A Century of Art and Architecture

2022

marks the centenary of the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum. For one hundred years, it has been welcoming visitors to its unique and extraordinary environment. It has changed so little that it is possible to imagine that the founders, Annie and Merton Russell-Cotes could appear at any minute and offer to show you round their home and its treasures.

Annie and Merton built the house in 1901 and filled it with their collections of paintings, sculptures and ceramics, not to mention the souvenirs they collected on their world travels.

They soon decided to donate the house and most of its collections to the people of Bournemouth and it has been the town’s most significant arts attraction ever since.

It is a rare survivor of a Victorian villa with interiors and collections typical of the period.

Many such villas would have graced the clifftop of Bournemouth. Visitors really enjoy the feeling that they have stepped back in time and been transported into a dense Victorian house.

No minimalism here! What makes it even more special is the breath-taking views of Christchurch Bay from Old Harry Rocks to the Needles from the historic rooms.

The house was originally built as a retirement home by Sir Merton and Lady Russell-Cotes, but with an eye to showcasing their collections and demonstrating their good taste and wealth as much as

creating a comfortable home.

Born in 1835 in Staffordshire, Merton began life as a travelling salesman but moved into the hotel industry. Spotting an opportunity, he took over the Bath Hotel, Bournemouth adding Royal to the name as soon as he could, Merton quickly made a large fortune and became involved in local politics – not all together successfully.

Annie was born in Glasgow, in 1835 and was actively involved in the business. Merton was a great collector of paintings which he displayed in the Hotel, attracting a heady mix of visitors including royalty, Oscar Wilde, superstar actors and the rich and famous of the Victorian world to Bournemouth.

Their success at the Royal Bath Hotel, allowed them to travel the globe and, at the height of the British Empire, wherever they went they collected. Notably on their visit to Japan in 1885, they were so inspired

by Japanese craftsmanship, they sent back 100 packing cases of objects, from Buddhist shrines to straw sandals.

This eclectic mix of world famous pre-Raphaelite paintings, objects from around the world and quirky personal items still fills the Russell-Cotes and delights visitors today.

The power of nature and a love of language unite in spell binding new exhibition

he Lost Words exhibition comes to the region for the first time in a special showing at Bournemouth’s Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum. Original artwork and poetry from the bestselling book combine to celebrate the power of nature. A season of events, activities and tours showcases the exhibition in new and novel ways If you haven’t already had the opportunity, why not visit the Russell-Cotes for their current exhibition that brings together the power of nature, a love of language, and beautiful artwork, running until Sunday 18 September 2022.

The Lost Words is an enchanting exhibition which combines the creative talents of writer Robert Macfarlane and artist Jackie Morris to celebrate the relationship between language and the living world, and nature’s power to spark the imagination.

Visitors have been delighted by the beautiful watercolours and thought-provoking poetry featured in this beautiful exhibition.

The exhibition is based on The Lost Words, the Sunday Times bestselling book, published in 2017. The Lost Words has become a “cultural phenomenon” (The Guardian). It has sold around a quarter of a million hardback copies. It has been translated into several languages and adapted into film, drama, dance, radio, classical music, folk-song, jigsaws, board-games and puppet-theatre. A grassroots movement to donate a copy of the book to every primary school in England, Wales and Scotland is nearing completion.

The Lost Words began as a response to the removal of the names of plants and animals from children’s dictionaries due to their lack of use in everyday life. The Lost Words is a unique collaborative project between renowned writer Robert Macfarlane (author of

The Old Ways and Landmarks) and artist Jackie Morris (The White Fox, Tell Me a Dragon), taking the form of both an exhibition and a book published by Hamish Hamilton. Suitable for all ages, the exhibition features 20 acrostic spell-poems and 50 beautiful watercolour and gold-leaf original paintings which were used to create the book. approached Chris Mabire, Owner of Canvas Gallery in Canford Cliffs and Winchester with a cheeky proposition to commandeer the space.

If he wanted to go on holiday in the summer would

he be keen to hand over the keys to his newly refurbished gallery in Canford Cliffs? - Allowing me to take all the work down, exchanging it for my own paintings. He kindly agreed and put a great deal of trust into someone who was relatively unknown to him.

The exhibition which runs until 6pm on Sunday 7th August has over three years of my paintings, very personal paintings that I couldn’t part with to sell until now.

I wanted to call the show ‘From the silence of the mountains to the crashing of the sea’. It’s an old lyric from ‘Question’ a Moody Blues track back in the 70’s and it’s always seemed to touch a chord with me. The show includes paintings inspired by the Swiss, French and Italian Alps, the South of France, mainly Antibes, and our own beautiful coastline which made its way into my paintings only very recently due to not being able to go far during the height of the pandemic.

More about me

Nature is fascinating to me, especially in extreme circumstances, such as storms. I am particularly fascinated by the sea, and how it offers such an interesting base for experimentation with painting and paints. In painting I feel very strongly that energy must be met with energy. By this I mean big seas and a powerful subject matter benefits from energetic, physical and confident painting, which usually includes allowing the paint to have its own way without using a brush. Dripping, pouring, throwing, lifting, shaking and so on, all add to these involuntary effects. Through these processes and techniques I hope to capture the power and atmosphere of the environment that I have placed myself into.

I paint what gets my heart beating fast as I know that way, I will put my all into it! Windy, rainy, stormy days, and movement in nature, strong colour contrasts in the sky and in the sea; I quite often pick the subjects that I know my materials and processes complement. When I start painting, I become as inspired by the materials and processes as I do from the subject itself.

Having finished a three year degree from Wimbledon College of Art in Fine Art Painting, I stayed living in London for a further three years before moving to Poole in Dorset. I have built up an impressive following in the Capital due to exhibiting my paintings in all the Affordable Art Fairs and selling privately throughout the city.

I’ve held my own pop-up shops in Clapham Common, Pall Mall and Notting Hill. I often bring a body of work to London to show interested clients.

I explore the natural world around me.

I see painting as an intuitive process and I often spend months at a time observing my choice of subject matter before painting in order to bring the atmosphere of the landscape back into the studio and on to my canvases..

Second World War walk Explore the hidden features of Studland’s Second World War past that remind us of the importance of Studland as a training ground for troops in the months leading up to D-Day.

START 1: From Middle Beach car park, descend the path by the lookout hut and go left to a bridge over a small stream. Here you can view a line of Dragon’s Teeth (SZ036830).

2: Go between the beach huts onto the beach, turn right and head south along the seashore.

3: Go past the beach café and turn right up the main track before turning left onto the waymarked coast path.

Just a few hundred metres along this route is Fort Henry (SZ037828).

4: Continue along the coast path then head inland on a signposted route to the Bankes Arms. Please note there is currently no access to South Beach at this point due to a landslip. During the Second World War, the Bankes Arms was the control base for a major experiment to test the effectiveness of burning oil as a defence against a German seaborne invasion. This was known as Project Fougasse and involved piping oil to the sea and firing it by explosive charges.

Given the ocean receives less than 1% of all global charitable giving (making it the least funded of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)), the Arksen initiative, 10% for the Ocean, is a simple concept: an open invitation to individuals, families, and organisations worldwide to dedicate 10% of their charitable giving to ocean philanthropy. Funding will be directed to a collective giving fund which diversifies grant monies across pre-vetted ocean causes worldwide. The resultant funding can be delivered at scale and reach multiple innovative and impactful projects simultaneously, to advance ocean recovery and achieve environmental sustainability.

he Monaco Yacht Show has announced new developments in its themed exhibition areas, once again proving its will to immerse visitors in the world of superyachting.

The 2022 edition is set to confirm the status of the MYS’s “seducation” programme, which was launched last year. This three-year plan of action is designed to attract a new generation of yachting clients, thanks to two core concepts: “education” and “seduction” (aka “seducation”).

Education: meeting trade experts in themed exhibition areas

The show’s themed exhibition areas have been redistributed more efficiently, making it easier for the new wave of yachting customers to meet experts in their respective fields and to discover the range of products and services required to successfully complete their yachting project.

The organisers are therefore revamping the Dockside Area, the Sailing Yacht Area and the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub, all three of which were launched in 2021.

Be it in the water or on the docks, the Dockside Area features superyachts, tenders and all manner of services directly related to the 48 AUGUST 2022

world of yachting. Visitors can meet the shipbrokers, shipyards and designers who worked on the various yachts on display.

The Sailing Yacht Area will be relocated to Quai l’Hirondelle, on the inner side of Port Hercule.

The Yacht Design & Innovation Hub - dedicated to future yacht design projects - is set to triple in size, including a 100-m² upstairs conference area.

These areas will complement the show’s other themed exhibitions: • Parvis Piscine: yacht interior design and decoration companies, • Upper Deck Lounge (at Parvis Piscine): luxury products and services, • Quai Antoine Ier: yacht tenders, water toys, luxury cars and motorbikes, • Darse Sud tent: equipment manufacturers and yachting services, • Quai Albert Ier tent: yacht-related equipment, maintenance and service companies.

Dockside Area will be open to the public.

unveils the first C-type Continuation

aguar Classic has completed building the first C-type Continuation. The strictly limited production run is well underway at Jaguar’s Classic Works, Coventry, and the first vehicle has finished shakedown testing ready for delivery to an excited customer.

Each C-type Continuation undergoes at least 250 miles of physical testing by Jaguar Classic engineers, following a build process that requires 3,000 hours of intensive and highly skilled craft.

The first customer Continuation is finished in Pastel Green with Suede Green leather seats and is inspired by the original Jaguar C-type which won the 224-mile long, 50-lap sports car race at the Reims Grand Prix Meeting on 29 June 1952.

This vehicle was the first C-type fitted with disc brakes to win in international competition. It was after driver Stirling Moss persuaded Jaguar to implement the pioneering technology it had in development. The victory at Reims was a glimpse to the C-type’s dominance at the following year’s Le Mans 24 Hour, and Jaguar’s continued supremacy in THE DETAILS 1950’s sports car racing.

ew research has revealed some shocking statistics on the amount of plastic going to landfill each year.

The Big Plastic Count saw 100,000 households track how many pieces of disposable plastic packaging they threw away, with the results showing an average of 66 pieces per home, per week. Scaling up to every household in the UK, that means around 96 billion pieces of plastic packaging are binned every year.

The survey found 12% of discarded plastics were recycled in UK facilities, with a further 17% shipped abroad for processing.

Many of us are looking for ways to reduce the amount of single-use plastic we buy and use, but with some products, it’s difficult to find suitable alternatives.

ll eyes have been on the tennis, as Wimbledon marked a triumphant return to full crowds.

And yet we’ve also been keeping a close look at the stands, which were typically full of celebrities keen to show off their fanciest tennis-appropriate outfits…

While the all-white dress code only applies to the tennis players, some celebrities have used it as inspiration for their courtside looks. Sienna Miller gave her signature Noughties Boho style a 2022 update, wearing a white lacy dress given an edge with a chunky black belt and snakeskin shoes.

Lashana Lynch also got in on the all-white action, while drawing upon another big trend of the season: crochet. Wearing Ralph Lauren, she paired her crocheted midi dress with a sharp tailored blazer and sporty trainers.

There are some famous faces you always know you’re going to see at Wimbledon, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge firmly fall into that category.

Beckham’s outfit was typically classy and fashion-forward this year: a perfectly tailored Ralph Lauren suit, with a double-breasted brown blazer, cream trousers and a striped shirt.

Gemma Chan channelled sporty chic for her Wimbledon outfit, wearing a green checkerboard minidress from Louis Vuitton, paired with a handbag that had a bright yellow coin purse attached to look like a tennis ball.

The brand’s website says the green colour of the dress “nods to the manicured tennis courts of Wimbledon” – making it a no-brainer for the occasion.

he world-famous London Fashion Week, presented by Clearpay, returns with catwalks, celebrities, glitz and glamour. It is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world – and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers alongside Paris, Milan and New York. It presents an unrivalled opportunity to showcase some of the world’s leading fashion talent and the best and brightest names in the industry.

While most of us will be planning our Autumn/Winter wardrobe, designers at London Fashion Week will be showcasing their Spring/ Summer 2023 Collections. It is a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends whether colourful, crazy or controversial - the world is watching as fashion history is made.

A provisional schedule for this year’s London Fashion Week has been announced and so far, it sees the return of over 100 emerging and established designers. Burberry will return to the official calendar with a physical show format after showing digitally for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The brand staged its first physical show after the pandemic off schedule in March earlier this year.

Other brands set to return include JW Anderson, Emilia Wickstead, Erdem, Huishan Zhang, Molly Goddard, Rejina Pyo, Roskanda, Halpern, and Simone Rocha, LVMH Prize winners Nensi Dojaka and S.S. Daley, as well as brands including Richard Malone, Supriya Lele, Knwls, Chopova Lowena, Susan Fang, Pronounce, David Koma, 16Arlington, Daniel Fletcher and Edward Crutchley.

The upcoming season also includes, a number of brands that are set to make their runway debut. One such designer is Raf Simons, who will be bringing his latest archetypal Spring Summer 2023 Womenswear and Menswear Collection.to the runway for the first time. “It’s been a dream for a while to show in London — a city where fashion and creativity is omnipresent in the streets, and where I see exceptional people with a strong unique style” said the Prada co-creative director. Simon’s “for confident outsiders” approach

has been sanctioned as a source of inspiration for artists such as Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Future, ASAP Rocky, Drake, and Kanye West who in an interview cited Simons as the primary influence for his Yeezy Season 1 collection.

The BFC Newgen show space will continue to be at The Old Selfridges Hotel for emerging talents including Asai, Chet Lo, Eftychia, Paolo Carzana, Ancuta Sarca, Stefan Cooke, Yuhan Wang, Sinéad O’Dwyer, Leo Carlton, Di Petsa, Faben, Helen Kirkum, Masha Popova and Harri.

A chair in continuous production since its design in 1947 and one of the best-selling wooden chairs in Danish history, the J39 by Børge Mogensen has had a sustainable makeover for its 75th anniversary. Fredericia is marking the occasion by returning to the seat’s material origins – hand-woven sedge grass, which for the first time since it was conceived comprises the seat, a highly sustainable material, the grass grows rapidly as well as lending the chair a rich texture and an almost Mediterranean mood.

British-led design preserves Belgravia coach house style

by Rundum Meir has brought 21st century functionality, access and security to a Grade II listed property in London’s exclusive Belgravia.

One objective of the renovation project by RDB Architecture & Interiors sought to provide improved access to the garage of the property, which is located on one of the capital’s most desirable residential streets close to Eaton Square Gardens. This had to be done in a way that was sympathetic to the local architecture and compliant with the house’s listed status.

The garage doors of the properties lining this cobblestone street are fine examples of the 19th century coach house tradition. Hence, any attempt to dramatically alter the external appearance of the doors would be detrimental to the elegant appeal of this upmarket neighbourhood and flatly refused by council planners.

This was the ideal project for Rundum Meir, who custom manufacture every one of their garage doors to a suit a project’s exacting requirements. Here, the client brief was to retain the look of the existing swing opening garage door, but enable up and over automated functionality for improved access and to make best use of the available space.

A timber engineered door was the solution, finished in traditional black and complete with the original heavy cast iron Charles Collinge hinges. The door was manufactured by Rundum Meir’s skilled craftsmen at its factory in Germany, who also designed and built the overhead mechanism to comfortably accommodate 80 AUGUST 2022

its significant weight. Once manufactured, the garage door was weighed to enable the design of the correct spring counterbalance system and deliver many years of reliable operation.

Danesch Missaghian, owner manager at Rundum Meir (UK) said: “The coach house is one of the most defining features of the British Victorian mews house, so it is vital that we preserve this tradition whilst making such properties suitable for today’s world. In being able to manufacture every garage door to meet very specific requirements, satisfying planners in the process, our customers do not have to make compromises as the bespoke up and over door at this property in Belgravia clearly demonstrates.”
