The Power of Yoga, Sixfold STORY BY MEGAN FORD

The beauty of yoga is that you don’t have to be an expert to benefit from it. At YogaSix, there is a class for everyone, with six core courses offering a specific focus and different body benefits in each. Yoga is a complete mind and body experience that offers physical benefits on the mat and mental benefits beyond the mat. “It’s a communal experience,” Amy Smith Sewell, owner of YogaSix, says. Sewell has simple advice for first-time yoga goers, “Just show up. Then keep coming.” She goes on to say it’s about consistency. “If there’s a day you aren’t feeling your best or feel like not being seen, those are the most important days to show up.” After seeing success in Chisolm Creek, YogaSix recently expanded into the Nichols Hills area. As you enter the studio, you’ll notice the minimalistic style with white walls and simple flooring and lighting. The team wanted to create an inviting space that “screams self-care.” To promote inclusivity and not limit the studio to members only, they offer one-time visits, class packs, and unlimited classes. Before opening the studio, Sewell knew she wanted to do something rewarding to build a sense of community. She liked the concept of yoga being available for all and wanted to create a studio that isn’t intimidating with the traditional linear aspect of chanting and Sanskrit words. They take more of a tantric perspective that you’re perfect the way you are. “In each moment in liberation, you have connectedness and can align with yourself,” Sewell states. Katie Kanak, a lead teacher, says, “The teachers are offered free yogaalliance monthly certified training and are required to hit quarterly goals.” She feels that they have created an environment where their students feel their teachers’ evolution. The long-term vision is to keep building a community atmosphere with excellent programs and opportunities and continue to change lives with the power of the yoga they all practice in their daily lives. “It’s a simple plan, just be there to allow people to find an hour of calm in their week to be in their body on their mat and breathe,” Kanak says. > Join the YogaSix community by signing up online at www.yogasix.com/location/nichols-hills

HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT IN EACH COURSE: 101:

Prepare to slow down and hone in on the foundation and refinement of alignment at a nice, cozy temperature of 80 or 85 degrees.

SLOW FLOW:

Although this one is a slow burn, it’s by no means easy. It starts as a mindful sequencing or flow and then transitions into a power class at 95 to 100 degrees.

HOT SEQUENCE:

This is the signature set sequence, being a blend between the Bikram and Ashtanga sequences.

POWER:

Classes are heated, strength-building, full-body blasts designed to build focus, endurance, and flexibility.

SCULPT AND FLOW:

Brings the best of both worlds of lifting weights and internal training cardio and cooling down with yoga.

RESTORE:

A chill, Zen class where you can hold postures for more extended periods and focus on breathing.

Maintaining a “Spa’sitive” Lifestyle STORY BY MEGAN FORD | PHOTOS BY CHARLIE NEUENSCHWANDER PHOTOGRAPHY

Struggling with an unhealthy lifestyle can take a toll on your physical health and your mental and spiritual health. Dr. Allison Lees, chiropractor and owner of Fit Spa, battled obesity her entire childhood, weighing 150 pounds at the age of eight. After the continuous journey to become healthier, she wanted to share that success by opening Fit Spa. The objective of Fit Spa may be simple – to create happier and healthier clients – but they provide a vast amount of other services. The therapies tailor to anyone from a business professional wanting a healthier lifestyle after a work week, to a skilled athlete needing to concentrate on training. Lees focuses on working with athletes and specializes in sports injury treatment and prevention. Still, a team of unique, specialized therapists, techniques, and tools ultimately give clients the best holistic care based on their individual needs. The spa offers both chiropractic and therapeutic services. Chiropractic is the leading form of alternative health care. It focuses on the relationship between the body’s main structures—the skeleton, the muscles, and the nerves—and the patient’s health. It is most commonly used to treat neuromusculoskeletal conditions and to improve overall health through balancing the spine and nervous system. Dr. Lees also provides Advanced Muscle Integration Technique or AMIT, to treat and even predict injuries by identifying and correcting muscle inhibition and instabilities in the body.

The biocharger is a subtle energy platform that simultaneously transmits four different types of energies, including pulsed electromagnetic fields (used for earthing and grounding), voltage (anything emitted during a lightning storm), frequencies and harmonics, and light. The therapists use different recipes to accomplish specific goals, but ultimately, it’s a human recharging station that charges a body as one would charge a cellphone. Infrared saunas are full-spectrum saunas with many benefits, including cell health, muscle recovery, improved immune function, antiaging, blood pressure and circulation, weight loss improvement, pain relief, and decreased stress. You leave feeling refreshed and energized. Joovv Redlight uses a mix of red and nearinfrared light that increases ATP production, reduces oxidative stress, repairs your tissues, offers skin health, improved muscle recovery, better sexual health, mental clarity, and better relaxation and sleep. Whole-body cryotherapy is the use of extremely low air temperatures to accelerate the body’s natural recovery. It also improves overall well-being and energizes the body, so it’s essentially an efficient ice bath without the pain and extra time. Benefits include decreased recovery time, pain relief, reduced inflammation, weight loss, collagen production, increased mitochondria – the cell’s powerhouse – increased energy, improved sleep, and better joint function.

Therapeutic massage is mainly condition-based. Traditionally, the therapist will work directly with the doctor to accomplish the goal to decrease pain and improve range of motion and decrease stress. They also offer hot stone, cupping, and aromatherapy massages. Acupuncture balances the body’s energy using sterile, tiny needles that typically don’t cause any discomfort. It’s a relaxing process that treats many conditions, including headaches, depression or anxiety, stress, joint pain, and healing for a cold, sinus infection, or allergies, in addition to focusing on infertility. These are just some of the services offered at Fit Spa. The spa caters to clients by providing unique care plans after a therapist listens carefully to their needs. Lees states, “Our team tweaks the plan according to where the client is that day, so if you’re having an off day, they will cater to that, no matter what stage they’re at.” They currently have one location in Nichols Hills but plan to expand in the future. > For more information, visit fitspaokc.com

7 Tips on Buying Running Shoes Finding the best-fitting shoe among the numerous choices at your local running store isn’t always easy.

Whether you’re training for a race or just a regular road runner, wearing a good pair of shoes can help prevent injuries and make your run more enjoyable overall. These 7 tips by local triathlete and running enthusiast Lindsay Gin will help you walk out a happy customer.

1.

HOW DOES A RUNNING SHOE AFFECT ONE’S REGULAR RUNNING STRIDE? A properly fit

running shoe can improve your running experience from your feet all the way up to your shoulders/neck. A properly fitting shoe can help support your running technique to maximize comfort, increase efficiency, and reduce injuries over time.

3.

WHY DOES THE HEEL HEIGHT MATTER? Although

difficult to see just out of the box or on the shelf, running shoes are designed with different heel heights: this is called the “heel to toe drop.” The “drop” is the vertical difference between the heel and toe height on a shoe. Although the drop measurements between shoes may be only millimeters different, this measurement can drastically affect your running experience. As a starting point, experts recommend a higher heel drop if you are a heel striker or have Achilles tendon issues; a lower heel drop is ideal for mid- to front-foot runners. You can determine what drop is best for your foot based on your gait, stride, comfort, and activity.

Similar to how we all can experience neck pain with a soft or dense pillow, the same goes for the cushioning in your shoe. More cushioning doesn’t always mean better. Look for a cushion that provides the best stability for your foot, gait, and activity. For example, a long run may feel better with a more cushioned shoe but could feel too bulky and elevated for a speed or tempo run. I prefer shoes with a minimal cushion but get that impact protection with cushioned socks.

4.

WHAT IS AN OUTSOLE? The outsole of a shoe is

the external portion of the shoe that hits the ground. The outsole construction is key to the type of activity you plan to do. Think about the difference between the tires for a trial or road bike; the same goes for running shoes. The outsole for a trail or gravel shoe will be more rugged and textured compared to a road, racing, or track shoe.

WHAT ARE COMMON SHOE-BUYER MISTAKES?

5.

Assuming your fashion shoe size equals your running shoe size. Most runners are 1/2 to 1 full size up from their normal shoe size (this helps save your toenails too!). Not knowing your gait. Many of your local specialty running stores provide free gait analysis. It will help you determine the best type of shoe for you. Don’t be intimidated to go into a store regardless of your running ability. The footwear educators are always friendly and enthusiastic to help answer questions. We were all beginners at some point! Letting color preference guide your shoe choice over correct fit. I know this is tough, but trust me. Always go with fit/comfort. It sounds extreme, but if I get a pair of shoes and love the fit but they are in my least favorite color combo, it convinces me to run more miles and wear them out so I can get a new pair in new colors. If you are a size 7, it doesn’t mean you will be a size 7 in all brands nor will it mean you are a size 7 in all shoe styles from one brand. For example, I usually wear a 7 in Saucony but 7.5 in Nike (even then I have size 7 and 7.5 in different Nike running shoe styles). I always recommend buying in-store (and locally) as it helps make sure you know what you’re stepping into—pun intended.

6.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FEATURE IN A RUNNING SHOE? Oh, this is a tough one.

As a former children’s footwear designer, I’m fascinated by all aspects of a shoe: design, construction, fit, and aesthetics. My favorite feature is the midsole. I recommend looking up articles about the great carbon plate debate. Innovations in midsole construction have exploded in the past few years. This has sparked conversations about what is an innovation and what is an unfair advantage. Additionally, I am a fan of the full knit uppers; this is where a majority of the shoe’s upper is knit on a machine. It’s a win-win all around because it improves fit and comfort while also reducing wasted material in the construction processes. Some companies are even using recycled plastic to knit the uppers!

HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED TO REPL ACE RUNNING SHOES? It is recommended to replace your shoes about every

500 miles. If this seems hard to track, here are a few solutions: • There are fitness apps that help track mileage on shoes. • You can also look at the bottom of your shoe. If you see the main tread is flat/ worn or showing the midsole foam, it’s time to get a new pair. • My secret trick is if I step on a rock, crack, or stick and can feel the contours, I know it’s time to get new shoes (probably yesterday). • If pain arises in your feet or knees, it may also be a sign that you need new shoes. If the problem continues, seek advice from a medical professional. • Direct sunlight and moisture can also negatively affect your shoes’ longevity by breaking down the materials faster. This is something to keep in mind even if you haven’t covered 500 miles in a pair of shoes.

The Calm During the Storm STORY BY MEGAN FORD

Tornado season took a backseat in October of 2020 in Oklahoma, as a rare ice storm left 300,000 without power for weeks. Thousands rushed to the nearest hardware stores to buy the last generators in stock as others scrambled for firewood. The storm was one of the most severe disasters to have occurred, but certainly not the first. To have peace of mind by protecting your family’s well-being is invaluable, and possible with the help of Generator Supercenter of Oklahoma. They are the leader in Generac whole-house generators, offering skilled and effective technicians and electricians to ensure your family is never left in the dark or the cold. After working with Generac for years, Austin Partida, the owner of Generator Supercenter of Oklahoma, knew he wanted to stay in the generator business. Their focus is primarily residential, but they provide generators for businesses, data centers, nursing homes, and law offices. They are the largest Generac dealer in the state and are associated with the largest dealer in the country. Partida graduated from OSU and went to a rural electric cooperative that services electricity to rural areas. During that time, he was introduced to the manufacturer of Generac generators by offering them to their consumers. After receiving support from his wife during her residency and guidance from his father-in-law, an entrepreneur himself, he decided there was no better time to work for himself than now. They’ve since grown into a preferred partner by many big-box retailers and utility partners.

The difference between a whole-house generator and one that you would purchase at a hardware store is a whole-home generator allows a homeowner to live like normal when there is a power disruption. Typically, when the power goes out, everything is disrupted. A Generac automatically comes on when it detects a power outage, saving you the trouble of waiting on your power supplier to have to come to turn it on. Additionally, a portable charger has limitations by only supplying power to the outlet. They can also be dangerous because of carbon monoxide, and inconvenient to fill with gasoline, whereas house generators tie into natural gas or liquid propane. Partida said, “The 2020 ice storm was astronomical how many people were without heat, power, and food. In an event like that, it’s all hands on deck; we work 24/7 around the clock with customers who go without power.” They stopped selling to focus on those in need and expedited the installation of orders placed the week the storm hit. The waiting time on an installation is about 90 days, but it’s a one-day job 98% of the time. A person comes to assess your needs and the placement of where the generator can go, so the process is hassle-free from start to finish. They have a monitor program that connects to your cell phone to notify the app when the generator needs service. It allows the experts to take care of the generators, while the customer cares for their families and jobs during a crisis.

Skincare Beyond the Surface STORY BY MEGAN FORD

An effective skin routine goes deeper than moisturizing after your nightly makeup removal, albeit it’s a good start. Elevate Wellness & Aesthetics provides advanced skincare and non-invasive treatments that create lasting improvements to the skin rather than only focusing on the surface-level upkeep. The services provided include aesthetic injectables, laser skin treatments, hormone therapy, IV and injectable vitamin therapy, HydraFacials, and micro-needling. Ashley Willeford, the medspa owner, always knew she wanted to work in women’s health. She began her career as a labor and delivery nurse before nurse practitioner school and then worked at a well-known OB-GYN practice. After having four kids, Willeford realized she wanted to own her own business to allow flexibility with her work schedule and personal life. A touching moment occurred when her daughter asked if she could attend her fourth-grade field trip, but Willeford didn’t have enough notice to request off work. The realization that it was the last year she could participate in field trips inspired the change in her career path. Willeford knew many other mothers were balancing their careers and motherhood and desperately needing to incorporate self-care into their lives. “As women, we take care of everyone around us first, and self-care always comes last,” Willeford says. “I wanted a place for people to be able to come in and focus on themselves first.” Allowing women to focus on their well-being truly inspired Ashley to start the medspa, but the services aren’t limited only to women; they see both male and female clients from the ages of 10 to 90.

Willeford says, “Whenever you can feel your best, whether that be mentally or physically, you feel confident. If you look in the mirror and know that you can improve your best qualities and boost your confidence and overall well-being, why wouldn’t you?” The biggest accomplishment of opening the medspa, Willeford believes, is the relationships that they have built with the people who come in, adding that “75% of the people that walk through our door end up being lifelong friends, so that has been such a huge value since opening.” Willeford goes on to say, “The relationships we’ve built, not only with the team internally but with the clients who come in, is like a family unit. My goal is for everyone that walks into the facility to feel welcomed and immediately know they’ll be cared for by highly trained staff on a personal level, not just transactional.” Willeford ensures that they are very conservative with treatments to alleviate the hesitations of someone anxious to make an appointment. “We never want to change the way anyone looks but rather enhance natural beauty or help improve something that subconsciously bothers them,” she says. Willeford has been blown away by how quickly things have grown in their first three years. She would love to continue to grow and better serve the community and metro. There are no definitive answers about where the company will go, but she feels confident that big things are in store. > Visit us at 2312 N Interstate Dr, Norman or online at elevatewellnessandaesthetics.com

Muscle Recovery Methods Post workout recovery should be integrated into every fitness routine. Restore your body after your next sweat session with any of these five go-to methods.

Stretching Where to go? STRETCH LAB

Performing stretches on a regular basis may improve your blood circulation. Improved circulation increases blood flow to your muscles, which can shorten your recovery time and reduce muscle soreness. Stretching muscles that feel tense and tight can help relax them. In turn, this may help lower your stress levels and help you feel calmer.

Float Therapy Where to go? FLOAT OKC

The weightlessness in the tank reduces stress and inflammation on muscles and joints. This lowers pain and greatly helps with injury or post-workout recovery. The magnesium in the Epsom salt also helps muscles function properly while reducing blood pressure and regulating the stress hormone cortisol.

Cupping Therapy creates a suction and negative pressure, lifting the connective tissue and releasing rigid tissue. Cupping pulls stagnation, waste, and toxins to the skin level where it can be flushed out by the lymphatic and circulatory system.

Compression Therapy Where to go? ARC RECOVERY

They use compressed air to massage your limbs, mobilize fluid, and speed recovery with their patented NormaTec Pulse Massage Pattern.

Pure Tranquility STORY BY MEGAN FORD

Two years ago, Emily Woodside embarked on starting Purity Day Spa without a single client, but with a strong passion for helping people. After just five months of starting the business, the pandemic hit. A giant leap of faith is required to start a business under any circumstance but staying afloat during a pandemic requires an entirely different level of grit and perseverance. During the shutdown, Woodside and her team utilized the time to build training manuals, put processes in place, and focus on their newborn. They did everything in their power to efficiently get the spa running before they could open so they could take part in helping heal the metro when that time came. Before opening the spa, Woodside had worked in the

corporate world for a few years but was adamant about keeping the business open and not going back into such a structured environment, instead dedicating this chapter of life to self-help. Purity Day Spa specializes in holistic treatments that empower clients to accomplish overall well-being. Woodside says that she feels spas are underutilized and that the services offered at Purity Day Spa genuinely help your overall wellness. “Mental health, grieving, chronic pain – the person that walks through the door leaves all of that behind after consulting with us to select a service we provide that’s the best fit.” The estheticians and massage therapists work with the client and their needs to understand what specific service is required and then develop the best plan.

The spa specializes in cupping therapy, micro-needling, dermaplaning, facials, couples’ massages, and more. Woodside recommends the Purity Package: an hour-long massage and a facial at a 10% discount for first-time visitors to decide if they will like a massage or facial. She says that 90% come back and try other things on the menu after trying the package. The spa believes in using the purest ingredients, non-toxic cleaning products, skincare, and massage oil. Purity takes pride in being a holistic spa and caters to a niche group looking for an alternative to injectables by providing HydraFacials and other clinical facials. Other services offered include calming scrubs, hydration wraps, and infrared saunas. A body service you might select is the lavender scrub: it’s a fullbody treatment that starts with drizzling warm lavender oil and finishes with a lavender scrub and balm to leave your body relaxed. A full-body ritual could incorporate a citrus hydration wrap, massage, and oil scalp treatment. A sauna pass includes access to the infrared sauna and locker room amenities. You name it, they provide it! Before the pandemic, they regularly held workshops, which they plan to get back into in the future. If you’re driving down Blackwelder in the Plaza, you’ll notice a cozy-looking house painted green that you can’t help but stop in for a peek. That’s where you’ll find the team at Purity Day Spa. The Blackwelder location is the only location currently, but Woodside says, “We would love to open a second location in the future and fully intend on doing so.”

“Purity Day Spa specializes in holistic treatments that empower clients to accomplish overall well-being.”
