Dear graduates, faculty, and distinguished guests,

Each year I’ve served as President of Flagler College, I approach the monumental occasion of Commencement with immense pride and gratitude. Like many of you, my own path was shaped by the transformative power of education.

As I stand before a class of graduates sitting shoulder to shoulder with their friends, teammates, and peers, I am reminded of the pivotal moments during my own college experience when friendships were forged in the most unexpected places. Those bonds, created over late-night study sessions, spirited debates, and shared laughter, became the bedrock of my life.

Together, step-by-step, you’ve completed a unique journey that will forever bind you to each other and to the legacy of Flagler College. Consider what a wonderful privilege it is to take this final step by their side. Also, remember the committed mentorship of your professors who were guides and champions of your potential.

Let the bonds of friendship and mentorship that you formed at Flagler remind you of the community you can always return to here in St. Augustine. Whether you seek guidance, networking opportunities, or simply a friendly face, know that Flagler remains your home.

Commencement is also a time to celebrate your individuality and the unique contributions each of you made to our vibrant community. Through this journey, you have persevered, adapted, and grown in ways that will shape your future endeavors.

PRESIDENT

A COASTAL COLLEGE STEEPED IN HISTORY.

Flagler College is an independent, non-sectarian institution of higher education offering four-year programs leading to the undergraduate degree. Flagler was originally established as a women’s college in 1968 before becoming a coeducational institution in 1971, and graduating its first class in the spring of 1972.

While the College was founded in 1968, the seeds of its existence were sown in the nineteenth century. Its heritage is closely linked to the history of Florida through the life of Henry Morrison Flagler, oil magnate, railroad pioneer, and land developer. Mr. Flagler co-founded the Standard Oil Company with John D. Rockefeller, and initiated Florida’s giant tourism industry through his railroad and chain of luxury hotels. He is regarded as the single most pivotal figure in Florida’s post-industrial development, and his record of philanthropy remains unmatched in the state’s history.

The famous Hotel Ponce de Leon, built by Mr. Flagler in 1888, was one of the grandest resort hotels of its day. Now the centerpiece of the Flagler College campus, Ponce de Leon Hall stands as a National Historic Landmark of American architecture. The legacy of Henry M. Flagler is bestowed on the College through the lasting beauty of this building which has stood the test of time.

ACADEMIC HONORS

Students at Flagler College may graduate with honors by virtue of earning exceptionally high grades. There are three designations for honors: Summa Cum Laude (with the highest praise), which requires an overall grade point average of 3.90-4.00; Magna Cum Laude (with great praise), which requires an overall average of 3.70-3.89; and Cum Laude (with praise), which requires an average of 3.50-3.69.

Honors distinctions are determined by the students' cumulative grade point average at the end of their senior year. To be eligible for honors, a student must complete at least 56 semester hours of graded academic work at Flagler College.

ACADEMIC CEREMONIES

The commencement ceremony is the tradition by which an academic institution publicly acknowledges and honors the accomplishments of students who have satisfied the requirements for their chosen degrees. Many factors, like the nature of the institution, the size of the graduating class, the weather, and the place of ceremony, affect the details of commencement ceremony. In accommodating these varying factors, each academic institution creates traditions and practices unique to their ceremony. At Flagler College, the commencement procession includes full-time faculty and members of the Board of Trustees. Those on stage, presiding over the ceremony, include administrative officials, a representative for the faculty senate, the commencement speaker, as well as the invocation and benediction speakers.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

Academic attire originated in 12th-century Western European universities, and was initially designed for warmth in unheated halls. Gowns, adapted from priestly togas, were fur-lined, and hoods protected shaved heads. Medieval universities emphasized rank, using robes to distinguish scholars, much like the military’s hierarchy. The three academic ranks— bachelor, master, and doctor—reflect levels of achievement, with masters and doctors both historically qualified to teach.

Revived in the 19th-century by American universities to enhance academic ceremonies, regalia has evolved as institutions grew. In 1885, the Academic Costume Code standardized attire, remaining largely unchanged until the American Council on Education issued revised guidelines in 1960.

Academic attire consists of three main components: cap, gown, and hood. The traditional headpiece is the mortarboard, a square cap that matches the gown in color and material, with a tassel worn on the left. Doctoral graduates wear gold tassels, while some institutions have adopted the velvet beret, inspired by Cambridge University.

Black is the standard gown color, though some universities use institutional colors. Master’s gowns have pointed sleeves with slits at the elbows, while doctoral gowns feature wide velvet lapels and full, bell-shaped sleeves with three velvet chevrons. Bachelor’s and master’s gowns are untrimmed, but doctoral gowns may be black or the scholar’s field color. Some universities have recently introduced more colorful regalia for their doctoral graduates.

The hood, draped over the back of the gown, carries significant academic symbolism. Its shape and length denote the degree level: pointed for master’s and bell-shaped for doctoral degrees. The hood’s border color represents the scholar’s field of study, while its lining reflects the degree-granting institution. SYMBOLS OF OFFICE

THE COLLEGE MACE

The mace represents the power, strength, and stability of Flagler College. It is carried by the elected Chair of the Faculty Senate. The mace was constructed in 1992 out of materials from Ponce Hall for the 25th anniversary of the College by Associate Professor Emeritus Thomas Rahner. The lion is cast in bronze by Professor Emeritus Enzo Torcoletti. The imagery on the mace symbolizes the tree of knowledge, Flagler’s academic departments, and St. Augustine.

CHAIN OF OFFICE

The Flagler College Chain of Office is bestowed upon the President at an official inauguration ceremony and is worn by them during all official occasions requiring academic regalia. It is a permanent insignia of office and passed down to each succeeding president of Flagler College. The chain consists of medallions from the Flagler College seal, as well as the names of the past presidents of Flagler, including their years of service.
