Good local news will always win our vote THE election campaign is in full swing - with Bristol East in the spotlight.

Early polls made the Conservatives decide it would be one of their target constituencies, with Theodora Clarke - who also fought the seat in 2015 - aiming to replace Labour's Kerry McCarthy, the area's MP since 2005.

The Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson was drafted in to support her campaign - but the visit to a Sikh temple did not go well, as we report on page 16. Miss Clarke has also seen some negative headlines after claiming her home was 'near Stockwood' when it is a cottage on her uncle Jacob Rees-Mogg's estate in East Harptree.

Frome Vale councillor Lesley Alexander in her ceremonial robes as the new Lord Mayor of Bristol

Lesley becomes new Lord Mayor FROME Vale councillor Lesley Alexander has been named as Bristol's new Lord Mayor.

The Conservative councillor will take over the ceremonial role from Councillor Jeff Lovell who stepped down after his year in office on May 23.

Lesley, 70, has a busy year ahead of her and will have around 800 engagements, from greeting royals to attending charity events, scheduled in her diary.

Her husband Charles will accompany her, acting as consort for her varied commitments.

The role will see Lesley promote the city of Bristol and support a wide range of Bristolbased organisations.

"I'm delighted," Lesley said of her prestigious appointment.

"I'm a bit apprehensive but so far it's been absolutely brilliant

and people have been lovely to me."

As a young woman growing up in Somerton in the Yeovil constituency, Lesley took a keen interest in politics, becoming a Young Conservative at 17.

"It didn't kick off much further than that until I came to Bristol 40 years ago," Lesley said.

"I was an activist until I retired from work and stood for council in 2003. I've been a councillor for Frome Vale ever since."

Lesley was nominated for the role of Lord Mayor by her party group before receiving the backing of all councillors.

As the role of Lord Mayor is non-political, Lesley will not sit on any committees during her year in office but will continue as councillor of Frome Vale.

Lesley is very keen to give help and support to people and councillors who are interested in starting retirement clubs.

"I started the Begbrook Club about three years ago and I've now got a very good team of people on the committee there.

We do all sorts of things and it's been one of my success stories, along with saving the library."

Lesley says she will continue to support her ward.

"Frome Vale is a very attractive ward with a lot of green open space. The people are very friendly and I've always enjoyed being a councillor there.

Community spirit has gone up tremendously since I started as a councillor.

"I just like helping people and want to make Fishponds a better place."

n NEWS Scout groups join forces TWO local Scout Groups, the 197th Bristol (based at the Scout HQ in Stonechat Gardens, Stapleton) and the 55th St Mary's Fishponds, have joined forces at Stonechat Gardens to become the 252 Bristol.

Praise from Ofsted marks the end of an era for junior school CHESTER Park Junior School has moved out of its old buildings on a high note - by getting another Good rating from Ofsted.

Her Majesty’s Inspector Kathy Maddocks, who visited in April, said the school had maintained its high quality of education since 2012.

She praised head teacher Mike McNama for improvements made since he took up his post in September 2016 and said he had “continued the ethos of ‘caring and happy, purposeful and peaceful’ while jointly achieving success within the diverse comm unity you serve”.

The inspector said efforts to build stronger links with parents had been particularly successful.

In a letter to parents after the publication of the Ofsted findings, Mr McNama said: “I think the report reflects the

“The school is supported and challenged by an able governing body who hold the welfare and best interests of your children at heart in all decisions that are made. Governors are heavily involved in many aspects of school life and contribute to the provision made for the pupils.

Parents and carers continue to engage well with the school and more and more are becoming actively involved in school life through Friends, reading or parental groups.

“During the recent anti bullying week over 150 parents visited the school to share the

children’s learning linked to this important topic.”

The Victorian school closed its doors to junior school pupils for the last time on May 26. To mark the occasion, children joined hands around the building and sang songs.

They will move into their new building in Abingdon Road on June 12.

Former pupils and parents also had the chance to say farewell to the school at an event on May 13 organised by the Friends of the School.

After refurbishment, the old school will be used to expand Chester Park Infant School to meet increased demand for school places. This will mean that the infant school will be able to take in 90 90 children a year instead of 75, while the junior school’s annual intake will grow from 60 to 90.

Something's brewing at Snuffy Jacks FISHPONDS' much anticipated first micro pub is just weeks away from opening.

Snuffy Jacks Ale House will open its doors to the public on Saturday June 24 after planning permission was recently granted to convert the old Osborne Stationers into a small and intimate bar.

Micro pubs are different to many standard pubs and aim to promote conversation by doing away with gaming and fruit machines, televisions, juke boxes and live music.

There are now more than 175 micropubs across the UK with two already established in Bristol - one in Gloucester Road and one in Chandos Road.

Snuffy Jacks will offer real ale straight from the barrel, traditional ciders, wines and a selection of gins, much of which will be sourced locally from Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wales. There will also be guest ales from further afield and unfined beers to cater for the

vegan community.

The micro pub will also serve good quality bar snacks including traditional favourite, pickled eggs.

Instead of music and TV screens, people will be encouraged to make conversation and play board games for entertainment.

Snuffy Jacks is the brainchild of Fishponds residents John Fallon and David Sibley who say they have been bowled over

by the amount of support in Fishponds that their venture has attracted.

John, who has previously worked as an assistant manager with a brewery, said: "We've been flabbergasted by the support from local people. We weren't expecting a negative response but the support we received was unprecedented.

"There's nothing like Snuffy Jacks in Fishponds. The concept is to concentrate on real ales and

ciders and there aren't many places that do that.

“Over the last year, the growing sense of community spirit has really strengthened in Fishponds and Snuffy Jacks is happy to be a part of it. By turning an unloved premises into the micro pub we hope to contribute to the thriving heart of where we live.”

Decor will give a relaxed and cosy feel with dark blue walls. Artwork from local artists and photographers will adorn walls, adding to the sense of community.

Grand efforts give Jack's Fund a boost THE Downend charity Jack Banks Star Tribute Fund is within sight of its latest fundraising target for Bristol Children's Hospital.

Paula Banks and her family are aiming to pay for a £70,000 refurbishment of the bone marrow transplant area on the children's cancer ward.

This follows their feat of raising more than £100,000 for the hospital following the death of Jack from leukaemia in 2008 after four years of treatment there.

The money raised has paid for a conservatory and playroom at the hospital as well as providing a jukebox, emergency palliative care bags, Wii fits and the popular Captain Jack's treasure chests, which contain toys and treats for young patients.

Paula said they were now about £10,000 away from the target for the isolation rooms

upgrade.

A third 'Pop Go the Legals' night at The Tunnels organised by her employers Osborne Clarke brought in £2,850.

Staff and customers at Porto Lounge in Fishponds have also been backing Jack's Fund, which is part of the Wallace and Gromit Grand Appeal. They have held bake sales, craft days and quizzes and smashed their £500 target.

Paula said she was delighted by all the support the fund continues to receive from local people.

“We are looking forward to this refurb,” she said. “ It will make the rooms more welcoming for children by bringing in the same theme as the playroom and oncology areas of the unit as well as making the rooms more functional for the patients, their families and the medical team.”

Masons' afternoon of fun for the community FREEMASONS are celebrating the 300th anniversary of Grand Lodge by engaging with their local community.

Seven Gloucestershire lodges meet at the masonic hall in Park Road, Stapleton, and members ventured a stone’s throw away to Elm Tree Farm to offer up some practical help as well as put on an afternoon of fun and entertainment.

The event brought in £1,000 for the farm, which is run by the Brandon Trust to provide support and training to adults with learning disabilities and autism. The money will go towards a multi activity centre on the 47-acre site.

The Provincial Grand Master of Gloucestershire, Tim Henderson-Ross and his Assistant, Nigel Bridges, were among the many visiting masons.

Builders get on with their school work WORK has started on a new school to replace existing facilities at Minerva Primary Academy.

The two-storey development will feature a nursery, reception classrooms, infant classrooms, junior classrooms, offices, staff facilities, a main hall, studio and kitchen as well as new landscaping.

To mark the start of work Bristol's Lord Mayor, Councillor Jeff Lovell, joined forces with pupils at a turf-cutting ceremony.

The project at the Hillfields school is to be completed using modern methods of off-site construction which will enable building work to be finished in a much quicker time-scale.

The new building is scheduled for completion in November 2018 and the official opening is programmed for July 2019.

Once completed, the current capacity of 300 pupils will increase to 420.

How Fishponds taught the world to sing Many people may not be aware of the huge contribution made to popular music by two Fishponds men, although they are sure to know many of the songs they wrote including The Fortunes' hit 'You've Got Your Troubles' and Gene Pitney's smash 'Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart'. Pete Rowley, musician and owner of Bristol's Attic Attack Recording Studio, tells the fascinating story of how Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway went on to become music industry legends ROGER Cook and Roger Greenaway were born and grew up in Fishponds, becoming professional musicians around 1958. Each had reasonably successful careers without making the big time. Roger Cook played in the Sapphires (a band that won a national talent contest), the Londons and John & Julie before becoming an indemand pantomime actor!

Roger Greenaway was in a vocal group, the Kestrels, that toured constantly and came close to having a hit record. They played with the likes of Billy Fury and Lonnie Donegan and even appeared higher on the same bill as the Beatles in 1963.

When lead singer Tony

Burrows left at the end of 1964, Roger Greenaway suggested his friend Roger Cook as a replacement, and although the band split up a few weeks later, a great partnership was born. During that short time, in a dressing room in Cleethorpes, they wrote their first song together, 'You've Got Your Troubles', and it went on to become a huge hit for The Fortunes.

Cook & Greenaway then came to the attention of Beatles' producer George Martin after he heard their demos and was impressed. He suggested that they become a recording duo and his wife came up with the name David & Jonathan. They

had their first hit with a Beatles cover, 'Michelle' and their biggest hit with their own song, 'Lovers Of The World Unite' in 1966.

This partnership lasted until 1968, during which time they wrote many songs for themselves as well as continuing to write for others. Their songs were covered by some of the big names of the day and many were top ten hits, including 'I Was Kaiser Bill’s Batman' (Whistling Jack Smith), 'Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart' (Gene Pitney), 'The Way It Used To Be' (Engelbert Humperdink) and 'Good Times Better Times' (Cliff Richard).

David & Jonathan came to an end in order to allow them more time to write, but they also became in-demand session singers (they sang on early Elton John albums, and Elton once spent a night at Cook's house in Fishponds). Around the turn of the 1970s, Greenaway was in ad hoc bands with various session musicians and had hits such as 'United We Stand' (Brotherhood Of Man), 'My Baby Loves Lovin' (White Plains) and 'Gimme Dat Ding' (Pipkins). Meanwhile, Cook had been asked to join a new band called Blue Mink, that went on to have a string of hits such as 'Melting Pot' and 'The Banner Man'. Many of the hits for these acts were written by Cook & Greenaway.

As early as 1966, they had been asked to write jingles for Coca-Cola and it was a relationship that lasted well into the 1970s. A Cook/Greenaway song, 'True Love And Apple Pie' was transformed into a jingle

Musician Pete Rowley in 1970 and went on to become their biggest hit. 'I'd Like To Buy The World A Coke', and its famous TV advert showing a multi-racial crowd of young people singing the song became an iconic image. A few lyric changes turned the song into 'I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing' and a huge hit for the New Seekers.

There were more hits for others in the early 1970s, 'Home Lovin’ Man' (Andy Williams), 'Something Old Something New' (Fantastics), 'Something Tells Me Something’s Gonna Happen Tonight' (Cilla Black), 'Softly Whispering I Love You' (Congregation), 'Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress' (The Hollies).

In 1975 Cook decided to move to the USA, ending the songwriting partnership, although they remain friends to this day. Greenaway continued to write with others and had a string of hits with the Drifters as well as others such as 'It’s Gonna Be A Cold, Cold Christmas' (Dana) and 'Jeans On' (David Dundas). He then moved to the administration side of the music business and held top positions with both British and American

Roger Cook and Roger Greenway today royalty collection agencies. In 1998 he was awarded an OBE. Cook settled in Nashville and moved into the country music market. His biggest success came with 'Talking In Your Sleep' for Crystal Gayle, but he has had many country hits, including two number ones for Don Williams.

He is the only British person to enter the Country Music Hall Of Fame.

With over 40 top ten hits as songwriters, a few more as performers as well as many jingles for Coca-Cola and others, and acting as session singers and producers on many records, Fishponds can be proud of its two famous sons! Roger Cook even wrote a song about the house he grew up in. It's called, '3 Parnall Road, Fishponds, Bristol' and appears on his 1970 solo album, 'Study'.

I MET Roger Cook in 1993 when he had returned to Bristol and set up a club for songwriters. By coincidence, when I moved to Fishponds in 2002, it was to the road where Cook had grown up. One day, sitting in the Kingfisher with Stuart Sole, we were discussing what we might talk about if we were to give a presentation at the People's University of Fishponds (PUF). I said it had to be about Cook and Greenaway as they were locals. When I started to reel off the names of their hits, Stuart was amazed at how many there were and how many he hadn't realised were written by them. We gave our talk, 'How Fishponds Taught The World To Sing' at PUF in April, a multimedia presentation with clips of many of the hits (we even performed a couple of them).

To our surprise and delight the sell-out crowd included Cook's son, two grandsons, a first cousin and his sisterin-law!

Red-letter day as Phyllis, 95, gets

Phyllis on fire duty in London with Red Watch during the Second World War

DESPITE serving as a civilian telephone operator and firewatcher during the Second World War, Phyllis Green thought she would never be awarded the Civil Defence Medal she so richly deserved.

Her service records were lost when the fire station she served at was bombed and this meant Phyllis was unable to claim her medal following the war.

But thanks to some painstaking detective work by her family, Phyllis was finally presented with her medal during celebrations to mark her 95th birthday.

It came as a complete surprise to Phyllis, with her family saying she was "overwhelmed" with emotion.

Phyllis, who lives in Woodlands Court, Downend, was born and bred in South London and had qualified for the award by serving as a civilian telephone operator and fire-watcher with

Her son Chris Green said it was a case of providing evidence to prove Phyllis had indeed served, which was tricky as her records were lost.

Chris, who looks after Bromley Heath Scout and Guide HQ, said: "I had to do a bit of detective work! First of all I went to the War Office but they only deal with war medals so they pointed me to the Cabinet Office.

I went to them and discovered my brother Cliff had already tried to claim her medal some years ago but was unable to provide sufficient information so he didn't get anywhere.

"I think I was very lucky because the guy who was in charge of civil medals at the Cabinet Office was so helpful and encouraging. I kept saying I didn't have anything else to show

him but he said 'Come on, let's not give up!'"

The civil servant asked Chris if he could provide any photographs of his mother during her years of service and Chris then came up trumps.

"I went off and in mum's collection of old stuff I found some old photos and there was mum in her uniform!"

But there were still gaps to fill so Chris quietly recruited his son Robert to casually ask his grandmother questions about her time in the war.

Her answers were mentally recorded and the official forms completed.

Chris said: "The man in the Cabinet Office then told me the information we had provided was sufficient and Phyllis was justified in having the medal.

He sent it to me with a very nice letter congratulating her and wishing her a very happy 95th birthday."

her medal at last

Phyllis with her medal Phyllis was still in the dark until her recent birthday bash where her great-granddaughter Eloise presented the medal to her, surrounded by 23 other family members, including her three sons Chris, Cliff, and Colin, seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. There

was even a special visit from her niece all the way from Australia.

"She was absolutely delighted and overwhelmed," said Chris.

"After the war lots of things were lost or had been disposed of and she thought she'd missed the opportunity. We just pieced everything together from stories she told us but what clinched it were the photographs we found.

I wouldn't have got the medal though without the Cabinet Office being so helpful."

Phyllis married Maurice on April 26, 1941, her 19th birthday.

Maurice served in the British Expeditionary Force, taking a week's leave to marry his sweetheart.

Phyllis moved from South London to Wimborne in Dorset in the early 1980s. She moved to Downend after her husband died nine years ago so she could be closer to son Chris, who moved to the area when his company relocated to the South West in the 1970s.

Changing times for Dings rugby AN EXHIBITION chronicles the life of one of the oldest rugby clubs in Bristol as it prepares to embark upon a new period in its history.

Dings Crusaders Rugby Football Club was established some 120 years ago, with its roots in the Dings - a working class area between Barton Hill and Temple Meads.

The Shaftesbury Crusade, a Christian mission in the area, encouraged sporting activity in the Dings. In 1897 HW Rudge founded Dings Crusaders as part of the Dings Boys Club. In 1948 the club moved to a new ground in Landseer Avenue, Lockleaze.

In 2014 it was decided to move again, this time to Frenchay. A 26-acre site was

available in Frenchay Park Road, opposite the old Frenchay Hospital, and the sale of the land in Lockleaze for housing paid for a new clubhouse and gymnasium, and two full-size pitches, and junior pitches.

The club is entirely amateur, and "we don't play for personal gain" is a poignant line in the club's anthem.

The club has mounted a display in Frenchay Village Museum encompassing their 120-year history, which runs until the end of June.

The museum is located at the junction of Frenchay Park Road and Begbrook Park. It’s open Saturdays and Sundays from 2pm to 5pm and Wednesdays from 1pm to 4pm. Entry is free.

Parents battle school funding cuts THOUSANDS of parents in Bristol have been taking action in protest against cuts to education funding.

The Fair Funding For All Schools campaign began in the spring as it became clear that a proposed new national funding formula, designed to reduce inequality in the way education budgets were allocated, was not going to benefit 98 per cent of schools, including those most in need.

Theresa May’s decision to call a snap general election brought the matter into sharper focus, with supporters

being encouraged to question candidates about their views on school funding and a number of hustings meetings being organised.

All the parties say schools will receive more money under their plans, but campaigners say the amount per pupil will be significantly lower.

Some schools are warning parents that the pressure on their budgets - including increased pension and National Insurance contributions and rising bills - will mean a realterms funding gap and will lead to some tough decisions.

Staple Hill Primary governors have written to families saying the school faces a £100,000 cut in the 2018-19 financial year - equivalent to a monthly contribution of £33 per child.

“The school needs to take drastic action,” they say.

“We will be looking at options such as: * reducing staffing levels * changes to school hours * increasing class sizes * reducing provision such as breakfast clubs, after-school clubs and school trips."

Eric Mutch, a parent governor at the school, told

Boris accused of lacking respect at Sikh temple FOREIGN Secretary Boris Johnson’s visit to east Bristol in the general election campaign did not go quite as planned.

The colourful politician was accompanying Theo Clarke, the Conservative who hopes to take the seat from Labour’s Kerry McCarthy, on a visit to the Nirman Sewak Jatha-Sikh Temple in Summerhill Road.

But things went wrong when he spoke approvingly of the prospect of increased whisky exports to India after Brexit.

One woman, Balbir Kaur, took Mr Johnson to task for promoting alcohol among Sikhs, whose religion prohibits drinking. She said his comments were disrespecful,.

Later, Mr Johnson upset others with his answers to questions about the Skih Genocide in 1984, halal food labelling and supporting teachers from minority ethnic backgrounds.

The visit ended with a talk to the Voice, the Bristol Post and Radio Bristol - the only media invited - in which little was revealed about the Tory manifesto, due out the next day.

Reports and recordings of Mr Johnson’s remarks attracted widespread publicity, while his visit to a cafe in Yate, where TV cameras had been invited, drew scant attention.

I am a strong believer in equality and fairness. I live in the city I love, but it’s also a city where evidence of inequality is everywhere. For years, under Labour and Tory-Lib Dem governments, that inequality has only got worse.

I think Bristol deserves better.

People have the right to an education, a decent job that pays a living wage and housing they can afford, good public services and quality healthcare. People have a right to drink clean water and breathe clean air.

I am committed to green values and beliefs, and have a good understanding of policy matters. I would want to promote progressive legislation on mental health and wellbeing provision, work to close corporate tax loopholes and use the revenue generated to end austerity, and push for measures to improve air quality, particularly in urban areas such as east Bristol, through low emission zones.

Over the next five years the communities of Bristol East will need particularly effective representation as the country faces up to the consequences of Brexit, so strongly opposed by the people of Bristol.

I believe that I can bring a wide range of experience to that task.

Since leaving university I have been a local councillor, a teacher, set up my own business, worked for a non-profit organisation helping young people, and provided business advice and training to other companies. I also have a strong track record of experience in the growing social media sector.

A major challenge in the next Parliament will be the protection of our public services in the face of public spending pressures, and I have worked with and learnt from senior politicians when pressurising central government on these issues. I also believe that my business experience will help me play a role in attracting new much-needed jobs and investment into the area. My other priority will be campaigning for people to have the final say over any Brexit deal, rather than leaving it in the hands of politicians in Brussels and Westminster.

Pupils dig in to enjoy outdoor

CHILDREN at Glenfrome Primary School spent an entire day learning outdoors last month to mark International Empty Classroom Day. On May 18 the school made the most of its six acres of beautiful grounds, as well as neighbouring open spaces such as South Purdown and Eastville Park. Anyone coming to school on that day found all the classrooms empty!

The school also celebrated the opening of a brand new poly tunnel, kindly donated by Learning Through Nature, and a brilliant vegetable garden.

The addition of a polytunnel means the school can grow even more fruit and vegetables throughout the year and children can help with everything from seed germination through to cooking and eating.

Last year, children grew more than 20 pumpkins, and this year they are hoping to repeat this, as well as growing peas, beans, courgettes, broccoli, potatoes and lots more.

The garden will be managed by children in the afterschool and lunchtime gardening clubs and teachers will use the garden to teach subjects like maths, science and art.

The polytunnel and vegetable garden is the latest addition to the school orchard, where children planted 12 apple and pear trees, raspberries and strawberries which will all start producing fruit this year.

Head techer Inger O’Callaghan said: "At Glenfrome we use our lovely grounds to enhance all areas of learning.

This poly tunnel will give us even more opportunities to inspire our children."

Appeal for information on two burglaries POLICE are appealing for witnesses and information after two burglaries in east Bristol.

The first happened in Overndale Road, Fishponds, at around 10.30pm on Friday April 28. A woman was alone in the house when thieves broke in by forcing an upstairs window and searched through the property, taking two wallets.

The woman was watching television and was unaware of the break-in until her husband returned home.

Thieves stole a quantity of gold jewellery in a second burglary which happened in Frenchay Park Road in the Broomhill area just before 7pm on bank holiday Monday, May 1.

Police were called by a neighbour who heard an alarm sounding and saw that the patio doors were open.

Officers responded and carried out a search of the area with no trace of the suspects and enquiries are continuing.

In response to the two burglaries, police have issued the following home security advice: • Fit motion-sensing security lights around your property • Keep tools locked up in a secure shed or garage • Make sure garden furniture and wheelie bins can’t be moved to gain access to upstairs windows • Lock up and set the alarm at night as well as when you go out • Hide your keys and handbag or wallet safely out of sight • Never leave keys in the back of the door or window • Keep photographs and a description of items with sentimental value If you see someone acting suspiciously around a neighbour’s property, call the police straight away. If they’re obviously breaking in, ring 999. Otherwise, call the non-emergency number 101: our operators are on hand 24/7.

Police have carried out house-to-house enquiries and crime scene investigators have examined the properties, while the families are being given tailored home security advice.

Police say as a result of a

trend of burglars targeting cash and high-value jewellery, specialist detectives are dedicated to thoroughly investigating these offences and that their work and targeted patrols have led to dozens of

arrests since last summer.

Investigating officer DC 3222 Alastair Binnie said: “Our advice is to keep high-value jewellery with a secure storage company and cash in the bank, rather than at home, following a number of incidents in which entire safes have been stolen.

“I’d like to thank the resident who reported the alarm sounding in Broomhill – they did exactly the right thing by checking for other signs of a break-in and then calling us straight away.

“We can all help to keep our communities safe by securing our homes and joining Neighbourhood Watch.”

Turning 50 with a 60-mile run A MUM looking for a novel way to mark her 50th birthday is embarking on a gruelling 60mile run to raise money for play equipment at her son's school.

Pippa Yarworth-Cleeton will turn half a century this August and has compiled a list of 50 things to do during her 50th year.

Among them is the Race to the Stones ultra marathon on July 15 which takes in the iconic Ridgeway running from the Chilterns in Oxfordshire to the North Wessex Downs.

Sporty Pippa, who lives in Fishponds with husband James and son Jasper, will be running non-stop and plans to complete it in an impressive 15 hours.

Some of the money raised will support the event's nominated charity, The Mix, a mental health charity for under 25s but the rest will go towards funding a trim trail at Chester Park Juniors where her son is in Year 5.

Pippa, who writes qualifications for the fitness industry, said: "To celebrate my 50th I've drawn up a list of 50 things to do at 50 which includes everything from running events to getting out in the garden more.

"I do a lot of running anyway

and have done four marathons in the past but I just thought I should do something bigger. I've always fancied doing the Race to the Stones but kept putting it off.

I decided if I don't do it now I'll never do it!"

Pippa decided she would like to raise £2,000 for Chester Park Juniors as pupils are about to move into a new school but don't have any play equipment.

"I had been a governor at the infants and know how tight budgets are for the two schools.

This is the first time the children have had any green space to stand on but there's no budget for play equipment as that's classed as a luxury."

A fundraising drive by the school's PTA, supported by staff and governors, will also run alongside Pippa's campaign.

Your help can lead to positive action from police IT certainly feels like summer is here. The warmer weather means children are more likely to be playing outside, especially after school and in the school holidays.

Whilst most young people cause no problems at all, we have received some complaints from local residents around Goffenton Drive in Oldbury Court, about noise and footballs being kicked against fences, cars and walls. My PCSOs and school beat managers are currently working with Oldbury Court Community Centre to organise some activities which will help to keep young people busy and engaged.

We are also keen to help the community organise regular Playing Out sessions on local streets. Playing Out allows residents to close their road to traffic on a given day and time, so that children can safely play outside. We are happy to help set these activities up, but they do rely on local volunteers

helping to run them. If you are interested in Playing Out, then please contact PC 4407 Jo Sibson.

We recently carried out a warrant at a property in Brambling Walk in Stapleton thanks to information from the local community. The property has been causing problems for neighbours for a long time and when we searched it, we found evidence of drug dealing. Two people were arrested and their car, suspected class A drugs, cash and phones were all seized.

This is a good example of how information from you can lead us to take positive action, and help housing services to remove their most problematic tenants.

Local people shouldn’t have to put up with drug dealing in their neighbourhoods, so please tell us what you know. We’ve recently relaunched our ‘Safe Places’ service, a new 24/7 number to help people with communication difficulties stay safe when they are out and about.

Three cheers for national champs BRISTOL Metropolitan Academy’s cheerleading team Storm Angels Tornados have just been crowned national champions in their division at the Telford national finals.

Not only that but they also gained the highest score, making them national grand champions, after beating five other teams in the competition.

Previously the team competed in Guildford at the southern schools finals, coming first to win through to the nationals.

There are 45 athletes in the cheerleading team.

Every year there are trials for the squad where they select the top 28

cheerleaders from Years 7-10 who then become the competition team.

This is the first year boys have joined the team, currently they have two boys training with the squad.

The squad won medals, two fantastic trophies, a banner to be displayed in the academy and £125 which will be spent on display boards promoting the squad’s achievements which will be displayed around the academy.

Sian Angell, Head of Girls PE, said: “This means absolutely everything to me and the team. I started this project four years ago thinking it would be an

n LETTERS First thinks its passengers are fools

Could you be a Tynings governor?

WITH reference to the number 16 and 17 buses, there can be no trust in the bus company and these routes.

First thinks that the passengers are fools. How can anyone state that these buses are not being used enough to keep them on the road? The majority of ticket machines are not working properly and don't give tickets. I know for a fact when I used the 16 bus that the ticket machine never ever worked. One day 12 passengers as well as myself were on board - five passengers paid bus fare and the rest used passes. But as the ticket machine wasn't working, there was no record of payment given so what happened to the money and how can the bus company say the buses aren't being used?

A lot of people in the area depend on the number 16 bus to get to the doctors and shops so to withdraw it is mean and thoughtless.

n LETTERS Working together for healthy ‘Ponds WE shall soon know whether we have won our battle to stop McDonald's opening a massive 2-storey, drive-through restaurant on the Fishponds Road. We expect to hear from the government's Planning Inspectorate just after the General Election.

Win or lose we have learned a great deal from a three-year campaign which has galvanised the local community. New friends have been made from which fresh organisations and activities have grown.

It all began with a meeting called by Eastville councillors in a local restaurant, and an online petition started by a local mum.

Our efforts won us a standing ovation from a full council meeting, and the rejection of McDonald's scheme by the planning committee.

At the very last minute McDonald's appealed. Without the benefit of external legal or planning expertise we won the right to be heard on equal terms with the mighty multi-national and the city council.

We compiled our case from all the 495 objections raised by local residents. Those in the community special expertise provides technical support for what turned out to be a seven-day inquiry. Every day Fishponders turned up to support the NoMacInF team and we used social media to keep everyone

informed.

While we wait with bated breath for the outcome we would like to thank Prof Martin Caraher of City University and Dr Franklin Apfel of World Health Communication Associates for volunteering their public health expertise. Thanks also to Labour councillors Sultan Khan, Mhairi Thelfall, and Nicola Bowden-Jones and Conservative councillor Lesley Alexander, the new Lord Mayor, for their steadfast support. And of course to our MP Kerry McCarthy who has been with us all the way, as have the landlords of local pubs who allowed us to meet in their hostelries!

We must not forget the support we received from fellow campaigners against McDonald's as far away as Tecoma in Australia, and Leeds and Newcastle-uponTyne.

Everyone locally who played their part – from door knocking, designing posters and delivering leaflets to organising benefits and taking part in demonstrations – deserves a mention too. And a special vote of thanks goes to the ad hoc committee of devoted citizens who steered the whole campaign through its many phases.

Here's hoping we can all continue to work together for a happy, healthy, safe and prosperous Greater Fishponds.

Tim Bowles becomes our first Metro Mayor CONSERVATIVE Tim Bowles has been chosen as the first regional mayor for the West of England.

He triumphed in the Metro Mayor elections which took place last month in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath & North East Somerset.

Mr Bowles, a councillor in Winterbourne, narrowly defeated Labour’s Lesley Mansell in the second stage of the contest. The other four candidates, Lib Dem Stephen Williams, independent John Savage, Green Darren Hall and UKIP’s Aaron Foot were eliminated after the first round of voting.

The post has been created to allow devolution of some powers, funding and

responsibilities from central Government to the regions.

Mr Bowles will work with the leaders of the three local authorities, Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, Matthew Riddle, leader of South Gloucestershire Council and Tim Warren, leader of B&NES.

Eye Blog . . . with Jonathan Best of Marian Blake Opticians

Hay fever season AS I’ve found out the hard way over the last few months, hay fever can make you miserable. Just when you should be full of the joys of late spring, the plants release their army of invisible warriors. Some people’s faces (including mine!) react to tiny particles of pollen as if they are a harmful invader and an allergic response is unleashed.

This happens because pollen binds to ‘mast cells’ in the eye, causing them to release a chemical called histamine. This substance makes the eyes red, itchy, watery and swollen and you may have clear, stringy discharge. This is known as seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, also known as ‘Hayfever’. If you’re like me and it seems to happen every year, at least you can make ready. Here’s how: Do not stop and smell the roses Avoid contact with the source of your allergy. If it’s pollen you’re allergic to, this means you’ll just have to avoid going anywhere where there is air! You can try staying indoors with the windows shut, monitoring the pollen count on the internet and plan your activities accordingly. If this is all too unrealistic (and a bit strange!), you can at least ensure you use the air conditioning in the car, to circulate the air internally. Wash your hair and hands often and wear close-fitting sunglasses when outside to act as a partial barrier.

Damp dust your home with a wet cloth as often as you can.

Don’t rub it in Whatever you do, don’t rub your eyes; you’ll make things worse and wish you hadn’t. Eye rubbing releases more histamine, the substance responsible for the itching in the first place. Blink twenty times instead, sit on your hands and recite Greek verbs, anything to distract yourself!!

Nice and cool

Laying a clean flannel soaked in cold water will reduce swelling and redness and give temporary relief.

You can use ocular lubricant drops, also known as artificial tears, as often as you need to. Preservativefree is best for allergy sufferers and if you refrigerate them, they’ll feel nice and soothing when you put them in. The lubricant will wash out some of the pollen whilst helping to stop pollen sticking to the eye.

Ask your optometrist There are some medicated antihistamine eye drops available without a prescription. These work quickly but do take the advice on the label seriously. Some can only be used for seven days or your eyes will go red again.

Mast cell stabiliser eye drops are available with or without a prescription and may be used for longer periods. These take between five and 14 days to take effect so don’t expect the immediate relief you get with an antihistamine. If you have hay fever every year, start using a mast cell stabiliser a couple of weeks before the season. Drops combining antihistamines and mast cell stabilisers can be very effective but are available on prescription only.

If you’re a contact lens wearer, see me for some advice before using drops. It may be you can continue to wear your contact lenses or change to another type of lens for the hay fever season. Sometimes, wearing daily disposable lenses can be helpful.

In grandmother's footsteps...

THE unique relationship between grandmothers and their grandchildren will be explored in a creative project based in Fishponds.

Called Grandmother’s Footsteps, the initiative involves workshops based at the Kingfisher Cafe.

Over tea and cake, grandmothers and their grandchildren will share stories and then work together to make various memento craft items.

Project manager Pippa Robinson said: "It's a lovely local, creative, community project.

"We will be encouraging the grandmothers to share memories with their grandchildren and to work together to create a patchwork, collage, book or embroidery giving life to these memories.

"Work created will then be exhibited at an event on October 8 to celebrate National Grandparents Day." The project, which will run at the Kingfisher Cafe on

n VET BLOG MANY dogs and cats suffer itchiness at some point in their lives, some more than others. It can be caused by a variety of problems such as parasites, bacterial infection or allergies. Itchiness can flare during certain times of the year or can be persistent. Late spring and early summer are often the worse times of year.

Problems occur when harmless allergens in the food or environment are mistaken by the body for dangers and cause mast cells (cells involved with immunity) in the skin to release histamines which cause the skin to inflame

Pets are often very uncomfortable when they are itchy and scratching can also lead to secondary skin infections, often requiring shampoos or antibiotics and anti-itch medications to calm the skin. It is important to seek veterinary advice if this happens as established infections can be very hard to clear.

Allergies can be triggered by a variety of allergens such as meats and cereals, mites and also pollens. During June we are marking Pet Allergy Week by offering reduced cost allergy tests for the whole month. Tests run on a blood sample can detect reactions to a variety of common allergens such as beef, chicken, a variety of pollens and allergens in the house. The results come with a list showing

n PLANNING First we had the metro mayor elections and now we are about to go to the polls for the general election. Is it any wonder planning expert Chris Gosling has election fatigue?

READERS of a certain age may recall a cult hit American comedy called Soap. At the start of every episode there was a recap of the story so far. The explanation would always end with: "Confused? You will be!" Confused we indeed were by the election campaign for the metro mayor.

Six candidates with apparently the same agenda - to improve the things that they would be given the opportunity to improve - housing, transport and training/ skills. I watched the televised debate as being probably the best way to get an idea of what was at stake here.

Unfortunately I heard very few ideas at all, other than an apparently bizarre scheme to rebuild the M32 underground as a cure for air pollution. As it transpired, this plan was not so far-fetched as Bristol City Council was indeed investigating that possibility.

Confusion We now know that Tim Bowles will be the metro mayor for the West of England region, aka Avon minus North Somerset. Confusing in itself. Although he is nominally the 'man in charge' he will achieve nothing without the agreement of Marvin Rees as elected mayor of Bristol and the leaders of South Gloucestershire and BANES councils. Or maybe he will have the final say.

One of the things that did emerge from the TV debate was that the people of the West of England needed someone who could build bridges with other politicians – the mayor and other leaders being from different parties although that situation is always subject to change. Yet more confusion. This messy political reality was somewhat played down prior to the election.

Time It is a done deal now, but it is worth reminding ourselves why three of the four councils decided that a metro mayor was necessary in the first place. At a time of continuing austerity, the metro mayoral budget was trumpeted as being £30,000,000. This is on top of the existing local authority funds from central government, although those seem to be reducing further.

It turns out that this £30,000,000 will be annual budget for each of the next 30 years.

Serious money, but what will it achieve in terms of transport, traffic, housing and training over the period in which the metromayor's performance will be judged? I suspect precious little, even though £120,000,000 can obviously buy a lot. Crucially, it cannot buy results on day one. A new layer of government has been added, which has the advantage of being stripped down, funded direct from Westminster and carries executive powers. The luxury it does not possess in order to achieve its aims is time. And yet many of the problems to be resolve are long-standing.

between Bristol and Bath.

This measure would no doubt in the short term alleviate the clogging traffic on the ring road, but that would be most to the benefit of residents of South Gloucestershire, rather than the region as a whole. However my point is not a narrow political one. If the metro mayor follows through on this aim, it would be an incredible achievement to get a new junction built and linked to the ring road before he is up for re-election. Although a subsequent metro mayor would be likely to be bound to complete it, I can't help thinking that all these elected officials are in place partly to 'get things done' but also to distract attention from their failings of the national government to make such things happen in the first place.

The mayors and metro-mayors of the country are democratically elected, but their brief appears to be to meet unrealistic local demands and expectations on behalf of central government. This will lead to local dissatisfaction and an easy target when a head needs to roll: in short, being metro mayor looks to be a thankless task.

Latte for work... Pair go into business with coffee van HIS love of motor vehicles is well documented - in fact he writes about them for our sister paper Downend Voice.

But Andy Laurence won't so much be racing his latest acquisition but selling coffee from it.

In a joint venture with Nick Brooks, who lives in Fishponds, the pals have invested in a CitroĂŤn 2CV which boasts everything you need to make more than 1,000 cups of coffee a day.

Andy said: "We both love coffee and were talking about starting a mobile coffee business last year.

"We decided to go for it at Christmas and engaged with a company to build a converted horsebox coffee trailer that we designed, right down to the type of treatment for the wooden worktops. Sadly, the company let us down eight days before we were due to take delivery and we

were stuck with no business and all the groundwork laid.

"The 2CV appeared on eBay the very same day and whilst it wasn't what we set out to build, we loved it and it was already a functioning coffee van."

The van boasts two coffee machines with two grinders, two sinks, two fridges and enough capacity to serve more than 1,000 coffees in a day.

Andy said: "We've had training to make our coffees the best they can be and we've now secured a 5 star hygiene rating.

"We're doing events weddings, barmitzvahs, festivals and we're booked for Heathfest.

"We buy our ingredients locally including coffee from Extract, cakes from Cakesmith's and milk from Bruton's."

THE range of educational choice in East Bristol has expanded in the past couple of years with the introduction of a state-funded Steiner school and a Montessori nursery locally.

In addition to some excellent provision provided by multiacademy trusts and at more than one children’s centre, Rozey Days Montessori nursery is attracting lots of new families to the area.

Even the royals send their child to a Montessori nursery - Prince George goes to Westacre Montessori – and now we have our own, right here in Fishponds.

Rozey Days on Lodge Causeway has been started by Rozey Din, a trained Montessori specialist.

The approach focuses on developing independence in children and is child-led. This means children choose what they play with, for how long and, where possible, direct their own time and pace. The activities are ageappropriate and available to help children develop their curiosity and explore the world.

Some nurseries direct the play of children, for how long and enforce routines and structure.

This helps some children feel very safe. Maria Montessori believed in a different approach.

Different it is. Firstly, it mirrors a home. The nursery offers families a different type of nurturing care that focuses on the child. It feels like a house not an institution. The rooms feel rather empty when you walk around them and this is deliberate; it encourages the children (and adults) to instigate the play together. spaces full of activities, like one’s own home (if you haven’t managed that rotation of toys approach yet, which I haven’t.)

You’ll find lots of space to roam and small wooden toys, a small real life tortoise (yes, really, an actual tortoise), a garden full of curious shaped objects and a few pieces of climbing equipment. You see children of mixed ages playing together and asking questions of each other. When my daughter was visiting, she spent the better part of half an hour playing with a large bobbin and string.

The children eat lunch and snacks together. They wash up the

dishes after themselves. They go to Forest School together. You’ll find no behaviour charts. The Montessori approach to discipline is to help their child fix their problem. If the child has scribbled on the wall, they themselves wash it off with a bit of help from the staff who were so lovely that I imagine the children actually really do this.

I can hear my mother’s opinions about this style of education as I write, but having visited and spoken to parents whose children have been there all year, it is working: the children are thriving, developing independence and imagination.

What is fantastic is that it serves Fishponds’ diverse community of families. It’s not for every child perhaps, but how brilliant that we have this option on our doorstep.

n NEWS Members of St Stephen's Drama Group are turning their attention to comedy following their sell-out pantomime

Cue much hilarity as group plays for laughs A DRAMA group is presenting a comedy offering following the sell-out success of its Christmas panto.

St Stephen's Drama Group was delighted after tickets for the festive Bluebeard sold like hot cakes. But thoughts soon turned to their summer show - and they're lightening the mood with a comedy extravaganza.

Featuring a double bill of one act plays, the group will start off with Corner’s Last Case, written by renowned playwright Martin Ward.

The comedy murder mystery revolves around the hunt for the notorious Butcher of Baker Street and reveals the internal strife of the local police force.

For the second helping of humour, the group will perform And the Bride Wore… by Cheryl Barrett.

Set in an upmarket bridal shop, the play features family squabbles, personal insults and the mud slinging between two families who hate each other but are brought together by a family wedding.

The drama group are trying a new format of two plays instead of one as they want to include as many members as possible in their productions.

Chairwoman Caroline Ball said: “We have come a long way from the early days of scraping by. Now, we are able to bring so much to the local area by doing something we all really enjoy and I hope it shows in our performances.

"As with any show we do, we have all worked really hard, but judging by the responses to

our last show, Bluebeard, the audiences love and appreciate it.

"Our success has meant that more people want to join in the fun and we’ve recently had to open up a waiting list for new members.”

The Comedy Extravaganza runs from June 15 to 17 from 7.30pm at St Stephen’s Church Hall, Church Road, Soundwell, Bristol, BS16 4RH, with refreshments and raffle during the interval. Tickets are £6 and can be purchased via www. ststephensdramabristol.co.uk

n NEWS THE smiles say it all - the cheer squad Bristol Starlight have done it again! The cheerleaders, who meet in Bromley Heath and Frenchay, and are aged from six to ten, won two titles and missed out on a third by just one point at a UK Cheerleading Association competition in Gloucester.

The younger groups meet on Mondays and Wednesdays in Bromley Heath and those aged eight to ten meet on Fridays in Frenchay. There is also a preschool group for children from three and half upwards that meets on Monday afternoons in Bromley Heath.

n GARDENING SOMEONE said to me this week that you’re not really aware of the lack of rain until you have a garden, and how we missed the rain during the first few weeks of May. My pond is several inches lower than it was in March and the water butt hasn’t been full for as long.

Where the ground hasn’t been mulched well it’s starting to bake hard, something that I’d expect in the height of summer, not in May. But as I sit and write this, the heavens are open and we are once again getting the soaking that all of my plants have been longing for. Certainly my sweet peas are taking a while to hobble off the mark this year, I’m hoping that this recent wet spell will encourage them to get a move on. Down at the allotment everything is also looking a bit sluggish, but again, with a bit of heavy rain it will all begin to look a lot more like I’d expect in a few weeks.

This time of year always gives me a false sense of expectation as I imagine that after the initial growth spurt that happens in young seedlings, they will all have carried on at the same pace. What I forget is that in a month it will all look very different. Watching a plant daily for any changes is a fool's errand and I should look away for a few weeks to appreciate how grand it’s all getting.

This year we took on a new plot at the allotment after our original half plot reached capacity, long before I’d even thought about where the pumpkins and other squashes were going to get planted. Luckily there was one available, very near to our first plot and a reasonable size.

The downside is that to get to the useful soil, we first have to clear couch grass and bindweed from the entire area, there is almost nothing that isn’t bramble, invasive grass, or four layers of decaying carpet. After several trips to the rubbish dump and a few hours strimming and weeding, we seem to be making headway, and although it’s looking exceedingly dishevelled, there is definitely more order to the chaos. I’ve great plans for what we’ll do with it and there are already some plants brightening up one corner, and even a few overflow vegetables in the emerging raised beds. But we’ll not be rushing anything as there is a monumentous task ahead and it’ll feel overwhelming if we try.

When taking on something like this, whether it’s a big garden or a small allotment plot, the secret is to tackle it slowly. A few hours here and there, but regularly to keep up the momentum, will have a bigger effect than going at it hammer and tongs one weekend then leaving it for a month. If you can spare a few hours a week then you have enough time to produce something very impressive, if you’re prepared to give it a while.

Certainly when acquiring a garden you should give it a

year before you make any major changes, to give it time to show you what it’s got. Until there has been a full season, there’s the chance of removing some of your best plants in favour of something less mature that may not be perfectly suited. It will also allow you time to see what everything will look like at every point in the year. You may have something that looks underwhelming now that will be a showstopper during the summer. And never lay a fake lawn.

The garden show season is in full swing now and by now I will have been to Chelsea last month, unfortunately too late to write about here. There are many others and open gardens in the area so please take some time to visit them either through the RHS or the National Garden Scheme.

I find that there is a wealth of inspiration to be found and often some bargains to be had too. If you can’t tear yourself away from your own garden then you can get on with some of these June tasks.

• Plant out the last of your summer bedding plants now that there is absolutely no chance of frost • Plant up hanging baskets • Lift and divide snowdrops, Bluebells and other spring bulbs

now that the foliage is dying back • If you have some space now that things are getting planted out, start to sow some biennials for next year • Towards the end of the month, after hardy geraniums have finished flowering, cut them back hard to promote another flush of flowers later on • Stake and support tall perennials to protect them from wind damage, and stop them flopping over • Harvest lettuce and radishes regularly, and keep sowing more to keep them coming • Clip hedges such as box and privet if it’s needed but leave larger hedges as they may have nesting birds in them • Tie in climbers that are now putting on a lot of growth, try to keep climbing roses as close to horizontal to promote new stems

Charity is making work fun

Hello everyone, This is the first of a regular monthly column about PROPS (Providing Opportunities and Support). We are a small, local charity based at the Vassall Centre in Fishponds.

We support adults with learning difficulties to engage in workbased activities.

We operate a social enterprise printing workshop, where our students are involved at each step of the way, from designing, printing and heat-pressing, right through to going on deliveries, generating and sending invoices.

We can print on clothing, banners, stickers, signs and much more.

We have a PROPS stall where we sell our handmade products, such as cards, chutneys, soaps, candles and home-grown plants.

As well as creating the products, our students enjoy packaging and pricing them up, and then interacting with customers and

handling the money. We are always looking for new outlets to sell our products and events to hold our stall at.

We have a lot of gardening projects at the moment, with a market garden in Hawkesbury Upton, Adeline’s Farm in Tetbury, an accessible allotment at Thingwall Park allotment, as well

as our own polytunnel and garden at the Vassall Centre. On top of our chutneys and jams, we plan to sell soup boxes in the autumn with our vegetables and recipe cards.

After a call out for toiletries, we received a huge number of donations to distribute to local care homes. Thanks to all the Fishponds Voice readers who donated. A very special thanks as well to the lady who donated dozens of old lampshades. We are

using the fabric to make bunting for our allotment! We are always looking for local people, businesses and organisations to link with. If you could volunteer, or offer work experience to any of our students, please get in touch.

We are gearing up to our biggest event of the year: the Bristol to Bordeaux cycle challenge, sponsored by Bailey. 70 riders and 25 support staff are signed up to cycle our ‘Classic’ 300 miles over 4 days, or 500 miles for the ‘Extreme’ route! Four of our students are taking part in the ride this year, and they are busy training and getting their fitness levels up. FIVE Year 6 children (and their teacher) from Glenfrome Primary School in Eastville have passed the rigorous selection process and have been selected to take part in the CBBC show Top Class.

The children had to complete an application, answer some tricky questions, and even have a Skype interview. They found out they were on the show during SATs week!

The children are being flown to Glasgow for the filming on

Tuesday 26th May. The show is a children’s version of University Challenge. Tomos, Sumeya, Ridwan, Jenkin and Noah are very excited and quite nervous!

Head teacher Inger O’Callaghan said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for our children. We are so delighted they have got through to the filming.

"They are a very talented bunch and we wish them luck!"

The team will be accompanied by their teacher Jess Rosser.

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH JUNE is here and brings with it that most exciting of events... the Wonder Woman movie!

Many of us will be fans I am sure, after all who doesn’t love a superhero? June also brings with it an event that has been creating a stir in recent months (but not for that long) and that is our General Election. Some of us may feel more excited about this than the Wonder Woman movie, others may have very little interest in politics and I imagine many of us falling somewhere in between.

Over recent years I have observed a growing move in our politics to seek out the ‘personality’ that can lead our country, believing that if we vote for the best strong, charismatic, trustworthy personality we will have found our hero and all will be well. We all like a superhero but, no person is ever a perfect superhero, most superheroes have imperfections built into their character and the seemingly ‘perfect’ Prime Minister will be the same. In fact no one person can lead a country in Isolation, it will always require a team and a significant one at that.

A superhero might not be right We all crave a superhero. Jesus’ followers were no different, often nudging Jesus to tell them who of them was the greatest, the most important.

Jesus' reply was always the same “Whoever would be first will be last and whoever is the least will be the greatest”. This is Jesus the Son of God; who washes feet, dirty, smelly mud- and scum-covered feet, calling us to be servants of one another. We may crave a superhero but what we need is a servant of the people, a true servant.

As Christians we believe we live in a now and a not yet, a world where we are called to pray daily “your kingdom come, your will be done” and to act daily to see the values of God’s kingdom lived out.

Our hopes for our coming election should be that we elect a party, not one person, that we believe desires to serve us all. In Mathew’s gospel Jesus commends those who have lived the way he

hopes we all would, explaining; “For I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink, I was a stranger and you invited me into your home, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you cared for me, I was in prison, and you visited me”.

These are issues that matter to the God we serve and should therefore matter to us. Jesus is explaining that whenever we do this for one another we do this for God. What better way to seek to serve than to vote that such values would form the cornerstone of all we do in this country? If we are considering not using our vote I would encourage us to do so as each and every voice, even just one voice, matters and can make a difference when joined with other voices. And if we are people who pray I would invite us to join in praying for all parties and their members for wisdom in how to best serve those who have no power or ability to serve themselves.

Football festival WALLSCOURT Farm Academy put on a spectacular fun football festival for schools in their area.

This included fun activities for all ages, and parents, carers and families were also invited to take part.

The football festival, for children in Years 2 & 3 pupils, involved seven-a-side teams from St Michael’s, Begbrook Primary Academy, Frome Vale Academy and Wallscourt Farm Academy.

The aim of the festival was

for pupils to have a fun kick around with no pressure. It was not a tournament so there were no winners or losers.

Organiser Kate Wiggan, Teaching Partner in Oak Learning Zone at Wallscourt, said: “I want children to enjoy their football, have a fun time and also give them the opportunity to take part whatever their level. I would also like to thank all parents who turned out and supported this event.”

Team champions for the fourth year running

Kai leads his team to victory KING'S Oak student Kai Stenner took his team to victory after he had the honour to captain Swinton Town Academy FC in a tournament in Canada.

The under 13s tournament in Calgary included teams entered from various parts of the country and was made up of two groups of four teams with the top two teams competing in the final.

Kai, a Year 8 student, was appointed captain for the whole tournament and final, which they won, beating Bonivital FC 2-0.

Kai said: “This means a lot to me not only to be picked for the team but to be selected as captain, which means they think of me as a leader. I really enjoyed my stay in Canada. To win makes me really proud."

MEET one of the most successful football teams in the history of Mangotsfield School.

These lads have been together since they started at the school in Year 7 four years ago and have won all the local competitions for their year group every time.

Last month, they became the champions of Bristol for the fourth year running, beating Bedminster Down 9 - 2 in the Year 10 final. The goals came from Max Williams (4), Ryley Towler (2), Bailey Sloper, Oli Hulbert and Joe Beardwell (1).

Also for the fourth time in a year, the boys became champions of Gloucestershire in a contest involving more than 80 schools.

They beat Archway School 8 - 0.

Joe Beardwell and Max Williams each scored three with the other goals coming from Bailey Sloper and Ryley Towler.

Their crowning achievement was winning the Woodcock Shield at Ashton Gate on May 23.

Head of PE Tristan Hawkins said everyone at the school was incredibly proud of the team.

"We realised early on that they were a special group - and they just keep getting better and better.

They are unbeaten in all of Bristol and Gloucestershire and they are role models for younger students," he said.

Two of the boys are already on the books of Bristol Rovers and one's at Bristol City.

Blog 40 – Hard work pays off MAY was a month that was so busy inside and outside of the wonderful world of chiropractic for me. It started with a patient of mine who is a landscape gardener with a bad back called Andy. He has been coming in to see me for the last couple of months with a low back disc injury and is now well on the mend through a combination of traction, gentle alignment, soft tissue work and exercises.

We managed to get him better despite not taking time off the heavy manual work that he does each day from putting fence posts in, to laying patios and planting trees. Instead we discussed many ways in which he could adapt his work to make his life easier and reduced the repetitive stress on his back. There are many lessons in Andy’s work adaptions that could spark ideas for everybody’s lives.

Firstly and with a word of caution we decided on a getting a low support only to be used for short periods of high low back stress like loading his truck with patio

slabs. Low back supports should not be worn for long periods as they can weaken the back. Next we discussed the importance of doing any heavy lifting with a second person like a labourer, halving the stress and making jobs much quicker. When I asked him about the other common major stresses that hurt his low back he described hammering in fence posts. When I pushed Andy for a solution he explained that there was an electric drill that can bore the hole for the fence post taking out the huge amount of force needed to hammer it home but it was expensive. When we compared how much money he would lose for a day’s work, let alone a week or month’s work due to back pain the expense seemed far less for a tool that could help install thousands of posts in double quick time! Finally and with undoubtedly a large price tag, Andy suggested to me that he could get his truck converted to a ‘tipper’ truck saving him hours of back breaking shovelling of material with just a satisfying push of a button. Like I said over the last couple of months of helping Andy with his back I have come to know

physical adaption and will power that these guys have is humbling to watch. It is an honour to have worked alongside them helping them achieve a level of greatness that surpasses anything that I have seen in football, rugby or athletics.

It was fitting that the 4 times world champion Magnús Ver Magnússon was the referee and presented the winners medal to former soldier Mark Smith who lost his leg after being shot 7 times in a live training exercise. Mark deservedly won but there were heroes and real stories everywhere.

On a sad note this month our family lost it’s patriarch when my Grandad, my mum's father, passed away peacefully in his bed aged 90. You were a wonderful Father of 3, Grandfather of 7 and Great Grandfather of 8. A true Officer and a Gentleman…you will be missed x

him very well and when we are not laughing about stories from rugby tours he showed me photos of some of the work he has done and needless to say that he has just finished laying a rather lovely limestone patio out the back of my house! Thank goodness his back was fine. I would never have lived it down if he hurt it again doing my patio! So if anybody needs some landscaping or a new patio then please let me know!

After completing a training event for the strongest disabled man a couple of months ago it was now time for the real thing.

I met a chiropractic colleague from London and together we travelled to east Kent for the event.

Britain’s Strongest Disabled Man is an event like no other. It is very similar to Strongman competitions held around the world except the athletes have also had to overcome a disability like losing a leg in an accident or military operation, having cerebral palsy or being visually impaired.
