Flagler forward THE CAMPAIGN FOR FLAGLER COLLEGE

IMPACT REPORT 2021-2026

Flagler Forward: The Campaign for Flagler College reflects the enduring spirit of a community that believes in the promise of Flagler College. The investments made through this campaign are expanding the Flagler of today while propelling us to a new level of opportunity and momentum. We are not simply moving forward, we are building forward, with confidence in our future and a clear sense of what Flagler can become.” — President John A. Delaney

Dear Esteemed Donors and Colleagues, As we celebrate the completion of Flagler Forward: The Campaign for Flagler College, I am filled with gratitude for what we have accomplished together. Our first comprehensive fundraising campaign has become the most ambitious and successful philanthropic effort in Flagler College’s history. Between the State of Florida and private philanthropy, our community surpassed its initial goals and raised more than $155 million to strengthen the people, places, and programs that define the Flagler experience. This achievement is far more than a number. It is an investment in generations of students whose lives will be shaped by the opportunities your generosity makes possible. It is a powerful affirmation of what we can accomplish when alumni, parents, faculty, staff, trustees, and friends unite behind a shared purpose. And it is a legacy that will endure in every student who discovers new possibility, every faculty member who inspires lifelong curiosity, and every graduate who leaves Flagler prepared to lead a life of purpose and service. Because of your support, scholarships are opening doors for talented students from every background while endowed professorships are elevating our institutional prestige and attracting the finest faculty. Across campus, transformative investments—including the restoration of Ponce Hall, the expansion of Pollard Tennis Center, and the launch of the Modular Science Lab, Brown Innovation Center and Deagan Archaeology Lab—are providing reimagined spaces where students learn, create, compete, discover, and build lifelong networks. Together, these investments are expanding what a Flagler education can make possible. Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of Flagler Forward is what it has inspired in our community. Thousands of donors came together to champion the future of this remarkable institution, and every gift, regardless of size, advanced our mission. Each reflects the values that have defined Flagler since its founding: academic excellence, personal attention, community engagement, and an unwavering commitment to student success. The pages that follow celebrate the generosity, vision, and collective purpose that made this historic campaign possible. They also mark the beginning of a story that is still being written. The impact of Flagler Forward will continue to be felt in the lives of our students, the work of our faculty, and a campus that will evolve while remaining true to its extraordinary heritage. Thank you for believing in Flagler College and investing in the promise of our students. Because of your partnership, Flagler is stronger, more vibrant, and better positioned than ever before. Sincerely,

John A. Delaney President, Flagler College

MESSAGE FROM THE CAMPAIGN STEERING COMMITTEE CHAIRS Mark and Alecia Bailey Frank and Christina Upchurch

John and Sonya Rood

Dear Flagler Forward Community, When Flagler Forward began, we knew we were embarking on something ambitious. We just didn’t know exactly where our determination might take us. Today, we can say with pride that it has elevated Flagler to astonishing new heights: onto a national stage, with a rapidly growing reputation and a pathbreaking vision for the future of liberal arts education. And what a journey this has been. We crossed the country, networked, reminisced, reconnected with old friends, made new ones, and told the Flagler story wherever we went. We shared why this College matters so much to us and invited others to become part of its future. But what made this campaign truly special were the people we met along the way, and the opportunity to get to know the Flagler community Brad '88 and Mandy Crupi Brown '88

in ways we never would have experienced otherwise. Today, more than anything, we are grateful. Together, this small but mighty community raised more than $85 million in private philanthropy for Flagler Forward—a historic achievement for the College and one of the largest campaigns in Northeast Florida. Every gift, conversation, introduction, and show of support carried us further than we ever imagined when we began. As a result, we are giving more students the opportunity to experience all that Flagler has to offer, strengthening the faculty and programs that shape that experience, and creating a campus that will continue to surprise and inspire the people at its heart: our students. Most of all, this campaign reminded us how much the Flagler community cares about paying forward what makes this College so special. So many of us know the lifelong friendships, mentorship, and sense of belonging that make a Flagler education unlike any other. We came together so that future generations can know that feeling, too, and carry their own Flagler bond with them long after they leave campus. So, on behalf of the Campaign Steering Committee, thank you. Thank you for showing up, for your generosity and enthusiasm, for sharing your memories and stories, and for being part of this extraordinary journey. It has been our great honor to lead it alongside you. Here’s to Flagler, and to the future we are building together. With gratitude, John and Sonya Rood | Brad '88 and Mandy Crupi Brown '88 | Mark and Alecia Bailey | Frank and Christina Upchurch The Flagler Forward Campaign Steering Committee Chairs

THE STATE OF FLORIDA

PRESERVING OUR LEGACY AND INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE The State of Florida made the largest public investments in Flagler College’s history, pledging $77.25 million in appropriations through the Flagler Forward campaign to advance three priorities: renew Ponce de Leon Hall, establish the Institute for Classical Education, and fund future renovations of Markland House.

PONCE RESTORATION The State of Florida, the Florida Legislature, and the Division of Historical Resources committed $70 million to restoring Ponce de Leon Hall, preserving the building that has defined Flagler College since its founding. In July 2022, a burst pipe in the East Wing and resulting flood became an unexpected catalyst for a comprehensive restoration, creating an opportunity to address critical infrastructure needs while safeguarding Ponce Hall’s extraordinary historic character. The State’s leadership reflects a shared responsibility to steward an irreplaceable piece of Florida’s heritage, carrying forward the Gilded Age vision and architectural distinction that shaped Ponce Hall while thoughtfully adapting it to serve the evolving needs of Flagler College.

◂ A full look at the Ponce restoration, and the generous donors who helped make it possible, is featured later in this report.

INSTITUTE for CLASSICAL EDUCATION The State of Florida’s $6.5 million investment established the Flagler College Institute for Classical Education, creating a statewide resource dedicated to strengthening civics education and supporting Florida’s growing network of classical schools. Rooted in Flagler’s liberal arts tradition, the Institute emphasizes the enduring study of history, literature, philosophy, rhetoric, and the great ideas that have shaped Western Civilization. It encourages students to think critically, communicate effectively, and engage thoughtfully as informed citizens. Today, the Institute serves as a hub for educator preparation, professional development, and K-12 collaboration. Through conferences, workshops, school partnerships, and leadership training, it equips hundreds of teachers and school leaders each year with the knowledge and resources to bring the principles of classical education into classrooms across Florida.

THE WILLIAM R. KENAN, JR. CHARITABLE TRUST

BUILDING WHAT COMES NEXT In 2022, the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust made the largest private gift in Flagler College’s history: a $12 million, 3:1 matching gift that spearheaded the campaign’s momentum and set a new standard for philanthropic support at the College.

A SHARED LEGACY OF OPPORTUNITY For more than four decades, the Kenan Charitable Trust has played a vital role in advancing Flagler College’s growth and academic success. The Trust’s 2022 gift leveraged an additional $36 million in support for financial aid, academic programs, technology, and campus enhancements, while matching funds inspired donors to establish new, endowed scholarships.

That commitment to Flagler is rooted in a relationship that stretches back generations. William R. Kenan, Jr., worked alongside his brother-in-law, Henry Flagler, helping develop Florida’s east coast through joint business ventures that shaped the region into the present. Today, the Trust’s partnership with Flagler honors that shared history, while advancing the innovation, opportunity, and academic excellence that signal the College’s future.

The Kenan Trust saw the potential in Professor Kip Taisey’s vision for a stronger music program at Flagler College. It's $100,000 gift in 2018 provided the start-up funding to launch Flagler’s Music Minor, which quickly became one of the College’s fastest-growing minors. In 2022, Trustee Tom Kenan deepened this investment by establishing the Thomas S. Kenan, III Professor of Piano, bringing pianist Keith Teepen, DMA, to Flagler. “The Tom Kenan Professorship played a crucial role in recruiting me to Flagler. It is the reason I am here,” Teepen said. When Teepen arrived, four students were enrolled in piano lessons and the Keyboard Lab did not yet exist. Today, his studio has grown to 15 students, with new acoustic pianos and hybrid keyboards providing expanded opportunities for students to develop their skills. Teepen has also brought high-caliber artists to campus for performances and masterclasses and established an annual faculty showcase. “Our students’ growth and development in musicianship and piano skills is a result of the generous help and support of Tom Kenan,” Teepen said. “We are continuing to move forward refining our music minor and building a ‡ music major.” Photo of Thomas S. FORWARD FOR OUR PEOPLE ›››

FORWARD for OUR STUDENTS Through the Flagler Forward campaign, 195 scholarships have been established, ensuring every generation of Flagler students has access to opportunity, support, and pathways to success.

Through endowed scholarships that provide lasting support and annual awards that help recipients year by year, donors are ensuring that economic hardship never stands between a student and the full promise of a Flagler education: a robust, well-rounded education that prepares students not only for successful careers, but for lives well lived. Beyond financial assistance, these scholarships create space for students to grow as scholars, leaders, and professionals. Their impact is visible across campus—in classrooms, research projects, internships, and student organizations—where recipients are shaping their own futures and elevating the Flagler community.

My mother wanted to study journalism, but only completed one semester before entering the workforce. Being able to pursue my degree for both of us means everything to me. I’m so grateful to the donors who invested in my future.” — Sarah E. Ellis ’26, Digital Media Production & Journalism and Public Relations

◂ Sarah E. Ellis ’26, born in Jacksonville, North Carolina, and raised by an immigrant mother, is a first-generation student whose path to a four-year degree began at a local Florida state college. Scholarship aid made college possible from the start and eventually enabled her transfer to Flagler, where she found a close-knit academic community and a program that matched her passion for journalism and public relations. “I’m the first person in my immediate family to go to a four-year college for any length of time,” she said. “Scholarships opened a door for me and my family that was previously shut.” At Flagler, Sarah has continued working multiple jobs while making the most of the opportunities around her, from covering athletics as a member of the media team to freelance photography and writing for The Gargoyle. Her work in the classroom has opened doors, too. Her research was accepted for presentation at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications Conference, where she was one of just two undergraduate students (both from Flagler) in an otherwise graduate-level setting. For Sarah, scholarship support is about far more than financial assistance. It gave her the confidence and security to dream bigger about a future she didn't know she could reach. “My scholarships have meant the world to me—they were entirely the reason I was able to go to college in the first place. They completely changed the trajectory of my life.”

“Receiving scholarship aid has inspired me to strive to become a better learner and teacher and dedicate my time to contributing to the world of mathematics. I am truly excited to use all the skills I have gained from my time at Flagler to continue my search for knowledge in graduate school.”

FORWARD for OUR FACULTY Through the Flagler Forward campaign, donors have established three new, endowed professorships to elevate academic excellence and drive thought leadership across Flager’s campus.

Behind every transformative educational experience is a faculty member who inspires curiosity, challenges assumptions, and encourages students to see the world in new ways. Endowed professorships are investments in these leading educators, enabling Flagler to attract and retain distinguished faculty whose influence extends far beyond the classroom. By investing in professorships, donors advance a vision of Flagler where exceptional teaching flourishes, groundbreaking ideas take root, and students learn from faculty whose work is shaping conversations on campus and in the world.

His current research explores the impact of artificial intelligence on teaching and learning, challenging faculty to rethink long-standing assumptions about the role of professors in the classroom. “Faculty have always aimed to help students think critically, and we continue to refine how best to cultivate that capacity across fields. What is clear, especially in the age of AI, is that we must model the habits we hope to cultivate: experimenting with emerging tools, acknowledging what we don't yet know, and adapting our practice

In July, White presented his research, “(Re) Building the Business School for the AI Economy,” at the Southern Business Deans Association Annual Workshop in Louisville. His work focused on how colleges can adapt to emerging technologies while improving student outcomes and equipping faculty to thrive in a changing educational landscape. “My endowed position has created a real sense of community among me and the other Freytag professors,” White said. “It has also kept me connected to the broader academic community and helped me participate in high-stakes conversations about the future of academia.”

Students are always changing, and faculty must continually adapt alongside them. I find that challenge invigorating, and my professorship is helping support new efforts to strengthen mentoring and pedagogical development across the School of Business.”

HONORING THE PAST, BUILDING THE FUTURE The renewal of Ponce Hall preserves one of Flagler College’s most iconic landmarks while creating an enhanced residential experience for future generations of students.

PONCE HALL Through the generosity of campaign donors and the partnership of dedicated public leaders, Flagler College completed a comprehensive renovation of the East and West Wings of Ponce Hall. The project represents a bold investment in the student experience, blending the timeless beauty of Ponce with thoughtfully renewed residence rooms, revitalized gathering spaces, and essential infrastructure. It also safeguarded the building’s priceless art, intricate craftsmanship, and 135-year-old architectural legacy—preserving one of Florida’s greatest historic treasures and an enduring piece of America’s cultural heritage. Now, Ponce Hall stands as a testament to Flagler College’s promise to preserve the heart of the Flagler experience. Within these walls, Saints continue to build their futures, connected across time by Henry Flagler’s legacy and by the shared bonds of those who have called Flagler home.

Living in Ponce was an immersive journey into the core of the Flagler experience. Before and after the renovation, it was the place where I could step away from academics and simply be grounded in curiosity. The history never leaves you, and the fun around the corner in and out of the classroom was always waiting. I couldn’t have been more impressed by the renovation, considering how protective I felt about the building’s historic character. It honored what made Ponce special while creating space for students like me to grow into more of their authentic selves.”

PROTECTING A LIVING LANDMARK With gratitude for Chairman Rood’s leadership in preserving Ponce Hall. Recognizing Ponce Hall as the “heart and soul” of Flagler College, Board of Trustees Chairman John Rood led the effort to secure a historic $70 million investment from the State of Florida to support its restoration. Working with the governor, senators, and the Florida legislature, Rood built the case for a state partnership to preserve an essential symbol of the College and larger St. Augustine community. His commitment was rooted in the belief that preserving the Ponce required more than restoring a landmark; it meant ensuring the building remained a vibrant, living part of the College experience. “Nobody could imagine Flagler surviving without its heart intact,” Rood said. “If we didn’t find a way to restore Ponce, we couldn’t continue to operate it; and a building that isn’t being inhabited and shared with the

community eventually risks being lost.” Rood’s advocacy also provided an opportunity to address critical infrastructure needs, uncover historic elements, and modernize student spaces while preserving Ponce’s character, ensuring the building can serve Flagler for another century. “In hindsight, it was fortunate that we were able to see what was behind the walls,” Rood said. “We could make sure we did what we needed to do to ensure the building will last another 100 years.” While Rood played a pivotal role in advancing the project, he credits the collective commitment of the Flagler community for making it possible. “Everybody on this Board does what they’ve got to do to make Flagler better,” he said. “We all do what we can to help the College.”

FORWARD FOR OUR PROGRAMS ›››

Flagler Forward gifts amplified the impact of programs that are reshaping the Flagler experience and strengthening the resources that make opportunity possible. A Flagler education reaches beyond the classroom through programs that spur imagination and open new possibilities for students to engage the world. With donor support, Flagler has redefined the student experience, strengthened the resources that fuel institutional resilience, and embraced new ways to bring learning to life, on campus and far beyond it.

LEARNING IN THE SPOTLIGHT 54 BELOW In 2025, Flagler College launched a partnership with 54 Below, New York City’s iconic venue and “Broadway’s Living Room,” to provide Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) and Musical Theatre students with an immersive introduction to the world of live entertainment. Made possible through the generosity of The Honorable John and Mrs. Sonya Rood, the program brings students to New York City to learn directly from active industry professionals. Through this experience, HTM students gain firsthand exposure to restaurant and show operations, while

Musical Theatre students perform Flagler’s annual Cabaret on 54 Below’s renowned stage. Each year, two HTM students are selected for an internship at the venue, connecting classroom learning to professional opportunity. For Rachel Castillo ’25, that opportunity became a defining part of her Flagler experience. Selected as a management intern at 54 Below, Rachel gained real-world experience in hospitality, entertainment, and dining. What began as an eightweek internship grew into a career opportunity, and Rachel now serves as Assistant Manager at the cabaret club.

Working at 54 Below has had a tremendous impact on both my professional and personal growth. The experience has allowed me to sharpen the skills I arrived with while developing entirely new ones that have helped shape me into a stronger and more confident industry professional.” — Rachel Castillo ’25 , Hospitality and Tourism Management, Assistant General Manager, 54 Below

FLAGSHIP

Flagler Sophomore High Impact Practice

EDUCATION WITHOUT BORDERS Flagler Forward donors turned FlagSHIP’s promise of experiential learning for every student into a reality, expanding scholarship support so more Saints can step beyond the classroom and into immersive learning experiences at home and abroad. Combining coursework with guided field research, service learning, and highimpact travel, Flagler’s signature program cultivates ethical citizenship while broadening perspective. Students emerge transformed—with the confidence, cultural awareness, and adaptability to leave their mark on an increasingly interconnected world. For Vittoria A. Merlino ’27, FlagSHIP opened a window into two distinct cultures and challenged her to see the world beyond herself. During her trip to Spain and Morocco, she studied cross-cultural communication, language, and environmental issues while gaining a deeper understanding of foreign traditions. Through conversations with locals and exposure to new communities, she discovered the importance of openness and empathy when engaging with people from different backgrounds. That opportunity for growth was made possible because of the financial support she received through the FlagSHIP Scholarship. The trip continues to influence her educational journey and future goals. “I am deeply grateful to the donors who made this possible,” she said. “It not only supported my studies, but also helped me see how global perspectives enrich academic and professional goals.”

I loved being in Europe for two weeks and learning all about Scottish culture and how it differs from America. My parents are barely getting me through college, so this scholarship made all the difference. My trip was one of the most impactful experiences of my life.” — Dominick A. DeLeo ’27, Finance and Accounting

My trip to Colombia completely changed my life. I broke out of a shell that I’ve been stuck in my whole life and for the first time I felt comfortable alone. My scholarship created an opportunity that I probably would have never experienced otherwise.” — Reid P. Ramos ’27, Accounting

Living and learning in two countries with distinct cultures helped me grow tremendously on a personal level. I became more adaptable, independent, and confident navigating new environments. I was only able to immerse myself in these cultural opportunities because of my scholarship. Because of this support, I was able to focus on building meaningful connections and truly embrace each experience without the added stress of financial strain.” — Vittoria A. Merlino ’27, Coastal Environmental Science

I grew up with a single mom and only dreamed of traveling abroad. This scholarship gave me the nearly impossible opportunity to travel outside the country for the first time and witness and learn about Korean culture, which I’ve only ever been able to see from a TV screen and through social media.” — Jalyssa T. Johnson ’27, Cinematic Arts

COUNTRIES VISITED

Seeing students who have never flown on a plane travel across the world and immerse themselves in another country is the greatest joy of my job. When a student is willing to push themselves beyond what they ever imagined, and I am there to witness it and partner with them in the process, there is nothing more rewarding.” — Jessica Howell,
