Surrey Wine School, an independent wine education company, is opening in December to run wine courses and tastings for wine lovers in Guildford. All wine courses and tastings will focus on enjoying wine and learning about it in a relaxed, enjoyable setting, and no previous wine tasting experience is necessary. The school will not sell wine and is not affiliated to any wine merchants or retailers.

The sessions suit all levels of knowledge and experience, starting with Saturday introduction courses – a great way of immersing yourself in the subject through a leisurely tasting of 12 delicious wines.

Rare Luger pistol to be offered in auction WEDNESDAY, 12TH DECEMBER 2012 SOTHEBY’S, 34-35 NEW BOND STREET, LONDON W1

avin Gardiner Ltd’s final auction of 2012, of Fine Modern and Vintage Sporting Guns and Rifles. The sale, as always, will have a selection of interesting pistols. Among the pistols will be one of the rarest Luger pistols – only 10 are known to have been made and all have been given to high profile recipients such as President Roosevelt, Hiram Maxim, The King of Italy, Diaz of Mexico as well as the Kaiser Wilhelm II. The example in Gavin Gardiner Ltd’s auction was given to Andre Noel, Governor of Konstanz (on the Swiss/ German Border) in 1946 and is being sold by a member of his family, who now lives in London. It would have been personally inspected by George Luger and the chamber is inlaid with a gold presentation family crest. It is estimated at £15,000-20,000 and only one other is ever known to have been sold at auction.

Gavin Gardiner commented: “I am always delighted to include items in the auctions that have a fascinating story and provenance and this is no exception. The 1902 Presentation Luger Carbine is perhaps the rarest of all Luger pistols and it is thought that as few as 10 (numbered between 9105 and 9115) were built for personal presentation by George Luger himself. This example in common with other recorded examples has the entwined GL inspection stamp indicating that it was personally built or inspected by George Luger himself.”

The auction of more than 200 lots of vintage sporting guns, rifles and shooting accessories, is the only sale of Sporting Guns to be held in the heart of London’s Mayfair and will have a strong section of 12-bore Sporting Guns by England and Scotland’s finest makers.

Often known at the gunmakers’ gunmaker,

James Woodward was formed in 1874 and was acquired by James Purdey & Son in 1948.

The company produced its first over and under example 99 years ago in 1913. A scarce 12-bore sidelock ejector over and under gun, built in 1922 by James Woodward & Sons is estimated at £24,000-28,000.

Also among the 12-bores is a pair of 12-bore Imperial model sidelock ejector guns by E J Churchill, which is estimated at £5,000-7,000.

The sale will include a strong section of accessories and more curious items – which could make wonderful Christmas gifts.

In an Olympic year, the 4th International Wimbledon Music Festival celebrates a ‘Musical World Fair’, filling Wimbledon with music and musicians from around the globe.

T

he Brazilian pianist Christina Ortiz will play music by Debussy and Villa-Lobos, and Chinese guitarist Xuefei Yang will perform both Spanish and Chinese music. In addition, the young Russian super-star violinist Alina Ibragimova will be performing an allItalian concert with her father, double bassist Rinat Ibragimova.

One of the highlights will be the return of the celebrated Russian pianist Mikhail Rudy, who will give the premiere of a new production by the International Wimbledon Music Festival and the Little Angel Theatre of Stravinsky’s Petrushka, combining live projections and puppetry to create a truly interactive and immersive performance.

Since its launch, the International Wimbledon Music Festival has been pioneering new music and on November 24th, the European premiere of composer Benjamin Wallfisch’s Chopin’s Waterloo will be given during the festival’s ‘Gala Concert’.

American soprano Christine Brewer will perform Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder with pianist Roger Vignoles, and a dazzling list of singers including Mark Padmore, Susan Bickley, Malin Christensson, Njabulo Madlala, Robin Blaze, James Bowman and the Gramophone Award-winning Cardinall’s Musick all perform at this year’s festival.

A regular feature is the composer Messiaen, whose Quatuor pour la fin du temps will be performed by the Nash Ensemble, and exploring the conditions under which Messiaen’s great Quartet was composed, novelist and journalist Jessica Duchen will present her play; A Walk Through the End of Time. Alongside this poignant work, ‘cellist Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, who survived Auschwitz, tells the extraordinary story of the Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz.

Other string quartets include the Kopelman Quartet performing works

by Borodin, Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky; and the New Zealand String Quartet who are celebrating their 25th year. Oboist Nicholas Daniel, who was awarded the Queen’s Medal for Music in 2011, will perform with the Britten Oboe Quartet on 18th November.

With an exciting jazz concert; ‘Homage to Django Reinhardt’ and a performance by actress Patricia Routledge with pianist Piers Lane that will explore the life and work of Dame Myra Hess, this November is one to look forward to!

Trees are not only good for the environment but also essential for the people. Trees often survive when other crops fail so families can rely on a sustainable, nutritious variety of foods including fruit, nuts and even leaves and flowers. This awe-inspiring experience will take you through a fantastical world of real ice and snow. Created from over 200 tons of ice and snow over four months by 20 sculptors, this breath-taking experience will host over 500 ice and snow sculptures. The Magical Ice Kingdom has been specially created by Hyde Park Winter Wonderland and will be the biggest ice and snow experience of its kind.

Follow the magical pathways and admire the beauty of the exquisite sculptures and crystal-like characters throughout the themed rooms.

Meet the woodland ice creatures as you roam through the stalagmite ice forest and see ice bears, wolves, stags, owls, foxes, squirrels and rabbits. Try a seat in a fairy tale unicorn-pulled carriage and take the slide in the magnificent ice castle or dare to approach the ice dragon’s lair with the knights and archers and meet the ice Queen in her throne room.

The Magical Ice Kingdom will be housed inside a winter palace, stretching 40m x 25m, which will be chilled to -8c in order to keep the sculptures frozen throughout the run. There is timed entry so please choose a time slot before booking.

Observation Wheel and the beautiful Angels Christmas Market and new Yuletide Market and Santa Land for the younger visitors. Zippos Circus returns with two shows – the family friendly Zippos Christmas Circus and Zippos Cirque Berserk – for the evening crowd.

So, wrap up warm and enter the arctic experience that will take your breath away as you lose yourself in the magical land of snow and ice.

The ever popular Bavarian Village will be back ready to serve even more bratwurst and mulled wine whilst hosting live music throughout the day and evening. A delicacy in every way

We enjoy the culinary delights of La Capanna in Cobham

f a restaurant was judged on looks alone, La Capanna would get full marks! With original features, it’s actually an old farmhouse transported from Sussex to Cobham and reassembled behind the façade of a 16th century cottage in Cobham High Street.

There are four different dining areas, The Dining Room which is the oldest part of the restaurant ; The Minstrels Gallery which is upstairs and a great place for a more secluded romantic meal; The Conservatory, very popular for parties, and finally The Italian Garden perfect for a peaceful alfresco lunch or dinner in the warmer months. So there you have it, you only have to look at the photographs here to see that La Capanna is quite possibly one of the prettiest restaurants in Surrey. I spent an evening there recently to see if it was quite as pretty on the palate!

We were greeted and seated by a very friendly waiter who brought us a lovely selection of breads and extremely tasty Italian olives, although the restaurant is quite large(it can seat up to 140 diners), it still felt homely and rather cosy especially on a chilly Autumn evening. Now the wine list… wine lovers will not be disappointed. An extensive selection of many new and old world variants, as well as a rather decent list of Champagnes including a bottle of Louis Roederer Cristal at just £1800. I opted for a bottle of house white as it wasn’t quite pay day, Trebbiano D’Abruzzo Doc 2011 at a very reasonable £17 per bottle.

For my starter I chose La Capanna Antipasto Misto, a delicious mix of fresh seafood beautifully presented on a black square slate. My friend went for the Scallops with Nduja Spilinga & black olive crust. Bernardo, La Capanna’s

general manager took our order and he certainly knows his menu. I chose rabbit stuffed with wild mushroom risotto and he told me exactly how it was prepared as if he were the chef himself. This was off a selection of specials that change daily.

Monkfish was the main course choice of my friend, pan fried with broccoli purée, clams, mussels and creamy mashed potato. It looked nice and was, so I’m told, delicious. We had a bit of a wait between our starters and main course as the restaurant was starting to get pretty busy. Bernardo appeared producing plates for us with a couple of fresh, homemade pasta parcels stuffed with Burrata. “You didn’t order any pasta dishes” he said, “I thought you might like to try some”.

A really lovely touch as well as being very tasty, and the wait was cleverly disguised. White chocolate mousse with a passion fruit sorbet was our choice of desert and a very good choice it was too!

Behind the scenes is the recent arrival of acclaimed chef Francesco Mazzei and his head chef from London Restaurant L’Anima, Claudio Milani. I don’t know what it was like to dine at La Capanna before their arrival but right now I can’t wait to return, pretty as a picture and even prettier on the palate.

Changes to Legal Aid and No Win No Fee will affect medical negligence claims

elen Goatley, a Clinical Negligence specialist with law firm Barlow Robbins LLP explains how forthcoming changes could impact on eligibility for Legal Aid and the damages awarded in medical negligence claims

if you have been injured during your Mother’s pregnancy, labour or in the first eight weeks of your life. Even if your claim is successful you may find 25% of your damages taken away in the form of a Legal Aid Levy by the Legal Aid Agency.

As Legal Aid will be less available, more people will be turning to solicitors for No Win No Fee arrangements. However, from April 2013, those claimants too could find some of their damages being used to pay the solicitor’s success fee, as this fee will no longer be recoverable from the defendant.

Most people receive excellent care from the health professionals. But when standards slip below the level patients have a right to expect, and somebody is hurt as a result, the law allows for a medical negligence claim to be made.

At present, people who have a claim can receive Legal Aid to cover their costs if they can’t afford to pay for it themselves. If they are not eligible for Legal Aid, solicitors will often act on a No Win No Fee basis. In both cases, you pay nothing if your case is unsuccessful, but if you win the costs are paid by the losing defendant. Now that is all set to change. The law on paying legal fees in medical negligence cases is going to be dramatically different when the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act comes into force next April.

Under the new rules, you will only be able to claim Legal Aid

The long and short of it is that if you think you have a claim against a healthcare provider, don’t leave it too late. If you get your Legal Aid or solicitor’s fee arrangement in place before April 2013, the new rules will not apply and this could make a big difference to the amount of your compensation that you get to keep if you are successful.

n the 50 years since Ian Fleming’s debonair secret agent introduced himself to Sylvia Trench at a card table in Dr No, global politics have changed beyond recognition. The Iron Curtain has fallen, the Cold War has thawed, the People’s Republic Of China has emerged as a superpower and terrorism has shifted into the digital realm, forcing James Bond and his colleagues at MI6 to evolve. Actors, who have been licenced to kill during these five turbulent decades, have brought something new to the party.

George Lazenby George Lazenby invested his short-lived 007 with tender romance while Roger Moore arched an eyebrow with impish glee, doling out innuendo-laden one-liners with aplomb.

It’s telling that the abiding memory of Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace is a pair of tight, blue swimming shorts. Skyfall will do nothing to dispel those concerns but is undoubtedly the best instalment of Craig’s tenure to date.

Director Sam Mendes sensibly surrounds his leading man with an ensemble of award-winning actors, who bring gravitas and humour to their iconic roles.

This tour-de-force supporting cast encourages Craig to raise his game but also exposes his weaknesses as an actor, most noticeably in a pivotal scene of heartbreak, which relies on a drenching from a previous fist fight to send droplets of water down his inexpressive face, suggesting the tears of a momentarily broken man.

In the brilliantly orchestrated action sequences, Craig is in his element and Mendes opens with a breathtaking 12-minute pre-credits sequence, which draws heavily from the Bourne franchise to propel Bond and field agent Eve (Naomie Harris) through the winding streets of Istanbul.

of Adele’s soaring theme song that harks back to the belting ballads of Shirley Bassey. With Bond reportedly killed in action, section chief M (Dame Judi Dench) pens an obituary as a political storm rages around her. A database of MI6 assets has fallen into the wrong hands, compromising undercover agents around the world. This dereliction of duty puts M and the department’s Chief Of Staff, Bill Tanner (Rory Kinnear), in the firing line and they are summoned to Westminster before a committee including the new Chairman of the Intelligence And Security Committee, Mallory (Ralph Fiennes), and ambitious rival Clair Dowar (Helen McCrory). While M fends off sustained attacks on her reputation, news filters through that Bond has survived and M engages her physically bruised agent to track down menacing cyber terrorist Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem).

Working alongside Q (Ben Whishaw) and Eve, Bond traverses the globe in search of Silva, crossing paths with the mysterious Severine (Berenice Marlohe) in a casino in Macau, which facilitates a steamy shower sex scene. As the investigation continues, Bond unearths dark secrets from M’s past that threaten to bring down the whole of MI6.

Skyfall looks stunning courtesy of cinematographer Roger Deakins and action sequences don’t disappoint. Bravely, the 23rd Bond assignment pares back the slam bang thrills to concentrate on characterisation and plot, putting Dench’s authority figure at the centre of the betrayal.

The film dazzles during verbal jousts, whether it’s M discovering Bond in the shadows of her London apartment (“You’re bloody well not sleeping here!”) or Silva fondling Bond’s inner thighs and asking what regulation training suggests he do. “What makes you think it’s my first time?” cheekily replies 007.

Bardem is deliciously camp and menacing, recalling classic villains of yore as he berates M for her deceptions in one breath (“Mummy was very bad!”) then guns down innocent bystanders without mercy. Dench is wonderful as ever and really excels when she abandons her desk for the field of action. Supporting actress Oscar nominations have been bestowed for far less. Whishaw asserts himself as a gadget geek with a terrific introductory scene

in an art gallery, warning Bond that “age is no guarantee of experience.”

A throwaway visual gag with his coffee mug is a hoot. Fiennes and Harris acquit themselves well but sultry Bond girl Marlohe is forgettable.

The closing 20 minutes are the only obvious misstep by screenwriters Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan, who telegraph their intentions early on when Severine asks Bond if he will kill Silva and 007 responds “someone usually dies”. To tie up the loose ends, the writers hurriedly introduce an additional character, Bond’s old gamekeeper Kincade (Albert Finney), who exists purely to manoeuvre characters into the correct positions.

Director Mendes gets high on nostalgia to the obvious delight of Bond purists. However, he spends slightly too long looking back and not enough looking forward, and consequently stumbles with the lacklustre final showdown more befitting of an episode of The A-Team than the second biggest film franchise in history.

ASTON MARTIN DB9 This is where it all began. It still seems like yesterday, but back in 2003 the epic Vanquish V12 disappeared from the price lists, and in doing so it signalled the end of a chapter for Aston Martin.

e were all sad to see such a genuine British supercar shuffle off - at least until we saw what replaced it.

The DB9 can take a huge slice of credit for the leaps and bounds that the manufacturer has made in the last 10 years, putting it back up where it belonged.

It is fitting then that the DB9 gets just rewards in the form of a gentle makeover. There have been updates along the way of course, such as the option of the Touchtronic transmission and the divine Bang & Olufsen audio system, but this is the most serious upgrade the car has received in its six-year life.

A single glance will register a subtle change, but not necessarily what it is. Allow me to put you out of your misery: at the front there’s a new bumper with a slicker air intake and new headlight surrounds. There’s also handsome new 20-inch alloys, sliver brake callipers and clear rear light lenses. But the fact that so little has changed proves the inherent rightness of the original design. Despite no longer being the new kid in town, the DB9 is still a magnificently beautiful

car: it has grace and enormous presence, and seeing one on the road is never anything less than a treat. To add to the looks there are a wider choice of colours too.

Inside it is business class as usual. High quality materials are used throughout while the layout is familiar too. It may take a little while to fathom the minutiae of the DB9’s systems, but then this is a proper GT car that has many strings to its bow. Cabin comfort comes as standard too, with sports seat that offer support in the corners without inducing aches over long periods.

All these are static improvements however, and what matters more is the major mechanical change. All DB9s including the drop-top Volante now adopt the Adaptive Damping System already fitted to the DBS, offering both Normal and Sport modes depending on the driver’s mood and the conditions, helping to maximise the performance of the chassis as well as tailoring the car’s performance as required.

Out on the road the difference between the two settings is marked. In Normal mode the DB9 does what it is already very good at: soothing the worst of the road imperfections away without ever allowing body roll or cornering performance to become an issue. In fact you could drive the DB9 in this mode forever and never think it was lacking.

But then you punch the Sport button, and there is a clear stiffening of the sinews and a less filtered transmission of the road surface to the driver. Bumpy roads won’t go unnoticed for sure, but neither will the genuine excellence of the DB9’s chassis. In Sport mode you can exploit every last shred of grip, feel the strength in the chassis and the impressive communication that comes as a result. This is a Grand Tourer that thinks nothing of devouring a B-road for fun, and never feels short of ability or dynamism.

It also remains an epically fast car. In the ever-escalating world of power outputs - not least its siblings in the shape of the more punchy and lighter V12 Vantage and the biblically-powerful One77 hypercar - it’s easy to think that the 470bhp V12 in the DB9 is somehow average. But one extended tread of accelerator pedal into the carpet will put paid to that. Choose third gear for the best effect, and from 2,000rpm there is a deep, hearty

growl as the 6.0-litre unit goes to work. By 4,000rpm it’s really shifting and once past the 6k mark and honing in on the red line the scenery will be a blur, grins will be worn from ear-to-ear and the noise coming from the quad exhausts is worthy of a Spitfire fly-by.

In this rarefied field a sense of occasion is everything: every journey needs to be one to savour, and even the dullest trips should be brightened by the car’s sheer personality. The DB9 manages this without breaking sweat and yet it demands little from the driver, allowing it to perform the role of a true GT car. The best news about this series of revisions is that it means the Aston Martin DB9 will be around for a good few years to come.

ast your mind back to 2002 and the introduction of what has become a long-lived, high-tech luxury SUV to rival not just other 4x4s but also offerings from the luxury saloon market: the third-generation Range Rover. A decade later and there's a new one promising to raise the premium 4x4 to new heights.

Admit it, we all know that the arrival of a new Range Rover is guaranteed to put rivals in the shade. e question is, by how much.

From a visual inspection alone the answer is 'considerable'. e car's sleek profile is striking. Unlike engineering, assessing design is a subjective activity, so here's a solid number to consider: 450. at's 450 kilograms, as in the amount of weight saved thanks to the use of lightweight materials and clever thinking from the engineers. Don't forget, such a saving has a positive affect on fuel economy, emissions and handling.

It remains an imposing machine but now it's a fraction lower than its predecessor. is is small change compared to the car's generous wheelbase - 42mm greater than before - which has increased rear legroom. Anyone who thinks a Range Rover can't compete with a Mercedes S-Class really needs to take a back seat.

Along with the car's plush yet modern new interior, complete with tastefully appointed materials and minimalist switchgear, the visual overhaul is complete. What you can't see is the work that's gone on under the car's lighter skin to achieve new levels of on-road refinement and stability plus considerable improvements to the off-road experience.

Central to the car's performance is a height adjustable suspension system boasting enhanced amounts of wheel travel. Opt for the 'Dynamic Response' feature and the car will attempt to further minimise pitch and roll - the sworn enemies of high-sided 4x4s. It gets more interesting when venturing off-road, as the car's refreshed Terrain Response system can now detect the terrain you're driving on and adjust the throttle, suspension, transmission accordingly.

With a Range Rover it's a given that its powertrain will boast the best technology, and this model is no different. e standard 50-50 torque split is accompanied by a low range transfer gearbox that can be switched even when on the move, while a locking centre 5 4 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 2

differential is there to save you when the going is particularly tricky.

Rejigging the car's ventilation system has led to a considerable increase in its wading depth to a massive 900mm.

Power comes from a trio of engines all connected to an eight-speed auto gearbox. First up is the 510 horsepower supercharged petrol V8 motor. With this realistically destined for oil rich nations, the six and eight-cylinder diesels make more sense.

Boasting 258 and 339 horsepower respectively, these engines offer smooth yet willing performance - especially the latter. at a six-cylinder motor is even offered in such a car is proof that the weight loss programme has been successful.

Of course, the V8 diesel delivers a feeling of invincibility that you can't get anywhere else. And it sure helps when you're towing.

Whisper it, though, because the V6 diesel variant is no slouch. It can cruise and haul the car uphill with surprising vigour, and all with the minimum of noise. For many this might be the sleeper hit of the range.

When considering the overall ownership experience the usual long and tempting list of creature comforts are present, from a business class-like two-seat rear layout to powerful audio and multimedia options plus the usual heated, cooled and massaging seats. Factor in the welcome inclusion of intelligent safety systems radar cruise control, blind spot warnings and cameras to help you park - and it's clear that you'll want for little.

The design duo behind Archie Foal, Tessa Weale and Julian Turner combine two very different fashion aesthetics. A good night's sleep is highly underrated, and can work wonders for radiant skin and glossy hair.

"Sleep is when your body does more of its repair work, and not getting enough shows up both physically and emotionally," explains sleep expert Dr Chris Idzikowski.

"An undisturbed and restful night offers an abundance of beauty benefits and can be enhanced further by deep conditioning treatments for your skin and hair."

PILLOW TALK No matter how snuggly your duvet is, if your bedroom doesn't provide the optimum conditions, you may struggle to reach your beauty sleep potential.

Regulate the temperature of your room. Ramping up the central heating at night can lead to dried-out skin and frizzy, brittle hair.

Dr Idzikowski advises: "When the central heating is on and the room is hot and dry, we can toss and turn to cool down. Either use a humidifier or place a bowl of water by the radiator. is will help to make your skin and hair less arid."

Sleeping on your back in a slightly raised position aids the body's natural drainage process to avoid puffy eyes and a bloated face.

Industry experts also swear by silk pillow cases to boost your beauty at night. "Silk is much more gentle on the skin and hair,"

Dr Idzikowski explains.

"Sleeping on a silk pillowcase can prevent hair thinning and split ends. e weave in a cotton pillow can be quite harsh on hair, pulling it in different directions resulting in breakage."

SLEEPY HEAD Eight hours is the magic optimal amount of sleep but it can be elusive.

If you have trouble nodding off, indulge in some snooze-enhancing activities, like a luxurious bubble bath. Lavender oil also has calming properties to help you drift off when applied to your pulse points.

Alternatively, dot under your pillow or add a few drops to your bath.

Even though I was blessed with thick eyebrows and a natural arch, I raged war against them with a pair of tweezers long before the fashion for bold, defined brows a

la Kate Middleton. ey never grew back and I became a slave to pencils to help define my brows. I decided to end the laborious task of colouring in every morning with the help of semi-permanent make-up. Tracie Giles uses hypoallergenic pure mineral pigments which are colour blended to suit your skin tone and hair colour. My technician matched me to a medium blonde II. e first two-hour procedure is all about tweezing, shaping and defining the brow with a pencil before using a digital cosmetic tattoo device to apply the mineral pigment. Once happy with the shape ("Eyebrows should be sisters, not twins," says Pauline), she then spent half an hour on each brow scratching in the pigment and tracing it over the pencil. e first application is without local anaesthetic and the pin pricks are painful, but repeated strokes are then swabbed to relieve the pain.

A moisturising balm is applied, which I have to repeat four times daily for five days, as well as avoiding getting my eyebrows wet. e redness lasted 36 hours, my browbone was slightly swollen and tender, but the results were already impressive. ree weeks later, I return for the second appointment (approx 45 minutes), by which time my brows had become gradually lighter. Pauline tweezed and pencilled them in again with a pencil before repeating the same scratching procedure to intensify, sharpen and define. e pain threshold was the same, but much quicker as Pauline was simply building on the colour. e results are so impressive, the pin pricks quickly become a distant memory. My new brows have opened up my eyes, framed my face and I wake up bright-eyed and bushy-browed with an extra, pencil-free 10 minutes in my day ■

ou’ll ensure sweet dreams if you literally allow your imagination to run wild and indulge your taste to create a sanctuary that soothes your senses. “When it comes to creating the perfect winter retreat, you need to make sure it’s as snug and as inviting as possible,” says Damian Topping at bed specialists, Dreams. “We’re demanding far more of this room than ever before, because it’s often used as another ‘lounge’ where we sit and relax, watch television, and generally enjoy private time.

“Nowadays, we find people have very definite ideas about their style. They’ve often stayed in hotels and want to replicate a look they’ve liked, whether it’s ultra-traditional, romantic or a sophisticated, ‘hotel’ style which leans to the contemporary.” The bed is usually the largest piece of furniture in a bedroom and will dominate the space, so care needs to be taken in choosing its scale, design and style. But equally important is making the right decor choice, says colour and design manager at Dulux Rebecca Thompson.

“Colour affects our mood and is particularly key in setting this room’s atmosphere. While soft neutrals conjure a serene, restful space, that doesn’t mean you can’t have colour which is so popular in homes currently,” she says. “Greens and blues are popular, and I’d favour a rising star in the colour palette, indigo. It’s a striking, rich statement shade inspired by dreamy, ocean landscapes hidden from everyone but deep sea divers. “It tones with warm neutrals or other soothing tones of blue or purple.” Get the look with Indigo Night from the Dulux Paint Mixing range, one litre emulsion, £14.89.

It’s upholstered in buttoned soft velvet with an elegantly scrolled head and foot. The essence of country style is pared-back decoration, with the emphasis on texture and quality and natural materials.

Decor should be simple with painted or tongue-and-groove panelled walls, or wallpaper featuring nature to help set a rustic scene. “Keep clashing patterns to a minimum and instead layer textured soft furnishings, quilts and cushions to give a snuggly feel,” says Damian Topping. “Use a large rug, such as a sheepskin, to add warmth on wooden floorboards or hard floors. Add to the air of informality by using, instead of a bedside table, books stacked in a small tower by the bedside. Opt for functional, practical lights and a few well-chosen prints for the walls. Fussy embellishment has no place in these rooms.”

Hotel chic For contemporary hotel design invest in neutral bed linen, in crisp cotton and natural fabrics, a quality duvet, and pile up fluffy pillows, says Topping. “A plain decor scheme can be enlivened with a wall of pattern whose colours tie in with the neutral shades on the wall,” he says. “Opt, ideally, for a generous sized headboard and

streamlined furniture to add subtle but understated style. Overdress the bed, with an abundance of covers, quilts and a runner to create a lavish effect.” Minimise clutter, he advises, and enhance the room with soft lighting using sidelighters and dimmers. “This style of room should cocoon you and black-out blinds and inter-lined curtains will avoid any chinks of light from disturbing your sleep.”

Where elegance meets inspiration

atthew and Lisa Harding are no beginners when it comes to creating beautiful houses. Their portfolio is impressive. Yet Whincop was a very special project to them, because it was built in an exclusive private drive in Cheam - on the site of their former home! This was the setting for their vision of a classic, Regency-style house, incorporating every conceivable touch of luxury.

“We were inspired by the romance of the Regency period…” said Lisa. “… the time when the British were beginning to indulge in ‘The Grand Tour’, travelling throughout Europe and collecting treasures along the way. We wanted to bring this look and feel to Whincop. We wanted people to walk into it and imagine that they had stepped back in time.”

The result is an extraordinarily impressive house, with classic elevations and spacious rooms, surrounded by formal gardens. It was important to

find interior designers with whom they could share their vision. They chose Alexander James Interiors, based at White Waltham, Berkshire. “We had seen a couple of their show houses,” said Matthew, “and recognised immediately that they were the perfect partners to help us achieve our vision.” Alexander James Interiors became involved from an early stage. Their designer for the project, Gabriela Citaro, remembered her first meeting with the owners.

“It was clear from the beginning that Matt and Lisa were committed to building a house of outstanding quality and design,” she said. “In this type of partnership, chemistry is essential, and we all felt comfortable right from the start. A collaborative approach always works well. The client gains the experience of the designer, whilst the designer gains an insight into the client’s vision. Alexander James offers such a vast variety of products that once we understand that vision, it’s easy to make the correct selections.

“The architecture was so specific and detailed that I could easily see how the house should look,” said Gabriela. “Our two main aims were classical lines and understated elegance. That might sound like a cliché, but not all houses are so inspiring!

“Lisa and I discussed colours,” she said. “Each room was to have its own particular colour accent, whilst the background colour palette, inspired by period Regency colours, was to remain constant and blend it all in. “The entrance is particularly impressive,” said Gabriela. “The open space links all the rooms in the house. There is an arch separating the vestibule from the inner hall, so we gave each area its own individual mood, using different wall colours.

Silver console tables and mirrors frame the entrance to the dining room and we made sure that the few accessories were large and bold.

Gabriela was particularly enthusiastic about the dining room. “I loved working on this room,” she said. “I chose a round table, to give the friendliest dining arrangement, and chose a formal setting with white and silver dinnerware, crystal glasses and fresh white napkins over the dark table top. These colours were echoed in the chandelier - and red flowers were used as an accent colour. “From the

dining room, you walk straight into the drawing room. The windows in this room are spectacular, so I decided to enhance them with simple drapes with a patterned band, to be echoed by the wallpaper. We added dynamism with an array of cushions of different colours, sizes and textures.

“In the master bedroom, the sophisticated look was achieved with metallic finishes on the furniture, complemented by the semi-metallic wallpaper, antique mirror frames and chrome speckled accessories. Purple was the accent for the soft furnishings, and we carried this through to the ensuite bathroom and dressing room.”

Matthew and Lisa had the last word on the result. “Fantastic!” said Lisa. “Very professional.

Super people to work with! We will certainly be using Alexander James again,” added Matthew.

Surrey’s Hidden Gem “Rowhurst” is one of Surrey’s oldest buildings. Nestling serenely in five acres of mature trees and meadow grass, only the rumble of the M25 convinces enchanted visitors that they have not stepped back in time.

wner Lucy Quinnell is, suitably, descended from one of Surrey’s oldest families. Her Quinnell ancestors were celebrated ironworkers near Haslemere, and the original family home was Lythe Hill, built by the Quinnell family in the 1400s, and now a hotel and spa.

Incredibly, hundreds of years later, the Quinnells are still ironworkers.

Lucy’s grandfather, grandmother and father each in turn ran a forge at Rowhurst, so Lucy grew up with blacksmithing, before choosing it as her profession in 1990. She is married to blacksmith Adam Boydell, and together they run Fire and Iron, a forge and gallery at Rowhurst dedicated to the survival and progression of this increasingly unusual craft.

“I look back and realise how lucky I was to live in such a rich and interesting environment. The men who worked in the forge, and the people who visited the forge – both professionals and clients, were extraordinary. I watched and worked on fascinating projects from the start. Helping with the gates to Shakespeare’s Globe stands out as one of my most inspiring early work experiences.”

More than two decades later, Lucy is recognised as a leading professional in her field. She has sold over £4,000,000 worth of individual metal artworks, and she is in demand as a designer and lecturer. In 2011, she was appointed Editor of Artist Blacksmith, a specialist magazine with an international readership. She has made numerous television appearances in the UK and Japan.

Lucy and Adam met at a blacksmithing conference, and they work together on public art projects and private commissions – not surprisingly, the waiting time for their unique, hand-made work currently stands at eighteen months. They recently completed a life-size sculpture of the Amesbury Archer in Wiltshire, and they are currently working on public art for Frome in Somerset, traditional ornate window furniture for the house of a private client, and a sculpture celebrating Lizzie Armitstead’s success in the Women’s Olympic Cycling Road Race. Lucy and Adam have won awards for their work, including an RHS Gold Medal.

Working in a heritage craft, and living in medieval buildings on a rural site, Lucy has become passionate about history and ecology. In 2011, she started a community campaign to buy and care for Teazle Wood, Leatherhead’s last major woodland, close to Rowhurst. Her firm belief in the potential of this piece of Surrey countryside spurred others to join her, and the woodland was purchased in July 2012.

“Teazle Wood is a vital Ancient Woodland, hosting several endangered species, such as Great Crested newts and the plant Green Hound’stongue. It is a ‘stepping stone’ for wildlife from other Surrey woodlands, and offers tremendous archaeological interest, with evidence of human occupation from pre-Roman times. It is enjoyed by the veterans of nearby Combat Stress, as well as the adjacent

Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation for Disabled People and students from neighbouring schools. The wood has been badly neglected for decades, and this is an important chance to nurture it.”

Lucy’s campaign was backed by leading environmentalists, including Tim Smit, who supported her vision “for its vital contribution to ecology and the community.” Funds are still needed, to pay back loans made by local people over and above their donations – if you can help, do contact Lucy.

Fire and Iron Gallery is open all year round, and anyone can call in and enjoy hundreds of incredible metal artworks created by Lucy and Adam’s friends and colleagues.

Many of the artworks are bold and modern, rivalling those found in leading contemporary London art galleries – don’t expect this ancient environment to yield only black scrollwork and traditional fire tools. Historic though it may be, behind the heavy oak doors this is a current, vibrant place, and there can be little doubt that its owner has her finger firmly on the pulse.

“Give grey a starring role by using it on walls and paintwork, he suggests, and a matching gloss paint finish for woodwork. Face the wall If you’re committing to a new relationship with this colour, the best place to start is with the walls. To find the one grey you love - experiment! “Grey is a surprisingly calming and harmonious colour to live with, but you must choose the right tone,” advises Mark Upstone, head of global visual display at The Conran Shop. “Greys with more brown in the mix will feel warm - white based greys will feel colder. “Be bold. Don’t restrict yourself to a feature wall, grey looks better en masse, and use different finishes of the same tone to create intriguing interest and depth.

or many of you Autumn may not be a time of the year that you want to spend a lot of time in the garden. In addition to enjoying the glorious displays of vibrant colours some of your shrubs and trees exhibit at this time of year, top fruit such as apples, should also be providing a reminder of the importance of planning for the long term.

Now is the ideal time to be preparing your fruit garden to keep your larder full to bursting for years to come. Planting fruit bushes and trees is ideal at this time. Any tree planted at this time of year will establish a good root system before next spring, in good conditions. I would however control your expectations as it is unlikely that much if any fruit will be produce next year and for smaller trees, any fruit

that does set should be removed to prevent it diverting it’s energy away from establishment.

Fruit trees, like most other plants, will benefit from having Rootgrow mycorrhizal fungus applied to the root system at planting, to aid establishment. Those mycorrhizal fungi will grow out from the tree much quicker that the plants own roots can and whilst the roots are still developing the tree will be benefitting from the water and nutrients that the fungi are bringing back to it.

When I talk about a fruit garden, do not be frightened off. Fruit trees and bushes do not have to be segregated from your ornamental garden. There is nothing wrong with placing productive plants of any kind amongst those that are there just for ornamental value.

The days of the kitchen garden are long since gone. Who would argue that a well grown grape vine with bunches of grapes deserves to be hidden away next to the vegetable patch, equally apple and pear trees can give interest both in the spring with their flowers and in the autumn with their fruit laden branches. Choosing a dark coloured ripe fruit such as Spartan apple can be equally stunning as any other berried shrub or tree.

If you feel apples or pears are a little common, why not choose something a little more exotic. Peaches, Nectarines and Apricots are all capable of producing good crops with a little shelter and good light levels.

On the other hand if you want something that will definitely stop people in their tracks, why not plant a medlar, Mespilus germanica, this unusual frit looks exotic but has been grown in the UK and

northern Europe since medieval times. The fruit is pleasantly spicy when ripe but rather tart.

People often worry that fruit takes up a lot of room; however this need not be the case. The use of trained fruit can minimise the use of space and can release up space for other fruit or ornamental plants. In gardening people use all manner of names for different trained fruit such as cordons, fans, espaliers and standards.

Forget all the technical stuff, the name isn’t important, what you want is plants that have been trained either by pruning or by tying to create a plant that takes up less space.

Plants that have been cordoned, fanned or espalied, are all 2D there branches trained so that they take up the least amount of space. I have seen these used successfully against walls and fences and more innovatively as informal fences/ hedges trained along wires. Standards in their various heights, are ideal for allowing underplanting as the tree or bush is on a clear stem. I have seen these used quite formally with rosemary, lavender or buxus grown underneath.

When in years to come, your harvests are bountiful and you feel you do not know what to do with your windfall, do not forget me, I will happily help you out with it. Happy planting!
