Fall 2025

Dear Alumni, Family and Friends of Flagler College,

We’ve all done it. Someone praises us for a good deed, and we reply, “Oh, it’s nothing.”

But your thoughtfulness is far from nothing. It is, in fact, everything. It brightens dark days. It gives us hope. It lets our humanity—our love for one another—shine forth every day.

Because of you, at Flagler College we can equip our students and faculty with everything they need to succeed. Students can engage in an intellectual, social and personal transformation—and meet their future head on.

Thank you!

We have wonderful news: Your dedication to Flagler College can be never-ending. You can create a legacy so your values last for generations to come.

How? Through your estate plan. When thoughtful donors like you make your values everlasting with a legacy gift, it allows Flagler College to look beyond today.

The first step toward sharing your values is writing them down. Our resource, 7 Questions to Help Build Your Legacy, will help you do just that. Request this FREE guide using the enclosed reply card today.

Your answers will both help your loved ones better understand your passions and help you answer the ultimate question, “How do I want to be remembered?”

We hope our enclosed newsletter, which includes the inspiring story of Jean Cochran, helps you see how much good you could do through a legacy gift. Jean believes education moves humanity forward and hopes her gift empowers students and faculty for the future. “Education is the answer to everything,” she says.

Thank you again for your enduring commitment. It’s a joy to have you as part of the Flagler community. It would be an honor for us to be a part of your legacy.

Sincerely,

Planning for the Future

Jean Cochran: MOVING HUMANITY FORWARD THROUGH EDUCATION

For Jean Cochran, education isn’t just a path to personal growth. It’s a force that moves humanity forward. Inspired by her own life-changing travel experiences in her 20s, Jean has chosen to leave a lasting legacy at Flagler College by establishing two endowed funds through her trust.

The Jean M. Cochran Endowed Study Abroad Scholarship will support students with financial need who wish to participate in study abroad or international immersive learning experiences. She was moved to support this initiative after seeing a Flagler study abroad brochure and reflecting on how travel had shaped her own worldview and values.

She is also funding the Jean M. Cochran Endowed Fund for Scholarly and Creative Excellence, which will support faculty through grants for research, travel, professional development, curriculum development and other faculty initiatives. Her goal is to help Flagler attract and retain outstanding professors, while supporting their continued enthusiasm for teaching.

Jean and her husband, Vaughn, co-own two successful businesses and have strong ties to Flagler through Vaughn’s service on advisory boards. Jean’s involvement grew as she engaged with Flagler’s mission and leadership. She felt Flagler was an institution she could trust. “I believe in the integrity and longevity of the College and its administration,” Jean says.

Now a proud member of the Henry M. Flagler Heritage Society (which recognizes individuals who name the College as a beneficiary of a bequest, estate plan or other planned gift), Jean hopes her future gift will empower students and faculty for generations to come. “Education is the answer to everything,” she says. “It solves problems. It moves humanity forward.”

FOREVER AND A DAY

Would you like to extend your values, like Jean did, by making a gift to Flagler College that will last indefinitely? Consider establishing an endowment. It’s a powerful way to show your support, while also realizing tax benefits for your kindness.

To create an endowment, you make a gift that Flagler carefully invests. Then, each year a small portion of the earnings from the endowment is used to meet your charitable goals by awarding scholarships or grants to faculty members, for example. The rest of the fund remains invested to keep it healthy and growing far into the future. Here are some typical questions and answers about this type of gift.

What’s the best way to fund an endowment? There are different options. You can fund it today with gifts of cash or appreciated securities, or establish the endowment after your lifetime with gifts of retirement plan assets or life insurance benefits.

Who decides how my endowment will be used? You do. You may restrict your endowment to a particular cause or purpose, or you could provide unrestricted funds, which means the annual earnings from the fund may be directed to meet the most pressing needs of the College.

How can I be certain my wishes will be honored? To ensure that your gift is used according to your wishes, your charitable intentions are put in writing to ensure they are clearly understood and faithfully carried out. HOW DO YOU
