WHY FIVE ?

PROTECTION / FITTING / DESIGN: Five’s DNA.

We are glove specialists, and pride ourselves on making what some consider the best gloves ever created. Not that we’re smarter than other equipment brands, but simply because we only do gloves. All of our resources, human, technical, and financial, are devoted to a single product: gloves!

Every day, every hour, every minute, we are dedicated to the design, development, and production of top-quality gloves. Why? Because we’re convinced that the glove is an essential part of riders’ equipment, and it shouldn’t be considered a mere “fashion statement”.

The hand is both complex and fragile, since it’s so exposed in a fall. It’s made up of a large number of small parts: joints, bones, muscles, tendons, nerve endings. Designing a product that fits these constraints isn’t so simple. The hand is, more than anything, essential to our daily lives. So, it’s essential to protect it properly, with a glove that’s right for your sport. A FIVE glove, obviously.

You can’t design a glove in the same way you design a jersey. It has to be protective*, comfortable, durable, breathable, and fit the rider’s hand to transmit every movement without restriction. And this is truly a matter for specialists!

Gloves are therefore the vital link between you and your bike. Because, it’s a matter of faithfully reproducing through the handlebars what the rider has in mind.

We have more than 10 years of experience at the highest levels in motorcycle racing (World Championship MotoGP, Superbike, Endurance, Motocross, Enduro, etc...), which has helped us develop absolute mastery of technical constraints, both in terms of steering at high-speed on two wheels, and in reducing the risk of injury to the hand. We’ve leveraged this experience and, by adapting our concepts to this highly specific activity, we’ve transferred this knowledge to cycling.

There is a fundamental difference between making a beautiful glove, and making a truly efficient glove. Our goal is to bring you a combination of these elements in just one product.

Of course, on a bike, you pedal with your legs, but steering precision and finesse is expressed... through the handlebar! *Against blisters, against nature elements, against bad weather conditions, or in some cases against a fall. In the case of cycling, only a few of our gloves are certified as personal protective equipment, but wearing a glove is always more protective than not wearing any...

Designing a glove is one thing, but large-scale production, and duplicating its functionality in every size is another matter. We design our own concepts, draw up our own patterns for each and every size, determine the positioning of each protective element and each seam with millimetric precision, and we select all of our materials. The end result is a fit and feel that always provides an optimal compromise between protection and comfort. This remains true, whatever your size. Only a specialist can promise such consistent quality.

We have our own design and development centers in France and Italy, and we manufacture in our very own production facilities. In the end, this makes all the difference. To be sure you’re truly convinced, do something very simple: slide your hand into a FIVE glove.

You can choose comfort over protection, or you can opt for truly protective equipment, so you avoid getting hurt. With the DH, FIVE speaks to those for whom downhill riding means being aware of the risks, with this glove offering an exceptional level of protection, one that is perhaps unprecedented in cycling gloves until now. With its major experience at the highest levels of motocross and road racing Grand Prix, FIVE has developed an ultra-protective glove that you’ll forget you’re wearing, to the delight of downhill fanatics who demand extreme riding precision, without sacrificing safety. What you notice first about the DH is its ventilated polyurethane shells, which are directly copied from our motorcycle gloves. When riding downhill, the outside of the hand is particularly exposed. Trees and rocks are some of the many elements that your hand can brush against. This is why we’ve placed full-grain leather on the outside of the hand, along with a wide Stretch Kevlar® panel that includes a Soft PU protective shell. It’s all held together with Kevlar® stitching, for superior tear resistance. The edge of the radius enjoys 2 mm gel padding placed within an Airprene® band that measures 2 mm itself, ensuring excellent support for the wrist. The Soft TPR and Velcro® tab allows for ultra-precise adjustment, and the pull-tab makes on-off a breeze. The palm of the DH, in AX Suede® Cinco synthetic suede leather, features a silicone print offering ideal handlebar grip and suppleness worthy of the thinnest of gloves. The thumb covered in Terry Black MicroWipe™ fabric allows you to easily wipe off your brow after a rough descent. And finally, you can easily activate your GoPro using your smartphone, due to the conductive wire within the thumb and index fingers. The WP WARM features a breathable, weatherproof Hipora® membrane that stops water from penetrating into the glove, while allowing perspiration to evaporate. Thermal insulation is handled by a Thinsulate™ 80 g lining that is sufficiently insulating to limit the effect of low temperatures, while remaining thin enough not to hamper your movements. Comfort is optimized with an internal Bemberg™ lining for the zones that are in contact with the skin. Weatherproofing starts right from the topside construction in Windblock™ fabric. Night-time visibility isn’t left by the wayside either, with the inclusion of a black reflective 3M™ inset (discreet during the day, visible at night).

Protecting yourself from bad weather is a good thing, but protection from blisters or even a bad fall… that’s another story. And so, the palm receives multiple 2 mm gel padding zones concealed underneath 3 mm memory foam, all of which is placed in strategic contact zones with the handlebars… or with the ground. The fourchettes (finger contours) are made in Windblock™ fabric that is thinner than what’s used on the topside, maintaining optimal fit.
