Welcome to our January issue... McMullen, the whole hop brewery based in Hertford, has been run by the McMullen family since 1827. Peter McMullen, a Master Cooper by profession, first established the business, making barrels and casks and selling them to the ten small brewing companies that were established in Hertford town at that time. He soon decided to go into brewing, starting in an outhouse adjacent to his cooperage before building and moving to a full scale commercial brewery, known as the Mill Bridge Brewery, less than three years later. It was not until Boxing Day 1836 that Peter bought his first pub, the Greyhound at Bengeo, on the edge of Hertford. The deal included three cottages on four acres of land at a consideration of £481. Like the Greyhound, over half the current pubs owned by McMullen have been sustainably operated by the company for over 100 years, and continue to provide customers with beers from the brewery. We take a closer look at the fascinating history of our local brewery. This Valentine’s Day the luxury Brocket Hall estate is embracing good, old-fashioned romance by opening the doors of its opulent 18th Century manor to lovebirds looking to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in the amorous day.

As an estate, Brocket Hall has a rich and varied history that has seen its fair share of love and romance, dating back to the 18th Century. Its most notable love story is that of Lady Caroline Lamb, the wife of the second Lord Melbourne who owned the estate in the 1800s, and her romantic liaisons with the famous poet Lord Byron. Their whirlwind was a hot topic within society at the time and was described by Lady Caroline as ‘mad, bad and dangerous to know’. As well as this, the estate has been the residence of two former Prime Ministers and a country retreat for Queen Victoria. Today Brocket Hall specialises in love and romance, by hosting standout weddings across its three luxury venues. A handful of Marvel Comics’ most celebrated comic book covers have been launched as a limited edition collection of artwork. Featured works include Spider-Man, The Hulk and The Avengers which have all been personally signed by Stan Lee. Works are available for acquisition from Gallery Rouge in St Albans.

THE SHIRE The only Seve Ballesteros designed golf course in the UK

“I’ve designed many courses around the world, but this is my first in the UK. I was waiting for an opportunity to create a golf complex with a course which looked and played like I thought it should and with first class clubhouse and leisure facilities.”

W

We are doing our bit to encourage beginners by launching a new Get Into Golf membership... new blood is essential if golf is to attract the commercial investment it needs to keep up with other sports, many of which receive more government funds than golf, in this country at least.

One look at the Ballesteros Masters golf course in May will tell you that our magnificent, international-class golf course truly will look, and play, better this season than it has ever done. Elsewhere on this website you can read about some of the work which Tony Peterson’s course management team has been doing, but we are as passionate about presenting the course in best-possible condition, as you are about playing it. On the greens, we’ll average between 10 and 11 on the Stimpmeter this season, much faster than the average for Hertfordshire. Augusta is 13.

“Brush With Death” for The Shire London founder inspires MidSummer Masters The Shire London owner Tony Menai Davis announces star-studded celebrity golf event to raise money for the hospital which saved his life. Mid-Summer Masters, 21st June 2013, aims to raise £24,000 to pay for an ECMO machine at Papworth Hospital . May 31st 2012 seemed to be just another Thursday at The Shire London Golf Club, but it ended in a dramatic ambulance journey, and a brush with death for the club’s owner, Tony Menai Davis. And now the Welsh-born golf entrepreneur, who in December 2012 opened the West London Golf Centre near Ruislip has announced a celebrity golf day to be held at his golf club on the longest day of the year, to raise funds to buy an ECMO machine – the device which kept him alive, at Papworth Hospital.

e’re looking forward to another eventful and enjoyable summertime at The Shire London, and as we enter our seventh season we have a typically full agenda here at the club. Although many of you will by now have visited our new range in west London, and will be aware of the two golf courses we are building over there, no matter what happens elsewhere in the group The Shire London will always be our priority. It is the standardsetter for everything which we are doing. Memberships at The Shire are among London’s most-prized, and we always strive to give you, our valued Members, the best possible service and quality.

Too much Time on your hands?

O

nce upon a time a man would own one watch. It would be cared for, maintained and possibly only worn on special occasions rather than every day – especially if the owner worked in manual labour. I say ‘own’ rather than buy because this watch may have been passed down from father to son or bought as a gift for a significant birthday. Ladies often went without a watch altogether and if they wore one, the same rules applied as for men. Back then, watches were an important and relatively expensive purchase and the idea of a collection or ‘wardrobe’ of watches would have been out of the question. Things have changed and, despite the fact that the correct time is displayed all around us on computer monitors, mobile phones and even microwave ovens, watch ownership continues to rise. Whether they are Swatches or the finest haute – horology

13 46 JDAENCUEAMRBYE2 R 0 1 24 0 1 3

more of us have an increasing number of watches. Not that these are curated collections, carefully built up after careful consideration of each purchase – rather we accumulate watches, as gifts, pieces bought in our youth that we would never wear now, family bequests as well as current favourites. Our tastes evolve over time and the watches that fall out of favour end up at the back of the drawer gathering dust. What better way to offset the cost of the festive season than by having a little clear-out? While a drawer full of cheap and cheerful quartz may not pay off the bills – you never know what you might find. That watch you inherited but never wear may be a vintage classic. You might find that you only wear white metal now, leaving a collection of gold or gold-plated pieces bereft and ignored. What may be a dated and ugly watch to you may be a retro

gem to a collector – or maybe not. Fellows Auctioneers handle more watches per year than any other UK auction house and offer watches for sale at a wide range of values. Valuations for auction are free and can be requested through the Fellows website very easily. With over 35 watch and watch-related auctions per year you never have long to wait for your items to sell. The auction process is an increasingly popular way to sell watches and jewellery. The worldwide exposure of the sales through the development of online bidding means that your goods achieve their true market value while the auction charges are often much lower than the margin a dealer or retail shop would hope to make. If you think you might have some unloved watches in the back of a drawer or the bottom of a jewellery box, get in touch with Fellows. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff will let you know whether it would be suitable for auction and how much you might expect to make.

Happy Birthday

Stan Lee!

The legend behind Marvel Comics celebrates his 91st Birthday

A

t an age when most people would be taking it easy, Lee is anything but pedestrian. It is impossible to overstate the impact Lee has had on millions of children both young and old through his magically escapist creations.

Born in New York City on December 28th, 1922, Stanley Martin Lieber was heavily influenced as a child by books and movies, particularly those with Errol Flynn in heroic roles. Growing up in the Bronx wasn’t easy, especially during the period of the Great Depression, and Lee harboured dreams of one day writing the great American novel. Lee got his first break when, with the help of his uncle, he became an assistant in 1939 at the then newly created Timely Comics. “In those days [the artists] dipped the pen in ink, [so] I had to make sure the inkwells were filled. I went down and got them their lunch, I did proof reading, I erased the pencils from the finished pages for them”. The young Stanley Lieber’s writing ambitions were to take a leap forward with his debut contribution to the third Captain America Comics issue, where he first used the pseudonym ‘Stan Lee’ (which he later adopted as his legal name).

By his 19th birthday Lee had been promoted to interim Editor. In the 1960’s, Timely Comics would evolve into Marvel Comics, and thus an empire began. Stan Lee has been responsible for co-creating some of the most memorable superheroes in Marvel Comics history; with Jack Kirby he created The Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and X-Men; with Bill Everett he created Daredevil and with Steve Ditko he created Doctor Strange and the hugely successful Spider-Man. The appetite for superheroes continues to rise, especially with the transfer of characters into blockbuster film creations, opening up Marvel to a whole new generation of enthusiasts. Demonstrating his fun side, Lee is well known for making cameo appearances in those films. When you’re next watching, see if you can spot him!

Design Trends for 2014

Now is a great time to reinvigorate your home and add those touches which will make all the difference for the year ahead.

As the Christmas decorations come down, you are presented with a perfect opportunity to reflect on how you can bring the most out of your living space. Maybe it’s time to change the curtains, add new furnishings or simply change the wall colours. David Keeps from the Wall Street Journal identifies that for the last few years the colour trend has been towards lilacs and purples, but that is now changing. Elle Décor agrees, citing Pantone’s latest colour range of bright and bold colours in particular ‘Radiant Orichid’ which is a deep blue. Cobalt, navy blue and light blue will also heavily feature this year. “We are going to see some very dramatic rooms with dark walls” Jeanine Hays of aphrochic.com writes. “Move over white walls, in 2014 we’ll be seeing rooms with a lot more

drama and glamour. Dark, moody walls in black will be the perfect backdrop to the accessories that we are loving right now”. Top New York Interior Designer Sara Story commented “Everyone will be focusing on art in 2014 – it’s so much more approachable these days”. When asked where she felt design styles were heading, she believes retro and vintage art will be strong this year. “I think we’ll see a trend towards chameleon decor. Instead of settling on one fixed look, people will opt for a versatile neutral base and use big-impact accents to easily change their decor.” states Arianna Vargas in House Beautiful With that in mind, here are a few art suggestions to get you started. You can view a wider selection of work by visiting www. galleryrouge.co.uk , or by visiting their studios in St Albans and Harpenden.

History of the McMullen Brewery McMullen, the whole hop brewery based in Hertford, has been run by the McMullen family since 1827. Peter McMullen, a Master Cooper by profession, first established the business, making barrels and casks and selling them to the ten small brewing companies that were established in Hertford town at that time.

H

e soon decided to go into brewing, starting in an outhouse adjacent to his cooperage before building and moving to a full scale commercial brewery, known as the Mill Bridge Brewery, less than three years later.

In 1891 a McMullen brewery was built in the centre of Hertford along with the first well which was ‘sunk’ to a depth of 140 feet. It took nine days to complete the job and cost £93-18s-8d! Since then two more wells have been ‘sunk’, going down some 250 feet (the equivalent of Nelson’s Column), maintaining McMullen’s own unique supply of natural water for brewing operations, to ensure quality and consistency. As the business continued to grow expansion was needed, and 1984 saw the construction of a large state of the art brewery at the original site, 2 2 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4

to supply the growing demand for cask ale and lager from McMullen’s many ‘free trade’ customers and its own pub estate. In the mid-1990s the consistent quality of McMullen’s cask ales was recognised when it was presented with the first ‘Brewer of the Year’ award from the Parliamentary Beer Club. It has continued to receive numerous industry awards, including being named as East Anglia Brewer of the Year by CAMRA in 2010. McMullen was a finalist of the Tenanted Pub Company of the Year category at the Publican’s Awards in 2011 and 2012, and was Highly Commended in 2012. The company continued to grow, and 2005 saw the opening of the McMullen Training Centre and the Development Kitchen, while it was also awarded first place in the National Industry Training Awards for having the Best Development Programme in Managed Houses. In 2006 a new smaller brewery, the Whole Hop Brewery, was opened after a £1million investment. The new brewery was designed by Head Brewer, Chris Evans, to ensure it consistently produces cask ales that meet stringent high standards to reassure cask ale connoisseurs. This modern, clean and efficient brewhouse allows precise control over temperature, clarity, colour, taste and the time taken during each process.

F E AT U R E

PETER MCMULLEN

C MULLEN AND TOM CHRIS EVANS, FERGUS M

The company now operates 49 tenanted pubs and 86 managed outlets, including seven Baroosh style bars, the first of which opened in Hertford in 2000. While the majority of McMullen pubs and bars are located in Hertfordshire the estate ranges from central London to Chelmsford in the East, to Marlow in the West, to Cambridge in the North and Fleet in the South. McMullen believes in working closely with all its tenants and operators. Being part of the Independent Family Brewers of Britain means it benefits enormously from that heritage and the ‘family’ feel that makes working with McMullen feel personal. McMullen prides itself on the long term sustainable relationships with its tenants. McMullen is committed to ensuring that it matches the right candidates to the right pubs to ensure long term success, and is always looking out for talented and driven entrepreneurs, though not necessarily experienced operators. McMullen has successfully helped many tenants to get their first business, whether by assisting them to gain entry financially, choosing the right agreement for them, or by training them in the skills needed to get into the business. McMullen believes that the right attitude and passion is more important than your bank balance or experience pulling pints!

FERGUS MCMULLEN

McMullen offers a range of flexible agreements to suit each applicant and pub, as well as different styles of pub; some are perfectly suited to those wishing to start off small with less investment and low rent, in order to develop skills and get ready for a bigger challenge in the future. As part of these assisted agreements, McMullen provides free induction courses, mentoring programmes, marketing support, financial training and rebates on business plan costs. McMullen sees itself as an integral part of Hertford, with many residents either working at the brewery or knowing someone who does, including several generations of the same family in some cases! Fergus McMullen, Production and Sales Director, is the sixth generation of the family to join the company. He comments: “We’re incredibly proud to have been a part of Hertford life for over 180 years, and could not imagine ever being anywhere else. The brewery has certainly changed since it first opened, but our dedication to offering customers quality, delicious cask ale, remains the same. “We look forward to continuing to be a Hertford icon for another 180 years!”

Hirst, who recently painted a minimal Mickey Mouse for charity, is a friend of David Beckham and the Beckham residence is home to many of his works. A source was quoted as saying, “The removal firm was extra careful with the Damien Hirst. It was packaged up and no-one wanted to drop it and put a hole in such a valuable work of art.” This isn’t the first time that the Beckhams have splashed out for their only daughter. Harper’s legendary wardrobe includes outfits and accessories by top designers including Marc Jacobs, Chloé, Burberry and Stella McCartney. The couple, who are estimated to earn around £100,000 a day, paid £31.5million for the Grade II-listed property – and did not need a mortgage. The purchase went through in September, but was officially recorded only last month.

Apparently, their new home has seven bathrooms for its eight bedrooms and more than 9,000 sq ft of floor space, not including a 100ft Oriental garden. Interior designer Kelly Hoppen is believed to have been drafted in to help with plans to completely revamp the property. The couple will sleep in a huge master bedroom, there are three guest rooms, and the kitchen will be fitted to restaurant standards. As well as a large walk-in wardrobe/dressing room, Mrs Beckham, 39, will have a personalised manicure and hairdressing room which will have four nail bars, hairdressing chairs and mirrors surrounded with bulbs. There will be a playroom for the couple’s children – Brooklyn, 14, Romeo, 11, and Cruz, eight, and daughter Harper, now two – who will each have their own bedroom. Beckham, 38, has a personal ‘snug’ in the roof of the house which will be equipped with a bar and a pool table. The couple have a range of business ventures that have allowed them to buy their new home without the need for a loan. His company, Footwork Productions, showed a profit for 2012 of £14.7million, up from £13.4million. Beckham Ventures, which handles Victoria’s fashion business, posted a profit of £2million.

Courage, Courtesy and Compassion

St Columba’s College provides a seamless education in an inspiring and challenging environment where boys from the age of four to 18 years old aspire to achieve their own best standard.

A

Catholic school, St Columba’s is open to boys of wide variety of religious traditions, with learning underpinned by the Columban code of Courage, Courtesy and Compassion. While striving for academic excellence the College realises that it is whole-person education that best prepares boys for the world, recognising that moral and spiritual qualities are essential in achieving roundness of character. In addition to the curriculum, there is an extensive Extra and Extended Curriculum ranging from the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Combined Cadet Force to Young Enterprise. These activities develop qualities of selfknowledge, teamwork, leadership and resilience. The College regularly wins trophies for rugby, athletics, basketball and other sports. There is a strong tradition of music, drama and public speaking with regular concerts and drama productions. Debating is very strong and, in February, the College again won the county final of the ESU Mace.

The school’s strength lies in the combination of high expectations, a culture of mutual respect and care, creating a stimulating happy environment in which boys thrive and learn, building firm foundations for confident socially-skilled pupils. The community is vibrant and the students are the best evidence of what a Columban education can produce. Most of the Prep boys progress naturally to the Senior School. Academic performance is good, with boys winning scholarships every year; all are challenged from the earliest stages to ‘achieve their own best standard’. There is a high teacher to pupil ratio, and teaching assistants help throughout the school. The College is proud of its strong reputation for pastoral care and both the Prep and Senior Schools have a well-developed house system, forging positive relationships and encouraging healthy competition. Browse the website and book an individual tour of the College with one of the boys: www.stcolumbascollege.org

The Million Home LONDON HOUSE SET TO BECOME UK’S MOST EXPENSIVE PROPERTY

T

he six-storey Grade I listed Regency mansion boasts 50,000 sq ft of living space, nearly as large as a whole football pitch, making it one of the capital’s largest private homes. With a view of St. James’ Park and within walking distance of Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus. It is situated off The Mall, and is one of the most exclusive streets in London with few residential properties.

Reports have suggested that a ‘strictly confidential’ brochure, which describes 18 Carlton House Terrace as ‘probably the finest residence in London’ has been circulating among the super-wealthy. The property is registered in the British Virgin Islands, and said to be owned by a member of the Saudi Royal family. The secret brochure apparently shows interior photographs which were taken in the 1890s, because the current owner does not want to advertise the contents of his home for security reasons. Details on the interior are sketchy, but there is believed to be a magnificent double staircase and a huge ballroom. According to reports, the house has four storeys above ground and two below, that could be converted into a spa, cinema, and swimming area. The owner has reportedly spent millions restoring the town house to its former glory. Property expert Henry Pryor, who pointed out that the ‘nearest corner shop will be Fortnum & Mason’, said: ‘I think it will almost certainly be bought by a foreign buyer.’ The property is 1,537 times more expensive than the average house sold last month in the UK, which was worth £162,606. At the asking price, the buyer will face a £17.5million bill for stamp duty. Despite the shaky economic recovery, 2012 was a record year for sales in London worth more than £5million, according to research by estate agent Savills. Last year, more than 400 properties were sold over that threshold, up from 350 in 2011. With so many properties now fetching nine-figure sums, oligarchs might be tempted to move to Kensington’s Egerton Crescent, Britain’s priciest street - where they can pick up a bargain with the average house costing just £8million. If 18 Carlton House Terrace reaches its £250million asking price, it will be the UK’s most expensive home - but it is not the only super-pricey property to reach the market in the past year. Last autumn, a huge house at Rutland Gate overlooking Hyde Park was put on sale for £300million, although its price was slashed when it failed to find a buyer. Around the same time, 1 Cornwall Terrace, opposite Regent’s Park, was advertised for £100million, which estate agents said was the highest price ever asked for a terraced house. Outside Central London, Heath Hall in Hampstead was also marketed at £100million - which later had to be lowered to £65million. Cambridge House on Piccadilly, formerly home to the In and Out Club, is currently being renovated and could fetch more than £200million when it is sold. The previous record for a London sale is £136 million paid for a property at One Hyde Park in Knightsbridge.

T

he historic Scotland yard building will take a new look as Londonbased developer, the Galliard Group together with the Crown Estate is all set to convert the building into either Mercer London or Chateau Marmont London, or an equivalent ‘Hollywood-level’ brand. Spread over 92,000 sq ft, the 235-bedroom hotel will open in 2016 and will boast of the capital’s most luxurious and expensive VIP suites, available for £10,000 a night. The new hotel will be located in a quiet and tranquil street with London’s most famous landmarks including Trafalgar Square, 10 Downing Street, the Mall and Buckingham Palace in close proximity. The Galliard Group have already acquired a 125-year lease on the building. Starting this month, the next 26 months will see construction in progress – costing over £50 million. Key features at the new hotel will include a grand entrance foyer, winter garden lounge, signature restaurant, cocktail bar and lounge, and a 120-seat main conference room. The new development will see the building extended with two new levels of basement and two new floors above the existing roof top. While the Imperial red brick and stone façade of the building will be retained, inside the building will be fitted with bespoke specification and state-of-theart technology, entertainment systems and security systems. The adjoining Edwardian office building at 1, Great Scotland Yard will be incorporated into the new hotel, with the space being used to create a VIP suite. Arranged over several floors, the suite will include a VIP bedroom suite on its own private floor complete with walk-in dressing rooms, day room and a spastyle main bathroom with living room, media room and other entertaining on other levels – making it one of the most luxurious and expensive hotel suites in central London. Stephen Conway, chief executive of Galliard Group said: ‘Our vision is to create one of London’s most outstanding 5-star hotels. It really is a blue-chip building with grand architecture, a fascinating history and large dramatic interiors.’The street is quiet and tranquil yet on the doorstep of London’s most

famous landmarks including Trafalgar Square, 10 Downing Street, the Mall and Buckingham Palace.’ Rich in history, the building at 3-5 Great Scotland began life as an Embassystyle dwelling for the Kings of Scotland when they visited King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I at the neighboring Whitehall Palace. In 1829, Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel selected Great Scotland Yard as the headquarters of the newly founded Metropolitan Police force. It was where investigations into the likes of Jack The Ripper were centred, and featured in the novels of Charles Dickens and Arthur Conan Doyle. The building’s main entrance was at 4 Whitehall Place, but a public office was installed to the rear at 3-5 Great Scotland Yard, giving the headquarters their famous name. And in 1910, the current Edwardian building was constructed on the site and served as the British Army Recruitment Office and Royal Military Police headquarters. Further in 1982, a refurbishment introduced a new atrium and the building later became the Ministry of Defence Library until 2004. The Galliard Group are currently in talks with leading top hotel operators to create ‘the perfect luxury destination hotel’ at the address. The Galliard Group of Companies Founded in 1992 and with over 700 staff, Galliard is a property development, hospitality and management group overseeing mixed-use, residential, hotel and commercial projects across London and southern England with a £1.3 billion portfolio of over 5,900 homes, hotels, retail premises and commercial properties. In addition to 3-5 Great Scotland Yard, Galliard is currently undertaking three other hotel projects in London in Canary Wharf, Greenwich and Deptford providing a total of 284 bedrooms. Recent outstanding examples of Galliard hotel projects include the re-development of the 68 room/suite St James’s Club & Hotel, now one of Mayfair’s finest boutique hotels; the creation of the new 398 bed Park Plaza Hotel at County Hall and the re-development of the Grade II-Listed Jacobean Harte & Garter Hotel and Spa near Windsor Castle.

BEAUTY DETOX Face refresh Take a breather from your cosmetics bag and give your complexion a detox by going au naturel for a few days over the festive break. “When you are planning to detox your skin, you must begin by resting it,” says skin therapist, Nataliya Robinson. “We are all guilty of overusing skin care products, including make-up, which is full of chemicals and irritants.” Even minus make-up, the daily grind can cause a build-up of pollution and bacteria so seek out a killer clarifying cleanser that purifies the skin and gently exfoliates. Robinson recommends going back to basics: “To truly detox the skin, put away all of your commercial creams and serums and turn toward organic natural ingredients such as banana, avocado and yoghurt for a weekend, or longer if you can.”

Who wants a hottie tummy? Do you have stubborn pockets of fat that just won’t disappear no matter how hard you exercise or diet? If so, the VASER Lipo may well be for you.

W

ith the likes of TOWIE’s Maria Fowler, and several other celebrities all benefiting from the amazing results of VASER Lipo, Dr Jain’s high definition body contouring practice is growing from strength to strength!

VASER Lipo uses revolutionary new ultrasound technology which removes stubborn pockets of fat resistant to diet and exercise. The procedure has been hailed as ‘six pack surgery’ as it is even possible to reveal your hidden six pack with this revolutionary form of liposuction. Dr Jain will not only get you looking fit, you’ll look younger, more energetic and in one word, fantastic. You’ll want to use that new body of yours. With no hospital stay, little bruising and minimal incisions VASER Lipo is the answer. RESHAPE YOUR BODY AND INVIGORATE YOUR LIFE Traditional liposuction is like sculpting with a shop vac. Everything gets sucked and chipped away without any detail. VASER 4D liposculpture is like taking a fine chisel and tapering each and every curve; every angle is perfect and muscular. ITS NOT JUST LIPOSUCTION. ITS VASER 4D SCULPT. VASER 4D Liposculpture is a revolution to the cosmetic surgery industry. At its inception, liposuction was designed just to remove fat. Liposculpture is a whole new way of looking and designing the anatomy so that it fits you and your lifestyle like your body should. With the VASER technology, Dr Ravi Jain removes extra fat and tightens your skin around the new curves and muscles. He leaves certain deposits of fat to accentuate your muscles while removing others to create dips and valleys around them. He sculpts your body into the ultimate harmony of art and science, talent and medicine WHO CAN HAVE VASER 4D? The VASER 4D procedure is meant for people who are already in good physical shape but have trouble achieving a defined ,athletic physique. Both 5 2 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4

men & women can be treated. VASER 4D is not mean for people who are very overweight or obese. The procedure depends heavily on skin retraction to help define the anatomical results. For people who are overly heavy, the skin has stretch beyond where VASER could help it retract. Please ask Dr Ravi Jain what other cosmetic options you may have if this describes you. HOW DOES VASER WORK? VASER is an advanced medical ultrasound technology (VASER stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance). During surgery, the VASER probe emits sound energy that literally liquefies fat tissue before it is gently suctioned away. In traditional liposuction, the fat is just sucked away - taking blood vessels, nerves and important connective tissue with it - resulting in severe pain, a longer recovery and mediocre results. With VASER, the liquid fat is easier to suction away, far gentler on the body and can be sculpted to enhance muscle appearance. CAN YOU SAY “CONFIDENCE BOOST” ? Just imagine how you would feel without any extra fat, keeping you from your own carefree lifestyle. No more worrying about how that bikini will fit, or swimming with a T-shirt on. No more crash diets/ No more staring in the mirror, wishing you were slimmer. Areas commonly treated: Double Chin & Jowls Bingo Wings (Upper arms) Saddle Bags / Love handles Upper / lower abdomen Inner / outer thighs

& TREATMENT FOR VARICOSE VEINS

H E A LT H & B E AU T Y

h ealt h beau ty

LEADING CONSULTANT VASCULAR SURGEON MICHAEL GAUNT OPENS A NEW PRACTICE AT THE LONDON CLINIC IN HARLEY STREET AND DISCUSSES THE TREATMENT OF VARICOSE AND THREAD VEINS… WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS? Varicose veins are a common problem affecting at least 20% of the adult population in the UK. ey occur when small valves inside the veins stop functioning correctly. Rather than blood flowing effortlessly back towards the heart, the blood stagnates within the veins causing aching,

Michael Gaunt tiredness and discomfort. At first, problem veins may not be visible but symptoms occur. Sometimes patches of blue thread veins may be the earliest signs of an underlying problem. Eventually, the abnormal veins may become swollen, enlarged and varicose. is condition can be embarrassing and painful. Varicose veins are usually blue or dark purple in colour and may also be lumpy or twisted in appearance. While any vein can be affected, varicose veins most commonly develop in the legs and feet – predominantly because standing and walking can put pressure on the veins in the lower body. WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER HAVING THEM TREATED? In the developing stages, varicose veins and thread veins may be primarily a cosmetic problem. However, if ignored, the condition can deteriorate and a variety of complications can occur such as leg swelling, pigmentation of the skin around the ankles and ulcers. Occasionally, veins can burst causing bleeding, or the blood within the veins can clot leading to the painful condition of phlebitis or even deep vein thrombosis. People who use air travel for work or holidays may be at increased risk particularly if those flights are long haul. IS THIS TREATMENT JUST FOR WOMEN? Certainly not, it can affect men just as much as it can affect women. Men tend to cover their legs up more, so the problem may be hidden away and ignored, with some men only seeking treatment when their veins become swollen and complications start to occur. It is important to target varicose veins before they become a problem, as without medical treatment some conditions may worsen. WHAT IS INVOLVED IN TREATMENT AND IS IT PAINFUL? Fortunately, modern, minimally invasive treatments can often be MR BYE 2R021041 3 5 348 J D A ENCUEA

performed under local anaesthetic as a walk-in, walk-out procedure. is leaves the patient with minimal postoperative pain with practically immediate return to normal activity. Michael Gaunt is a leading venous expert and has extensive knowledge of these procedures, having treated over 4,000 patients with the Endovenous Laser and ClariVein techniques. Both techniques are associated with considerably less pain, bruising and scarring than traditional stripping techniques. IS IT PERMANENT? Most modern techniques for treating varicose veins are associated with very good, long-term results. Patients are benefiting more and more from the advances in the treatments and the new procedures that are now available. HOW CAN I GET MY THREAD VEINS TREATED? Not all visible veins in the legs are varicose veins. Small veins underneath the skin, known as thread veins, spider veins or reticular veins, may become prominent due to a variety of different reasons. ey can cause symptoms of discomfort, itching and irritation as well as being unsightly. Often the appearance of thread veins is due to the effect of daily wear and tear on delicate skin and local treatments are effective. However, sometimes thread veins are an indication of underlying varicose veins which may not be visible on examination. Treatment of the thread veins will not be successful unless the underlying problem - for example the varicose veins - has been corrected first. erefore, a thorough venous assessment is necessary before initiating any local treatment for thread veins. is could include injection microsclerotherapy or VeinWave therapy. Once underlying varicose veins have been treated or excluded, local treatment of the thread veins is much more likely to be successful. VeinWave therapy is also very effective at removing unsightly facial red veins affecting the nose and cheeks. ONCE I’VE DECIDED TO HAVE TREATMENT, WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP? Make an appointment where we can assess your condition and discuss potential treatment and steps forward. ese no obligation consultations are offered at e London Clinic in Harley Street. If you would like to book a mini-consultation, including an ultrasound scan, for just £95, or if you would like to find out more about your treatment options call 01223 305858 or visit www.michaelgaunt.com ■

ad hair days are one thing, but add a bad face day to the mix and you’ve probably got an almighty hangover on your hands...

‘Tis the season to be merry, and you don’t have to be especially badly behaved for the party season to take its toll on your skin. The odd late night here, one too many cocktails there, and your complexion can end up looking like it’s been through the festive ringer. Thankfully, beauty saviours are available to provide some emergency relief the morning-after-the-night-before. When party hangovers strike, follow these tricks to camouflage the evidence. If one too many tipples means you forget the pillow plumping, invest in a de-puffing eye cream for a morning miracle. “Look for one that deals with dark under-eye circles,” Zander suggests. “For bloodshot eyes, prepare two camomile teabags wet and refrigerated, or have a trusty chilled teaspoon on standby. When you wake up, hit the snooze button for five minutes and let these quick-fixes de-puff your telltale party baggage.” For those not familiar with the refrigerated teabag or spoon methods, simply lie back and pop the bags onto closed eyelids, or hold the rounded side of the spoon gently over the area, and let them work their magic. Detox your way into 2014

TOP

10 DETOX FOODS

Over-indulging on food and alcohol together with late nights over Christmas and New Year, can make you feel bloated, tired, or perhaps you have even put on a pound or two.

Here is our guide to eating the right foods and restore your healthy wellbeing... Lemon Lemons are a staple of many detox diets, and there is good reason for this. Firstly, lemons are packed with antioxidant vitamin C, which is great for the skin and for fighting disease-forming free-radicals. Furthermore, the citrus fruit has an alkaline effect on the body, meaning that it can help restore the body’s pH balance, benefitting the immune system. Try starting your day with hot water and a slice of lemon to help flush out toxins and cleanse your system.

6 0 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4

Ginger If too much fatty food or alcohol has caused problems for your digestive system, it may be worthwhile adding some ginger to your diet. Ginger is not only great for reducing feelings of nausea, but it can help improve digestion, beat bloating and reduce gas. In addition to this, ginger is high in antioxidants and is good for boosting the immune system. To give your digestion a helping hand, try sipping on ginger tea or adding some freshly grated ginger to a fruit or vegetable juice.

H E A LT H & B E AU T Y

Garlic Garlic has long been known for its heart benefits, however the pungent food is also good at detoxifying the body. Garlic is not only antiviral, antibacterial and antibiotic, but it contains a chemical called allicin which promotes the production of white blood cells and helps fight against toxins. Garlic is best eaten raw, so add some crushed garlic to a salad dressing to boost its flavour and your health at the same time.

Cabbage Many celebs have resorted to the cabbage soup diet to help lose weight and get in shape quickly before a big event, however cabbage is not only good for weight loss - it is also an excellent detoxifying food. Like most cruciferous vegetables (including broccoli and sprouts), cabbage contains a chemical called sulforaphane, which helps the body fight against toxins. Cabbage also supplies the body with glutathione; an antioxidant that helps improve the detoxifying function of the liver.

Artichoke If you have recently been overindulging in fatty foods and alcohol, adding some steamed globe artichoke leaves to your meals is a great way to help get your body back on track. Globe artichokes are packed with antioxidants and fibre and can also help the body digest fatty foods. On top of this, globe artichoke is renowned for its ability to stimulate and improve the functions of the liver - the body’s main toxin-fighting tool.

Fresh fruit Fresh fruits are high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre= and are also low in calories, making them an important part of a detox diet. If you’re after brighter eyes and skin, shinier hair and improved digestion, try boosting your intake of fruit and eating from a wide variety of different kinds. The good news is fruit is easy to add to your diet, so try starting your day with a fresh fruit salad or smoothie and snacking on pieces of fruit throughout the day.

Beetroot For those needing a quick health-boosting shot of nutrients, you can’t do much better than beetroot. Packed with magnesium, iron, and vitamin C, the vegetable has recently been hailed as a superfood due to its many reported health benefits. Not only is beetroot great for skin, hair and cholesterol levels, but it can also help support liver detoxification, making it an ultimate detox food. To enjoy its benefits, try adding raw beetroot to salads or sipping on some beetroot juice.

Brown rice If you want to cleanse your system and boost your health, it is a good idea to cut down on processed foods. Instead, try supplementing your diet with healthier whole grains such as brown rice, which is rich in many key detoxifying nutrients including B vitamins, magnesium, manganese and phosphorous. Brown rice is also high in fibre, which is good for cleansing the colon, and rich in selenium, which can help to protect the liver as well as improving the complexion.

Green tea While it’s not technically a food, no detox plan would be complete without regular consumption of essential liquids. Fluids are essential for keeping our organs healthy and helping to flush toxins from the body, and drinking green tea is a great way of boosting your intake. Green tea is not only a good weight-loss drink, but it is extremely high in antioxidants. Research has also suggested that drinking green tea can protect the liver from diseases including fatty liver disease.

Watercress Like most green herbs and vegetables, watercress is an excellent health-booster and detox food. Firstly, watercress leaves are packed with many vital detoxifying nutrients, including several B vitamins, zinc, potassium, vitamin E and vitamin C. Secondly, watercress has natural diuretic properties, which can help to flush toxins out the body. To reap the benefits of this nutritious food, try adding a handful of watercress to salads, soups and sandwiches.

Who needs mascara? W

e have always tried to look our best; using the latest makeup, special face creams, masks and serums. However, when you reach a certain age you start to consider more drastic action to reduce the signs of ageing slowly appearing on your face. Boxtox and Restlyane start to appear tempting despite the horror stories (and faces) of those who have taken it that bit too far. But what’s the alternative? Well we are going to let you in on a secret: eyelash extensions. No, not the Cheryl Cole-esque strips or those individual lashes you can buy in the pharmacy. These are single strands of pre curled synthetic fibre which are applied one at a time to your own natural lashes, adding length but, more importantly, volume and curl. Suddenly lashes that were starting to appear short, stumpy and dull are transformed into beautifully defined, thickened, darkened and curled lashes that look like the most perfectly applied mascara, only better. The finished result can literally knock years off your look with the whole eye area appearing lifted and more youthful. The need for heavy liner or large amounts of eyeshadow is gone, giving a cleaner and more elegant finish. And the best bit? Flutter provides a professional, salon quality mobile service so you can enjoy the relaxing application process in the comfort of your own home. Your Flutter lash artist will carry out a full consultation with you before they commence treatment, to determine the look you want to create, whether that’s super natural or a little more glam. The highly trained team use unique techniques and systems to apply the extensions, enabling them to be worn on a continuous basis without causing any damage to the natural lashes. They just require top up appointments every 3-4 weeks to keep them looking thick and full.

So before you resort to those scary injections, throw your mascara away and call Flutter today to book our mobile service. 01372 386312 or book online at www.fluttereyes.co.uk

Why ‘Live-in care’ may be... ...the alternative to a nursing home What is Live-in care?

Selecting the right Live-in care provider for you

For many people considering residential care for themselves or their loved ones, Live-in care may provide a better alternative. Live-in care supports people with wide ranging needs to stay independent in the comfort of their own home. It works by providing a trained ‘Personal Assistant’ (PA) who lives with them 24/7, supporting their everyday life.

Making sure the provider of Live-in care shares the same values and principles as you is critical. At Each Life, our value statement and code of conduct is clearly displayed on our web site.

Each Life was set up by two experienced clinicians, Anne Thain (a former senior nurse with 30 years of experience) and Dr Tony Felton, (a general practitioner) who have a combined passion to provide high quality care for clients in their own home and encouraging them to live the lives they choose rather than one dictated by others. Clients who choose Live-in care have needs that range from straightforward ‘companionship’ to more complex support.

How will Live-in care meet my needs? For many clients, especially those who are older but want to remain independent, Companionship services usually include shopping, meal preparation, housework and support for social activities. For clients with greater needs, PA’s can provide support for personal hygiene and dressing. In more complex cases, for example, clients with specific illness or neurological impairment, their PA works alongside healthcare professionals to support rehabilitation and helps the client to regain independence. We know that supporting quality of life for the whole family, including family members who may live some distance from the client, is key to the success of Live-in care. Each Life services span all age ranges, from children to the elderly, and cover a wide geography across London and the South East. In Each Life, all our PA’s are selected, trained and managed by a former senior nurse. This process starts with a meeting with the client to gain an understanding of their lifestyle needs and objectives. From there, a more formal assessment is undertaken and summarised in a ‘personal lifestyle plan’ which is used to select the PA. 6 4 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4

Most clients who use Live-in care require some sort of ‘hands on’ support, which falls under the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) regulatory framework. Reputable providers like Each Life will be registered with the CQC, which you can check on their web site (www.cqc.org.uk). You should have some choice over selecting your PA. At Each Life, you will be directly involved in the selection of your PA. Reputable providers should also provide PA’s with comprehensive induction and training programmes before they can be deemed competent.

How much does Live-in care cost? Live-in care is generally less expensive than most nursing homes, with costs starting from £600 per week. Many of our clients fund their care directly, however other sources of funding that you might be eligible for may come from Local Authorities or NHS. Most clients are also entitled to an Attendance Allowance.

Making sure it’s right for you You need to be 100% confident that you understand the financial arrangements for your Live-in care before signing any contract. This includes a clear understanding of who employs your PA, agreeing rates for work, set up fees and on-going management fees. Each Life is run by Anne Thain, a former senior nurse with decades of experience in delivering support to clients in their home. Anne would be happy to discuss your circumstances to see whether our services may work for you. Please call Anne on 07971 499411/02081 236286 or e-mail: athain@eachlife.co.uk

he new home, which replaces an existing home has been designed with respect for it’s surroundings. The new design steps down with the fall of the site and uses the level change in conjunction with the modularisation of the house to create intimate internal areas which echo the topographical context of the site. The design by Nicolas Tye Architects features white render, timber louvres and elegant glazing systems that encourage to blur the division between inside and out. Careful consideration was given to the choice of construction materials, using locally sourced materials, the architects also went as far as specifying natural paints and stains, both internally and externally. In keeping with it’s design philosophy, heat pumps, rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling systems were also specified to provide an energy efficient and environmentally friendly scheme. This exquisite building of high quality design and architecture has been created to form a fresh, modern single dwelling what respects the nature of the area and brings a coherent layout integrated with the site while presenting a modern yet timeless design concept.

Restoring Architectual Beauty with The Classic Cornice Company

MOULDINGS REMOVING THE

O

ur showroom is based in Wandsworth, South West London. We have been established for over 40 years and our nationwide client base has grown due to our skilled and professional service. With a wealth of knowledge and over forty years of experience, we provide quality work for all our customers.

We cater for homeowners, builders and architects. We are committed to the restoration and preservation of architectural features, combining traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques and materials to reproduce original features such as cornices, ceiling centres and corbels in precise detail and to an exceptionally high quality. Robert Adam, the 18th century designer and Architect, introduced cornice, Fibrous plasterwork or ornate mouldings into Great Britain. He incorporated into his ceiling decorations, plaster reliefs. He would then repeat these motifs in the furnishings, carpets and woodwork. The plaster reliefs formed no function except to embellish and beautify. Much the same as they do, today. There is an immense amount of ornate plasterwork in Great Britain in many different styles, from the finest town and country houses to 19th century railway cottages in Waterloo. London. Over the passage of time the ornate plaster mouldings has been destroyed, damaged, heavily painted or just ripped out because it became unfashionable. Our extensive knowledge and empathy with various eras of interior decor enables us to match any classical feature with great accuracy. We take pride in the competitive prices we offer so you can rely on us to restore your property cleanly and efficiently. Interior Mouldings Broseley London and the Classic Cornice Co. have collaborated on many projects over the last 30 years. Their project in Earls Court Sq. was both challenging and rewarding.

PART OF THE NEW CEILING

The ceiling in the main reception needed to be replaced, which meant that all the original ornate mouldings, would need to be replaced. The mouldings were removed and catalogued. Taken into the workshop to be cleaned, reproduced and then returned to the house to be installed. The result was a stunning ceiling, restored to its former glory. Exterior mouldings As the Company has grown we have been asked if the expertise we bring to the internal mouldings can be transferred to the exterior. With the introduction of a product called Jesmonite, a resin-bonded cement with have been able to adapt our skills and knowledge to produce high quality finishes to exteriors. The Advantage Basement Co. commissioned us to reproduce the external mouldings to the façade of the property in Richmond (below) to match the external mouldings next door. The Richmond Society’s top award of a brass plaque was presented for the transformation of this property in Richmond. They said, ‘The replacement of a 1950s semi, which itself was an infill resulting from bombing during the Second War, with a carefully designed reconstruction of a 19th century villa, completely in keeping with the existing historic townscape and being of the highest build quality. The judging panel had been particularly impressed with the care and consideration taken to reproduce the character and detail of the neighbouring villa.’ The Richmond Society Quarterly Newsletter, Winter 2013. Our company offers a full range of expertise from manufacturing the ornate plasterwork to the installation both externally and internally. What does the future hold for divorcing couples? One of the questions most frequently asked of family lawyers by clients facing separation or divorce is “What am I entitled to?” The answer to this question will depend entirely on the particular circumstances of the case. Sue Woods, a Family Lawyer at Taylor Walton solicitors looks at how finances are resolved upon the breakdown of a marriage.

W

hen considering how the assets should be divided, there is a general principle of equality. However, in many cases, to divide the assets equally would produce an unfair or totally impractical result. Following a full consideration of all the circumstances, in most cases it will be necessary to depart from equality and for the assets to be divided in some other way. The factors to be considered are:-

to run two households than one. Where there has been a very comfortable standard of living, needs will be assessed more generously than in cases where the parties have always had to manage on a tight budget.

What are the resources available to the parties both in terms of income and assets? All types of assets and income can be taken into account including potential future assets such as inheritances. Inheritances will often be regarded differently to other assets even where the inheritance has already been received. Likewise, assets acquired before the marriage or after the parties separate can be treated differently to those acquired during their relationship. How such assets are treated will depend on the circumstances of the case and, in particular, the parties’ needs.

What contributions have each of the parties made? Exceptional contributions may affect the way the assets are divided. There are different types of contribution and the main breadwinner will not be considered to have made a greater contribution than the party remaining at home to look after the children.

What are the parties’ needs, responsibilities and liabilities? These will vary from one family to another. Although we all have the same basic need for food, clothing and shelter, what is considered reasonable will vary from case to case depending on the standard of living enjoyed during the marriage and the resources available. The children’s main carer will arguably have a more pressing housing need. If one party has remarried or is with a new partner, this new relationship might impose additional responsibilities or alternatively provide more available resources. The age of the parties and the length of the marriage. These factors can have an important bearing on the terms of any settlement. In the case of young spouses, particularly if there are no children involved, a clean break is likely to be appropriate with each party going their separate ways. On the other hand, in the case of a long marriage, a party who has effectively given up their career to look after the children cannot necessarily be expected to immediately go out to work and support themselves. The length of the marriage will be less significant where there are children of the marriage as they will represent a continuing responsibility. The standard of living during the marriage In most cases it will not be possible for the standard of living enjoyed during the marriage to be sustained after separation, it being far more expensive

Any physical or mental disability of either party This will be a factor insofar as a disability has a bearing on earning capacity, needs or life expectancy.

Is conduct taken into account? In most cases conduct or behaviour will not be taken into account and will only be relevant if it is exceptional or has had a direct effect on the resources available, particularly if one party has spent excessively or deliberately disposed of assets in an attempt to defeat the other party’s financial claims. Financial misconduct, including failure to disclose assets within court proceedings, is more likely to be taken into account than matrimonial misconduct e.g. adultery. Will loss of benefits be considered? If either party is likely to lose any benefit, for example pension entitlement, as a result of the dissolution of the marriage, this loss of benefits is a factor that should be taken into account when considering terms of settlement. In addition to these factors, recent case law has put an added “gloss” on how Judges apply the law, to take into account the principles of “compensation” and “sharing”. However, what the law is trying to achieve in every case is a result that is fair, reasonable and practical, with the needs of any children being the first consideration. At the end of the day, the majority of cases will be driven by needs and practicalities. Taylor Walton’s Family Law team is recommended as a leading practice for Beds., Bucks., Herts. & Middlesex by The Legal 500, an independent directory identifying the UK’s best law firms. If you would like further information relating to this article, or require advice on your own particular circumstances, please contact Sue Woods on 01582 765111 or email sue.woods@taylorwalton.co.uk
