Creative-Writing Major and Minor at Penn State Harrisburg

Here at Penn State Harrisburg, we love creative writing. Across the disciplines, many companies state that writing majors and minors are in high demand, as they can demonstrate a person’s ability to communicate creatively and persuasively in a variety of genres and formats. If you are an aspiring writer or would like to learn more about creative writing and how to expand your skill set, in addition to taking creative-writing classes, you might consider adding a Creative-Writing Minor to your existing major, or completing your English Major with a Creative Writing Option. Each semester, our experienced faculty offer introductory and advanced courses in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and drama, as well as multi-genre introductory creative writing courses.

In creative writing workshops, which are a staple of all of creative-writing courses, you have the opportunity to write and revise your work for an audience of your peers with the instructor and fellow students giving you feedback every step of the way. Additionally, creative-writing organizations (like Fission and From the Fallout Shelter, FTFS) and related coursework can provide a literary foundation in the craft of writing and revising, as well as practical skills in editing and publishing in traditional and new-media formats. Each year PSH publishes two literary journals, both of which are edited by students. Writers of all levels of experience, from just beginning to advanced, are welcome to inquire. To get involved with the journals as a student editor, please reach out directly to Dr. Eric Bliman (emb35@psu.edu, for information about Fission) or to Prof. Ashley Cowger (afc11@psu.edu, for information about FTFS).
