Welcome to FitEx 2019, or as I like to call it ‘the conversation starter for the multitude of opportunities for our industry’.

FitEx is now in its 15th year and its development and progression has very much mirrored the development of the exercise industry. While conditioning and body transformation are still part of what our industry offers, it’s no longer the dominant theme. Everything from mindfulness through to exercise as medicine are growing in both sessions on our schedule, as well as being an integrated part of what our industry is offering to the NZ public.

So, FitEx is very much about pulling together all the elements that we collectively need to make this happen. Not only all the different sessions for exercise modalities, layered together with genetics, hormones and energy systems, but we include the ‘business of fitness’ as well as the science - so what you choose to deliver is both sustainable for you as much as it is delivering on what your clients need.

We are now 13th worst, in the world, for inactivity levels (as measured by the NZ government, and reported to the World Health Organisation). While on one level this is a crisis, this also provides a massive opportunity for us to be part of the solution - we should and can make a significant impact on what is now recognised by the WHO as a pandemic globally. About Derek Barton Derek is known as “The Brand Man,” with over 34 years of building brands. From 1985 to 2005 he was the head of Marketing at Gold’s Gym International, helping to build Gold’s Gym into one of the most respected and recognized brands in the fitness industry and become the largest international co-ed gym chain with 600 locations in 43 states and 27 countries. During his tenure, Gold’s Gym received numerous awards and accolades for its innovative marketing, with many ads being reprinted in advertising and educational textbooks. In 2005, marking his 20th year of building and protecting an American icon, Derek and Gold’s Gym were featured in America’s Greatest Brands book.

GETTING THERE Getting to Auckland Airlines/Airfares Out of town and need to get to Auckland? We suggest you book your airfares as early as possible to secure the cheapest rate. Try looking online and shopping around with the best deals.

Getting to the Venue Shuttles from the airport: Shuttles operate 24 hours a day. They have a range of prices and are often cheaper when sharing with others. This is a great option if you are coming as a group.

Accommodation is provided on a first in first served basis, and is available for Friday 22 November (the night before the conference) and Saturday 23 November 2019.

Accommodation units consist of 5 private lockable bedrooms per unit with a shared lounge and bathroom facilities (2 bathrooms per 5 rooms).

All bedrooms are private and have their own lockable door, and contain a large single bed. Each apartment contains five/six bedrooms, one large living area/kitchen and two bathrooms.

The living area includes seating and a modern kitchen (ideal for making meals). All apartments are of mixed gender and are non smoking. Please provide your own towels, bedding and linen.

Everyone will be connected just like Uber. The first thing is to take a step back from the current model and allow yourself to see the big picture. Analyze how big the impact of future technology has on the fitness industry. From new booking systems that can be digitalized and scanned through our phones as well as access to studios. We are able to measure, track and monitor our bodies’ blood oxygen and heart rate while training in an altitude room. All of these things were only available to the elite such as at the Australian Institute of Sport are now offered to everyday people. It’s not a coincidence that the fastest growing studio chains utilize some of the best client tracking technology in the world. They are able to prove the results to their clients during and after training sessions.

Connection is going to become vital within our industry. I believe allied health professionals will connect more with the health and fitness community. A blending of technology, mindset, fitness, and business will begin to emerge and we are on the forefront of this emergence.

Meghan Jarvis A former World Class BMX bicycle racer, Meghan came to Australia to play professional basketball and ended up staying as a lead lecturer at the Australian Institute of Fitness. She most recently appeared as a ‘Ninja’ on Channel Nine’s Australian Ninja Warrior. In this interactive workshop we will first explore what MI is, and, how it works, before examining the elements that are of particular relevance to fitness professionals. Part of this discussion will be around the practical use of MI within typical environments, e.g. how to use MI when the focus regularly shifts between conversation/ exercise execution/conversation etc.

From here we will explore several motivational techniques which will be examined and applied to real situations and scenarios that occur within the industry. Participants will be encouraged to identify some of the more common motivational problems they face day to day, and will get an opportunity to practice the skills and techniques learnt to achieve better outcomes for clients.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) for fitness professionals Matthew Williams If you asked a group of 100 exercise hopefuls to explain the term, ‘motivation to exercise’, I’m sure most of them would explain it pretty well. However if you asked the same group to actually motivate themselves to exercise, the outcome would be much different.

So why is it, that even though the whole group wanted to exercise, only a minority would manage to start and stick with it? While the answer to this and other similar questions are complex, one thing we do know, is that Motivational Interviewing (MI) is one method fitness professionals can use to help clients bridge the gap between knowing and doing.

Far from the typical motivational approach where the professional does all of the work, MI aims to return responsibility to the client by enhancing self-efficacy and personal control for behaviour

It’s about human beings not human bodies John Polley (JP) Here’s another full day workshop from Fitex favourite JP, with thought provoking content, enjoyable practical engagement and strategies you can instantly apply in your business, and your life, the very next day.

JP wants to share some stunning information about the effects of exercise on the brain and emotions, but equally how our mental or emotional worlds influence our physical outcomes.

“We are one system...” says JP, “not lots of separate systems”.

Brain influences body, emotions influence everything and what’s happening in our bodies influence the other two”.

Given this fact, having an understanding of what JP calls the 3 human dimensions is incredibly useful. However, the outcome JP passionately wants for all attendees, is to actively engage and coach the whole human. Create positive change mentally, emotionally and physically. Create movement sessions that may be geared towards everything that is familiar to you (strength, cardio, mobility, play), but that tick all boxes of the human being. As the saying goes, you can’t have motion, without e-motion.

You’ll leave with great information, but you’ll know how to apply it in your sessions AND will have practised your new skills before the day is done.

We will discover what happens at the unconscious level when information is taken in and how we and our client›s filter information, and, thus deem it safe or a threat. we will then dive into how to change the words we use and give you applicable language changes to improve client outcomes.

Join Shari for a session with a difference, where participants can get a workout without having to leave their chairs. Most activities will be completely seated, and those that involve standing will be supported and have seated options.

An introduction to Motivational Interviewing (MI) for fitness professionals If you asked a group of 100 exercise hopefuls to explain the term, ‘motivation to exercise’, I’m sure most of them would explain it pretty well. However if you asked the same group to actually motivate themselves to exercise, the outcome would be much different.

So why is it, that even though the whole group wanted to exercise, only a minority would manage to start and stick with it? While the answer to this and other similar questions are complex, one thing we do know, is that Motivational Interviewing (MI) is one method fitness professionals can use to help clients bridge the gap between knowing and doing.

Far from the typical motivational approach where the professional does all of the work, MI aims to return responsibility to the client by enhancing self-efficacy and personal control for behaviour change. The use of an interactive, empathic listening style increases motivation and confidence, and allows clients to safely explore the discrepancy between personal goals and current health behaviours (a powerful way to develop long lasting intrinsic motivation).

In this talk we will first explore what MI is, and, how it can boost your client’s motivation to make health related changes, and then learn about several key MI strategies and techniques that you can use with clients to enhance change talk. From here we will explore a selection of techniques that can be used to effectively respond to, and reframe negative or self-defeating client statements.

Trauma informed personal training (pt 2) Building on the previous session we will look at some specific exercises and movement practices that you can use with your clients who have experienced trauma. This method – Trauma Release Exercise (TRE) is a researched method for individual-led management of physical trauma therapy, enabling your clients to learn practical skills to help in their recovery.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: • We will start by creating a safe space in which to help clients learn and then experience TRE – this is a vital skill when working with people who have experienced trauma and is about much more than creating a welcoming environment.

• We will then practice a number of the specific movements and exercises that enable the body to re-learn the innate trauma release mechanism that people often mistake as the visible representation of fear.

• If you have an interest in working with clients who have experienced trauma this session will provide you with some practical teaching that you can share with your clients and empower them to look at alternative ways of managing their trauma recovery.

Play has entered the exercise profession in recent years thanks to trailblazers featured regularly here at Fitex. One of these is JP, and he wants to show you another aspect to this hugely versatile exercise modality - play for mobility.

80% of adults suffer from low back pain, and many people are effected by aches and pains that prevent them from functioning optimally. A high percentage of this is caused by the muscle imbalances, instability and a lack of mobility that causes compensation in movement. Much of what our clients do in everyday life and certainly a great deal of they do in our exercise programs, requires flexibility, stability, strength and control.

In this very practical and of course, playful, session, you will play yourself to more freedom of movement. JP will show you his favourite mobility games and explain why they are creating mobility, rather than flexibility, and the difference between the two.

Whilst dumbbells are a great workout tool, there are so many options available these days which range from the latest trendy sporting equipment to things you can find in your own home.

There will be no designer equipment here as we explore a workout using everything from buckets to balloons.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: • To develop a toolkit of exercises using non-traditional equipment including many things you’d find around the house or in your local variety store.

• To utilise a range of equipment to provide a varied and entertaining workout that encompasses strength, cardio, balance and coordination, flexibility and fun.

• To remind people that you don’t need to spend huge amounts of money on the latest equipment in order to mix your sessions up and give your participants a new challenge.

• To explore ways to tailor sessions using non-traditional equipment to suit special populations such as children, older adults and people with disabilities.

• To provide a range of solo, partnered and group exercises using items such as balloons, scarves, balls, bean bags, clothes pegs and newspaper.

• To try and encourage fitness professionals to be more creative with their choice of equipment and exercise prescription, and to look at how you can easily ‘convert’ more traditional exercises to something different using non-traditional equipment.

Sometimes we are taken by surprise with participants who have medical conditions, injuries or other physical challenges that influence their ability to participate in our classes. From pregnancy to Parkinson’s, from osteoarthritis to autism spectrum you will be exposed to an amazing variety of individuals with special needs who will benefit from exercise. The question is: what are you going to do when they turn up to your class? Join Mark in this session that is geared toward aqua instructors (but can be applied to all exercise formats) as he explores five key strategies you can use to ensure all participants are included safely and effectively.

Inclusion, it’s for Everyone This session will discuss disability, how it affects the community, our fitness centres, and how we can all make simple changes to be inclusive. Carol and Caitlin will share their personal real-life story, and how Caitlin has overcome barriers and is breaking down stereotypes. You will be touched by her courage and inspired to make change. We will explore how we can cater for people with a disability in our fitness centres, both as participants and employees.

20% of our population has a disability that is too many people for us to ignore.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: To have a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges of people with disability face on a daily basis. Walk away feeling confident to have conversations with people and not to be afraid of language or causing offence.

• Caitlin will demonstrate how her role in working in the YMCA can have a positive effect on the role people with a disability have in society, and invoke thought on how we can employ more inclusively in our industry.

We know the benefits of fitness for the community, we know why it’s important to train our heart, lungs, make our bones and muscles strong this applies to everyone! With 20% of our population experiencing a disability how do we structure classes for all? This session will give you the tools and confidence to run a group class for people with an intellectual disability. You will learn lots of ideas to make a class fun and get maximum engagement, lots of options and ways to change things around if something isn’t going to plan.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Leave this session confident to run a class for adults or children with an intellectual disability.

• Come away feeling confident you have skills to handle difficult behavior and know how to make adaptations to your class plan to go with the flow.

• Learn a new way of thinking about success and what makes a successful class .

• You will leave with a toolbox of ideas, games that you can use for other class types as well.

We love our industry. We all believe strongly that exercise is great for us. And mostly it is. Movement is a gift. Eating healthily and exercising regularly are cornerstones of the wellbeing industry.

However there is an alarming rise in the number of people suffering from orthorexia (the term for a condition that includes symptoms of obsessive behaviour in pursuit of a healthy diet), compulsive over exercising and for women associated problems of amenorrhea (missing periods).

Where are our responsibilities as health and fitness professionals?

Suddenly the line between physical health and mental health gets a bit blurry.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: • This session will be co-presented and we will both share personal experiences of where we have been negatively affected by our love of exercise. We have one b ody that needs to last us a long and well-lived lifetime and as health and fitness professionals we have a responsibility to ensure that we are helping our clients live their best, healthiest lives.

• You’ll leave this session with a greater understanding of the conditions of orthorexia, extreme dieting, compulsive over exercising, restrictive eating and amenorrhea. You’ll learn skills and strategies for engaging clients in meaningful and supportive ways to ensure they are not at risk. And where necessary, understand how and when to refer when the situation is outside of your scope of practice.

Understanding Non Medical Transition Pathways

Alcohol Addiction is a huge problem all around the world. Many people who drink alcohol want to transform their lives by quitting drinking, fixing their chronic pain and losing weight. They start eating healthy, going to a physio and/or getting a gym membership.

Unfortunately, some can find doing this isn’t as easy as they think, resulting in giving up, going back to drinking and feeling defeated. You and your business might be catching these people at a time when they are highly motivated and ready to make a significant change in their lives. In this session, learn from Addiction Coach, Zay Canters, about how you can understand more about your clients who may be addicted to alcohol or other substances.

Bowie Stover is a Non Binary fitness coach. They have spent 6 years exploring non medical transition pathways on their journey to self discovery.
