MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT Delaney

Dear graduates,

Each year I’ve served as President of Flagler College, I approach the monumental occasion of Commencement with immense pride and gratitude. Like many of you, my own path was shaped by the transformative power of education, and the people who made that journey meaningful.

As I stand before a class of graduates sitting shoulder to shoulder with their friends, teammates, and peers, I am reminded of the pivotal moments during my own college experience when friendships were forged in the most unexpected places. Those bonds, created over late-night study sessions, spirited debates, and shared laughter, became the bedrock of my life.

Together, step-by-step, you’ve completed a remarkable journey that will forever bind you to each other and to the enduring legacy of Flagler College. Consider what a wonderful privilege it is to take this final step by their side. Also, remember the committed mentorship of your professors who challenged, supported, and believed in you every step of the way.

Let the bonds of friendship and mentorship that you formed at Flagler remind you of the community you can always return to here in St. Augustine. Whether you seek guidance, networking opportunities, or simply a friendly face, know that Flagler remains your home.

Commencement is also a time to celebrate your individuality and the unique contributions each of you made to our vibrant community. Through this journey, you have persevered, adapted, and grown in ways that will shape your future endeavors.

As the generations of Saints before you have shown, your impact resonates far beyond your years on campus. I encourage you to look ahead to your future with excitement. Whether you are beginning a career, continuing your education, or exploring new paths, carry forward the spirit of innovation, integrity, and connection that defines Flagler College.

A COASTAL COLLEGE STEEPED IN HISTORY.

Flagler College is an independent, non-sectarian institution of higher education offering four-year programs leading to the undergraduate degree. Flagler was originally established as a women’s college in 1968 before becoming a coeducational institution in 1971, and graduating its first class in the spring of 1972.

While the College was founded in 1968, the seeds of its existence were sown in the nineteenth century. Its heritage is closely linked to the history of Florida through the life of Henry Morrison Flagler, oil magnate, railroad pioneer, and land developer. Mr. Flagler co-founded the Standard Oil Company with John D. Rockefeller, and initiated Florida’s giant tourism industry through his railroad and chain of luxury hotels. He is regarded as the single most pivotal figure in Florida’s post-industrial development, and his record of philanthropy remains unmatched in the state’s history.

The famous Hotel Ponce de Leon, built by Mr. Flagler in 1888, was one of the grandest resort hotels of its day. Now the centerpiece of the Flagler College campus, Ponce de Leon Hall stands as a National Historic Landmark of American architecture. The legacy of Henry M. Flagler is bestowed on the College through the lasting beauty of this building which has stood the test of time.

Florida State Senator, District 7

Senator Tom Leek was first elected to the Florida Senate in 2024, having served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2016-2024. Senate District 7 is comprised of Flagler, Putnam, St. Johns and parts of Volusia Counties.

Tom was approached about running for legislative office in 2016, and after consultation with his wife, Michelle, and daughters, Alex and Sarah, the family decided this would be an opportunity to serve their home community with the passion for service that had driven their lives to that point. Believing that life must be lived with purpose, he won his election and quickly became known as a new conservative member to watch.

Tom has the distinction of having served as a committee chairman or on the leadership team of each Speaker in the Florida House during his tenure. Today, in the Florida Senate, he serves as Chair of the Senate Commerce and Tourism

Committee, and is a member of the Appropriations Committee on Transportation, Tourism, and Economic Development, Community Affairs Committee, Fiscal Policy Committee, Health Policy Committee, Judiciary Committee, and others.

Tom’s accomplishments in the Florida House include landmark legislation in establishing Florida as the most law enforcementfriendly state in the union by strengthening their ability to recruit, retain and reward our police officers. And as a trusted member of leadership, he has worked on many of the conservative advances of the past few years in school choice, economic development and important social issues that strengthen the family.

His background running a business, arguing in court, and his many civic leadership positions translated well to the legislative process, as he led the passage of the first significant tort reform legislation in nearly twenty years.

A Daytona Beach Seabreeze High School graduate, Tom earned his BA from the University of Central Florida and his JD from Stetson University and is Chief Legal Officer and EVP of Foundation Risk Partners, Inc., a top national middle market insurance brokerage. He resides in Ormond Beach with his wife Michelle. They are the parents of two daughters.

CHLOEE JAYDE BRILL

Chloee Jayde Brill, a native of Nashville, Tennessee, graduates from Flagler College with a degree in Theatre Arts and a minor in Music. Her time at Flagler has been deeply shaped by her passion for the arts, where she has grown both as a performer and as an individual. Through her experiences on stage and in the classroom, Chloee has developed meaningful connections and discovered a strong sense of purpose.

A dedicated and engaged member of the campus community, Chloee served for two years on the board of Alpha Psi Omega, the national theatre honor society, including in the role of Marketing and Community Outreach Chair. She has been actively involved in multiple theatre productions throughout her time at Flagler and contributed to campus life through three work-study positions, including serving as a Music Ambassador.

Chloee is grateful for the unwavering support of her family, friends, and mentors, whose encouragement has guided her throughout her college journey.

Academic Traditions

ACADEMIC HONORS

Students at Flagler College may graduate with honors by virtue of earning exceptionally high grades. There are three designatio for honors: Summa Cum Laude (with the highest praise), which requires an overall grade point average of 3.90-4.00; Magna Cum Laude (with great praise), which requires an overall average of 3.70-3.89; and Cum Laude (with praise), which requires an avera of 3.50-3.69.

Honors distinctions are determined by students’ cumulative grade point averages at the end of their senior year.

To be eligible for honors, a student must complete at least 56 semester hours of graded academic work at Flagler College. Honors designations listed in this program are based on GPA calculations through the fall semester and are subject to change upon final review.

ACADEMIC CEREMONIES

The commencement ceremony is the tradition by which an academic institution publicly acknowledges and honors the accomplishments of students who have satisfied the requirements for their chosen degrees. Many factors, like the nature of the institution, the size of the graduating class, the weather, and the place of ceremony, affect the details of commencement ceremony. In accommodating these varying factors, each academic institution creates traditions and practices unique to their ceremony. At Flagler College, the commencement procession includes full-time faculty and members of the Board of Trustees. Those on stage, presiding over the ceremony, include administrative officials, a representative for the faculty senate, the commencement speaker.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

Academic attire originated in 12th-century Western European universities, where gowns and hoods provided warmth in unheated halls and came to signify academic rank. The three degrees—bachelor, master, and doctor—reflect levels of scholarly achievement, with masters and doctors historically qualified to teach.

In the United States, academic regalia was revived in the 19th century to formalize collegiate ceremonies. The Academic Costume Code of 1885 established standard guidelines, later refined by the American Council on Education in 1960.

Academic dress consists of three elements: the cap, gown, and hood. The traditional mortarboard cap is worn with a tassel, while gown styles and sleeve shapes indicate degree level. Black is the standard gown color, though some institutions incorporate their own colors.

The hood carries the most symbolism. Its shape and length denote the degree earned, while its colors represent both the wearer’s field of study and the institution granting the degree.

THE COLLEGE MACE

The mace represents the power, strength, and stability of Flagler College and is carried by the elected Chair of the Faculty Senate during academic ceremonies. Constructed in 1992 for the College’s 25th anniversary, the mace incorporates materials from Ponce Hall and was designed by Associate Professor Emeritus Thomas Rahner. The lion, cast in bronze by Professor Emeritus Enzo Torcoletti, stands as a symbol of courage and pride. The imagery throughout the mace reflects the tree of knowledge, the College’s academic disciplines, and the heritage of St. Augustine.

CHAIN OF OFFICE

The Flagler College Chain of Office is bestowed upon the President at an official inauguration ceremony and is worn by them during all official occasions requiring academic regalia. It is a permanent insignia of office and passed down to each succeeding president of Flagler College. The chain consists of medallions from the Flagler College seal, as well as the names of the past presidents of Flagler, including their years of service.
