EVENTS t long last Guildford’s very own Philharmonic Orchestra will be making their debut performance at G Live. On Friday 18 November the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra will be amazing local audiences with a brilliant repertoire to firmly cement their reputation as one of Guildford’s greatest assets. Since the closure of the Civic Hall in 2004 the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra has visited other venues and areas but now they are back where they belong in the heart of Guildford. In mid-July they helped sound engineers at G Live test the acoustics by playing a range of music to test the systems but now they are centre stage in their first fully-fledged concert on the G Live stage. Playing A Gala for Guildford in the style of Last Night of the Proms, the Guildford Philharmonic will be playing a wide variety of music such as Gershwin’s American in Paris, Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue & Riffs, Respighi’s Pines of Rome as well as the well-known Last Night of the Proms classis Jerusalem. They will be conducted by Stephen Bell and led by Britain’s most popular soprano Lesley Garret.

Merlin the magician will be on hand to help Santa keep the children entertained. In our shop there’s enough choice for you to fill everyone’s Christmas stocking this year, with classic confectionery and plenty of wildlife themed gifts. Tempt your taste buds throughout the weekend with

special Christmas tastings of wonderfully old-fashioned sweets and chocolates. Gifts from London Wetland Centre’s shop won’t just delight whoever is unwrapping them on Christmas day: when you shop here you’re also contributing towards vital conservation work in the UK and around the world. Once your shopping is complete take a stroll around the scenic walkways set amongst the lakes, meadows and ponds of this 105 acre wildlife oasis. Enjoy the frost glistening on the trees and watch the ducks hunting for their own version of Christmas dinner! You can enjoy your own lunch in our Water’s Edge Café or relax over a coffee and mince pie. Santa and the huskies are very popular so you may have to queue. christmas Pantomime

AN EXPLOSIVE FUSION OF EXOTIC SPICES, A RICH AMALGAM OF EVOCATIVE AROMAS, A TANTALIZING CONTRAST OF TEXTURES AND TASTES. WELCOME TO THE CULINARY WORLD OF…

Matahari

Cuisine of the Far East

ACCENTUATING A FUSION OF MALAYSIAN & FAR-EASTERN CULINARY DELIGHTS

‘Matahari’ lends its name from the Malay language meaning the SUN. In the warm and friendly ambiance of our rustic and cozy restaurant, we aim to bring you a FUSION of the various cooking styles of the mystical Far-East with particular emphasis on Malaysian, Chinese, Thai and Japanese favourites. Malaysian cuisine itself is a combination of the cooking methods of three nations " Indian, Chinese and Malay. These have merged to make a unique, harmonious blend that is an identifying characteristic

3 8 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 1

of the cuisine of this tropical peninsular. The use of Indian spices such as cumin, tumeric and chilies, the Chinese influence of soy sauce, garlic and ginger, the Malay contribution of ‘sambal’ & a blend of other exotic spices and the various cooking styles of the Portuguese, Dutch and British during their years of occupation there is evident in authentic Malaysian style dishes. Thai food is rich in texture and characterised by flavours such as the citrus-limes, basil leaves, fresh coriander and coconut milk. An important ingredient

in Thai style cooking is a mild fish sauce that is central as the main savoury flavouring.

Winner of the ‘Best Overall Restaurant’ title at the prestigious Guildford Dining Awards

The cuisine of Japan has enjoyed an unprecedented boom in popularity, perhaps largely due to the healthy nature of their dishes. The use of seafood, especially fish, and vegetables such as seaweed is central to the art of preparing Japanese cuisine. We hope the above introduction will cast light on the fusion concept of our unique cooking style and awaken your desire for an exclusive culinary experience.

Performed by the cast from The Panto Company, racegoers can enjoy the popular production of Dick Whittington. Four shows will take part during the day in the Esher Hall, where racegoers can watch as the hero journeys to London to seek his fortune, 4 4 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 1

Sandown Park also welcomes for the first time children’s writer and illustrator Judith Kerr who has created picture books such as the Mog the cat Series of books and ‘The Tiger who came to Tea’ and acclaimed novels for older children such as the autobiographical ‘When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit’ which is an account of her and

her family’s journey across Europe escaping Hitler’s Germany before the Second World War. As a special treat, there will be a unique opportunity to meet Judith at the racecourse where she will be available to sign a selection of all her books. This race meeting also offers a unique shopping event where you will find a wonderful collection of goods from around the world. The Travelling Souk prides itself on selecting only the best stallholders to exhibit and there will be a wide selection of tempting stalls selling sensational products from beautiful jewellery and clothing to practical and stylish home ware as well as a great selection of gifts for Christmas and birthdays alike. Children can enjoy the chance to visit Santa in his Grotto where all young visitors will be able to choose a complimentary gift from the Lucky Dip and make their final Christmas gift wish. Don’t forget children under 18 enjoy free entry (accompanied by an adult) and there is a complimentary crèche available during the day.

After racing, visitors will have the chance to listen and join in singing some festive Christmas Carols with the ‘New London Singers’, one of London’s premier vocal ensembles and conducted by the legendary Ivor Settlefield. They have performed at many top London Venues and have won multiple prizes in national and international competitions. The Tingle Creek Christmas Festival is widely credited as one of the racing calendar’s top events and the demanding Sandown Park course attracts many of the very best horses and jockeys. The feature race of the two days is the Grade 1 sportingbet.com Tingle Creek Steeplechase on the Saturday, named in honour of one of the greatest twomile chasers of all time.

The day appeals to all ages, both racing and non racing fans alike and is undoubtedly a great way to share the magic of the Festive Season. To book tickets please call Sandown Park on 01372 47 00 47 or visit www.sandown.co.uk.

The Managing Director of Prestige Asset Finances saw a gap in the market for comfortable lending against valuables. His system works well; customers don’t need to suffer the painful experience of going through relentless credit check and employment details or the ultimate misery of having to sell their much loved item. ‘Prestige Asset Finance was established in Jan 2009, when I started to see an increase in the need for this type of business.

Most of our clients are asset rich but cash poor. In desperate times, I am able to bridge their financial gap for them, whilst they decide what to do in the long term’, James Constantinou, Managing Director. A Prestige Asset loan can be a short term loan for up to 12 months and can be arranged for any amount between £100 through to £1,000,000. He found himself in an unfortunate position just as he was nearing completion on a property development, the banks called in his loan. He was able to borrow 50k from Prestige, which enabled him to market his property and sell in his own time, thus averting financial disaster and ruin.

Ethical Elegance The unveiling of Jon Dibben’s debut Fairtrade design made a lasting impact. The distinctive white gold ring, with its striking spray of stones, was showcased at London Jewellery Week in June, and was made using gold from the first batch of certified Fairtrade metal to enter the country, originating from the Cotapata mining co-operative in Bolivia. It features eight rare, seagreen Tourmalines from Nigeria, marquise cut in graduating sizes. “It was a design that had been slowly shaping in my mind since 5 4 N OV E M E B E R 2 0 1 1

finding the main stone,” says Jon. “The timings just seemed right to make this our first ring in this very precious metal. I’m really happy with it. For such a strong design, it still looks very beautiful and feminine when worn.”

New Designs The success of the design was followed by other, complementary designs in Fairtrade white gold, again using sea green marquise tourmalines, and in Jon’s trademark organically inspired style.

“There have been two strong themes in my work over the past few years. Marquise cut stones, which lend themselves to floral and leaf designs with a very soft style; and my ‘Meadow’ rings, which also have a very natural feel, and have become really popular. The initial, quite dramatic design was inspired by summer flowers in a pasture near my home, and I’ve developed it in some beautiful colour combinations.” Three of his recent Fairtrade designs have followed the ‘Meadow’ theme, though two

use autumnal rather than spring tones, in red and yellow gold, with rich coloured gemstones, including a plum tourmaline and a dark orange spessartite garnet.

Inspiring Initiatives But it’s not only in colour that progressions have been made. Jon’s commitment to the Fairtrade and Fairmined initiative has developed with the use of ecologically mined gold in his designs. No toxic chemicals are used in the extraction of the gold, with an emphasis

on minimal environmental impact. These pieces have an additional Eco mark alongside the dual stamp of the Fairtrade and Fairmined marks, stamped by the London Assay office. “I want people to appreciate our work for the quality of design and workmanship, not because it is made from ethically sourced materials; that is something we have chosen to do because it feels like the right thing to do”

Expert Advice Where possible the gemstones he uses are ethically sourced, and, at their recent Open Workshop Weekend, Rachel Pullen, a

qualified gemmologist, was sharing her expertise about newly acquired Fair trade sapphires and rubies, as well as showing customers

Jon’s new ethical designs. In addition, visitors were able to see behind the scenes and ask advice from Jon and the goldsmiths.

Guest Designers Alongside his own work, jewellery by other selected designer makers was also on show. Jon has featured guest designers for many years, who, like Jon, work on a very small scale, providing an alternative to massproduced styles. Surprisingly, prices start from only £90, and, if you would like to see more, images are now included on the Jon Dibben website

Dr Ariel Haus has been using Carboxytherapy at his Brazilian clinic for 10 years and is delighted to announce its arrival at his Harley Street Clinic in London. His most sought after treatment request has been for the treatment of dark under-eye circles also known as ‘bags’ under the eyes and Dr Haus sees this as the ideal treatment for an overworked city like London where looking good counts. A very minimally-invasive treatment which is safe and fast and can be done in around 5 minutes, the treatment of dark undereye circles will showcase a profound improvement in the skin texture and contour as the majority of dark under-eye circles are caused by poor circulation beneath the lower eyelids. Rejuvenating this area with Carboxytherapy is an excellent way to bid farewell to those undesired dark circles/bags. Dr Ariel Haus injects a small amount of carbon dioxide gas just beneath the skin of the lower eyelid; this is virtually painless and risk-free. Around 2-4 treatments are needed and in some cases 6 all spaced one week apart. The results following the injections are that circulation increases and dark under-eye circles improve and most look to have completely disappeared. Carboxytherapy dates back to the 1930s and by using this additional carbon dioxide the body recovers from poor blood flow and in turn the body reacts by increasing the oxygen flow to the target area (in this case under-eye circles). Furthermore Carboxytherapy increases collagen formation in the skin by giving it a more youthful appearance.

A FRESH APPROACH TO TREATING CHRONIC BACK PAIN AND OTHER INJURIES...

For the last four years I had been suffering with neck and shoulder pain. Apart from taking medication constantly, there seemed little I could do to help. Openhealth Clinic prescribed a treatment plan and I am not only now symptom free but off the pills JANE W – SUNNINGDALE

Openhealth Clinic is a modern multi-disciplined clinic offering both Physiotherapy and Osteopathy, with the benefit of an on-site Rehabilitation Studio featuring Technogym’s Kinesis equipment. Their small team of eleven practitioners claim their approach is different from most. Graeme Rider, the Clinic’s Director, explained “I have been a practising Osteopath in this area for some fourteen years, and despite my best efforts some patients would come back complaining ‘my backs gone again!’ or ‘it’s the shoulder, same as before’. I had to consider whether something had been missed in the diagnosis and 6 6 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 1

subsequent treatment. Or, had the patient been unable to strengthen the region by not carrying out his or her prescribed rehab exercises properly”. It was this dilemma that led Graeme to look for a different and more holistic and complete approach. A DIFFERENT APPROACH Openhealth patient’s are not necessarily assigned to just one particular practitioner. As Graeme acknowledges “I don’t believe just one discipline can hold all the answers, whether it is Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Sports Massage or Rehabilitation. The trick is to use the right discipline at the right time. We approach your injury in a highly individual and dynamic way.” During your initial consultation

with the clinic’s Osteopaths or Physiotherapists, a diagnosis and treatment plan will be established that might involve you being referred on to, for example, their Acupuncturist or Clinical Pilates Instructor, rather

of re-occurrence. It’s a shame that the average person believes Rehabilitation is probably just for elite athletes, its simply not the case. Our Technogym Kinesis Circuit provides the ultimate in rehab. It allows us to re-create any physical movement safely, from the complexities of the golf swing to the simplicity of loading and unloading the dishwasher”. JANE W’S TREATMENT PLAN

than simply having a short series of purely Osteopathic or Physiotherapy treatments. Graeme and his team are confident it is the attention to detail that is key, “We feel this approach maximises improvements whilst at the same time reducing the likelihood

intermittent numbness to her right hand. She’d had an MRI scan which showed little of note apart from minor wear and tear. Jane had been involved in a car crash five years previously. She had received no treatment at the time and we felt the resulting compensatory postural changes had led to her presenting pain and symptoms. We targeted improving her neck mobility, strengthening her upper back and opening her rounded shoulders. We decided to approach her case using a combination of Cranial Osteopathy, Acupuncture and Rehabilitation Exercise. Having got Jane out of pain, she now relies on a regular monthly Sports Massage treatment to help maintain the changes we made to her upper torso and neck.” QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED PRACTITIONERS Like any business, getting together a good team

was going to be key to the Clinic. Openhealth’s small team of practitioners have collectively amassed seventy five years of clinical experience and treated a wide variety of International sports teams and individuals,

Both the Osteopaths and Physiotherapists are registered with all the private medical insurance companies including Bupa and AXA PPP, so you will be able to get reimbursement for their treatments. “Unfortunately this crossreferring concept is not the norm in musculo-skeletal medicine. SWIM AT HOME EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR AN ORIGIN POOL. IT'S A FAMILY THING...

O

rigin has been in the business of constructing indoor and outdoor swimming pools for over thirty years. In that time they have progressed from simple timber buildings to the impressive architect design schemes of today. To celebrate this anniversary Origin has commissioned a total redesign of their visual identity. This includes a bright new logo, excitingly updated publicity material and van fleet, and an interactive user-friendly website. To accompany this flurry of activity the company has produced an all new colour brochure, showing as never before the breadth of Origin's capability. Covering all the styles that this unique British company has become known for, from classic original styles to custom designed extensions that are a true product of yours and Origin's combined thinking, the brochure is economical with words, letting the beautiful pictures tell the story. Origin has also committed to an occasional newsletter, NewsWave, to announce the latest and greatest improvements the company has been working 7 0 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 1 ?

on, and of course show the pick of the recent triumphs. Add a monthly emailing, Origin eNews, and the new publicity thrust is complete ready to take on the next thirty years! But the caring attention to detail, the meticulous, design work and the insistence of only using the finest materials available hasn't changed. The company still handles every element of the process, without bringing in any outside experts whatsoever. From the first meeting, to the sketch ideas produced as a result, to the architectural drawings and finished visuals, to the guidance through the planning process, to the earthworks, the building and completing. Origin takes the process from beginning to end -

and all you have to do is jump into the state-of-the-art heated pool at the end of it all. Origin has become Britain's longest established, best known pool company because they have accepted every challenge, crossed every hurdle, and with great experience and ingenuity created a product that is considered second to none, by customers and the pool industry alike. The architects and designers are seasoned players in their fields, and bring a wealth of experience to every aspect of this complex and demanding business. Even the teams who build the final pool houses are eminently professional, many having been involved since the very early days of the company. Building an indoor pool house is a complex business, so many of Origin's buildings are based on the company's established styles. For example,

The Panorama has a light, airy construction with a bright hipped glazed lantern roof – and is built from solid timber with an optional brick or rendered facing, to co-ordinate with the style of your home. The Barn has all the appearance and appeal of a country barn conversion, but built to state-of-the-art standards to be the home for a superb heated pool. The Sirius has exceptional designer looks and a wide expanse of glass bringing a real indoor/outdoor feel to your swimming. These established style-inspired pool houses come in a wide range of standard sizes, and the heated pool will be in a style of your choice. Origin is recognised as the foremost designers of one-o buildings and extensions, designed and developed to co-ordinate with their surroundings perfectly. Materials and finishes are carefully matched with the existing structure – so the finished result is a handsome extension to the property, hiding a luxurious heated pool. To do full justice to Origin's expertise they include outdoor pools as part of their remit. The company is famous for creating pool houses, but they are all too aware that many people prefer to swim in the sun (or under the stars) and an outdoor pool can be one of the most aspirational features a home can have. The level of skill and understanding of pool technology has helped Origin to become one of the country's foremost outdoor pool providers. Origin's new logo has a strapline "The original indoor & outdoor pool company." Get in touch, and find out just why the original is usually the best. HOW TO ACHIEVE THE SHOWHOME LOOK Over the last 12 months, Alexander James Interiors has undertaken the design of over 80 showhomes and over 100 private commissions; in addition it’s won contracts for renowned hotel groups, including the Marriot and the Hilton. Here, the team explains how the art of dressing a home makes all the difference. Laurence Walker, head of sales and marketing at Alexander James Interiors, says: “Everyone wants their home to look like a showhome, but it can be difficult to strike the right balance between looking ‘too sterile’ and looking like a real home that’s comfortable to live in. “When we dress a showhome for a developer we imagine the lifestyle of the person who might one day live there. But it’s just the same when we’re undertaking private commissions – the home should reflect the lifestyle of its owner and strike the right balance between being welcoming and homely while still imparting that coveted look of luxury. “What makes us stand out from the crowd is that no two homes ever look the same; our design teams work in small groups that make it easier to ensure that each home is distinctive and eye catching. Clients can visit our outlet shop in Bracknell and our showroom in Marlow to see for themselves the extensive ranges of furnishings and fabrics we use - from the very traditional to the very contemporary.” Call us to arrange a viewing of our latest showhomes in The Wentworth Estate and Sunninghill which we’ve designed for our clients Millgate Homes and Osborne Developments.

arlier this year the Government announced their first comprehensive review of the Feed-in tariffs for small-scale renewable electricity generation. On the 31st October 2011 they released their second comprehensive review which is considering various aspects of the scheme which include the tariff rates. Solar PV is still a great investment at the new rate of 21p per kWh. It will give you an average return of 8% to 10% which is still more than any ISA or building society would offer you today. There have been extensive price reductions in the last 6 months for a solar PV system which enables you to receive great returns on investment. From the 1st April 2012 any individual wanting to install a solar PV system will also require an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) to which they must

ADD CHARM AND ATMOSPHERE WITH A WOOD BURNING STOVE One way of heating your home more economically and efficiently and at the same time adding charm and atmosphere to your home is by installing a wood burning or multi fuel stove. Charles Cavaliero, owner of Surrey Woodburners, which opened its new show room in St Johns Woking in September said: “I have had customers who have not turned on their gas central heating all winter. How much you save depends on your lifestyle; the longer you have your stove on the cheaper it will be. If you only use it at a weekend, your saving will not be huge but if you work from home or are retired and are using it all day, it will be a really significant amount.” Wood burning stoves are associated with traditional style homes but 8 4 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 1

now they are often a choice of people who prefer contemporary interiors. Available in a wide variety of finishes including stainless steel, modern stoves with their simple lines and their flues soaring skywards make a dramatic design statement in a minimalist setting. “About 80% of heat from a conventional open fire is lost up the chimney” says Charles, who has worked with wood burning stoves in Surrey for several years. “Having a wood burning stove doesn’t mean you need to get rid of your favourite traditional fireplace either. Instead the fireplace can be converted with an insert stove retaining the original attractive features”. Wood burning stoves are ideal for

home owners who have an existing chimney with an open fire or gas fire but who are finding they are still cold or who are tired or having the central heating up full at the same time. Wood burnings stoves burn three times as much as an open log fires so there is little residue and maintenance is easy. All that’s necessary is to sweep the chimney periodically and clean the glass.

This means that the roots would have carried on growing whilst the rest of the plant is in dormancy, ensuring a better established plant by the Take for instance horticulture, spring. This would definitely when I was setting out in this have paid rewards this year as trade some 40+ years ago we the temperatures were above were always advised that Autumn average in February, resulting was the best time of year to carry in an early spring. It is this out planting works, unless the same phenomenon that heating items to be planted were tender engineers use for ground source tropical types. The reason for this heat pumps, although this is at was that we were taught that even lower depths for higher once plants went into the ground temperatures. The reason why they start to produce new roots the soil remains significantly and develop a new root system. warmer in winter than the air temperature is due to its Root growth will continue until insulation properties. the soil temperature consistently With the growth in garden falls below 5’C, which in most years, in the south of the country, centres and container production of plants, in the happens for only a very short 1980’s, the emphasis on planting period, if at all. Many people changed to the spring. The will be surprised to learn that reason this occurred was not last year, during December, for the benefit of plants, but when we were suffering snow as often the case a marketing and air temperatures of -10’C, ploy, garden centres promoting a lot of soils would have barely planting at a time when dipped below 5’C in the root customers showed the greatest zone, which for large shrubs

interest in their gardens. Views have changed so much in recent times that we are now asked on a regular basis whether it is alright to plant in the autumn, or we are even told that customers will leave it until the spring to plant as it is better for the plants. Unfortunately this is a common misperception. Container production has made it possible for plants to be sold and planted successfully throughout the year. However for most plants I would continue to strongly recommend planting in the autumn, particularly for larger plants, if you have the option, as they still benefit from that winter root growth and establishment. Spring and summer planting is fine if you miss the opportunity to plant in the autumn, but you will need to keep a closer eye on watering in particular, as the root system will not be as established in the garden! With summer planting you are more likely to come across leaf scorch when the weather warms

up very quickly, not necessarily due to not watering the plant but merely that the small root system is unable to take up the water supplied quickly enough. This type of leaf scorch rarely causes long term harm but can detract from the plant’s interest until new growth is put on. Dealing with plants is similar to many aspects of life, preparation is the key. If at all possible if planting can be carried out in the autumn it is recommended, however if circumstances mean this isn’t possible planting later can be highly successful it just requires more careful preparation and execution. Wrap up warm and plant now could give you more time to enjoy your garden in the spring! hen people are choosing plants the most common things they ask about is whether the plant is deciduous or evergreen and the shape and season of flowering. Unfortunately the one thing they rarely ask about and therefore miss out on, unless by chance, is scent. There are times, that even when the garden is apparently full of interest, that scent can add that extra sensory dimension. Scented plants particularly come into their own during the winter and spring seasons when flowering is often minimal. Some of the best scented garden plants don’t unfortunately produce the largest or most showy flowers. I admit that during the summer, there are plants that provide both showy flowers and some fantastic scents, such as the musk roses, but often this is not the case. Summer flowering plants benefit from the fact that plant breeders have put a lot more effort into breeding them, combining the best features of the different plants available. In my view the best scented plants are actually winter

8 8 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 1

PLEASURES VIBURNUM

flowering ones. The reason for this is that nature has developed the scent to attract pollinating insects. At this time of year these insects are very few and far between, so plants that want to be pollinated need to attract them over distances much greater than colourful petals on its own would do. Whether plants produce colourful flowers or highly scented ones, this uses a lot of energy, at a time when the winter sun is weak and therefore the plant is producing very little. A lot of winter flowers have developed very small flowers, but very scented ones as they have evolved to put all their energy into producing as much scent as possible to allow it to be carried in the wind as far as possible. It is true to say that encountering a nice scent when you venture outside during the winter naturally has more effect. Your senses are less distracted by visual stimuli and this allows the brain to register scents more acutely. Winter also tends to benefit scent as the air tends to be heavy keeping the scent low to the ground at head level and cooler temperatures dissipate the scent slower.

FOTHERGILLA MONTICOLA

The range of winter scented flowering plants is vast however I will stick to my choice of shrubs which most people would be able to find room somewhere in their garden for. One of my favourite scented flowering shrubs is the ‘Witch Hazel’ or Hamamelis, it comes in a number of varieties with different flower colour but they all have little spidery flowers, that they produce Dec/Feb, which are sweetly scented in common. Stood out on their own the flowers do show up on the bare stems, but are less significant in mixed borders however on a warm day the scent is unmissable a nice change from the usual damp smell of a cold winters day. The only other time this plant excels is when it produces its autumn foliage in hues of red, orange and yellow. Other similar shrubs are the ‘Winter Hazel’ or Corylopsis pauciflora, which produces cowslip scented primrose yellow flowers and ‘Winter Sweet’ or Chimonanthus praecox which has small yellow scented flowers. ‘Oleaster’ or Elaeagnus x ebbingei

HAMAMELIS YELLOW

MAHONIA

is another favourite. This shrub has the advantage of being a silvery green evergreen shrub that can be used as screening or as a backdrop to borders. Related plants are available in different leaf colours. Its flowers are very difficult to see in amongst the foliage, they are a creamy white and a similar shape and size to a clove, but produce a scent that would make most people stop in their tracks to work out where it was coming from. My last recommendation, as I am running out of room and time, are the Daphnes. These come in both evergreen and deciduous varieties. The evergreen Daphne odora aureo marginata has a narrow yellow leaf margin but is grown primarily for it’s reddish purple scented flowers. This is definitely not a plant to be hidden away. To get advice regarding these and other scented plants take some time out and visit your specialist plant nursery where I am sure help will be on hand. WEEKEND BREAKS

stoke place

S

et within glorious Capability Brown designed grounds, Stoke Place was built as a family residence in 1690 by Patrick Lamb. East and west wings were added over time and the property retains the warmth of a family home with an emphasis on service, glamour and comfort. A Queen Anne, 17th Century manor house, Stoke Place was the first in the family of Dhillon Group transformations. Reworkings of historical country properties into fashionable urban retreats soon followed with two now critically acclaimed nearby retreats. The Olde Bell and The Crown are historical modern coaching inns re-imagined by Isle Crawford, loved by metropolitan guests and locals alike and regularly patronised by an A-list clientele. Recent patrons have included Hollywood legend Dustin Hoffman, Rachel Weisz and Judi Dench. Heston Blumenthal dines regularly at The Olde Bell and off-duty rock stars are frequently spotted taking some much needed R&R and country air during weekends alongside a fashionable crowd that includes fashion designer Erdem, Sarah Shotton (creative director of Agent Provocateur) and fashion’s fierce troubadour Grace Woodward. Stoke Place’s décor was re-worked to provide luxurious adult comforts for stylish getaways. When planning the re-design of Stoke Place, the design manifesto hinged on creating comfortable, informal splendour with quirky but stylish reworks of the traditional country house. The group’s overriding objective was to create a rural outpost that was luxurious yet affordable, stylish but groovy. Guests approaching Stoke Place from the sweeping gravel driveway would be forgiven for mistaking it as a fussy, traditional English country hotel. It is anything but. Inside it’s an eclectic mix of old and

new, elegant Victorian rooms have been given a 21st century makeover with contemporary furnishings, colour and detail. Hip design touches and rural glamour abound at Stoke Place, cutting through any daunting aristocratic grandness. The hotel boasts a unique and colourful labyrinth of rooms and lounge spaces. Stylish afternoon teas, cocktail hour drinks, inventive menus for stylish celebrations and indulgent pampering sessions in the beauty room are available to guests and locals. Stoke Place also hold quarterly decadent house parties organised by methodical dreamer and the doyenne of the UK party circuit, Polly Betton. These now legendary soirees took their inspiration from shindigs thrown by the Bright Young Things of the roaring twenties. White Blackbird parties at Stoke Place are creative, immersive themed events that fuse nightlife with performance and theatre, where Stoke Place becomes a magical world to be explored. Guests arrive in suitably themed dress and seek out secret, hidden entertainment in the hotel’s glamorous suites. The main ballroom and common spaces feature dance, music, installation art and a midnight feast. Previous events have included Tweed, and Pyjama Party, where a mass staged pillow fight between revelers saw the Ballroom transformed into a cloud of feathers. For the Halloween bash, Black Widow’s Ball on the 28th October, the house will be transformed into a Hammer House experience where guests journey through an underworld of unseemly pleasures. The next party, Bal en Blanc will take place on 2nd December and will see Stoke Place candlelit and styled as an 18th century French court. Guests can expect performances inside a lifesize snow globe, a midnight patisserie feast inspired by Marie

WEEKEND BREAKS

Antoinette and secret, hidden entertainment to be discovered by guests, dressed in Regency finery. A dressing up box and a team of make up artists will be on hand to create suitable period looks. Even without the glamorous experiential parties, this country house experience comes with unexpected twists. Guests enter through the reception area and the classical country house picture deconstructs. Traditional rules are bent, the classic English country manor reinvented. The staircase is painted duck egg blue. A single wall is decorated with picture-less frames within frames, a witty reference to Stoke Place’s history as a former family home. Only 30 minutes from London, the hotel whispers style without ostentation, luxury without fuss. Furnishing includes bookcases in alcoves, overstuffed sofas and comfortable easy chairs. The Garden Room, their fittingly current restaurant is no exception to Stoke Place’s eclectic rule. The garden has been brought into the lightfilled dining space in a vibrant, botanical palette of white and greens. Large eye level windows overlook 26 acres of Capability Brown designed gardens, ornamental lake and parklands. Statement leaf print wallpaper line the walls, complementing textures and patterns; natural wooden floorboards and white lacquered tables furnished with garden leaves and ferns complete the overall look. The botanical-inspired interior is matched by the inventive culinary direction of head chef, Craig van der Meer. Craig came to Stoke Place from South Africa, via Langshott Manor; his food is modern British, inventive and seasonal. Service is relaxed, friendly and pitched at putting guests at ease. Craig’s take on the traditional country house menu is served with an artful twist. Seasonal and locally sourced ingredients are used to create interesting versions of traditional fare. Following its excellent rating of four by The Good Food

Guide for a second year running, Stoke Place has been assigned a rating of four stars and has been awarded two rosettes for fine dining by the AA Guide. The two rosettes are an indication that Stoke Place has achieved ‘greater precision’ in its cooking and obvious attention to the quality and selection of ingredients and future accolades seem likely. The Garden Room has also been recommended for an additional third rosette. Taking inspiration from radical innovations employed by Ferran Adria and Heston Blumenthal, Criag reworks classic dishes and combine immaculately cooked seasonal ingredients skillfully arranged into dainty mouthfuls, trickles, sprigs, foams and cubes. Well-known dishes are modified or embellished with surprise elements, foams or emulsions. Craig’s cooking is far from simple, although never overdone or confusing. Lobster tortellini is combined with baby fennel, Pernod jelly and bisque foam. Meanwhile, classic British fillet of beef is served with tongue, cheek, swede and borderlaise sauce and the classic British cheese board is reworked into a Reblochon ice cream, Perl Lâs, complete with sweet figs, red onion marmalade and manchego crisp. Stoke Place joined only a handful of new entries to debut at this level, which in turn reflected a ‘dedicated, focused approach to cooking, good classical skills and high quality ingredients.’ Aimed at cosmopolitan guests and food enthusiasts, Stoke Place takes the traditionally stiff country house experience and instills it with metropolitan cool. Glamorous and groovy, this 17th Century Queen Anne house is a winning combination of hip and heritage, mixing classic settings with flamboyant modern design. Relaxed, urban with plenty of adult comforts, Stoke Place is cool local hangout or a designer break without the cynical pricing. Stoke Place, Stoke Green, Stoke Poges, Bucks, SL2 4HT

Hip design touches and rural glamour abound at stoke Place.
