Athens Did Its Best to Stop Trump Plus, Prince Developments, West Broad and More Local News

By Blake Aued news@flagpole.com I posted a longer piece on the In the Loop blog at flagpole.com, in case you’re somehow still thirsting for election analysis, but in a nutshell, nationally Trump more or less got the typical Republican vote that a Republican presidential candidate gets, while President Obama’s base didn’t turn out for Clinton. As for why or where Democrats go from here, your guess is as good as mine. [Blake Aued]

Most Flagpole readers are probably still processing Donald Trump’s stunning upset, the biggest since at least Harry Truman in 1948. If it’s any small comfort for local Democrats, you did just about everything you could to elect Hillary Clinton.

Turnout was higher in Clarke County this year than in 2012, with 4,000 more votes cast, and Clinton won 65 percent of the Athens vote, outpacing Obama by two percentage points. Trump won just 28 percent of the vote locally, six points less than Mitt Romney. Libertarian Gary Johnson won 4 percent—a bit higher than usual—and 1,137 people cast write-in votes, but it looks as if third-party candidates drew more from Trump than Clinton, at least locally.

Still, Trump won Georgia handily, 51-46, which is about the usual margin we’ve come to expect. Here are some more local results:

✓ Voters opted to continue ESPLOST, a 1 percent sales tax for local school construction, by a 72-28 margin.

✘ Amendment 1, aka the Opportunity School District, aka the state school takeover, went down in flames 73-27 locally and 60-40 statewide.

✓ The other three constitutional amendments passed. Athens voters supported Amendment 2 (fining sex offenders and taxing adult businesses to support victims of sex trafficking) and Amendment 4 (earmarking sales taxes on fireworks for public safety), but narrowly opposed We were all this Hi-Lo patron on election night.

Then the state Department of Transportation widened Broad Street to accommodate the rise of the automobile and the strip-mall development lining the corridor, and crossing it became more difficult. There are no crosswalks except at traffic lights, which are few and far between from a pedestrian’s point of view, and no refuge for people once they get in the road. The Hancock-Broad intersection has no crosswalk at all. This divided the neighborhood.

“I’d jump up and down if someone would put a median on Broad Street and put some trees on it and make it look like people live on either side, and it’s not just this big commercial corridor,” said school board member Linda Davis, who also grew up in the area. “Making it walkable would be amazing.

“It’s an interesting place, and it could be such a fun place to walk and bike,” Davis said. “But I think with the structures we put in place, we made it kind of isolated, less fun and less safe.”

Davis and Daniel serve on a committee—a partnership among the AthensClarke County government, the Clarke County School District, the AHA and the Athens Land Trust—that’s drawing up a master plan for the West Broad neighborhood (roughly, the area between Hancock Avenue, Alps Road, Baxter Street and Milledge Avenue).

In part because of the divisions created by roads, West Broad is actually several different neighborhoods, according to consultant Bob Begle—West Hancock north of Broad and south of Broad, Rocksprings to the east and Magnolia Street to the west.

“These are areas that have a lot of overlapping issues, but are somewhat different, too,” Begle told the committee at a Nov. 7 meeting.

Begle outlined how the area has changed: It was all farmland until 1948, when Broadacres, at Broad and Hancock, was built. Private homes followed in the 1950s, then student housing and commercial development. The neighborhood is home to four schools, the library, Rocksprings Park and St. Mary’s Hospital. It has its issues these days—only 32 percent of homes are owner-occupied, 32 percent of buildings are “substandard,” and while crime has subsided, it’s still a concern, according to Begle—but because of its location and amenities, it’s a prime target for gentrification. The goal of the West Broad group is to improve the neighborhood while also protecting it, to “make sure we’re not improving things only for the new people moving in,” Begle said.

walkability as one of their top concerns. While GDOT controls Broad Street, there are smaller things that could be doneâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;sidewalks on Magnolia, for example. Alps Elementary students canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get on Baxter directly, and once theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re on Baxter, the sidewalk to the library is dangerously close to the street. Sidewalks around Clarke Central are too close to the street, too, Begle said.

Housing could be addressed by redeveloping Broadacres and Rocksprings Homes into mixed-income neighborhoods similar to Columbia Brookside (formerly Jack R. Wells or Pauldoe), with inclusionary zoning to force developers to include affordable units, and by ramping the AHA and ALTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s existing programs, Begle said.

A historic district is a possibility too; historic preservation is â&#x20AC;&#x153;very criticalâ&#x20AC;? to preserving black culture, Davis said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is really nothing to stop wholesale demolition of entire blocks, because it is [zoned] multifamily,â&#x20AC;? ACC Commissioner Melissa Link said. A historic district would not only freeze homeownersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; taxes for seven years, but stabilize home prices by preventing builders from tearing down modest homes to make way for bigger ones, said Amy Kissane, executive director of the ACHF. Blaine Williams replaced Alan Reddish as county manager in February.

Most said their departments are in good shapeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and Athens is such a desirable place to live, Williams said, that people will accept less pay here. (But a pay study of county employees is underway, he said, and despite heavy responsibilities, police officers start at only $30,000.)

Freeman said that, given widely publicized conflicts in other places, the potential for tension between police and citizens is â&#x20AC;&#x153;the highest itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been, probably, since the civil rights era.â&#x20AC;? But Athensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; police are â&#x20AC;&#x153;extremely well trained,â&#x20AC;? he said, and â&#x20AC;&#x153;community policing is ingrained in the department.â&#x20AC;? He seeks public inputâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;â&#x20AC;&#x153;so we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have groupthinkâ&#x20AC;? in the departmentâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and when crimes spiked recently around Vine Street, police held a health fair to help open communications in the community.

Plans submitted to Athens-Clarke County call for one larger building with a 28,700 square-foot retail space on the ground floor (possiblyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;stop me if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard this beforeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a grocery store) and three floors of apartments above, with a total of 96 bedrooms in one- and two-bedroom units. (The fourth floor would be set back from the street.) The target market is people working at the hospital or the UGA Health Sciences Campus, Warnes said.

The density is right for the neighborhood, Link said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to get people living in town, but thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not so crazy thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have a huge impact,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Next door would be a smaller two-story building with space for two small retail stores and a restaurant with a patio, and a parking deck attached. Cars would enter and exit the deck through the top level on Prince; the bottom level would be built into the hillside.

The plans include about 1.6 acres of green space surrounding a creek on the back side of the property, along with a pathway connecting the development to Hiawassee Avenue and another pedestrian entrance off Nacoochee Avenue.

The lot was once the Prince Rondoval apartments, which were torn down at least a decade ago to make way for a medical office building that never materialized. Athens Regional bought the vacant lot and has been using it for parking ever since.

So far, the development has been drawing rave reviews from neighborhood residents. The developers and architect Bob Smith met several times with Link, as well as Normaltown, Cobbham and Boulevard residents and the Upper Oconee Watershed Network. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They laid out a blank slate and said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;What do yâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;all want to see?â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? Link said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When does that ever happen? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a dream scenario.â&#x20AC;?

Parts of the property are zoned residential, so Warnes will be seeking to rezone those portions to commercial-

In Athens â&#x20AC;&#x153;thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of people doing great things, but resources are spread a mile wide and an inch deepâ&#x20AC;? and seem to be duplicated, he said.

Many citizens had questions about transportation. ACC cannot lower (or at least enforce) speed limits, even on its own streets, without GDOTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s approval, explained Raessler.

Traffic engineers set speed limits based on how fast most drivers are driving on a given street, on the theory that drivers respond to road conditions. So, do drivers effectively set the speed limit? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Not entirely,â&#x20AC;? Raessler said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a feedback loop,â&#x20AC;? but redesigning roadways to slow down traffic is usually cost-prohibitive.

One citizen asked if anything could be done about the chlorine taste in county water. It helps to let it sit for an hour, Stephens said, but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no good alternative to chlorine to keep water safe, and â&#x20AC;&#x153;youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got to have a little residualâ&#x20AC;? to guarantee disinfection.

And Public Utilities will be looking at the possibility of eventually distributing â&#x20AC;&#x153;reclaimedâ&#x20AC;? water usable by industry (but not for drinking)â&#x20AC;&#x201D;for example, for irrigation use.

Williams said thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an â&#x20AC;&#x153;overabundanceâ&#x20AC;? of student housing downtown because â&#x20AC;&#x153;it throws off the most cash. It is much more profitable.â&#x20AC;? The zoning code was changed 20 years ago to encourage more intown development and preserve the rural â&#x20AC;&#x153;green belt,â&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;now thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s starting to happen.â&#x20AC;? We have always congratulated ourselves on being a blue island in a red sea, but how did we get that way, and what does the Trump victory mean for our future?

It didn’t just happen that we are a largely liberal community open to ideas and willing to put government to work for the benefit of all our citizens—even when our government is not entirely willing. Athens not so long ago was governed by a conservative city council and county commission, but people got to work to change that situation. Good candidates came forward to run for office, and people got organized to support them and work for them. We elected women and blacks and liberals to the county commission and also to the city council. The real change came when the council and the commission were combined. For both Georgia and the U.S., the election of Donald Trump as president is going to mean some major changes in our lives.

In a radio interview last week, Sen. David Perdue predicted that Republican members of Congress will quickly repeal the Affordable Care Act, the Clean Power Plan and the “Waters of the United States” water quality rule. They will also approve the Keystone oil pipeline that would extend through the massive Ogallala Aquifer, one of the world’s largest underground sources of fresh water. “All four of those things will get signed into law by President Trump,” Perdue said. “All four of those things will get done in the first 100 days.”

There had been proposals to ease into Medicaid expansion in 2017 and bring federal money to Georgia that would have gone to hospitals and physicians that treat Medicaid patients. With the repeal of Obamacare, that issue is dead. The big losers will be financially stressed rural hospitals that treat a large number of indigent patients who can’t afford to pay their bills.

Without Medicaid expansion funds coming in, you could see as many as 15–20 rural hospitals in Georgia forced to close because they can’t afford to stay in operation.

In addition, the end of Obamacare will leave more than 20 million Americans without health insurance, including more than 580,000 Georgians who get health coverage through the insurance exchange that is part of the Affordable Care Act. The repeal of the Clean Power Plan will be a financial boost to Georgia Power, which will be able to continue operating coal-fired power plants that spew massive quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Georgia Power could even reopen some of the coal-fired facilities it has closed because of the clean air standards.

It really should have come as no surprise to Athenians when Billy and Will Morris, who own the media conglomerate that owns the Banner-Herald, jumped on the Trump bandwagon in the closing days of the campaign and endorsed him in our local daily. The Morrises have a lot in common with Trump.

They, too, declared bankruptcy, and they, too, stiffed their creditors—to the tune of $200 million.

House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin has proposed for years that Social Security be privatized and that Medicare be replaced with an insurance voucher system. Social Security, in fact, has been a target of the Republican Party since the program was implemented in 1935. One of the GOP’s most cherished goals has been to reverse the New Deal that President Franklin Roosevelt put in place.

“If you’re going to repeal and replace Obamacare, you have to address those issues as well,” Ryan said last week.

“Medicare has got some serious issues because of Obamacare. So those things are part of our plan to replace Obamacare.”

Once you replace Medicare with an insurance voucher plan, senior citizens will have no choice but to pay whatever premiums are demanded by private insurance companies. They very likely will pay more money for less coverage because vouchers will not be able to keep up with the increasing cost of health insurance.

With a Republican president and GOP majorities in both houses of Congress, Ryan should be able to accomplish his long-held goals of dismantling Social Security and Medicare—if not in the first 100 days of the new administration, then shortly after.

Trump’s strongest support, of course, came from voters who are age 65 and older.

They are the ones who would be directly affected by the elimination of Medicare and Social Security. It will be interesting to see how quickly, or whether, the new president signs legislation that would have such a negative impact on his staunchest supporters.

Trump voters said they wanted changes, and they will get changes beyond anything they may have imagined. Whether they like those changes is another matter entirely. f

Inside Oconee Hill Cemetery The Resting Place for Everyone from Factory Workers to the Athens Elite

Similarly out-of-sight and neglected is the â&#x20AC;&#x153;coloredâ&#x20AC;? burial ground, though much of it was built over to make way for the train tracks or dug through for city infrastructure such as sewage lines. istorian Charlotte Thomas Marshall has a seemingly infinite knowledge of Athens society in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third Heritage Walk of the season gave Athenians an opportunity to witness her historical prowess during a tour of Oconee Hill Cemetery Nov. 5.

Marshall, the first female trustee of the cemetery, came to Athens in 1966, and has done impressive research and writing on the site since then.

She unearthed for the crowd a history of Athens that was both somber and spectacular.

The tour kicked off with a view inside the 1880s Georgian cottage that was the sextonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house, where the Bisson family lived for 86 years keeping watch over the cemetery, as well as sculpting tombstones for many of the graves on Oconee Hill. The house was renovated in 2007 by the Friends of Oconee Hill Cemetery.

Claire James, a caretaker of the house, pointed out interesting tidbits like the burial location of the Bissonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; dog. An old stone water trough by the entrance reads, â&#x20AC;&#x153;A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast.â&#x20AC;?

Established in 1856, Oconee Hill Cemetery is actually a combination of three. The first part was the City of Athensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; cemetery. Later came the Factory Burying Ground, which was owned by the Athens Manufacturing Company as a place for employees and their families to be buried, and the Congregation Children of Israel Cemetery, established after the Civil War. The City of Athensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; cemetery was the original and remains the largest, as well as, to many, the most widely known. It contains two small graveyards at the bottom of the back side of the first hill that lack any of the pomp the resting receive farther uphill. The first lay forgotten and nearly lost until a curious Marshall and a supportive friend waded through waist-deep piles of tree cuttings that had been discarded atop the grounds. There, she found

While the affluent have a beautifully serene resting place, time will wear anything down, and those 100-ormore-year-old monuments have suffered. has been partly covered in a layer of black; noses and other small parts of statues have been shot off for target practice; and in the days when the train still rumbled through the yard leading up to the cemetery, the vibrations caused a lot of damage â&#x20AC;&#x153;to the fabric of the cemetery,â&#x20AC;? Marshall said, which can be witnessed in some of the tipping monuments and undulating ground. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to be buried in a treeless place,â&#x20AC;? said Marshall as she guided the tour through the first hill, replete with large, broad trees. The cemetery was built in a park-like manner, in a time when cemeteries were a family affair. Often, families would picnic near their relativesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; resting places, telling stories of the deceased to their children. But in light of several large trees that fell, wiping out whole parts of some monuments, only some of which could be restored, Marshall warned, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Trees are also the greatest threat to a cemetery.â&#x20AC;?

Marshallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s knowledge of the cemetery extended beyond those buried there. She pointed out carvings and their meanings.

Ivy is representative of clinging to memory, anchors of Christian hope, crosses of faith, acorns of new life. Angels are everywhere, the figure the surviving family hoped their loved one was assuming after death.

Strikingly simple yet poignant, however, were the found objects used on the graves in the factory and Jewish burial grounds. A common practice among factory workers was to line the graves of their relatives with bricks because they couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford gravestones.

In the Jewish section, monuments similar in size and detail to those of the wealthy Athenians in the original cemetery can be found, but more intriguing are the small stones placed atop the graves. â&#x20AC;&#x153;After Schindlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s List came out, this phenomenon started,â&#x20AC;? Marshall said.

She explained that the movie reignited the Jewish tradition of placing stones on the graves they visited, a sign that someone had been there, and the dead had not been forgotten. Though largely a Jewish custom, people not associated with the faith have also adopted the practice.

You might be tempted to think that once youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in the ground, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve reached your final resting place. Marshall will toss that idea from your mind. She wrote an essay in The Tangible Past in Athens, Georgia entitled â&#x20AC;&#x153;All the Places Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll Go,â&#x20AC;? which goes into detail about the process of moving graves that many have undertaken to lay their loved ones elsewhere. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Even when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re buried, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know where youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll land,â&#x20AC;? she said. f

Creature Comforts Gets Comfortable Brewery Tours Will Benefit Local Nonprofits

reature Comforts Brewery kicks off its third annual â&#x20AC;&#x153;Get Comfortableâ&#x20AC;? campaign on Wednesday, Nov. 16.

The brewery established the campaign in an effort to combat and raise awareness of the poverty in Athens, which has the fifthhighest poverty rate among mid-sized cities in the U.S. Community involvement is an important pillar of Creature Comfortsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; foundation, CEO Chris Herron says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We knew before we ever opened our doors that we wanted any community that we operated in to be better as a result of us being there,â&#x20AC;? he says.

The five-month campaign benefits a different nonprofit partner each month. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s partners are Action Ministries, The Ark, Athens Area Homeless Shelter, Athens Community Council on Aging and The

use that platform for something more than selling beer. Whether that is encouraging people to crave curiosity so they can find their passion, or helping drive awareness, increase engagement and provide support to the nonprofits tackling the challenges of our community, we just feel it is the best way for us to use our voice.â&#x20AC;?

In addition to the weekly events at the brewery, partners of Get Comfortable will also be hosting events and raising funds for the campaign. Businesses partnering with Creature Comforts include 1000 Faces Coffee, carpenters Sons of Sawdust, Condor Chocolates and New West Records.

The Athens Area Homeless Shelter will be the first nonprofit hosted, although Community Outreach Coordinator and Human Resources Manager Katie Beauchamp says the total funds raised after five months will be split equally among the organizations, rather than each getting the money raised in a specific month. After a successful 2015â&#x20AC;&#x201C;16 campaign that raised $65,000, surpassing the $50,000 goal, this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s target is $100,000. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have been provided with a unique opportunity through the brewery to have a platform from which to speak to a large audience of people,â&#x20AC;? Herron says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have always felt like it is our responsibility to

put together kits with things like blankets, cleaning supplies and hygiene items.

A discount of $2 off the tour is offered if guests bring items to donate. A list of acceptable items is at getcomfortableathens.com and is updated as the nonprofits and their individual needs change. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll reach out to the nonprofits to see if they need anything specific, then work off of what they need most,â&#x20AC;? Gone Too Soon Memorial Fund Established for Activist and Artist Laura Conroy

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Laura was really excited to meet people she considered her heroes,â&#x20AC;? said Adam Lassila, her partner and fellow activist.

Together, the two also hosted potlucks at their home for like-minded Athenians, to share skills and educate themselves about human rights issues in Athens and beyond. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She and her circle of friends were invested in looking for policy change,â&#x20AC;? said Mendoza, a community organizer and director of LatinoFest in Athens. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[She wanted] to make a better life for people, to make this world a better place,â&#x20AC;? he added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That is a revolutionary.â&#x20AC;?

Conroy graduated in 2015 with honors from the University of Georgia with a degree in Spanish and linguistics. She was also an artist.

At 17, she began taking aerial silks and trapeze classes at Canopy Studio, a nonprofit community arts center. She became integral to the studio as a performer and teacher; she taught kids, teens and adult trapeze and pole classes, and in 2015, she spearheaded an outreach program that brings kids from Athensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Pinewood Estates North mobile-home neighborhood to Canopy on Saturdays for a scholarship-funded trapeze class.

SHUT IN (PG-13) For the life of me, I cannot determine why this generic horror movie was not dumped in the frigid wasteland of January or February, where its wintry landscape would have felt more seasonally appropriate. Its release not quite two weeks after Halloween makes one wonder why the studio did not position for an October release to generate a little extra cash from the horror holiday season. As it stands, Shut In will be gone and forgotten before Thanksgiving.

The narrative offers little new, as widow and clinical psychologist Mary Portman (Naomi Watts, pretty much reprising her role from The Ring) cares for her invalid stepson, Stephen (Charlie Heaton, the creepy older brother from Netflix’s “Stranger Things” acting even creepier), in a beautiful house in Middle-of-Nowhere, ME. After one of Mary’s patients, a young, deaf boy named Tom (an absolutely wasted Jacob Tremblay), goes missing while staying overnight at her house, Mary starts hearing things go bump in the night and having vivid nightmares diagnosed as parasomnia by her doctor (Oliver Platt). And there is the generic rub. Is Mary going crazy, or is she really being haunted by the ghost of

Athens DJs Assess the State of the Scene

whole goal is to make people happy.” This is how Mark Weathersby, known by his fans as DJ Mahogany, describes his approach to performing. “I know this might sound weird, but a person once told me if you’re happy, then everyone else around you is gonna be happy. I like to make crowds smile in whatever way I can.”

Mahogany is one of the most popular and recognizable DJs in Athens. His weekend residency at Little Kings Shuffle Club regularly packs out the venue, and his name has become synonymous with “dance party” among locals young and old. In the light of day, Weathersby is humble, soft-spoken and borderline shy, but during his late-night sets, he’s a force to be reckoned with—a boisterous and lively master of the stage whose crowd control is second to none.

The Athens DJ scene is varied.

There are plenty who cater to large crowds by playing Top 40 hits and popular ’90s tunes. Others focus on experimental mixes or dig deep into obscure jams from the past.

Some, like Weathersby, try to find a nice balance between the many types of DJ styles. In an attempt to assess the current state of Athens’ DJ culture, Flagpole contacted several local performers. This is what they had to say.

Split Scene “I think there are two DJ scenes going on simultaneously,” says Ben Bradberry, aka DJ Reindeer Games. “I think there is the older scene that caters more to the dance party crowd that has people coming out regardless of who is spinning because they want to dance and have a good time. At the same time, I think there is a newer, DJ Mahogany younger scene where DJs are trying harder to have their own sound that people will specifically come out to see.”

One person who is definitely forming his own unique sound is local producer and DJ Dillon McCabe, who goes by the name Stay at Home Dad on stage and online.

“Despite the fact that I’ll play 50–60 percent original material during a DJ set, I find that DJ sets draw more public interest than an ‘electronic’ show,” says McCabe. “It appeared very quickly that advertising my electronic sets more like I was DJing an event got more people interested in what I was doing.”

For a younger, up-and-coming act, that inherent split can be frustrating. While McCabe considers himself to be in a good spot at the moment, he thinks there is a lot of room for improvement. “Events like Chris Rogero’s emo nights and anything thrown by the Booty Boyz prove that successful events are possible, but it also shows that maybe people show up for the event as a whole and not necessarily for whoever is playing.”

McCabe’s sentiment about the event being a bigger draw than the DJ was a common complaint among DJs contacted for this piece. Even Weathersby, whose name certainly holds a lot of weight around town, occasionally finds himself in situations where, if people don’t feel like they’re going to get a dance party, the big crowds might not show up.

Wuxtry employee Nate Mitchell, who DJs as Nate From Wuxtry, is not a fan of the more popular DJ nights that draw big crowds by playing well-known hits.

“I look for DJs who expose me to stuff that is new, unconventional, obscure, rare and unusual,” says Mitchell.

“My personal taste tends to gravitate more towards the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. There are a handful of DJs who I try to support whenever possible. People like Kurt Wood, Wyatt Nicholson, Tony Chackal, Phillip Jaggar and also people like Troy Hicks that are more disco [or] house-music oriented, as well as plenty of others. [They] rarely get the big crowds, but they persevere because they have a genuine love of music. I guess I would lump myself into that category.”

For Weathersby, it’s all about studying different crowds at different venues and preparing accordingly.

“I’ve always been the type of person who adheres to the crowd on the dance floor,” he says. “At Little Kings, I

“While the rise of the digital-based DJ has let more folks into the game, it has also created a smoke screen as far as people accepting the art form of DJing,” he says. “When the average person sees someone just staring at a computer, it doesn’t appear to them that there is any artistry, and sometimes that can be true. There is an art form [in] song selection, beat matching, cutting, juggling or even more inthe-box, computer-based DJing with the use of effects and filtering.”

What’s Next?

If there’s one thing almost none of the DJs interviewed for this article had similar thoughts on, it’s the ultimate future of the Athens DJ scene. Also, I can’t not mention the help that Kai [Riedl] and the Slingshot team, as well as Gordon [Lamb] and the Athens Intensified team, have done to support the validity of DJs and electronic acts in the public’s eye recently.”

sort of feels like a different life,” says Jack Tatum, on the road somewhere between Atlanta and New Orleans. Tatum, who helped bring a new wave of bedroom-recorded indie pop to prominence with his project Wild Nothing, is reflecting on his abrupt transition from laptop auteur to internationally recognized artist.

Tatum’s story begins—at least according to music mythology—in a dorm room in Blacksburg, VA. After releasing a few demos on the internet, Tatum was discovered and signed by Captured Tracks label head Mike Sniper, who added Wild Nothing to an esteemed roster of kindred practitioners that would in time include Beach Fossils, DIIV and Mac DeMarco. Gemini, the first Wild Nothing album, which Tatum recorded by himself in said dorm room with the software GarageBand, was released in 2010, inspiring a wave of critical praise that led to extensive touring with a full band.

“That record changed my life in such a monumental way, and I still don’t know if I’ve processed it fully sometimes,” Tatum says. “I was really young. Things moved really quickly for me after that record came out, and I had to keep readjusting the level of attention that I felt comfortable with.”

Tatum expanded the project’s scope and sound for Wild Nothing’s sophomore album, Nocturne, which was recorded in a New York studio with producer Nicolas Vernhes. The album possessed a richer, fuller sound with more distinct parallels to the band’s live show, and its increased exposure prompted even more touring.

With Wild Nothing’s third full-length, Life of Pause, now under its belt, the rigorous cycle of promotion and playing has become the norm again. Despite the unrelenting schedule, though, there’s an underlying ease within the album that points towards a place of newfound comfort for Tatum.

“I think in a lot of ways, Life of Pause is a portrait of domestic life. Things were pretty normal for me after touring for Nocturne [ended], and I really needed that to happen—to become a homebody again and be in a serious relationship,” Tatum says.

That normalcy allowed Tatum to create at a relaxed pace. He expanded on the art-pop inclinations of the Empty Estate EP, which immediately followed Nocturne and served as “a necessary stepping stone” for trying out new ideas. He let some ’70s soul influences creep in and even flew to Stockholm to record with John Eriksson of Peter, Bjorn and John.

That’s not to say the writing and recording of Life of Pause was a leisurely affair; there were still the usual logistics of time, place and cost to take into account.

“It’s too terrifying for me to ever book studio time without a record being pretty

fully thought-out,” Tatum says, “so I ended up spending a long time working out kinks in New York beforehand.” The album itself, he acknowledges, is “a pretty Frankenstein record—written in New York, recorded in Stockholm and Los Angeles then mixed back in New York.

“Things deviated slightly while we were [in Stockholm],” he says, “but for the most part, I had things pretty planned out. I’m cool with a bit of improvisation, but that also leads to more dead ends sometimes, which can make you pull your hair out when you’re shelling out a ton of money on studio time.”

As the band travels the country for its third wave of touring since Life of Pause was released in February, it’s hard to say if Tatum’s ease is here to stay. “For me, this record was coming from a much happier place, but as I get older, I can’t help but question my place in the world,” he says.

“Existential melodrama.”

Regardless, he’s grateful for the path he’s traveled and knows it’s a hard one to come by these days.

“Sometimes it really is just about luck and timing, but I take an optimistic outlook,” Tatum says. “I do believe that really good music finds the right ears, eventually, more often than not. The thing I’m really grateful for is the fact that Gemini allowed me to be in the position that I’m in now— still doing what I love and exploring new ideas.” f

Riley Findleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Instrumental Exploration Plus, More Music News and Gossip

By Gordon Lamb threatsandpromises@flagpole.com EBONY & IVORY: Athens pianist and composer Riley Findley has released three recordings since August, and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re each marked with personality and texture. First, They Hear But Cannot Seem To Listen, Suite No. 1, Op. 1 is an exploration of styles that range from aggressively ambient to thinly present. The best one-two punch here is the pairing of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thayerâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everything That Has Been Said Is a Lie,â&#x20AC;? which transitions forcefully from thoughtful but plaintive acoustic piano into a much darker electric-piano trip. Next is the 18-minute long A Requiem for Melody, Drone in Strings No. 1, Op. 2, which is true to both its title and self-proclaimed inspiration from Tangerine Dream but with more drone. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a nice piece to get lost in. Around the 8:30 mark, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a subtle sense of a scream coming from the background, but this may have been an auditory illusion on my part. Finally, last month Findley released Thayer Pt. 2: You Are My Sunshine, Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 3. Reportedly, this seven-track album is a direct sequel to the aforementioned track â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thayer,â&#x20AC;? which, as a compositional feat, is impressive enough by itself. She reprises that tune on this, but surrounds it with a sense of Riley Findley deliberate love and friendship. The final track, HIGHWAY TO HULL: Have you ever walked down Hull Street â&#x20AC;&#x153;Black Dog,â&#x20AC;? is a lovely if brief rendering of the perennial on a Monday night, had your ears pleasantly shredded favorite â&#x20AC;&#x153;You Are My Sunshine.â&#x20AC;? LEAN IN, INDEED: The debut album from Athens hip hop group UnderDogs! came out this month. At 17 tracks, the release is as long and tedious as one might think. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dripping in clichĂŠs without angles, flat Chief Keef-style vocals and a general sense of irritating unpleasantness without any of the boyish prankster-y charm I think theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going for. That said, MCs Steeze0, Q.Dot and Spike Spiegel occasionally pop out with a few funny lines, and their selfproclaimed offering of this album to â&#x20AC;&#x153;savages, outcasts, weirdos, hippies and all people of diversityâ&#x20AC;? is nice enough.

The beats for â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tommy Boxers (She Like)â&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whoa!â&#x20AC;? are fairly solid, but, thing is, with vocals that are non-dynamic, non-melodic and delivered with more than a tinge of disinterest, the beats have to do the heavy lifting, and the majority of them just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. For a little while at least, Maurice Smith helped us forget about the bigot going to the White House.

One reason Georgia was so successful versus the run is because it could almost completely ignore the pass. Sean White, who was coming off a shoulder injury to his throwing arm, didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look close to 100 percent. He couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get air under his passes or throw accurately, and those problems only got worse as the game wore on and he tired.

White finished 5-for-20 for just 27 yards and an interception.

That interception was the play of the game, and probably of Georgiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s season so far. White threw a duck to a covered receiver, and Alabama grad transfer Maurice Smith simply stepped in front of it. Luckily for Georgia, Smith had a wall of Georgia players nearby to escort him into the end zone and give Georgia the only touchdown it would scoreâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and the only touchdown it would needâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;in the game.

It was the best performance Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen from the Georgia defenders in ages. They swarmed the ball like locusts and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give Auburn any breathing room. Pass, run, it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t matter. Smart and defensive coordinator Mel Tucker had the defense ready for this game. As the players on this young Georgia unit get older, I expect more performances like this. We were promised Smart would Alabamify Georgiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s defense, and it appears heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finally living up to his end of the bargain.

So everything is good in the world, right?

album and lost myself in the beats and rhymes. I watched Georgia upset Auburn, and screamed my lungs out when Smith bobbed and weaved through Auburnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s defense to score the winning touchdown. It feels great to feel normal in times like these.

But those moments never last long. It was only fleeting after the Georgia win.

The game ended, and the camera panned the crowd. With that, I remembered that Georgia went for Trump, and the majority of the 90,000-plus mostly white fans at Sanford Stadium pulled the lever for a racist demagogue. At worst they are bigots.

At best they are unconcerned with bigotry.

Then I remembered that within a mile of the celebrating throng, and perhaps even within it, are black, Muslim, Latinx, LGBTQ and female Georgia students worried about whether theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have a place in this new America that the throng chose. Then the normalcy is gone, and the worry resumes.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s difficult in these uncertain times, but we must take and cherish any moments of normalcy we come upon, because they remind us of what we stand to lose under Trumpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s regime. Have a beer with a friend and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t talk about politics. Read a good book. Watch Mo Smithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pick-six on a loop for a while. Then remember the people who stand to lose the liberty to do those things if hate wins. Then get back to fighting for whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right in your community, your country and the world. f

Considerably lighthearted and referencing a handful of â&#x20AC;&#x2122;90s pop-cultural references, the plot centers around a twomonth, cross-country road trip Peterson took with his mother, from Southern California to New York. As it dedicates a fair

interactions with peers, as well a fantasy involving a Star Trek actress. One of the most graphic daydreams depicts the pigtailed tomboy suddenly transforming into a fully-grown woman with breasts haphazardly shooting milk everywhere and a newborn baby falling outâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a moment that fully captures the anxiety of impending puberty. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I was a kid, I was just really jealous of boys. I wanted to be a boy so bad,â&#x20AC;? says Petersen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mainly what the gender identity stuff is about in the film: a denial of the puberty I was about to enter and a great fear of it as well. My mom didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do a good job preparing me for puberty. She was too busy talking about aliens.â&#x20AC;?

Unlike most films, Torrey Pines is nearly wordless. Instead, the characters speak in

amount of footage to capturing the beauty found across state linesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;glittering green ocean waves, striped canyon formations, a desert dotted with cactiâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to be distracted from the underlying severity of the situation. Though weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve caught on, as has Petersen, that there might be something a bit off with his mother, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not until she has a fender-bender and the cop runs her number that we discover how life-changing this trip truly was.

Several scenes touch on the thenblossoming transgender identity of the filmmaker, observable through subtle

mumbled gibberish, relying on vocal inflection or the occasional imageâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;tigers pouncing out of mouths or lasers shooting from eyes, for exampleâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;to convey expression.

The garbled voices of adults are not unlike those in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Peanutsâ&#x20AC;? cartoons, and can be pretty effective at humorously lightening the mood. The film approaches several topics of universal relevance, and the absence of language echoes this theme of inclusivity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are times when I wanted it to feel like the viewer is completely in the kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s world, and kids donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always listen to adults. They space out and focus on weird

Get It All Out Torrey Pines â&#x20AC;&#x2030;Is A Cross-Country, Stop-Motion Adventure

By Jessica Smith arts@flagpole.com â&#x20AC;&#x153;How do I tell the story of my mother gone crazy?â&#x20AC;? is how Your Heart Breaksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; candid folk-pop song â&#x20AC;&#x153;Torrey Pinesâ&#x20AC;? starts off, alluding to Seattle-based songwriter Clyde Petersenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s childhood experience of being raised by a mother with schizophrenia.

After recording the song in 2007 with Kimya Dawson (of The Moldy Peaches and Juno soundtrack fame), the band was approached by countless audience members who related to the complicated tribulations of caring for family members suffering from mental illness. Petersen doubles as an incredibly talented stop-motion animatorâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;creating music videos for The Thermals, Madeline Adams, Deerhoof, The Shaky Hands and many more over the last decadeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;so when the opportunity arose to create a full-length film, he decided to animate the story he was most familiar with: his own. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It felt good to fictionalize the events of my life. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve told the story to very few people over the years, so to sit down for a year and really focus on the strange and funny events of my childhood was a good activity for me,â&#x20AC;? says Petersen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some days it was really hard to focus on it so deeply. Other times it just felt like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;This is a lot of work.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; We animated between two and 10 seconds a day for a year and a half.â&#x20AC;?

Torrey Pines is ultimately a coming-of-age story that illustrates the growing pains of 12-year-old Petersen through blending recollections of experiences and imaginative childhood daydreams with an occasional bewildering hallucination. Along with coanimator Chris Looney and a team of seven internsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;including former Athenian and El HollĂ­n songwriter Dena Zilberâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Petersen animated the film using hand-painted, handcrafted sets. stuff. Everyone does that,â&#x20AC;? says Petersen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I also wanted to make a film that can travel globally without a language barrier and can be understood by a deaf and hard-ofhearing audience.â&#x20AC;?

To supplement its emphasis on visual storytelling, the film relies on its star-studded soundtrack as a method of establishing mood. Produced by Chris Walla, owner of Hall of Justice Recording Studio in Seattle and former Death Cab for Cutie guitarist, the soundtrack centers around instrumental versions pulled from Your Heart Breaksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; discography. Additional elements were woven in from pensive drone-metal band Earth, Dawson and Lori Goldston, a cellist who toured with Nirvana. Susie Kozawa, who specializes in live foley and soundscapes through her site-specific installations, contributed auxiliary sounds.

Torrey Pines premiered in its hometown with a live score performed by two dozen musicians. The smaller touring ensemble varies between cities, but for Athens will include Your Heart Breaks members Zach Burba (also of Iji), Jacob Jaffe and Petersen.

Local songstress Emileigh Ireland will kick the night off with a set of tunes.

Tender and fantastical, Torrey Pines delves into difficult memories and transforms them into something relatable. While thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no one path for managing the mental illness of a family member, or for recovering from a traumatic experience yourself, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be wise to take the advice of the final lines from the filmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s namesake song: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The shit that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been through is the reason youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re you/ And I bet someone is listening with a similar history/ Once the words are spoken and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all out in the open, it will help other people feel a lot less broken/ So open up your mouth and let it all out/ You gotta get it all out/ Just get it off your fucking chest.â&#x20AC;? f
