The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI), through the National Plant Quarantine Services Division (NPQSD), commenced exports of Fresh ‘Hass’ Avocados with a ceremonial send-off at the KTC Port Tibungco, Davao City on September 30, 2023. The initial shipment of 3,040 boxes, with an estimated value of US$ 48,433, is expected to arrive in Pyongtaek Port, South Korea on October 8, 2023. It was on September 25, 2009, when the Philippines, through the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI), officially expressed its intent to export fresh Hass avocado fruits to Korea, responding to the request of Dole Philippines. The Department of Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) of the Republic of Korea and DA-BPI have reached a historic agreement on June 19, 2023 and came into effect as of September 8, 2023. The significant market access achievement was made possible through the diligent efforts of the DA-BPI, headed by Director Gerald Glenn Panganiban, and the Philippine Agriculture Office in Seoul.
AGRI NEWS PH Director Panganiban played an instrumental role in expediting the market access request by incorporating this agenda during the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), attended by several member countries, including the top management of APQA. This marks the beginning of a fruitful trade relationship between the two nations as the people of South Korea can finally taste the creamy and nutrient-rich Hass avocados from the Philippines.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. remains committed to the acceleration of agricultural development by opening the country’s doors to Philippine fruit exports. Under his leadership, the Philippines is continuously making progress in creating opportunities in the global market and solidifying its capability to trade top-quality agricultural products.

As part of its continuous effort to promote the agri-food products of the Philippines in the international arena, the DA, through the Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service (AMAS), participated in one of the largest agricultural trade shows in the Middle East, the Agra ME 2023, which happened on October 9–10, 2023, at the World Trade Center in Dubai.
In addition, the said exhibition was also strategic, as based on recent data from Key Global Statistics (UAE) (2023), Filipinos have a significant presence in the UAE, and therefore there is an increase in demand for PH food products. It accounted for almost 6.1% of the UAE’s total population, which is approximately 700,000 individuals. Among them, around 450,000 Filipinos reside in Dubai alone, representing roughly 21.3% of the emirate’s total population. The Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to the UAE, Alfonso Ferdinand A. Ver, and Consul General, Renato Duenas Jr. visited the DA pavilion. “We are glad that after so many years, we got the opportunity to showcase the Philippine agri-products here in Agra ME in the UAE, as there are many Filipinos’ staying here,” Ambassador Ver said.
As the only pavilion that offers food products during Agra ME 2023, the DA showcased fresh fruits (mango, pineapple, and banana), processed food products (fruit juices and jams, vanilla, banana chips, and dried seafood), and coco coir. The opening of Agra ME 2023 was also attended by His Excellency Ali Al Jassim, Chairman of Emirates Green Building Council.

Meeting with UPLB-BIOTECH Department of Agriculture (DA) Senior Undersecretary Domingo F. Panganiban and the officials of the University of the Philippines Los Baños – National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (UPLB-BIOTECH) The meeting aims to further strengthen the partnership of two institute and explore possible collaboration with the goal of enhancing the research endeavors of UPLB-BIOTECH. The National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH) is recognized as the first premier national institute on molecular biology and biotechnology within the Philippines and Southeast Asia.
AGRI NEWS PH
It operates as the research and development unit of UP Los Baños, collaborating with various departments and disciplines in engineering, chemistry and applied microbiology to conduct research, training and extension in biotechnology.
During the meeting, Director Tambalo discussed current products and projects of the institution. The official also sought support for scaling up the production of Bio N fertilizer, a technology developed by UPLB-BIOTECH, which could significantly aid the agricultural sector in addressing shortages and soaring prices of fertilizer.
Bio N is a microbial based fertilizer made of microorganisms (bacteria) isolated from the roots of talahib (Saccharum spontaneum). This fertilizer can boost crop yields for rice, corn, and vegetables while preserving soil health. Additionally, it promotes plant health and makes plants green, even in drought conditions and in the presence of pests, reducing the incidence of rice tungro and corn earworm infestations.
