LOCH LLOYD MAHJONG LEAGUE PLAY GUIDELINES: FALL LEAGUE 2026 Any questions or differences of opinion about these guidelines should be directed to a League Representative (email, phone, or in person) Fall League Representatives: Michelle Illig, Annette Cundith, Christy Poe
THE BASICS The Loch Lloyd Mahjong League will consist of multiple seasons, each season lasting approximately 2-3 months (January-March, April-June, July-September, and October-December). Each season will have a Grand Championship Tournament. The Loch Lloyd Mahjong League will consist of Team Play and Individual Play. Loch Lloyd Mahjong League members must be an active member of Loch Lloyd Country Club to participate in the League. Each team will have a roster with a minimum of 2 players and a maximum of 4 players (more players per team allows more schedule flexibility for matches). Each team will create a team name (get creative). Each team will designate a Team Captain to ensure weekly games are fulfilled and accurate scores are reported. Each player on each team must participate in at least two matches in the duration of the season. League Play will be during specific days, times, and location each week, to be announced before quarterly registration opens. Any League Play matches that cannot be played during the specific days, times, and location can be made up at an alternative time after approval by the League Representative and must be proctored by a Loch Lloyd Country Club Representative or the League Representative. All League Members are invited weekly for open play during Match Play, regardless if they are competing in the match ups or not (individual scores add up towards an individual season winner — more proctored games means more points!) No team? No problem! Register individually and the Loch Lloyd Mahjong League will thoughtfully place you on a team prior to the start of league play. Instant new friends!
THE RANKINGS At the beginning of each season, please register and self-rank your level of play. Beginner: Learning to love Mahjong General understanding of the game and rules Limited game experience Slower pace of play Intermediate: Skills and confidence are still developing Full understanding of rules, gameplay, and etiquette Plays regularly with others Moderate pace of play Understanding and learning how to “pivot” card sections and lines Advanced: Competitive, experienced player Plays routinely Knows rules well and has the ability to teach others accurately Quick pace of play
THE MATCH UPS The Loch Lloyd Mahjong League will determine the matches at random and will send out the match schedule before the season starts. Team Captains will be responsible for determining which player will compete each week. Players must be registered on the Team Roster, no substitutions allowed! If a team does not have a player available for the match day, Team Captains can agree to reschedule at a time that must be approved and proctored by the League Representative or the Loch Lloyd Country Club Representative. Rematches must be played before the next scheduled match. The opponent has the option to not reschedule if an alternate time does not fit their schedule. If
the match is forfeited, the team with the original conflict will receive 0 points and the opposing team will receive 50 points. Please be on time. A team will also forfeit if their player is not present within 15 minutes from the time the match starts. The team that arrives late will take a 20 point penalty to begin the match. Individual players will also not be able to play for individual points if they are not present at the time the match round begins. The player with the highest score will win the match. All team members are welcome to Open Play on match day. Scores for individuals at open League Play will also be recorded and will count towards the season winner. More games = better chance of winning!
THE RULES The Loch Lloyd Mahjong League will follow the rules printed on the National Mahjongg League Card, except for scoring. Season will be played with the most recent NMJL Card when the season starts. HOME team will provide tiles, mat, racks, and dice. Matches will be played with 8 jokers and no blanks. Instructional cards/field guides with tile explanations must be provided if not playing with a “standard” tile set. We kindly ask that all tiles used are easy to comprehend for all players. Any questions regarding particular tile sets should be directed to the League Representative. Set up of walls should not begin until all players are present. Players will roll dice to determine player who will begin as East. East will roll dice to break the first wall for the deal. All matches will be 4 games limited to 2 hours total. Any games not completed at the end of the time will score 0 points for all players. Fast play = more points to earn! All scores will be recorded and submitted by the Team Captain on the day of the match up, then will be verified by the League Representative or Loch Lloyd Country Club Representative. Photos of scorecards from matches approved and played outside of normal League Play should be emailed to and verified by the Team Captain and League Representative for record keeping.
Please be on time. Matches will start within 15-30 minutes of scheduled start of League Play. If a team does not have their player at the start of the first match, they will forfeit the entire match and score 0 points. Opponent will score 50 points for the match. A substitute/non-registered player or “Bob” makes the match ineligible for League Play scoring. You cannot play with three players. A League Representative may step in and play as a fourth player in the match as long as the League Representative is not on the same team. Players are expected to be honest and respectful at all times. Misconduct of any kind will not be tolerated and should be reported to The Loch Lloyd Mahjong League and Loch Lloyd Country Club Representative. Violating players will be suspended from the League without refund of dues. Thank you for limiting texts/phone calls during game play. The Loch Lloyd Mahjong League is designed to be welcoming and country club community driven. Playing with new people is encouraged to ensure the tables are filled and friendly!
THE WINNERS Season Champion will be determined by the team with the most match wins. In the event of a tie, the team highest cumulative score for the season wins. Season Champions will receive a cash prize and team trophy! Individual Season Champion will be determined by the highest cumulative score for the season.
