The good news is that you are privileged to be in a position to learn stuff and to learn from other people, and you need to balance those two endeavors. Studying is your first priority, but it can’t be your only priority. Hanging out with people is just as important, but you can’t let it pull you away from studying.

Balance. That’s what you’re learning, and it’s what you’ll always need.

A couple of guys I knew in college were smarter than I was. While I got distracted from the outset, joining too many organizations, they spent their first couple of years

in college just concentrating on their studies, really learning stuff and building their average. By their junior year, they had their studies under control, and then they started joining things and widening their circle of friends and acquaintances. That kind of discipline took them on respectively to a law degree and a PhD and great later success. I continued to live a distracted life and finally stumbled into an occupation that feeds on distraction.

OK. That’s the wisdom for this year. Read it, and pass it along. Then forget about it.

The takeaway is simply this: You are already who you’re going to be; the future is now.

Trump Drags Down Isakson The Incumbent Senator Could Find Himself Out of a Job

By Tom Crawford tcrawford@gareport.com One year ago, the political experts were sure Georgia voters would deliver the state’s electoral votes to the Republican presidential nominee and reelect Sen. Johnny Isakson to a third term.

Twelve months later, things look very different. Recent polls show Democrat Hillary Clinton is either tied or slightly ahead of Republican Donald Trump. Some of the poll analysts are starting to nudge Georgia into the “Leans Democratic� column. Those same polls also show that the Senate race is much closer than expected, with Isakson only holding a single-digit lead over Democrat Jim Barksdale.

The senator is one of the best-known names in state politics and has support from prominent Democrats like U.S. Rep. David Scott, former Gov. Roy Barnes and former Sen. Sam Nunn. “I’ve always voted for Johnny Isakson,� Scott said. “He’s my friend. He’s my partner, and I always look out for my partners.�

But Isakson was expected to be piling up a bigger lead by now. Barksdale entered the race unknown to probably 99 percent of Georgia’s voters. He hasn’t brought in many contributions, although he has been able to put $3 million in personal funds into the campaign.

The last time Isakson ran for reelection in 2010, he had a credible Democratic opponent in Mike Thurmond, a good campaigner with a decent record as the state’s labor commissioner. Isakson clobbered Thurmond by a 58-39 percent margin.

If Isakson could beat Thurmond by 19 points, he should be 20 or 25 points ahead of an opponent who’s never run for office before—but he’s not.

The only factor that really explains Isakson’s wobbly position is the presence of

Trump at the top of the Republican ticket.

Trump’s erratic behavior since the national conventions is dragging down Republican incumbents everywhere.

New Hampshire is a good example.

Clinton had been holding a three or four point lead over Trump, while Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte held a small lead over Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan in the Senate race. As the Trump campaign imploded, however, a new poll last week showed Clinton expanding her New Hampshire lead over Trump to 17 points, while Hassan pushed out to a 10-point lead over Ayotte, a Trump supporter.

Isakson is a smart enough politician to know that Trump can be poison to downballot candidates. His strategy was evident during a recent campaign swing in Cobb County, where Isakson was asked by a local reporter if he had endorsed Trump yet.

This was his answer: “I think it’s important to be for your ticket. If you’re an elected Republican, I think you have an obligation to be for your ticket. That doesn’t mean you’re blindly for your ticket, but it means you’re supportive of your ticket and you’re supportive of your party.� Nowhere in that thicket of verbiage will you find the words “Donald� or “Trump.�

Isakson has health issues to deal with as he runs for a third term. He is nearly 72 and disclosed last year that he had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system, since 2013. With enough money—Isakson has raised more than $6 million—and an obscure opponent, those kinds of issues can usually be overcome. But when you’ve got a train wreck like Donald Trump at the top of your ticket dragging everybody down, that can make things a lot tougher. f

What, Exactly, Does Voxpro Do? Plus, Uncooperative Commissioners, Free Buses and 100 Prince

By Blake Aued and John Huie news@flagpole.com When the Irish company Voxpro announced Aug. 1 it would open a “Center of Excellence” in Athens that would employ 500 people, it sounded like big news.

But the news came with little of the pomp and circumstance usually associated with major economic development announcements like Caterpillar, and curiously few details, such as the location of this “Center of Excellence” within Athens. (Vacant office space within the One Press Place building, according to Ryan Moore, director of the Athens-Clarke County economic development department.)

And what does Voxpro do, anyway? Here’s the description from the press release: “Voxpro provides a range of business services, such as multilingual customer experience and technical support solutions, trust and safety monitoring, social media management and product insight. The company works with clients from innovative tech startups to global giants, helping them scale internationally and deliver a high-quality customer experience with every interaction.”

Wondering what that even means, I reached out to Gov. Nathan Deal’s office, where a communications staffer referred me to someone at the Department of Economic Development, who referred me to Voxpro PR. Asked for clarification on what employees would be doing in this Athens facility, the Voxpro PR person replied: “Voxpro is Ireland’s largest international provider of customer experience and technical support solutions. The company manages a range of business services on behalf of its partners, such as multilingual customer experience and technical support, trust and safety activity, social media management and harnessing product insights.”

OK. Strip out the jargon, and it’s a call center where people provide tech support and make sales calls. So how much will these jobs pay? “Voxpro wages and qualification level vary according to each role,” said the PR person, Ann Marie Slattery.

I finally wrung it out of a couple of Athens-Clarke County commissioners, Andy Herod and Melissa Link, that the jobs will pay $25,000–$40,000 a year. Another person told me she’d been offered a job at Voxpro at $12 an hour.

Some of the jobs require college degrees.

Not to sound ungrateful—jobs are better than no jobs— but Athens has no lack of jobs that pay mediocre wages.

well as one of the highest poverty rates in the country. The main problem is that most of Athens’ jobs don’t pay very well. It doesn’t look like Voxpro is going to do much to fix that. [Blake Aued] Cooperative Extension: After a, well, extensive debate, the Athens-Clarke County Commission chose an office park off Atlanta Highway as the site for a new UGA Cooperative Extension office at its Aug. 2 voting meeting.

The site was among six put forward by a site-selection committee. After the University of Georgia refused to let ACC build the center on land it owns off South Milledge Avenue, the Cleveland Road site rose to the top because the county is also building a new fire station there, reducing costs for the underfunded $2.5 million SPLOST project.

Other sites would have required scaling back the project. Even so, the committee recommended sites on Lexington Road and Gaines School Road over Cleveland Road.

Citizen input on such a system has been mixed. “That’s where we got a lot of our comments, pro and con,” Lonnee said. Several hundred people have commented online or attended public meetings on the various infill proposals—an unusually high level of interest.

The suggested infill rules will be honed for the Planning Commission’s September meeting and must eventually be approved by the elected ACC commissioners.

Due to “considerable public interest” in “tiny” houses— which can be as small as 100 square feet—a review of relevant local regulations will also be developed. Now, multiple cottages as small as 450 square feet can be built on land zoned multifamily, but 600 square feet is the minimum for single-family homes, Lonnee told Flagpole.

Free Your Mind At Athens Free School, Sharing Knowledge Is a Political Act

T

he Free School movement of the 1960s is seeing a resurgence in Athens. Athens Free School, founded by a group of University of Georgia students and recent graduates, “is a learning community by and for the community,” says one of the founders, Courtney McCracken.

The first classes—a discussion of free schools and radical alternative education, and a fabric-dyeing class led by Zipporah Thompson—were held at the Lamar Dodd School of Art during McCracken’s first solo art show, “Knot for Sale.”

Born out of an education reform movement in the 1960s and ’70s, free schools are typically small and grow out of a community desire to learn and share information free from government intervention. The schools lack formal teachers or leadership, with hierarchies carefully avoided. The curriculum is whatever people are interested in.

At AFS, class choices are extensively varied, including but not limited to shortstory circles, mosquito combat, tiny houses, throat singing, knot tying, juicing, craft swaps, pupusa making, crocheting, copyrights, Spanish immersion, self-advocacy, yoga, grant writing, cyanotypes, meditation, painting, mask making and cooking with anything from yeast to yucca.

The founders—who also include Logan Shirah and Lulu Lacy—had played around with the idea of creating a free school, and by a serendipitous meeting through the Bombs Away Collective, a local anarchist group, they were able to bring their ideas together. Shirah had been a member of the Atlanta Free School, and McCracken says that “was a huge help and motivator.”

In a free school, McCracken says, you aren’t defined by your job or your place in the economy. “It’s about empowerment and teaching people to have empowerment and autonomy,” she says.

The founders have embraced free-school proponent Jonathan Kozol’s idea of living off the surpluses of universities, which are “incredibly wasteful,” McCracken says.

“UGA does have a very growth-centered mindset, getting bigger more than getting better,” Shirah says, but he thinks it’s a good place for AFS to step in. “There is a narrative around town that it’s becoming a nuisance. There’s a tension AFS can resolve a little by using their resources. And the more we can use those resources in a mutually beneficial way, the better.”

Finding creative ways to obtain materials for classes is key for AFS, since, after all, “free” is in the name. “Free skill sharing, free information sharing, that’s what it’s all about,” McCracken says. That isn’t to say money isn’t something they’re interested in, though never by means of charging for classes. “To make people pay would be against the philosophy,” Shirah says.

One way they’re pursuing funding is by applying for a grant from UGA. The money would be directed to online resources, materials for classes and possibly some compensation to those who spend time doing organizational things for the school.

“Already I’m having to do a lot less work than in the beginning,” Shirah says, because the students become the teachers.

Anyone can teach a class, whether they have expertise or not. McCracken, who received her master’s degree in fine arts from UGA, teaches what she’s aptly named “The Handy Ma’am Series,” in which she uses her sculpture expertise to teach students how to use basic tools and do simple home maintenance and improvements.

Shirah uses his art degree to teach a painting class, but stresses the importance of teaching everything and anything, not just things you get a degree in. Recognizing skills you didn’t know you had is important

in the school, he says. “When people teach, they may be a rookie, but they’re doing it for themselves just as much as for other people.”

The organic nature of allowing people the autonomy to develop a class on their own is important. However, Shirah and McCracken do have a wish list of classes they’d like to see, personally: bookbinding, computer cleaning, lamp wiring, car maintenance “beyond oil changing,” farming and paper making, among others.

One class that exemplifies a core concept of free schools is the Anarchism 101 class taught by one of the founders of the Bombs Away Collective. Political education is key, and the AFS founders firmly believe in its importance. “Sharing information freely is a political act. Instead of capitalizing on knowledge and skills, we give them freely out of mutual support and solidarity,” McCracken says. “Free education is political.

Gift economy, solidarity—it is all political.”

But they do understand that having a balance of accessible and approachable classes is important. “When it comes down to it, all of the classes are rooted in compassion, autonomy and play. Empowerment belongs somewhere in there I think, as well,” McCracken says.

The school has been growing, in terms of teachers, students and number of classes, through word of mouth, flyers and social media. (The Facebook page is facebook. com/athensfreeschool.) But the founders are wary of growing too fast. “I don’t want to judge the success by enrollment,” McCracken says. Shirah agrees: “It’s hard to measure influence. And growth isn’t the goal. We’re not interested in growing big and burning out.”

That is a danger with free schools. Part of the reason the Atlanta Free School, which Shirah was a part of and was the model for the AFS, is not up and running right now is because it grew too big, he says, and the school being spread out across the city made it difficult for students to attend.

What they do want is to bridge racial and social divides. While AFS was heavy on art school grad students in the beginning, it’s now becoming more diverse. “There are these racial divides” in Athens, Shirah says.

“It’s a way to repair damaged relationships and bring people together.”

McCracken echoes his sentiment, and is excited about the future of the school.

“Athens is the perfect ecosystem to develop what a free school should be,” she says. f

We defeated bills, passed others, built new buildings and elected new leaders. Get caught up on the news: May 11: UGA students, staff and faculty joined forces with local writers and musicians to help convince Gov. Nathan Deal to veto the “campus carry” bill, which would have legalized guns on most parts of college campuses.

Clarke County School District administrators said they are holding off on an unpopular plan to pave over a community garden at the West Broad School when the building is converted into CCSD’s new central office.

May 18: The rejuvenated Marigold Festival highlighted Winterville’s burgeoning status as a haven for artists and musicians.

June 1: John Knox won an Eastside school board seat, Toni Meadow was elected tax commissioner, and U.S. Rep. Doug Collins was sent back to Congress. Shockingly, those were the only local races on the ballot—and November won’t bring more choices.

Athens Uncharted Launches Athventures Plus, Lyndon House Launches Open Studio Program

Craig and Katzman plan on presenting many more Athventures, with no two alike. The goal is for the ongoing archive to serve as a hub for various projects by artists, writers, chefs, musicians, historians and other locals.

In addition to Athventures, the Athens Uncharted website features Jukebox, a well-rounded Soundcloud compilation of locals, including mainstays like Drive-By Truckers, Circulatory System, of Montreal and New Madrid, as well as some lesser-known acts.

There are also interviews with folk sculptor Harold Rittenberry and craftswoman Sarah Carnes, aka Ms. Creatonomics, plus Setting Solstice, a short film performed by fire dancer Ember Fox. For future projects, visit athensuncharted.com.

Dedicated to documenting the characters who make life in Athens a little more interesting, Athens Uncharted is a fairly new website for sharing creative projects in unique formats. The project is co-produced by Bowen Craig, an author and editor, and Mark Katzman, a writer and musician. With journalistic backgrounds and experiences spanning across literary and performative arenas, it seems only natural for the duo to keep a keen eye on the creative endeavors of other Athenians.

“We wanted to capture some of the stories which fall through the cracks,” says Craig. “There are so many interesting people in town doing so many interesting things that sometimes amazing narratives can get lost.”

In times like these, it’s worth considering the power of joy.

Artists and musicians, in particular, can positively affect the tone of the culture. While some channel the chaos and violence of the world into work that’s darker and more cynical, others choose to combat despair with jubilation.

Since its birth in 1994, Bay Area band Deerhoof has specialized in an intricate yet ebullient brand of rock and roll that challenges and provokes even as it swells with sunshine. Deerhoof’s music exists in a sort-of sideways reality with a central conceit: Things are never as bad as they seem.

“What passes for darkness is often just fear,” drummer Greg Saunier says. “Look at what the candidates are selling; look at what ISIS is selling… You have to laugh at the perversity of it… You rebel. You organize your life without lying, cheating and stealing. Without violence. You get together and rule by consensus, and do it with style.”

Even as America stares down the barrel of a Donald Trump presidency, Deerhoof spreads its brand of insurgent positivity. The band’s 14th full-length album, The Magic, was written and recorded in a seven-day sprint in the New Mexico desert and released earlier this year.

Saunier says the band’s method is “the most open-ended process you can have without total process disintegration.

We never know what will come out.” During the Magic sessions, the group found itself exploring hyper proto-punk, cheeky stadium-rock and other nakedly joyous sounds.

The album represents Deerhoof at its freest and finest, all spark with little in the way of deliberation. The group’s spontaneity manifests itself in thrilling ways: the brief feedback breakdown that interrupts a sunny pop number; the lite-jazz interlude that punctuates a math-rock anthem.

Love Tractor Is Up and Running Again

By Nathan Kerce music@flagpole.com In celebration of the band’s first two albums being re-released on vinyl, the original lineup of famed Athens alternative band Love Tractor is reuniting on stage for the first time in over 15 years.

Mark Cline, Mike Richmond and Armistead Wellford, along with secret “special guests”—and presumably someone, or someones, on drums—will be performing at the Georgia Theatre as part of this year’s Popfest. As easily one of the most sought-after reunions related to Athens’ 1980s golden age, this show has been teased for at least a decade.

The spirit of Love Tractor has been kept alive in the meantime by tribute acts such as Fuck Truck (a cheeky reference to the band’s original name) and We Love Tractor, which combined some of the original members with other notable local musicians.

While these acts were undeniably entertaining, there has always been a lingering desire to see the old lineup back together, especially with occasional rumors surfacing that the original core trio was meeting up every few years to write new songs.

The group’s Popfest show will consist primarily of songs from Love Tractor’s first self-titled record, as well as its follow-up, Around the Bend. These two entirely instrumental albums have long stood as some of the best examples of the “Athens sound,” and, taken together, were a defining moment in the history of college and alternative rock.

For locals or out-of-towners with even the slightest interest in the storied history of Athens music, this is set to be the must-see event of a stacked Popfest weekend.

Love Tractor plays the Georgia Theatre Saturday, Aug. 13 at 11:15 p.m.

Three of The Magic’s tracks were composed for the HBO series “Vinyl,” which needed an original song for a fictional band to play on screen. Saunier finished his in one day, then he “received an email from Ed [Rodriguez] with a song he had recorded, and one from John [Dieterich]… All three are on the album, but they don’t sound anything alike, even though we were [following] the same instructions.”

Deerhoof’s magic lies in its members’ chemistry, which allows the group to experiment while sounding only like itself, and also accounts for its longevity. Though the band may not be a household name, it’s legendary in indie circles, and has managed to continue touring and releasing music steadily—and with a DIY approach—since its inception.

“[Doing it ourselves] was a simple necessity for Deerhoof for the first seven or eight years, when everything we did lost money,” says Saunier. “But once that started to turn around, we hired a booking agent in 2003, and in 2009 a live sound engineer who travels with us in the minivan.

“We stayed DIY in other ways,” he continues. “We record and mix our own records; we manage ourselves; we stay hands-on with the record label; we work our merch table.”

It’s as much a philosophical decision as a financial one, says Saunier. “When you start outsourcing these jobs, you not only rob yourself of money, but also of experience. One of the great things about being in a traveling musical act is the chance to meet people all over the world.”

Deerhoof plays the Georgia Theatre Thursday, Aug. 11 at 12:30 a.m.

Beam a bunch of geometry proofs and homemade synth lines into the sky, and whatever comes back ought to sound pretty close to Spaceflyte. [Adam Clair]

Five Essential Releases by (or About) Daniel Johnston

By Dan Mistich music@flagpole.com While a long list of talent comprises this year’s Popfest lineup, the appearance by folk artist Daniel Johnston is notable for a number of reasons, the least of which is that he rarely performs in front of an audience.

Although Johnston spent most of his formative years in the quaint northern panhandle of West Virginia, he became an icon of indie rock outsider art after settling just outside of Austin, TX. If you’re unfamiliar with the Beatles-obsessed singer-songwriter who has spent a lifetime battling mental illness, here’s a primer featuring some of his notable works and others’ takes on his legacy.

Song: Daniel Johnston, “True Love Will Find You in the End” (1984) This is arguably Johnston’s most widely recognized tune, a to-the-point expression of unrequited love and hope that can’t help but tug on your heartstrings despite its grainy production. There’s no direct reference to the singer’s onetime girlfriend, Laurie Allen, but the song is proof that phenomenal art can be the product of ineffable pain. It should only take a few strums of Johnston’s somber guitar before you become a lifelong fan.

Cover Song: Vic Chesnutt, “Like a Monkey in a Zoo” (2004) Although “True Love” is Johnston’s most covered song (Beck, Wilco and Spiritualized have all recorded their own versions), Chesnutt’s beautifully blistered rendition of “Monkey in a Zoo” (originally released on 1980’s Songs of Pain) from the covers collection The Late Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Covered will absolutely tear you to bits. Listening to Chesnutt’s haunting version, one can’t help but wonder what a collaboration between the two artists would have sounded like if the opportunity had ever presented itself.

Documentary: The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2005) Even with a ringing endorsement from Kurt Cobain, Johnston wrote and recorded in ultra-obscurity throughout the ’80s, ’90s and early 2000s. It wasn’t until the release of this documentary that a wider audience took notice. Featuring interviews from famous fans like David Bowie, Beck, Matt Groening, Tom Waits and others, the documentary makes a compelling argument for why Johnston belongs in the canon of great artists, despite his tumultuous and sometimes heartbreaking life and career. Watch for the anecdote about Johnston attempting to crash his father’s plane during a manic episode.

Album: Daniel Johnston, Is and Always Was (2009) Many of Johnston’s earliest recordings were taped on boomboxes and reproduced on cassette by the songwriter before they ever saw a wider distribution (see Songs of Pain and Hi, How Are You?). Following an uptick of publicity in the 2000s, Johnston’s recordings became more polished and sonically sharper. Earworms like “Mind Movies” and “Queenie the Doggie” have a jangly, singalong quality that feels immediately recognizable and infinitely pure, thanks to Johnston’s childlike vocal delivery. Another Johnston staple, “I Had Lost My Mind,” also gets some sonic massaging, a testament to his ability to write reflexively about his struggles with manic depression. While it may not be Johnston’s most universally lauded record, it’s a fantastic entry point for curious newcomers.

Book: The Incantations of Daniel Johnston (2016) Blending biography with reflective prose about the underside of fame, writer Scott McClanahan takes on Johnston in a medium that the folkster has long obsessed over: graphic novels. It doesn’t hurt that the accompanying visuals, from Spanish artist Ricardo Cavolo, are equally mesmerizing and do a good job of invoking Johnston’s obsessions with demons and his songwriting’s other recurring themes. Although Johnston had little to do with the book’s creation (he’s never met McClanahan and only met Cavalo once), this stunning work is already re-igniting interest in the songwriter’s storied career.

4:45 p.m. Thursday, Little Kings Shuffle Club Pop music is defined by simplicity and straightforwardness, which makes it fertile soil for experimentation, letting the listener fall back on familiarity whenever things get a little too weird.

Big Fresh’s eclectic spin on the genre grafts together pop’s most exploratory sounds—the Kinks’ stylistic simulacra, Talking Heads’ global funkiness, the Beach Boys’ irreverence of instrumentation— into a catchy hybrid-of-hybrids that sounds organically sweet with enough sophistication to keep a more refined palate sated. Shopping 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Georgia Theatre On its 2015 album, Why Choose, up-and-coming indie act Shopping recasts the taut, rhythmic sounds of the 1980s underground, nodding overtly to influential post-punk groups like Wire, Pylon and ESG while updating that music for the modern age. The London group’s lyrics are often concerned with weighty topics— everything from gender politics to globalization—but that doesn’t mean you can’t still lose your shit dancing to Shopping’s music.

Tunabunny 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Georgia Theatre Local experimental pop mainstay Tunabunny has been quiet since the release of its 2014 album Kingdom Technology, but with a new album on the way this year, the band has resurfaced to both confound and delight. One of the primary acts signed to Popfest founder Mike Turner’s HHBTM Records, Tunabunny thrives on experimentation. Listening often feels like playing a game of popmusic Russian roulette: You never know if the group will subvert or embrace the genre’s many tropes. With the new album complete, expect to hear a lot of fresh material. [Nathan Kerce]

His Name Is Alive 11:30 p.m. Friday, Georgia Theatre In the early ’90s, experimental rock band His Name Is Alive was one of the most acclaimed acts signed to legendary independent label 4AD. The band has had its share of rough patches and hiatuses since, but it’s still managed to build quite a legacy. The group’s sound and lineup have drastically changed over the last 25 years, with guitarist Warren Defever serving as the only consistent member. Patterns of Light, HNIA’s new prog-pop album, is set for release in October, and its Popfest set will likely draw heavily from that, as well as songs from the band’s massive back catalog. [NK]

Ought 12:30 a.m. Friday, Georgia Theatre Though Montreal post-punk band Ought has been around for a little over half a decade, it broke through in 2014 with More Than Any Other Day. That album brought international attention and established a definitive sound that the band built upon on its 2015 follow-up, Sun Coming Down. Singer and guitarist Tim Darcy’s deeply personal lyrics and off-kilter, conversational singing style are paired with fierce, slow-building instrumentals to create what often sounds like someone having a mental breakdown in real time. While Ought’s songs can range from staggeringly cynical to purely hopeful, its live show is always an inspirational experience.

From Heaven to Hell Wrecking Ball Sends the Masquerade Out With a Bang

Continued gentrification in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood has pushed the venue out of its home in the old Excelsior Mill on North Avenue and into a new location in West Midtown.

Here are five acts that will commemorate the club as they rock its stages for the last time.

Heaven: Piebald (Saturday, 6:35 p.m.)

Starting in the Boston hardcore scene, Piebald shifted its sound and become one of the definitive emo bands of a generation. The group’s early albums, as well as its various single compilations, are considered classics of the genre. This reunion is one of many at this year’s Wrecking Ball, which is banking heavily on ’90s nostalgia. Expect Piebald to tear the house down upstairs on the Heaven stage, similar to Braid’s amazing performance last year.

Purgatory: Diet Cig (Saturday, 7:05 p.m.)

The New York duo of singer and guitarist Alex Luciano and drummer Noah Bowman is on the edge of breaking out. The Masquerade’s smallest stage is often used to showcase smaller local bands or touring acts just getting their feet wet. It’s not uncommon to see shows moved from Purgatory to Hell to accommodate ticket sales, a moment that feels like a rite of passage. Still, nothing beats the sometimes uncomfortable intimacy and occasionally obstructed view of Purgatory, and it should be the perfect venue for Diet Cig’s funny, wonderfully personal brand of clumsy indie-pop.

Hell: Foxing (Sunday, 5:50 p.m.)

The St. Louis emo band is no stranger to the Hell stage, which has come to be one of the premier venues for bands associated

of its base sound. The band’s show is more likely to remind you of Sigur Rós than Sunny Day Real Estate, adding a layer that doesn’t always come across on the records.

The Great Outdoors: Dinosaur Jr. and Thursday (Sunday, 6:45 and 7:45 p.m.)

While you should say goodbye to the Masquerade’s interior, the outdoor lineup is stacked, and we would be remiss to not give you a few recommendations.

First we have Dinosaur Jr., the legendary Massachusetts rock band that keeps reaching new heights. After an extended hiatus from 1997–2005, the group reunited and has since released a great string of albums.

This set will be coming directly off the release of the band’s excellent new album, Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not, and should pull heavily from that release.

Directly after Dinosaur Jr. is Thursday.

After a tumultuous breakup in 2011, the influential post-hardcore band was seemingly fractured beyond repair. However, after a lot of negotiating, Wrecking Ball seemed to mend whatever had broken between the band members, initiating a last-minute reunion. Only a few shows have been announced, and Wrecking Ball will be your first chance to see Thursday in over half a decade. f

The Powder Room Preps Second LP Plus, More Music News and Gossip

HEAD TO HEAD: Kinda-famous Athens improviser and composer Killick has completed his second collaborative album with totally-famous improviser and composer Henry Kaiser. Both played guitar on Xenosynchronicity II. The pair first worked together on 2012’s Nikola Tesla High School.

Killick says of this new record, “We played prismatic textures and moods, reflecting unabashed (ir)reverence for the styles and stylings of the greats, and for the guitar itself, simply strings tensioned across a board, but so, so much more.” That last bit may be a hyperbolic but, in any case, it is a much lighter and airy-sounding record than the duo’s previous one—perhaps not quite as perceptibly aggressive but equally pointed. CONSOLATION PRIZES: Even though Athens band Velocirapture isn’t really a thing anymore, you can grab a hold of a lot of its history via the newly promoted album VRAP. I started hearing word of this a couple of

people who were genuine fans of the band.”

YES, DEAR, BUT IS IT ART?: Although Meth Wax is no more, project leader Daniel Tanghal hasn’t exactly retired. After hinting at “returning to music someday,” that day came about a month later. He’s just released a new solo album named LSD Snuff Film, his second solo record this year. It’s pretty dang different than the last one, February, released in, uh, February. On that outing, everything was melodic, relatable and all-around tangible. On this new one, Tanghal hits the third rail from the word “go.” It’s loose, it barely acknowledges the existence of rock and roll, and it often intentionally unhinges itself. None of which is to say it’s bad. Far from it. It’s a cool reach of a record that, while it doesn’t always succeed, is a nice set of tunes colored way outside previous defined lines. Also, fans of Tanghal’s older work will still find hints of direct melodicism on tracks like “Femur Lampshade” and “Vegan Cheat Day.” Check it out at danieltanghal.bandcamp.com. f

Summer 2016 Round-Up What You May Have Missed in Local Food News

By Hillary Brown food@flagpole.com Summer is the quietest time of year for restaurants in Athens and, along with the end of the calendar year, the most likely time for them to close. Folks planning on a big splash in the fall, when students and football fans return, might open a new venture a few weeks before August to work out some details before being slammed with customers. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a long way of saying that, while some things changed on the Athens food scene between early May and the end of July, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good bit more thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right on the horizon.

Among the places that closed was the Cafe on Prince, formerly inside Piedmont College, which technically shut its doors at the end of April but did so quietly.

Transmet West, after trying to make a go of it under new ownership, folded, and Tim Piccoloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eponymous restaurant in Watkinsville closed, reopening as Bella Noche, a Latin-Italian fusion eatery. The Joshua L. Jones

Taqueria El Agave

Athens branch of Asian chain Tin Drum, in the Beechwood shopping center, by Menchieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, closed. Etienne Brasserie downtown papered up its windows and stopped answering its phone, and Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bar-B-Q in Lexington, one of the best pork sources around for generations, stopped doing business.

Although Streets is no longer to be found, the Athens food-truck scene ticked up a little bit, with Holy Crepe, Taza, the new Da Munchiezz and Kona Ice holding regular events every other Wednesday, sometimes at the Jittery Joeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s roaster on Barber, sometimes in the Classic Centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pavilion on Foundry Street. Loosened regulations appear to be slowly having an effect, and trucks can now set up at City Hall on Thursdays. Other itinerant food businesses can be found at the Athens Farmers Market and West Broad Farmers Market.

Hankie Pie is selling sweet and savory tiny and full-sized pies at the latter on Saturday mornings.

Epps Bridge Centre, the new outdoor mall in Oconee County, continued to add food options, including a location of quick-service Tex-Mex franchise Diabloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Southwest Grill. This month will mark the opening of something called Woks Up, a fast-casual stir-fry place that hopes to franchise its concept, and Bone Island Grillhouse, a seafood restaurant with another location in Eatonton. Lighthouse Seafood, formerly on the Eastside and then in Statham, opened up on Vine Street, in the strip mall there. El Azteca, on Oconee Street, was replaced by Taqueria El Agave, which is significantly better. Over in Madison, Farmview Market, a fancy localeats grocery store and butcher, opened, with a restaurant serving breakfast and lunch.

On the Eastside, Craft Public House, a gastropub with nice cocktails, is open in the Ansonborough development at Gaines School Road and Cedar Shoals Drive. Not yet finished is a restaurant called Cumberland Island Cafe, inside a planned Flash Foods gas station/convenience store at the corner of Lexington and Gaines School roads, where Williams Hardware was.

Downtown, Zombie Coffee and Donuts hosted huge crowds its opening week, with its customizable doughnut toppings and iced coffee made with coffee ice cubes. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sure to be popular with students. Cinnaholic, a franchise making gourmet vegan cinnamon rolls, is due to open soon in the Georgia Heights building at Hull and Broad streets. Barberitos will open another location on Highway 29 near Athens Tech, and Hungry Howieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, a pizza franchise focusing on flavored crusts, will open on Baxter Street by Wingster.

Siri Thai is tweaking its original location in the Bottleworks to more of a quickservice model but hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t implemented the changes yet, and The Pine in Five Points is adding a bar underneath its space, to be called The Root and open this month.

Finally, Shae and Ryan Sims (both ex-Five & Ten, individually ex-a bunch more places) will open Donna Changâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, making gourmet versions of Americanized Chinese food, in the Henrietta building this fall, adding an exciting option to Five Points.

The castâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Steve Carell, Parker Posey, Blake Lively, Corey Stoll, Ken Stott and Jeannie Berlinâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;is acceptably strong, if not outstanding by Allen standards, and the production design is top-notch. No surprises are in store, and nowadays, those unexpected moments and performances are all that elevates one Allen movie above the rest.

DCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Suicide Squad Falls Flat Plus, a New Woody Rom-Com and Kevin Spacey as a Cat

NINE LIVES (PG) Why did Barry Sonnenfeld direct Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Garner and Christopher Walken in a movie that should have been released in the mid-â&#x20AC;&#x2122;90s? Spacey stars as workaholic mogul Tom Brand, who does not take time for his second wife, Lara (Garner), or daughter, Rebecca (Malina Weissman). When he finally decides to buy Rebecca the cat she has been asking for, Tom winds up trapped in the cat thanks to Walkenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strange cat whisperer.

Other than the memories of Gremlins conjured by Walkenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pet store, Nine Lives offers nothing to recommend it. An attempt to capitalize on the success of viral cat videos, the family comedy could at least have forgone CGI and shown a real cat in humorous situations. Watching a fake cat get drunk on scotch is worse than watching Garfield gorge himself on lasagna. Or, at least, it is no better. f

Meyer presents “Within,” an exhibition exploring the interplay between disparate inspirations, including abstract forms, minimalism, music and communication. The artist’s work is created by assembling and carving solid domestic hardwoods, each time responding to the piece’s natural knots, crevices and other unique markings. Rusted nails and brads are occasionally incorporated before layering on natural milk paint and wax, resulting in earth-toned wall sculptures with deeply grooved geometric patterns. The smooth lines combine with textured surfaces to create forms that are simultaneously rustic and contemporary.

By Bonita Applebum advice@flagpole.com One of my best lady friends needs to couch-surf for the next couple of weeks until she can move into her new place (I hate the college-studenttailored leasing environment here!) and I have a whole extra room that I’d love to offer to her, but the thing is that her boyfriend, a total scumbag, would have to come with her.

She and I have been great friends for a few years now, and I hate seeing her waste so much money on Airbnbs and hotel rooms, but when it comes to her man, I just can’t. He does the kind of drugs that no one wants around their home, and I’ve never seen anyone drink so much in my life. She’s a real party girl too (and so am I), but I have to draw a line somewhere! I don’t think there’s anything wrong with smoking a joint or two, but his drug use has gotten them into some really hairy situations in the past, and I’m not trying to have that around me. Like, they’ve had drug dealers show up to wherever they are and shake them down for money he owes, and most of the time it comes out of her pocket because she’s the only one who works.

I can’t deal with this guy at all, but my friend is in a real bind. I’m starting to feel bad and like I’m abandoning my homegirl.
