Get a glimpse behind the scenes with

Hollywood Photographs

A new exhibition at The Lightbox gallery and museum in Woking will feature photographic portraits of some of the most iconic stars of the silver screen taken between 1930 and 1950, an era now regarded as the classic period of Hollywood still photography

T

he exhibition, ‘The Getty Images Archive: Hollywood Photographs’, will also include a number of unique behind-thescenes, informal portraits of stars taken far from the film set and away from the glare of publicity. The photographs within the exhibition are to be taken from the renowned John Kobal Foundation, now administered by Getty Images. John Kobal began his extensive and renowned collection of Hollywood images as a teenager. Passionate about film he collected film-fan memorabilia and images of his favourite stars. Kobal’s interest in film naturally led him to have an extensive knowledge of the subject and this, along with his extensive collection, led to the creation of The John Kobal Foundation. John Kobal has long been recognised as an authority on the subject of Hollywood film and was responsible for rediscovering the great Hollywood Studio Photographers. The Foundation continues to promote this work, mounting exhibitions worldwide and publishing a number of books including ‘Glamour of the Gods’, ‘Hollywood Unseen’ and ‘Hollywood Dogs’. The John Kobal Foundation is now represented by Getty Images. Founded in 1995, by Mark Getty and Jonathan Klein, with the aim of bringing the fragmented stock photography business into the digital age, Getty Images was the first company to license imagery online. The company has continued to be forward thinking in the use of licensing models, digital media management tools and a comprehensive offering of creative and editorial imagery. As such,

6 MARCH 2014

The Lightbox has been able to draw from an impressive selection of Hollywood images from the archive of The John Kobal Foundation to create the exhibition ‘The Getty Images Archive: Hollywood Photographs’. The exhibition will present over forty photographic images of some of the most iconic Hollywood stars. These photographic stills, taken between 1930 and 1950 in the classic age of cinema, portray silver screen legends including Joan Collins and Humphrey Bogart. In addition, there will be informal, behind-the-scenes photographs which seemingly show the ‘ordinary lives’ of the stars of Hollywood film. These images, however, are deceiving - Hollywood film stars were contractually obliged to portray a certain image to the public, often embracing and exaggerating the perceived glamour of Hollywood. The photographs in the exhibition show some of the many ways the Hollywood movie studio publicists strived to create the right public image for a star and included the use of carefully selected props and locations. All of the works in this exhibition have been kindly lent by the Getty Images Gallery from The John Kobal Foundation. To find out more please visit www.johnkobal.org and www.gettyimagesgallery.com. The exhibition ‘The Getty Images Archive: Hollywood Photographs’ will be on show at The Lightbox from 22 March 2014 – 22 June 2014, entrance is free. Go over the edge and raise money for Princess Alice Hospice

If you’ve ever wanted to take on a challenge now is the time to do it. Princess Alice Hospice’s sponsored abseil is returning for the fourth year running. Supporters will be abseiling the 90ft drop off the Queen’s Stand at Epsom Racecourse to raise money for the Hospice.

L

ast year the event raised over £20,000 which helped to provide high quality care and support to patients and their families. This year, the Hospice is hoping to raise even more. Tim Green, Community and Events Fundraising Officer, said: “The sponsored abseil is always a great event. People take part for all different reasons, some are taking on a personal challenge or facing a fear, others are doing it in memory of a loved one. The one thing they all have in common though is the smile on their face when they reach the ground and complete the challenge; it’s always amazing to see. This year we are hoping to raise even more for the Hospice which will make a real difference to the care we provide.”

12 MARCH 2014

Jane Fisher, from Ashtead, is taking part in this year’s abseil for Princess Alice Hospice and said: “I’m really excited; I’ve never done anything like this before. As well as helping a charity, completing the challenge will really boost my self-esteem. Doing something like this makes you realise that there are a lot of people suffering more than you. A family friend was cared for at the Hospice when she became really poorly with cancer. Not only did they care for her, they provided care to the family after she has passed away which made a real difference to the children. I’d just like to help the Hospice make a difference.” You can take part in the abseil as an individual or as part of a team, and as the event is open to anyone over the age of 12, it’s

the perfect challenge to take on as a family. One of this year’s participants, Sandra Otley from Horsham, said: “There are a group of seven of us taking part in the abseil. We are very excited- we have done charity events before but this time I wanted to get my two sons involved. They’re very surprised their mum is doing an abseil! I don’t really like heights so it’s a personal challenge too.”

There are still places available in this year’s Over the Edge at Epsom abseil. To find out more and to enter, please visit www.pah.org.uk/abseil or call our Fundraising Team on 01372 461986.

get fit to ride with Hoops Velo A

t Just over six months old, Hoops Velo is the newest cycling shop in Surrey. Located in East Street, Farnham, it’s a haven for road cyclists looking for the best selection of quality road bikes from the world’s leading cycling brands. Owner Gary Bird wanted trip to HoopsVelo to feel like an occasion akin to entering Hamley’s or Selfridges. For a bike shop it certainly feels a little bit special.

Visitors to Hoops Velo are warmly welcomed with friendly smiles from the staff and the inviting aroma of fresh coffee brewing and home-made cakes. The ambience of this renovated former pub, with its wood beams and rustic exposed brickwork, and room to sit and soak up the vibe ensures it feels like a

home from home.

HoopsVelo are keen to support the local road cycling scene, with strong ties to local cycling clubs and organisations, the shop is a hub for activity in Farnham and across the rest of Surrey. Backing up their sales of bikes, apparel and accessory equipment, is a strong desire to inform and educate cyclists; whether prospective first timers or seasoned old hands, sage advice from HoopsVelo can help improve your cycling experience. One valuable resource available at Hoops Velo is their new Guru Bike Fit Experience. Hoops Velo are one of only three UK bike shops to pioneer this revolutionary system in the UK. Cycling is a dynamic sport where a rider must interact perfectly with the bike for optimal comfort and power delivery, getting your position on the bike dialled in to perfection can make a huge difference. While bike fitting isn’t a new concept, The Guru system takes it into the 21st Century. A 3D body scan, using technology developed for facial recognition, provides crucial information about a rider’s postural needs, in relation to perfect pedalling. That

information can then be applied to the Guru bike. Any configuration of frame sizing and contact point position – saddle, handlebars and pedals can be dialled in to match your scan data, then, uniquely, the Guru bike can be pedalled as it tips and tilts to emulate the change in rider position when climbing or descending. The result is a much more accurate assessment of an individual cyclist’s positioning requirements. When you select your bike this data can be used to ensure the fit of your new bike can be morphed to match before you ride. If it sounds a bit hi-tech and complex, it isn’t and it’s not just for budding professionals either – even commuters and leisure riders can benefit from a bike that really fits.

The Guru Bike Fit Experience is available at HoopsVelo, we recommend contacting us to discuss your cycling experience and we can book you in for a personal fitting. Telephone: 01252 448836 Email: Twitter: @HoopsVelo Facebook: facebook.com/Hoopsvelo

A musical cocktail shaken and stirred by Southern Pro Musica M

usic lovers in Guildford have much to enjoy with the arrival of Southern Pro Musica, recently appointed as the principal provider of classical music across the Guildford Borough. Their ‘Music for Guildford’ season, brings together evening concerts with free Lunchtime Recitals and workshops in schools across the Guildford area. All their performances reflect the variety and style that characterize the work of Southern Pro Musica, where popular classical music is blended with lesser known works, offering something for the experienced musical-lover and new concert-goer alike. Artistic Director Jonathan Willcocks explains: ‘The core of our mission at Southern Pro Musica is to prove that classical music has something for everyone. Within the orchestra, we have players of very broad professional experience and that gives us the flexibility for varied

programming. We can take on major classical works like the Symphony in C by Bizet which features in our May concert, but also have lots of fun with our ‘Carnival’ repertoire in June, complete with special carnival cocktails and our very special celebrity narrator’. This variety attracts musical soloists of international calibre to perform with the orchestra. Guitarist Vincent Lindsey-Clark is lined up to take centre stage in the May concert, which features the haunting ‘Concierto de Aranjuez’ for guitar and orchestra by Spanish composer Rodrigo, the central melody of which is surely one of the most romantic themes of all time. The June 20th concert includes the very funny and much loved ‘Carnival of the Animals’ by Saint-Saens where each animal is represented by a different instrument in the orchestra and double bass player Tom Martin will have a central role. This is paired with Carnival 2, a new work by Guildford composer Peter White, who extends Saint-Saens’ idea by including lounge lizards and Lonely George the Tortoise. Blending wonderful melodies and witty words, the spoken part will be taken by James Cannon, the popular host of BBC Surrey’s Breakfast Show. ‘We are so pleased to bring these exciting and varied concert programmes to the beautiful surroundings and generous acoustic of Holy Trinity Church in Guildford’ says Jonathan, whose own career has included conducting performances in Carnegie Hall New York, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Symphony Hall in Birmingham, the Royal Festival Hall and Royal Albert Hall in London. ‘And introducing classical music to those who have yet to discover it is of great importance. We lay the foundations for this through our schools work and at our Family Concerts, it was brilliant to see so many children enjoying the music, trying out instruments and having so much fun. And in all our Guildford concerts everyone aged 18 comes completely free..’ Tickets for Southern Pro Musica concerts are available at the TIC in Guildford on 01483 444334. Advice for trading your old car for a new model

Whether a brand new, built to order top of the range prestige model is the order of the day or a more modest, sensible and reliable family car is more in order - getting the best deal possible is in most cases a factor in the decision making process

P

art-exchanging your current car is often seen as the most convenient method of dealing with the issue of what to do with the outgoing model - but is this the best decision financially - can you, just by doing a little more research and making a phone call, get a far better price for your old car and negotiate a better deal on your new car, without a part-exchange? The business of selling a vehicle is often associated with time wasters or faceless “buy any car” type companies meaning that it is deemed easier to accept a part-exchange price to avoid the hassle and inconvenience. However, a small Surrey based family owned company; KTG Cars has a unique approach and provide an honest, professional, discreet and friendly service. “Just wanted to say what an absolute pleasure it was to deal with you in selling my car – the experience was so vastly superior to your national competitors, I kept expecting there to be a downside, but there just wasn’t.” Quite a recommendation for a company that works within one of the most miss-trusted businesses -but just one of many documented comments made by their customers. KTG provide the highest level of customer service, confident that their experienced and expert team will exceed your expectations many of their customers commenting that the sale of their car was an “enjoyable experience” The core business is buying vehicles from people who may have purchased their new car without using the current one as a part-

22 MARCH 2014

exchange to allow for a better deal and find that they have a “surplus to requirements” car parked on the driveway! Some are returning home after a secondment to the UK – they have bought many cars from Expats who have responded to the straight-forward no nonsense, yet secure and friendly approach. KTG do not claim to “buy any car” but specialise in the premium and prestige market. Arrangements are made to suit you; early morning or weekend appointments are available to cause least disruption to your schedule. KTG provide an honest appraisal of your car & full payment made via Lloyds TSB instant transfer. Collection is from the place that suits you best! Buying her dream car could have been tainted for one of their customers with the supplying dealership offering just £25000 for her part-exchange – a call to KTG resulted in an offer and subsequent purchase price of £30,000 for her Jaguar XKR - a not insubstantial difference! Your instinct is generally correct, first impressions are vital when you make contact with a company or individual you are considering doing business with. KTG Cars aim is to personally assist and guide you throughout with discretion, sensitivity and commitment in providing you with a sensible, secure and bespoke car selling experience – one that you will be more than happy to discuss with your family, friends and colleagues. THE BNY MELLON 2014 BOAT RACE

6th

JOIN THE CROWDS AND LINE THE FOUR-AND-A-QUARTER MILE COURSE FROM PUTNEY TO MORTLAKE TO CATCH ALL THE ACTION!

S

ince the Boat Race began in 1829, Oxford have won 76 to Cambridge’s 81 (there’s only been one dead heat in the race’s history, in 1877), so, for those with no strict allegiance to either team, prepare to spur on underdogs Oxford. The actual race doesn’t last very long; the record, set by Cambridge in 1998, is 16min 19sec. In 2013, Oxford won the 159th Boat Race by 1 1/3 lengths in a time of 17 minutes and 28 seconds. The atmosphere will be building up along the course all day and your riverside walk, lingering lunch or extended session in the pub will be crowned by a sighting of one of the capital’s great sporting events. Don’t forget the Goldie (Cambridge) versus Isis (Oxford) race between the reserve crews, which takes place half an hour before the Boat Race on the same course. The rowing clubs’ presidents toss a coin (an 1829 gold sovereign) for the right to pick which side of the river they row on. Choosing the Middlesex station means an advantage on the first and final sections of the race; the Surrey station has the advantage round the long middle bend. Don’t worry, the traditional terms ‘Middlesex’ station and ‘Surrey’ station signify nothing to most people, but in the lingo of some Londoners, Middlesex means the north bank of the river and Surrey, the south. The Boat Race course is marked by three classic bends, two in favour of the Middlesex

24 MARCH 2014

station, on the north bank of the Thames, while the third favours the crew drawn on the opposite Surrey station. In spite of these bends the course is theoretically fair - the start and finish lines are exactly parallel, and in the unlikely event of the crews staying level throughout the race, they will both have covered the magic Boat Race distance of exactly 4 miles 374 yards. The start of the race is marked by the University stone, a few hundred yards upstream from Putney Road Bridge and for the first quarter of a mile, as the crews pass the historic boathouses of Putney Embankment. The Finish Line is just a few yards downstream from Chiswick Road bridge and here the crowds on Race Day are as densely packed as those near the Start. What those crowds witness as the crews cross the Line is the ecstasy of the victors and the despair of the losing crew.

april

and Barnes (mid-course); Dukes Meadows and Chiswick Bridge (at the finish). If you are watching from the water’s edge, don’t get too caught up in the excitement! Following the competing eights is a dramatic procession of other vessels - the umpires’ launch, the camera boats, the Port of London Authority boat and the Marine Support Unit. Between them, they create a wash big enough to give the unwary a serious soaking. A major part of the umpire’s role is keeping the crews apart as each fight for the best racing line. Last year, the umpire stopped the race after a rogue swimmer appeared in the race path. The race was restarted with the crews level, however, shortly after the restart, Oxford broke an oar and Cambridge went on to take the win. Umpires are always old ‘Blues’ and will sometimes wear a colour, often a cap, that reveals which university they rowed for.

On Race Day up to 250,000 spectators crowd the banks of the Thames from Putney to Mortlake to witness the action. Remember, all the riverside pubs will be heaving, with the crowds spilling out onto the towpaths. If you’re planning to watch from a pub, arrive early! Enjoy the festival atmosphere of the Boat Race by watching for free from one of the many vantage points along the course. You should be able to find a place to watch on either side of the river along the full length of the course, but particular areas to note are: Putney Bridge, Putney Embankment and Bishops Park (at the start); Hammersmith

BBC1 will be showing the Boat Race live visit www.bbc.co.uk for more information For more information about the Boat Race www.theboatrace.org

Gatwick Airport Meet and Greet Parking

O

ver 20 years ago Trevor Bryan saw an opportunity in the market place to improve the airport parking arrangements that was generally offered to the public at Gatwick Airport. Having been in the travel business for over a decade he could see the many advantages of valet parking had over it’s park and ride competition. The problem was that the cost of valet parking was prohibitive and unavailable to most peoples pockets. From a Tudor farmhouse a couple of miles from Gatwick Airport Trevor offered a nights stay with a personal chauffeur service to the airport. The Customers vehicle was then safely stored until his return when it was personally delivered to the Customer on the terminal forecourt. Tudor Rose Meet and Greet Parking was born. Business grew to a point where all rooms were taken but Customers still wanted to

26 MARCH 2014

avail themselves of the unique parking service. Trevor rented a site only 2/3 minutes from both terminals and it wasn’t long before the car park became full and business was thriving. In 1999 came an opportunity to purchase the old Reigate Road Garage site north of the airport and after a year of negotiations and a hefty loan managed to purchase the site. The site was perfect as it was only a couple of minutes from both terminals and had the advantage of an office in the centre meaning that security was easy to manage. With considerable investment in the refurbishment of the site, it lent itself easily to providing a meet and greet parking service at a reasonable cost. Valet Parking (or meet and greet as it is sometimes known) was offered at the airport but it had always been at a considerable premium for the well off, sometimes costing three times as much as park and ride.

Collecting and delivering vehicles on the terminal forecourt meant that Customers could knock as much as 2 hours off their travelling time and eliminate the hassle and worry of getting to check-in on time. Business grew and in 2005 the acquisition of Hookwood Lodge further enhanced the range of products offered by Tudor Rose. Hookwood Lodge Hotel offers spacious, tastefully decorated en-suite bedrooms. Set in 20 acres of parkland it offers the peace and quiet of a small rural estate yet is only 3 - 4 minutes from both North and South Terminals. The same fast valet parking service that the company prides itself on is still the core of the business. Tudor Rose is an Approved Operator with Gatwick Airport, the car park holds the coveted ParkMark® award from the Association of Chief Police Officers and is ‘Buy with Confidence’ approved by Trading Standards.

A family business providing exclusive valet parking at Gatwick Airport since 1992.

aunas and steam rooms are a great way of relaxing and socialising, offering exceptional health and wellbeing benefits, from alleviating the effects of the common cold to increasing performance in endurance sports. Warmth and water is the basis for life and throughout history, people have enjoyed the benefits of bathing in heat and steam – indeed, it was traditional for the wealthy to travel afar to find thermal waters and natural springs, but until relatively recently we have rarely considered that such treats could actually be brought into our own homes.

and the type of heat and experience required.

Dröm UK specialises in conceiving and constructing beautiful bespoke rooms to suit all tastes and budgets. Let your imagination become a reality as Dröm UK’s talented team of designers create the room of your dreams. Stunning, colourful glass mosaics, corian, marble, tile or stone can be used to adorn the benches and walls in a steam room. The use of glass, including frameless glass doors, creates a unique feeling of space and openness. Aromatherapy oils create different moods and chromotherapy lighting systems can tint the steam within the room to further enhance the bathing experience.

Even where space is tight and cost an important factor, a steam shower can be easily integrated into an existing bathroom or ensuite shower room.

Sauna bathing is an activity embraced alone or with friends and family. Proving that a sauna is no longer just a wooden box, Dröm UK offers infinite variations of sauna rooms to suit individual lifestyles, the space available 12 MARCH 2014

Each detail, from the feature lighting to the ergonomicallydesigned benches, is carefully considered. Generally, saunas are constructed in traditional timbers such as Spruce, Aspen, Cedar or Alder, although a feature wall in stone or marble may be incorporated to add a different dimension. The look can be traditional or more modern, with frameless glass doors to give a greater feeling of space, while tiled exteriors may be employed to complement the tiling of bathrooms or pool areas.

Island Life

With the ever increasing thirst for open plan living, kitchens have long ago ceased to be just a place to store and prepare food. They now frequently occupy a space within the main social living area of the house where family and friends congregate.

T

he main impact this evolution of living space has had on kitchen design is the island. As the kitchen is now within the living space and not tucked away in a separate room off the hall, the users of the kitchen would prefer not to work on outside walls with their backs to their family and friends. So the island enables the kitchen to integrate fully into the living area, frequently with seating around it on one level or another. Clearly every household has different requirements for their island design (in fact people within a household often have different requirements!). The kitchen design process can often involve very many permutations of an island before it is finally signed off and there are many questions for the family to answer during this stage. Does the main cook spend more time at the hob or the sink – if the former then should the hob be on the island? Is a small sink required for washing vegetables and

washing hands during food preparation. Is a breakfast bar required and if so, for how many? How much worktop preparation space is the main cook used to? Can this be achieved within the space available. Will people be able to walk around the island if the dishwasher is open? Even the fine detail needs to be considered. For example if you want to be able to read the paper whilst eating breakfast at the bar, then a raised glass breakfast bar may not be suitable as it may not be deep enough to accommodate the breakfast and the paper! Other factors such as the location of a television need to be considered if the family wish to see the TV from the breakfast bar. At the end of the day, a prime function of a kitchen is to store food and kitchen apparatus so of course the kitchen design, and therefore the island, needs to provide for sufficient storage. Before signing off on a kitchen design, the client should always map each cupboard’s contents from the existing kitchen, into the cabinets in the new design. Island design is a pivotal element within

16 MARCH 2014

the kitchen design process and can make the difference between a perfect kitchen which will give many years of enjoyment , to a very expensive mistake. Moore By Design, based opposite Waitrose in the Hersham Centre, offers an impressive showroom with three different island layouts to view. Their key supplier, German manufacturer Beckermann offer furniture in a vast array of sizes and finishes which enables their designers to create kitchens to suit their clients. With a substantial online gallery accessed via their website or by requesting a link to be emailed, it is possible to see just a small selection of actual client kitchens which are far more beneficial to most clients than brochure images.

impact as well as this the tall units have been built into a stud wall to give then a slim stream-lined appearance, the doors to the tall larder cupboards are mirrored to reflect light back into the kitchen and the plinth is mirrored to give the impression that the kitchen is floating.

The kitchen occupies a large open plan space with doors that lead out onto the magnificent garden. The Client needed a kitchen that would sell the house to prospective purchasers.

The worktop is a light colored composite and it has been returned down to the floor at either end of the sink run.

Therefore, the design would have to be bold to have maximum impact on possible end users. The house is in an Art Deco style, so we chose to uses this in our design, we utilized materials that would be sympathetic with the sumptuous Art Deco feel of the house, high gloss lacquered veneers, glass, mirror and wenge stained oak. The stained oak panels are used to frame the furniture and coupled with the square stepped cornice they give a sharp crisp outline to the kitchen which is perfectly complimented by the soft curves of the island. At Finewood we have our own manufacturing facilities at our Head-office in Hampshire, this enabled us to produce all the bespoke curved work that makes the kitchen so unique. The curved island has two curved drums at either end in wenge stained oak and a curved glass breakfast bar that separates the cooking space from the living space. The central section of the tall units has been raised for maximum 18 MARCH 2014

The two glazed dresser units at either end of the sink run add to the kitchens symmetry and drawer your attention to the large window between them, with it’s stunning views out onto the garden. As you would expect of a house with such a high specification all the appliances are top of the range and include two ovens two warming drawers a combination microwave and an integrated coffee maker as well as impressive chefs tap on the sink run and the tap on the prep sink on the island the kitchen also has a boiling water tap. The end result we believe is a kitchen that incorporates all the glamour and sophistication of the Art Deco style without compromising on the functionality of the design. FLOOD? What Flood? After nearly being nearly washed away on Christmas Day CPL Bathrooms and CPL Kitchens are still fighting on and business is flourishing

J

ust 7 days later they were open and ready for business. The showroom is still not completely back to its beautiful self but they are slowly getting there. As the largest Independent bathroom showroom in the area with over 50 displays on show there was a lot of floor space to mop up! “It was quite a shock on Christmas Day to come down and find the whole area underwater but thankfully there was just

water damage to the walls and skirting and the damage to the actual pieces was limited” said Operation Manager Gary Pusey. The showroom is a main dealer for luxury brands Villeroy and Boch, Hansgrohe, Matki, Keuco and many more. “Most customers are not even aware of what happened and those that are have been very supportive and business continues to grow. We pride ourselves on supplying the best products and

offering excellent service, a little bit of rain isn’t going to stop us from doing that” commented Gary. To see the showroom in all its glory and celebrate their post flood recovery, CPL Bathrooms have offered the first 10 customers who come in a for a full* bathroom design and quote a bottle of Champagne! (A Full Bathroom design covers WC, sink and bath/shower & brassware).

‘Reface Not Replace’ Experts Move Out Of The Kitchen

Granite Transformations announces a new website, corporate brochure and additional services which broadens its refurbishment options to include bathrooms, utility areas and outdoor living areas.

K

itchen cabinet refacing, where the original units are upgraded with brand new worktop overlays, replacement doors and drawer fronts, is booming in the United States and this money-saving interior design trend has caught on strongly here too. So much so that kitchen makeover experts Granite Transformations, who pioneered the ‘reface not replace’ trend in this country, are broadening out their refurbishment options to include bathroom remodelling, utility rooms, garden buildings, outside living areas and patio barbecues. This expanded makeover portfolio, as well as exciting new products like mosaic splashbacks and hard flooring, are covered in their new range brochure, available by ringing 0800 044 5393 or downloading from their brand new, informative website at www. granitetransformations.co.uk Despite the name, Granite Transformations are not just about transforming kitchens with their luxurious granite-based work surfaces. Their topselling worktop is actually recycled glass, made from the used beer, wine and mineral water bottles that we discard, and they recycle. There are woodgrain and acrylic-faced replacement doors too, in a host of fashionable styles and colours. Whilst in the pipeline are earth-toned decorative surfaces produced from porcelain, one of the hardest substances on Earth, again made from recycled content, this time factory-fresh rejects rather than used sinks and bathtubs.

22 MARCH 2014

Part of the Trend Group, the Italian-based international tilemaker known for its designer mosaics and handsome hard agglomerate flooring, Granite Transformations continually tap into their parent company’s product catalogue for further design inspiration. This includes their inimitable ‘mosaics on a mattress’ collection, for fitting over kitchen and bathroom tiles as splashbacks or shower liners, and elegant click-together flooring planks in quartz, granite and recycled glass finishes, for laying in kitchens and bathrooms. Nor is a wide choice of refacing materials, now extending to over 80 work surfaces, door and mosaic colours, the whole story. Through their growing network of showrooms and associated workshops, Granite Transformations’ tailor-make all their makeover materials off-site, then have them professionally installed by their factory-trained fitters, avoiding the mess, hassle and builder’s waste associated with new fitted units, and completing most projects in a day or so. With a slick makeover, homeowners can also look to save up to 50 per cent over new fitted kitchen and bathroom installations, justifying the growing trend to ‘reface not replace’. To request a copy of the new Granite Transformations range brochure, call 01372 722272, email enquiries@granitetransformations.co.uk or visit www.granitetransformations.co.uk/epsom Epsom Showroom: 157 High Street, Epsom, Surrey KT19 8EW. Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy WITH

A

new natural anti ageing facial rejuvenation treatment from The Cosmetic Doctors Company. Platelet Rich Plasma therapy is a completely natural, anti-ageing rejuvenation treatment that uses a small amount of your own blood to improve your skin’s texture and reduce lines & wrinkles. It is a tried and tested procedure within the medical profession that has been used widely in various fields of medicine such as dental, heart surgery and most commonly to treat sports injuries.

is re-injected into the skin. These platelets then release growth factors, which stimulate healing, skin repair and regeneration.

Sometimes referred to as Vampire Facelift or Dracula Therapy because of the use of the patient’s own blood. Don’t be mislead though this is not a procedure to be squeamish about; it is similar to a routine blood test and not in any sense a ‘bloody’ procedure.

Is a PRP Facelift suitable for me? If you are looking for a more natural approach to facial rejuvenation then PRP can definitely help improve your skin texture and tone, and address more specific anti-ageing skin conditions.

How does PRP therapy work? The procedure involves taking a small amount of the patient’s own. This blood sample is then placed in a centrifuge in order to separate red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Once separated the platelet-rich plasma can then be used in a number of ways. It can be directly injected using ultrafine needles as a form of mesotherapy; it can be mixed with hyaluronic acid filler (HA) to boost the proven beneficial stimulatory effects of HA; or applied directly to the surface of the skin immediately after medical micro-needling (derma-roller).

What happens during a PRP treatment? After your initial consultation, some anaesthetic cream is applied to the area of skin being treated. This is then left to activate whilst a small amount of blood is taken from your arm; just like having a routine blood test at your GPs. Once this has been put through the TropoCells System, the platelet rich plasma is then re-injected into the chosen area. In total the procedure should take no longer than an hour.

Dr. Forrester uses the TropoCells System that cleverly allows the maximum delivery of growth factors, targeting the site by stimulating platelet activation as soon as it

How safe is PRP? PRP is one of the safest, non-allergic procedures on the market today, dating back to the 1950s, with over 3,000 medical studies proving its effectiveness. The chances of having an allergic reaction are zero, as the injections are autologous because they come from your own body.

PRP Is effective on Lines and wrinkles Rejuvenation of tired skin Delicate areas such as fine skin under the eyes Neck and chest Hands Acne scars Stretch marks

60 MARCH 2014

How quick is the recovery? PRP is a painless procedure with no real recovery time needed. Your face may feel a little tender straight after the treatment but any soreness should have disappeared by the next day. A small amount of bruising may sometimes occur but this subsides quickly. As PRP uses your own blood there is no chance of an adverse or allergic reaction How quickly will I see a result? Results can be seen within 3-4 weeks and the amount of treatments needed will depend on what you are trying to achieve. Can I combine PRP with other treatments? PRP can be combined with other treatments such as INTRAcel, Deramlux or hyaluronic acid filler to stimulate a natural, beneficial biological effect. Overview In terms of procedures, it has to be said that The PRP Facelift offers a wide range of benefits to those clients opting for a more natural approach to rejuvenation. The slight risks that normally accompany any kind of cosmetic procedure, don’t apply with PRP. It’s safe, nonallergic and with very smooth recovery.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy Completely natural Uses your own blood cells No adverse or allergic reaction Gentle and effective - will not look ‘overdone’ Safe, effective and natural rejuvenation. Increases skin’s thickness and vitality

Vanquish: The hottest new fat busting treatment just launched Zap that fat! A new leader emerges. Created by medical device experts to treat the abdomen and flanks. Labelled a breakthrough, this device uses focussed radiofrequency to zap abdomen

fat without ever touching your body. The sensation is very comfortable and warm but the underlying fat cells are getting a work out. The intense heat generated in the underlying fat deposits causes apoptosis (cellular death) of the fat cells. Because the device kills fat

cells themselves, not just within the cells, the results are long lasting. As an introductory offer we include a free Ultratone tummy lift to tighten loose, flabby, lax skin, giving you contours and a great shape. Acacia dealbata

F

or those of you fed up with the never ending rain and wanting something a bit exotic, Acacia could be the ideal choice. Acacia dealbata is commonly known as ‘Mimosa’ or Silver Wattle, there are other varieties of acacia also known as mimosa, over 1000 species, however this is the only commonly available one in this country. It is generally found to be the hardiest variety in our climate. For those of you wondering, this is the ‘mimosa’ whose flowers are used by florists. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it their prestigious Award of Garden Merit an award given to only the select few. The plant has small fern like leaves, which are green to silvery green, variation determined usually by the source of the plants, as they are usually raised from seed. The leaves are evergreen which makes it a valuable addition to the garden. Acacia should not be confused with the ‘False acacia’ which is a distantly related deciduous

64 MARCH 2014

tree, Robinia pseudoacacia, grown for it’s golden leaves. In Southern counties the flowers are produced in late winter to early spring depending on temperatures. The flowers are yellow to cream and appear as small pompon shapes, although in reality this is a cluster of almost petal free flowers; these clusters are borne in large terminal clusters at the end of the branches. The flowers have very strong sweet scent which will permeate the garden on warm, still winter days. In this country the mimosa is usually grown as large shrubs or as standard or multi-stem trees. The one drawback to this tree is that it is only semi hardy. In protected environments they are usually hardy, however it is true to say that it tends to be a combination of factors that combine, to cause failure, as I have seen trees in open exposed sites thrive whilst others in more protected sites succumb. As the trees mature they seem to become more resistant to cold weather, with young plants much more

H OUS E & GA R D E N

sensitive to cold. The trees are tolerant of several degrees of frost and can cope with temperatures down to -10 degrees centigrade for short periods, with records of some surviving down to -19’C, although this is exceptional. If you are unlucky to have your acacia cut down by cold weather, it should re-grow from the base as a multi-stem, so all is not lost! Acacias make excellent screening trees, commonly used to provide screening from new developments in established gardens. The aesthetic characteristics of acacia plants, in conjunction with their screening qualities, makes them a considerable alternative to artificial fences and walls. These trees are very quick growing once established often putting on in excess of 3-6 foot a year. This is best restricted to avoid branches snapping in high winds. This rate of growth is similar to that of more commonly used conifers, however they give a softer appearance, which is less oppressive and are easily maintained by pruning after flowering. This rate of growth dramatically exceeds that of other evergreen trees, such as photinia and bay, but similar to that of eucalyptus. Mature trees can grow up to 20- 30 foot in this country, but rarely exceed this height as frost usually stops taller growth. When grown as a standard tree they generally have 6-7 foot of clear stem with the head above this, which makes it ideal for placing at the back of a border against a fence, as the foliage will be above the fence line, allowing some under planting of the area. A further feature of these trees is they have relatively shallow fibrous roots which mean that they can be safely planted alongside fences. To establish trees quickly they are best planted in neutral to slightly acid soils. When planted they should be watered at least weekly throughout the spring and summer months, until established, established mature trees are well adapted to summer drought. Outdoors acacia suffer from relatively few pests and disease, although if grown indoors they become susceptible to many of the greenhouse pests.

The genuine benefits offered by “A” rated replacement UPVC windows What are the benefits of having double or triple glazed UPVC replacement windows fitted, rather than say aluminium, composite or hardwood double glazed windows?

I

n addition, why would property owners in Beds, Berks, Bucks, Hants, Herts, Middlesex, Oxon and Surrey choose Hazlemere Windows bespoke “A” rated UPVC replacement windows over others available in the South of England? Whilst less thermally efficient, less expensive UPVC windows rated B or C rated are available in the UK, Hazlemere only specify, supply and fit high quality “A” rated UK manufactured UPVC windows. Infact all Hazlemere UPVC double glazed and triple glazed UPVC casement, as well as tilt and turn windows are A Rated as standard. Their vertically sliding double glazed UPVC sash windows are also “A” rated.

Each UPVC casement window is individually made to order from scratch (nothing in stock), so every Hazlemere UPVC window is tailor made to each aperture. All side opening vents have high security dog bolts and an easy clean/fire escape hinge is fitted as standard, plus all opening vents on Hazlemere’s “A” rated UPVC windows have a lockable night vent facility. All Hazlemere Windows UPVC frames are made from the finest extrusions and feature welded joints with an attractive sculptured frame appearance inside and out. They have a 70mm deep multi chambered thermally broken frame, high security locking system and dog bolts on

all opening vents. Internal glazing beads prevent removal of sealed units/panels from the outside by unwanted intruders. Toughened safety glass to BS6206 is fitted to all low-level glazing, and windows within 300mm of any door, or 800mm of any internal floor level. All Hazlemere UPVC windows are constructed from high quality materials to ensure they offer excellent levels of thermal performance, plus both the 28mm wide double glazed sealed units and 36mm wide triple glazed sealed units reduce noise pollution by a slightly greater degree than standard 24mm wide aluminium or hardwood double glazed sealed units. 66 MARCH 2014

H OUS E & GA R D E N

Hazlemere’s 28mm wide UPVC standard double glazed sealed unit is made up of 4mm/20mm/4mm, using a combination of low iron outer float or toughened clear or obscure safety glass, a black Swiss V warm edge spacer bar, 90% Argon filled, and an inner soft coat float or toughened glass pane. This double glazing specification achieves a centre-pane U Value of 1.2 W/m2K, and when tested with Hazlemere’s UPVC thermally broken reinforced frames achieve a combined “A” rated U-Value of 1.4 W/m2K Hazlemere’s 36mm wide UPVC triple glazed unit is 4mm/12mm/4mm/12mm/4mm, a combination of low iron outer, then a toughened middle glass pane as standard (to reduce any likelihood of cracking due

to sharp temperature differentials between internal heat and external cold), two black Swiss V warm edge spacer bars, 90% Argon filled, and an inner softcoat glass pane. This triple glazing specification achieves a centrepane U value of 0.9 W/m2K, and when tested with Hazlemere’s “A” rated UPVC triple glazed windows achieve a combined U-Value of 1.0 W/m2K. Like most high quality UPVC double glazing systems, all Hazlemere’s energy rated UPVC windows are available in real woodgrain effect single or dual colour foil finishes, with front doors, back doors, French doors and sliding patio doors in matching profiles. The real benefits of replacement UPVC

windows are simply therefore that they are more thermally efficient than aluminium or hardwood windows, are warmer to the touch than aluminium windows and usually cost far less. Rare Plant Fair at Birtley House, Bramley

In this day of multinationals and ubiquitous garden centres, it is satisfying to see the independent grower holding his own in the face of enormous competition.

O

f course, the small growers need as many opportunities as possible to show off their home-grown-plants. They can choose local Markets, charity plant sales, and any and all of the ‘Big’ Shows like Chelsea, Hampton Court, Gardeners World and so on. Rare Plant Fairs was launched over twenty years ago in Bristol to give the buying public and passionate gardeners a chance to purchase rare and unusual plants that were not readily available in the garden Centre. The success of these shows today illustrates that this need is still there and it is growing year by year. Rare Plant Fairs provide a venue for sales at some of the oldest and loveliest Houses and Gardens in the country. Also, each Nursery with its own variety of plants is listed on the RPF website www.rareplantfair.co.uk and this helps generate more trade with mail order. The main purpose overall is to introduce buyer to seller in a tranquil and agreeable setting. Luckily, growers can rely on an army of discerning plant lovers all over the South of England, who have signed up with RPF over the years, for free notification of events. Why not join this friendly (and knowledgeable) crowd! Just make contact through the website or Facebook, or even Twitter, and we’ll make sure you are kept informed of every show throughout the year.-It’s all free. There will be fifteen locations in the South of England in 2014-all of them on Sundays and all offering modest Refreshment. Entry prices are around £5 per person, with children under 16 free of charge. Dogs on leads are allowed only at some locations, so it is a good idea to check for this before setting out.

Much of the stonework, some pieces dating back to the 19th century, is beautifully weathered or lichened. .

the house and garden became absorbed in the history of garden ornaments and statuary. Sally started buying a few antique and vintage ornamental pieces at auctions and the local boot fairs and Rupert became involved, initially to help with lifting some of the heavier items before becoming increasingly interested himself in sourcing and selling these objects.
