Den hemmelege øya i vest. Ei eventyr-verd. Ei perla i vest, gjev me deg ein smak av når du er vår gjest. Unike opplevingar, smakfull kultur. Her finn du det meste i storslått natur.
Frå vikingetid - ho like støtt står.
Me gjev deg ei oppleving for gane og sjel.
Ein halvtime frå Bergen, unna bylarm og støy, finn du denne skattekista, på vår hemmelege øy.

Nature experiences on Osterøy –the green island!
Here you can experience the great and exciting diversity of Osterøy's nature: the sea and the fjord landscape, large and small lakes, rushing rivers and streams, forested valleys and high mountains.
Whether you want to go to the top and enjoy the view, stroll along the marked paths, take a boat trip on the fjord or paddle on exciting water, you have plenty to choose from. Discover the charming local environment and villages, historical gems and the development from old crafts to modern industry!
Enjoy the adventure, with or without a guide!
Mountain tours:
remembered for a long time. You move quietly forward, discover nature and silence in a way that gives you peace in mind. In Storavatnet you can get far away from everyday life and enjoy nature. You can take a shorter trip on Herlandsvatnet near Fjordslottet.
Setertur:
Mountain-summer dairy farming was common on Osterøy until the 1950s. A visit to a mountain hut – «støl/seter» - will give you good insight in how life was and how the cultural landscape has changed up till today. Life on the farm was hard, and it was usually the young girls on the farm who were sent to «stølen». Now most of the mountain huts are used as holiday cottages.
Activity – Team relationshipbuilding/cooperation/ built in nature
Activities that strengthen relationships and cooperation. Can take place inside Fjordslottet, right outside the hotel or in nature, also in connection with other activities.
Osterøy has many exciting mountains. With several access paths, you can choose whether you want to go steeply or with a gentler ascent. In the mountains you get a unique view of the Osterfjorden, Nordhordland and the islands outside Bergen.
Yes, all the way to Hardangerjøkulen there is a view from one of the highest mountains.
Hiking tours:
If you want a calmer trip on a path or road, we would especially recommend Kossdalen with its history and mystery. See own product sheet.
Thematic tours:
Special themed programs with walking in nature: Hydropower history, church history on Osterøy, Ole Bull history, the history of the salmon filets in Osterfjorden.

Kossdalen
– mysterious, magical and beautiful
What is it that glistens in Kossdalsvatnet when the sun or moon shines? And why is it important to lift a stone up the warp as you pass one of the 17 bends through Kossdalskaret?
There is an aura of mystery over the restored road section between Svenheim and Hosanger. The road, which was completed in 1893 and has an ascent of 27%, stands out today as a work of art in engineering, all built by manual labor.
The road up through Kossdalskaret itself is 360 meters long and rises from 75 to 175 m.a.s.l., and in addition supply roads come from both sides in magical surroundings.
The trip offers rare nature experiences. Along the way, you will get a glimpse into the mystery and facts connected to this unique stretch of road, which lies in an area that the municipality has designated as a cultural conservation area. And if you're lucky, you might encounter surprises along the way....?

Goat and sheep farm at the Bernes/Osterøy cheese farm
I found, I found, said Askeladden - and on this farm he had felt like coming home.
You will feel at home with Berit and Lars, who welcome you with a warm and inclusive look.
This is an exciting, traditional, western country farm with goats and cheese production, and Old Norse sheep for wool and meat production. You can join the cheese factory, you can join the barn, the drying shed, and you can taste freshly made goat's cheese, flat bread and our own meat products from the farm. It's as if you can feel yourself as part of Asbjørnsen and Moe's fairytales from the 1850 `s.
On the farm you will meet more than a hundred Norwegian dairy goats and of course the «Stone Age sheep», Old Norwegian spaelsau. The animals welcome friendly patting if you want to cuddle with them. On the farm they want to have a good ecology and they try as far as possible to have a subsistence agriculture, so the animals are allowed to graze in the open air most of the year.
In the farm shop you can buy real goat's cheese, cured meats produced according to more than 100-year-old recipes. You may buy yarn and leather from our own animals and seasonal products from our own garden or nature.

Hole goat farm
a real experience for young and elderly
As in the fairytale «The three Billy Goats Gruff» you are going to meet Bruse the Goat and his «fellow» - goats. The goat farmer Øystein will be giving you a lively, educational and real experience of life together with the goats on the farm and in the stable in summer.
You can take part in goat milking, and you can also make your own goat cheese to bring home - if the cheese is made on that particular day.
The garden is located in the village of Hosanger on the road towards Kossdalen and Kossdalsvingane, and has milk production with around 70 dairy goats. The goats are milked morning and evening.
There is a cheese factory on the farm, where traditional brown goat cheese is made. Osterøy has long traditions when it comes to goat herding and making brown goat cheese.
«Brunost» from Osterøy has had a quality stamp for a long time.
The garden visit can be combined with a trip to Kossdalen, and Øystein can be a guide if that suits.

The magical wool adventure starts with the sheep as the producer of this unique raw material. We can now offer a unique experience concept where you gain insight and understanding about this exciting process through visits to Sauegard, Osterøy Museum/textiles and the knitting factory Norlender Knitwear.
The sheep farm at Bernes/Osterøy:
On the family farm with Berit and Lars, they raise sheep and goats. The sheep breed is a colourful Old Norwegian sheep -spaelsau - a wonderful and hardy sheep breed that was saved from extinction. The wool from this sheep has glossy cover hairs and soft underwool.
Osterøy Museum:
- Lecture and textile tour. Use of wool.
- Practical demonstration/workshop.
Wool from the Norwegian game sheep is one of the most important factors for our ancestors developing viable societies in our parts of the country. Over several thousand years, people have built up knowledge about how they best can use wool for protection, warmth or for large sails on ocean-going ships. At the museum you will be told and gain knowledge about some of the stories about the magical wool and the living cultural heritage we manage.

The wool adventure – "the magical wool" - from the sheep to finished fashion garment.
Kleiveland Gard
– the treasure at the end of the road
Imagine how Askeladden jumped up and clicked his heels together, in pure joy over the festive rooms and tempting tables!
At the attractive Kleiveland Gard at the end of the road, it is magically good to be.
In the restored and intimate barn, the hosts invite you to a guest stall, feast and storytelling with good home cooking and locally produced food. Here you can curl up in front of the fireplace or act like Cinderella and let loose in a lively barn dance.
It is easy to imagine that the king's longships - in historical times - have glided slowly along mighty mountains and sparkling waterfalls in the magical Westland fjord.
For centuries sea and land have offered fertile treasures for the people along the lee. How one catches sprightly salmon using the inventive salmon trap and «sitjenot», is an adventure in our history. At Kleiveland the host will tell you about the salmon adventure and village history and take you for a boat trip to one of these salmon traps, if you wish.
At Kleiveland Gard you can find peace and tranquility and feel the intense joy of good company.

Norlender
– over 90 years of textile production
From yarn to finished, stylish wool products. "The wool adventure" started with an Askeladd who had dreams of a mountain farm on Osterøy. A knitting machine was purchased and placed in the basement of the home garden. Then he and his family learned the art of producing underwear, first for women, then for children and men.
This went well and a separate "factory room" was built on the farm. When this became too small, production was moved from the mountain farm to modern factory premises idyllically located by the fjord in Hosanger. Today the company produces fine knitted garments for young and old.
A guided visit to this company provides an understanding of how a knitted garment is made, from yarn to finished garment, and you will hear the history and humorous anecdotes. At the factory outlet at Norlenderloftet, you can renew your wardrobe with stylish woolen products.

Spectacular vintage car tour
You think you are on your way to the blue mountain. Then a spectacular landscape opens up. Can you hear the wood nymph «huldra» - whisper in your ear "Come join me…..?"
Huldra, as in the folktale, lures people away and you never see them again. But Osterøy-huldra only wants to show you natural gems from fjord to mountain to fjord through a changing landscape.
By car/vintage car or minibus, the trip goes up Herlandsvingane, you pass Herlandsfossen power plant, Herlandsnesjane nature reserve, Storavatnet (power reservoir), down Fossdalsvingane, before you climb the mountain again to Njåstad and get a great view of Osterøyfjella in the north.
Through the beautiful Bruvikdalen that lies in front of you, you have access to various mountain hikes, where the view from the peaks reaches far beyond Osterøy's borders.
The road down the mountainside to the beautiful village of Bruvik by the Sørfjorden is spectacular - and is the Trollstigen in a slightly smaller size, but with a very beautiful fjord view that you only find a few places in Western Norway.
It is especially beautiful when the snow still lies on the mountain peaks that are reflected in the shiny fjord.
The tour can be continued to the Ole Bull house, Hamre church and on to Osterøy Museum.
We can promise you an adventurous experience you won't soon forget

The Queen on the Osterfjord –
DS "Oster"
"Gamle Dampen" gives you a special and unique historical experience and is today "a living legend".
DS "Oster" is a steam-powered fjord boat that ran between Bergen and the Osterfjorden as a combined passenger and cargo boat.
The boat was built in 1908 and the hull was supposed to withstand icebreaking in the inner Osterfjorden. The boat has a long and exciting history, and was under both Norwegian and German command during the war. In 1965, it was converted to a diesel-powered freighter, but in 1996 it was bought by Nordhordland Veteran Boat Association and renamed "Oster" - a ship worth preserving.
The boat was restored and returned to its pre-1964 appearance and went from freighter to veteran ship.

The salmon traps in Osterfjorden – a unique nature and cultural experience
Salmon fishing with trap and seine was an important industry on the farms in Indre Osterfjorden until 1993. Today this fishery is protected. The two salmon traps on Askildneset have newly been restored with, among other things, support from the Cultural Heritage Fund. Today, the traps and accommodation cabins stand out as important cultural relics of the time when a lot of wild salmon was fished in the fjords around Osterøy. This fishing method was unique throughout the world. The Osterfjord is today referred to as the salmon fjord and is particularly noted as an important part of the Nordhordland UNESCO biosphere reserve.
Fjordslottet Hotel offers an experience trip to the salmon factory.
From Kleiveland quay you are transported with the shuttle boat "Ospenes" on the beautiful Osterfjord to the salmon traps on Askildneset where there is a new disembarkation quay. Here it is a short trip up to the trap where you can sit and wonder if you can spot salmon while an experienced salmon fisherman is telling and showing. Then return with "Ospenes" back to Kleiveland quay.

Hamre church
The church that stands at Hamre today is a ramshackle timber building from around 1600. But the church tower dates back to the early Middle Ages. In 1024 it was decided at the Mostratinget that Hamre should be the main church for Nordhordland.
So there have been two stave churches before the one we have today. The first stood from the early 1000s until about 1160, and the second until after the Reformation. The altar has been the same in all the churches, and we can see the old stone altar through a glass plate that has been installed. The church is rich in inventory both from Catholic times and later.
We can mention the baptismal font in soapstone from around 1250, an altar cabinet made in Lubeck around 1490, an altarpiece from 1622, a pulpit dated 1640. In the middle of the 17th century, the church was decorated inside on the walls and ceiling, and a part of the decor is still there. In the armory hangs a stave church plank with a runic inscription.

Herlandsfossen power plant – pioneering project and adventurous hydropower history
An impressive building in stone. Glowing in the landscape like Soria Moria castle in the dark of night, and grey and beautiful during the day. Herlandsfossen power station offers an adventurous history of power more than 100 years old.
In the past the power stations had pipe lines outside the mountainsides. As the first power station in the country the water was led to the turbines through pressure shafts and over a two kilometer long pressure tunnel.
The work was done by hand - an incredibly tiring and dangerous job - and at most more than 400 men/rollers were at work. Many came from Sweden. While the guide serves up the facts, try to visualize the work that these people did inside the mountain. Perhaps in your inner ear you can pick up the sound of rhythmic hammer blows on the drill?
The power station, which was completed in 1919, was designed by Arent Greve based on the model of the Rosenkrantztårnet in Bergen. An architectural masterpiece, which in the cultural preservation year 1992 was singled out as the municipality's cultural heritage contribution.
Thanks to the far-sighted and daring men who realized the plans for the Herlandsfossen power plant, the people on Osterøy got to experience the power adventure early.
Next to it the more modern and contemporary station lies - also built in local grey stone. It was completed in 1995, the same year as the old station gained its museum status.

The museum shows the way of life, living craft traditions and local building customs on Osterøy and in Nordhordland - called «strilelandet.»
A modern museum building contains collections and exhibitions and is used for lectures and concerts. The museum provides an introduction and knowledge in understanding the development from earlier times to the present day in our region north of Bergen.
The museum's rich collections are the basis for collaboration with researchers, artists and designers.

Visit Osterøy museum for "Nonsmat" - an authentic encounter with local food traditions.
The long table is covered:
We taste our way through several hundred years and a "nonsmat" around the long table. Fresh home-made wholemeal bread with plum jam, stomp cake with syrup, or goat's cheese make this a good meal in unique surroundings.
We sit closely around the long table and share the meal as people have done for hundreds of years. The host guides us through the food and the different tastes. Maybe we share our own stories and experiences and make some memorable moments!
The meal is a historical walk through meal and food traditions from «Strilelandet.» We get to taste porridge and bread as it might have been served for the "nonsmat" meal in earlier times and longbread with syrup, which was common in the 20th century.
Freshly fried wholemeal bread and »stompekaker», with good home-made toppings, make this a complete meal. Practical information: It is warm in the living room. On cold days, we light the fire.
The bread food will contain gluten.
The meal experience is easy to combine with a visit to the museum's exhibitions, a guided tour of the museum garden (ticket comes in addition) or a walk on the Kulturstien in Gjerstad (free access).
Price NOK 450.-

HISTORICAL CULTURAL HIKING IN EVENING AND NIGHT DARKNESS WITH - OR WITHOUT MOONLIGHT
In the cultural landscape at Gjerstad we can walk through several thousand years with traces of lived life. Burial mounds and burial fields from prehistoric times have been laid along the old roads. Near the church there are grave memorials from today and in the museum grounds we find traces that tell ideas about life and death, and traditions that were part of daily life in the past times.
We will experience the magical atmosphere in the dark along the cultural trail and in the museum garden, preferably by moonlight.
We can serve hot drinks and «stompekake» by the bonfire outside along the path or in the museum garden after the walk.
