COUNTRY COMES TO TOWN AT THE AUTUMN DECORATIVE FAIR 2ND-7TH OCTOBER 2012 BATTERSEA PARK, LONDON SW11 4NJ

T

he Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair is well-known for its wide choice of period design, from fine Georgian and Regency pieces to midtwentieth century originals.

The Autumn Fair, to be held at Battersea Evolution (the Marquee), Battersea Park, London will highlight in a special foyer display the varied styles of country furniture and accessories that are always popular with buyers.

Items in the display will include oak and country furniture from the seventeenth to twentieth centuries (farmhouse tables, settles,

dressers, stick back chairs and stools), naive paintings and pastoral pictures, textiles and linens, folk art and treen (household objects carved in wood such as bowls, trenchers, spice caskets and candle boxes), and a host of items one might find in all rural homes from country house to manor or artisan’s cottage. All pieces will be for sale, and are drawn from exhibitors at the Fair. It will be curated by exhibitor Martin Murray, an oak and country furniture specialist and member of BADA. There is a definite trend at present for good traditional furniture. Good painted furniture continues to be popular, and buyers

are currently favouring rarer items with paint in original condition that command strong prices.

Those with a penchant for more modern design will find an excellent selection; around 25% of furniture and accessories at the Fair date from the Art Deco period to 1980, and encompass affordable and decorative glassware and ceramics, lighting, clocks, and of course a wide range of furniture, mainly

from Italy and Scandinavia. Whilst many twentieth century items for sale at the Fair are signed or attributable to well-known designers and artists, which appeal to collectors and connoisseurs, pieces are also selected by exhibitors for their general style and quality offering good value for money to those looking purely for decoration. BATTERSEA POWER STATION

SOLD for £400m to Malaysian bidder

B

attersea Power Station, the four-tower listed London landmark, has been sold to a consortium led by Malaysia’s SP Setia for £400m, beating bids from about 15 others from as far afield as Brazil, China, South Africa and Kazakhstan. Joint sale advisers Ernst & Young and Knight Frank exchanged contracts earlier this month on the sale of the 39-acre site on the south bank of the River Thames, the last prime piece of central London real estate available for redevelopment.

“The Brits were noticeable by their absence from the bidding process,” said Knight Frank’s Stephan Miles-Brown, adding London real estate had become the target for overseas cash amid the financial turmoil of recent years. “In the 1980s, the Chelsea Harbour scheme was developed not far from Battersea Power Station,” he said. “Bovis Homes (BVS.L) and P&O were behind that. Times have changed.”

The consortium of SP Setia, Malaysia’s leading property developer, plans to redevelop the crumbling but protected site into homes, offices and retail. They also plan to build a tube station on the premises that will connect to the Northern Line.

Current planning consent is for 3,500 homes and 1.7m sq ft of office space.

The Malaysian team plans to keep the chimneys despite suggestions the protected site would be more financially viable for a developer if it was demolished, a move that would have provoked a strong backlash among the British public and politicians

due to the affection many hold for it. Other consortium members include Sime Darby and the Employees’ Pension Fund of Malaysia.

SP Setia was named preferred bidder in June, since when the consortium has been carrying out due diligence on the four-chimney brick power station built in two stages in the 1930s and 1950s.

Malaysian buyers have bought a string of large office blocks in London’s main financial district in recent years and the Shard skyscraper, the newest addition to the city’s skyline was funded by the state of Qatar. Overseas buyers have invested 15.8 billion pounds in London offices since 2010, 64% of the total, CBRE (CBG.N) said, and foreign ownership of the City financial district stands at 52%, according to Development Securities (DSC.L).

The decaying edifice on the south bank of the River Thames, which is Europe’s largest brick structure with white art-deco chimneys, has been a recognisable silhouette on the London skyline for 80 years.

Rival bidders included Chelsea Football Club, which looked at the site as a possible replacement for Stamford Bridge.

Its architect was Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed London’s famous red telephone boxes. It also featured in the Beatles’ film Help!, Pink Floyd’s Animals album and more recently in the Batman film The Dark Knight.

Salon Privé is delighted to be able to unearth this rare collection of Gulf cars from Adrian Hamilton’s country house in Hampshire, and bring them to Syon Park on full public view together for the very first time.

These cars, instantly recognisable from their iconic sky blue and orange livery, stretch right back from 1967 (the 1967 Mirage was the first Gulf-liveried

In a year when Her Majesty The Queen celebrates the 60-year Diamond Jubilee, the Mercedes-Benz Gullwing is also celebrating its own 60th anniversary in the public eye, and will be on display in all its glory at Syon Park this September. Named because of its unusual “Gullwing” upwards lifting doors, the car was initially conceived as a purpose-built racing sports car and went on to achieve immediate iconic status – as evidenced by 2011’s equally striking tribute SLS, also exhibited at Salon Privé in 2012.

The Capricciosa for example, features cooked ham, field mushrooms, artichokes, and pitted black olives over the traditional San Marzano tomato, mozzarella fior di latte and basil base. Prices will range from £6.25 to £10.50.

GUILDFORD BOOK FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2012 PROGRAMME Organisers of the annual Guildford Book Festival are setting the stage for another memorable celebration of literature. During the ten days packed with events, audiences can expect to see some of Britain’s finest writers and household names discussing everything from fiction, history and biography to comedy, current affairs and crime. Children can also look forward to some colourful events.

The line-up includes writer and comedian Sandi Toksvig, ex-ITN newscaster John Suchet, actor and comedy writer Ben Miller, BBC Arts Editor Will Gompertz and writer, navigator and explorer Tristan Gooley.

The programme also features hugely popular crime writer Peter James, author and queen of daytime television Judy Finnigan, botanist, gardener and broadcaster James Wong, comedy writer and novelist Kathy Lette and novelist and stand-up comedian Jenny Eclair.

The opening event of the 2012 Festival will feature restaurateur, food writer and journalist Prue Leith who will present her autobiography Relish – My Life on a Plate, a fascinating and candid account of her colourful life. To conclude the day, an event in the company John Suchet, now recognised as a leading authority on Beethoven, arguably the world’s greatest composer. In his new illustrated book he brings fresh understanding to this difficult and complex character.

The Festival will also turn its attention to the art world. Recently voted one of the world’s top 50 creative thinkers

by New York’s Creativity Magazine, BBC Arts Editor and ex-Director of the Tate Will Gompertz promises a dazzling tour of modern art that will change the way you look at it forever. He will introduce his new book, What are You Looking At? 150 years of Modern Art in a Nutshell, and explore what modern art is, why we either love it or loathe it and why it is worth so much money.

Continuing the art theme, Henrietta Garnett and Sue Bradbury will be discussing the private lives of the Pre-Raphaelites. This event is a must for art lovers and anyone who enjoys a good story of friendships and feuds, jealousy and love. Then in the surroundings of the Watts Gallery’s ‘Dickens and the Artists’ exhibition, Lucinda Hawksley will be talking about the life of her greatgreat-great-grandfather, Charles Dickens.

Fiction, as always, is at the heart of the Festival. Having championed so many now-famous writers, Judy Finnigan gives us her own first novel, Eloise, a compulsive and haunting story of a woman drawn ever deeper into a friend’s secret past, while bestselling author Salley Vickers, author of Miss Garnet’s Angel, introduces her beguiling new novel, The Cleaner of Chartres. The ever popular Readers’ Day, which celebrates fiction and is a great chance to meet an eclectic mix of authors, will be held on Saturday 20th October. This year it features, among others, Clare Clark, Sadie Jones, Roma Tearne, Katharine McMahon, Steve Mosby and Andrew Martin.

Crime fans have always been richly rewarded at the Festival and this year is no different. Among the line-up are bestselling crime writers Ann Cleeves, Peter James, Tania Carver, Nicci French, Sophie Hannah and R J Ellory.

Comedy at the Festival comes courtesy of three household names who will each offer a unique introduction to their latest novels – Kathy Lette (The Boy Who Fell to Earth), Jenny Eclair (Life, Death and Vanilla Slices), and making a special appearance at G Live, Sandi Toksvig (Valentine Grey).

The University is the venue for the Festival’s celebration of science, with particle physicist Ben Miller (one half of Armstrong & Miller) on – in his words – the ‘best bits of science’ and Professor Jim Al-Khalili on science’s greatest enigmas.

Also featuring in the programme are six historical authors who offer new insights into the culture and history of Japan, the Middle East and England. In Samurai, Geisha, Ninja bestselling author Lesley Downer and historian and travel writer John Man unveil the mysteries of these Japanese cultural icons, while Tom Holland covers the collapse of Roman and Persian power in the Near East, and the emergence of Islam. Closer to home, Harry Mount presents his witty and accessible book How England Made the English and explains how our national characteristics – our sense of humour, hobbies, favourite foods and our behaviour with the opposite sex – are all defined by our nation’s extraordinary geography, geology and climate. Audiences will also have the chance to meet and hear the Sunday Times bestselling author of Roman historical fiction, Lindsey Davis, along with Simon Scarrow, himself a great chronicler of the Romans.

Other Festival highlights include a special event at Polesden Lacey with William Shawcross, who will be talking about the witty, vivid and revealing letters of the Queen Mother, never before published, and An Audience with Mary Berry at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. To mark Alan Turing’s centenary, the Apollo Theatre Company, featuring former Guildford School of Acting students, will stage a dramatised reading of Hugh Whitemore’s compelling Breaking the Code. For budding writers, there is a range of writing workshops, including ones on self publishing, writing erotic fiction and how to plot.

Finally, for children, there is a chance to join Puffin as he celebrates his 45th birthday on Saturday 20th October at the Radisson Blu Edwardian. Join favourite children’s author Andy Stanton and illustrator Emma Dodd with books, balloons and birthday cake galore. Celebrations continue on Saturday 27th October with a Puffin Post Family Day at The Electric Theatre, with events and fun for all the family. Meet the authors, discover new books, try your hand at drawing and storytelling, and find out who has won the national Puffin Birthday Card Competition.

As part of the Festival’s ongoing community involvement, author events will also be staged in local schools & HMP Send.

HAM HOUSE & GARDEN a 400-year-old treasure trove waiting to be discovered and one of a series of grand houses and palaces alongside the River Thames.

Ham House was built in 1610 for Sir Thomas Vavasour, Knight Marshal to James I. On Sir Thomas’s death in 1620, the house passed briefly to the Earl of Holdernesse, before becoming the home of William Murray in 1626. Murray had been the ‘whipping boy’ for the future Charles I. He took punishment on behalf of the young prince, and formed a close bond with him, growing up to share his taste in art and architecture. Between 1637 and 1639, Murray remodelled the interior of Ham. He created the Great Staircase and a suite of sumptuous rooms on the first floor: the Great Dining Room (now the Hall Gallery), the North Drawing Room, and the Long Gallery with its adjoining picture closet. The decoration is intact in most of these rooms. The remaining part of Murray’s art collection gives us a rare picture of fashions under Charles I. When the Civil War broke out in 1642, Murray naturally joined the Royalist cause, and was created 1st Earl of Dysart for his loyalty. He died in Edinburgh in 1655.

The Duchess of Lauderdale

Ham passed to Murray’s eldest daughter, Elizabeth. Her father’s titles were conferred upon her in 1655, after his death, when she became the Countess of Dysart. She was described by contemporaries as beautiful, ambitious and greedy. In 1648, she married Sir Lionel Tollemache, 3rd Baronet, of Helmingham Hall in Suffolk, a wealthy and cultivated squire.

They had eleven children, of whom five survived to adulthood. Renowned as a political schemer, she is said to have belonged to the Sealed Knot, the secret organisation supporting the exiled King. Even before Tollemache’s death in 1669, Lady Dysart was rumoured to have formed an attachment to the ambitious John Maitland, 1st Duke of Lauderdale, Secretary of State for Scotland. Following their marriage in 1672, they extended and refurnished Ham as a palatial villa reflecting the Duke’s status as one of the most powerful ministers of Charles II. Much of this luxurious interior decoration survives today, along with rare textiles, furniture and paintings.

The Tollemache dynasty

After the Duke’s death in 1682, the Duchess had to curb her extravagance and was eventually reduced to pawning her favourite pictures and jewellery.

Elizabeth died at Ham in 1698. Ham House and the Dysart title then passed 32 SEPTEMBER2012

to her eldest son from her first marriage: Lionel Tollemache, 3rd Earl of Dysart (1649-1727). Lionel took little interest in the house but by contrast, the 3rd Earl’s grandson and heir, another Lionel, the 4th Earl, carried out major structural repairs in the 1740s. He filled many of the rooms with new furniture and paintings. Most notably, the Queen’s Bedchamber, furnished by the Lauderdales for Charles’ Queen, Catherine of Braganza, was converted into a first-floor drawing room. The mahogany chairs, gilt pier-glasses and tables, and tapestries after Watteau survive in situ. The 5th Earl partially re-landscaped the garden and was succeeded in 1799 by his brother, Wilbraham, who immediately made improvements inside and outside the house. The 6th Earl was a generous patron of Reynolds and Gainsborough.

He created the striking Yellow Satin Bedroom, but most of his changes were antiquarian in spirit, enhancing Ham’s 17th-century character.

Restoration & renewal

Little changed at Ham between the 6th Earl’s death in 1821 and 1884, when William, 9th Earl of Dysart came of age. Sixty years of benign neglect had left the house and its contents in urgent need of repair and Lord Dysart embarked on a thorough restoration campaign. The roof was renewed, electricity and heating installed, and much of the 17th-century furniture repaired. The 9th Earl died in 1935, when Ham passed to his second cousin, Sir Lyonel Tollemache. Sir Lyonel and his son, Cecil, gave Ham to the National Trust in 1948. Discover the fine interiors and historic gardens that make Ham an unusual and fascinating place to visit. Please note: for conservation reasons, some rooms have low light levels. The beautiful gardens include the much photographed Cherry Garden.

It features lavender parterres flanked by two berceaux (vaulted trellises) of pleached hornbeam and a statue of Bacchus at its centre. Walnut and chestnut trees in the outer courtyard act as roosts and nesting sites for a large flock of green parakeets. The formal listed avenues are formed by more than 250 trees.

It is said that the Duchess still haunts the house today, along with a number of other ghostly inhabitants.

op icon Kylie Minogue is to headline this year’s BBC Proms in the Park in Hyde Park – the annual Last Night of the Proms spectacular broadcast live on BBC Radio 2. Now in its 17th year, it is Britain’s largest outdoor classical music event and a rousing finale to two months of the finest music-making at the BBC Proms.

An honorary British national treasure, Kylie Minogue is one of the world’s most successful female singers, and she’s currently celebrating her 25th anniversary as a recording artist. Kylie has shown an astounding capacity for reinvention which has earned her a huge fanbase around the globe.

Here was a special moment to give thanks and praise to something British that we deem the envy of the world. Zara Phillips received her medal from her mother Princess Anne, who competed in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. Her father, Captain Mark Phillips, was a member of the British three-day eventing team that won gold in Munich in 1972.

Bronze medallist Russian Olga Zabelinskaya instigated a breakaway with 25km to go and Armitstead and Marianne Vos of the Netherlands went with her, eventually leaving the Russian behind. In a race for the finish Armitstead attacked Vos on the Mall but the Dutch rider had too much power and took gold in a thrilling rain-soaked 140km race.

After easing through his first round clash, Muhammad lost in the quarter-finals to end his hopes of winning gold or silver. However, with the man who beat him - Nicolas Garcia Hemme - advancing to the final, Muhammad entered the repechage where he beat Arman Yeremyan 9-3 to land a bronze.

Dancing the night away as the party finally ends If Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony was a dramatic statement of everything everyone wanted London 2012 to be, then the closing ceremony on Sunday 12th August was a joy-filled celebration of the triumphant way in which so many of the athletes those hopes have been realised.

A scale model of London took centre-stage wrapped entirely in newspaper, including Tower Bridge, The Gherkin and the London Eye. Athletes appeared and filled each segment of the iconic Union Jack flag, celebrating their achievements to constant cheering and clapping from the crowds.

Q: DO YOU FOLLOW ANY KIND OF SKINCARE REGIME? I use a Dermalogica facial wash and - this is going to sound really stupid - but I always moisturise because chlorine really does dry out your skin. I’m doing say 25 hours a week training and I think about 15 of those are in the pool.

Q: WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE IN YOUR SWIM KIT BAG? A shower gel like Adidas Ice Dive is the key thing, just because I’m constantly in and out of chlorine. It’s quick and easy to rub all over your body and your hair just after you get out the pool. I’ve become immune to the stench of chlorine because I’ve been diving for 10 years now but that, teamed with Ice Dive deodorant, is the best way to make sure I don’t smell of it.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR GROOMING MUST-HAVE? For me, it’s my hair wax - I use TIGI Bed Head. I’ve kind of got to the stage where I can just style it without even looking in the mirror. But when I’m in the pool, it just has to be natural because there’s no waterproof hair wax as yet.

Q: HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR TRAINING OR COMPETING? Shaving foam! But not to shave with. We rub it on our shins and then wash it off, so it gives us better grip when we hold onto our legs for a dive.

USA Olympic swimmer Natalie Coughlin revealed competing make-up free forced her to “focus on skin and well-groomed brows” to look her best. But she isn’t the only person championing the power of the brow.

With solid structured brows high on the beauty agenda, it’s time to acknowledge them as a feature of your face to rival your eyes or pout.

Eyebrow expert Shavata recommends getting your brows professionally shaped every two to three months: “Visit a professional brow technician to keep the shape consistent and groomed,” she advises. “You’ll need about 10 days of brow growth from your last plucking in order to restore them professionally. However, if you want a full reshape they will require a minimum of a month’s re-growth.” Big eyebrows won’t be for everyone. A good brow technician should match your shape to your age and lifestyle. Once your perfect arches are in order you can keep new stray hairs at bay with regular at-home tweezer grooming.

Maximise brows

Far from just a fashion statement, the shape of your eyebrows can change the shape of your face, lift the eye and take years off you.

“Brow shaping can create the illusion of improved facial balance and proportion,” reveals Daxita Vaghela, brow and lash specialist. “Arched shape brows are perfect for a square or heart face shape, oblique shaped brows are perfect for a round shaped face, straight brows are great for an oblong shaped face and angular brows suit triangular shaped faces.”

If you’re unsure, a natural curve along the brow bone suits most people.

Emphasise your eyebrows to their full potential with a brow pencil or powder in a shade best suited to your colouring. “Apply with short, feather-like strokes while holding your skin taught,” Daxita advises. If any wayward brows need taming, use a clear gel for flawless brows.

Big is beautiful this season but the on-trend bushy brow isn’t always achievable. You might have fair hair, naturally sparse brows or an unhealthy tweezer addiction. Eyebrows also thin and lose definition with age but help is at hand for those in need of some brow TLC. “If you want to return to a healthier, stronger looking brow, it is possible,” says celebrity eyebrow threader, Jo Pallan. “Take supplements with vitamin A, C, B3 to stimulate hair growth. Gently brushing the eyebrows in the direction that they grow with a brow brush twice a day can also stimulate hair growth.”

Use a brow oil to ensure hairs are well nourished and don’t become brittle. Once solely dedicated to promoting lash growth, enhancing serums for eyebrows are now on offer. Use daily and the follicly-challenged will be rewarded with brows that wow.

Tracie Giles, semi-permanent make-up artist says: “To keep the perfect shape or for a little cheat, all those fine extra strokes can be applied with permanent make-up so all you then need to do is tweeze and trim. “It can be used to fill in sparse brows, augment brows or even lift them.” Semi-permanent brow treatments typically last for around 18 months before fading when a colour refresher may be required. Eyebrow tinting is another low-maintenance option to take your eyebrows from barely-there to beautifully defined.

Around the time I meet the Parisian heel designer, he's fighting a court case against a major high street brand which has 'imitated' his trademark red sole design. at Louboutin look started out 20 years ago as an experiment when he painted a sole with red nail polish, but it's gone on to 62 SEPTEMBER2012

"It immediately became a sort of sign of recognition, a signature, and women would come to me and say, 'It's like a vacuum for guys!'", Louboutin tells me.

The first ever retrospective exhibition by French shoe designer, Christian Louboutin, at the Design Museum,

crosses his legs after warmly shaking my hand and offering me a chocolate biscuit.

Louboutin, 49, is walking on cloud nine right now: there's a range of cosmetics in the pipeline for next year (Louboutin Red lips, anyone?), he's the top judge for Martini's Royale Casting (the new face of the brand will bag 12 pairs of Louboutins), and a retrospective exhibition at London's Design Museum is currently celebrating his two decades of shoe wizardry.

From towering heels to studded sneakers and bejewelled pumps, it's like the best shoe shop in the world, only with 'Don't Touch' signs at every stiletto turn and security guards positioned near the wall of thigh-high boots.

"It was hard to choose two hundred!" Louboutin exclaims when I ask him to pick out his favourite pair featured in the exhibition.

"I mean some shoes, like the Guinness shoes (with heels constructed from actual cans) we no longer have - not one pair."

He goes on to reel off the names of shoes as if they were his children, struggling to single out 'the' style deemed most iconic by Louboutin aficionados.

"I mean lately the Pigalle..." he says, before hesitating, "probably.

Between the Pigalle and the Lady Lynch - or the Fifi, which has a really high heel with a round toe."

So what it is about Louboutin's vision that ensures his shoes are red carpet regulars, fashion industry favourites and capable of commanding upwards of £395 for a classic pair?

"Balance. Proportion. And the cleavage," Louboutin replies succinctly, using shoe designer speak for the amount of toes flaunted.

"Shoes can do a lot for a woman. ey can give this extra sense of femininity and empowerment."

Louboutin's fascination with shoes dates back to when he was just 11 or 12 years old. He recalls discovering a drawing at an African art museum near his parents' apartment that displayed a woman's high heel vividly crossed out in red. "I sort of discovered creativity through that drawing," he says.

His now inspirational image of the Fifties-style stiletto, which was intended to safeguard the parquet floor, was a sharp contrast to the Seventies trend for flat or chunky-heeled shoes.

Louboutin's love of performance, cabaret and the showgirl later fuelled his glamorous vision.

Although he doesn't name one specific muse, he regularly links up with burlesque performer Dita Von Teese at events. "Nobody wears shoes like a dancer on stage," he says.

He cites art, architecture, landscape, travel and artefacts as areas from which he draws inspiration.

Louboutin packs his suitcase and seeks out a hot climate to design his summer collection and, similarly, a cold bolt-hole to find focus for autumn/winter inspiration. e designer goes to extremes to achieve the right working environment. "I have a house in the country in France and it's often cold but if it's not cold enough I just turn the heat off then I'm sure to be frozen.

"I'm quite influenced by the light and by the heat, so it's easier to imagine a super-light sandal when it's boiling outside than furry boots and vice-versa."

Just as Louboutin's shoes range from flats to six-inch heels, his personality is full of light and shade, humour and sincerity.

Discussing how foot sizes have become bigger during his career, he remarks: "I was just going up to a size 41 (UK 8), but now I have to go all the way to 43 - and then there's the trannies, which make me go all the way to a 47!"

Although Louboutin creates flat shoes for men and women, it's the towering stilettos that have brought him worldwide fame.

"People say I am the king of painful shoes," he says. "I don't want to create painful shoes, but it is not my job to create something comfortable.

"I try to make high heels as comfortable as they can be, but my priority is design, beauty and sexiness."

have often said that we should emulate the prudent wealthy people of Tudor times who invested their money in tangible things like land, property, decorative arts and items of intrinsic value such as gold and silver. e production of artefacts made of the latter was, by the middle of the 16th century, strictly controlled and as proof of this the Goldsmiths’ Company had instituted a system of marking all items so made which revealed with individual stamps on the surface the quality of the material, the identity of the maker, the place where it was tested and the officer in charge of the testing. As it was an annual office this mark changed each year and, taking its form as a letter of the alphabet, became known as the Letter of the Year Mark or more recently simply the ‘Date Letter’. Originally it was called the Assay Mark - from the French word assai meaning examination - introduced under a statute of 1478 wherein the Goldsmiths’ Company was made liable to a fine if it marked any substandard silver. (A point here is that in this context the term goldsmith applies to silversmiths as well.) In 1545 the fourth mark was added, depicting a lion walking to the left with its right paw raised and known as the Lion Passant. It became known as the Sterling Mark as it took the place of the earlier King’s Mark to denote quality while the latter became recognised as the mark of the London Goldsmiths’ Company and Assay Office. e reason for the change was two-fold. Firstly by the mid 1500’s the coinage had become debased by approximately 50% which meant that a silver crown (5 shillings) had only half a crown’s worth of silver content. To prove the maintained sterling value and quality of wrought plate, that is items made of silver, the Lion Passant mark was introduced.

Secondly, by this time and starting as early as 1378, Assay Offices had been established in various parts of the country, particularly at York, Newcastle, Lincoln, Norwich, Bristol, Salisbury and Coventry.

silver should be guaranteed to be of the sterling standard and marked as such it was impractical to expect silversmiths from these disparate places to travel to London to have their wares marked and so each adopted a different emblem to equate with the Leopard’s Head of London.

All these towns and cities used a letter of the alphabet to identify the Assay Master but they did not all use the same sequence of letters. London used the first twenty letters in the alphabet excluding ‘J’ and when the run was exhausted the typeface or the shape of the background ‘shield’ was changed. In 1560 Queen Elizabeth I restored the value of the coin, a move which set Britain on a steady course to recovery for the best part of 100 years only to be decimated by our civil war (1642 – 1649.) Among the results of this were vast amounts of earlier wrought plate being melted down to pay for it, which in turn caused a shortage of silver for manufacture. Over time this affected the monetary supply to such an extent that by the 1690’s further legislation was necessary.

Until the reign of Charles II all our coinage was made by hand, stamped by hammer and die and the edges trimmed with shears.

Although trade was often conducted through barter or credit, cash transactions were

common enough and so, before parting with your coins it was only human nature to snip a little bit of the edge of each one. ese little snippets all mounted up - the original ‘every little counts’ – but it had already become a capital offence to clip coins and, with a fake die, forge your own money.

However with an increased demand from working silversmiths these scraps could command as high a price as the coins they had been cut from, and with less risk of detection of the crime.

So a new type of coinage was called for and a mill was set up in the Tower of London and powered by horses to produce perfectly circular coins. As a belt -and-braces measure an inscription or legend was engraved around the outer edge thereby making illegal clipping virtually impossible. But the authorities failed to see the problem with having both old and new currency in circulation at the same time.

Obviously people hung on to the new with its full face value money’s worth, while spending and clipping - the old. Clearly the old coinage had to be withdrawn and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of May 1697 were the final days for collection at the ten furnaces specially built behind the Treasury, which was then at Whitehall between the Banqueting House and the river. For weeks great piles of coins, mostly half face value and barely recognisable had been collected, melted down and cast into ingots. In one instance some £52,000 of face value coins were melted to produce just over half that amount of silver worth.

But distribution of the new coins was slow and while all this was going on another factor became evident; the value of coin clippings to silversmiths had to betaken out of the equation. is was done by raising the silver content of wrought plate to a level above that of coin. Not by so much as to make the material too soft for use and durability but sufficient to be detected by the assay. e figures were a raise from 92.5% pure to 95.84% pure.

It was known at first as the New Sterling Standard but – as it

was denoted by a stamp showing the figure of Britannia – it soon became known as the Britannia Standard. is mark replaced the Lion Passant mark and in London the Leopard’s Head was replaced by a mark showing a Lion’s Head in profile, facing to the left with a jagged neckline as if torn from its body. Heraldically this is called ‘erased’ and so the Britannia Standard in London is denoted by the Britannia mark and the Lion’s Head Erased. In all other towns and cities the Lion’s Head Erased is used in addition to their town mark. From 1697 until 1720 the Britannia Standard was obligatory but in the latter year the economy in England had recovered sufficiently for the government to restore the old Sterling Standard while retaining the Britannia Standard as an option which it remains to the present day.

In the early days of the maker’s mark, people were less literate and initials meant little or nothing to most, so symbols were commonly used. ese might be a miniature image of the shop or tavern sign where the silversmith had his workshop, such as leathern bottle or a swan, a star or crescent moon.

By the 17th century we see the first two letters of the surname being used and by the beginning of the 18th century the silversmith’s initials gradually became the norm.

From the 1720’s it can be said without question that the manufacture and sale of English silver was the most proficiently run and tightly controlled of all industries, with the welfare and benefit of manufacturer, supplier and purchaser held in equal esteem. e four marks as described filled every requirement and would surely have survived unaided save for a change in taxation in the 1780’s and the Convention Hallmarks introduced in the 1970’s, nearly two hundred years later.

When we’ve dealt with them we really will get onto the silver from the Channel Isles, Scotland, Ireland and other desirable categories where the present day equivalent of the prudent Tudor person should still be putting their money ■

BATHROOMS ARE PROBABLY THE HARDEST-WORKING AREA IN A HOUSE THESE DAYS AS WE DEMAND MORE OF THEM THAN EVER BEFORE. To be successful, they should work as a practical space for the daily washand-go as well as being a haven dedicated to wellbeing and pampering.

“Long gone are the days when the bathroom was simply a functional space. People are moving away from the Victorian-style basic bathroom and towards the modern, spacious spa feel,” says Anthony Howells, bathrooms buyer for B&Q. “They want the clean lines, minimalism, wet rooms and walk-in doorless showers, enhanced by chunky floating yet stylish fixtures such as units and frosted glass, which they see when they stay in hotels and want to replicate.” He predicts that, where space allows, the popularity of free-standing baths, becoming more sculptural in shape, will continue to grow as they provide a focal point in large bathrooms.

Experimenting both with design and colour is a growing trend, according to Rita Rendo Castro, sales and marketing manager at Catchpole & Rye. “People are becoming increasingly design confident, with more opting to make a statement with a brightly-painted bath or patterned tiles,” she says. “The bathroom is an ideal space to try out new colours in a small area which wouldn’t necessarily work in a larger living space. Dove grey is a chic but safe choice for walls and gives a neutral base which can be enlivened by other colour choices. Salmon pink and yellow are one of my favourite combinations as they’re elegant but have a warm, summery feel.”

AUTUMN NATURE’S TIME FOR PLANTING

I

am showing my age when I start to reminisce about what things were like when I was starting out in the horticultural industry. However it is true to say that when I was learning my trade, the given wisdom at that time was that the autumn/ winter was the best time to plant and establish plants. With the advent of large garden centres and the marketing of gardening in general, this wisdom was quite quickly turned on its head. The

fact that a significant proportion of gardeners are fair weather ones and will only come out in the spring and summer, combined with the obvious advantage that plants naturally look better when they are growing, meant that the advertisers found it easier to promote planting in the spring. With tender plants that is factually correct, however with most others it is not! It is particularly frustrating when I speak to gardeners who, as a

result of this marketing, believe that once autumn has arrived they need to hold off planting until the spring.

These are followed in approx October by deciduous plants, which need to enter dormancy before lifting as root balls or bare root specimens. Very dry weather or unusually warm weather can delay lifting, by a week or two, growers delaying so that plants are not put under additional stress. Finally during late October, field grown trees begin to be lifted, the delay with these again is to minimise stress on the larger plants. Lifting of trees and shrubs will usually continue throughout winter, unless freezing temperatures interrupt, until March or April, when rising temperatures often can put a stop

to lifting almost overnight, due to dramatically increased stress levels on the plants.

Why was autumn traditionally promoted as the best time of year for planting and why is it better than spring, many of you will ask! Put simply, a plant of any description provided it is not tender, will during the cooler months of the year remain virtually dormant above ground.

Below ground is a different matter, whereas air temperatures will be dropping regularly below the temperature threshold for growth, which is approx 5’C, the soil temperature will remain

several degrees higher and also remain fairly constant allowing root growth to continue unabated.

Most years it is only during 1 or 2 weeks that soil temperatures drop low enough to stop root growth, usually in February.

Autumn planted hedging, for example, will be putting all their energy into root growth, as the foliage isn’t growing, whilst also suffering minimal stress due to water loss, whereas spring planted hedging will be trying to actively grow foliage thus reducing the energy available for root growth, as well as suffering stress from heat and water loss,

thereby slowing establishment.

Awaken walls

Banish thoughts of over-elaborate decoration for walls; these are the backdrop for a pared-back scheme and should be decorated accordingly.Minimal change is needed if you’re lucky enough to have exposed brickwork, polished or aged plaster, or smooth walls which just need a skim of paint. TIP Using muted and sombre colours will create a soothing atmosphere and the perfect background for brighter colour or areas of pattern. If your home lacks natural light, opt for a paler neutral scheme, but dark walls will throw into relief lighter coloured furnishings and objects.
