With a fabulous island setting on the banks of the River Thames, immaculate lawns and Pimms aplenty, Ladies Night at Royal Windsor Racecourse on August 23rd is a definite date for the diary. ith a fabulous island setting on the banks of the River Thames, immaculate lawns and Pimms aplenty, Ladies Night at Royal Windsor Racecourse on August 23rd is a definite date for the diary. he original, international ‘man band’ of opera Tenors Un Limited are back on home turf in Surrey at the Richmond Theatre on the 26th of September at 7:30pm with their fabulous new production ‘Show the suit who’s boss!’

“When you travel a lot it’s great to be able to sing on your own back door step,” says Jem. “Our families and friends are always asking what we are up to and how the shows are going and bringing the tour to Richmond will give us a great opportunity to show off to them again,” he jokes. “We are really pleased with this show,” explains Scott, “We wanted to go on the road with one that was even better than our last. This is a great challenge after 12 years of singing together, but we are confident that the audience will love our versions of Something’s Coming from West Side Story, Bob Dylan’s Make you Feel my Love, Falling slowly from the musical Once, as well as popular classical must haves, the Pearl Fishers duet, Nessun Dorma, O Sole Mio, alongside some self- penned titles and many more. “Being local has enabled us to call on the services of the fabulous new Surbiton based Arnould Girls Choir directed by Rebecca Gresson,” enthuses Jem. “I heard them singing at the Richmond Music Festival this year and I was amazed at their pure sound and beautiful harmonies and I thought we must sing with them if we get the chance….the fact that my daughter is in the choir is a lucky bonus!” “We will also be raising money for the wonderful Holly Lodge Centre based in Richmond Park.” says Paul proudly. “The Holly Lodge offers all children the chance to experience our beautiful Richmond Park in a fun and educational way and we have been patrons for about ten years now. Being fortunate enough to be able to support both these local elements is very special and we enjoy doing it when we can.”

Get busy with bees

ithout honey bees many of our fruits and vegetables would not be available. A decrease in the bee population would also result in a poorer environment as many of our wild flowers and trees rely on bee pollination. A couple from Surrey explain how their passion to help bees resulted in them becoming beekeepers. Geoff and Marion Cooper have been keeping bees for over 30 years and about 20 years ago took on the hives at Painshill 18th century landscape garden. What first attracted them to bees was their ability to perform complicated tasks. “We were astonished at how they can make wax cells which are perfect hexagons, can navigate accurately within several miles of their hive, and control the temperature of their nest to very close to 34ºC throughout the year”, explains Marion Cooper. Each year the Coopers take care to ensure

12 AUGUST 2014

their bees are free from disease, that their hives are in good condition and there is enough honey stores for their requirements. This takes commitment as they can be looking after as many as 60,000 bees in each colony during the summer months. “Beekeeping requires more knowledge now that bees are in serious trouble, therefore it’s important to go on a course. To find one near you contact The British Beekeepers Association (BBKA). As well as being instructive, the courses are relaxed and enjoyable”, says Marion. Beekeepers feel that their work is beneficial to the environment, but one of the huge bonuses of beekeeping is the production of honey, although this varies considerably with the season, the weather, the bees’ health and the availability of forage at the right time of the year. Marion explains: “Some colonies never thrive and produce no excess honey for the beekeeper, while a few

very good colonies can produce over 100 lbs. in a year; in Surrey an average of 50 lb. would be considered good. We are very fortunate with our hives at Painshill because there is so much varied forage for the bees including sweet chestnut trees. Their flowers are a major nectar source for our bees towards the end of the season.” Even if you don’t fancy becoming a beekeeper there are lots of other things you can do to help the honey bees, like not using garden chemicals and growing bee-friendly plants. You can even sponsor a hive through the BBKA. Remember, more than one third of all the food we eat is from plants pollinated by bees and many of the wild flowers and trees we enjoy all around us every day rely on bee pollination, so it’s vitally important we help them. You can buy the Cooper’s award winning honey from the Painshill Shop. www.painshill.co.uk

A FLAVOUR JOURNEY In the village of Ripley, a stone’s throw from the helter-skelter of the A3 and the frustration of the M25, is a hidden oasis of calm – and balm – for the soul. For in the middle of the high street, nestled behind an elegant Georgian façade, is Drake’s, Surrey’s best-kept fine dining secret. By Joanna Wood

T

his Michelin-starred restaurant is the domain of restaurateurs Steve and Serina Drake and it’s celebrating its tenth birthday this year. In the last decade chef Steve has developed and refined his food beyond recognition, from essentially a very classic French style of cooking, to what the foodie mafia would term modern Anglo-European. These days he’s ditched the conventional three course meal option for a tasting menu – in his words, a “flavour journey” – which guides diners gently through seven courses of clever, creative and, importantly, flavourpacked food. Don’t worry – the courses are delicate mouthfuls, which, with each successive dish, build to a satisfying finale. They are elegant, wonderfully balanced offerings – showcasing some of the best produce in the UK – with sophisticated layering of taste and textures. You won’t leave feeling over-full, just satisfied: and that’s even with a taste-tickler (amuse bouche), bread and petits fours included in your culinary odyssey. That’s the mark of a very talented chef. At this time of the year, typically, a ‘journey’ might kick off with a palate awakener of watercress soup. Mine had a perfect little quail’s egg peeping out of the vibrant green liquid and a hint of smoked

tomato (which gave this soup a really substantial, ‘meaty’ body). Accompanying sour dough bread and red pepper brioche were served with onion and thyme butter (surprisingly delicate). It all added up to a refined whole, which set the scene for the rest of the meal. I can honestly say that none of the ensuing menu disappointed. Steve’s menu was a deft exploration of flavour and texture. Interesting, but not silly, ingredient matches popped up from time to time. Tender, tasty Cornish lamb – mouthfuls of both breast and saddle – was teamed with pickled rhubarb (sweeter than you’d think) and samphire (more usually served with fish). It worked. A grapefruit curd (one of two desserts) came with the savoury kick of peanut praline and a condensed milk sorbet. You get the drift. I could go on, as every dish had its highlights. The food was considerably enhanced, too, by skilful wine pairing. A lovely biodynamic Chablis with a turbot dish in particular, stood out. And I need also to mention the elegant, clean lined, dining room (look out for the cow themed wallpaper at the back), and the glorious garden in which to sip a pre prandial glass of bubbly on a summer’s day. All of this means that Drake’s is the equal to main a more famous London restaurant. But don’t take my word for it – check it out for yourself and I guarantee you’ll find that Steve is serving up some of the best food in the south east of England.

Next comes the crucial wrapping. The roll of clear plastic may look like ordinary cling film but it’s actually Wrapture. Katy explains that using normal cling film’s not advised and may even be quite dangerous. The Wrapture traps heat, helping the oils’ active ingredients penetrate deeper to break down fat cell content, which is then flushed out of your system through your pee, basically. Katy wraps up my limbs and torso then wraps my legs together. Clients who don’t like the idea of their chest being wrapped can have the top half left open. I was worried about feeling claustrophobic but I actually found it OK. When Katy helps me lie down, I’m so relaxed that I soon drift off. An hour later, she carefully cuts me out and massages in any oil remnants. When she re-takes my measurements, I’m amazed - I’ve shed seven inches in total, including half an inch on each thigh and an inch on my tummy. This isn’t a miracle cure though; I need to lay off the caffeine, booze and junk food and avoid showering for another 72 hours while the treatment remains active. For those wanting more significant inch-loss, longer courses are advised, but a single session is a great quick-fix before a holiday or special occasion. I leave feeling lighter and relaxed and my skin feels beautifully soft and nourished to boot. Shrinking Violet treatment, available in salons nationwide, starting from £80. Just 16% of women embrace ageing, according to a recent UK Confidence Index by L’Oreal. GOING OUT WITH A BLAZE

At this time of year most of us are thinking of holidays or just enjoying our gardens. This year we have been lucky and we have already had our fair share of sunshine, making up for the damp autumn, winter and spring we had to put up with beforehand.

I

n our gardens some of us will be enjoying the colour provided by the bedding plants and early summer herbaceous, but it will not be long before the reducing day length and dropping temperatures slows the production of new flowers in these plants and finally they will stop. It is at this time that you need to be thinking about how you can prolong colour and interest in your garden Plants which can be planted at this time of year and still provide colour provided you

use mature plants include many daisy like flowers including echinacea, helenium and rudbeckia. Many of these plants actually provide better value for money than bedding plants, as they are perennial and so will provide colour not just this year but for many years to come. Most will not only provide useful colour

this year but the plants will bulk up sometimes multiplying giving even better colour in future years as the plants mature. Many of the late summer and autumn flowering perennials seem to bear flowers in warm shades as if in preparation for the climax of the year when the leaves of deciduous trees and shrubs take over giving

HOUS E & GA R D E N

the finale to the summer! If you want your newly acquired plants to flower this year I would recommend the use of plants in 2 litre pots or bigger. Two or three litre plants of perennial plants in most cases are large enough to give a balance between reliability of flowering and budget. If you want the best from your new acquisitions, remember to water them regularly and feed with a good quality liquid feed such as miracle gro or tomato feed, this will ensure the plants do not suffer stress and will prolong flowering. Do not forget to protect your plants with slug deterrents or killers as they act like magnets for these voracious molluscs.

Crocosmia, or ‘montbretia’ is a clump forming perennial with grass like leaves and long spikes bearing numerous yellow, orange or red trumpet flowers along it’s length. At this time of year it can be planted in pots, although in spring it is also available as a bulb. Liatris another plant with grass like leaves has long erect spikes of pale purple flower and also grows from a bulb like structure. If setting autumn ablaze, is what you intend, why not plant Kniphofia or ‘Red Hot Pokers’. Whether you are looking to totally replant a border or you are just looking to infill with perennials to give colour late summer and autumn, there is plenty of ‘value for money’ perennials available to plant at this time of year. www.plantsforall.co.uk

Plants such as Echinacea, Helenium and Rudbeckia are reliable late flowering perennials and are closely related. The giveaway is the central cone from which the petals radiate, giving their common name ‘coneflowers’. The difference is in the colour of the petals which are white, pink or purple in Echinacea, yellows and oranges in Rudbeckia and yellow, orange and reds in Helenium. All three species are ideal for growing in the middle or rear of beds, giving height to displays, best planted in groups to maximise their displays, taller specimens may require staking where necessary. Other plants for colour at this time of year include: Crocosmia, Kniphofia, Penstemon, Solidago, Phlox, Liatris, Anemone japonica and Sedum spectabile.

Does One Choose a “Standard” Replacement Front Door?

D

oor Energy Ratings were introduced by Government officials back in 2012 to provide a simple and effective way of assessing the energy efficiency of residential doors (similar to the ratings shown on white electrical goods). Some UK manufacturers have subsequently have designed composite front doors with double glazing that is A-Rated as standard, regardless of the size of glass or threshold option a property owner chooses. According to the free online dictionary the word composite as a noun is “A complex material, such as wood or fiberglass, in which two or more distinct, structurally complementary substances, especially metals, ceramics, glasses, and polymers, combine to produce structural or functional properties not present in any individual component.” When using the word composite as an adjective, the free online dictionary states “Made up of distinct components; compound”. Consequently there are a large number of door products in England being offered as composite, many of which are frankly just not of the quality that “real” composite doors are supposed to have, as one can purchase “cheap and nasty” replacement “composite” doors, then sadly live to regret it later. Generally speaking if a

composite door is not more expensive than UPVC and aluminium double glazed replacement doors, don’t expect it to perform to the same standard as properly accredited and certificated energy rated composite door products. For example, the “Ultimate Composite Door” from Rockdoor is a high class door which features a 50mm thick door sash 3mm thick external and internal skin, Argon filled double glazed units, soft coat thermally efficient glass and a carbon fibre reinforced inner-frame. Branded as “the Ultimate Door” it is believed by folk within the industry to be the most advanced thermally efficient and secure composite door available in the UK at present. In addition, with a security rating of 1, the Ultimate composite door has a unique carbon fibre reinforced inner-frame, plus has German engineered multi point hook locks made from solid brass. Cylinder guard protectors, 6-pin cylinder Winkhaus lock option and a durable sash make the Ultimate Composite Door virtually impenetrable to burglars. The Ultimate door is designed to be as secure as possible. Multipoint locks, steel drill plates, cylinder protectors, outer & inner frame reinforcing and anti-bumping cylinders all offer peace of mind to any UK homeowner. The Ultimate Composite Door is made with a unique engineered door system ‘tailor made’ for strength, not ‘cut to fit’ which weakens a door. The Ultimate door is designed with a unique reinforced inner and outer-frame, specially designed to hold all the components including locks, deadbolts and hinges. Thermally efficiency wise, the Ultimate Composite Door has an energy saving A-Rating for thermal performance thanks to its press glazed technology, sash thickness, PU foam, UPVC skins and thermally efficient glass. The heat loss of this particular composite door is the lowest in the industry, as the Ultimate door features high performance low-emissivity soft coated glass which offers excellent thermal insulation when incorporated within a Low E Argon filled double glazed unit. Rockdoors are manufactured from high impact unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (UPVC) to match the other windows and rooflines in

ULTIMATE COMPOSITE DOOR FEATURES & BENEFITS These top of the range composite doors are called “Ultimate Composite Doors” for a reason. These reasons are also why they cost more than cheaper doors, as they are “top of the range”

a property, whilst hiding minor scratches. All coloured/real wood effect Ultimate Composite Doors are protected by Heat Shield technology meaning your Rockdoor won’t crack, bend or warp in hot weather. Being low maintenance, UPVC only requires an occasional wipe down about once a year with warm soapy water. As Ultimate doors do not contain any wood, it’s impervious to water meaning it won’t swell or rot, so will therefore last longer that ordinary PVC doors. The Ultimate door makes a truly excellent all round residential front entrance door as well as a high quality composite stable door or pair of composite French doors. The way to be certain is to compare each product’s benefits and features with other replacement doors so you can see the advantages of the Ultimate door for yourself, as less expensive alternatives are not going to be able to stack up on a like for like basis, as there is currently no other composite door in the UK that can match the all-round performance of the Ultimate Composite Door.
