Message from CE of Fitness New Zealand Welcome to the second year of FitEx (or the seventh year delivering a world class national conference).

Following on from the success of our launch of the new FitEx brand in 2012, we will be continuing with many of the changes from last year, as well as introducing several new elements into this years event. Many of these have been based on feedback received from attendees, and presenters – collectively we have over 5,000 pieces of feedback on 2012 alone!

The key changes for 2013 include: • Two and three day options (two days = FitEx, three days = FitEx + pre-conference event) • Gold Pass now includes three day option PLUS awards ticket, PLUS PT breakfast • Option of Group Exercise only sessions at a super low rate • More time slots (so less sessions per timeslot). Our biggest ‘complaint’ was too many great sessions at the same time We will also be continuing many of the elements introduced in 2012, such as: • PT breakfast on Sunday morning • Welcome events on Friday night (5pm-7pm) – meet and network with fellow attendees and presenters

Extended accommodation options: We have also negotiated an extension to the accommodation, meaning in 2013 we can host a further 100 people at the AUT student villages (both onsite and at the AUT town campus). Good news is this is still heavily subsidised, and only $29 a night.

As the awards are co-timed with FitEx, we have also been working with the awards organizers to explore options of more people attending and viewing the awards, without the cost of a dinner ticket and/or hiring/buying a suit/dress for the night (a barrier to some). The great news is that, for 2013, there will be TWO options to attend the awards - (1) a traditional dinner ticket and (2) a ‘drinks and nibbles’ option. Both options allow attendees at the event to view the award ceremony, with the key difference being that the drinks and nibbles option provides for welcome drinks and canapés during the evening (dress code smart casual), where as the dinner ticket is a full three course sit down dinner (dress code is still black tie). Both options also provide access to the new after awards party – with a dance floor and bar going late into the night! For more details on both the awards ceremony, and entering the awards, see page 11.

As with all such events, those that attend and take part get the most out of it – so plan your final weekend for November now – grab a cheap flight, rent a car, block out the weekend now, and book online ASAP (so you get the best rates!). Use FitEx and the awards to collectively provide the opportunity to up-skill, network with your peers, and above all celebrate the awesome work that our industry does to improving the lives of New Zealanders.

The conference is targeted at exercise and wellness professionals, managers and sales staff passionate about furthering their knowledge. So if you are a personal trainer, gym instructor,group exercise instructor, salesperson or club owner/manager, this event is for you!

The conference is eligible for 20 CPD Points from REPs, pre-conference events earn additional CPD Points.

Bring business cards so you can share these with other trainers, presenters or any other people you would be keen to keep in touch with. This is THE best networking opportunity of the year and we encourage you to take full advantage of this!

Session times and breaks Sessions range from 45 to 90 minutes in duration (check session schedule for details), with breaks between sessions of 15 minutes, longer for lunch. Saturday sessions finish earlier to allow those going to Fitness Industry Awards to attend.

How the sessions work The conference is held over two days (23rd / 24th November), involving over 85 sessions! With up to nine sessions running at any given time - you are able to pick and choose your sessions on the day.

There is also a series of one day pre-conference workshops on Friday 22nd November.

Want to learn how to deliver a safe Pilates exercise program that is tailored to your client to help keep them fit and healthy pre and post pregnancy?

This one day course will give you practical and proven tips and strategies for effective teaching, build teaching confidence in a highly supportive environment. The course will cover Pilates principles, stages of pregnancy and it will guide you through a repertoire of exercises and how to apply these exercises for each trimester.

In the Fitness Industry there is still much confusion about our roles and where certain exercises fit into the programs we deliver daily.

Our clients seem to have more injuries, compensations, discomfort than ever before so where/how do you give them what they need but still make the program feel and look progressive? Most importantly how do you empower them to perform when you aren’t around?

There are many ways to assess/appraise movement and prescribe exercises. Adam and Ian have discovered that the fields of Physiotherapy and Fitness are converging through science, discovery and interaction amongst likeminded thinkers. Though they come from different backgrounds their approach to clients with injuries is remarkably similar. Most importantly they understand that lifelong learning and keeping an open mind is vital in this field.

In this session, we take many of the modern functional tools and protocols that we already have in our kit-bags as modern fitness professionals,

marry those with vital clinical education and adapt them for the PN client to create programming that not only has the WOW factor but GET’S RESULTS THAT MEAN HAPPY CLIENTS & REFERRALS! Ultimately, this client population is far too numerous, relevant and in need of our help for any modern Trainer to ignore or not serve with depth and passion. Creating a programme within your business that is bespoke for their needs is the probably one of the smartest moves you could make and I’ll show you how much fun you can have in the process.

Pre-Conference Workshops Friday 22nd November The over 65 age group is the fastest growing demographic in New Zealand.

But are we ready as a nation and as an industry to provide the exercise and activity options this group needs and wants as they age?

The goal of the inaugural Ageing Symposium at FitEx 2013 is to share information and stimulate collaborative thinking among the fitness industry fraternity and other influential agencies so that we can provide top quality instructors, programmes and classes that allow safe, effective and enjoyable exercise experiences for our older adults currently and into the future.

Date: Friday 22nd November Time: 12.30-4pm.

REPs CPD Points: 2.5 We will kick off the afternoon with two of New Zealand’s eminent academics; Dr Grant Schofield and Professor Bevan Grant.

Their presentations will be on the topical subjects of nutrition, ageing and the brain and “Being active in later life: It’s not as easy as you think!” respectively.

The second part of the afternoon will involve forum discussions and several short (TED talk like) presentations on a variety of relevant topics such as funding opportunities, best practise guidelines and other useful information on how to better provide for this age group.

If you are an instructor of older adults (or aspire to be) you won’t want to miss this new addition to what is already the country’s leading exercise and wellness conference.

Professor Bevan Grant is a member of the Faculty of Education at Waikato University in the Department of Sport and Leisure Studies of which he was the founding Director in 1993. He holds teaching and research positions with a focus on the experience of older adults, physical activity and well-being, and also in research, policy and community initiatives in the context of ageing and physical activity. He is on the Board of Hamilton Age Concern, the Board of Waikato Regional Sports Trust, the committee for the Waikato Branch of NZ Gerontology Association, a member of the NZ Nutrition Foundation ‘Older Persons Working Group’, on the Accreditation Board of NZ Recreation Association and a life member of Physical Education NZ.

Dr Grant Schofield is Professor of Public Health at AUT University, with research and teaching interests in wellbeing and chronic disease prevention. He is the Director of the Centre for Human Potential, based at the AUT Millenium Campus. He holds a PhD in behavioural psychology and has published over 200 papers. Dr Schofield is the chair of the Agencies for Nutrition Action Scientific Committee, he is a member of the Health Research Council’s Public Health committee of New Zealand and consultant to the World Health Organisation.He has a lifelong passion for moving, including competing as a professional triathlete in over 20 Ironman events including the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon World Championships in 1995 and 1997.

Low price accommodation can be found at www.wotif.com. Backpacker accommodation is available from as little as $30 a night, with hotel and motel acommodation from $90 per room (up to 2 people) a night.

Subway sell a range of items that will meet most peoples dietary requirements. They also sell coffee and drinks.

Can’t go without your regular exercise fix? You can use the AUT gym located in AH block. Note: the gym hours are Saturday 8am - 5pm & Sunday 10 - 2pm but may be closed at times for exclusive use of a FitEx session.

Flying from Wellington? AirNZ operates a nightly Wellington to Auckland service for $29 each way. Fly in Thursday or Friday and leave on Sunday. Book early as there is only one flight with tickets this price each night!

Location The conference is being held in Auckland at AUT’s North Shore campus on Akoranga Drive. A detailed map will be made available electronically to all attendees prior to the event.

Onsite facilities Changing Rooms include showers and allow you to change between active sessions and lectures. They are located in AH block.

Practical sessions Some sessions will require physical activity so don’t forget to pack clothes you can move about in. If you are unable (or chose not) to take part in any practical session you are still welcome to observe.

Transportation: Parking: There is parking available at the AUT. Please respect any signs indicating reserved spaces, disability spaces, and most importantly if you are parking in a PAY and DISPLAY area, please observe operating hours and pay the appropriate parking fee.

Public Transport from the airport: The airbus runs approximately every 15 mins and is $16 one way or $26 return. This runs to Queen St (a short walk from Britomart transport centre) where you can connect to the Northern Express (Britomart To Albany) Bus to Akoranga Station for $3.40 then walk via the bridge to the AUT Campus.

Rental Cars: Use rate code “metro” when booking with Thrifty, they offer a metro car at $45 a day with no airport fee with 100 km included per day. This is a great offer, normally airport fees alone range from $20-$40 a day on top of the daily rental rates. Other options available online are: www.thrifty.co.nz, www.avis.co.nz, www.budget.co.nz, www.hertz.co.nz, www.europcar.co.nz.

Shuttles from the airport: Shuttles operate 24 hours a day. They have a range of prices but are generally cheaper if there are 2 or more people going in the same direction. Supershuttle 0800 748 885 or 09 522 5100 Taxis: We do not recommend the use of taxis. It’s usually a expensive fare from the airport even on a day with no traffic. One of our presenters caught a taxi in the past and got a $200+ bill! Use taxis with extreme caution and try for a set rate if you can negotiate one with the driver.

We’re paperless (well almost): FitnessNZ operate an online handouts library. You will be given a password so you can download session notes from the internet in the weeks before the conference.

This will also give you the ability to access notes after the event should you change the sessions which you were planning on attending over the weekend. You will also receive an electronic pdf of other information you need to know about the conference and handy tips (including shuttle contact details, taxi numbers, local supermarkets, where to find food and coffee as well as all the information about the conference).

For New Zealand, two salient features remain juxtaposed against the demographic data of a mainly female and ageing society. Firstly, the knowledge that lifestyle diseases such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, type 2 diabetes, menopause-related obesity as well as depression are on the rise in women (all ethnicities) between the ages of fifty and sixty (MOH, 2012). Low carb, high fat & ketogenic diets – Sun 1.15-2.15pm Caryn is a New Zealand Registered Dietitian and an accredited sports nutritionist with 16 years of consulting experience in the health / nutrition industry and 12 years experience in academia. In her clinical practice, Caryn consults with a variety of clients, including the general population, recreational sports people and elite athletes involved with the NZ Academy of Sport. In academia, she is a senior lecturer at AUT University where she is involved with teaching and research in the areas of sport nutrition and public health nutrition. She has recently completed her PhD which focused on sustained weight loss.

He particularly enjoys the challenge of helping injured clients return to high performance. Dave was a senior lecturer in Exercise Rehabilitation and Resistance Training in Exercise Rehabilitation for 10 years and completed a Masters degree in Physical Education researching explosive training techniques. Stephanie has written two books about exercise, one for primary school teachers and the other is an “AT Home” exercise guide.

Suzanne is an accredited exercise physiologist who works with a wide range clients in both clinical and gym environments. She is also a Senior Presenter and NSW/ACT Online Learning Coordinator at the Australian Institute of Fitness in NSW and is the founder of Absolute Conditioning, a personal training business that specialises in corporate health, special populations and athletic strength and conditioning. Suzanne is currently studying for her Masters in Exercise Science (Rehabilitation).

Wendy Sweet

Female Baby Boomers – Sunday 9.00 - 10.30am Psychology and physiology of weight loss – Sunday 10.45am-12.15pm In 2009, Wendy Sweet was awarded the FitnessNZ Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Fitness Industry. This was an acknowledgement of her 30 years in the fitness industry. Today Wendy continues to contribute to the NZ fitness industry as a lecturer at Waikato University and a consultant.

She has recently commenced a PhD whereby her research interest will be focussed on the emerging baby boomer market and their experiences with Personal Trainers. She continues to be passionate about educating those working in the fitness industry and looks forward to meeting you at FitEx

Important Information: How to save money

2013 Fitness Industry Awards

• The Gold Pass gives you the best value for money. It allows access to all three days of the event (one pre-conference event and two day FitEx Conference), plus PT Breakfast (Sunday 7.30am) and a ticket to the Awards drinks/nibbles (Saturday evening).

• SPECIAL RATE for Group Exercise Instructors – from as low as $199. Gives access only to the Group Exercise sessions during the 2 day FitEx event, plus the Keynote and Welcome event on Friday evening.

• Book early (Before 1 October 2013) and save $150 with the Earlybird Rate • Save $200 if you are REPs registered or a FitnessNZ member • Savings can be combined, meaning a total saving of $350 is possible (on either the three day Gold Pass or the two day FitEx conference)

There are now two options for attending the Fitness Industry Awards in 2013 • Dinner Ticket (suggested if entering an award) includes 3 course meal from $129 • Drink/Nibbles Ticket: arrival drink, and canopes $49 Both provide viewing of the awards, a drink on arrival with a cash bar there after and access to the social event after the event.

General Conference Terms and Conditions: • Transfers available (subject to conditions) • Pre-conference events are subject to minimum numbers, if cancelled you will receive a refund for the preconference portion.

• Accommodation will be provided (if requested) either at the Akoranga Student Village (onsite) or at the AUT City Accommodation (If you are at the AUT City Accommodation shuttle transfer provided).

We highly recommend if you are entering the awards that you attend the dinner, as there is no way to collect an award from the Drink/Nibble area.

Dress code dinner: Men: Black Tie (minimum shirt and tie with trousers and dress shoes).

Women: Cocktail, Long dress, or dressy evening separates Dress code drinks/nibbles: Men: Smart casual (Collared shirt, tie optional) No Track pants, shorts or ripped jeans (even if they are designer!)
