The exhibition will be UK’s most comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the ultimate accessory. From designer handbags to
despatch boxes, vanity cases to military rucksacks, it will explore our long standing fascination with the bag. Actress and singer Jane Birkin and the former executive chairman of Hermès Jean-Louis Dumas met on a flight from Paris to London. Jane complained that she could not find a bag suitable to carry her belongings and to fit her needs as a young mother. Dumas sketched on an aeroplane sickness-bag a supple rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching. The DECEMBER 2020 13

bag named after Jane, became a sensation appealing to women looking for something spacious and fashionable. The ‘Birkin’ has since become an undeniable symbol of wealth and luxury. The Mulberry Bayswater is one of the brand’s most iconic handbags, as popular today as it was when it launched in 2003. Designed by Nicholas Knightly, the Bayswater unites the best of Mulberry’s craft skills and heritage influences. Supermodel Kate Moss was one of the first celebrity fans and has carried many different styles and colours over the years - including the example that will feature in the exhibition. The Alexa, launched in 2010, was inspired by British style icon Alexa Chung who was often photographed carrying a Mulberry Elkington satchel. This caught the eye of Mulberry and Chung’s chic style influenced the shape and leather choices for this new bag. Bags that will also feature include a large embroidered burse used to protect the silver matrix of Elizabeth I’s Great Seal of England, a gas mask bag owned by HRH Queen Mary during World War II, Winston Churchill’s red despatch box and the Fendi ‘Baguette’ bag worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in one of Sex and the City’s most famous scenes.

THE CONNAUGHT UNVEILS THE CONNAUGHT PATISSERIE ON MOUNT STREET, MAYFAIR 16 DECEMBER 2020
THE DETAILS The Connaught Patisserie is open seven days a week - 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Cake orders can be made by calling 020 7314 3535. Delivery is available in W1. the-connaught.co.uk
N
estled at the side of the hotel, with its own entrance on majestic Mount Street complete with grand columns and pink flag flying proudly, this space sees exquisite Connaught patisserie – one of the hotel’s famous signatures – showcased and available for all to indulge. Each day, delicious pastries and patisserie are sold or served to customers in the intimate rose-hued surroundings of the shop, alongside expertly made coffee, artisan tea and, of course, champagne. Those in Mayfair can also call upon The Connaught for hand delivered patisserie and celebratory cakes beautifully boxed and ribboned. The Connaught’s Executive Pastry Chef Nicolas Rouzaud and his team have created pastries and cakes to carry you through the day – a large sculptural clock hangs in the patisserie, not to tell the time, but to show customers what they can expect and when, from an early morning pain au chocolat, to delicate afternoon patisserie, and cakes to pick up on the way home for a special post-supper treat. Loaf cakes and ‘gâteaux de voyage’ – cakes historically designed to last throughout long pilgrimages – sit on the counter, from lemon madeleines to walnut financiers and chouquettes, alongside a special exclusive from The River Café, a long-time friend of The Connaught. Their Chocolate Nemesis are hand delivered daily to The Connaught Patisserie – the first time the cake has been available outside of its home. The counter is also home to an array of 10 seasonal patisserie – the true showstoppers in the shop. Included are classics such as Paris-Brest, Apple Tatin and St Honoré, and others showcasing more contemporary ingredients such as the vibrant Yuzu Éclair, the Mango and Passion Fruit Mousse cake, and the Chocolate Tonka Tart. The Connaught Patisserie also creates bespoke large and decadent cakes to order designed for birthdays, celebrations or simply to tell someone you love them. These exquisite creations can be collected from the Patisserie, or, if customers are in Mayfair, the team can arrive at your door laden with cake boxes, looking splendid, in true Connaught fashion. ART
A LITTLE MORE SPARKLE,
A LITTLE LESS STRESS. THIS CHRISTMAS, WE WISH YOU ALL THE VERY BEST.
S
ay good riddance to 2020 in style, with the best gifts under the tree. The year has been far from what we had all hoped, but what we have learned this year is how to care for those around us a little more. Taking the time to help those in need on our doorstep. With Christmas looming where we are all unsure if we will be able to see our loved ones its time to give ourselves some TLC. To surprise those, we love with a gift, which is going to be meaningful, heartfelt and last a lifetime. Art does not have to be the most sacred luxury, it can ignite a fond memory, an inside joke or a loving message. Art and artists intentions are to inspire, escape, be discussed or to have a message uncovered. It is one of the most special and unique ways to show you care, when you gift others with art. This year here at Gallery 1066, we are working closely with all our clients, over the phone, facetime within the Gallery and emails. To ensure that even though we have

The team in Ironbridge is very proud to collaborate with Mulberry once again. We have created two beautiful teddy bears that are not only entirely British-made, right down the traditionally-woven scarf, but which we hope will bring joy to their customers for many years to come. “ Merrythought teddy bears are world-renowned and sold as far afield as Australia and Japan, but are proudly made in Britain in the same factory the company started 90 years ago. Truffle Guys is a luxury condiments brand specialising in selling products with the highest quality of truffle within them. With a monthly subscription package also available, Truffle Guys cater for those who may be new to the truffle world with helpful recipes customers can use to make mind-blowing meals. Consisting of Jordan, a seasoned traveller and marketing expert,
“With a monthly subscription package also available, Truffle Guys cater for those who may be new to the truffle world”
and Rikki, one of the UK’s most recognised suppliers of products to the hospitality sector, the two young entrepreneurs saw there were hundreds of truffle products on the market - but most were weak-tasting or too expensive for the customer. Things needed to change, so during a trip to London in early 2018, the pair decided enough was enough and that the world needed a consumerfriendly brand that people can recognise and trust. By bringing a product deemed as a luxury item into the homes of everyday foodies, Truffle Guys’ products can be used at home in a variety of exciting ways, mixing traditional truffle uses with some more adventurous recipes.

Choose British Craftsmanship this Christmas
SIR GORDON BENNETT
C
hoose well and make it last. Something your Grandmother might have uttered. Well, there certainly is a movement to more traditional values when it comes to buying behaviours of late. And one company that is leading the way is Sir Gordon Bennett. Since 2018 they have been purveying great British goods and gifts. But not kiss me quick hats or Union Jack emblazoned fridge magnets. Far from it, they curate a beautiful collection of British brands that, in their words ‘Look beautiful, are made well, work as intended and made in Britain by skilled craftsmen and women’. There has never been a more pertinent time to be thinking a bit more about the products you buy and that goes double during Christmas. The amount of unwanted Christmas gifts is a terrible waste of the planet’s finite resources. Giving a gift that is actually appreciated and that won’t be chucked into the back of the cupboard, will make both you and the recipient feel good. Buying local is another great reason to think wisely about the gifts we give this year. Supporting local helps smaller British brands that in turn creates jobs, which in turn puts money back into the community.
44 DECEMBER 2020
The skills and techniques that go into the products are paramount and Sir Gordon Bennett believe in keeping those skills alive. From their hands to yours is one of mantras they live by. Whether a brand is 200 years old holding a Royal Warrant or 2 years old with a right royal future there is bound to be something for your loved ones. We all need to be more conscious consumers. With Brexit on the horizon, buying British craftsmanship gifts will not only help support the British economy but also stop the reliance on cheap, badly made products that are simply not good for the environment. And if those gifts look beautiful too, then that is an added bonus this Christmas. Browse the curated collection and shop online at sirgordonbennett.com Instagram: SirGordonBennett

THIS SEASON’S HOTTEST MANI TREND WHY SETTLE FOR ONE NAIL POLISH SHADE WHEN YOU CAN HAVE FIVE? KATIE WRIGHT FINDS OUT MORE. everywhere. When you think about it, it’s not surprising that multicoloured manicures have become the biggest nail trend of 2020. If ever there was a year that needed brightening up – in whatever way possible – it’s this one, and painting your nails with a range of pretty polishes is a quick way to lift your mood on dreary days. It’s also the sort of trend you want to show off on Instagram, and the influx of #rainbownails posts happened to coincide with the reopening of many nail salons, resulting in lots of requests for multi-hued manis. So, how do you get the rainbow nails look at home? First of all, it’s important to note that in spite of the name, this trend actually veers away from the traditional seven colours of the rainbow. ORLY PASSION FRUIT NAIL POLISH, £8.95, AVAILABLE FROM Instead, it’s about choosing a spectrum of five NAILPOLISHDIRECT shades that go beautifully together, whether that’s pastels, neons or rich jewel tones. Alternatively, you might want to create a kind of ombre effect, by choosing one colour – say pink – and painting each nail a different shade, from pastel to fuchsia. If you’re feeling really creative, you could take a white nail polish and mix up your own shades, from light to dark, by varying the amount of white you add. Another way to try the trend – as seen on Kylie Jenner – is to do a colourful twist on the French manicure, by painting just the tips of your nails with bright shades, and leaving the rest nude.

FESTIVE SEASON BEAUTY TRENDS Katie Wright reveals the key looks of the season ahead.
W
inter is here, and that means it’s all change in the fashion and beauty departments, as we wave goodbye to Autumn and say hello to the newseason collections. The AW20 catwalks brought us a bounty of fabulous hair and make-up looks, and there’s something to suit everyone – from sparkle and shimmer to moody hues, and the re-emergence of some classic techniques. Here are the most important beauty trends of the season…
Golden eyes
Looking forward to festive season? We’ve got the perfect party look for you: golden eyes, as seen at Tom Ford, where shimmering shadow was paired with kohl liner, and Gabriela Hearst, where a warm golden tone was topped with a sprinkle of glitter.
Metallic shine
Another look that’s destined for the dance floor, mirror-like flashes were a favourite at London Fashion Week, with models at Preen, Simone Rocha and Erdem all adorned with metallic foils. In shades 60 DECEMBER 2020
of silver, gold and red, the chocolate wrapper-like textures were placed in an abstract manner, giving an antique, worn-in vibe.
Winged eyeliner
Mastered the feline flick? Then it’s time to take it up a notch with one of the edgy black winged liner looks seen on the catwalks, from the cut crease flick at Stella McCartney, to the bold double-wing designs at Valentino and Miu Miu. Alternatively, the crisp mini-wing at Richard Quinn is a good starting point for newbies.
Gothic vibes
Pale skin, black cherry lips, kohl-rimmed eyes, or all of the above – that was the brief at a whole host of AW20 shows, from Rodarte and Anna Sui in New York, to Gucci and Max Mara in Milan. While going full-on goth with that make-up trio might seem a bit much, a deep berry lip is a softer way to try the trend.
Pops of colour
The brightest make-up hues are usually reserved for spring, but there were some welcome splashes of colour on the autumn catwalks. Pink was particularly popular, with bubblegum pink eyes at Matty Bovan, fuchsia mascara at Off-White, and Eighties-style eyeshadow at Rixo.
Red lips
A perfectly painted scarlet lip never goes out of style, of course, but this season, matte red makes way for something with a bit more shine. We’re not going so far as to say gloss is back – aim for a soft satin finish, as seen at Jason Wu, Marc Jacobs and Jil Sander.
Statement hair
Hair stylists went all out for AW20, creating some spectacular catwalk looks, from huge, wide wigs at Matty Bovan and sculpted braids at Ashish, to colourful stencilled locks at Emilio Pucci and slicked-back silver tresses at Erdem. Obviously, these aren’t the kind of styles you can easily replicate at home, but the chic twisted knots and braids seen at Fendi and Rixo are a lot more wearable, while still offering plenty of wow-factor.

Tanya Mulesa had a dream lifestyle: a wonderful family, job and house, and a diary filled with travel. The archetypal modern woman on the go, she balanced her work, social life, business trips, and her boys at home – all while maintaining her sense of style. All was going smoothly until she and her family moved house. Our heroine found herself with two enormous boxes filled with upwards of 60 pairs of shoes, taking up more space than the rest of her wardrobe combined. Sounds like a typical suitcase, right? A sustainability junkie, Tanya felt hypocritical about the amount of footwear she had amassed over the years. She no longer even wore the majority of her shoes, which were uncomfortable, out of fashion or needed repairing. None of their brands could claim sustainability credentials, either. It was a wakeup call to declutter. That week, Tanya went on a two-day business trip filled with formal, evening, and casual events. The packing puzzle she had to solve was beyond exhausting. She would have to stuff her shoes, clothes, make-up, and work documents into her carry-on luggage. To save space, Tanya bought a new pair of formal flats to wear throughout the trip. They seemed fine at first, but soon revealed themselves to be too dull for her more glamorous engagements. Worse still, they blistered Tanya’s feet. The trip reached its low point when a plaster fell off her foot and out of her shoe, right in front of her client. Not her proudest moment. Back at home, Tanya’s shoe drama was getting worse. So few of her countless shoes were comfortable or suited her lifestyle. If only she had one pair that didn’t blister, that she could customise for different outfits and occasions, and were sustainable… After struggling to find anything resembling this, Tanya realised the world was missing something. And so, the idea for Cleverstein was seeded. Tanya offers the following advice to all women: • Ask yourself: what frustrates you most on a daily basis? • Is there a practical solution to it on the market? • If the answer is NO, Google “How to invent a product.” • Feel free to reach out to Tanya at tanya@cleverstein.com and ask how she did it. She’s always happy to offer guidance – one woman to another. Also, don’t forget to check out the game-changing Cleversteins. cleverstein.co.uk DECEMBER 2020 65

KIRSTY GALLACHER: ‘LOCKDOWN HAS TAUGHT ME HOW TO BE HAPPY ON MY OWN’ THE TV PRESENTER, WHO CAUGHT CORONAVIRUS EARLIER THIS YEAR, TELLS KATIE WRIGHT HOW 2020 HAS HELPED HER GROW.
R
eflecting on the last few months, Kirsty Gallacher is remarkably upbeat for someone who caught coronavirus and had to put a number of work projects on hold, saying she feels “very, very lucky” to have spent lockdown in the “dream house” she bought at the end of last year. “It was almost fate, looking back, because [the house] nearly fell through last summer,” she says of the barn conversion in the Berkshire countryside. “We were in heaven, really, compared to a lot of people who were stuck in cities.” The TV presenter was joined some of the time by sons Oscar and Jude, who split their time between Gallacher and her ex-husband, former rugby player Paul Sampson. The couple split in 2015.
74 DECEMBER 2020
Suffering with Covid at the end of March wasn’t heaven, Gallacher admits, but says she only had the virus “moderately”. “I wasn’t hospitalised, but I did speak to a GP on the phone. I had all of the things – sickness; sorry to say it but diarrhoea; I had the cough.” Unfortunately, Gallacher’s parents caught the virus off her (when she wasn’t showing symptoms) but all made a full recovery and now, the 44-year-old is looking on the bright side: “I was tested and was very strongly Covid positive and antibody positive.” But there is a positive to come out of this challenging period. The mum-of-two says that being forced to spend more time alone this year has helped her learn how to be happy on her own – something she struggled with in the past.
“It’s an amazing treatment that uses ultrasound energy to give your skin’s collagen production a boost. “Your collagen starts working for itself within your skin – rejuvenating your skin, sculpting, lifting – all the things that collagen does for us.”
Gallacher says that before she was approached by Ultherapy, she was considering other anti-ageing treatments but “wasn’t ready for needles” and says she finds it worrying that so many young people are having fillers. “I get really upset when I see 16, 17, 18-year-old girls or boys THE DETAILS plumping their lips up. “I would discourage anyone “Touch wood, I’ve possibly cracked that – which was a Kirsty Gallacher is the UK and Ireland that young from having an real problem for me and caused me major distress when I got brand ambassador for non-surgical invasive treatment, because you divorced. lifting and tightening treatment just don’t know what you’re “It was one of the biggest causes of my terrible couple of Ultherapy. Possessing a rich heritage of more than 60 years, Mumford & Wood has been delighting commercial and residential customers with its product range throughout its history. Ten years ago, Mumford & Wood were specified for new windows to an extension added to an impressive 1854 Victorian townhouse in London. The home is owned by the Baker family who comment “we were originally attracted to the house because of the amount of natural light that fills the rooms”. “Mumford & Wood were specified along with a building firm by the architect originally. Being
introduced to Mumford & Wood was the best thing to come from that architect as we were disappointed with the builder’s work” Mr Baker comments. In the present day, the family decided to update the rest of the house, undertaking a significant refurbishment project, including replacing the windows throughout, and there was only one manufacturer in the running. “There was no hesitation from us in returning to Mumford & Wood. The windows replaced 10 years ago continue to function perfectly and they look excellent. We knew that the rest of the house needed windows of this quality as well” Mr Baker explains. hen we are thinking of the most important factor in choosing furniture, storage has got importance. Wardrobes have an upper hand when it comes to storage options. Wooden wardrobes have always been the favourites of people for decades. We can’t see a household without wooden furniture as most people like the comfort it provides. Solid wood wardrobes are the most popular among homeowners around the world because of their classic style, functionality and longevity. They are versatile in style and functions. Here we are discussing how to choose the best wooden wardrobe for your home.
What are the advantages of wooden wardrobes?
Wood is one of the sturdiest materials one can have for their wardrobes. Despite its strength, the wooden wardrobes are sold at an affordable price. Along with wooden wardrobes are strong enough as they can be used for many years. If you care for your furniture then you will be able to enjoy your wooden wardrobes for a long time. Look and feel: Wooden furniture can also go a long way to creating a sense of the natural world indoors. If you live in a highdensity apartment block in a city, you may wish to foster a sense of nature in your living space. Wood is the perfect way to achieve this, through both its wide-ranging colour spectrum and the fascinating patterns of grains and fibres. Wood can also immediately bring warmth to otherwise sterile surroundings. Easy Maintenance: Although completely weather-resistant, wooden wardrobes are quite easy to maintain. They can be gently wiped with a soft wet cloth to remove dust and dirt from the surfaces and abyss of the
wardrobe. Also, to want the long-life of these beautiful furniture units, keep it away from the direct sunlight in the bedroom because they might degrade the finish of these pieces. Versatility: When compared to other materials wood is certainly versatile. No matter whether the design is modern or contemporary wood could certainly create an impact on that. They could be easily customised and derived just according to your bespoke needs Eco Friendly: Wood is the best example of an eco-friendly wardrobe. They are 100% safe and do not have any harmful effects at all. Strength and Durability: Wood is, of course, abiding and robust material and is the perfect choice for anyone looking for longevity from their wardrobe. Whether you opt for hardwood (oak, teak) or softwood (pine, maple, walnut), there is inherent stability and reliability to a well-made wooden wardrobe for clothes. Inspired Elements have a premium range of wooden fitted wardrobes that can be customised according to the space you have whether you have a big bedroom or a bedroom which only has space around a corner or space around the windows or a loft-style bedroom. Their wooden fitted wardrobes come with a superior finish, soft to the touch smooth finish, which is also hard-wearing. Every individual has their own interests while thinking of a wardrobe, we have no limitations in creating unique and aesthetic wardrobes. The ease of maintenance makes them popular among customers and that’s why Inspired Elements is known as the best bespoke wooden Fitted wardrobe manufacturers in London. inspiredelements.co.uk

door
The front
can make or break how good your property looks from the outside. People look at a front door before they look at anything else – it reflects what you and others think about the house. A front door must be in keeping with your property - planked doors work well on barn or warehouse conversions. But there is no escaping the universal charm of the Georgian front door - solid, well-constructed, but at the same time curiously domestic and welcoming. The classic Georgian combination of solid, panelled door with a glazed fanlight over the top, is just magic.
The different types of front doors
There are three main types. Firstly you can opt for solid wood. These are built to last, but they do require some upkeep. You’ll need to sand them down and repaint periodically to stop the wood from rotting. And you can change the colour of the door whenever you want. Secondly you can get a uPVC front door. These tend to be a lot cheaper, easy to clean and only need the odd wash and dry to rinse off dirt and dust. And finally you could opt for a composite front door. As the name suggests,
they are made from a variety of different materials. The best material is chosen for each part of the door, providing the best overall performance as a result. Door knobs, knockers and letterboxes should be in keeping with one another and sympathetic to the style of the door. Simple brass ring knockers and “Doctor’s” door knockers are two styles that suit both panelled and plank doors. Lionhead knockers and knobs with ornate embellishment are typical of the Queen Anne period while reeded (ridged) door furniture was used in late Georgian and early Victorian times. Edwardian door furniture is plain, with simple reeding, while Victorian is slightly heavier.
Focusing on security
Security is an important element of any front door. Ideally choose one that offers multipoint locks and have a split spindle design. This means when you close the door from the outside, the only way of getting back in is to use a key. Multipoint locks should have bolts that move into place by an upward turn of the handle from inside or outside your home. You then use a key to keep in place. In some cases compression bolts are provided in the door, to further secure it into the frame. Clearly the more bolts you have the more secure it will be.

Style & Character RUSSELL TAYLOR FROM RUSSELL TAYLOR ARCHITECTS OUTLINES HOW TO PUT THE STYLE AND CHARACTER BACK INTO YOUR HOME.
T
he traditional houses of London are popular because their character seems to embrace everything that one thinks of as home. But their appearance suffers a sort of erosion: windows are replaced, unsympathetic extensions added, cornices get clogged with paint, and so on. The challenge is to create a traditional sense of style without compromising modern family life. Extensions are a good example. There is no reason why an extension has to look as if it belongs to another building. The solution we have adopted on a number of projects is to design the extension as a mini orangery with the windows glazed in slim double-glazed panes. As an orangery type the extension will create a free-flowing transition from house to garden, bringing the spaces together. It brings welcome decoration and lightness that is otherwise absent from the backs of most houses. But how do you make an orangery that is elegant and convincing? It’s all in the details! Traditional details: the mouldings of doors, windows and architraves, plaster ceiling mouldings, etc are usually finer and
94 DECEMBER 2020
more varied than standard, “reproduction” pieces. We design all parts of a house or extension: doors, windows, shutters, architraves, skirtings, cornices, chimneypieces, built-in furniture and cupboards, staircases, etc. Occasionally we have designed light fittings and ironmongery. Where appropriate we use off-the-peg elements, it’s a matter of choosing what is right. The details have to work with the overall design. It’s an attention to detail that we follow throughout all parts of the house, top to bottom, making it work for the family. This approach succeeds when working on Listed properties and in Conservation Areas. Obtaining Listed Building Consent can be a hurdle, but being sympathetic to the original design and enhancing the appearance is the best starting point. We have an unrivalled reputation for obtaining Listed Building Consent is difficult and controversial cases. It’s important to emphasise that building with a traditional attention to detail is no more expensive than making something with a stripped, bare appearance. The traditional houses of London were built in a straight forward way with a logic of construction that is inherently economical. And, such construction is a green, sustainable way of building! The embodied energy in traditional construction is far less than that in many modern materials and components. And because the construction is robust it will last a long time and is easily repaired using readily available, low energy materials. Traditional building is the future, not the past! rtarchitects.co.uk E: mail@rtarchitects.co.uk T: 020 7261 1984

TIMELESS ELEGANCE OF SASH WINDOWS 96 DECEMBER 2020
A
sash window or hung sash window is made of one or more movable panels or “sashes” that form a frame to hold panes of glass, which are often separated from other panes (or “lights”) by narrow muntins. Although any window with this style of glazing is technically “a sash”, the term is used almost exclusively to refer to windows where the glazed panels are opened by sliding vertically, or horizontally in a style known as a “Yorkshire light”, sliding sash, or sash and case (so called because the weights are concealed in a box case). The oldest surviving examples of sash windows were installed in England in the 1670s, for example at Ham House. The invention of the sash window is sometimes credited, without conclusive evidence, to Robert Hooke. The sash window is often found in Georgian and Victorian houses, and the classic arrangement has three panes across by two up on each of two sashes, giving a “six over six” panel window, although this is by no means a fixed rule. Innumerable late Victorian and Edwardian suburban houses were built in England using standard sash window units approximately 4 feet (1.2 m) in width, but older, hand-made units could be of any size. To facilitate operation, the weight of the glazed panel is usually balanced by a heavy steel, lead, or cast iron sash weight or counterweight concealed within the window frame. The sash weight is connected to the window by a sash cord or chain that runs over a pulley at the top of the frame, although spring balances are sometimes used. Sash windows may be fitted with simplex hinges, which allow the window to be locked into hinges on one side while the counterbalance on the other side is detached, allowing the window to be opened for escape or cleaning. The name “hung sash window” is more usual in the United States, and typically refers to a double-hung window with two sashes that can move up and down in the window frame. A single hung window has two sashes but normally the top sash is fixed and only the bottom sash slides. Triple and quadruple hung windows are used for tall openings, common in New England churches. Construction is usually of softwood, and these sashes were traditionally only single-glazed. Modern double-glazed sash windows are now available, which increase energy efficiency and reduce sound ingress whilst keeping the traditional look of a period property. Traditionally styled double-glazed sash windows will often attempt to mimic the original appearance through the use of nonfunctional muntins or ‘glazing bars’, which are applied to the surface of the glazing, and give the appearance that the sash is made up of several smaller panes, whereas in reality, each sash consists of only one, large, double glazed unit. Sash windows are relatively low maintenance and offer huge advantages in return (style, aesthetics, abides by laws (relating to older houses and buildings), natural resources etc.), however wellmaintained sash windows should last generations without needing parts replaced. It is also possible to clean all the glass from within the building by sliding the two panes to different positions. A significant advantage of sash windows is that they provide efficient cooling of interiors during warm weather. Opening both the top and bottom of a sash window by equal amounts allows warm air at the top of the room to escape, thus drawing relatively cool air from outside into the room through the bottom opening.
“The invention of the sash window is sometimes credited, without conclusive evidence, to Robert Hooke”
