Page 1

2026 – 2027

Exploring the Enduring Influence of the

Gilded Age The Flagler Museum preserves one of America’s most significant Gilded Age landmarks, but its mission extends beyond preserving the past. Through exhibitions, lectures, music, and public programs, the Museum explores the ideas, innovations, and individuals that transformed America—and continue to shape our world today. The 2026–2027 season examines how vision can change a nation. From the City Beautiful movement and Henry Flagler’s development of Florida to the emergence of modern luxury and contemporary conversations about innovation and leadership, the season explores the enduring influence of transformative ideas. A reimagined Music Series brings another dimension to this exploration, using the House’s historic spaces and instruments to connect its layered past with the music and cultural life of today.

AMERICA TAKES THE STAGE:

From the White City to Whitehall ON VIEW NOVEMBER 10, 2026 – MAY 30, 2027

In the summer of 1893, Chicago unveiled the World’s Columbian Exposition, a “White City” of grand neoclassical buildings, innovative technology, and manicured landscapes that declared America’s arrival as a cultural equal to Europe. Designed by architect Daniel H. Burnham and landscape visionary Frederick Law Olmsted, the Fair attracted 27 million visitors seeking the wonder of a meticulously crafted American dream. Henry Flagler was watching. A decade later, he would transpose that vision southward, creating Palm Beach as an American resort destination for wealthy northern travelers seeking escape from the cold. Using his

railroad empire and grand hotels as infrastructure, Flagler positioned himself at the center of his own creation and, in 1902, built Whitehall as his permanent residence, constructing it in the architectural language of the Fair itself. Both the White City and Whitehall were exercises in curated fantasy: temporary and permanent monuments to American ambition, wealth, and aspiration. Both drew on architecture and landscape as tools of persuasion, transforming raw land into destinations that felt timeless and European, yet distinctly American. Guest curated by Mosette Broderick, author, historian,

and Professor of Architecture at New York University, the exhibition features loans from the Art Institute of Chicago Archives and The Wolfsonian-FIU. America Takes the Stage: From the White City to Whitehall explores how the architectural ideals and innovative spirit of Chicago’s Fair found enduring expression in Flagler’s vision for Palm Beach.

“Both the White City and Whitehall were exercises in curated fantasy.” America Takes the Stage: From the White City to Whitehall is made possible by lead support from Northern Trust. Generous support is provided by Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Henry, with additional support from Templeton Advisors.

“Their artistry reflects the ambition, innovation, and changing tastes that helped define the Gilded Age.” Boucheron (French, founded 1858). Scent Bottle, ca. 1903. Crystal amethyst, enamel, glass, and metal; 7×2.5×2.5 cm (2 3/4 × 1 × 1 in.). Flagler Museum, Palm Beach, Florida, W-3989.

In the final decades of the nineteenth century, extraordinary wealth and extraordinary craftsmanship found each other across the Atlantic, and the result was a revolution in jewelry design that continues to shape how we understand beauty, luxury, and self-expression today. At the height of the Gilded Age, the most ambitious American families crossed the ocean in search of European titles and Parisian luxury, commissioning tiaras, pearl necklaces, and corsage ornaments from the great houses of Place Vendôme that announced their arrival on the world stage. Gilded Age Jewelry: The Making of Modern Luxury brings together exceptional loans from major international institutions and private collections to explore this transatlantic exchange in all its richness. Curated by guest curator Carol Woolton, jewelry historian and author, in collaboration with the Museum’s Chief Curator Campbell Mobley, and designed by acclaimed style and design editor Robert Rufino, the exhibition unfolds across six thematic sections. Among the highlights are extraordinary creations by the great jewelry houses of the period, including Boucheron, Tiffany & Co., and Cartier. Significant loans from leading museums include The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Exceptional works from private collections, including the Albion Art Jewellery Institute, the Al Thani Collection, and Neil Lane, further enrich the exhibition. Together, these remarkable jewels reflect the artistry, ambition, innovation, and changing tastes that helped define the Gilded Age and establish the foundations of modern luxury.

THE WHITE CITY AND THE MAKING OF MODERN AMERICA:

An Alternate History BY GERALD LARSON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2026 5:30 PM COCKTAILS | 6:00 PM LECTURE

FROM CHICAGO TO PALM BEACH:

The Legacy of the 1893 World’s Fair BY GEOFFREY BAER WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2026 5:30 PM COCKTAILS | 6:00 PM LECTURE

PBS television host and Chicago historian Geoffrey Baer takes audiences on a virtual tour of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition and its breathtaking “White City.” Designed by Daniel Burnham and legendary landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the Fair was a wonderland of architecture, planning, and progress – one that largely vanished within a year of its closing. Its influence, however, endured. Baer will trace how the Fair inspired the City Beautiful movement and transformed the way cities were imagined and designed, with a legacy that can still be seen at Whitehall and throughout Palm Beach. Along the way, he will explore some of the Fair’s more unexpected contributions to American life, from the Ferris wheel to familiar products introduced there, revealing how an ephemeral exposition left an extraordinary and lasting imprint on the modern world.

18

LECTURES & CONVERSATIONS | AMERICA TAKES THE STAGE

Gerald Larson, Professor Emeritus of Architecture at the University of Cincinnati and author of The Skyscraper and the White City, offers a provocative alternate history of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. Larson will explore architect John Wellborn Root’s original—and unrealized—vision for the Fair: a colorful, architecturally diverse environment oriented toward Lake Michigan that would allow visitors to encounter competing visions of American architecture. Root’s sudden death in 1891 changed everything. His partner, Daniel Burnham, instead created the unified, classically inspired ensemble of stark white facades that became the celebrated “White City.” Drawing on his extensive research into Root’s work, Larson will examine why Root’s ideas were abandoned and how that decision shaped the Fair’s legacy. He concludes with a provocative question: Had Root lived, might he, rather than Burnham, have become the “Father of American city planning”?

“An ephemeral exposition left an extraordinary and lasting imprint on the modern world.” C. J. Taylor, “Success to the Fair,” 1893, in World’s Fair Puck No. 1, Keppler & Schwarzmann, 6-7. Flagler Museum Collection.

DESIGNING THE AMERICAN DREAM:

Then & Now BY ALICE RAWSTHORN TUESDAY, JANUARY 19, 2027 5:30 PM COCKTAILS | 6:00 PM LECTURE

Award-winning design critic and author Alice Rawsthorn—described by MoMA design curator Paola Antonelli as “the best design critic in the entire world”—brings an international perspective to the enduring legacy of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. Based in London, Rawsthorn was a foreign correspondent and architecture critic for the Financial Times before writing a weekly design column for The New York Times. Her books, including Design as an Attitude and Hello World: Where Design Meets Life, have been published in more than a dozen languages. At the Flagler Museum, Rawsthorn will explore the Fair’s impact in its own time and its continuing influence on design, architecture, art, and technology. Looking from the White City to the present, she will consider how its ambitious vision of the future resonates with the profound transformations occurring today in our lives, values, and ecology.

CAPITAL AND CULTURE BY KATHERINE HOWE AND T.J. STILES WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3, 2027 5:30 PM COCKTAILS | 6:00 PM LECTURE

What did it take to build one of America’s great fortunes, and what happened to the families, institutions, and society transformed by that wealth? Katherine Howe, co-author with Anderson Cooper of Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty, and T.J. Stiles, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt, come together to explore the extraordinary creation and consequences of wealth during the Gilded Age. Drawing on the rise of the Vanderbilt dynasty and the sweeping economic changes that followed the Civil War, the discussion examines the entrepreneurs, industries, and financial forces that reshaped the nation. It also explores how new fortunes translated into social influence, cultural patronage, magnificent homes, and extraordinary jewels that became symbols of status and ambition. Beyond the glamour of the period lies a more complex story of opportunity, inequality, transformation, and the legacy of an era that continues to shape American life.

Gilded Age Jewelry: The Making of Modern Luxury explores a remarkable period when America’s rising fortunes and the artistry of Europe’s great jewelers helped redefine the meaning of luxury. Through extraordinary jewels and the stories behind them, the exhibition reveals how jewelry became an expression of personal identity, social ambition, and changing ideas of beauty— establishing a legacy that continues to influence the world of luxury today.
