PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Members, Contributors, Sponsors, and Grantors: On behalf of the Museum’s Trustees and Staff, thank you for your support throughout the past year. Your generosity makes possible our stewardship of Whitehall and the Museum’s many excellent programs.

Attendance in 2024 set new records, with on-site visitors from more than 60 countries. Exhibitions received rave reviews from audiences and scholars alike, while the Museum’s Lecture Series, Music Series, and Bluegrass Concert were all well attended by members at every level.

The Board of Trustees is proud of the Museum’s many accomplishments and grateful beyond measure for the broad support received in 2024. We thank John Blades for the success of the past year and for his commitment over the past 25 years.

This is an exciting time for the Museum as we welcome Amanda Skier’s new leadership. The Museum is well poised to take on a new season of dynamic programming, and we look forward to all that 2025-2026 has in store.

O

nce again, in 2024 the Flagler Museum enjoyed its best year on record, in terms of attendance, the success of its many programs, and the support of its many Members, Grantors, Contributors, and Sponsors.

Visitation to the Museum increased at a rate more than 50% greater than the growth of tourism to Palm Beach 2

County, with about 60% of those visitors coming from outside Palm Beach County and about 70% visiting for the first time. As it has for nearly all of its 65 years, the Flagler Museum continues to attract a very large proportion of first-time visitors, who come from every state in the Union and more than 60 countries.

Member, Contributor, Grant, and Sponsorship support all grew

substantially in 2024, all of which makes possible the upkeep of this National Historic Landmark and its many programs.

While the Museum’s primary program and mission will always be one of serving those visitors who come from all fifty states and more than 60 countries to see Whitehall and learn about Henry Flagler and America’s Gilded Age, the Museum enjoys a very active schedule beyond the programming for the general public, with special after-hour programs for its higher level Members and many Member-hosted private events.

In its 25th year, the Flagler Museum Music Series continued to attract the best chamber music groups whose recitals were regularly featured on National Public Radio’s Performance Today. Recitals by the Ulysses Quartet, violinist Michael Shaham accompanied by Sheng-Yuan Kuan, the Beo String Quartet, the Aznavoorian Sisters, and the Black Oak Ensemble were featured in the 2024 Flagler Museum Music Series.

As it has for decades now, the Museum mounts two exhibitions annually, one in the Winter that focuses on the art of the Gilded Age, and one in the fall that focuses on a historical subject from the Gilded Age. The 2024 winter exhibition, Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau, featured a large number of impressive works by illustrator and artist Alphonse Mucha, and the fall exhibition, In the Golden Dreamland of Winter: Henry Flagler’s FEC Hotel Company, explored the extensive hotel system Henry Flagler created in Florida that helped make Florida the tourism Meca it is today.

The theme of the Museum’s everpopular Whitehall Lecture Series in 2024 was the Unlikely Titans of Industry & Commerce: From Modest Beginnings to Phenomenal Success, with lectures on Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse, J. C. Penney, John Wanamaker, and Frank Winfield Woolworth.

Thanks to the generosity of Museum Trustee George Matthews, for 13 years the Flagler Museum has hosted some of the very best Bluegrass groups in the world. The Bluegrass 6

in the Pavilion concerts help raise funds in support of the Museum’s education programs. The Kody Norris Show and The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys performed for a sold-out crowd in 2024.

The Museum’s Beaux-Arts Café was rebranded as the Railcar No. 91 Tea Room, and its capacity to serve the number of the Museum’s visitors was dramatically increased. And the special Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day Teas in the Rail Car No. 91 Tea Room continue to be popular with the Museum patrons and visitors.

The Whitehall Society’s Mixing It Up was hosted on a beautiful evening in the Museum’s Cocoanut Grove, with entertainment by The Lubben Brothers.

As has been the case for years, the Museum’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt was sold out as hundreds of children enjoyed searching for eggs, having their picture taken with the Easter Bunny, and engaging in a variety of activities.

As it has since the Museum was founded 65 years ago, the Holidays were celebrated with the lighting,

by Henry Flagler’s youngest descendants, of the Christmas Tree in Whitehall’s Grand Hall. In the last few days before Christmas, many enjoyed the Museum’s Holiday Evening Tours.

Conservation and restoration work is always ongoing at the Museum.

The restoration of the ceiling over the Grand Staircase was one of several major projects undertaken this year, but the restoration of Whitehall’s Satinwood Dining Room was by far the most interesting restoration project undertaken by the Museum in years. For well over a century, the fact that the Dining Room is the largest and most elaborate Satinwood Room that has ever been, or ever will be, built was hidden by a very dark stain added during the hotel period. However, the return and restoration of the Dining Room’s original furniture brought to light the fact that not only was the furniture made of Satinwood, but the wall paneling and massive fire mantle were as well. The restoration of the Dining Room completed during the summer completely transformed and returned the room to its original appearance, which until then had not been seen by anyone living today. The quality of the craftsmanship, the rarity of the material, and the cost of production makes the Dining Room not only irreplaceable, but certainly one of, if not, the most important rooms of the period.
