THE SALT PIG

The Salt Pig was established in 2010 by James Warren, opening our first premises in the market town of Wareham, Dorset. Having been a shepherd in his earlier years, James has always believed in provenance and the delivery of local food to the public. Having started the salt pig, growth began to snowball with the popularity of our deep pan veggie quiches and big and meaty sausage rolls.

James saw the market to deliver his key objective of supplying local meat to our customers. With lamb from Kimmeridge, supplied by Julian Cranton – to the white horned white park cows of Wytch Farm in Arne – 8 years ago James started breeding his own rare breed Mangalitsa and Berkshire Pigs at Arne Nature Reserve.

Bringing ‘Purbeck to your plate’ has always been at the forefront of James’ ethos. Not long after The Salt Pig opened, James began hog roasts for friends with Victor from The Smoke House in Church Knowle. Word soon got out about James’ famous hog roasts. By 2013 The Salt Pig was catering for events across Purbeck then expanding to the rest of Dorset.

The demand for more of The Salt Pig’s Purbeck cuisine hit the seaside town of Swanage in 2018 - The Salt Pig Too, was born. In 2021 we opened a horsebox in the forgotten village of Tyneham, supplying coffee, savoury snacks to visitors. OLD HARRY ROCKS WALK

START 1: From the car park walk down the road past the Bankes Arms pub and turn left by the public toilets on to the path signed for Old Harry. Look out for rectangular earthworks in the wood near Old Harry - the remains of fields used by Celtic farmers.

2: From Old Harry follow the coast path up a gentle rise, keeping well back from the sheer cliff edge.

3: At the first gate, keep to the cliff top path. There’s a good variety of chalk grassland flowers in the short turf, but you’ll need to go down on hands and knees to best enjoy them. Look back to enjoy a fine view of the Pinnacle stack.

4: Go through a farm gate and head straight on past earthworks and along Ballard Down.

5: Just before the stone bench marked ‘Rest and be thankful’, where the main paths cross, turn right down the hill towards Studland.

6: Follow the road down through the Glebeland estate.

7: Go straight on at the crossroads, following the sign for the church. On your right is the

village cross, which was erected in 1976. The carvings depict a range of images both ancient and modern.

END 8: At the end of the lane, go through the gate into the churchyard. Pass the church on your right then turn immediately right and follow the footpath back to your starting point.

Maserati comes to Dorset

Hendy Group has been appointed to handle one of the world’s most prestigious car brands with news that it is opening a Maserati showroom in Poole, Dorset.

Maserati designs its vehicles like works of art, constructing them with the care and attention that every Italian performance car deserves. The luxury brand of the Stellantis Group has appointed Hendy to manage sales and service work with the latter’s West Quay Road dealership in Poole set to be the heart of the new operation.

Due to open on Thursday 1st December, the new Maserati showroom will be home to the Trident brand’s range and Hendy chief executive Paul Hendy said the addition of the iconic marque to the group’s portfolio demonstrates Hendy’s strength and ambitions for the future.

“Maserati is synonymous with unique design, innovation, performance and passion and we look forward to being part of the brand’s future in the UK,” said Paul.

This exhibition showcases over three years of Michael’s ‘hold on to’ paintings. Paintings that he just couldn’t immediately sell and hung on his own wall for some time.

The exhibition is titled ‘From the silence of the mountains to the crashing of the sea’. It’s an old lyric from ‘Question’ a Moody Blues track back in the 70’s and it’s always touched a chord with Michael.

The exhibition will feature paintings inspired by the French Alps, Seascapes from the South of France and our own beautiful Sandbanks coastline.

More about me…

Having finished a three year degree from Wimbledon College of Art in Fine Art Painting, I stayed living in London for a further three years before moving to Poole in Dorset. I have built up an impressive following in the Capital due to exhibiting my paintings in all the Affordable Art Fairs and selling privately throughout the city. I’ve held my own pop-up shops in Clapham Common, Pall Mall and Notting Hill. I often bring a body of work to London to show interested clients.

I explore the natural world around me. I see painting as an intuitive process and I often spend months at a time observing my choice of subject matter before painting in order to bring the atmosphere of the landscape back into the studio and on to my canvases..

Nature is fascinating to me, especially in extreme circumstances, such as storms. I am particularly fascinated by the sea, and how it offers such an interesting base for experimentation with painting and paints. In painting I feel very strongly that energy must be met with energy. By this I mean big seas and a powerful subject matter benefits from energetic, physical and confident painting, which usually includes allowing the paint to have its own way without using a brush. Dripping, pouring, throwing, lifting, shaking and so on, all add to these involuntary effects. Through these processes and techniques I hope to capture the power and atmosphere of the environment that I have placed myself into.

I paint what gets my heart beating fast as I know that way, I will put my all into it! Windy, rainy, stormy days, and movement in nature, strong colour contrasts in the sky and in the sea; I quite often pick the subjects that I know my materials and processes complement. When I start painting, I become as inspired by the materials and processes as I do from the subject itself.

Special Educational Needs in education can cover a vast range of diagnoses from ASD through to SALT, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and more.

As more and more children are identified as having some sort of SEN requirement, at varying levels of support, all schools have had to adapt and ensure they can offer children (and families) what they need to succeed in education and throughout their careers and future lives.

As autumn gets into full swing, the colours we’re pulled towards to build ourselves habitats that make us feel safe, cocooned and calm echo what we can see on the outside (in keeping with the vogue for the all-natural), but with a luxe twist.

With the countdown towards winter marching on, everything seems a bit more difficult. Getting used to, again, the darkness, the drizzle and the dropping temperatures. The Funky Appliance Company, founded by husband-andwife team Joe and Sadie Sillett and based in West Sussex is preparing for a big 2023. The company’s first product the Funky Iron was launched in December 2018 and since then they have launched a multiple award-winning kettle and toaster set, the Funky Kettle and the Funky Toaster. Against the backdrop of a tough economic climate, the company reported 318% growth in 2022 and are forecasting similar levels of growth for 2023.

Having received a lot of interest from international buyers, The Funky Appliance Company will exhibit its range of products at The Inspired Home Show in Chicago in March 2023, where representatives from the USA and Canada will join the Funky Management Team. This exhibition will see the company show its next product, the Funky Air Fryer for the first time. The air fryer market has exploded globally and Joe and Sadie were very keen to enter this product category as soon as possible. Joe Sillett, Co-Founder and CEO commented, “Sadie and I have used air fryers for over 8 years now so we understand the product category very well indeed. Not only do air fryers save you significant money in electricity costs, they also cook

food brilliantly. We can’t wait to launch our 5.5L Funky Air Fryer in Quarter 2 2023 and we are certain that it will be an absolute winner with customers, as it will be made by the best air fryer factory in the world.”

Alongside the Funky Air Fryer, the company has received huge interest in its 1970’s TV style Funky Microwave. Sadie Sillett, CoFounder added, “We have already been approached by three major global appliance brands asking whether they can collaborate with us on the Funky Microwave by sharing our design with them. At this moment in time, we have told them that we prefer to launch it as our product with our branding on as we see this product as being the real jewel in the crown. You can have the Funky Microwave with the legs up or folded down – with the Funky Microwave standing proudly on its feet, it will enable customers to clean underneath and around the Funky Microwave much easier. We are really excited about this product which has worldwide IP protection.”

The Funky Appliance Company is currently talking to a number of investors vis a vis significant capital being injected into the business to fuel the growth and build of new products. 2023 promises to be a very exciting year

Tucked away at the entrance to the mystical Cornish Castle of Trematon sits a small lodge house – ‘Quercus Lodge’ – an unassuming octagonal building painted in a dusky cream. Nothing on the outside suggests what you will find within: a riot of pattern and colour, layered fabrics and wallpapers that draw you into a fantasy world of flowers and foliage. Here, the kitchen feels pared back by comparison to the other rooms, with its Huckleberry freestanding kitchen furniture uniquely customised for House of Hackney.

Beginning the latest project in the renovation of their home the Castle of Trematon, owners of House of Hackney Frieda Gormley and and Javvy M Royle approached Huckleberry to design and make a kitchen for the castle’s lodge house. Huckleberry’s Matt and Claire Podesta met Frieda and Javvy and quickly bonded over their shared ethos of sustainability and love of British-made design. And so the plan for the Quercus Lodge kitchen was born.

Huckleberry creates a unique kitchen for House of Hackney

primarily as stand-alone pieces which emanate balance and proportion, but at the same time incorporate appliances, sinks and taps. It is made to look as though it could have been in the house for years, if not decades, completely comfortable in its surroundings. The family of furniture includes islands, dressers, base cabinets incorporating sinks, hobs and dishwashers, tall cupboards, plate racks and tables.

Creating kitchen furniture for this project was exciting especially incorporating the new range of House of Hackney paint and tiles. Huckleberry’s Scullery Bench has been given a House of Hackney twist including a decorative frieze, which is also used on the cooker hood, and finished off with hand turned oak acorn finials.

“Inspired by Georgian cabinetry and Arts and Crafts values, Huckleberry were the perfect people to create the kitchen for the Quercus Lodge,” says Frieda Gormley. “With sustainability at the heart of the brand, their distinctive, enduring design, quality British craftsmanship and responsibly sourced wood ensure each piece is made to last a lifetime; and the results are truly beautiful.”

Starting an architectural business as the Covid pandemic arrived was a challenging time for James and Rosie (whilst raising two young children!) but having spent over 15 years studying, living and working together, they know the importance of good design and the value it brings to the environment in which we live and work. Having two young children and a mischievous jack Russell rescue dog, they really do understand the functional pressures of a family home. They share a strong ethos for aspirational design, that has simplicity of form and material details, to bring a calming, coastal feel to their designs. The husband-and-wife-duo brings a different dynamic to a project that is refreshing to see.

Case Study Project, Lilliput, Poole Nearing Completion

RIBA Stages 0-2 - Concept Design

Baron + Baron architects were commissioned by a local family to remodel and extend their existing home in Lilliput.Through close exploration of their project brief, design aspirations and getting to know their family life, we were delighted to present our concept design ideas which were well received.

RIBA Stage 3Planning

Our planning package was submitted and permission was granted without objection so we quickly moved into developing the bespoke technical package of drawings for submission to Building Control.

RIBA Stage 4aTechnical Design (Building Regulations)

With our involvement continuing from the start, we were able to carry through the original design intention into the detail which made the design work seamlessly. We met with the clients and design team consultants, to make the design work as efficiently as possible prior to any work starting on site.

RIBA Stage 5 / 6 / 7

Works commenced and the project is nearing completion. We are really looking forward to exploring the finished project when it is fully finished …. Keep an eye out for more photos from us over the next few months!

Entering their third year since launch, design duo Scarlett Hampton and Niki Wright have continued to impress with their constant release of innovative and trend leading lighting designs.

Building on their successes, the pair look towards a more natural and grounding design ethos for this Autumn Winter season.

“Hand woven rattan remains an integral part of our range this year” explains Hampton, “the natural finish, warm light and diffused shadows are just things we can’t resist”.

Following their ‘Lagom’: just enough approach, lights&lamps offer a diverse range of elegantly simple products using striking forms in an array of different materials.

“There is already so much natural intricacy in the materials we choose” describes Wright “that we believe the shapes and overall compositions should be kept minimal to let each substrate speak for itself”.

This sentiment can be found in the Orcia linen dome floor lamp and the Ruzo 4 light porcelain chandelier.

Alongside hand woven rattan and raffia, lights&lamps have created a collection of beautiful pieces using crackle ceramics, polished marbles, ribbed concrete and soft slubbed linens.

Wright and Hampton know their audience and pride themselves on listening to customer feedback and requests. Their ability to create new products and answer demand is market leading and has meant they have already built a loyal following within the UK.

“Our aim is and has always been to offer more for less” continues Wright, “the design details, the product scale and the materials we use all ensure our customer’s expectations are exceeded every time”.

Iam originally from Essex, but I have since journeyed down South to plant roots on the coast. A joiner by trade, I am now a self-employed craftsman who lives in the very heart of Dorset. When I am not creating bespoke home furnishings or preparing stock for markets, I am putting out fires as a retained firefighter for my local station.

Live Edge Living was born in 2019. A small idea soon developed when I took the leap of faith to commit to my passion of woodwork at the beginning of 2020. Charcuterie boards are my bread and butter and the artistry of creating unique and one-off boards never gets old.

I am so lucky to do what I love. Beauty can be found in the simplicity of the wood grain. Nurturing larger slabs to create bespoke tables and worktops is my dream job. I also specialise in working with Epoxy Resin which merges rustic charm with a contemporary twist.
