How Trump Won A UGA Professor Explains It. Plus, New Developments and More Local News

By Blake Aued news@flagpole.com Last month, political scientists John Sides of George Washington University and Lynn Vavreck of UCLA came to the Russell Library to give a presentation on their statistical analysis of the 2016 election. Vavreck and Sides come from a school of thought that believes election results are largely predetermined—that they can be predicted with great accuracy simply by plugging economic conditions and whether the incumbent is on the ballot into a formula.

The writing partners nailed it in 2012. This year, with no incumbent on the ballot and an economy that’s growing but slowly, their model predicted a tossup. Other similar models said the same, or gave Donald Trump a slight edge by virtue of being from the opposite party as the sitting president.

At the time, though, Hillary Clinton was up about 5 or 6 points in the polls, and Sides and Vavreck didn’t believe their own model. As they explained, Trump had virtually no campaign infrastructure, such as field offices; was being badly out-fundraised by Clinton; and was making the mistake of doubling down on a shrinking sector of the electorate (white people) at the expense of offending the growing minority population. Sides even Paul Gurian said he couldn’t envision anything happening to change the dynamics of the race enough for Trump to win—and this was before the “Access Hollywood” tape leaked.

They should have stuck with the models, which recently-retired UGA political science professor Paul Gurian acknowledges are usually accurate, even though he’s from the school of thought that campaigns matter. Gurian walked the audience through the election during a presentation at the Athens library last week sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

“This is the most unusual campaign I can remember,” Gurian said in what must be an early contender for understatement of the century. “This one broke the norms and

expectations of political scientists and other experts.”

Generally, in primaries, to start there are one or two frontrunners with high name recognition and a bunch of longshots, Gurian said. The frontrunner will stumble and a challenger will emerge from the pack, but ultimately the frontrunner will prevail with more money and better organization. That’s what happened in the Democratic primary this year—but not on the Republican side.

There was no frontrunner on the GOP side this year, because 2012 nominee Mitt Romney opted not to run. He and another well funded candidate, Jeb Bush, would’ve cleared the field, Gurian said. Instead, the media latched onto Trump because he was already well known as a celebrity businessman and reality TV star. Trump received more coverage than all the other candidates combined—the equivalent to $3 billion in advertising, Gurian said.

He stayed in the news by making controversial statements and bullying his opponents, who were unprepared to respond because they were used to obeying President Reagan’s 11th Commandment: “Thou shalt not speak ill of fellow Republicans.”

The GOP establishment’s No. 1 choice, Bush, faltered in the debates, and the No. 2 choice, Sen. Marco Rubio, also suffered a gaffe just before the New Hampshire vote. By the time the establishment—elected officials, party fixtures and big donors—overcame their distaste for Sen. Ted Cruz and united behind him, Trump had already all but clinched the nomination.

The Republican convention was “not good,” Gurian said—few major figures spoke, and Trump’s speech was largely negative—but he got a four-point bump in the polls, essentially pulling into a tie. Clinton, though, jumped eight points after the Democratic convention, netting a four-point lead. That lead dwindled soon after, though, as a case of pneumonia brought negative attention and the Wikileaks scandal broke.

“Clinton had a very effective first debate, or to put it more precisely, Trump had a terrible first debate,” Gurian said. She appeared calm, experienced and knowledgeable, and got under Trump’s skin. But by that point, 90 percent of voters had made up their minds.

On Oct. 7, the “Access Hollywood” tape featuring Trump bragging about sexual assault broke. “That hurt Trump, but it didn’t hurt him that much,” Gurian said. “Almost everyone had made up their minds by then.”

The third debate was a draw, according to Gurian, except for Trump saying he might not accept the results of the election. That was a big deal among pundits, but maybe not voters. “I don’t think most people noticed or cared that much,” he said. “Compared to other things Trump said, it seemed like small potatoes.”

Then FBI Director James Comey announced he was reopening the investigation into Clinton’s emails, and the polls tightened again. “Rationally, if you look at it, there really wasn’t any news there—‘We might have something that may be related,’” Gurian said. “But it fed into the narrative: ‘You see, she is guilty of something.’ By the time Comey said ‘never mind,’ everyone had either already voted or made up their mind.”

On Election Day, Clinton was up about 3 percent in the polls, and every projection gave her at least 272 electoral votes—enough to win. Although Clinton wound up losing the election, except for Midwestern states, the polls were accurate, Gurian said. She won the popular vote by 1 percent, so the national polls were two points off, which is about average. “But you don’t notice it unless it flips the results,” he said.

High turnout among rural, uneducated whites helped Trump. “They got themselves to the polls,” Gurian said.

“They were really motivated.” But turnout among African Americans and Latinos who usually vote Democratic was down.

In the wake of the loss, Gurian said he expects the Democratic Party to move to the left, toward Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. “That’s what millennials want, and there are now more millennials in the voting population than baby boomers,” he said.

As for the Trump administration, Gurian predicted that the new president will often find himself at odds with the GOP-controlled Congress, and that rifts within the Republican Party—the religious, fiscally conservative, libertarian and tea party wings—will worsen. “Governing under those conditions… I think is going to be extremely difficult,” Gurian said.

time, the state Department of Transportation, which controls that stretch of Prince, said vehicles couldn’t exit onto Prince because the sight lines were obstructed by cars parked on the street. Now, a solution has surfaced: removing six parking spaces from Prince, allowing cars to both enter and exit there. In return, the developer, John Barrett, has offered public parking in the deck. “If things go as planned, it should divert a lot of that traffic onto Prince Avenue,� Athens-Clarke County Commissioner Melissa Link said at the Nov. 15 agenda-setting meeting. But “there are still a few questions that have to be answered,� she said, such as whether the commitment to provide public parking would continue under a new owner if the building is ever sold. The commission will vote on the plan Tuesday, Dec. 6.

More Development News: A Birmingham developer is eying a small tract on Oconee Street near The Mark for a mixeduse development that would include about 80 apartments with 160–175 bedrooms, the Athens Banner-Herald reported last week, quoting real estate agent Jay Boswell. The project is in the downtown historic district, and it won approval from the ACC Historic Preservation Commission Nov. 16.

Meanwhile, Karl Barnett and Todd Burton are moving forward with plans for the old cotton mill on Pulaski Street.

Those plans include renovating and adding onto the mill, which will become retail, office and restaurant space, as well as two new buildings on the property with ground-floor commercial space and two stories of apartments (a total of 21 units) above.

HIV Grant: Local nonprofit Advantage Behavioral Health Systems recently received a $1.4 million federal grant to start a substance abuse treatment program for AfricanAmerican women who have or are at risk of contracting HIV. Advantage and its partners—Live Forward (formerly AIDS Athens), the Athens Nurses Clinic and the Ryan White Specialty Care Clinic—have identified 200 potential clients who are not receiving services. During the threeyear grant period, Advantage expects to provide HIV and hepatitis B and C testing, education and outreach for 2,250 people and substance abuse treatment for 96.

Advantage also recently held a summit focused on youth mental health issues, and will be opening a $400,000 “clubhouse� called Remix in Bogart next month to provide help for kids with mental health disorders in collaboration with the UGA Environmental Science Department and Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Entrepreneur Grants: Nedza’s Waffles—a pop-up started by a UGA student previously profiled on our Grub Notes blog—won a $5,000 grant from UGA, the local tech incubator Four Athens and a corporate partner last week. Fortyfive teams applied for the Idea Accelerator Grant. Finalists included Downtown Canvas, a peer-to-peer art marketplace; VitaBink, a medicinal delivery system for infants; and Reservoir, a soil-moisture monitoring system. The Drought’s Back: That last one should come in handy, as Gov. Nathan Deal recently placed Athens-Clarke and dozens of other counties under outdoor watering restrictions because of a worsening drought. In a Level 2 drought, residents can only water outdoors two days per week— Wednesdays and Saturdays for those with even-numbered addresses, and Thursdays and Saturdays for those with oddnumbered addresses. Watering is only allowed before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m. to minimize evaporation. In addition, water for fountains must be shut off, washing hard surfaces like sidewalks and driveways is banned, and cars can only be washed at commercial car washes.

Deal has also banned fireworks because they could easily spark a fire in such dry conditions, so keep that in mind as you’re making New Year’s Eve plans. f

Georgia Is Still Red Demographics Change, but Results Stay the Same

By Tom Crawford tcrawford@gareport.com One of the most definitive results of this election night was the overwhelming rejection of Gov. Nathan Deal’s “Opportunity School District” involving a state takeover of low-performing schools.

This was an issue where Republicans and Democrats found common ground.

Democratic-leaning counties that contained low-performing schools subject to takeover such as Fulton, DeKalb and Clayton voted strongly against the amendment. What was amazing was the rejection of the Deal takeover plan among solidly Republican counties that had voted twice to elect him as governor. Republican metro Atlanta counties like Cherokee, Forsyth, Fayette, Paulding, Coweta and Hall voted against Amendment 1. That same level of opposition also cropped up in virtually every county outside the metro area. Just a random look at the results shows the amendment losing in counties like Clarke, Jackson, Dawson, Barrow, Rabun and Oglethorpe.

The voters spoke loudly and clearly.

When it comes to running their own schools, they believe in local control.

The election returns also indicated that despite the long-running speculation that Georgia might be on the way to becoming a “blue” state or a “purple” state, it still remains very much a “red” state. The speculation is stoked by the very real trend that the percentage of white registered voters is slowly but steadily decreasing while the percentage of black, Latino and Asian voters increases.

This trend affected some Atlanta-area counties with a long history of voting Republican that went for the Democrat in this presidential election. Cobb voted for Mitt Romney by 38,000 votes in 2012, but went for Hillary Clinton by a 7,000-vote

margin. Gwinnett flipped from supporting Romney by 27,000 to supporting Clinton by 19,000. Henry went for Romney by 3,000 votes four years ago, but flipped to giving Clinton a 4,000-vote advantage.

Those are significant changes and reflect the growing diversity of those counties’ populations. But in other metro counties like Hall, Forsyth, Coweta, Paulding and Cherokee, the margin of support for the Republican presidential candidate was about the same this year as it was in the last presidential election.

The same trend held on a statewide level.

In 2008, John McCain carried Georgia by a margin of 204,636 votes over Barack Obama. The percentage split was 52-47.

Eight years later, Donald Trump carried Georgia by a margin of 211,151 votes over Hillary Clinton. The percentage split was 51-46. Despite the loss of thousands of white voters and the addition of many nonwhite voters during that eight-year period, the Republican presidential candidate actually carried Georgia by a slightly larger number of raw votes this time around. The percentage difference was about the same at five points.

Republicans also maintained their control over state government. Every statewide elected officer is a Republican and the GOP holds close to a two-thirds advantage in both chambers of the General Assembly.

The explanation for this is simple. In Georgia, as in other states, white voters usually do a better job of turning out on election day. The more the percentage of non-white voters increases, the more determined white voters are to get out and vote.

That makes a big difference, especially in off-year elections. That’s why Georgia will likely continue to be a red state for the next few election cycles. f

Avoiding a Climate Change Catastrophe

President Trump Will Reverse Progress, but Cities and Individuals Can Still Act

If

President-elect Donald Trump actually believes all the warnings he issued during the election about the threats of immigration, he should be talking about ways to slow global warming as well. Rising sea level, caused by the melting of the Antarctic and Greenland ice caps, will probably displace tens of millions of people in the decades ahead, and many may come to North America as refugees.

Climate change will cause a suite of other problems for future generations to tackle, and it’s arguably the most pressing issue of our time. Last December, world leaders gathered in Paris to discuss strategies for curbing greenhouse gas emissions, and scientists everywhere confirm that humans are facing a crisis.

However, climate change is being nearly ignored by American politicians and lawmakers. It was not discussed in depth at all during this past election cycle’s televised presidential debates. And when climate change does break the surface of public discussion, it polarizes Americans like almost no other political issue. Some conservatives, including Trump, still deny there’s even a problem.

“We are in this bizarre political state in which most of the Republican Party still thinks it has to pretend that climate change is not real,” says Jonathan F.P. Rose, a New York City developer and author of The WellTempered City, which explores in part how low-cost green development can mitigate the impacts of rising global temperatures and changing weather patterns.

Rose says progress cannot be made in drafting effective climate strategies until national leaders agree there’s an issue.

“We have such strong scientific evidence,” he says. “We can disagree on how we’re going to solve the problems, but I would hope we could move toward an agreement on the basic facts.”

That such a serious planetwide crisis has become a divide across the American political battlefield “is a tragedy” to Peter Kalmus, an earth scientist with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Caltech in Pasadena, who makes clear he is speaking on his own behalf (not on behalf of NASA, JPL or Caltech). Kalmus warns that climate change is happening whether politicians want to talk about it or not.

Slowing climate change will be essential, since adapting to all its effects may be impossible. Governments must strive for greater resource efficiency, shift to renewable energy and transition from conventional to more sustainable agricultural practices.

America’s leaders must also implement a carbon pricing system, climate activists say, that places a financial burden on fossil fuel producers and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. But there may be little to no hope that such a system will be installed at the federal level as Trump prepares to move into the White House. Trump has actually threatened to reverse any commitments the United States agreed to in Paris. According

to widely circulating reports, Trump has even selected a well-known skeptic of climate change, Myron Ebell, to head his U.S. Environmental Protection Agency transition team. Ebell is the director of the Center for Energy and Environment at the Competitive Enterprise Institute.

Steve Valk, communications director for the Citizens’ Climate Lobby, says the results of the presidential election come as a discouraging setback in the campaign to slow emissions and global warming.

“There’s no doubt that the steep hill we’ve been climbing just became a sheer cliff,” he says. “But cliffs are scalable.”

Valk says the American public must demand that Congress implement carbon pricing. He says the government is not likely to face and attack climate change unless voters force them to.

“The solution is going to have to come from the people,” he says. “Our politicians have shown that they’re just not ready to implement a solution on their own.”

After Paris There is no question Earth is warming rapidly, and already this upward temperature trend is having impacts. It is disrupting agriculture. Glacial water sources are vanishing. Storms and droughts are becoming more severe. Altered winds and ocean currents are impacting marine ecosystems.

So is ocean acidification, another outcome of carbon dioxide emissions. The sea is rising, and eventually will swamp large coastal regions and islands. As many as 200 million

people could be displaced by 2050. For several years in a row now, each year has been warmer than any year prior in recorded temperature records, and by 2100 it may be too hot for people to permanently live in the Persian Gulf.

World leaders and climate activists made groundbreaking progress toward slowing these effects at the Paris climate conference.

Here, leaders from 195 countries drafted a plan of action to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and steer the planet off its predicted course of warming. The pact, which addresses energy, transportation, industries and agriculture—and asks leaders to regularly upgrade their climate policies—is intended to keep the planet from warming by 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit between pre-industrial years and the end of this century. Scientists have forecasted that an average global increase of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit will have devastating consequences for humanity.

The United States pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 26 percent from 2005 levels within a decade. China, Japan and nations of the European Union made similar promises. More recently, almost 200 nations agreed to phase out hydrofluorocarbons, extremely potent but short-lived greenhouse gases emitted by refrigerators and air conditioners, and reduce the emissions from the shipping and aviation industries.

But in the wake of such promising international progress, and as 2016 draws to a close as the third record-warm year in a row, many climate activists are disconcerted both by United States leaders’ recent silence

Researchers have estimated that unsustainable farming practices have caused as much as 80 percent of the world’s soil carbon to turn into carbon dioxide.

By carbon farming, those who produce the world’s food can simultaneously turn their land into precious carbon sinks. The basic tenets of carbon farming include growing trees as windbreaks and focusing on perennial crops, like fruit trees and certain specialty grain varieties, which demand less tilling and disturbance of the soil.

Eric Toensmeier, a senior fellow with the climate advocacy group Project Drawdown and the author of The Carbon Farming Solution, says many other countries are far ahead of the United States in both recognizing the importance of soil as a place to store carbon and funding programs that help conventional farmers shift toward carbon farming practices. France, for instance, initiated a sophisticated program in 2011 that calls for increasing soil carbon worldwide by 0.4 percent every year. Healthy soil can contain 10 percent carbon or more, and France’s program has the potential over time to decelerate the increase in atmospheric carbon levels.

Toensmeier is optimistic about the progress being made in the United States, too.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture funds programs that support environmentally friendly farming practices that protect watersheds or enhance wildlife habitat, largely through planting perennial grasses and trees.

“And it turns out a lot of the practices they’re paying farmers to do to protect water quality or slow erosion also happen to sequester carbon,” Toensmeier says.

He says it appears obvious that the federal government is establishing a system by which they will eventually pay farmers directly to sequester carbon. Such a direct face-off with climate change, however, may be a few years away still. Climate activists may even need to wait until 2021. k continued on next page

Tour Reveals Surprising Facts About the Cobbham Historic District

The history of Cobbham as being home to many wealthy Athenians, many of whom served in various roles of the Confederacy, has also lent itself to strange, yet perhaps fitting, designs. In Cobbham, couriers have discovered the perplexing name-changing of Chase Street to Prince Place for one block, then back to Chase Street. On the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation’s final historic walking tour of the year, O’Looney led a group through the winding streets of Cobbham, an area located roughly between Prince Avenue and Hancock Avenue from downtown to Athens Regional. The neighborhood is the namesake of an English settlement, and is controversially known as Athens’ first suburb because of its origin as an 80-lot speculative development laid out by Col. Wreck Tech Beating the Jackets Will Make Smart’s First Year a Success

by Cy Brown news@flagpole.com Here’s a recap of Georgia’s win over Louisiana-Lafayette for anyone who really wants one: Isaiah McKenzie scored on a 55-yard run and an 82-yard punt return to give Georgia a two-touchdown lead early in the first quarter. Jacob Eason did little slinging in the windy conditions, but completed 13 of his 19 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Nick Chubb rushed for over 100 yards once again and scored twice. The defense picked off the ULL quarterback thrice, one each for Deandre Baker, Malkom Parrish and Aaron Davis. ULL closed the gap once the Bulldogs put in their second team, but Georgia still managed a 35-21 win to give it a 7-4 record this season.

Even though we roughly predicted the record, it still feels like a punch in the gut, because really all we were thinking about was the eight wins and not the four losses.

And all losses are not created equal.

Looking back at how this season has played out, there is no doubt that the Vanderbilt loss is worse than the Florida loss. Florida is the SEC East champ and quite clearly a better team. Vanderbilt was lucky that Jim Chaney called a horrible play. Tennessee was lucky that Georgia’s secondary forgot how to defend for a split second.

Which is another problem with talking about how you think a season will play out.

OK, now that that’s out of the way (takes deep breath)… NEEERRRRRRDS! Georgia squares off with in-state rival Georgia Tech this Saturday in Athens. The game with the Yellow Jackets is always important, but it has a slightly different tenor this year. For Kirby Smart, it could determine if his first season in charge at Georgia is perceived as a slight success or a slight failure.

The goal for this season was set, by fans at least, at roughly nine wins, the amount Mark Richt got in his final regular season.

Beating Tech would give the Bulldogs eight.

In my mind, that’s a really strong effort, considering Smart inherited a patchwork offensive line and freshman quarterback.

I imagine Richt would have had roughly the same level of success had he stayed one more season. (Miami is also 7-4.)

Of course, looking at it now, eight wins doesn’t feel that great, even though most fans expected it to happen. I think that’s because, in the offseason, we talk about wins and losses in the abstract. When we’re talking about how many games we think Georgia will win, we’re also implicitly talking about how many games it will lose. It’s just that we don’t focus on those losses when we’re pontificating about the future.

should’ve won. An 8-4 record may have looked like a strong one for this team before the season, but it doesn’t look as good when 10-2 was just a few plays away.

But games like Georgia Tech provide an opportunity for a twofer of sorts. Fans tend to give a lot more credit for wins over a rival, as well as a lot more criticism for a loss to one. That’s one reason Richt endeared himself to Georgia fans so quickly.

He didn’t lose to Georgia Tech in his first seven times facing it, and he had a 13-2 career record over the Jackets at Georgia.

Knowing that Richt was going to shut up the Tech fan in the cubicle next you come season’s end helped fans forgive a lot of his losses. Beating Tech provides a catharsis at the end of the season that helps erase some of the bad stuff that preceded it.

That’s what’s at stake for Smart this Saturday. Fans will either spend the offseason hollering about how he isn’t right for the job, or they’ll wait patiently for the rebuilding process to progress. Beating Tech certainly won’t guarantee Smart’s success in the future. But it’ll make me look back on this season a helluva lot more fondly than I would’ve at one point.

Anarchy in the ATH Checking in on the Bombs Away Collective

ast year, Bombs Away Books opened as an anarchist bookstore, a workerrun establishment below Jittery Joe’s downtown. The shop shut down due to issues with the location, but it’s since reopened as a donation-based infoshop and library tucked away inside a wing of a communal living space on North Chase Street.

The space stocks a range of leftist and postleftist material, from Emma Goldman to AK Press, as well as an assortment of zines and political publications.

The Bombs Away collective has recently begun publishing its own zine, Lit Fuse, and is soon expanding its stock. Two members of the collective, Will Turner and Christine—who prefers that her last name not be published—recently discussed the move and their experiences running an anarchist infoshop in Athens.

FP: If a university student who had never been exposed to this line of thought before were to come into the shop, what would you steer them to first?

C: We have a lot of zines, and that’s what people who haven’t had a lot of experience with this before tend to gravitate toward, because it breaks down some really complex philosophies and a lot of history. It depends, too, what they’re interested in.

Whether it’s gender studies or Marxist philosophy or the prison-industrial complex, we’d find a zine for them and then let them know of more meaty books they could look into. Also, our zine [laughs].

FP: Do you feel like operating as a workerrun collective or an anarchist shop in the South has a different climate?

WT: I do feel like there are some hurdles in some ways. You’re still dealing with capitalism, the same system, no matter what part of the world you’re in, but there’s still definitely some strange tension in the South [that’s], I feel, leftover from maybe, like, the Cold War era. People hear about anarchist collectives or worker-run things

C: I feel like it’s less about North-South and more about urban versus rural or large cities versus college towns or small towns.

Anywhere across the country where you have a really big city, it’s a little bit more expected.

FP: If someone was going to start up a worker-run bookstore or infoshop, what advice would you give them?

WT: Visit lots of infoshops, for sure.

Figure out if you want a storefront and if you’re willing to keep up with the rent game.

C: Or willing to live in it.

WT: Yeah, figure out if you want that [storefront] or something where it’s literally part of your life every day. That’s one thing I’d say. The other is, if you believe in it, do it. It takes work, but it’s not hard. You just have to make sure you find people that share the same vision and will work just as hard. It

feels like a homecoming or family reunion when Damien Ellison is back in Bethel Midtown Village.

As we post up in the parking lot to talk, nearly every car stops to greet the young rapper known as Yung’N Restless, who grew up in the low-income neighborhood just north of downtown. Familiar calls and cries sound out from porches and breezeways, from windows and across the grounds. The tape of our conversation is punctuated with the exchanges, which ring on replay with the reverb of human voices shouted among the brick and concrete.

“I come from this shit,” says Ellison, who now resides a few miles away. “I did my first song ever out here in 2005. I recorded it in an apartment up under the one I was staying in.”

“Product of my environment/ Salute to Bethel,” Ellison rhymes on a BET-cypher-style video that helped solidify his place as one of Athens’ most promising up-and-coming rappers. His video for “OKAY” was filmed in Bethel. Bethel imbues his music, but Ellison’s relationship with the longtroubled neighborhood is complicated. Bethel is both home and hindrance, and its increasingly famous native son is a man divided. “I love it, but this shit poison,” he says, looking around. “I come from this shit, but my mind’s somewhere else.”

Ellison is a man with multiple homes: musically, intellectually, philosophically and physically. He’s a certified Southern rapper who spurns much of the South’s late chart-topping produce—the now-hegemonic style of Atlanta’s Future and Young Thug, for example. He’s a young man known for his “old soul.” He’s not the guy you expect to gush about how Lauryn Hill is his favorite artist.

Ellison has a laser-like focus on personal success in music, but not for himself. “I don’t even want it for me,” he says. “Some people are like, ‘I gotta get rich, I gotta get rich,’ and I’m thinking, ‘Man, I gotta get my people straight.’ It ain’t even for me.”

It makes sense, then, that the paradoxical artist released two contradictory mixtapes on the same day in early October: Goldie, an album by turns soulful and cerebral, and Ignant, an aggressive, freestyle collection of trap bangers.

The two releases were followed almost immediately by another unlikely hybrid: a lyrical, Southern take on one of the biggest songs out of the New York rap scene at the moment, Brooklyn rapper Young M.A’s “OOOUUU.” Not only are Southern rappers not typically lyrical, but they tend to eschew classically New York-style beats like Young M.A’s for the dominant Atlanta sound. But Yung’N Restless wants to keep you guessing.

The one dimension of Ellison that’s without contradiction is his work ethic. Not content with releasing two album-length efforts on the same day, he dropped an accompanying video for Ignant’s “10-4.” The video leapt to 10,000 views in less than two weeks, and combined with the viral success of his “OOOUUU” video, brought Yung’N Restless a new level of success and reach, hinting at something bigger. Famed Atlanta DJ Greg Street reportedly has his eyes on the Athens artist, and the two are rumored to have some of the best work Ellison has produced ready for potential release. Ellison even saw his music in rotation at Street’s hip hop/R&B radio giant V-103 last year.

Indeed, Ellison is poised to make a name for himself. But like some Athens musicians on the rock side of things, he’s unhappy with the current pop trends in rap and aims to make it on his own terms. He shares a certain kinship with local bands who maintain a particularly Southern—and certainly Athenian—allegiance to guitars and acoustic drums during a moment of bleep-bloop electronica in rock.

While other locals might look to Elephant 6, Yung’N Restless returns to Atlanta’s Dungeon Family collective for inspiration. It doesn’t get much more classically Southern than Ellison’s first memories of music: listening to his mother’s Goodie Mob tapes in the back of an old-school Oldsmobile Delta.

It is those formational experiences that inspired Ellison’s

desire to make music with “substance.” He does not hide his disdain for what he calls “mumble rap,” the trendy style popularized by Future, Young Thug, Desiigner and others who do, it must be said, mumble incoherently much of the time. Ellison, a Southern classicist, looks to the articulate lyricism of Goodie Mob, OutKast and others of that ilk. The contemporary rap scene is “just a whole bunch of characters,” he complains. “If you can get your character to sell, that’s all it is. It ain’t even about the music.”

But that trend is passing, he predicts. “I feel like this shit is coming back,” Ellison says about what he finds to be richer music of substance. “People are starting to pay attention to people talking about shit again. They’re waking up.”

Much rap music is indeed returning to a politically minded, “conscious” age, and Yung’N Restless’ latest offering is a track that belongs rightfully alongside Killer Mike or Kendrick Lamar. Released just three days before the election, “Spiritual Negroe” features Ellison’s best and fiercest rapping yet. On the raging track, Ellison offers political rap on par with T.I.’s recent Us or Else record. Blame and anger are directed both inwardly and outwardly. Ellison admonishes some in his community but is sure to point out the effects of racist repression over the past half-century.

Taking aim at American mass incarceration, he continues, “Niggas in prison wonderin’ why they in the cell they in/ ’Cause ain’t none fuckin’ with melanin.”

That latest track is yet another change from an artist who’s committed to innovation. “I honestly feel the music is a gateway,” Ellison says. “I know I got a calling, a calling with words. I don’t know what exactly it is. Load In/Load Out Local Podcast Explores the Wild World of Touring

yan Lewis laughs as he recalls a miserable time on the road with his band. “The Agenda, at one point, had this van where the bottom was partially rusted out,” he says. “We were in the Northeast, and it was raining, and it was cold. For a week, our stuff never got dry. It was fucking awful. Oh, and it was November, and the van didn’t have heat.”

One gets the sense the local folks behind the “Load In/Load Out” podcast would be telling tour stories whether or not there were microphones involved. Lewis, co-host Cash Carter and producer Bill Fortenberry created the program after endless hours of talking about what they had experienced on the road. The trio records and releases epi-

Fortenberry says touring is especially ripe for storytelling because artists from all walks of life can relate. “Someone can be touring in a van or a bus, but it’s a slice of life that can be up or down through any socioeconomic level,” he says. “Touring is an act where an artistic class of people rub up against the world, and that friction is what’s interesting.”

“The genesis of it is really just being a musician and having these kinds of conversations. Or, being on a tour and hearing some crazy story that you think of later,” says Fortenberry.

Released under the banner of Kindercore, the longtime Athens label, “Load In/Load Out” took years of conceptualizing before any of it was recorded.

After taping a nearly three-hour pilot with Lucas Jensen of Venice is Sinking a few years ago, Carter, Lewis and Fortenberry thought it might be wise to set some limitations for the show. Lewis says that while the trial run with Jensen was too long to release as an episode, it gave the team confidence to move forward.

Since its inaugural episode featuring Vanessa Briscoe Hay and Michael Lachowski of Pylon, the podcast has featured Cindy Wilson of The B-52s, local hip hop artist Blacknerdninja, Brooklyn band Shana Falana and more. Though musicians may be the obvious choice for guests, the hosts hope to include crew members in the future, as well as non-musician touring artists. Carey Means, the voice of Frylock on Adult Swim’s “Aqua Teen Hunger Force,” tells a few stories of traveling to Comic-Con in this week’s episode.

The show’s creators make sense of their hobby through a range of metaphors. Carter likens the experience to data analysis, a process of filing experiences into relatable categories. For him, stories about where to eat on the road are as worthy as the deathdefying ones, like Monsoon singer and guitarist Sienna Chandler’s tale about staying in an abandoned school in New York.

Lewis says the epic nature of life on the road is what fascinates him most. “Touring is like the concept of an adventure in the same way that being in the military is for some people,” he says. “[There are] people that hike the Appalachian Trail or climb Everest or go to war. I always thought of touring as the Fellowship of the Ring—a group of people brought together for a common purpose going through wild adversity.”

After taping more than a dozen episodes so far, the team doesn’t see the well of stories drying up anytime soon. “There are still stories beyond [what] we will tell in this podcast,” says Lewis. “We’ve even bleeped a couple of people’s names out to protect their futures.” f Episodes of Load In/Load Out are available to stream at Kindercore.com.

WEIRD SCENES INSIDE THE BATCAVE: Future Ape Tapes continue to dive deeper into their weird alternate reality.

Sometimes, though, it seems this odd space finds them instead. To wit, their latest, ///Bat Cave///, was recorded inside a friendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bat-infested house between the tenants moving out and the utilities being turned off. The notes for the record say that no bats were encountered while recording, but definitely lent a certain vibe to things. That vibe is most noticeable on the second track, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Abattoir Road.â&#x20AC;? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got a driving, mechanical beat and almost rap-like vocals, and goes on long enough that by the time it dissolves the listener feels like heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experienced something. Actually, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

the most traditionally constructed of the songs here, and when the Apes release that mixtape of â&#x20AC;&#x153;hitsâ&#x20AC;? years from now, this will likely be the one picked up from this release.

HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS: The folks behind the hip-hop event IndieFest will present a huge showcase of Athens talent at The Foundry Thursday, Dec. 1. This night, billed as ATH All-Star Showcase 2016, is a really good reflection of its title, as thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s some real cream in this crop. Featured performers include Dictator, Tony B, Yungâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;N Restless, supergroup Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re Weird (Squalle, Blacknerdninja, LG and Profound), Ant Breezy, Milyssa Rose, Caufield and a rare live show from elder statesman Ishues. Additionally, there are planned appearances from Life the Griot, G-Money, Stella Groove, SoHi, The Talented Mr. Winfrey, Ant Da Ripper, Ziggy RoxXx, Shania the Artist and Lah al a Bin. Montu Miller will host, and house music will be spun by Chief Rocka. This show is the perfect opportunity for newcomers to check out a quality selection of Athens hip hop and related styles, as well as a showcase for longtime fans to celebrate the scene. New Thai to Try Plus, a Non-Chain Option on Epps Bridge

By Hillary Brown food@flagpole.com NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: A restaurant of long standing, with a clientele itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s built over years and years, has an easier time with a difficult location than a new place trying to find an audience. Such is the case with Thai E3 Cuisine (269 E. Broad St., 706-2159500), which a couple of months ago moved into the space the now-shuttered Speakeasy had occupied for years.

In some ways, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an excellent location: a beautiful historic building with great views of UGAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s North Campus and enough space to foster many intimate seating arrangements. The problem is that people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s there, even with the entrance newly painted in bright shades to draw in passers-by, because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s upstairs and its on-street presence is limited. As with Speakeasy, one has to hike up the steep staircase to get to the dining room, but once youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re up there, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perfectly pleasant, although not exactly crowded.

Like the other Thai restaurants in town, E3 offers a weekday lunch special in which you pick your main dish and your protein (chicken, beef, tofu, shrimp) or lack thereof (straight veggie) and get a cup of soup and a crispy veggie roll gratis, for $8.99 in this case. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the most accessible way to experience the restaurant, and it works fine, with about 20 different options (fried rice, noodles, â&#x20AC;&#x153;special entrees,â&#x20AC;? curries and sweet-and-sour Bangkok chicken), although you can ask to see and then order off of the full menu even at lunch. The soup is generally good; the veggie roll is drizzled with a sweetish sauce and not particularly exciting. The same special, upped to $10.99, is available at dinner, too.

Noodle dishes feel fresh and not too goopy with palm sugar, with a bit of bite to the noodles themselves, whether theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re thin or wide. Pad Thai may be a boring dish on which to judge a restaurant, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a

standard, and E3â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s version is well done, lightly sauced and liberal with fresh bean sprouts. If you stray from the specials, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find even better stuff, like a larb made with ground chicken and plenty of onion, a refreshing dish best suited to hotter months but worth eating any time. The pla todâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;large chunks of white fish, battered with rice flour and fried, then tossed with lots of scallions, carrots cut to resemble flowers and other vegetables in a garlicky brown sauceâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;is equally good.

E3 has a large menu, so thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more exploring to do. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just hope it sticks around long enough to give us the opportunity. B.I.G.: You could be forgiven for assuming Bone Island Grillhouse (2055 Oconee Conn., 706-623-0255), just across the way from Cheddarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, Freddyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, McDonaldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and Starbucks, is a chain. Just about everything else in the area is. But, despite the fact that its name, aesthetic and menu are similar to Bonefish Grill, which has more than 200 locations spread across the country, Bone Island Grillhouse is only the second branch of a restaurant that has its original location on Lake Oconee.

Rather than being comparable to a Chiliâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s aiming more at a steakhouse atmosphere, with a large fireplace behind glass, a warm and clubby feel and a menu that privileges simple preparations and sides, but with an emphasis on surf over turf. The best thing it does is a salad that comes standard with pretty much anything you order, served family-style out of a fancy white bowl and featuring a whole bunch of housemade dark-bread croutons. The restaurant knows this, and so it offers the

house salad dressing (a slightly sweet vinaigrette with parmesan and herbs) for sale by the bottle.

Seafood entrees are straightforward.

The seared piece of salmon technically is dressed with horseradish compound butter, but youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d mostly just know that from reading the menu. In practice, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just a nice piece of fish, cooked without fireworks, maybe just a touch over-salted, and paired with rice and broccoli (both equally simple).

The Key West mahi-mahi is comparable, although it comes with a mango salsa.

Among the appetizers, the fries are underwhelming, even when topped with cheese and bacon, but the catfish poppers are nicely done, and the sausage dip is not bad. Starches are a bit of a weak point, with

the exception of the cheese grits that form a base for several of the bowls, and service is a strong suit.

Bone Island Grillhouse is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, closed Sunday, has a full bar (a nice place to eat should all the seats in the dining room be full), does catering, and has a whole bunch of gluten-free options on its large menu, as well as a loyalty program that offers discounts.

benefit the charity Comic Relief, turning it into a proposed five-film franchise. Her world will certainly support such an ambitious effort, even as this expansive idea means its initial entry inevitably lacks the sort of self-contained narrative structure to make its events feel significant. I refuse to ruin the filmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s final reveal, though it is easily spoiled by a cursory internet search, but it so obviously redefines the franchiseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like Niffler, a horny sort of rhinoceros called course that everything preceding it seems to lose import. Fortunately, the precedan Erumpent and the invisible sweetheart ing two hours are charming and magical known as a Demiguise. The Potterverse Expands Plus, an OK Teen Dramedy and a Forgettable Horror Flick

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM (PG-13) What a triumphant return to J.K. Rowlingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Harry Potter universe! Rowling opens up the world she created by revealing what was happening in magical America in the early 20th Century. While future legendary headmaster Albus Dumbledore was educating witches and wizards as an instructor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardryâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;if you did not already know, its American counterpart is known as Ilvermornyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;an evil wizard named Gellert Grindelwald was wreaking pre-Voldemort havoc across Europe.

Concurrently, the American magical world was dealing with its own issues thanks to the New Salem Philanthropic Society, aka the New Salemers, an anti-magical movement led by Mary Lou Barebone (Samantha Morton).

(Election, the teen movie with which it seems to share the most DNA, is conspicuously left off the list of inspirations.)

Byrd (Academy Award nominee Hailee Steinfeld) is an awkward 17-year-old whose only friend, Krista (Haley Lu Richardson from the underrated Olympic comedy The Bronze), has begun dating Nadineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perfect, hated older brother, Darian (Blake Jenner).

With a flighty mom (Kyra Sedgwick) and a sketchy crush, Nadine can only turn to her crabby history teacher (Woody Harrelson) and classmate Erwin Kim (Hayden Szeto), who is crushing on her pretty hard.

The situations blithely melt from sad to funny to uncomfortable with a uniform tone cribbed straight from the Diablo Cody book of screenwritingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;not a bad thing, as Juno was terrific. That movieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cast was a large reason why, a trait shared by The Edge of Seventeen. Steinfeld, Harrelson, Sedgwick and the lesser-known actors, of which Szeto is the standout, more than make up for how unlikable Nadine can be.

In her feature debut, writer-director Kelly Fremon Craig does not do a lot wrong, but this teen dramedy is not the second coming of John Hughes. However, it is hard to feel bad afterwards.

THE MONSTER (R) The only reason Bryan Bertinoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third film is important is because his first, The Strangers, is the best horror film released since 2000. His new movieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s story would have been the best episode of Showtimeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s short-lived â&#x20AC;&#x153;Masters of Horror.â&#x20AC;?

As a feature, it suffers from a narrative that cannot quite stretch to 60 minutes.

When a mom (Zoe Kazan) and daughter (Ella Ballentine) break down in the middle of nowhere, they encounter a dangerous creature. The creature design apes Giger but stands on its own, and Kazan/Ballentine are legit. The Monster does not legitimize Bertino as a post-Strangers talent, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a better VOD release than its peers. f

My Friend’s Wedding and Me Advice for Athens’ Loose and Lovelorn

By Bonita Applebum advice@flagpole.com Dear Bonita, Two of my oldest friends are getting married in a few months, but I wasn’t invited to the wedding. That’s really messed up on its own, but I’m really offended because I’m the one that set them up! I remember years ago in college when the bride was desperate to get her future groom’s attention, and I really did help with that. I encouraged her to approach him— he’s really shy when it comes to women—and kept encouraging her when he didn’t seem that interested.

Now he’s actually gonna marry her, and I’m being told that the wedding is “really expensive” and that “there are only so many seats available.” Every other random hanger-on from our college days managed to get a seat, though!

AND their spouses! Plus her parents are rich with “old money.” I know they can handle one more guest!

Simply put, I’m hurt and angry. Everyone’s getting all excited to go on a trip to this outof-town wedding, and I just get to stay in Athens like an asshole. She insists it’s just a space issue, but I just can’t believe that. She and I had our ups and downs as friends back in the day, so I suspect this is her petty nature rearing its ugly head. Should I trust that she just ran out of space on the guest list, or does this sound fishy to you, too?

I got a new roommate on short notice through Craigslist. It’s always a gamble, but this girl is really nice and laid-back. She’s not from here, either, so it’s interesting to learn about other places through her. One thing, though, is that she doesn’t like to wear many clothes around the house. She’s always walking through the shared spaces in her underwear, or even naked! I’m nervous to bring my boyfriend over now, because I don’t want him being distracted by this exotic, undressed girl getting a Coke out of the fridge. I’ve tried to talk to her about it, but I always freeze up. How do I nip this in the bud?

Very easily: Lay down some ground rules about the house. It’s all about making the household comfortable for everyone who lives there, so I think this is an issue worth addressing.

Yeah, hun, this sounds fishy as hell to me. A rich girl throwing a lavish destination wedding ran out of seats before she was able to invite the person who introduced her to her husband, but she has seats for the partners of peripheral college friends?
