Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. has created three (3) teams to prepare and finalize the feasibility studies of priority infrastructure projects of the Department of Agriculture (DA) that will boost food production, particularly of rice and corn.
Sec. Tiu Laurel said the teams will have to ensure the project documents are compliant with the requirements of the DA-wide project clearing house system and the National Economic and Development Authority-Investment Coordination Committee.
The agri chief designated Undersecretary for Special Concerns and for Official Development Assistance Jerome Oliveros as a chairperson across all three project-preparation teams which would draft the framework and plans for the proposed post-harvest program for rice and corn, the solar-powered cold storages, and proposed solar-powered irrigation systems. sy
instruction to the team preparing the As a special in solar-powered irrigation system project, the agri chief stressed that they should ensure consistency on the proposed sites in the database of the National Irrigation Administration and with Bureau of Soil and Water Management irrigation masterplan.
Undersecretary for Operations Roger Navarro will be Oliveros’ co-chairman for the team that will prepare the feasibility study on the post-harvest program for rice and corn while Undersecretary for High Value Crops Cheryl Marie Natividad-Caballero will be the co-chairperson of the team in-charge of the proposed solar-powered irrigation system project. Meanwhile, the Department’s spokesperson and Assistant th Secretary Arnel de Mesa will be the vice chairman of the team that will prepare the solar-powered cold storage project.

The Department of Agriculture is rolling out several programs to entice more young FilipInos go into agriculture. At the send off of 23 scholars who are leaving for the “Young Filipino Farm Leaders Training in Japan,” Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. said the DA is providing resources to allow more young Filipinos to participate in international exchange programs. The goal is to introduce them to new technologies and practices that they will bring back to help modernize Philippine agriculture. “The “T Agricultural Training Institute’s Young Filipino Farm Leaders Training Program in Japan underscores the Department’s continuing commitment to advance the skills of our young farmers and showcase their abilities, values, and competencies in the international arena,” said Tiu Laurel, whose skills were sharpened during the many overseas trainings his father sent him to, including Japan, when he was just 17. A lingering concern on the future of Philippine agriculture is the advanced age of farmers, which average in the mid-50s, and the seeming reluctance of younger Filipinos to till the land or go into fishing.
