Calendar june A summertime tradition: Twenty versions of the American flag that flew over our country during Henry Flagler’s lifetime (1830-1913) went on display in June, starting on the 14th (Flag Day). The display, which includes the current version of the flag, will be exhibited inside the Flagler Kenan Pavilion through July 4th.

Kelly M. Hopkins Steps Into President Role The Flagler Museum is pleased to announce that its trustees have recently elected Mrs. Kelly M. Hopkins to be the third President of the Flagler Museum, following her father, George G. Matthews who has served as the Museum’s President for the past 42 years, following his mother, Jean Flagler Matthews after her death in 1979.

It was Mrs. Matthews, granddaughter of Henry M. Flagler, legendary Florida developer and builder of WhiteMr. George G. Matthews hall, who founded the Museum in 1959 and served as President for its first 20 years.

In addition to President, Mr. Matthews has also served the Museum as a trustee for the past 63 years, an extraordinary long combined tenure, quite probably unmatched among the museums of the world. He plans to continue his service as a trustee of the Museum.

During his tenure as President, he oversaw the major restoration of the Museum, completed under the outstanding direction of the

Museum’s then Executive Director, John Blades. This process involved over two dozen capital projects, the Museum’s designation as a National Historic Landmark, its accreditation of and reaccreditations by the American Alliance of Museums, and the award of the prestigious Ross Merrill Award for conservation. Only three other institutions in the nation have received all four forms of national recognition.

Among the many new programs, exhibitions and additions to the Museum that Mr. Matthews was responsible for was his popular Bluegrass concert series held in the Museum’s Flagler Kenan Pavilion.

Always sold out, the concerts have become a welcome and innovative addition to the local music scene.

Mrs. Hopkins has served for 23 years as a Trustee of the Flagler Museum and was the Founder of its Whitehall Society. She is a Hull Fellow, Class of 2013, through the South Eastern Council of Foundations. She also serves as a trustee of the Relgalf Charitable Foundation, the Roaring Gap Foundation, and served two terms on the Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

in education from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and a Master of Science in organizational development from McColl School of Business at Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was an elementary school teacher in the Charlotte Mecklenburg school system for six years.

Mrs. Hopkins is married to Rick Hopkins, also a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Hopkins have two teenage children who live with them in Palm Beach and Charlotte.

More Changes in Store for the Museum Store Next Season Shoppers can expect to see some changes to the Museum’s retail operations over the next several months, according to new Store and Café Manager Mark Johnson. Plans are in the works to rebrand the store for the com-

ing season as H. M. Flagler and Co. Along with the name change, patrons will find new products inspired by both Flagler and Whitehall, from clothing to décor to gifts, and a focus on sourcing American-made products.

Johnson, a Florida native, recently joined the Museum staff after stints with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona, and the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Texas.

Completed 133 years ago for the 1889 Exposition Universelle celebrating the centennial of the French Revolution, Eiffel’s Tower was widely criticized and disliked by nearly all the luminaries of the day.

A Committee of 300 wrote an open letter decrying what they saw as a monstrosity, saying: We, writers, painters, sculptors, architects and passionate devotees of the hitherto untouched beauty of Paris, protest with all our strength, with all our indignation in the name of slighted French taste … imagine for a moment a giddy, ridiculous tower dominating Paris like a gigantic black smokestack, crushing under its barbaric bulk Notre Dame, the Tour Saint-Jacques, the Louvre, the Dome of les Invalides, the Arc de Triomphe, all of our humiliated monuments will disappear in this ghastly dream.

Fortunately, Eiffel didn’t listen to his many critics. Inspired by the Latting Observatory, a tower built in New York City as part of the 1853 Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations that at 290 feet was the tallest building in the United States, Eiffel’s Tower would reach the height of nearly 1,000 feet, more than three times that of the Latting Observatory.

There were many challenges along the way to the completion of his tower, including the fact that Gustave Eiffel had to personally fund half the cost of its construction. However, instead of the terrible blight on the City his critics feared it would be, Eiffel’s tower became the international symbol of The City of Lights and today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lessons in Leadership from the Gilded Age

A very talented engineer, Eiffel went on to design many other structures, including the armature that supports the Statue of Liberty. His studies in aerodynamics earned him a Samuel P. Langley Gold Medal for Aerodromics from the Smithsonian Institution, which Alexander Graham Bell presented to him.

It’s easy to be a critic, but it takes real vision, courage, and steadfast persistence, often in the face of overwhelming challenges, to make a lasting difference.

Missing Master Bathroom Needle Shower to Be Reinstalled

This Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company Rib Cage Needle Shower (top) is nearly identical to Whitehall’s original Master Bathroom shower (bottom).

The Museum acquired this very rare Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company Rib Cage Needle Shower made of brass with nickel plating as a replacement for Whitehall’s original fixture, which was removed during the hotel era. It stands at nine feet tall and is 39 inches in diameter.

During the Gilded Age, showers were often built into athletic clubs, gyms and public bath houses — places typically utilized by men. While showers were uncommon in homes until the 1920s, the Master Bathroom at Whitehall, which was completed in 1902, included a needle shower made by Clow & Sons.

Also known as a needle bath or rib shower, needle-thin jets of water sprayed through small holes in the shower’s curved brass pipes, or ribs. The model installed at Whitehall also included an overhead spray and an upper ring for a shower curtain. The valves and taps, or knobs, were designed to adjust both the temperature of the water (determined by a thermometer attached to a “mixing chamber,” or mixing valve) and the water pressure. Whitehall’s original shower and its newer replacement were designed to sit in a porcelain basin.

Progr am Recaps: February & March

Music Series Held on Tuesday evenings between February 1st and March 8th, the 2022 Music Series featured classical chamber and jazz performances by awardwinning musicians who teach at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music and their students.

Ticketholders were invited to preconcert receptions which were held in the Grand Hall and in the West Room. The chamber music

performances were held in the Grand Ballroom, while the jazz performances were staged in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion.

Together, at the Table ‘Food Talks’ Two lectures on Southern Foodways were presented in February, and are available for viewing online at www. flaglermuseum.us/watch-lectures 6

Valentine’s Day Tea Service The Café des Beaux-Arts served its annual Valentine’s Day Tea Service on Sunday, February 13th, in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion.

Tables were set with red linens and Whitehall Collection china, and adorned with spring flowers.

A harpist filled the space with romantic music during the two seatings at Noon and 2 pm.

Mixing It Up: A Celebration of Cocktail Culture The Whitehall Society’s annual event in support of the Museum’s educational programming for children featured curated cocktails and live entertainment, including a performance by Afrique Ngozi Dance and Drum.

Easter Egg Hunt & Easter Bunny A sold-out crowd of 1,000 adults and children took part in the Easter festivities on Saturday, April 16th.

Children of all ages participated in two age-appropriate hunts. Families also took photos with the Easter Bunny as well as silly selfies using props at a special photo station.

Bluegrass in the Pavilion The Tim Raybon Band and High Fidelity entertained another sold-out crowd on April 23rd.

Mother’s Day Tea Service On Sunday, May 8th, the Café des Beaux-Arts reopened one last time this season for its Mother’s Day Tea Service, which was held in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion. Every table was filled for the two seatings offered, and every Mom received a commemorative charm as a gift.

Founder’s Day On June 5th each year, the Flagler Museum celebrates its anniversary by opening to the public free of charge in honor of the Museum’s founder, Jean Flagler Matthews. This year’s program was well attended, as almost 2,000 visitors passed through the historic wrought iron gates to tour Whitehall’s first and second floor, as well as Railcar No. 91 in the Flagler Kenan Pavilion.
