core Dreaded Mindz members committed themselves to Athens, the seeds planted by the group grew and flourished. Cuthbertson soon rocketed to success, touring the U.S. and Africa with his mentor, political rap icon KRS-One. In turn, Cuthbertson influenced upand-coming Athens rappers such as Yung’N Restless, whose trenchant political rap can be seen as a direct descendant of Ishues’.

A self-described “nerdy” Eagle Scout still in high school, young Tommy Valentine (or YT, as he then called himself), started tagging along with Dreaded Mindz in 2000 and soon became a battle-rap sensation. But perhaps more importantly, his tutelage under Miller, Cuthbertson and Lemuel “Life the Griot” LaRoche set Valentine on his way to the political life he now pursues as a PhD student in public administration and policy at UGA. Valentine was recently elected vice chairman of the Athens-Clarke County Democratic Party, and there is whispering among observers of Athens politics that he may bring what he learned from the hip-hop community to a run for local office.

Hooking up with Miller and Dreaded Mindz “began one of the most pivotal periods of mentorship in my life,” says Valentine. In addition to honing mic skills, members were encouraged to be active in catalyzing positive change. “It was very much a crash course in community organizing,” remembers Valentine, who would later apply those skills to managing a Democratic congressional candidate in 2008, Bobby Saxon. “Hip hop taught me [how] to inclusively lead a large group of people, and how to energize them behind a cause,” says Valentine.

“I’m an activist who just happens to rap a bit/ An advocate of action against the factions that trapped us here,” raps Cuthbertson on the 2007 Ishues track “Let It Build.” In the Athens hip-hop community, the lines often blur between artist and activist, promoter and politician, rapper and radical. “I gotta live what I’m saying,” says Cuthbertson. “I have to live what I’m talking about.”

The Johnsons, who moved to Athens in 2012, quickly integrated themselves into the hip-hop scene, which meant they soon became active in local politics and activism. The two “hip-hop entrepreneurs” became “hip-hop activists,” says Mokah, when their downtown promotion business (the two founded the Athens Hip Hop Awards) melded with a burgeoning movement among students of color who claimed to have been discriminated against by clubs and bars downtown. Mokah quickly became a leader of the movement.

The movement scored a victory in early November, achieving the bulk of their demands, including an ordinance aimed at addressing racial discrimination in downtown bars and a human relations committee, the initial step toward a body dedicated to enforcing the ordinance. The victory marked an early achievement in what appears to be a political awakening in Athens, and continues the tradition set

by Miller, Cuthbertson, LaRoche and others for whom the hip-hop ethos compels attention to the conditions where you live, regardless of where you’re from.

The current movement sees newcomers and students joining forces with veterans like Cuthbertson, who recently returned to the mic after years off to raise his family. “I feel obligated to come back out with new music, because times are more tumultuous now than they were when I was coming out,” he says. Valentine, once the young battle rapper, is now heavily involved in local politics. Miller continues to shepherd young rappers like Squalle, Blacknerdninja and Yung’N Restless, all artists with “conscious” dimensions to their music.

What’s still missing, though, is steady and sturdy cooperation and communication between Athens’ hip-hop activist community and white progressives, as well as between the hip-hop and rock scenes in town.

“There’s still too much separation between the white community and the black community,” says Cuthbertson.

“There’s still a huge, huge separation.” Mokah describes “an invisible line” that continues to divide Athens, even its progressive community. The anti-discrimination movement demonstrated the power of cross-community alliance, and one hopes that success presages more such unions, as the next four years are sure to bring pressures to Athens that can only be met with unified effort and action. f

He’s got a new ensemble named Toro that’s working on a debut EP and will hit the stage mid-to-late February. In related news, Hembree and bandmate Pablo Davila will perform as a duo named—wait for it—Hembree & Davila, opening for Scott Kelly (Neurosis, Tribes of Neurot, Blood and Time, Shrinebuilder) when he plays a special acoustic show in Atlanta on Feb. 22 at Smith’s Olde Bar. AHOY: With its third release since September, Future Ape Tapes seems to be on a roll that’s unprecedented in its 11-year history. This newest two-track album, with a running time of 53 minutes, is titled Deep Leaks. It appears to be inspired by E. E. Cummings’ poem “The Eagle,� and, like several recordings from the group, is best experienced with headphones. Maybe I’m being unduly influenced by its title and track names (“Lake One� and “Lake Two�), but there does seem to be something watery about this.

Both tracks are pretty linear, and there’s a musicality here that supersedes its obvious nods to noise and disorder. Overall, it’s more meditation than menace, and you can check it out at futureapetapes.bandcamp.com.

Two Films for the Post-Truth Era A John Carpenter Classic and a Nixon Doc Are All Too Relevant

If Trump has dragged us into the “post-truth� era, perhaps fiction can provide the best tools for coping with the next four years. The Washington Street Liberation Army, a local grassroots organization founded after the 2008 election but largely inactive of late, returns to present an Inauguration Day screening of the John Carpenter classic They Live, as well as a reunion set from “animation-pop� band The Buddy System. “After this election, it became clear that people needed something to rally around, as a way to feel like they’re helping their community,� says WSLA founder and The Buddy System member Ryan Lewis. Proceeds from Friday’s concert and screening will benefit the Magnolia Fund, a local abortion-access nonprofit.

Spectacle is also key to the film’s signature scene. After discovering the sunglasses’ eye-opening properties, Nada seeks to share this boon with Armitage, who refuses to put on the glasses. As they argue, the two trade punches, kicks and bodyslams in staged combat that would have been right at home in Piper’s WWF day job. The fight is memorable for its six-minute runtime, but there is an indescribable joy in seeing a Juilliard-trained actor like David take a back suplex like a pro. Carpenter creates amazing visuals with little more than two grizzled actors and an L.A. alley.

The title comes from graffiti in a rebel group’s headquarters: “They Live We Sleep.� While the Trump Administration will be the bane of all that is logical, films like They Live help ensure that we do not remain asleep to that threat.

Horror auteur Carpenter’s They Live (1988) follows late wrestling legend “Rowdy� Roddy Piper as drifter John Nada, who arrives in Los Angeles seeking work after losing his job in Denver. Nada soon befriends underemployed construction worker Frank Armitage (Keith David). Our hero eventually stumbles upon magic sunglasses that let him see that the businessmen, police and politicians who control society are members of an evil alien race. As declared in the film’s most quoted scene, Nada’s mission following this discovery is simple: “I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I’m all out of bubblegum.�

The mysterious alien overlords are an uncanny mirror of Trump and his cronies described as “free enterprisers.�

To them, “Earth is just another developing planet: their Third World.� Instead of pursuing the anal probes common to most aliens in film, they are simply capitalists, aiming to drain every bit of profit out of the planet that they can.

While the antagonists were originally meant as a criticism of Reagan’s America, it’s easy to see the parallels with an administration so focused on business and oblivious to the big picture that it appoints a climate-change denier to head the Environmental Protection Agency.

Aside from its newfound resonance, They Live remains a testament to Carpenter’s skill at crafting potent visual spectacle on a shoestring budget. Shots from Nada’s point of view filtered through his special sunglasses have an aesthetic that makes potentially boring images fascinating.

Color drains from the streets and people of Los Angeles, presenting the viewer with black-and-white images. The laughable cheapness of the makeup and animatronics that give life to the aliens turns to menace when this otherworldly sheen is applied.

Director Penny Lane’s documentary Our Nixon (2013) has a unique relationship with truth that highlights the dangers of normalizing an abnormal president. Our Nixon details the story of the Nixon Administration—from the president’s 1969 inauguration to his resignation in 1974— drawing primarily from over 500 reels of home video that Nixon aides John Ehrlichman, H.R. Haldeman and Dwight Chapin (all of whom went to prison for their parts in the Watergate break-in) captured on Super 8 cameras.

Lane frames the home videos in a way that portrays Nixon as a sitcom hero, starting with the sitcom-style credits, which let us know that the film will be “starring�

Richard Nixon. The curved edges common to Super 8 images also lend the appearance of being viewed through a classic television screen. A repetitious, “Welcome Back, Kotter�-esque piano score seeks to compound the portrayal.

By painting Nixon as a TV star, Lane shows the normalizing power of television to make hateful ideas and actions palatable to viewers, a tool Trump used to his advantage throughout 14 seasons of “The Apprentice.�

However, Nixon’s secret audio recordings of private conversations and phone calls remind the viewer that the president was indeed a toxic individual. The selected audio showcases Nixon’s homophobia, insecure demands for praise and Machiavellian scheming against his own allies. This technique serves as a relevant warning that just because a hateful ideology receives a familiar gloss, it is not, should not and will never be acceptable. f

As the tagline says, “Joe was once a good man.� Now, he’s a rumrunner trying to control central Florida’s bootlegging operation for a Boston godfather. He must negotiate the law, the Irish mob and even the KKK (apparently, one positive of 1920s organized crime is their wiping out the Klan) if he wants to live in happiness with his gorgeous Cuban wife, Graciela (Zoe Saldana).

Affleck lacks his usual charisma; he’s still stuck in glum Bruce Wayne mode. He merely looms like a bespoke, fedora-wearing Frankenstein’s monster who occasionally smiles. Maybe Dennis Lehane’s novel offered a fresher take on this criminal tale, but Affleck’s Live by Night fails to find anything new to say to viewers already sated by The Godfather, “Boardwalk Empire� or even Scarface.

The climactic bloodbath does contain one marvelous nod to De Palma. Sadly, that high note made me wish for more creative moments like it, and less that seemed like a 1920s episode of “Miami Vice.� f

I Can’t Stand My Office-mate Advice for Athens’ Loose and Lovelorn

I share a small room with an extremely grumpy old white woman who hates her husband, coddles her adult son and makes racist remarks about her daughterin-law, who is not white. She also makes remarks about her biracial grandchildren and how she resents that they are bilingual.

She has worked in her department for almost 20 years, and I realize that she has a solo office because most of the other staff find her to be extremely unpleasant, and no one wants to be stuck in a room with her all day.

But what about me? Honestly, being in the office with her absolutely SUCKS! I feel that I really don’t have much support, since I’m a graduate student, but I really don’t want to be in an office with this woman for another semester.

I go to UGA, and before Christmas break I started dating a guy that works at a restaurant downtown. It wasn’t that serious—we’d mainly see each other after his shift ended and sometimes get breakfast in the morning, but other than that, we never really saw each other in the daytime. I went home for the break, though, and since getting back, I haven’t been able to get in touch with him. I only have his phone number, and he hasn’t responded to any of the text messages I’ve sent.

I’d like to continue what we were doing before the break, just as casual as it was before, but I worry that he thinks me reaching out again is some kind of sign that I want something more serious, and that’s why he’s ignoring me. How hard should I work for this casual hookup? I’m considering just going to his job and asking him why he’s being such a weenie and avoiding me.

There’s really nothing you can do about her job performance from your position, except maybe mentioning it to your superior when you see her doing things that are grossly unprofessional or against policy.

Continue to intervene when you see her putting undergrads through the ringer.

That’s just unacceptable behavior.

Make your own decision on how to address her racism, but I’d recommend calling her out so often that she becomes afraid to even talk that crap around you. She doesn’t have to like you. I know the semester just started, but remember that you only have to be around this woman until May. In the future, ask around before you accept an assistantship. Get the gossip on who’s a nightmare, and avoid them.

He seems like the type that only digs a casual situation when it’s on his terms. Most dudes love a lady who says “yes” to them at the end of the night, but they can’t respect a woman who would make the same offer.

It’s classic double-standard behavior.

Even in casual situations, we’re supposed to present ourselves as virtuous. When you reach out to him for sex, you’re showing that you’re just as confident and slutty as he is. You’re not some last-call angel who saves him from the whiskey-scented morning. You are confident and empowered, and you’re keeping him in your life for a superficial, selfish and mutually-agreed-upon reason. You shattered the illusion.

So, be confident and slutty. This guy’s ship has sailed. Delete his number, and find a cooler and more feminist dude to bone for the spring semester. f
