The conference is targeted at exercise and wellness professionals, managers and sales staff passionate about furthering their knowledge. So if you are a personal trainer, gym instructor, group exercise instructor, salesperson or club owner/manager, this event is for you!

REPs Continuing Education Credits (CECs)

The conference is eligible for 20 CECs from REPs (this together with work experience is enough CECs for two years REPs registration).

Pre-Conference events earn additional CECs (See pages 6, 7 and 8) To deliver the conference we have partnered with New Zealand’s leading education providers and suppliers.

How the sessions work

The conference is held over two days (27th/28th November) involving over 75 sessions! With up to nine sessions running at any given time. With the exception of a few limited place workshops, you are able to pick and choose your sessions on the day.

There is also a series of one day pre-conference events on Thursday 25th and Friday 26th November.

This event is a great opportunity to network, so:

(This is THE best networking opportunity of the year and we encourage you to take full advantage of this!)

The AUT café will be open, with a basic selection of food and drink.

If you prefer to save your hard earned cash you can bring your own along. If you have specific dietary needs it’s a good idea to bring your own special treats just in case the café does not have anything specific to suit your needs.

The conference venue has a comprehensive fitness centre with changing rooms and showers (just in case you want to workout).

Practical Sessions

Remember to bring your workout gear so you can take part in the practical sessions (venue has shower/changing facilities)

Accommodation

Low price accommodation can be found on various websites.

Backpacker accommodation is available from as little as $30 a night, with hotels and motels accommodation around $100 per room (up to 2 people) a night. See opposite page for suggestions of online booking sites.

Free Limited on Site Accommodation There is limited free accommodation for those who live outside of Auckland. We urge people who wish to take up the FREE accommodation to book early to avoid disappointment. Limited to 140 individuals in total, see page 25 for more information

Onsite Accommodation:

Can be booked on a first in first served basis. If you are interested in taking up the option of onsite accommodation then simply tick the appropriate box on the booking form (page 27) or indicate this on the online booking form. Additional information on the accommodation is available on page 26.

Airport Transfers:

Shuttles are available to and from the Airport at reasonable rates and there are shuttles leaving the terminals every 10 minutes.

PreBooked Shuttles: Super Shuttles www.supershuttle.co.nz is a reputable company and offers substantial discounts for group bookings. For example, a shuttle for one person from Auckland Airport to the AUT campus in Akoranga would cost $32 however a booking of 5 to the same place would only be $60 ($12 per person) so if you are travelling with other people then you will save the most by sharing a ride Public Transport Bus: www.airbus.co.nz This bus takes you from Auckland airport to Britomart and costs $15 one way or $22 return.

Eating Out:

Eating out at the Viaduct is a common Auckland thing to do. You will find many restaurants there with a range of cuisine and prices.

If you are looking for more economical restaurants and don’t mind alternative cuisines there are a range of Korean, Chinese and Japanese restaurants in upper Queen Street.

Handouts:

This year FitnessNZ will be operating an online handouts library.

You will be given a username and a password so you can download session notes from the internet in the weeks before the conference.

This will also give you the ability to access notes after the event should you change the sessions which you were planning on attending over the weekend.

Sport and Exercise Science New Zealand (SESNZ) are pleased to inform all GetNZ Active delegates that this year, for the first time, there will be several presentations over the duration of the conference by leading sport and exercise science practitioners from SESNZ on topics of key interest to the fitness industry. Keep an eye on the website as this will be updated as specific SESNZ session details become available.

ADAM FLOYD Adam Floyd is the director of Regenerate Physiotherapy in Perth, Western Australia, which incorporates a commercial rehabilitation facility called Regenerate Fitness and Rehabilitation. The centre specialises in exercise programs for clients with osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, spinal pain and other musculo-skeletal injuries and pain. Adam has 19 years fitness industry experience and 11 years as a physiotherapist.

His unique series of presentations aims to bridge the gap between the 2 industries and allow personal trainers/exercise physiologists to more effectively deal with clients with pain or injuries. He presents both nationally and internationally at industry conferences and conducts in house training for various health clubs. He has been conducting the GymED series of seminars in Perth for 10years.

Vibration Training Group Ex is taking the world by storm. Come and try it for yourself and see how you can shake up your Group Ex classes with this amazing Technology. This 90-minute workshop will take you through one hour of theory and 30 minutes of group ex on the vibration training equipment.

Myofascial pain and self releases

Australian Physiotherapist Adam Floyd examines the causes of myofascial pain, the common problem areas and how you can assist your clients to release them. Pain free clients equals better training.

Shoulder impingement syndrome

Shoulder impingement syndrome is very common, particularly with above head exercises and more so in older clients. Pilates back to basics

Pilates is about enhancing everyday activities from bending down to pick something up or for training for a specific activity and thus be able to improve the quality of life. The method is built around a number of principles and on some important foundations. Lateral thoracic breathing, neutral pelvis and neutral spine are of utmost important.

If a solid foundation is lacking everything that follows on will not be effective. Does Stress Influence Muscle Growth & Weight Loss?

In this 90 minute lecture you will understand adrenal fatigue and the impact the six foundation principles have on client goals. FELICITY MOLLOY Felicity Molloy is well known in the New Zealand world of contemporary dance as an innovator, teacher and applied researcher. She teaches across a wide range of physical applications and communities and to massage, dance and osteopathy students. A scientific analysis

In late 2009 a report appeared in Time magazine titled “Why Exercise Won’t Make You Thin”. The debate as to whether exercise (or increasing energy expenditure) can positively contribute to weight loss in overweight and obese adults has received extensive research. Much of this evidence is contradictory with some “experts” claiming that in general, exercise is “pretty useless for weight loss”. In this controversial session, a scientific analysis will be made addressing whether exercise can in fact make you thin.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: This session will provide exercise professionals with good data to enable them to develop effective weight loss programs and clearly understand the value of exercise in any weight loss program.

Weight Loss and Insulin Resistance in overweight and obese children and adolescents is there a right formula?

In recent publications in Australia it has been suggested that the current problems associated with obesity and Insulin Resistance (IR) in children and adolescents has been exaggerated. In this interesting lecture an effort will be made to answer this question based on recent scientific analysis. The session will also give an overview of the roles of diet, resistance training, aerobic exercise and the use of vibration platforms in reducing weight and improving IR levels in children and adolescents. Results of research conducted at CHISM over the past 18 months will be discussed.

STEVE SETH Steve has been instructing Group Exercise classes for the last 17 years and has taught - and in some cases continues to teach - pretty much every class format going (hi-lo, pump, Spinning, Cardio kick-box, Zumba, Step, Circuit, cardio funk/dance, flexibility/relaxation, and on and on and on) as well as working as a Fitness Instructor, Studio Co-ordinator and Fitness Club Manager both in New Zealand and the UK. All bedrooms are private and have their own lockable door, and contain a large single bed. Each apartment contains five/six bedrooms, one large living area, kitchen and two bathrooms.
