Welcome to our January issue... McMullen, the whole hop brewery based in Hertford, has been run by the McMullen family since 1827. Peter McMullen, a Master Cooper by profession, first established the business, making barrels and casks and selling them to the ten small brewing companies that were established in Hertford town at that time. He soon decided to go into brewing, starting in an outhouse adjacent to his cooperage before building and moving to a full scale commercial brewery, known as the Mill Bridge Brewery, less than three years later. It was not until Boxing Day 1836 that Peter bought his first pub, the Greyhound at Bengeo, on the edge of Hertford. The deal included three cottages on four acres of land at a consideration of £481. Like the Greyhound, over half the current pubs owned by McMullen have been sustainably operated by the company for over 100 years, and continue to provide customers with beers from the brewery. We take a closer look at the fascinating history of our local brewery. This Valentine’s Day the luxury Brocket Hall estate is embracing good, old-fashioned romance by opening the doors of its opulent 18th Century manor to lovebirds looking to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in the amorous day.



As an estate, Brocket Hall has a rich and varied history that has seen its fair share of love and romance, dating back to the 18th Century. Its most notable love story is that of Lady Caroline Lamb, the wife of the second Lord Melbourne who owned the estate in the 1800s, and her romantic liaisons with the famous poet Lord Byron. Their whirlwind was a hot topic within society at the time and was described by Lady Caroline as ‘mad, bad and dangerous to know’. As well as this, the estate has been the residence of two former Prime Ministers and a country retreat for Queen Victoria. Today Brocket Hall specialises in love and romance, by hosting standout weddings across its three luxury venues. A handful of Marvel Comics’ most celebrated comic book covers have been launched as a limited edition collection of artwork. Featured works include Spider-Man, The Hulk and The Avengers which have all been personally signed by Stan Lee. Works are available for acquisition from Gallery Rouge in St Albans.

“Brush With Death” for The Shire London founder inspires MidSummer Masters The Shire London owner Tony Menai Davis announces star-studded celebrity golf event to raise money for the hospital which saved his life. Mid-Summer Masters, 21st June 2013, aims to raise £24,000 to pay for an ECMO machine at Papworth Hospital . May 31st 2012 seemed to be just another Thursday at The Shire London Golf Club, but it ended in a dramatic ambulance journey, and a brush with death for the club’s owner, Tony Menai Davis. And now the Welsh-born golf entrepreneur, who in December 2012 opened the West London Golf Centre near Ruislip has announced a celebrity golf day to be held at his golf club on the longest day of the year, to raise funds to buy an ECMO machine – the device which kept him alive, at Papworth Hospital.

nce upon a time a man would own one watch. It would be cared for, maintained and possibly only worn on special occasions rather than every day – especially if the owner worked in manual labour. I say ‘own’ rather than buy because this watch may have been passed down from father to son or bought as a gift for a significant birthday. Stan Lee!

The legend behind Marvel Comics celebrates his 91st Birthday


t an age when most people would be taking it easy, Lee is anything but pedestrian. It is impossible to overstate the impact Lee has had on millions of children both young and old through his magically escapist creations.

Born in New York City on December 28th, 1922, Stanley Martin Lieber was heavily influenced as a child by books and movies, particularly those with Errol Flynn in heroic roles. Growing up in the Bronx wasn’t easy, especially during the period of the Great Depression, and Lee harboured dreams of one day writing the great American novel. Lee got his first break when, with the help of his uncle, he became an assistant in 1939 at the then newly created Timely Comics. “In those days [the artists] dipped the pen in ink, [so] I had to make sure the inkwells were filled. I went down and got them their lunch, I did proof reading, I erased the pencils from the finished pages for them”. The young Stanley Lieber’s writing ambitions were to take a leap forward with his debut contribution to the third Captain America Comics issue, where he first used the pseudonym ‘Stan Lee’ (which he later adopted as his legal name).

By his 19th birthday Lee had been promoted to interim Editor. In the 1960’s, Timely Comics would evolve into Marvel Comics, and thus an empire began. Stan Lee has been responsible for co-creating some of the most memorable superheroes in Marvel Comics history; with Jack Kirby he created The Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and X-Men; with Bill Everett he created Daredevil and with Steve Ditko he created Doctor Strange and the hugely successful Spider-Man. Design Trends for 2014

Now is a great time to reinvigorate your home and add those touches which will make all the difference for the year ahead.

As the Christmas decorations come down, you are presented with a perfect opportunity to reflect on how you can bring the most out of your living space. Maybe it’s time to change the curtains, add new furnishings or simply change the wall colours. David Keeps from the Wall Street Journal identifies that for the last few years the colour trend has been towards lilacs and purples, but that is now changing. Elle Décor agrees, citing Pantone’s latest colour range of bright and bold colours in particular ‘Radiant Orichid’ which is a deep blue. Cobalt, navy blue and light blue will also heavily feature this year. “We are going to see some very dramatic rooms with dark walls” Jeanine Hays of writes. “Move over white walls, in 2014 we’ll be seeing rooms with a lot more

drama and glamour. Dark, moody walls in black will be the perfect backdrop to the accessories that we are loving right now”. Top New York Interior Designer Sara Story commented “Everyone will be focusing on art in 2014 – it’s so much more approachable these days”. When asked where she felt design styles were heading, she believes retro and vintage art will be strong this year. “I think we’ll see a trend towards chameleon decor. It was not until Boxing Day 1836 that Peter bought his first pub, the Greyhound at Bengeo, on the edge of Hertford. The deal included three cottages on four acres of land at a consideration of £481. In 1891 a McMullen brewery was built in the centre of Hertford along with the first well which was ‘sunk’ to a depth of 140 feet. It took nine days to complete the job and cost £93-18s-8d! Since then two more wells have been ‘sunk’, going down some 250 feet (the equivalent of Nelson’s Column), maintaining McMullen’s own unique supply of natural water for brewing operations, to ensure quality and consistency. As the business continued to grow expansion was needed, and 1984 saw the construction of a large state of the art brewery at the original site, 2 2 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4

to supply the growing demand for cask ale and lager from McMullen’s many ‘free trade’ customers and its own pub estate. In the mid-1990s the consistent quality of McMullen’s cask ales was recognised when it was presented with the first ‘Brewer of the Year’ award from the Parliamentary Beer Club. It has continued to receive numerous industry awards, including being named as East Anglia Brewer of the Year by CAMRA in 2010. McMullen was a finalist of the Tenanted Pub Company of the Year category at the Publican’s Awards in 2011 and 2012, and was Highly Commended in 2012. The company continued to grow, and 2005 saw the opening of the McMullen Training Centre and the Development Kitchen, while it was also awarded first place in the National Industry Training Awards for having the Best Development Programme in Managed Houses. In 2006 a new smaller brewery, the Whole Hop Brewery, was opened after a £1million investment. The new brewery was designed by Head Brewer, Chris Evans, to ensure it consistently produces cask ales that meet stringent high standards to reassure cask ale connoisseurs. This modern, clean and efficient brewhouse allows precise control over temperature, clarity, colour, taste and the time taken during each process.




The company now operates 49 tenanted pubs and 86 managed outlets, including seven Baroosh style bars, the first of which opened in Hertford in 2000. While the majority of McMullen pubs and bars are located in Hertfordshire the estate ranges from central London to Chelmsford in the East, to Marlow in the West, to Cambridge in the North and Fleet in the South. McMullen believes in working closely with all its tenants and operators. David Beckham buys £600,000 Damien Hirst painting… for his daughter’s new bedroom She may be just two years old but celebrity tot Harper Beckham is already on her way to developing a refined eye for art and fashion.


overs were spotted carrying a Damien Hirst painting into the Beckham’s new mansion in Kensington, London. The seven foot painting of a pink heart embellished with butterflies is aptly titled “Daddy’s Girl” and is valued at £600,000., dwarfing a similar artwork commissioned by them for daughter Harper’s first birthday in July 2012. Hirst, who recently painted a minimal Mickey Mouse for charity, is a friend of David Beckham and the Beckham residence is home to many of his works. A source was quoted as saying, “The removal firm was extra careful with the Damien Hirst. It was packaged up and no-one wanted to drop it and put a hole in such a valuable work of art.” This isn’t the first time that the Beckhams have splashed out for their only daughter. Harper’s legendary wardrobe includes outfits and accessories by top designers including Marc Jacobs, Chloé, Burberry and Stella McCartney. The couple, who are estimated to earn around £100,000 a day, paid £31.5million for the Grade II-listed property – and did not need a mortgage. The purchase went through in September, but was officially recorded only last month.

Apparently, their new home has seven bathrooms for its eight bedrooms and more than 9,000 sq ft of floor space, not including a 100ft Oriental garden. Interior designer Kelly Hoppen is believed to have been drafted in to help with plans to completely revamp the property. The couple will sleep in a huge master bedroom, there are three guest rooms, and the kitchen will be fitted to restaurant standards. As well as a large walk-in wardrobe/dressing room, Mrs Beckham, 39, will have a personalised manicure and hairdressing room which will have four nail bars, hairdressing chairs and mirrors surrounded with bulbs. There will be a playroom for the couple’s children – Brooklyn, 14, Romeo, 11, and Cruz, eight, and daughter Harper, now two – who will each have their own bedroom. Beckham, 38, has a personal ‘snug’ in the roof of the house which will be equipped with a bar and a pool table. The couple have a range of business ventures that have allowed them to buy their new home without the need for a loan. His company, Footwork Productions, showed a profit for 2012 of £14.7million, up from £13.4million. Beckham Ventures, which handles Victoria’s fashion business, posted a profit of £2million.

he six-storey Grade I listed Regency mansion boasts 50,000 sq ft of living space, nearly as large as a whole football pitch, making it one of the capital’s largest private homes. With a view of St. James’ Park and within walking distance of Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus. It is situated off The Mall, and is one of the most exclusive streets in London with few residential properties.

Reports have suggested that a ‘strictly confidential’ brochure, which describes 18 Carlton House Terrace as ‘probably the finest residence in London’ has been circulating among the super-wealthy. The property is registered in the British Virgin Islands, and said to be owned by a member of the Saudi Royal family. The secret brochure apparently shows interior photographs which were taken in the 1890s, because the current owner does not want to advertise the contents of his home for security reasons. Details on the interior are sketchy, but there is believed to be a magnificent double staircase and a huge ballroom. According to reports, the house has four storeys above ground and two below, that could be converted into a spa, cinema, and swimming area. The owner has reportedly spent millions restoring the town house to its former glory. Property expert Henry Pryor, who pointed out that the ‘nearest corner shop will be Fortnum & Mason’, said: ‘I think it will almost certainly be bought by a foreign buyer.’ The property is 1,537 times more expensive than the average house sold last month in the UK, which was worth £162,606. At the asking price, the buyer will face a £17.5million bill for stamp duty. Despite the shaky economic recovery, 2012 was a record year for sales in London worth more than £5million, according to research by estate agent Savills. Last year, more than 400 properties were sold over that threshold, up from 350 in 2011. With so many properties now fetching nine-figure sums, oligarchs might be tempted to move to Kensington’s Egerton Crescent, Britain’s priciest street - where they can pick up a bargain with the average house costing just £8million. If 18 Carlton House Terrace reaches its £250million asking price, it will be the UK’s most expensive home - but it is not the only super-pricey property to reach the market in the past year. Last autumn, a huge house at Rutland Gate overlooking Hyde Park was put on sale for £300million, although its price was slashed when it failed to find a buyer. Around the same time, 1 Cornwall Terrace, opposite Regent’s Park, was advertised for £100million, which estate agents said was the highest price ever asked for a terraced house. Outside Central London, Heath Hall in Hampstead was also marketed at £100million - which later had to be lowered to £65million. Cambridge House on Piccadilly, formerly home to the In and Out Club, is currently being renovated and could fetch more than £200million when it is sold. The previous record for a London sale is £136 million paid for a property at One Hyde Park in Knightsbridge.

he historic Scotland yard building will take a new look as Londonbased developer, the Galliard Group together with the Crown Estate is all set to convert the building into either Mercer London or Chateau Marmont London, or an equivalent ‘Hollywood-level’ brand. Spread over 92,000 sq ft, the 235-bedroom hotel will open in 2016 and will boast of the capital’s most luxurious and expensive VIP suites, available for £10,000 a night. The new hotel will be located in a quiet and tranquil street with London’s most famous landmarks including Trafalgar Square, 10 Downing Street, the Mall and Buckingham Palace in close proximity. The Galliard Group have already acquired a 125-year lease on the building. Starting this month, the next 26 months will see construction in progress – costing over £50 million. Key features at the new hotel will include a grand entrance foyer, winter garden lounge, signature restaurant, cocktail bar and lounge, and a 120-seat main conference room. The new development will see the building extended with two new levels of basement and two new floors above the existing roof top. While the Imperial red brick and stone façade of the building will be retained, inside the building will be fitted with bespoke specification and state-of-theart technology, entertainment systems and security systems. The adjoining Edwardian office building at 1, Great Scotland Yard will be incorporated into the new hotel, with the space being used to create a VIP suite. Arranged over several floors, the suite will include a VIP bedroom suite on its own private floor complete with walk-in dressing rooms, day room and a spastyle main bathroom with living room, media room and other entertaining on other levels – making it one of the most luxurious and expensive hotel suites in central London. Stephen Conway, chief executive of Galliard Group said: ‘Our vision is to create one of London’s most outstanding 5-star hotels. It really is a blue-chip building with grand architecture, a fascinating history and large dramatic interiors.’The street is quiet and tranquil yet on the doorstep of London’s most

famous landmarks including Trafalgar Square, 10 Downing Street, the Mall and Buckingham Palace.’ Rich in history, the building at 3-5 Great Scotland began life as an Embassystyle dwelling for the Kings of Scotland when they visited King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I at the neighboring Whitehall Palace. In 1829, Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel selected Great Scotland Yard as the headquarters of the newly founded Metropolitan Police force. It was where investigations into the likes of Jack The Ripper were centred, and featured in the novels of Charles Dickens and Arthur Conan Doyle. The building’s main entrance was at 4 Whitehall Place, but a public office was installed to the rear at 3-5 Great Scotland Yard, giving the headquarters their famous name. And in 1910, the current Edwardian building was constructed on the site and served as the British Army Recruitment Office and Royal Military Police headquarters. Further in 1982, a refurbishment introduced a new atrium and the building later became the Ministry of Defence Library until 2004. Varicose veins are a common problem affecting at least 20% of the adult population in the UK. ey occur when small valves inside the veins stop functioning correctly. Rather than blood flowing effortlessly back towards the heart, the blood stagnates within the veins causing aching,

Selecting the right Live-in care provider for you

For many people considering residential care for themselves or their loved ones, Live-in care may provide a better alternative. Live-in care supports people with wide ranging needs to stay independent in the comfort of their own home. It works by providing a trained ‘Personal Assistant’ (PA) who lives with them 24/7, supporting their everyday life.

Making sure the provider of Live-in care shares the same values and principles as you is critical. At Each Life, our value statement and code of conduct is clearly displayed on our web site.

Each Life was set up by two experienced clinicians, Anne Thain (a former senior nurse with 30 years of experience) and Dr Tony Felton, (a general practitioner) who have a combined passion to provide high quality care for clients in their own home and encouraging them to live the lives they choose rather than one dictated by others. Clients who choose Live-in care have needs that range from straightforward ‘companionship’ to more complex support.

How will Live-in care meet my needs? For many clients, especially those who are older but want to remain independent, Companionship services usually include shopping, meal preparation, housework and support for social activities. For clients with greater needs, PA’s can provide support for personal hygiene and dressing. In more complex cases, for example, clients with specific illness or neurological impairment, their PA works alongside healthcare professionals to support rehabilitation and helps the client to regain independence. We know that supporting quality of life for the whole family, including family members who may live some distance from the client, is key to the success of Live-in care. Each Life services span all age ranges, from children to the elderly, and cover a wide geography across London and the South East. In Each Life, all our PA’s are selected, trained and managed by a former senior nurse. This process starts with a meeting with the client to gain an understanding of their lifestyle needs and objectives. From there, a more formal assessment is undertaken and summarised in a ‘personal lifestyle plan’ which is used to select the PA. 6 4 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4

Most clients who use Live-in care require some sort of ‘hands on’ support, which falls under the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) regulatory framework. Reputable providers like Each Life will be registered with the CQC, which you can check on their web site ( You should have some choice over selecting your PA. At Each Life, you will be directly involved in the selection of your PA. Reputable providers should also provide PA’s with comprehensive induction and training programmes before they can be deemed competent.

How much does Live-in care cost? Live-in care is generally less expensive than most nursing homes, with costs starting from £600 per week. Many of our clients fund their care directly, however other sources of funding that you might be eligible for may come from Local Authorities or NHS. Most clients are also entitled to an Attendance Allowance.

Making sure it’s right for you You need to be 100% confident that you understand the financial arrangements for your Live-in care before signing any contract. This includes a clear understanding of who employs your PA, agreeing rates for work, set up fees and on-going management fees. Careful consideration was given to the choice of construction materials, using locally sourced materials, the architects also went as far as specifying natural paints and stains, both internally and externally. In keeping with it’s design philosophy, heat pumps, rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling systems were also specified to provide an energy efficient and environmentally friendly scheme. Robert Adam, the 18th century designer and Architect, introduced cornice, Fibrous plasterwork or ornate mouldings into Great Britain. He incorporated into his ceiling decorations, plaster reliefs. He would then repeat these motifs in the furnishings, carpets and woodwork. The plaster reliefs formed no function except to embellish and beautify. Much the same as they do, today. There is an immense amount of ornate plasterwork in Great Britain in many different styles, from the finest town and country houses to 19th century railway cottages in Waterloo. London. Over the passage of time the ornate plaster mouldings has been destroyed, damaged, heavily painted or just ripped out because it became unfashionable. The ceiling in the main reception needed to be replaced, which meant that all the original ornate mouldings, would need to be replaced. The mouldings were removed and catalogued. Taken into the workshop to be cleaned, reproduced and then returned to the house to be installed. The result was a stunning ceiling, restored to its former glory. Exterior mouldings As the Company has grown we have been asked if the expertise we bring to the internal mouldings can be transferred to the exterior. With the introduction of a product called Jesmonite, a resin-bonded cement with have been able to adapt our skills and knowledge to produce high quality finishes to exteriors. The Advantage Basement Co. commissioned us to reproduce the external mouldings to the façade of the property in Richmond (below) to match the external mouldings next door. The Richmond Society’s top award of a brass plaque was presented for the transformation of this property in Richmond. They said, ‘The replacement of a 1950s semi, which itself was an infill resulting from bombing during the Second War, with a carefully designed reconstruction of a 19th century villa, completely in keeping with the existing historic townscape and being of the highest build quality. What does the future hold for divorcing couples? One of the questions most frequently asked of family lawyers by clients facing separation or divorce is “What am I entitled to?” The answer to this question will depend entirely on the particular circumstances of the case. Sue Woods, a Family Lawyer at Taylor Walton solicitors looks at how finances are resolved upon the breakdown of a marriage.


hen considering how the assets should be divided, there is a general principle of equality. However, in many cases, to divide the assets equally would produce an unfair or totally impractical result. Following a full consideration of all the circumstances, in most cases it will be necessary to depart from equality and for the assets to be divided in some other way. The factors to be considered are:-

to run two households than one. Where there has been a very comfortable standard of living, needs will be assessed more generously than in cases where the parties have always had to manage on a tight budget.

What are the resources available to the parties both in terms of income and assets? All types of assets and income can be taken into account including potential future assets such as inheritances. Inheritances will often be regarded differently to other assets even where the inheritance has already been received. Likewise, assets acquired before the marriage or after the parties separate can be treated differently to those acquired during their relationship. How such assets are treated will depend on the circumstances of the case and, in particular, the parties’ needs.

What contributions have each of the parties made? Exceptional contributions may affect the way the assets are divided. There are different types of contribution and the main breadwinner will not be considered to have made a greater contribution than the party remaining at home to look after the children.

What are the parties’ needs, responsibilities and liabilities? These will vary from one family to another. Although we all have the same basic need for food, clothing and shelter, what is considered reasonable will vary from case to case depending on the standard of living enjoyed during the marriage and the resources available. The children’s main carer will arguably have a more pressing housing need. If one party has remarried or is with a new partner, this new relationship might impose additional responsibilities or alternatively provide more available resources. The age of the parties and the length of the marriage. These factors can have an important bearing on the terms of any settlement. In the case of young spouses, particularly if there are no children involved, a clean break is likely to be appropriate with each party going their separate ways. On the other hand, in the case of a long marriage, a party who has effectively given up their career to look after the children cannot necessarily be expected to immediately go out to work and support themselves. The length of the marriage will be less significant where there are children of the marriage as they will represent a continuing responsibility. The standard of living during the marriage In most cases it will not be possible for the standard of living enjoyed during the marriage to be sustained after separation, it being far more expensive

Any physical or mental disability of either party This will be a factor insofar as a disability has a bearing on earning capacity, needs or life expectancy.

Is conduct taken into account? In most cases conduct or behaviour will not be taken into account and will only be relevant if it is exceptional or has had a direct effect on the resources available, particularly if one party has spent excessively or deliberately disposed of assets in an attempt to defeat the other party’s financial claims. Financial misconduct, including failure to disclose assets within court proceedings, is more likely to be taken into account than matrimonial misconduct e.g. adultery. Will loss of benefits be considered? If either party is likely to lose any benefit, for example pension entitlement, as a result of the dissolution of the marriage, this loss of benefits is a factor that should be taken into account when considering terms of settlement. In addition to these factors, recent case law has put an added “gloss” on how Judges apply the law, to take into account the principles of “compensation” and “sharing”. However, what the law is trying to achieve in every case is a result that is fair, reasonable and practical, with the needs of any children being the first consideration. At the end of the day, the majority of cases will be driven by needs and practicalities.
