As one of Mexico's top destination wedding spots, it is no wonder couples are gathering in the Los Cabos area to exchange vows. But just like each state in the U.S. has its rules and requirements for getting married, so does Los Cabos. Luckily, it is not difficult to obtain a marriage license in Los Cabos.

Same-sex marriage is legally recognized in Los Cabos. But of course, this is a crucial point when it comes to things like spousal benefits, so you’ll certainly want to confirm this is true for the state in which you live before making definite plans.

To legally marry, the following documents are required:

Current passport or driver's license.

Original copy of birth certificates.

Blood test certificate (lab work done in Mexico 48-24 hours before the ceremony).

Copy of identification (passport or driver's license); witnesses may not be biological parents and must be over 18 years old.

Copy of the immigration status document, typically obtain on migration upon entering the country.

Divorce or death certificate, if applicable.

Names, ages, addresses, nationalities, and occupations of both sets of parents.

Age Requirement

You must be 18 to obtain a marriage license in Los Cabos. With parental consent, boys who are at least 14 can get married and receive a permit.

Same-sex marriage is legal in Los Cabos. But of course, this is a crucial point when it comes to things like spousal benefits, so you’ll certainly want to confirm this is true for the state in which you live before making definite plans.

Blood Test in Los Cabos

Your blood work must be done in Mexico at least three to four days before the ceremony. Each person is tested for VDRL (venereal diseases), HIV, and Rh factor (blood group identifier). The results are valid for 15 days.

Staying in Mexico

Typically, couples and witnesses must be in Mexico at least three business days before the wedding. (This does not include Saturdays, Sundays, or Mexican holidays)

Death and Divorce Decrees

It is necessary to be divorced for one year before getting married in Mexico. You will need to provide a verified

dissolution of marriage and a certified copy of the final divorce decree.

A certified copy of the spouse's death certificate must be verified for those who are widowed and want to obtain a marriage license in Mexico.

Get Your Certificate

After the wedding, make sure to get your marriage certificate legalized in Mexico to be accepted as a valid document worldwide. You will also need to obtain your certified copy of the marriage certificate, which will be in Spanish.

Once you have your marriage certificate, you can process a legal translation in your country.

Many couples plan Destination Weddings as a beautiful alternative to a large, impersonal, and costly wedding at home for various reasons.

Naturally, as the wedding couple, you will want a fabulous location and an incredible celebration party after the ceremony.

When planning a wedding, our best advice as full-scope wedding planners is to first think about exactly what you are looking for and put it down in writing. We are sure you have thought about this since you got engaged, and now it is time to combine your ideas of what you would like your wedding to be and should certainly do this as one of your first exciting projects together.

When you have a wedding outside of your hometown, called a "Destination Wedding," it is somewhat different.

First of all, guests might be coming from around the world; Many families feel the responsibility to entertain or "care" for their guests when joining you for your wedding celebration. We agree with this; however, this depends upon the couple's and family's resources. In many cases, close family friends, relatives, grandparents, or godparents also like to "host" an event.

This situation can be done instead of an expensive wedding gift and should never be "expected." This topic is worth asking your parents about and ask them to make the initial inquiries. There are more than one set of parents nowadays; therefore, this can become a great way to involve everyone in the fun and the expense!

A typical wedding weekend at a destination away from the couple's hometown could be from Thursday through Sunday

during a long weekend. The following is a "typical" wedding weekend example in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

THURSDAY ARRIVAL

Welcome cocktail party for a couple of hours tops - short and sweet, with cocktails and a few appetizers served. Music is a must and sets the tone for the weekend.

Perhaps hand out a program of events if it was not sent in advance, including maps of the area, favorite restaurants and clubs, golf courses (with phone numbers for tee times), and tennis court locations, as well as snorkeling, shopping, and spa/salon information. This information could be included in a bright and colorful welcome bag for each couple or guest. Dinner is NOT your responsibility but can be hosted by the wedding couple, parents, or family friends if desired.

FRIDAY

Snorkeling tour, golf, fishing, or shopping, followed by a luncheon for the closest friends and the wedding party. The couple usually hosts this, but sometimes, it can be an optional activity where each guest will pay for their meal.

REHEARSAL PARTY EVENT

Could include a sunset cruise or a fun, casual dinner for everyone at a great restaurant in town, say 7 - 10 p.m. Those that wish can stay in town and hit the clubs after dinner. We strongly recommend that as the couple, you encourage guests to head back to their hotels by midnight so that everyone gets a good night's sleep in preparation for the big day! Usually, one side of the family traditionally hosts this evening.

SATURDAY

This should start as a low-key day, as your wedding will typically begin in the late afternoon. We recommend a relaxing morning, a little beach or pool or meditation time. Then the getting ready part starts, where you can invite your

wedding party, moms, and even grandmothers. Those who would prefer to hang out at the pool or get a massage are OK too, but it is not a good day for a lot of drinking or a sunburn! The couple and the wedding party should plan sufficient time to rest, at least an hour before they leave for the ceremony.

THE EVENT

Make sure to allocate enough time for photos on your wedding site, both sides of the wedding party, and then for family portraits. This should take place at least 2 hours before the ceremony as it will give plenty of time for everyone to have a glass of champagne, touch up hair or makeup, etc.

Your wedding and reception should last a minimum of three hours, with 5 hours being sufficient. We recommend that transportation is provided to take guests back to their hotels or drop them in town at a favorite club for those who want to continue partying.

SUNDAY

Some of your guests will head back home; however, urge them to leave on Monday so you will all have a chance to meet again, talk about the wedding, and make plans to see each other again soon. It is a great day to relax at the pool, beach, or a favorite local restaurant.

Those friends and family who are staying on for more vacation time are now on their own! It is time for the wedding couple to have their honeymoon. If you have all been staying together at one hotel, we recommend that you move to another, in a more secluded location. On your honeymoon, enjoy being pampered! It would be best if you did not have to worry about entertaining family or friends.

We have had some couples who rent a car and travel up the Baja peninsula to a very remote location.

A wedding professional offers the most reliable resources to plan your Wedding Destination; he/she will save you countless hours and money. Her/His responsibilities can include:

1. Making all legal arrangements for your wedding.

2. Booking your wedding officiant.

3. Providing a complete "plan" once you have decided what type of wedding you would like to host.

4. Providing recommendations and booking all locations, music, menus, flowers, transportation, and any other services you may require.

5. Providing recommendations on local hotels, villas, and other lodgings in various price ranges.

6. On-site coordination of each event.

7. Photography and videography coordination.

8. Liaison between event locations and client.

9. Most important - responsible, caring service so that you can arrive, relax, and not worry about anything!

An essential rule in the planning of any wedding is enjoying – both what you are doing and who is making this dream day come true.

From Jewish and Christian celebrations to week-long Hindu affairs and traditional Catholic nuptials in Los Cabos you will find inspiration on wedding themes and styles for all kind of culture and traditions.

Do you want something traditional or romantic? Outdoors or indoors? Would you like to incorporate as much of your culture as you can into the wedding ceremony, or would you like to keep things simple and small? Answers to these types of questions could also help you when choosing from either of the wedding categories below.

LEGAL CEREMONY

A civil ceremony is an official way to get married in Los Cabos, as it legally changes your marital status from "single" to "married" and is recognized worldwide as a legal marriage. The ceremony lasts between 10-20 minutes and is performed in Spanish (translator optional) by a designated officiant. A civil ceremony in Los Cabos is like a courthouse/ Justice of the Peace ceremony in the United States.

Civil ceremonies can be performed at the local Registry Office Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Alternatively; civil ceremonies may be performed at a location of your choice for an additional fee.

Keep in mind that you cannot get married at the Registry Office on Saturday, Sunday, or any Mexican holiday.

RELIGIOUS OR SYMBOLIC CEREMONY

This kind of ceremony is like a typical U.S. wedding in that it allows you to choose your officiant, personalize your vows,

and include special readings, songs and rituals. A symbolic ceremony is not legally valid and will not change your marital status. You may choose to have a civil ceremony in your hometown and a symbolic ceremony in Los Cabos.

SAME-SEX MARRIAGE (LGTBQ+)

Same-sex marriage is legally recognized in Los Cabos; couples of all orientations and identities have mixed-gender wedding parties. Let the wedding planners connect you with the perfect LGBT-friendly venue that matches your personality and style, turn your decor ideas into a concrete wedding design plan, and coordinate all the essential day details that will exceed your expectations.

BOHEMIAN BEACH ELOPEMENT

Los Cabos offers the best backdrops for a romantic "running away" wedding. Packages include Minister, Photographer, location, personal flowers and live music.

JEWISH WEDDINGS

Although there are no Jewish synagogues in Los Cabos, couples wanting a Jewish wedding may fly in their rabbi to perform the ceremony.

INDIAN WEDDINGS

Hindu weddings are a long process with various rituals that may take days to be executed. Every single custom and practice in a wedding ceremony has deep philosophical and spiritual significance. Throughout the world, Hindus adhere to these sets of rituals and continue the traditions of marriage unique amongst those in the world.

CATHOLIC NUPTIALS

Catholicism only allows marriages to be performed in a church. You will also need to consult with your hometown church officials, as a Catholic wedding in Los Cabos requires additional paperwork from the church you attend.

VOWS RENEWAL

Vow renewal ceremonies are unique and meaningful while wholly re-committing yourselves to each other.

PREHISPANIC WEDDING

Prehispanic, Nuptial Purification Elopement. Timeless and meaningful ancestral traditions are undertaken in this sacred seaside celebration.

L O C A L W E D D I N G C U S T O M S

A destination wedding in Los Cabos gives couples the opportunity to plan a personalized wedding set against a beautiful backdrop. You may choose to exchange vows in a charming chapel with a traditional Spanish ceremony or you may want to include customs, traditions, and aesthetics unique to Los Cabos and Mexico. Some of the most popular include:

CHURCH WEDDING

A church wedding is great for couples looking to incorporate traditional religious beliefs and customs into their marriage. A destination wedding planner can help you find the perfect spot, whether it is a quaint chapel located on a resort or historical beauty inside the city proper. Although the prevailing religion in Mexico is Christian/Catholic, Los Cabos welcomes and offers church services for various beliefs.

Some of the most known churches and cathedrals in the Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo area include:

Mision de San Jose del Cabo Anuiti Catholic ChurchA beautiful historic mission built by missionary Father Nicholas Tamaral and Visitador Jose Echeverria in 1730.

Parroquia de San Lucas Evangelista - The central Catholic Church in Cabo San Lucas for bilingual masses. It is simple structure has not changed much in appearance since its original construction in 1730. It only has ceiling fans for cooling.

Santuario de Guadalupe Catholic Church - This Cabo San Lucas church boasts a more modern construction with a spacious inside. The Feast of the Virgin Guadalupe is celebrated here each December 12th with masses, parades, fairs, and fireworks.

MEXICAN-THEMED WEDDING

If you want to infuse your wedding with the fiesta spirit, there is no better way to do so than through a celebration of bright colors and signature Mexican style. Think Frida Kahlo, embroidery and pom poms, folk art, mariachi bands, taco bars, Mexican candy, pinatas, and paper flowers.

SPIRITUAL WEDDING

Getting married in Los Cabos offers couples a unique opportunity to incorporate Mexico's rich prehispanic roots into their wedding ceremony. A Mayan wedding includes a ceremony, offering, and banquet that pays tribute to centuries of spiritual history.

The Ceremony: An officiant or shaman will draw a circle on the ground and invite the couple to step inside the circle. Then, the couple will exchange vows, rings, and any unique objects that are meaningful to both. Copal incense is burned to purify the union, accompanied by traditional songs, flutes, and drums.

The Offering: After the ceremony, the couple will offer gifts to the four elements (earth, wind, fire, water). Contributions may include corn (symbolizing the beginning of life together) and cocoa (symbolizing wealth and prosperity).

The Banquet: Friends and family enjoy a traditional Mayan feast, which may include chicken/beef/pork tamales, cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork dish), poc chuc (citrusmarinated pork dish), avocado, beans, rice, and pozol (local drink made with corn and cocoa).

BREATHTAKING VENUES COMBINING DESERT AND SEA

Los Cabos offers a variety of venues ideally suited for your next event from beautiful restaurants to beachfront terraces, farmlands and Canyons.

Los Cabos is beyond ideal for whatever kind of wedding you are dreaming of, from toes-in-the-sand casual to over-the-top elegant. Check out the Sunset Chapel at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach if you want a beach wedding but still with a church ceremony, and Hotel El Ganzo can put together an unforgettable event that celebrates your diversity and creativity. Combine all- inclusive with uber

pampering and you have the Grand Velas for a superluxurious celebration on a golden sand beach, expansive oceanfront terrace, or opulent ballroom. Flora Farms will host a truly organic celebration in one of their numerous private outdoor areas like a mango grove with barn (where Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo exchanged I do’s!), or an herb garden amphitheater. For a more spiritual and holistic union, Baja Wellness offers symbolic weddings with different ceremonial rituals. Most resorts offer a variety of possibilities, and most include wedding planning as part of their services at no additional fee.

Los Cabos has been selected as the perfect place to get married by many celebrities, including actors, singers, athletes and rock stars due to its perfect weather.

KEITH RICHARDS AND PATTI HANSEN

On December 18th, 1983, the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist married model and actress Patti Hansen at the Hotel Finisterra, Cabo San Lucas. Family and friends attended, and Mick Jagger was, of course, the best man.

ELI MANNING AND ABBY MCGREW

Quarterback Eli Manning married his college sweetheart

Abby McGrew in a beachfront wedding on April 19th, 2008. Sixty guests joined the intimate ceremony at the One&Only Palmilla Hotel overlooking the Sea of Cortés.

ADAM LEVINE AND BEHATI PRINSLOO

The lead singer of Maroon 5 and Victoria Secret model Behati Prinsloo married at Flora Farms in San Jose del Cabo on July 19th, 2014. More than 300 guests were there for the happy couple’s special day, and I’m sure the organic menu of Flora Farms impressed everyone. Not wanting to leave anything to chance, the couple held a rehearsal dinner

beach party on the Friday before the wedding at El Dorado Golf & Beach Club.

NAYA RIVERA AND RYAN DORSEY

Glee actress Naya Rivera married the actor Ryan Dorsey on July 19th, 2014 in a private ceremony in Cabo San Lucas. The July 19th date was especially important to Ryan because it is also his birthday. The happy couple invited only 12 close family members and kept the entire affair a secret from the media until after the wedding.

MICHAEL PHELPS AND NICOLE JOHNSON

Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps married his longtime girlfriend Nicole Johnson in October 2016 at El Dorado Golf and Beach Club in Los Cabos. Guests were greeted with live Mariachi music, a taco bar, shots of tequila and a bottle of Corona beer.

KELSEA BALLERINI AND MORGAN EVANS

Country music stars Kelsea Ballerini and Morgan Evans married in a ceremony by the ocean in Cabo San Lucas on December 2nd, 2017. After a whirlwind romance and a nine-month engagement, Kelsea commented on her Twitter account, “Woke up to the hottest human I’ve ever seen wearing a ring and ate leftover wedding cake for breakfast hello marriage.”

Los Cabos comprises two towns, San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, linked by a 20-mile corridor. But these two sister towns couldn't be more different. San José del Cabo is a traditional Mexican town renowned for its Art District where you can find the best restaurants from all over the world and stylish shops. If you're looking for a lively downtown vibe, bustling marina and an all-day, all-night party atmosphere, Cabo San Lucas is the place for you.

Whether it is surfing, snorkeling, stand-up paddle boarding or simply a romantic walk by the shore, Los Cabos has unique experiences for you and your guests.

SUNRISE MEDITATIONS

Wake up on your wedding day with the blessings of Naam to give love and gratitude to the creator for giving you this day. These special Divine Spiritual Alchemy sunrise meditations at the beach are designed to synchronize your energy and attune you with the flow of the Universe, opening your heart and expanding your mind for your big and special day.

KAYAKING

Enjoy the protected coves and serene waters of Chileno Bay, Santa Maria Bay, and Lovers Beach. As the approach is usually silent via kayak, it is easier not to startle wildlife naturally.

There are also glass bottom kayaks that allow you the see

stunning sea life as you paddle through The Arch. In this famous Baja Peninsula landmark, The Pacific Ocean joins the celestial emerald waters of the Sea of Cortés.

SPORTFISHING IN LOS CABOS

The waters of Los Cabos enclose the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortés. Both consist of prolific marine environments and submarine seamounts; countless species can be found anywhere from right along the shoreline to 60 miles. Its world-renowned striped marlin fishery highlights big game fishing in Los Cabos. Still, other marine sportfishing includes Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado. Los Cabos is one of the world's best sportfishing destinations; more Marlin and Swordfish get caught here than anywhere else in the world. World-famous sport fishing tournaments, such as Bisbee's Black & Blue Marlin and East Cape Offshore derbies, are held annually. Catch & Release is the general rule.

INSIDER TIPS

LOCATION: Los Cabos refers to two towns— Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo — found at the end of Baja California Sur, about 1,000 miles south of San Diego, California, just south of the Tropic of Cancer.

POPULATION:

Approximately 320,000 people live in Los Cabos.

CLIMATE: It’s a subtropical desert. During the summer, the highs can reach 90° F with sporadic showers. Winter evenings may drop to 60° F, with daytime highs near 80° F.

TIME ZONE:

Los Cabos is on Mountain Time (MT), which is one hour later than Pacific Time.

LANGUAGE: In Mexico, Spanish is the official language, but English is widely spoken throughout Los Cabos, especially by those within the hospitality industry.

ELECTRICITY:

120 volts/60 hertz. Electrical outlets are the same as those used in the U.S.

BANKS AND CURRENCY:

The official unit of currency is the Mexican peso (MXN), but the U.S. dollar (USD) is widely accepted. All major Mexican national banks are represented here and are usually open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Many locations have ATMs that accept U.S. bank cards the same way they do in the U.S. Transaction fees may be higher, and some ATMs can dispense both Mexican pesos and U.S. dollars. While you can exchange dollars for pesos at the airport, many hotels or at any bank, banks usually have the best rates.

Credit cards are welcome at most major restaurants and hotels. When using your credit card, the statement total will appear in pesos at the exchange rate posted on that day.

EXCHANGE RATE: Mexican peso equaled .050 U.S. dollar. This rate changes regularly. Check what the rate is when you are ready to travel and once you arrive.

COMMUNICATION:

Most major wireless carriers offer packages that provide messaging, calling and data services at reasonable rates. Check with your provider and ask about roaming rates in Mexico, international package options and other travelrelated services prior to your trip. The Internet works quite well throughout Los Cabos, and Wi-Fi is a standard amenity at a number of businesses and most hotels and resorts, so Skype, FaceTime, Whatsapp and other Wi-Fi–enabled apps are a cost-effective way to stay connected. To call the U.S. from your U.S. cell phone, dial 00 + 1 + area code + phone number. To call locally to landlines, just dial the seven-digit phone number.

To call locally to local cell phones (within the same area code), dial 044 + phone number.

To call Mexico outside of Los Cabos, dial 01 + area code + phone number.

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS: Mexico celebrates a number of public holidays annually. Except for banks and government offices being closed, your vacation plans should not be disrupted because of them.

To get from one town to the other, you can expect to pay between $50 and $60. Red and yellow taxi vans operate in San José del Cabo; blue and green vans cruise Cabo San Lucas. They are available 24 hours a day and are never far. Buses run regularly and cost $2–3, depending on the exchange rate. Accounting for stops at major hotels along The Corridor, the ride takes between both towns can take about an hour. As of 2018, Uber is also available in Los Cabos.

AIRPORT & TRAVEL DETAILS

To enter Mexico, you need a valid passport. All foreign travelers must pass through immigration and customs. Once you have been cleared by immigration officials, collect your luggage and proceed to customs where you push a button on something that looks a lot like a traffic light; if the light turns red, your luggage has been selected for inspection. After getting through customs and immigration, you may walk past timeshare sales people eager for your attention. Unless you’ve arranged pickup with your hotel, yellow and white mini shuttles are a good option. They are less expensive than taxis, but they won’t depart unless full, so you may find yourself waiting a few minutes.

Cab drivers and other pre-arranged transportation providers have a designated waiting area just outside. Just 20 minutes north of San José del Cabo, the Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), services more than 400 domestic, international and private flights weekly. At press time, the following airlines offered flights to Los Cabos: Aeroméxico, Aero Pacífico, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Calafia Airlines, Delta, Frontier, Interjet, Magnicharters, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, Sunwing, United Airlines, VivaAerobús, Volaris and WestJet.

Nonstop flights and connections to Los Cabos are available from numerous cities across the U.S., including

Atlanta; Charlotte; Chicago; Dallas/ Fort Worth; Denver; Detroit; Houston; Kansas City, Mo.; Minneapolis; Newark; Phoenix; Salt Lake City and Seattle. From California, there are flights and connections available from Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose. From Canada, there are flights available from Calgary, Edmonton, Kelowna, Toronto,Vancouver and Winnipeg.

The smaller, less frequented airport Cabo San Lucas International Airport (CSL) services mostly private aircraft. It is located just 10 minutes away from downtown Cabo San Lucas.
