The conference is targeted at exercise and wellness professionals, managers and sales staff passionate about furthering their knowledge. So if you are a personal trainer, gym instructor, group exercise instructor, salesperson or club owner/manager, this event is for you!

The conference is eligible for 20 CECs from REPs, Pre-Conference events earn additional CECs. To deliver the conference we have partnered with New Zealand’s leading education providers and suppliers.

Session times and breaks

The conference is held over two days (24th/25th November), involving over 100 sessions! With up to twelve sessions running at any given time - you are able to pick and choose your sessions on the day. There is also a series of one day pre-conference workshops on Friday 23th November.

Sessions range from 60 to 90 minutes in duration (check session schedule for details), with breaks between sessions of between 15 and 30 minutes, longer for lunch.

Saturday sessions finish earlier to allow those going to Fitness Industry Awards to attend.

How the sessions work

NEW in 2012 Master Workshops Designed to introduce the latest research in a particular area, with clear links as to what this means for exercise professionals on a day to day basis. It also includes other presenters in the field, who will briefly summarise their upcoming sessions throughout the conference.

PT Breakfast – Sunday 7.30-8.45am An interactive panel discussion for PTs, lead by PT Business Guru Scott Krywulycz.

Explore everything from emerging trends in PTs businesses worldwide, through to the challenges of emerging exercise trends, and the implications on Personal Trainers business models.

Networking Event – Friday 7-9pm Meet fellow attendees, as well as FitEx presenters, in a relaxed social setting.

BOSU FOR KIDS - TEACHING BALANCE FOR PLAY, SPORT AND EVERYDAY MOVEMENT. Gain a greater understanding of the challenges that we as Fitness Professionals face when trying to get our kids to move. Using the BOSU Balance Trainer this workshop focuses on the integration of body and special awareness and how we can train to improve balance and movement skills. Steve Jensen has been helping and driving his own and other businesses since 1977. From being the CEO of a large chain of health clubs in the 80’s and early 90’s Steve is now the CEO and Founder of Impact Training Corporation, and The National Sales Academy which are companies that were specifically created to help people improve their sales through learning and implementing cutting edge communication and selling skills and strategies. He is a much sought after International presenter who has presented worldwide. Steve is a master practitioner and trainer of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), a graduate of Tom Hopkins academy of Sales Excellence and Certified DISC Presenter (a communication process that specialises in human behavior patterns). Steve is highly regarded in the fields of sales, sales management, the art of communication and also in presenting techniques and public speaking.

Information will be made available to all attendees electronically (and a printout given to those staying at the Onsite Accommodation) about local amenities.

This will include places to eat, drink, grocery stores, and local taxi company numbers.

Subway sell a range of items that will meet most peoples dietary requirements. They also sell coffee and drinks.

Practical Sessions

Low price accommodation can be found at www.wotif.com. Backpacker accommodation is available from as little as $30 a night, with hotels and motels accommodation from $90 per room (up to 2 people) a night.

Some sessions will require physical activity so don’t forget to pack clothes you can move about in. If you are unable (or chose not) to take part in any practical session you are still welcome to observe.

Shuttles from the airport: Shuttles operate 24 hours a day. They have a range of prices but are generally cheaper if there are 2 or more people going in the same direction.

FitnessNZ operate an online handouts library. You will be given a password so you can download session notes from the internet in the weeks before the conference.

This will also give you the ability to access notes after the event should you change the sessions which you were planning on attending over the weekend.

Taxis: We do not recommend the use of taxis. It’s usually a HUGE fare from the airport even on a day with no traffic. One of our presenters caught a taxi in the past and got a $200+ bill! Use taxis with extreme caution and try for a set rate if you can negotiate one with the driver.

Transportation:

The conference is being held in Auckland at AUT’s North Shore campus on Akoranga Drive. A detailed map will be posted to all attendees prior to the event.

Parking: There is parking available at the AUT. Please respect any signs indicating reserved spaces, disability spaces, and most importability if you are parking in a PAY and DISPLAY area, please observe operating hours and pay the appropriate parking fee.

Onsite Facilities Changing Rooms: The changing rooms include showers and allow you to change between active sessions and lectures. They are located in AH block.

Gym Can’t go without your regular workout? For $9 you can use the AUT gym located in AH block, please note the gym has regular hours, also the gym may be closed at times for exclusive use of a FitEx session.

Public Transport from the airport: The airbus runs approximately every 15 mins and is $16 one way or $26 return. This runs to Queen St (a short walk from Britomart transport centre) where you can connect to the Northern Express (Britomart To Albany) Bus to Akoranga Station for $3.40 then walk via the bridge to the AUT Campus.

Rental Cars: Thrifty offer a Metro car $45 a day no airport fee with 100 km included per day. This is a great offer, normally airport fees alone range from $20-$40 a day on top of the daily rental rates. Other options available online are: www.thrifty.co.nz, www.avis.co.nz, www.budget.co.nz, www.hertz.co.nz, www.europcar.co.nz.

ONSITE ACCOMMODATION Change for 2012. This year we are still heavily subsidising the onsite accommodation, meaning you only pay $25 per night. Spaces are limited and allocated on a first in - first served basis.

All bedrooms are private and have

their own lockable door, and contain a large single bed as shown in the photo below. Each apartment contains five/ six bedrooms, one large living area/ kitchen and two bathrooms. The living area includes seating and a modern kitchen (ideal for making meals). All apartments are of mixed gender and are non smoking. Please provide your own towels, bedding and linen.

SPRINZ Strength & Conditioning Conference 22-23 November 2012 AUT Akoranga Campus This conference is for strength and conditioning trainers, with an emphasis on practical applications based on research evidence. Traditionally pelvic floor exercises have been the domain of Pilates, mind body and yoga programs, but now that core training is part of most group exercises classes and personal training workouts, it is the responsibility of every fitness professional to have a working understanding of how the pelvic floor plays an integral role in the core. This interactive session

will combine anatomy with practical demonstrations and useful imagery to encourage activation of this unique muscle that is found in both men and women. Supported by the Continence Foundation of Australia, Pelvic Floor First Ambassador, Marietta Mehanni, will provide tips on how best to implement pelvic floor exercises into any fitness program or core workout.

Isolation vs Integration

The definition of core stability and programmes developed for core stability are highly variable. Furthermore, programmes are often developed with a poor understanding of the neuromuscular control of the trunk and the effects of different exercises and postures on the forces acting on the spine. This session aims to describe the functionality of key trunk muscles during the performance of exercises and functional tasks in different postures. Such information will provide a better understanding when designing programmes to improve neuromuscular control of the spine.

Understanding the cause of tightness

Want to learn how to best help your clients who have chronic back and hip pain? In this practical session, Physiotherapist Tanya Winter teaches you the knowledge and skills required for the management and prevention of these problems. Learn basic rehabilitative exercises and strengthening techniques to give to your clients to help them with their injuries and improve their core stability. Based on the latest Physiotherapy research from the University of Queensland on core stability, in this practical session you will look at specific deep core muscles around the hips and pelvis, how to assess their function, and simple cues and Pilates-based exercises to get your clients to activate these muscles correctly.

In this “Integrating Pilates” Workshop a fusion of Nia, Joseph H. Pilates & Ron Fletcher the fundamentals of spine mobility and stability through five primary joint actions stimulating spine strength and flexibility to enhance the ease and function of total body movement. Inter-vertebral (between the vertebrae) movement is essential to a strong and relaxed, supported spine.

We will work on the floor and standing using the Stretch Out Strap to sence and activate intrinsic / extrinsic activation of muscle and connective tissue in relationship to the bones. You will leave this workshop with a sense of bodycentering and balance throughout your nervous system; you will feel better in your posture when lying down, sitting, standing and walking.

Stress is generally accepted to be a bad thing, but this is not always the case. Our stress response systems evolved over hundreds of thousands of years in response to certain survival threats, and our ability to adapt effectively determines whether stress is good or bad for us. However, our modern world has created a host of new social stressors that hijack our stress response systems and create a cascade of autonomic, neuroendocrine, metabolic and immune system responses that can lead to a range of physical and psychiatric disorders such as insulin resistance, obesity, anxiety, Alzheimer’s disease and depression. Prescription guidelines or how to structure the resistance training program; what to base decisions on regarding intensity (sets, reps and load) of training; when and how to combine resistance exercise with aerobic exercise are topics becoming increasingly more common in scientific articles. In academia, she is a senior lecturer at AUT University where she is involved with teaching and research in the areas of sport nutrition and public health nutrition. He is the co-director of Kaizen Exercise Physiologists in the Sunshine Coast, Australia. Dave specialises in helping clients perform at their peak physical levels whether it be in their sport, hobby, or work.

He particularly enjoys the challenge of helping injured clients return to high performance. Dave was a senior lecturer in Exercise Rehabilitation and Resistance Training in Exercise Rehabilitation for 10 years and completed a Masters degree in Physical Education at Otago University. Dave was the head trainer for the New Zealand Black Sox for two successful World Series campaigns, and worked with NZ hockey for several Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Duncan has had 30 years of clinical experience in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy. Grant Mawston (Dr)
