A central London graduation ceremony All our students graduate in London and the ceremony is typically attended by the Deputy Vice Chancellor and the Vice Chancellor from the University of Plymouth and guest speakers to celebrate their outstanding achievements. Although the location may vary, the graduation ceremony is typically held at the Barbican Centre. Acknowledged as one of the country’s finest auditoriums, the Barbican Centre can seat close to 2,000 people. A post-ceremony reception is held near to the graduation hall.

Teaching to your strengths At GSM London we understand that every student is different and a one-size-fits-all approach isn’t always appropriate. That’s why we blend traditional, lecture-based teaching with innovative methods such as strengths-based learning and practical projects to ensure your studies are as engaging, relevant and rewarding as possible.

It’s this distinctive approach that has earned GSM London a commendation by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA): the independent body entrusted with monitoring and advising on standards and quality in UK higher education.*

Strengths-based learning Our strengths-based approach to learning identifies the things you’re good at and then helps you figure out how to use them to get the most out of your studies. For example, if you’re naturally analytical, we can help you find study methods that suit this particular quality.

Personal tutoring As part of our Strengths-based approach, students are assigned, or can access, a Personal Tutor who provides advice and support — both academic and pastoral — throughout your time at GSM London. They’ll meet with you regularly in group sessions and offer meetings on a oneto-one basis, encouraging you to reflect on your Strengths and helping you develop into a confident and independent learner.

Active learning In contrast to the traditional ‘listen, memorise and repeat’ approach to teaching, many of our programmes incorporate active learning methods. Examples of active learning range from role play exercises to team-based projects such as making a video or creating a brochure. This active approach to learning is not only highly engaging but also helps you develop valuable employability skills, and become more self-assured in everything you do.

Practical projects Today’s employers want people who understand how to apply business theories and principles to real-life situations. So we make practical, hands-on projects an integral part of the learning experience to ensure you’re ready for the workplace.

Practical projects All undergraduate degrees except for Economics and Law incorporate practical, work-based projects, enabling you to apply your academic knowledge in a live setting.

Preparing you for the job market Our careers team offers a range of services to help prepare you for the increasingly competitive job market. These include oneto-one careers guidance, CV preparation, application review, skills and careers workshops, and practice interviews.

Seminars, workshops and events Throughout the year we run seminars and workshops where guest speakers from business and industry talk about career opportunities and provide insights into the corporate world. Previous speakers have represented organisations such as BP, IBM, National Grid, British Gas and Enterprise Rent-a-Car. Our students also enjoy access to jobs fairs, careers weeks and other events where they can research careers and network with employers and industry experts.

Build your own business Entrepreneurship and GSM London go hand in hand: many of our students plan to start their own businesses, and some already have.

Formation Zone Devised by our partners at the University of Plymouth, the Formation Zone business incubator is a key resource for entrepreneurs at GSM London. It’s an award-winning facility for new business start-ups and existing businesses that are looking for advice, information, support, contacts, workspace and more.

Formation Zone also offers a great opportunity for networking and collaboration with like-minded entrepreneurs from both the GSM London student body and the wider business community.

Meet our faculty Just like our students, the academic staff at GSM London come from diverse backgrounds and with that, they bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the classroom.

Many have spent years in industry, others are involved in leading-edge academic research, and some offer extensive experience in both areas. What they all share is a passion for education and a determination to ensure that every student fulfils their potential, in the classroom and beyond.

Key to this is our progressive, inclusive and highly supportive approach to teaching. We understand that every student has different needs and abilities, so we complement traditional lecture-based learning with an innovative strengths-based approach.

This identifies what students are naturally good at and builds on these skills to create confident learners.

What’s more, we support this strengths-based philosophy with active learning methods: hands-on exercises and collaborative teambased tasks that engage and inspire our

students in a way that more formal teaching methods may not.

We also offer our Foundation Year programme for students who perhaps don’t have academic qualifications or have been away from education for some time. This enables them to develop the study skills needed to embark on a degree programme with total confidence.

Foundation Year Not everyone has the qualifications or self-belief needed to jump straight into degree level study. So we offer extended degree programmes featuring an integrated Foundation Year to help you develop the academic skills and confidence you’ll need to succeed on your learning journey.

The Foundation Year enabled me to get on a degree without having to retake my college qualifications.

Is the Foundation Year for me?

If you’re returning to study to improve your job prospects, coming back to learning after several years working or child-raising, haven’t formally completed your education, or don’t have any experience of academic study but hold work experience, then the Foundation Year is for you.

What will I learn?

The Foundation Year focuses on developing your numeracy, computer skills and English: the core skills you’ll need to succeed on your degree programme. You’ll also get to choose two elective modules, giving you a taste of two different degree subjects. It’s a great chance to find out what really interests you before committing to a particular degree programme.

How will this help me achieve my degree?

The Foundation Year route integrates Level 3 study – equivalent to A Levels, BTECs and access courses – with a university degree.

Passing the Foundation Year proves that you have acquired the skills and knowledge needed to begin your degree and will enable you to continue expanding those skills on the programme of your choice.

Make a Flying Start Worried that your study skills are a bit rusty? Flying Start is a short series of free classes designed to build your confidence in numeracy, computer skills and English before your Foundation Year starts. So you can hit the ground running when it does.

Two-year degrees Are you ambitious and determined to succeed? Are you keen to get out there and start making your mark on the world as quickly as possible?

If so, an accelerated two-year degree could be your ideal option.

Why study a two-year degree?

A two-year degree covers all the same modules as the three-year programme and offers exactly the same level of support — you just complete it in a shorter period of time. So you can start earning and progressing your career that much sooner.

What’s more, you’ll make a saving of £6,000* compared to a traditional three-year degree.

How is it structured?

You’ll have three semesters a year, with short breaks in between, so it’s quite an intensive option. But while you may not get a long summer break, you will graduate and enter the workplace a year earlier than students on three-year degree programmes.

Tuition fees for a two-year degree are typically £8,000* per year — £6,000 can be covered by a student loan and you’ll need to top-up the remaining £2,000.

What if I don’t have formal qualifications?

No problem, our integrated Foundation Year programme will help you develop the academic skills and self-belief needed to study a two-year degree.

Before your Foundation Year begins you can also benefit from our free Flying Start classes to build your confidence in numeracy, computer skills and English. * F ees quoted are for UK and EU students. Delivered in London - the international financial centre – this degree offers exemptions from the Association of Certified Accountants (ACCA) and Chartered Institute of Management Accounting (CIMA). You will benefit from live projects, learning through practice and lecturers who are practitioners in industry: • Use of industry leading software including FT.com and Reuters • Business games, simulation trading and share buying will be incorporated into the programme where possible • Optional field trips to experience the stock exchange, to learn about investment bonds and to meet top accountancy and finance firms • Live project of your choice, where possible, including an Islamic banking option • Option to choose a Consultancy project, working with real businesses through our ‘Formation Zone’

Where will the degree take me?

As well as providing a route into financial professions, this Accounting and Finance degree will help you develop skills that can be utilised in a range of sectors. You can attain jobs in law, journalism, advertising, marketing, sales and IT. Semester 1 Academic Skills for Accountants This module serves as an introduction to the core skills required of students embarking on undergraduate studies in accounting and finance.

Corporate and Business Law This module provides students with an understanding of law in a business context. It provides an introduction to the English legal system and considers the influence of European law.

IT Applications for Management Accounting This module is designed to offer a basic understanding of Microsoft Excel and its application to management accounting.

Semester 4 Financial Management This module is designed to offer students an understanding of the principles of financial management which provides the basis for growth and financial success.

Financial Accounting 1 This module is designed to offer a sound introduction to financial accounting.

Management Accounting 1 This module introduces management accounting in a business context.

Semester 2 Professional Skills for Accountants This module serves as an introduction to the professional skills required of students embarking on undergraduate studies.

IT Applications for Financial Accounting This module is designed to offer a basic understanding of the accounts preparation process from source documents to final accounts.

Financial Accounting 2 This module is designed to build on the knowledge acquired in the first part of the Financial Accounting module.

Management Accounting 2 This module introduces the basis for budgeting, cost evaluation and performance which is essential for the development of more advanced management accounting.

Semester 3 Employability Skills This module enables students to develop the knowledge and apply professional skills to achieve employability outcomes.

Financial Accounting and Reporting This module builds on the earlier Financial Accounting module to deepen students’ technical knowledge of financial accounting within an international standards framework.

Principles of Taxation This module considers an introduction to income tax; value added tax; corporation tax and capital gains tax of individuals and businesses.

Choose one of the following electives: Management Accounting and Performance Management Evaluation and Reflection (Work Based/ Related Learning) Semester 5 Accounting and Finance for the Business Environment This module develops students’ knowledge and skills in strategic decision making in a real world context.

International Financial Reporting This module builds on the earlier Financial Accounting and Reporting module. Students will analyse consolidated accounting and the reporting of complex transactions and events.

What will I learn?

Semester 1 Academic Skills This module serves as an introduction to the core academic skills required of students embarking on undergraduate studies.

Management and Organisations This module introduces and explains the main business functions and considers the contribution made by theories to the practice of management.

There are two types of financial loans available to most UK and EU nationals

1 A tuition fee loan covers up to £6,000 per year of your programme fees. Please note, if you choose to study a 2-year fulltime accelerated degree and are eligible for SLC funding, SLC will only fund a maximum of £6,000 per year. You will be liable for the top-up fees.

A student maintenance loan helps you with your living costs (the amount given will depend on family circumstances) – this does need to be paid back in the same way as the tuition fee loan.

Repaying

your loan

1 You do not start paying back your tuition fee and maintenance loan while you are studying.

2 You only have to pay back your student loan when you start earning a certain amount. Currently, once your income is over £25,000 per year, 9% of your earnings over £25,000 will go towards the student loan.
