Fans of the great outdoors can look forward to a spectacular celebration of spring plants, gardens and gardening from Friday 3 – Sunday 5 May 2024 when the BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair returns to Beaulieu. Whether you’re an experienced grower, a gardening beginner or just enjoy spending time in the garden, this year’s Spring Fair has something for everyone, with inspiration and take-home ideas throughout. Join the partying at this year’s Dorset Opera Festival as the company celebrates its Golden Jubilee! The celebrations began last November when the Festival was nominated as a finalist in the prestigious International Opera Awards. This year’s world première is a new commission from supremely talented composer, Paul Carr. His music can be heard regularly on Classic FM. The composition celebrating the 50th anniversary of Dorset Opera is Under the Greenwood Tree – Thomas Hardy’s second novel, set to a libretto by Euan Tait

The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, Bournemouth, is thrilled to announce the opening of a brand-new exhibition in partnership with Liss-Llewellyn Fine Art, A Painter in Paris: Albert de Belleroche (1864 – 1944), the first major retrospective of artworks by painter and lithographer, Albert de Belleroche. The exhibition runs from Friday 3 May 2024 to Sunday 22 September 2024.

Join the partying at this year’s Dorset Opera Festival as the company celebrates its Golden Jubilee! The celebrations began last November when the Festival was nominated as a finalist in the prestigious International Opera Awards.

Dorset Opera’s very first performance (Smetana’s Bartered Bride at Sherborne School in 1974), was graced by the presence of none other than opera aficionado His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales (now, His Majesty, King Charles III).

50 years on – and firmly based at Bryanston, Blandford Forum –the Festival brings two major works and an Opera Gala to what is confidently billed as ‘The Social Highlight of Dorset’s Summer’!

With a chorus of 60 and a full orchestra, this year’s opera choices are: Puccini’s most famous opera, Madama Butterfly (commemorating 100 years since the composer’s death). This tells the heartrending account of a young geisha from Nagasaki, who marries an American naval officer, for love. He, on the other hand, marries for convenience – intending to take an American bride on his return to the States. Watch and listen in horror as their worlds descend into chaos. Madama Butterfly contains the famous aria Un bel di… (One Fine Day) and the well-known Humming Chorus…

Whether you’re an experienced grower, a gardening beginner or just enjoy spending time in the garden, this year’s Spring Fair has something for everyone, with inspiration and take-home ideas throughout. Visitors can expect stunning show gardens and floral displays, stages featuring friendly advice from Gardeners’ World TV presenters and magazine editors, hands-on workshops and demonstrations by expert hosts, garden tours,

plants to browse and buy, and more. With exciting new features and a new show layout, it’s the perfect spring day out.

Headline sponsor, Hillier, will present the Spring Fair’s central feature - a stunning woodland-themed seasonal show garden with shadefriendly planting, flowers and bulbs. Plant information will be available throughout, with advice pods, a large retail area, and expert advice from Hillier’s nursery team on the main stage.

Children can enjoy free gardening activities at the Budding Little Gardeners’ Workshops area, with a timetable of daily drop-in sessions. From mulching compost into soil to planting seedlings to grow at home, workshops are linked to the National Curriculum with take-home worksheets. Young visitors can also explore the Little Beaulieu adventure playground, Monorail Skytrain, woodland walks and medieval abbey ruins.

We offer annual Launch & Retrieve services for jet skis and boats up to30ft, with an hour’s notice we can have your boat or ski on the water ready to go, all you need to do is hop aboard. Similarly, when you return just leave your boat or ski on our jetty and we will take care of the rest.

VALET MOORING

Popular during the Summer is our Valet Mooring service, aiming to reduce the faff of covers and cleaning we will bring your boat to the jetty where she will be ready to go, again on return simply leave the boat there and we will return it to it’s mooring and cover it up. Once a month we will haul out and pressure wash the hull so as to keep your boat in top condition. Sandpolo saddles up for another year of polo and parties for Summer 2024 for BEACH POLO LIFE

TSandpolo 2024 is back

his summer, the weekend of July 12/13, sees Sandpolo, also known as the British Beach Polo Championships, return to Sandbanks blue flag beach in Poole, Dorset. Sandpolo, now in its 17th year, is the world’s leading beach polo tournament, featuring the top polo players and their magnificent ponies. The glamourous event is now an annual highlight in the Dorset calendar, and this year looks to be a sellout weekend of fast-paced stadium polo, feasting, and extravagant parties. Year on year the luxury event welcomes up to 8,000 spectators who flock to the beach to enjoy the polo, hospitality, parties and outstanding scenery of the Jurassic Coast.

The Sandpolo weekend is the largest beach polo event in the world and is played in an enclosed arena with spectators up close and personal, and has often been referred to as ‘Hockey on Horse Back.’ It is a sport that demands exceptional physical and mental prowess. Players must possess excellent riding skills, as they navigate their horses at high speeds while manoeuvring the mallet to strike the ball accurately. It requires precise hand-eye coordination, balance, and agility. Now in its 4th year, this eagerly anticipated event promises a day filled with education, engagement and eco-friendly fun for all ages.

This year’s theme, “Small Sustainable Steps,” underscores the importance of individual actions in creating a greener future for our planet. From the youngest members of our community to seasoned environmental enthusiasts, everyone is invited to explore ways to minimise waste, promote recycling and champion tree planting initiatives.

DUCATI BOURNEMOUTH REVS UP FOR A NEW SEASON

It was time to raise the side stands and rev the engines at Ducati Bournemouth last month, as they kicked off the 2024 season in style.

The Ducati Bournemouth team were joined by British Superbike Champion Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne, who brought along two of his race bikes, chatted with customers all day and signed autographs.

Slippers the Split, a converted Volkswagen split screen van, provided the music while Seafoods Fish & Chips helped visitors refuel.

Customers had the chance to see new 2024 models including the Hypermotard 698 Mono and the DesertX Rally.

The Hypermotard 698 Mono is the first single-cylinder, road-going Supermotard by Ducati. Simple, lightweight, and agile, it is a true “fun-bike” with racing DNA. It is available in classic Ducati Red with powder-coated frame, or in the RVE version with dedicated graphics, black frame and DQS quickshifter as standard.

For younger riders, in possession of an A2 licence, Ducati offers the version with power limited to 35 kW.

The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, Bournemouth, is thrilled to announce the opening of a brand-new exhibition in partnership with Liss-Llewellyn Fine Art, A Painter in Paris: Albert de Belleroche (1864 – 1944), the first major retrospective of artworks by painter and lithographer, Albert de Belleroche. The exhibition runs from Friday 3 May 2024 to Sunday 22 September 2024.

Born in Wales in 1864, Belleroche grew up in France and immersed himself in the vibrant Parisian art scene, forging friendships with luminaries including Henri de ToulouseLautrec, Edgar Degas and Auguste Renoir. He also formed a lifelong friendship with John Singer Sargent, with whom he shared studios throughout his career. Lili Grenier modelled for Belleroche, and also appears in many notable works by Henri de ToulouseLautrec, becoming known as the face of La Belle-Epoque aesthetic. Toulouse-Lautrec and Belleroche even painted portraits of each other.

This rich, new exhibition features over 60 oils and lithographs by Belleroche, many of which have never been on public display. It explores Belleroche’s artistic journey and his relationships with his Impressionist contemporaries, who shaped his distinctive style and contributed to his lasting legacy. The Impressionist movement’s emphasis on capturing the fleeting effects of light left an indelible mark on Belleroche’s work, infusing it

with vibrancy and spontaneity. The exhibition showcases a diverse range of works, from intimate portraits and evocative landscapes, to captivating still lives. Each piece reflects Belleroche’s keen observation, technical mastery, and ability to infuse his scenes with emotional depth.

Don’t forget about what ‘Prep’ education

is

really about…

There are so many threats to ‘Prep’ education at the moment and much has been written about the primary impacts of these. It is, however, the secondary order impact that worries me most on behalf of our children and their parents who are investing so much in private education.

The increasing market pressures have resulted in independent senior schools adjusting their models to start at Year 7 (when pupils are 11). This, in turn, has meant that many prep schools (and especially in London) are being forced to finish at the end of Year 6. So, prep school fees are going towards 11+ preparation (which is, of course, better done at school than via tutoring) rather than genuine preparation for the social, pastoral and academic challenges that lie ahead in the teenage years and beyond. By transferring Years 7 and 8 to senior schools, we are missing the opportunity to prepare our pupils to make the most of and to flourish in these senior schools. This has always been the key secret of a quality Prep education.

Ironically, as pressures increase on teenagers it is now that this preparation is properly needed. A 13 year-old who truly knows who they are as a person will be more able to cope with the peer pressure of social comparison that comes at senior school. They will also fully understand the importance of intrinsic motivation from an academic point of view and will enjoy their learning more as a result.

At Eagle House (the prep school owned by, and next to, Wellington College) we aim to offer the very best of education in the crucial two years that are Years 7 and 8. The benefits of spending these years in a Prep school are imparted in a passive way, simply by being the leaders in the school and not being ‘socially squashed’ by older pupils. But, in modern prep schools, they are also imparted

actively via immersive pastoral care, via reflective work with tutors and via coaching. New pupils joining (with flexi-boarding options) add social competition in Years 7 and 8 but small set sizes allow that competition to be truly preparatory rather than ‘sink or swim’ in nature. So, as the market changes, let’s be careful not to forget what makes Prep schools so special and so genuinely important.

Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery, Dulwich, is delighted to announce the findings of its latest inspection from the Independent Schools Inspectorate. The inspection, which was carried out in November 2023, praised Rosemead’s academic approach to learning, pastoral care and support and the positive influence of the school’s values, vision, and leadership.

This, supported by an extensive enrichment programme and much support for individuals, impacts on all groups of pupils, enabling them to make good and often rapid progress over time.”

Speaking about the report, Head of Rosemead, Graeme McCafferty explained: “I am absolutely thrilled to share our

outstanding recent inspection report with our community. One standout strength that truly shines through is our highly customised approach to every child’s academic progress. The report highlighted our dedication to tailoring personal learning programs for each child, particularly in subjects like Maths, English, VR, and NVR.”

This recognition reaffirms our commitment to providing the best possible education for every child at Rosemead, and I couldn’t be prouder of our school’s achievement.”

Children from an early age become confident speakers and develop their reading skills well.

The report comes at an exciting time for Rosemead. Last year, the school announced a merger with St Dunstan’s College joining St Dunstan’s Community of Schools.

St Dunstan’s Group Head, Nick Hewlett, said: “The whole community is delighted with the ISI inspection for Rosemead. The report rightly recognises the outstanding education Rosemead is offering as one of south London’s leading prep schools. Bringing our schools together has been a wonderful opportunity, allowing our staff and students to work closer together, learning from one another and enhancing our students’ educational journeys. I pay tribute to the staff, children and parents who are part of this onward journey, and I am very excited by Rosemead’s future.”

Noting the recent merger, the report highlighted: ‘Governors and senior leaders work well together to promote the effectiveness of the school. Governors’ vision has a positive influence on every area of the school and drives continual improvement, for example, the recent decision to merge with another school.’

With an abundance of trips, Ballard pupils continue to learn and build skills in and out of the classroom. In the Spring Term alone, from Year 1 to Year 11, their pupils have enjoyed 28 trips. Some highlights include: for those who love STEM, Years 1&2 and Years 5 visited Winchester Science Museum for a day of exploration; senior Scholars travelled to London for ‘Maths in Action’, a series of lectures and workshops before success at the Southampton ‘Maths Feast Competition’.

The DT Scholars also did incredibly well at their Rotary competition and Scholars loved their Science Week workshops with the whole of Year 10 spending a day exploring the world of Science too.

Ballard’s aspiring writers attended a creative writing workshop, inspired by two authors visiting the School during the weeklong celebration of World Book Day. Year 10 historians visited Whitechapel and Year 9 travelled to Ypres for a poignant Battlefields tour. Pupils in Years 6 to 8 debated important topics at a ‘Mini United Nations’ event, acting as Brazilian delegates to try to bring a positive resolution to international issues such as climate change. All of the pupils taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards completed their practice expeditions.

Ballard pupils have performed at the O2 at ‘Young Voices‘; attended performances of ‘Blood Brothers’ and ‘Guys and Dolls’; and danced on stage at the Bournemouth Pavilion Dance in ‘Origins’, a youth dance platform. Years 7 to 11 also created a spectacular production of ‘Footloose’.

The Sports department at Ballard took a number of pupils to compete in the National Cross Country finals, as well as the South West Hockey finals (U14 boys). Sports Scholars visited Southampton FC’s training ground and Year 8 had a chance to visit Bath to watch some top class sport. Years 9 & 10 travelled to Italy for a ski trip with the opportunity for those who were beginners to visit a dry ski slope beforehand. This is even before Ballard’s busy Summer term with its dedicated trips week! Trips, both local and abroad, are built around learning above and beyond the curriculum, as well as having huge amounts of fun, building bonds and

forging memories.

At Ballard, you don’t have to travel out of school to experience amazing things. They also invite inspiring individuals into school including Olympians, actors, authors and genocide survivors. These visits encourage debate and teach important life lessons, including tolerance, hard work and perseverance. SHORT SHORTS

The warmer months are all about baring more, and for the spring/summer season, the mini has been pushed aside in favour of the micro short. That’s right, it’s time to get your pins out. From Paris to Milan, models strutted down the catwalk in the shortest of shorts. THE FERTILITY CENTRE

Formerly the Assisted Conception Unit, The Fertility Centre is a longstanding centre of excellence for fertility treatment and care at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. In 2021 they enlarged the Centre with a new satellite service at West Middlesex University Hospital, extending patient care and convenient access across West London.
