Posh Pawn Prestige Pawnbrokers in Weybridge were recently featured in a Channel 4 documentary, Posh Pawn. We go behind the scenes to find out more about how it works and why business is booming! By Jess Contomichalos month period to pay back the loan (with interest) or if you can’t pay it back you can reinstate the loan and just pay back the interest due. The tale of upmarket pawn was documented recently by Channel 4 programme, Posh Pawn. It made such fascinating viewing that Channel 4 are seriously considering making an entire series based on James original shop in Weybridge and his new venture, a second branch in affluent Richmond.

f you take a stroll down Queen’s Road (known locally as Upper Weybridge) you will find a variety of designer shops, boutiques, cafés and galleries. Incongruous as it may seem, nestling amongst them is Prestige Pawnbrokers who specialise in luxury goods including fine art, wine watches, classic cars, jewellery and of course gold. If you look closely into this select neighbourhood you will discover that many people are asset rich but in the recent recession, cash poor and that is the reason that Prestige seem to be kept busy all year round! Prestige Pawnbrokers was the brainchild of no nonsense business man and ex property developer, James Constantinou. With an eye for a profit, James saw a gap in the market and set up Prestige in 2009. James soon discovered he was being offered a range of products that not only included the more usual items such as jewellery and watches, but also a range of more unusual items such as antiques, works of art, fine wine and even classic cars. James’ vision has proved unstoppable He and his team now operate a growing empire that has tapped into a seemingly endless supply of wealthy customers who have been perhaps turned down elsewhere but are in need of a quick cash injection. What makes Prestige so appealing is the fact that James doesn’t do credit checks as he has the item as his security and he will also offer a seven

14 NOVEMBER 2013

‘We just never know what will happen from day to day which makes it very exciting. The other day I got offered a helicopter and last week I acquired a Lamborghini. We get all sorts of stories that go with the items ranging from business start ups through to one woman who pawned jewellery to pay for a private detective to follow her straying husband!’ explains James. ‘Obviously, the story ends best for us when we can help people and they come back for their goods, but sometimes it doesn’t go that way so I always have to consult my experts before loaning any money against items I’m not sure about. I’ve had rare coins, Hermes Birkin bags, a Lichtenstein as well as some first edition books which were hugely exciting as they were signed’, smiles James.

Having cannily set up his business in leafy Weybridge, James has found he has a constant stream of affluent customers with something to pawn. Typical of his dynamic business acumen, James has now set up a new store in Richmond. ‘Richmond is a great venue for Prestige, it is very cosmopolitan, close to London and like Weybridge, it is home to a bank of celebrities, rock stars and millionaires, so I am hoping that we will soon see the same returns as our Weybridge branch but hopefully bigger diamonds, faster cars and maybe a yacht or two as well!’ smiles James. Late night shopping evening – Tues Dec 10th

shtead Village Traders is an association of business owners concentrated around “The Street” in Ashtead Village. For nearly 20 years the AVT has promoted the local shops, held regular events and liaised with local authorities/organisations regarding matters concerning the main shopping area of Ashtead. For the last 15 years the AVT has been led by Bryan Elphick who has also been selling houses in Ashtead since 1968. This year Bryan retired as Chairman and was succeeded by his son Richard Elphick, not that it is a hereditary position! Simply that Richard has undertaken most of the practical arrangements for the last few years and it was decided that this way the most seamless way for the association to continue serving the community.   The AVT’s main annual event is the Christmas Late Night Shopping 16 NOVEMBER 2013

Evening which this year is being held on Tuesday 10th December. The Traders welcome customers into their shops for FREE seasonal hospitality .   Milners will again be welcoming Father Chistmas to their store to meet all the children to find out what they want for Christmas. He always brings his presents along with him  and it’s all free! Parents  can enjoy wine and nibbles while the kids enjoy themselves.   Outside The Street is buzzing with activities such as Street Performers, Fun Fair Rides, Carol Singers, Choirs, food stalls and more!  And you can warm up with a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie at Cairds Estate agents.  This is an extremely popular night and serves as a very pleasant start to the festive period. The Council have agreed to free parking in the village in the afternoon to support the event and there’s

extra parking spaces in the car park behind Elphicks Estate Agents and Bicknell Interiors.   The Ashtead Village Traders also organise the Christmas decorations in The Street which are the envy of other local Villages because these areas are not catered for by the Council but organised and paid for by the association. Flags are also erected at relevant times of year to decorate the Street including recently for the “Tour of Britain” cycle race that came through the Village. Other things such as supporting the Rotary Club of Ashtead with its superbly popular Village Day and talking to the council and other interested parties about important issues such as the proposed new Tesco retail unit all come under the auspices of the Ashtead Village Traders and are undertaken by volunteers dedicated to keeping our Village lively and relevant for the future!

A winter wander

With beautiful winter views, a traditional children’s trail and a cosy fairytale cottage, Christmas is a very special time at Claremont Landscape Garden in Esher. by David McClenaghan Photographs above and left: Sue Judd

18 NOVEMBER 2013

he tranquil retreat of Claremont is a wonderful place to relax at any time of year, but when winter arrives the garden undergoes a magical transformation. As the leaves thin the low winter sun opens up views across the pleasure grounds, creating the perfect picturesque landscape to get you into the seasonal spirit. Claremont is open every day except Christmas day, so it’s an ideal place for the family to walk off the excesses of the holidays. Enjoy a gentle stroll around the lake, or if you’re feeling more energetic (or want the children to run off steam) collect a trail sheet from the entrance kiosk as you arrive and see if you can hunt down all the clues to claim your prize. Nestled in a secret woodland glade not far from the edge of the lake you’ll discover the Fairytale Christmas Cottage, charmingly decorated for the duration of the festive period. Young and young at heart alike will enjoy the fun selection of traditional toys and games to play with inside, as well as an enchanted post box for sending letters to the North Pole. Take along your wish list or write one on the day using the pens and paper provided, then post your letter to make sure it reaches Father Christmas in time.

After you’ve explored, why not indulge all over again by sampling the mouth-watering new winter menu in the recently renovated café? Tuck into delicious seasonal treats such as venison stew or warm mince pies and wash it all down with a refreshing glass of mulled wine. If you need to pick up a few last minute stocking fillers then you’ll find a small range of gift ideas dotted around the café too. Colder weather doesn’t mean you have to stay cooped up indoors, so throw on your coats and scarves and discover a great place to visit on your doorstep this winter.

More information Claremont is open daily, 10am-4pm in winter (closed on Christmas Day)

…and he’s made of chocolate!

hristmas is a magical time at Bachmanns,” says Chris Bachmann of award-winning Bachmanns’ Patisserie. “It’s the only time of year we get to make our favourite seasonal specialities, fresh baked mince pies, Stollen, Christmas puddings and our Swiss Christmas ‘guetzlis’. All are made to my Dad’s recipes and take me instantly back to my childhood.” ‘Dad’ is legendary Swiss pastry chef, Ernst Bachmann, and the recipes have been developed and perfected over a 45 year career that spans The Dorchester, The Swiss Centre in Leicester square, and the Intercontinental on Park Lane before opening the first Bachmanns’ Patisserie at Thames Ditton in 1989.     We are sitting in Bachmanns second patisserie and chocolaterie on Church Street, Weybridge.  Celebrating its first anniversary, the shop exudes the elegance of Switzerland’s finest patisseries with beautiful counters filled with gateaux, pastries and chocolates, made by Bachmanns’ brigade of first class patissiers.  You can enjoy a coffee and cake in the café area, with a window onto the kitchen where pastry chef Wayne Harris and his team are hard at work to Bachmanns’ very exacting standards.    “We opened quietly in November 2012, after an intense 3 months redevelopment and I am very pleased to say that we have been busy ever since. “ explains Wayne. “It has been a really exciting year for the team and the people of Weybridge have been very welcoming.  We’ve taken on two more apprentices taking our staff to twenty between here and our Thames Ditton shop. We’re expanding our chocolate production and development kitchen, so we’re really looking forward to 2014.”

24 NOVEMBER 2013

My tour continues upstairs as I follow Chris to the first floor and the Chocolate laboratory. The warm, rich aroma of chocolate and the soft, mesmerising hum of machines continually stirring and agitating the chocolate fill the room. Chocolatier Dan Ellis is putting finishing touches to a batch of handmade chocolate couverture Santas. “Each batch is painstakingly hand painted, hand brushed and then multi-layered, which improves the snap of the chocolate so it is lovely to eat,” explains Dan. “It is exacting work, but our customers really notice the difference in the eating.” I try a piece and he’s right - the chocolate breaks crisply before it melts in the mouth. It’s very fine chocolate and each Santa is slightly different, handcrafted with real personality that is the Bachmanns’ hallmark.   In another corner, Bachmanns’ latest product is ready to be photographed: finest chocolate and almond Rocher Christmas trees, dusted with icing sugar.  Absolutely exquisite and delicious, these are surely the perfect Christmas gift and guaranteed to fly off the shelf.   “We have the classic recipes,” says Chris, “But the beauty of chocolate is that you can always keep things fresh.  Our last Christmas creation was our award-winning Chocolate Christmas Pudding, a chocolate shell filled with our handmade chocolate truffles – much imitated, never bettered!”  The chocolate laboratory is designed with the flexibility to run a range of chocolate masterclasses.  ‘We held our first class last month, and it something we hope to develop further in the future.’ says Chris.  Please form an orderly queue! Refreshingly, Bachmanns limits its festive period to Advent, so its fabulous Christmas range is available from 30th November.     Bachmanns Patisserie 32 Church St, Weybridge, Surrey KT13 8DX 01932 820247

This year’s Guildford Book Festival, which launched with much loved comedienne Jennifer Saunders and closed with best-selling author Sebastian Faulks, was a great success.

uring the twelve days, thirteen venues in the town hosted 50 events which featured authors from a range of genres including fiction, wartime and social history, interiors, comedy, sport, food and biography. Much loved children’s authors also featured in the star line-up including Darren Shan and Marianne Levy. The buzz it generated was palpable and audiences were thrilled to be able to meet and hear their favourite authors. The runaway successes were events with Matt Dawson, Eric Lanlard, Ian Botham, Rachel Joyce, Pam Ayres and Joanne Harris, as well as The Coffee Shop Book Club, Readers’ Day, Decorating with Colour and the Literary Lunch. Other great ‘hits’ were Austentatious and The Wimpy Kid Show. However there was also much praise for some of the other speakers who captivated their audiences such as Judith Flanders who talked about Victorian London and Harriet Tuckey who spoke of her father’s role in the first successful ascent of Mount Everest. A key highlight of the Festival was witnessing the launch of The Mistletoe Bride and Other Haunting Tales by multi million

international best-selling author Kate Mosse. A packed Guildhall saw a silhouetted Mosse reading an excerpt from the book to start the event, followed by a very lucid hour-long introduction to the inspiration behind her first short story collection. In addition to the public events, there were two longstanding initiatives which again proved very successful – the Prison and Schools Programmes, both aimed at encouraging reading and writing. Martina Cole, who has worldwide sales in excess of 10 million copies to her credit, spent an afternoon with inmates at HMP Send discussing her work and promoting writing and reading as a means of expression and enjoyment. This theme continued in the vibrant Schools Programme which saw some 1500 children engage with authors in classrooms in Guildford and beyond.

With early reports indicating that 2013 is going to be a vintage year for both quality and quantity Denbies is anticipating a record year , which is reflected in the energy, enthusiasm and celebration that surrounds the harvest. ‘The grape picking experience really does provide a day of pure escapism, one of last year’s participants summed it up beautifully when they described it as instant therapy!’ commented one of the vineyard team. The RGS aims to encourage the growth of intellectual curiosity and creativity and to inculcate a life-long love of learning in the boys. Accomplished members of staff tailor their teaching to provide a stimulating, inspiring education which fulfils boys’ need for pace, variety and healthy competition. Boys are given the space and opportunity to mature and develop at their own pace and, most importantly, they enjoy a happy and challenging education in a supportive, positive environment. The RGS is consistently one of the top five boys’ schools in the country at both A Level and GCSE: in 2013, over 80% of all grades at A Level were achieved at grades A*/A with 31 boys securing three or more A* grades; over 93% of all GCSE results were passed at A*/A with 94 boys achieving straight A*/A grades. The School is extremely proud of its Oxbridge record. In the last six years over

The School provides state-of-the-art facilities conducive to performance at the very highest level as well as to nurturing young talent and enthusiasm. Recent purpose-built developments to the site include the Art School, Auditorium, Music School, Sixth Form Centre and Sports Hall, all within the last ten years. In addition, the School has twenty-acre grounds at nearby Bradstone Brook and it is not unusual for the RGS to field over twenty teams on a Saturday, especially in the hockey and rugby seasons. RGS boys have achieved national and international honours in a wide variety of sports recently including rugby, sailing and shooting. The full extra-curricular programme encourages teamwork, leadership, and self-reliance. Opportunities abound through the Combined Cadet Force, Explorer Scouts, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and various other outdoor pursuits. There are three standard admissions points to the School: First Form (Year 7, 11+), Third Form (Year 9, 13+) and Sixth Form (Year 12, 16+). The annual Open Day takes place on Saturday 5 October 2013 from 10.00am to 12.30pm. Prospective pupils and their parents are warmly invited to meet the Headmaster and enjoy a tour by a current pupil, providing an insight into the rich diversity of the School. No advance booking is required. The School aims to make the education offered as widely available as possible. Generous means-tested bursaries, up to 100% remission, are available as well as academic, art, music and sports scholarships.

As 2013 is the Chinese year of the snake, it is no surprise that the serpent motif is enjoying resurgence in popularity. Both new designers and established houses are finding novel ways to interpret this most ancient of jewellery designs.

he snake is, if you pardon the pun, a most flexible design for jewellery; it naturally forms into a hoop, a spiral or a lariat design. The head can be included or not depending whether a naturalistic or figurative approach is required. The texture of snakeskin allows opportunities for goldsmithing, engraving or stone setting as decorative techniques. In mythology the snake has had a number of different meanings. The image of a snake with its tail in its mouth creating an unbroken circle symbolises eternity while the process of a snake shedding its skin hints at rebirth and immortality. Snakes can represent lust, temptation, fertility, wisdom and both good and evil so there is rarely an occasion where the correctly presented snake jewellery would not be appropriate. So strong is this motif that

38 NOVEMBER 2013

it has become bound up in the identity of several famous jewellery manufacturers, particularly Boucheron in Paris and Bulgari in Rome. Bulgari has used the snake in both its naturalistic and figurative forms since the earliest days of the company. The development of the distinctively flexible ‘Tubogas’ link lent itself to serpentine forms for rings, necklaces and bracelets. One of Bulgari’s most characteristic and enduring watch designs features a dial set into the head of a snake with the Tubogas coils forming the bracelet. One of Bulgari’s latest collections ‘Serpenti’ revisits these themes in both jewellery and watches using both the Tubogas and more segmented links.

A more stylised Bulgari serpent design is shown in their ‘Spiga’ collection. These ribbed and stone-set coils are unmistakably Bulgari but without heads and tails they merely evoke the spirit of the snake without focus on the details – possibly a more versatile option, especially for the more ophidiophobic jewellery buyer. Two stunning examples of Bulgari’s Spiga collection, illustrated in the pictures opposite, are offered in Fellows Antique & Modern Jewellery auction on 5th December. With both a ring and bracelet up for grabs, what better way is there to close the year of the snake and prepare for the Christmas party season, all in one go?

From Surrey

to Marrakesh A journeyman’s tale

nknown quantity is something which I really love.” Craftsman Mark Prouse grew up in Peaslake, Surrey. His early interest in making, art and technology led him to become an apprentice blacksmith, first at a forge close to home in Abinger Hammer, and then just a little further up the road in Woking. The best training a blacksmith can get is known as a ‘journeymanship’, when a trainee smith travels from forge to forge, helping and working with diverse master blacksmiths, often internationally and frequently just for bed and board. Mark took to the road, leaving rural Surrey for adventures abroad. He travelled across Europe and then to Australia, working with eminent blacksmiths. In Germany, he worked with renowned smith Paul Zimmermann for two and a half years. The Zimmermann name is familiar to leading metalworkers all over the world, and Mark is still good friends with the family; Paul’s son Heiner is a Professor teaching art metalwork in Germany, Sweden and the UK. Mark’s broad experience and exposure over many years to the best names in the business, coupled with the cultural influences of various European countries and Australia, led him to become one of the most admired, versatile and successful metal artists working today. Based in Germany, his sculptures of flora, fauna and people reflect his global travels – a fabulous bronze pangolin sits comfortably beside a gold and platinum lionfish, a forged iron gull beside an Aboriginal dreamer. His fascination with complex techniques and a passion for challenging projects bring Mark ambitious clients with unique requests. When fashion designer Jessica Tiegel sent him drawings of a potential project involving bronze and gold, “of course I said ‘Yes!’ The challenge appealed to me, the technical difficulty.” Jessica had explored numerous ways of producing her vision of a metal corset, including modern technologies such as 3-D body scanning, 3-D laser cutting and 3-D printing. With the deadline of a fashion shoot in Marrakesh looming, and concerned about how elements of the design might be joined together, hand-making won the day and Jessica commissioned Mark to produce the corset. Mark had one month to finish the piece. With no time to spare, he embarked on a task that would have terrified many professional makers. As he says, “Sometimes it’s good when you don’t have time to contemplate.” The flat 2-D designs were painstakingly adapted to suit a 3-D human body. Four or five fittings enabled Mark and Jessica to work out a 3-D design that was true to the original concept. Elements were cut from flat sheets of brass and copper. Each piece was individually cut with very fine bandsaws and fretsaws and filed with fine needle files, before being formed and joined with silver solder to gradually build the corset. So many hours of manual work take their toll - Mark describes how the

44 NOVEMBER 2013

skin on his left thumb “took about two months to grow back.” Once the desired shape was achieved, the corset was cleaned, heavily copperplated, brushed, polished again, nickel-plated, brushed in a vertical direction on the outside, gold-plated and finally vertically brushed again to give it a soft satin finish. Mark is full of praise for Jessica’s determination to turn her impressive design into a tangible, wearable creation. “It is an amazing piece. With the gold, it is really stunning. It was a great journey for me – shame it was so short!” The corset was modelled by Barbara Tous of Elite Barcelona, and photographed on location in Marrakesh by Patrick Styrnol. The project has re-connected Mark to his English roots – the corset is touring, and is currently on display at Fire and Iron Gallery in Leatherhead, Surrey.

The Victoria Wing where small miracles happen T

here are fewer things in life quite as fulfilling as having a baby, however for 1 in 6 couples, finding out they may not be able to conceive can be devastating and the beginning of a challenging time in their lives, both emotionally and physically. The Victoria Wing Fertility Clinic is a centre of excellence based at Nuffield Health Woking Hospital in Surrey. The clinic offers a range of expert fertility treatments from pre-conception through to early pregnancy including ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). What is IVF and what does it involve? IVF involves the fertilisation of eggs by sperm outside the body. It was developed over 35 years ago for the treatment of women with damaged fallopian tubes, which remains an important reason for treatment today. However, it is also used when either the man or the woman have problems conceiving naturally due to a number of other conditions, or when the cause of infertility is unknown. IVF treatment consists of a sequence of procedures known as the treatment cycle. With over 20 years’ experience, The Victoria Wing has helped over 3500 children come into the world. The staff are amongst the most experienced in the country with the aim of taking care of your overall

50 NOVEMBER 2013

wellbeing whilst helping you to try to start a family. Their pregnancy success rates consistently place The Victoria Wing amongst one of the highest in the country and are testament to the dedication and skill of their medical team. The clinic also run egg sharing and egg donation programmes. Some women require donated eggs either because their own egg quality may be poor or may no longer produce any eggs. If you are considering or are already going through IVF treatment yourself, you may have the option of sharing half of the eggs you produce during your IVF cycle to a woman needing egg donation. In turn, you will receive your own IVF treatment for free. Alternatively, you can become an altruistic donor which means giving your healthy eggs to another in need. In conjunction with HFEA regulations, donors will be compensated £750. As a donor, you will never meet your recipient but you will probably change their life forever.

The Victoria Wing Fertility Clinic is based at Nuffield Health Woking Hospital. For more Information call 01483 227814.

he Cosmetic Doctors Company are delighted to announce the arrival of Zeltiq Coolsculpting. The first safe and effective non-surgical method of bodycontouring. No scalpels or incisions. No needles or injections. No anaesthesia. No downtime. If you are concerned about fat bulges that don’t respond to diet or exercise. You could be an ideal candidate for Coolsculpting. Coolsculpting will reduce stubborn areas of fat in the tummy, flanks, love handles, chest and inner thighs.

CoolSculpting has applicators that are anatomically designed to optimise results. CoolSculpting has 700,000 patients treated worldwide with high patient satisfaction rates. CoolSculpting is the only cryolipolysis device on the market that has passed rigorous FDA approval. CoolSculpting cannot cause a freeze-burn of the overlying skin. How does it work? Developed by Harvard scientists, who discovered cold can be applied to non-invasively remove fat, Coolsculpting cools fat cells to a temperature that permanently destroys them. Over the next few weeks the fat cells shrink and die and your body metabolises them and naturally excretes them.

What is Coolsculpting? Coolsculpting is a revolutionary new non-invasive treatment that reduces areas of fat permanently. Clinically tested, extensively trialled and approved by the notoriously tough US Food & Drink Administration.

The Coolsculpting machine comes with several different shaped heads that tackle the most common fat-prone areas including the stomach, back, upper arms and thighs. The correct head is applied to the area to create a vacuum. The fat is sucked in and cooled to a temperature that destroys the fat cells, shrinking fat in the area by up to 40%.

Why The Cosmetic Doctors Company? Cryolipolysis procedures should only be undertaken in a medical clinic specialising in non-surgical cosmetic procedures. At the Cosmetic Doctors Company your treatment will be under the direct supervision of an experienced and medically qualified doctor. Our treatments have been evaluated fully to ensure that they are effective and safe.

What areas does it work best on? The ideal candidate is within two stone of their ideal body weight with pockets of pinch-able soft fat on the abdomen, flanks, back, upper arms and inner thighs. One treatment is usually enough to result in a permanent reduction in fat. A treatment plan includes a review after 12 weeks when the fat cells will have fully broken down.

Why Coolsculpting? Zeltiq CoolSculpting is the original device that others are trying to imitate. CoolSculpting has been the subject of over 20 peer review clinical papers.

How long to the results last? Coolsculpting destroys fat cells permanently, so as long as you maintain your weight with a normal diet and exercise, your long-term results should remain stable.

Celebrity beauty secrets are revealed as Lisa Haynes takes a peek inside the personal cosmetics bags of three very famous faces. By Lisa Haynes

ehind the scenes at any magazine photo shoot you’ll find an army of spritzers, groomers and preeners to make sure the cover star looks picture perfect. But how do the celebrities manage once the make-up artists and hair stylists have packed up their kits? Here three of the most sought-after style icons Gwyneth Paltrow, Katie Holmes and Nicole Scherzinger - disclose their personal beauty regime secrets and reveal how they maintain their dazzling A-lister looks.

Gwyneth Paltrow: Creative inspiration for Max Factor What’s your make-up must-have? A good mascara and a little blush really goes a long way. How would you describe your signature look? I love that really cool kind of beachy look - a little bit undone, with a darker, smudgy eye. I like sexy and understated. Do you like to experiment with your beauty? I feel very inspired by women who can wear both strong eye and lip make-up at the same time, but it’s not a look that necessarily suits me. I love a simple red lip teamed with an otherwise bare-looking face. Do you wear make-up every day? 58 NOVEMBER 2013

No, I don’t wear make-up every day, especially if I’m just working from home or picking up the kids. However, if I have a meeting I’ll definitely put on some concealer, mascara and creamy blush. What’s your best beauty tip? I try to look after my skin as much as possible by keeping it fresh-looking through exfoliating and moisturising. I exfoliate my skin about four times a week. Nicole Scherzinger:

Katie Holmes: Face of Bobbi Brown What’s your make-up must-have? I always apply blush in the morning, because I have dark hair and I really need it. How does your look differ for evening? When I’m going out, I apply eye liner on the inside of both the top and bottom lid. What’s your hero beauty product? I love the new Bobbi & Katie palette. It complements different skin tones and the colours go from morning to evening, so it’s everything you need in a day. What’s in your make-up bag? I used to carry huge tote bags with dry shampoo, Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick, and a blush brush but realised I had to cut back. Now I carry a smaller bag with just a makeup palette. What’s your best beauty tip? Bobbi has taught me the importance of blending techniques. You don’t look like you have a lot of make-up on, no matter how many products you use - it never looks cakey. Global ambassador for Herbal Essences What’s your daily beauty routine? Every morning I wash my face with SK-II Facial Treatment Essence, followed by eye cream and moisturiser. The SK-II eye cream is one of my favourite beauty products - it’s just so good. What’s your make-up must-have? All I need is some eyeliner and lip gloss. What’s in your make-up bag? Max Factor Colour Elixir Giant Pen Stick, Diorshow Black Out Waterproof Mascara, Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint, Jurlique Rose Silk Finishing Powder, Herbal Essences Bee Strong Strengthening Spray and SUQQU nail polish. Stephanie Cockroft discovers out her bespoke skincare needs in a session with a high-tech analyser Hands up. I confess I can be a bit slack on the skincare front. So when the chance came to have an in-depth ‘facial assessment’ to show exactly what my skin needs and why, I jumped at it. Mobile Visia is a scan brought to the UK by American company MyChelle, which detects everything the naked eye can’t. The results give ‘scores’ on each person’s skin: spot level, wrinkles, pores, sun damage, texture and redness. MyChelle then recommend products which could improve the results and offers free samples to try. There are two quick flashes, then I’m presented with my report, showing my skin in terrifying detail. Among the results, I’ve got 64 ‘spots’ (including freckles) which I’m told could be reduced with Clear Skin Spot Treatment (£13.50). Despite not being a sun worshipper, I’ve got high sun damage and I’m urged to use Apple Brightening Peel (£23), as well as a moisturiser containing minimum SPF30 to help. For my high level of redness, I’m advised to use Deep Repair Cream (£24) and Apple Brightening Mist (£14). And for my blemish-prone skin, the Fruit Enzyme Scrub (£15.90), followed by a Fruit Enzyme Cleanser (£15.90), should work wonders. My saving grace is that I only have 14 slight wrinkles on my face (I’m still young). The team is so convinced the products will sort out my woes that I’m invited back for a comparative free follow-up scan. The MyChelle advisers explain my results in layman’s terms and also dish out useful tips about general skincare. The cardinal sins include sleeping with make-up, not using an SPF-based moisturiser and using products that don’t match your skin type - which is where Mobile Visia comes in. Granted, I can’t promise I’ll use all these products forever, but at least I’ve got picture-led evidence to show why I should, even though £80 feels quite steep for the analysis. I’ve only been using the products for a couple of weeks and my skin already feels rejuvenated. :: Mychelle Skin Analyser, £80, available at Nutri Centre stores nationwide (020 8752 8450/ :: MyChelle Dermaceuticals range is available from selected Nutri Centre stores and online at

sleeping beauty Banish eye bags and tired skin with a restful night. Lisa Haynes reveals how to reap the benefits of beauty sleep.

ith the clocks going back to signal winter’s imminent arrival, we’re entering a new phase of sleep. Darker mornings are creeping in, making groggy wake-up calls the norm until spring. “Sleep is affected by melatonin levels, which in turn is affected by light and darkness, so the seasonal change causes all sorts of disruption to the body,” explains Dick Middleton, technical director for Schwabe herbal remedies. But if you can get your optimum amount of sleep, you’ll set yourself up for a recharged and revived new dawn. With the restorative beauty sleep fairies getting to work overnight, there’s more to pillow time than meets the eye. Drift off If you’re a sleep under-achiever, stress and anxiety are often to blame when it comes to disturbed nights. One in five people experience difficulty sleeping, according to, and 70% of those are women. “Sleep is not a passive process - you need to respect it and learn how to do it as a skill,” says sleep expert Kathleen McGrath. Besides bulging eye bags, a bad night’s sleep can also start to manifest itself through a tired-out complexion. “A decline in skin quality can be evident if you’re deprived of sleep for more than one or two nights,” explains McGrath. “People who do shift work often tend to have more problems with skin and weight gain due to sporadic sleep.” Don’t clock-watch and panic. “You may not necessarily need eight hours sleep a night - it’s really what

60 NOVEMBER 2013

works for you,” McGrath assures. Herbal supplements can help but need to be taken daily for between two and four weeks before you really see the sleep-inducing effects. Divine dreamland Forget internet shopping and playing games on your iPad in bed. Create the ideal sleep environment so that your bedroom is fit for purpose - many experts advise that it should be reserved for sex and sleep only. “Start by lighting an aromatherapy candle in your bedroom two hours before you are planning on going to bed to give the essential oils a chance to be released into the air,” advises Nicola Elliott, founder of NEOM Organics and qualified aromatherapist. A calming routine combined with pure essential oils is a dreamy double act when it comes to promoting deep sleep. Go to bed with lavender for its proven sedative qualities. “Run a warm, foamy bath with a lavender essential oil and breathe it in while relaxing in the tub. Spritz Tranquillity Bath Foam, your pillow with Organics £20 ( a lavender-based mist, snuff out the candle, and close your eyes while the final layer of essential oils on your skin keep working into the night, keeping you relaxed and in deep sleep.”

:: Benefit The POREfessional, £24.50 ( This balm is lightweight and easy to apply. It made large pores around my nose and cheeks noticeably less visible. Its matte finish minimised my shiny T-zone, doubling up as a primer too.

:: DHC Pore Essence, £28 ( This goes on smoothly, doesn’t clog with foundation and takes shine off on first application. Despite the promise of microcapsules of silica vessels minimising pores, I felt that they were reduced but still visible, even after foundation.

Nature’s time for planting It is strange how people’s view of the world has changed over time. These changes appear to gradually infiltrate every aspect of life.

62 NOVEMBER 2013

ake for instance horticulture, when I was setting out in this trade some 40+ years ago we were always advised that Autumn was the best time of year to carry out planting works, unless the items to be planted were tender tropical types. The reason for this was that we were taught that once plants went into the ground they start to produce new roots and develop a new root system. Again by the term Autumn this actually means in reality the time when the top of the plants are realatively dormant which can go up to mid February on some occasions, although earlier is always best. Root growth will continue until the soil temperature consistently falls below 5’C, which in most years, in the south of the country, happens for only a very short period, if at all. Many people will be surprised to learn that even on the rare occasions when we suffer snow and air temperatures of -10’C, a lot of soils would have barely dipped below 5’C in the root zone, which for large shrubs is generally 40cm+ below the surface. This means that the roots would have carried on growing whilst the rest of the plant is in dormancy, ensuring a better established plant by the spring. This will definitely pay rewards in the coming year as the plants will be able to get growing much quicker, as there are fewer issues with the top growth coming at the expense of the root growth or vice versa.  It is this same phenomenon that heating engineers use for ground source heat pumps, although this is at even lower depths for higher temperatures. The reason why the soil remains significantly warmer in winter than the air temperature is due to its insulation properties.

With the growth in garden centres and container production of plants, in the 1980’s, the emphasis on planting changed to the spring. The reason this occurred was not for the benefit of plants, but as often the case a marketing ploy, garden centres promoting planting at a time when customers showed the greatest interest in their gardens. Views have changed so much in recent times that we are now asked on a regular basis whether it is alright to plant in the autumn, or we are even told that customers will leave it until the spring to plant as it is better for the plants. Unfortunately this is a common misperception. Container production has made it possible for plants to be sold and planted successfully throughout the year. For most plants I would continue to strongly recommend planting in the autumn, particularly for larger plants, if you have the option, as they still benefit from that winter root growth and establishment. Spring and summer planting is fine if you miss the opportunity to plant in the autumn,

but you will need to keep a much closer eye on watering in particular, as the root system will not be as established in the garden! With summer planting you are more likely to come across leaf scorch when the weather warms up very quickly, not necessarily due to not watering the plant, but merely that the small root system is unable to take up the water supplied quickly enough. This type of leaf scorch rarely causes long term harm but can detract from the plant’s interest until new growth is put on. Stressed plants are also more likely to suffer from diseases such as mildew early in the year. Dealing with plants is similar to many aspects of life, preparation is the key. If at all possible if planting can be carried out in the autumn it is recommended, however if circumstances mean this isn’t possible planting later can be highly successful it just requires more careful preparation and execution. Wrap up warm and plant now could give you more time to enjoy your garden in the spring!
