Surrey county cricketer Rory Burns was today named in the shortlist of six players nominated for the LV= County Championship Breakthrough Player Award. Launched by County Championship title sponsors, LV=, the award is now in its second year after Yorkshire CCC opening batsman Joe Root claimed the inaugural title in 2012.

Surrey County Council can reveal the 96 mile stage will take place on Saturday, September 21, starting in Epsom and finishing in a final climb up Guildford High Street. Previous competitors include former world champion and Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish and Olympic gold medallist and Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins.

The Thames Challenge Row will start in Lechlade in Oxfordshire and finish in Weybridge, Surrey. This stretch of river (116 miles) will be tackled by ten volunteers in two, coxed, quadruple sculling boats and a double scull.

Setting off on Thursday 15th August, the rowers will be camping overnight along the river and aiming to complete the challenge in three days, arriving back at Weybridge Ladies Rowing Club on Saturday 17th August.

SOLANKI IS BATTING FOR CHARITY

S

urrey County cricketer Vikram Solanki today joins a host of high profile cricketers in supporting ‘Batting for Charity’, an initiative organised by County Championship sponsors LV=. The charity initiative will see Solanki display an LV= sticker on his bats for the remainder of the cricket season and in return, LV= will donate £250 to the PCA Benevolent Fund, as nominated by Solanki.

The PCA Benevolent Fund is part of the Professional Cricketers Association’s commitment to helping current and former players and their dependants in times of hardship, upheaval or to assist them adjust to the world beyond the game.

Jason Ratcliffe, spokesperson for the PCA Benevolent Fund commented: “We are very grateful for the donation from LV=, it will make a real difference to the work that we do.

To have Vikram championing our cause on the cricket field is just brilliant and everyone

involved with the charity will be cheering Vikram on for the rest of the season.”

Intended to recognise the most promising young player in cricket’s County Championship, the award is testament to the next generation of future England Test cricketers playing in the domestic competition; as Root has gone on to prove.

Burns’ competition for the award comes from Leicestershire batsman Shiv Thakor, Yorkshire’s Gary Ballance, Durham leg spinner Scott Borthwick, Sussex batsman Luke Wells and Northamptonshire bowler David Willey.

An esteemed four man panel put together the shortlist of six nominees for the award, based on their performances in the LV= County Championship so far this season as well the last month of last season.

England captain and current Managing Director or Partnerships at the ECB Mike Gatting, PCA Chairman Mark Wallace, cricket writer John Stern and former England cricketer Alec Stewart.

Escape to Claremont Hidden in the heart of Surrey and within easy reach of London, the green oasis of Claremont Landscape Garden is a delightful place to escape everyday life and enjoy simple pleasures with family and friends. By David McClenaghan

O

nce the pleasure grounds of some of the richest and most powerful people in the country, today the National Trust opens Claremont all year round for everyone, so you can follow in the footsteps of princesses and relax in beautiful surroundings any day of the week.

There are many unique and unexpected features to discover, including the tranquil serpentine lake, large turf amphitheatre, grotto, Camellia Terrace and on some days the Belvedere Tower.

In the eighteenth century Claremont was among the most famous landscape gardens in Europe and it’s not hard to see why; many of the great names in garden history played a part in the creation of the estate. Over the years Sir John Vanbrugh, Charles Bridgeman, William Kent and ‘Capability’ Brown were all involved in putting their own distinctive stamp on the pleasure grounds.

As a result Claremont has always been gifted

with stunning scenery, making it the perfect playground for royalty. Princess Charlotte was “delighted” to take the garden as part of her marital home, while as a child the future Queen Victoria was often to be found passing the hours running and jumping amongst the flowers.

Queen Victoria later described her time in the garden as “the happiest days” of her “otherwise dull childhood” and there is still plenty to keep the family entertained, from the children’s play area to the Thatched Cottage, a Victorian refuge filled with fun toys, games, picnic rugs and dressing up clothes. Who will win when you visit the 9-pins bowling alley behind the amphitheatre?

You’ll always find something special on offer, whether you’re looking to take advantage of the packed programme of events or simply wish to have a peaceful picnic by the side of the lake. If the Belvedere Tower is open when you visit then make sure to run to the

top, where on a clear day you can take in extraordinary views for several miles in every direction. If you’re lucky you might just spot a few well known London landmarks.

No visit to Claremont would be complete without popping into the tea-room. Tuck in to a tempting array of homemade cakes, breakfasts and light lunches or simply rest on the terrace with a refreshing drink, then browse the small shop to find the perfect souvenir of your visit.

Weybridge Ladies tackle ‘The Thames Challenge’!

Twelve intrepid rowers from Weybridge Ladies Amateur Rowing Club are taking on The Thames this summer, to raise money for charity

T

he Thames Challenge Row will start in Lechlade in Oxfordshire and finish in Weybridge, Surrey. Setting off on Thursday 15th August, the rowers will be camping overnight along the river and aiming to complete the challenge in three days, arriving back at Weybridge Ladies Rowing Club on Saturday 17th August. This is a real physical challenge for the ladies involved, who would usually row about 5 miles in an average outing. Instead, they will be covering almost 40 miles per day.

Laurily Adams, Weybridge Ladies club captain says: “This is the biggest endurance challenge we’ve ever faced as rowers. We are attempting to row four marathons in three days!”

The teams will be supported along the route by willing volunteers, friends and family and also by Abingdon and Henley Rowing Clubs who are generously allowing us to use their club grounds for overnight boat storage and camping.

The twelve rowers have decided to raise money for two worthy causes: Arthritis Research UK and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

For various, personal reasons, these charities are important to all of the rowers. Two of the

team have returned to competitive rowing after confronting difficult struggles with arthritis.

Weybridge Ladies are also trying to raise money to help fund a club development project. The facilities at the club are in desperate need of refurbishment and modernisation to support the ever-increasing interest in rowing as a competitive and recreational sport. We welcome all new members, both experienced rowers and complete novices and we would like to improve what the club can offer to existing and new members. The club offers an important facility to the local community and it is vital to maintain this. We are hoping to raise some money for re-development through on-the-spot public donations on the river bank and tow path in the next few weeks and during the challenge itself. There will be club members promoting the challenge every Saturday morning at Weybridge Ladies Rowing Club, until the rowers start their journey in August.

Whilst the Weybridge Ladies are delighted with the level of support already shown by friends and family on their ‘Virgin money giving’ fundraising website, they are enthusiastically seeking additional financial support from local business.

n these straightened times, adding to your watch collection may not seem to be a priority but the continued year-on-year growth of the UK watch market is evidence that many of us are doing just that. If we are to embrace this fascination with watches, there are still ways to save money, or maybe just to spend it more wisely. The last two years has seen explosive growth in the pre-owned watch market. Following the pattern set by the automotive industry, more consumers are realising that they have never bought a car as its first owner so why shouldn’t they take the same attitude with watches. This way the buyer can avoid the initial hit of VAT and depreciation enabling them to save money on their intended purchase or move up to a brand that they would otherwise be unable to afford.

Once you stray from the watch brands’ official dealer network, there are risks of course. There are the watch equivalent of the backstreet car lot, selling pieces of dubious origin, put together from a variety of parts which may, or may not, be what they seem. The Rolex Daytona is one of the most sought after sports chronographs in the world and their second hand values reflect this. If you want a Rolex-made case and bracelet but are happy with an ETA movement then the Tudor Oystersdate Chronograph is the budget option. Tour of Britain Cycle Race

Surrey will host the penultimate stage of this year’s Tour of Britain when the race sweeps the UK this September

S

urrey County Council can reveal the 96 mile stage will take place on Saturday, September 21, starting in Epsom and finishing in a final climb up Guildford High Street. The rider line up has not yet been announced but previous competitors include former world champion and Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish and Olympic gold medallist and Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins.

This year’s Surrey stage is even tougher than 2012 with daunting climbs over the first half of the race before some flat-out sprints in the run up to Guildford. The King of the Mountain climbs and sprint locations will be announced in May. John Furey, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member of Transport and Environment, said: “This will be the second year running Surrey has welcomed the Tour of Britain and once again the bone juddering Guildford High Street will prove a scintillating finish for both riders and spectators.

“We proved last year with the Olympic cycle races and the Tour of Britain that Surrey is adept at hosting high profile sporting events.

There is a huge appetite for cycling in Surrey and I have no doubt our county will be the highlight of the Tour. Record numbers in the event’s history turned out in Surrey last year, some 225,000.”

Last year’s Tour of Britain generated almost £7.2 million for Surrey’s economy and was watched by almost one million television viewers on each of the event’s eight days. This year’s race will again be televised.

Something For Everyone At The Lions Classic Car Show

I

f you’ve seen a number of classic cars driving through the southeast on the third Sunday in August and wondered where they were going, chances are they were heading to Cranleigh in Surrey. For 12 years the Cranleigh & District Lions Club has been organising a Classic Car Show and Autojumble, now amongst the biggest one day classic car shows in southern England. In 2001 just 100 vehicles were on show, now the show has grown to over 1,700 classic vehicles of all types, from a BSA Bantam motorcycle to an AEC Matador flatbed truck weighing in at a massive 7.75 tons.

And talking about lunch, a variety of hot and cold food will be available plus the popular hog roast. To slake your thirst, tea, coffee and a variety of soft drinks are available and for those who like to relax with something a little stronger, a bar offers a range of beverages including a selection of local beers.

The oldest, and possibly maddest, vehicle is a rare 1907 Berliet (who were taken over by Citroen in 1967) fitted with an 8.2 litre Curtiss engine from a First World War plane. This fantastic racing car has competed at Silverstone, Goodwood and Brooklands and can be seen at the Cranleigh Showground on Sunday, August 18th.

Brooklands Museum Trust are back in force for a fourth year with a wide selection of vehicles and joining them will be Chief BA Pilot Captain Mike Bannister, who has flown over 7,000 supersonic hours on Concorde, including the last commercial flight in October 2003.

Mike will be on hand for Brooklands’ arena displays and talking to visitors to the Brooklands stand (head for the red Routemaster double-decker bus).

Whilst most visitors to the show are happy to take their time wandering amongst the lines of classic cars and watching the arena displays, there are others who like to use up a little more energy, and for them the popular and exhilarating bungee trampolines are perfect, however not after a heavy lunch.

While you sit down to relax and enjoy your food and drink, you will be entertained by the Logical Tickle Band who will play easy listening music throughout the day.

This year’s Classic Car Show is on Sunday 18th August 2013 at the Cranleigh Showground from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Entry is £6, under 16s free. A show programme listing vehicles on display costs £3 and there is plenty of free parking available at the showground.

The 40 members of the Cranleigh & District Lions club organise the Classic Car Show, and other events during the year, to raise money that supports local organisations, families and individuals that need some help, as well as national and international Lions projects. Thanks to the generosity of the people that attend events, Cranleigh Lions distributed a massive £41,285 last year and all proceeds from the Classic Car Show will be put to good use locally and further afield.

Summer pay!

At long last we can at least say that we have had a summer, however long or short it turns out to be.

W

hat we now need to do is make the most of it by ensuring that our plants have the best conditions for growth. This involves ensuring that plants are fed to ensure the largest flowers and longest flowering seasons. I’m often asked which fertiliser people should use, in many cases I feel the differences between them are overstated. At this time of year I would recommend liquid feeding as this ensures that the nutrients are readily available to the plants, as opposed

to using granular feeds which generally are better for spring application as the nutrients are released more slowly. As far as which liquid feed to use, on a personal basis I tend to use tomato food which is rich in Potassium which is good for flowering, although if available I would be equally happy using Miracle Gro or Phostrogen.

As well as feeding the other essential to life is water. I realise that some will think that this isn’t being environmentally friendly;

however watering is essential for newly planted specimens, although watering well every other day should be enough and with

a blaze of colour, whether your tastes are for yellows, oranges or reds, there is something to brighten your life.

In addition to colour don’t forget what I said last month about the use of foliage to highlight the best of your plants. In addition to the ferns that I mentioned last month there are other excellent foliage plants such as hostas, whose large leaves come in a range of shades of green and yellow, ideal for highlighting those more vibrant colours.

For those of you who never got around to planting out the usual bedding plants due to the poor spring, there is still time to brighten up the garden.

An equally enchanting but taller variety is Rudbeckia Herbstsonne a bright yellow flower with a greeny yellow cone centre.

Slow down on your quick Summer getaway!

f you are planning a holiday or short break in the UK, then it is advisable to consider your travel arrangements. Poor weather can put people off making journeys by road and therefore as soon as the weather improves, traffic does tend to increase particularly over bank holiday weekends. In 2011, the AA predicted that 16 million people would hit the road over the August bank holiday weekend. Last year, the number was not as high due to the dreadful weather.

In the melee of getting the family organised and out of the door, it is very easy to forget that driving a vehicle on the road in the UK is governed by law and if you commit a motoring offence, you risk losing your licence or worse!

Below are some helpful tips to avoid committing a UK motoring offence, to ensure your holiday is one to remember, for the right reasons.

All vehicles that you drive must be insured.

Do not assume that you are insured to drive any vehicle just because your insurance cover is fully comprehensive. Always check your

cover. It is an offence to drive a vehicle without insurance and if convicted, you could receive 6 to 8 penalty points and a fine or a disqualification and a fine.

If you have a car accident (no matter how minor) you must report it to your insurance company. Failure to do so could invalidate your insurance leaving you personally liable for any damage that you have caused. This could be expensive.

It is all too easy to clock up penalty points with minor speeding misdemeanours but accumulating 12 penalty points within 3 years can lead to a driving ban unless you have an exceptional hardship case to successfully argue.

The UK takes drink driving seriously and if

you are convicted of the offence, you will receive a mandatory disqualification of at least 12 months unless you can show that you committed the offence due to special reasons, such as an emergency situation.
