Art Sushi has become remarkably busy due to their loyal and frequent customers. Throughout lockdown. owner Kamil Skalczynski had time to fully indulge in the thoughts about his restaurant and how it would all appear in-person and not through screens. A warm family environment gave him a lot of motivation and love. This is really what was his fuel and sense: Family! Kamil found the perfect location and claimed it once the lockdown restrictions had been discarded. The Art Sushi restaurant was up-andrunning in May 2021. The interior of the restaurant contains natural, hand-made oak features and soft glow coming from the lighting which softly illuminates the Japanese inspired paintings, mirroring the Japanese culture, and giving the restaurant a soft and calming atmosphere You can just feel the soul there and the environment is with a touch of the family hearth and love on which it was founded.

Christmas at Russell-Cotes Art Gallery

Step back in time and discover the magic of a traditional Victorian Christmas at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum in Bournemouth.

It was the Victorians that made Christmas into the festival we celebrate today. A time when Christmas reigned supreme when families came together to feast, exchange presents, sing carols and play games. The Victorians also invented many of the seasons’ most popular accompaniments, including Christmas cake, Christmas cards and Christmas crackers. So, what better way to celebrate the season than a visit to the Victorian Villa that is the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum in Bournemouth.

At the Russell-Cotes this winter the halls of the historic house are decked with boughs of holly and other truly Victorian decorative delights. Visitors can follow the self-led Christmas Tour and find out more about Christmas traditions and collection items linked to this magical time of the year. There’s also a special nutcracker trail for families to enjoy.

Those heading to the museum to see the decorations can treat themselves in the café or spoil someone special by pre-booking a festively delicious Christmas Afternoon Tea. With includes festive sandwich fillings, Christmassy cakes and an option with mulled wine!

The Coastal BID will be adding extra sparkle to your Christmas by lighting up the streets with magical, bespoke illuminations, complimented by a programme of entertainment every advent Saturday in December in Westbourne.

Get into the festive spirit with a host of musical performances including everything from carolling choirs, to singalongs by the Christmas Tree. Listen to the beautiful sound of cellists and everything from folk music to Barber Quartets, there’ll be plenty of music to get in the mood for the season every Saturday from 10:30am.

Join the wonderful Debra Stephenson (of Coronation Street and Bad Girl fame) at our Christmas Tree light switch on the 3rd December beside Marks and Spencer Westbourne at 4:30pm. Debra will be accompanied by live singing including some familiar songs from ‘The Sounds of Soul!’ We always encourage audience participation and would love you to join in!

Westbourne will be a feast for the senses this Christmas with plenty of traditional Christmas fayre to tempt you in the many varied independent eateries dotted around the area.

He gained experience in well-known Restaurants in Poland. He had an Internship In Atelier Amaro, A One Michelin Star and also worked there with the Best Chefs. As a 16-year-old young man, Kamil felt a strong passion for cooking and started to build up towards his career, working in the best sushi bars and restaurants across Poland. Following this, he attended university, studying marketing and management in hospitality. As his career rapidly developed, Kamil took notice of people’s love and attention towards sushi and the Japanese cuisine which led him to be able to open restaurants in regard of others, which have developed and became successful up till today. Eventually, he managed to open his own sushi bar with the involvement of his business partners.

Having all these achievements, he has realised that there was something missing in his life. His family. In that time his family was living in the UK, and he flew over and visited them for Christmas. This then became a turning point for Kamil as he wanted to be close with those he genuinely loves and it really gives him strength and faith in his craft. He sold his

flat in Poland, plus a share in his business and bought a one-way plane ticket to the UK, thus starting a new life. Having a large language barrier, his interactions were limited with the citizens of our country. He was not expecting to succeed much, but felt confident with his decisions, even though if it would mean starting from square one. Knowing his stubborn nature, he already had a plan put in place in his mind. Firstly, he worked for local restaurants, taking over as a sushi chef. As he gained courage and confidence, he was determined to make his destiny come to life. Building and operating his own restaurant. Starting off by working at Hilton Hotel, Bournemouth as a breakfast chef, getting up at 4 in the morning was required to be able to make a living and to conserve time to focus on developing his own business in the evenings. Soon after starting to cooperate with Hilton Hotel, Kamil began to regularly manage popup sushi nights in ‘tonic social.’ Ever since, the move to the UK with his busy schedule, working in Hilton he offered private functions and worked from home as a takeaway sushi option. Following lockdown was put in place, meaning that Kamil had no other choice but to stay at home with his beloved partner and two children to continue working fulltime from home. 7+ and 8+: The Correct Way to Prepare

On entering reception classes, parents focus – quite rightly so – on settling their son or daughter in at big school. Transitioning from Nursery to a potentially more structured environment continues to stimulate the children superbly well and tire them out!

As time passes and parents begin to talk to their friends and other parents in the year group, the terms 7+ and 8+ begin to emerge. What does this mean? Some schools (for example Westminster Under, St Paul’s, Kings, Latymer and Sussex House, to name but a few) run admission assessments at 7+ (Year 2) and 8+ (Year 3) for their schools. These are the earliest entry points for these schools.

Some have a larger intake at 7+ than 8+. Some don’t have an intake at 7+, but do at 8+, and vice versa. But what they have in common is the assessment of your son’s performance across English, reasoning and maths. They will also all review how he works with others, who he is as a person via an interview, and what potential does he have. One major question they will ask is, ‘Will he thrive at our school?’

Preparation for 7+ and 8+ should begin the day they walk through the Pre-Prep’s door. A school should not just be preparing for these exams, commonly called hot housing. Children can be hot housed, but are the knowledge and skills embedded? Are the foundations solid or built on sand? At Eaton House Belgravia, our whole educational philosophy is about providing the boys with an exceptional education that prepares them for life, and through this comprehensive approach, also prepares them for the 7+ and 8+ exams.

Two schools, Kings College Wimbledon and St Paul’s, run their 7+ process from the end of October in the first term of Year 2. The academic requirements are high. For many pupils, this will be the first time

they have been part of a process which can significantly affect their future, and most are only 6 years old. Making the decision for your child to sit the 7+, is one that cannot be taken lightly.

When embarking on a learning journey we look at how your son learns. Does he have a thirst for learning? In what areas does he have a natural interest? In what areas is he not so interested and why? Once we have established a picture of his learning habits, we can utilise this to formulate a plan to maximise learning potential.

Some boys are more organically mature and thrive on a rapid pace of learning. They are innately more inquisitive about all aspects of life and school, and how they can apply their knowledge and skills to their lives and learning. Some need guidance to build confidence in themselves and to take risks. Some are just not quite ready for 7+, but are able to learn at a pace that is appropriate for their age, solidly build on their ability to ensure future attainment and successfully sit entrance tests in the future. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach, as we have to be led by the maturity and ability of your son.

Academic preparation comes from a deeply considered curriculum that wraps itself around the pupils. This curriculum is completely reflective, ambitious and scaffolded to enable all to succeed. Question mastery, and the knowledge and skills to complete the challenges that are being posed, are essential if one is to be successful, especially when attempting the 7+ or 8+ entrance exams. Are the boys able to read, comprehend, process and apply the knowledge they have, to successfully answer the question? It sounds straightforward, but in children so young it is the most advanced skill they need to master to secure a place at 7+ or 8+. Regardless of whether your son is going for 7+ or 8+, at Eaton House Belgravia, question mastery is a skill that is taught to set children up for life, not just for exams.

Not every child is going to be ready

to sit an exam at 7+. One year’s growth, development, education, worldly experience, maturity, and the realisation that yes, it is down to me, not my parents or anyone else but me, can be transformational for a pupil. Having the desire and yearning to want to work hard, and to assimilate and drive their own learning forward, has an enormous impact on 7+ and 8+ outcomes.

This can empower him for entrance test success at an early age. For those who are not at that advanced developmental stage, the same level of encouragement, development, and personalised teaching continues. As we move into Winter, the mood this year is all about comfort. What we’re currently seeking from our homes is to feel calm, relaxed and cosy. They are our personal sanctuaries, designed for no one but those that live within them, and they’ve become spaces where we want to express our unique tastes, personalities and histories. The contemporary home says ‘come on in,’ ‘snuggle into this,’ ‘remember this?’ or ‘have a look at that.’

Combined with our ongoing love-affair with all things natural, the décor emerging for A/W 2022 is soothing, serene and simple, either touched by the organic or with the highly personal embedded into it. These interiors inspire peaceful nights in, thoughtful conversations, happy memories and the occasional wry smile. Here’s the Chapins’ edit of the best.

A natural embrace / green upholstery

As well as the colours and physical reminder of nature we are bringing into our homes this season, it’s also a representation of how all things natural make us feel. The welcoming embrace of the great outdoors is represented interiors-wise by sumptuous upholstery, tempting

textures and cosy sink-into-me cushions, which combined with verdant shades instantly switches the mind into unwinding mode. Sofas and chairs emulate nature in the simplest, clearest of ways, with grounded, unexaggerated tones touched by the forest spanning moss, sage, fern and firs. Their designs also nod to the bucolic, prompting memories of being outside while welcoming you into their cosy, calming arms to ponder the joys of it all.

The refreshed take on Arflex’s classic 1970-designed Marenco sofa by Mario Marenco has not only natural colouring, but its plump cushions channel the comforting envelopment that being immersed in greenery can bring. GamFratesi’s Beetle Chair in 3D Veneer, a new wood-wrapped take on the iconic shellshaped design, sees its rich velvet upholstery take on the characteristics of moss growing across timber. The organic-esque fabric on Giorgetti’s Montgomery chair by Dainelli Studio lures in the eye like a patterned plant, the grassy shade spreading from the seat onto the upper ash wood arms to extend the verdant feel, and simultaneously hard yet soft, Moroso’s Pebble Rubble sofa by Front is designed to emulate rain-polished rocks covered in a layer of overgrown plant life to represent nature’s slow, reassuring rhythm.

Line of sight / Linear pendant lights

As the nights draw in and the curtains close, it’s time to think about lighting. The designs shepherding us through these darker days are based around simplicity. Not exaggerated.

Not attention grabbing. Leading A/W 2022 are linear pendants made from elegant, slimline forms that range from the calligraphic, twisting and turning mid-air, to the steadfastly straightened. Such considered minimalism creates a soothing, easy-going space, one where the eye is pulled upward only momentarily and illumination appears as if from thin air.

Decidedly minimalist, the Oneline by artist Kasper Friis Kjeldgaard for Fritz Hansen is a sleek slash of brightness which rotates 360 degrees to cast light in any direction. Moooi’s Gravity Chandelier by Paul Cocksedge is composed of elegant flexible arms which fall naturally in flowing curves, the shapes defined by where its glass shades are positioned. A pair of ultra-delicate rings, Lodes’s Elara pendant by Nika Zupanc is an understated representation of astral motion, its loops silently interacting with and orbiting each other. A suspended arc, Cattelan Italia’s Nahun lamp by Studio Kronos feels almost typographical, as if drawn in the air with the sweep of a brush, the outer LED strip casting a diffused glow.

On display / Glass display cabinets

2022 is the time to break those much-loved mementoes and treasured trinkets out of hiding. As part of crafting a home imbued with meaning and personality, we’re ready to put ourselves on display with the bevy of newly launched glass-fronted storage pieces and curate our very own cabinets of curiosities. Transparent doors keep items safe and protected yet give them undeniable presence in the room, framing them and presenting collections to passers-by, declaring who you are and telling your story.

The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Audrey cabinet by Pocci&Dondoli for Bontempi is composed almost entirely of extratransparent glass, diverting all attention onto the objects placed within it. Gallotti&Radice’s Soda cabinet by Draga & Aurel adds to the display’s personality with its playful rounded shape and goldtoned glass, items on shelves interacting with its circular frame. ‘Like a small stage, rich in attention and details, Shibusa tells the story of personal passions’ confirms designer Mauro Lipparini, his cabinet an elegant combination of glass and ash.

A bigger splash / Textured glass

When there is no need for glass to be transparent, designers are taking the opportunity to make it decorative and experimental. Transporting us straight to the shores of the sea, the foot of a waterfall or the reflections in a pond, this there’s a new vogue for textured glass ¬– steeped once again in our desire to be close to nature. Embracing the hypnotic yet soothing traits of water, pieces of glass are rippled

and warped like sheets of water blown by the wind, expressions of deft craft skills as well as our collective need to bring the outside in. The surface of Cassina’s Esosoft table by Antonio Citterio feels like an angular slice of gentle river, its thick textured glass taking on the appearance of water softly brushed by a breeze. Bontempi’s aptly named H20 Coffee Table by Studio F+B Design forms a lonely puddle disturbed by undulating concentric rings, as if a stone has just been dropped into it, and Bonaldo’s blown glass Acquerelli Table Lamp by Marco Zito imitates a range of watery expressions, from icy frozen milk white to ripples full of intriguing movement.

Unexpected angles

Get your protractors out – angles are back. After years of yearning for circles, roundness and eschewing corners, sharpness and straight lines in the home, we’ve started to revolt. These aren’t your usual right-angled tables, it’s a whole lot more creative than that, with designers experimenting with balance, illusion and juxtaposition in materials soft and hard. Oh, and you can forget about the rules of gravity, too.

Cassina merges precision and comfort with its Flutz chair by Michael Anastassiades, its sharp parallel aluminium sides sheltering a soft seat within. Unsurprisingly, Bonaldo’s Pisa coffee tables by Mauro Lipparini lean diagonally to the side, balancing themselves with an off-kilter surface or standing thin and tower-like. Square by Jonathan Olivares for Moroso blurs the boundaries between soft and hard, forming cushioned right angles and perfect lines in precise upholstery, while with its new Abat-Jour shade throwing more geometry into the mix, Vitra’s Potence wall lamp by Jean Prouvé shoots sharply upward, mixing the aesthetic of a wall and pendant light. chaplins.co.uk

Bespoke, British staircasesdesigned and built in the UK

bespoke staircases, balustrades and other architectural features in timber, stone, metal, and glass. There is no standard, off-the-shelf option, each staircase is a ‘one-off’, designed, built and installed by the in-house team. All components are individually specified for each project, and where possible, sourced locally.

Set up by time-served blacksmith Richard McLane over 25 years ago Bisca has progressed from one man and his paper sketches to a design studio with the latest design technology, a traditional forge and cutting-edge machinery, employing a team of 21 people.

Stairs in many homes are nondescript and as long as they are functional, they attract little attention. But a staircase can be so much more, according to Richard McLane, Design Director at Bisca, who create bespoke staircases for residential and commercial properties across the UK.

“Commissioning a bespoke staircase enables you to create an original design to your brief. For a complicated project it is always best to consult a specialist in the field before building work begins. As well as offering expert knowledge on structural and building regulations a specialist will be involved in every process from design through build to installation. A unique staircase solution designed in empathy with the fabric of the building will always look better than a kit or modular staircase.”

Bisca designs and manufactures

One of the fundamentals of Bisca is the relationship between the workshop and the design studio.
