UPCOMING MEMBER VOTING PROCESS

On April 21st, 2021, members of The National Golf Club of Kansas City (The National) were notified that the owners of The National intend to offer for sale The National and The National II (aka The Deuce). Members have 30 days to indicate an interest in collectively pursuing discussions to purchase the Clubs. A certified voting proctor has been retained to manage the voting process for this upcoming vote by The National Golf Club of Kansas City members. On or around May 7th, members will receive an official ballot from the certified voting proctor. The ballots will be sent by email and by US Mail to each member eligible to vote. Emailed ballots need to be printed and completed. Members should vote by indicating their selection on the ballot; the ballot must include the following:

 Primary member printed name  Primary member signature  Member number  Date  Member vote

Completed ballots may be returned to the voting proctor in one of two ways:

 Scan or legibly photograph the completed ballot and email it to the email address on the ballot or  Send by US Mail or other service to the mailing address on the ballot.

Mailed and emailed completed ballots must be received by the voting proctor by 11:59pm on May 17th, 2021 to be counted in the tally. Ballots received after this time will not be counted.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

1. Only one vote per membership will be counted. 2. The members that may participate in the vote are National Full Golf, DeuceStar, FiveStar,

Sport and Social (Purple Rose). 3. Only the primary member on each membership will receive a ballot. 4. Every ballot not returned or unfulfilled will count as a “NO” vote.

Dear Member,

They say April showers bring May flowers so I’m expecting our flowers to do extremely well since April was a very wet month. It was also very cool, so some warm weather would be nice to help things grow. We accomplished several things in April that will be noticeable in the month of May and going forward. Here are a few:

STEP CUT AROUND THE GREENS

We have established a new step cut around our greens. This cut of turf is 1-1/4" tall and 22" wide. As we mow this area more frequently, you should notice the density of turf increase and become more defined. I believe this will solve our issue of not having a transition cut of turf to our rough height around the greens. Our longterm goal is for this cut of grass to be Zoysia, but we will give this option a try and evaluate as the season goes along.

DRAINAGE POA CURE

New drainage has been installed on #14 tee box, on #17 approach and on #18 fairway. This will help solve some chronic issues with soft ground conditions in these areas which compromised good turf quality.

#18 FAIRWAY

We made two of our three spring applications of PoaCure on April 12th and April 26th. The third and final application for the spring will be on May 10th. You will notice the poa on the greens starting to turn yellow and eventually die off this month. We have already started our program for stimulating the Bentgrass in and around these areas to spread and eventually fill in these voids left by the poa. Your patience is appreciated as this will be a three-year process. Certain strains of poa will need to be sprayed as many as three times before they eventually die off. These are perennial bio-types that have evolved over time. That’s the reason for the lengthy process. The final goal for this process is to be 95% poa free.

#17 APPROACH

STEP CUT

I look forward to the beautiful weather we usually have in May as well as seeing you on the course or around the Club. Your Golf Course Maintenance staff is working hard to provide you the best conditions possible each and every day. Have a great month!

Regards, Gary Sailer, CGCS Director of Golf Course Maintenance

Dear Member, With warmer weather finally here to stay (with the exception of our crazy snow day on April 20th!), I hope all of you have been able to take advantage and play golf. Match Play started at the end of April and May brings us multiple events, detailed on the following pages, to include the Hangover and our first Couples Golf of the season. As we approach the active golfing season and tee time demands increase, please be mindful and respectful of other members when booking your tee times. You can help by filling out your tee time reservation to the best of your ability, adding your guest name(s) into spaces (when applicable) and avoiding blocking the tee time with “x’s” if you’re a single or double and don’t mind playing with other players. We’re also asking members to pair up on golf carts again (for both Club and personal carts). With your assistance, 2021 will be a successful and fun-filled season for everyone! As a reminder, if you would like to join our Member Rewards, please do so before our deadline of May 31st. Complete details for the program may be found below. Hope to see you at the Club soon. It is with great pride that The National Golf Club of Kansas City announces its selection by Central Links Golf to host The Watson Challenge in 2021. The Watson Challenge is an annual tournament featuring 48 area golfers ... the 24 best golf professionals and the 24 best amateurs in a three-day event to identify the “best golfer in Kansas City.” The National hosted the event in 2013 and is fortunate to host this year’s event. In addition to showcasing our great golf course, we consider it a tremendous honor to host one of the greatest golfers of all time, Tom Watson. We are confident that our Club, world-class facilities and member hospitality will shine during this event. The schedule for The Watson Challenge is as follows: June 2nd.....Player and Carnoustie Sponsor Cocktail Party June 3rd......Round 1 June 4th......Round 2 and VIP Reception hosted by all sponsors levels to include Tom Watson June 5th......Round 3 and Awards Ceremony *Tee times will be available to the membership starting at 12:30 PM June 3rd-5th* The Club has selected longtime members Rick Austin and Luke Austin to be tournament chairs for this event. Their focus will be driving sponsorship activity but they will also oversee all aspects of the event. If you are interested in sponsoring The Watson Challenge, please contact either Rick or Luke; their contact information may be found below. The event proceeds benefit The First Tee of Greater Kansas City, an organization near and dear to Mr. Watson’s heart. With the generous support of our members, we are extremely optimistic that this year's Watson Challenge will be a success. As you can imagine, an event of this magnitude takes the support of our residents, community and Club membership. We’ll need between 30-40 volunteers to facilitate all of the operations which is why Mike and Debbie Sobba have once again stepped up to co-chair the volunteer committee. As members since the Club opened in July 2000, Mike and Debbie have great relationships with our members and we have no doubt that they will succeed in gathering a passionate group of volunteers to showcase the Club. If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Mike (msobba@strunklp.com; 816.225.8793) or Debbie (Debbie@sobba.com; 816.853.7714).

Hello ladies! The Ladies’ Golf Association opened their season with THREE INCHES of snow covering the golf course! The group met for our annual meeting and breakfast but, due to the snow, had to postpone our golf outing. We braved the weather for the group photo above, with Golf Professional Andy Rumbaugh who assists with the LGA. A little inclement weather doesn’t get us down though as we’re looking forward to another fun-filled year of golf and socializing. There is still time for you to join in the fun! If you are interested in joining the LGA, please stop by the Golf Shop or email me at kickn.hass@gmail.com. Happy golfing, Karen Hass
