Art is the WINE OF LIFE Much anticipated, talked about, waited for… finally Berkhamsted has exactly what it needed!
T
he Berkeley opened its doors last weekend for the first time in its new guise. An art gallery with a twist. For those that knew it before, it is still an art gallery with Paul on hand to guide you through and advise you on your purchase, however now it has a new quality. Things have progressed. An idea that has been in the making for some time and in varying themes, the hopes and dreams and quite frankly an amazing vision have all now been realised. Let us introduce you to The Berkeley – Berkhamsted’s exciting new wine bar with an art twist... The perfect place to unwind after work, you will be surrounded by very carefully selected pieces of art, displayed in such a way that you cannot help but look around, take them all in, be impressed. The art is for sale
however, this is now a very contemporary wine bar. On arrival, you are free to wonder throughout the rooms and enjoy the display – but be sure to pick up a wine list. With over 40 wines, Champagnes and Proseccos available this will take you through the choices – helping you to find the wine that you think is perfect for you. And if that doesn’t quite get the decision made there are plenty of knowledgeable staff on hand to talk to you in as much detail as you wish about the grape, the fruitiness, the zestiness, the region and the smoothness of all of the wines on offer. If (like I was at the opening night) you are still struggling to decide, you can try any of the wines on offer as a taster. On arrival I was greeted by an enthusiastic and very likeable host who explained to me that the wine is self-serve from one of four machines ; Georgia (O’Keefe) Vincent (Van Gogh), 1 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6
Henri (Matisse) and Claude (Monet). These machines are state of the art and keep the wine at exactly the right temperature and airtight – all created to deliver the perfect glass. I simply purchased and pre-loaded a card and went to make my decisions. I probably looked a little lost for I was helped by a fabulous member of staff who started off by asking me what wine I drink normally. With this information she was able to suggest a couple of options however, the fantastic part was before committing to purchase a full glass, I could use my card to purchase a ‘taster’. Where else can you try just a small amount of a jolly good bottle of wine before committing yourself ? If wine is not necessarily your thing – there is a regular bar that serves bottled beer, soft drinks, cocktails, coffees and speciality teas. With sharing platters to tempt your palette there really is something for everyone. The bar was buzzing with laughter, conversation, glasses chinking – if you haven’t tried it yet be sure to put it on your list for your next night out

A hidden
TREASURE
Harleyford Golf Club is set in truly magnificent surroundings, nestled by the River Thames at Marlow. Discovering Harleyford for the first time is like uncovering a hidden treasure.
B
eautifully crafted in a natural parkland setting, the 6,714 yard par 72 course is both challenging and rewarding to players of all levels. The history of the estate dates back to the 12th century and is designated as “an area of outstanding beauty”. The clubhouse has been developed on a theme from the Victorian farm buildings and provides stunning facilities for any social occasion. It was good to meet Jon Jones, the Head Professional at Harleyford to hear his thoughts on the game Why should people take up golf ? The majority of those that haven’t played don’t understand why we’re so nutty about the game but consider this; we get to enjoy, regularly the great outdoors in some of the world’s prettiest settings. It’s also great exercise, we walk over 4 miles in a game and intersperse it with moments of explosive activity and carrying (or at least) a 20lb bag and clubs. Apart from that it’s a great way to meet friends and to make business acquaintances! Why should local people join Harleyford Golf Club? Why not?! In my opinion this is the best course in the area by miles. The greens are laid out to USGA specification and the course was designed by world renowned course architect Donald Steel, probably the best course designer of his generation. Add to that the care and attention put into the
1 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6
place by the first class greenkeepers here and it is a compelling proposition. We have huge support from management as well so all in all it is a truly special place. What is the fastest way for someone new to the game to improve their scores? Putting! Most people think ball striking is key. It is important but ultimately we spend half of our time on the greens so learning to put can really shave that handicap! What is the most common mistake you see the average player make? Many guys and girls try to lift the ball in the air when playing a shot. As it is backspin that makes the ball rise through the air, you need to hit down on the ball rather than scoop it. More established golfers tend to get very quick in their swing and consequently loose rhythm. Golf is all about timing, and often you will hit the ball further if you swing more softly. If you fancy trying golf here at Harleyford, please give us a call and we can book you a tee time. Light up
THE TOWN
Remember, remember the 5th of November… this year will see the annual firework display at Beaconsfield Cricket Club light up the town with a display more magical and spectacular than ever before.
L
ast year, this hugely popular event drew a crowd of 6,000 locals and, with the inclusion of some new attractions and backing from some big local companies, this year is set to be the best yet. Said Festival Organiser and BCC’s House and Grounds Chairman, Eileen Daniel, “The Cricket Club Fireworks Display is a muchanticipated event in Beaconsfield’s social calendar and we take great pride in delivering a fantastic night for families from the town itself and from the surrounding villages. Not only is it a great event, but the money raised enables us to support sport, health and local schools in the area”. This year, for the first time, Beaconsfield Cricket Club has managed to secure the services of Titanium, the company responsible for some of Britain’s most spectacular pyrotechnics, including London and Edinburgh New Year’s Eve displays, so be prepared for an impressive show. And, of course, no firework event is complete without a giant bonfire to add atmosphere and warmth to proceedings. Fireworks and bonfires are just for starters though, as new features for 2016 include a junior fun fair as well as a DJ and local bands who will be bringing music to the crowds later in the evening, creating a chilled winter festival vibe. There
1 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6
are some fantastic food and drink options lined up too, including wood-fired pizzas, hog roast, fish & chips, burgers, churros and chocolate and Indian food by Basmati. The Beaconsfield Cricket Club Fireworks Festival is very kindly sponsored by Inland Homes, BP Collins LLP and Wheels VT whose contributions have enabled the club to provide a more exciting event than ever before, as well as giving additional support to local schools. If your child’s school is participating in our revenue generating ticket scheme, you will receive details from them including a code which should be entered when booking tickets on the BCC Fireworks website. Booking your tickets in advance will enable you to take advantage of a special discounted price, as well as benefitting your school directly. The Beaconsfield Cricket Club Fireworks Festival takes place on November 5th. Gates open at 5.45pm with the bonfire being lit at 7pm and fireworks from 7.45pm. Tickets cost £6 in advance and £8 on the door, under 7s receive free entry. THE DETAILS For more information and to book tickets, visit www.beaconsfieldcricketclubfireworks.com

Literary
DELIGHTS
As the seasons roll from mists and mellow fruitfulness to bare November days we are delighted to dress your minds for long late-night conversations around dinner tables and fireplaces on subjects ranging from Jane Austen to Saddam Hussein by way of Henry VIII and Suleiman the Magnificent.
T
hese delights of non-fiction begin with the late, but great, addition to our literary festival line up, John Simpson on October 15th. He has had a BBC career spanning fifty years and has on many occasions stood at the gates of history and given voice to those whose stories have been drowned out in bloodshed and gunfire. His other works include several volumes of autobiography with first hand accounts of the Tiananmen Square massacre, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the return of Khomeini to Iran. Taking in 20th Century conflict - from the Crimean War to Tiananmen Square and Sarajevo, Vietnam to the fall of Baghdad - We Chose To Speak of War and Strife is an ode to an endangered tradition by one of its greatest practitioners. The following Wednesday, the 19th October, we are delighted to welcome one of our most treasured men of letters John Julius Norwich, back to Chorleywood. His latest book Four Princes sweeps across the Renaissance world, telling the storied lives of the four greatest rulers of the age Henry VIII, Charles V of Spain, Francis I of France and Suleiman the Magnificent - all born within a decade of each other. Using his power for illuminating on broad and diverse themes he shows how their wary obsession with one another laid the foundations for modern Europe. Individually, each man could hardly have been more different - from the scandals of Henry’s
2 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6
six wives to Charles’s monasticism – but, together, they dominated the world stage. With a cast list that extends from Leonardo da Vinci to Barbarossa, Norwich will be our perfect guide to this most colourful century. Apparently, we’ve all got Jane Austen wrong. It’s not all grand country houses and Georgian Bridget Joneses (thought perhaps you have been reading her far more intelligently than I have), her novels were much more subversive than that, as Helena Kelly will be telling us on October 26th. In her first, brilliantly original book, Austen expert Helena Kelly introduces the reader to a passionate woman living in an age of revolution. to a writer who used what was regarded as the lightest of literary genres, the novel, to grapple with the weightiest of subjects – feminism, slavery, abuse, the treatment of the poor, the power of the Church, even evolution – at a time, and in a place, when to write about such things directly was almost treasonous. Uncovering a radical, spirited and politically engaged novelist, Kelly will leave you wanting to return to Austen again and again.

Meat TREATS
R
Since 1965 Troutts have been supplying the community with the finest cuts of meat.
oger Troutt set up shop in West Wycombe, having learned the trade initially under his uncle (who ran Stocktons on Hazlemere Parade). The West Wycombe store is still there today, and in 1982 was joined by the Hazlemere shop that was renamed RS Troutt & Co. Rogers aim -to be a cut above the rest. His passion –for every customer to leave happy that they visited. This is still the aim today. The Hazlemere shop was re-fitted last year on the 50th anniversary with enhanced butchery counters, a smart dry ageing facility for beef and a kitchen where hot snacks are prepared on site. As we head into the Festive season Richard recalls being a young lad of about 8. “Plucking turkeys, making sausages, even the cleaning – we were all encouraged to get involved in the family business” says Richard. After training for two years at Smithfield College, Richard worked at traditional butchers in Chesham and Tring before returning to Hazlemere in 1985 aged 18. Manager of West Wycombe
The Black Barn Turkey Promise
Our black barn free range turkeys are grown at our farm in Meldreth where they roam freely in tree lined meadows. Select slow growing breeds are used to give a variation of size to the customer of between 8lb-25lb, but allow the bird to reach full adult maturity. They are fed on a diet consisting of mainly cereals that are free from growth promoters and antibiotics. They are dry plucked and hand finished, then hung for a minimum of seven days to give an unrivalled level of both texture and flavour. Black barn free range bronze and white turkeys are the latest addition to the farm alongside their traditionally reared turkeys and will be a delicious centre piece for your Christmas table 2 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6
at 19 he now runs both shops with managers in place respectively. So why use a traditional butcher instead of a supermarket? Richard explains why customers repeatedly use RS Troutts & Co “Customers like to select their meat and to have it butchered in front of them. We give them exactly what they want, from single portion to large joint for a special occasion”. RS Troutt & Co source their meat from farms that they know – giving assured quality and complete traceability. “For many of our customers it is important that the meat they are serving to their family is the best quality possible”. Another excellent reason to buy from your local butcher is the knowledge on how to get the best from the meat. “We often advise on best cooking times and methods” explains Richard. “Cooking times vary depending on the size and also on the time that the meat has been hung, or which ‘season’ the meat is in”. It seems that if you have the question, the team at RS Troutt & Co will certainly have the answer! As well as the traditional butchered cuts, RS Troutt & Co have a selection of meats ready prepared in delicious sauces. Sold in an oven proof dish they are ready to pop in the oven, cook and enjoy! Pop in to the shop – be it for your weekly meat or that special occasion – you will not be disappointed. Christmas orders now being taken. Seasonally
TASTY!
At Seasons we love a good wedding and have catered for every different type of wedding breakfast you can think of over the last 11 years. Claire Dodd, our Director chef talks about her favourites, using the best seasonal produce available.
W
hat would be your perfect, locally sourced menu for a spring/summer wedding? A Spring wedding is a joy to cater for, it is when British seasonal produce starts to shine. An obvious, but delicious and elegant starter would have to be asparagus, lightly steamed or grilled, served with Serrano ham hollandaise and toasted rye. A main of Spring lamb, served perfectly pink, with hot buttered Jersey Royals & fresh mint, pea purée with pea shoots, Madeira and red wine jus is a fabulous way to treat your guests. Rhubarb is in season and a perfect ingredient to highlight in the dessert, a minute trio of rhubarb and elderflower fool, a meringue with stem ginger, and a rhubarb and vanilla custard tart, rose hip syrup marry together beautifully. In the height of Summer, tomatoes, beans and peas are the stars, along with summer berries. A sumptuous summer buffet, heaving with salads and fruits would fit the bill. And for an autumn/winter one? Autumn and winter is the time to cosy up, and richer more earthy foods are at their peak. A Ballantine of Guinea fowl, stuffed with wild mushrooms is an interesting alternative to the plain old chicken breast. If you’re feeling daring Venison with a blackberry and juniper 2 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6
jus, served with beetroot rosti and butternut squash puree will delight guests especially when served with a warm chocolate pear and hazelnut tart served with homemade stem ginger ice-cream. What would be the one piece of advice you would offer couples looking at their wedding breakfast/catering? Advice Don’t feel you have to follow trends for your wedding breakfast, throw caution to the wind and indulge in decadent food that you both love and desire, and that also nod to your personalities and life together, it’s your day, your guests will love you for it! Are there any trends for catering in 2016/17? Current trends are very much focused on ‘clean’ eating, and plant-based foods. While delicious as well as healthy, they don’t really translate too well for a celebration! Salted caramel, burnt butter and chocolate mud cake are buzzwords that are delicious and indulgent. Street food style food is both fun and current, and add a bit of theatre to an event. I think hog roasts will continue to be popular, not just the hog though, a Greek slow roast lamb, shredded in a pitta with crumbled feta, tzatziki and fresh mint is also a possibility. nother 2500 Santas set to run through Marlow High Street on December 4th. The race is organised by the 3 Rotary Clubs of Marlow, including the new generation Marlow Bridge Club and promises to be more exciting than before, with additional entertainment for the spectators and improved facilities for the runners. This is the 12th year of this fabulous Marlow event and as always will start from Higginson Park under, the watchful eye of Sir Steve Redgrave and our own paralympian Naomi Riches who will lead the warm up before joining the race. The lead charity for 2016 is Christmas for Kids (http:// www.christmasforkids.org.uk), who bring pantomimes to children’s hospices up and down the country. The money we raise will be concentrated on the local area ensuring that those with the most serious and life threatening illnesses can still have festive fun at Christmas in their place of care. A host of other - mainly local - charities will also benefit from this great event. As last year our lead sponsor is Sytner BMW, who will be with us on the day. Last year we raised over £30,000 for charity and with the help of our runners collecting their own sponsorship, we aim to try and get as close to £40,000 as possible. 3 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6
What started with just a few hundred runners has grown and is now a major event in the Marlow diary for participants and spectators alike. The 5 kilometre route starts and finishes in Higginson Park. The park or Marlow High Street are great places to watch the sea of colour go by. For all those who complete the course there is a celebratory bronze medal, just to say “Well done”. Potential participants should sign up quickly and start raising sponsorship as early as possible. The website will go live on September 1st and anyone interested will need to book early to avoid disappointment, we were fully booked 4 weeks before the event last year. Marlow Thames Rotary Club President Richard Hockly says: “Organising the Santa’s Fun Run involves a lot of hard work by the members of the Marlow, Marlow Thames and Marlow Bridge Rotary Clubs. We do everything from agreeing the 5 km route with the Council, developing and managing the website to ordering and distributing the Santa suits. And well over 100 people volunteer to help us on the day to make sure everything goes safely and smoothly.” THE DETAILS For more information interested participants should visit www.santasfunrun.org or call 01628 476610 after the 1st September 2016

South Bucks Hospice NEWS ROUND-UP Liz Taylor, Head of Fundraising & Marketing at South Bucks Hospice, gives us a summary of the latest hospice news.
“
It’s been a busy transition into autumn at South Bucks Hospice. We hosted our ‘thank you and farewell’ Garden Party for our patients, supporters and their guests ahead of the big move to our brand new Community Hospice in spring 2017. The afternoon saw sunshine, until it was time to pack up! As well as lots of refreshments and companionship, a raffle was held with impressive prizes donated by wonderful local businesses.
“We saw keen runners race around Black Park in the South Bucks 10k Road Race which, for the first time, also had a 5k course for those new to running. Cllr Duncan Smith doubled up as running man and chairman as he ran the 10k and changed into his formal suit and chain of office to present the trophies. We were thrilled to be donated the entry fees and are looking forward to finding out how much was raised. “Last month, an Old Time Music Hall production came to town. The talented cast dressed up in fabulous costumes for three evenings of theatrical entertainment at the Holmer Green Village Centre, with all profits donated to South Bucks Hospice. The audience enjoyed three nights of magic and laughter, as well as a mid-week matinee where guests could also enjoy afternoon tea. “We have been humbled by the support of our fundraisers over the last few weeks and we would like to say a huge thank you on behalf of all of our patients, their families and the Hospice team.” THE DETAILS South Bucks Hospice - Palliative and Lymphoedema Care Visit us: www.sbh.org.uk Follow us: @SBucksHospice Like us: www.facebook.com/southbuckshospice

Chef Laurie Gear Autumn Recipe & Kitchen News
W
hen we think of October in the kitchen our thoughts turn to autumn. The leaves are falling and there is a distinct chill in the air. It is a good month to draw upon late summer harvest gluts. I was very fortunate to inherit a Victoria Plum tree in the garden of our new house and for the past two years have harvested a plentiful supply. I have chosen a steamed Victoria Plum Pudding recipe this month, which will be sure to lift your spirits on a crisp autumn day.
Autumn Lunch Tasting Offer With a complimentary Autumnal Kir Royale with Crème de Mûre - served upon arrival. Experience the culinary theatre of the open kitchen and view Laurie and his team in action at the pass.
Steamed Victoria Plum Pudding Ingredients 225 g caster sugar 300 ml water 750 g Victoria plums stoned and chopped For the sponge 100 g unsalted butter 150 g caster sugar 1 vanilla pod split 2 x eggs 1 x egg yolk 200 g self-raising flour Finely grated zest and juice of one lemon Method 1. Grease six 150 ml moulds or one 1000 ml basin with butter. 2. Dissolve the sugar in the water, then bring to the boil and boil for a few minutes to make a syrup.
3 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6
3. Add the plums and cook gently for about 8 – 10 minutes to a lumpy marmalade consistency. 4. To make the sponge, mix the butter and the sugar together until almost white, then add the insides of the vanilla pod and beat in the egg and egg yolk. 5. Fold in the flour lemon juice and zest. 6. Spoon some of the plums and their syrup into the bottom of the moulds or basin. 7. Cover with the sponge mix to come three quarters up the sides. 8. Cover with buttered foil and place in a steamer or pan, half full of water. 9. The small puddings will only need 40 minutes in the hot steamer, the large pudding will need 1 – 1½ hours. 10. When cooked, turn the puddings out on to plate, or plate and spoon some more of the hot Victoria plum syrup over each pudding. 11. Serve with homemade custard or thick cream for a delicious comforting taste of autumn.
The Lunch Tasting Offer is available from Tuesday to Friday lunchtime until the end of October 2016 for just £38 per person optional wine flight £18 (additional sixth course @ £6.00)
**please mention ‘Lunch Offer’ when making your reservation** (offer available for up to six guests)

Remember, remember the fifth of November... because that’s the date London’s premier shopping street will be turned into a glittering showcase of motoring’s past, present and future providing a fabulous day out for all the family.
P
lus of course, all the fabulous stores along Regent Street will be open throughout the day so there’s ample opportunity for some early Christmas shopping, too!

With the entire street closed to traffic from Piccadilly Circus to Oxford Circus, visitors can wander freely among the exhibits. The free-to-view Regent Street Motor Show, first held in 2005, goes from strength to strength with attractions including a display of pre1905 veteran cars from the dawn of motoring, as well as today’s cars and tomorrow’s technologies from an increasing number of manufacturers keen to show city-friendly low and zero emission eco machines to visitors. Several of these will also be available for a short test drive on the day thanks to an initiative from Go Ultra Low. Part of the Regent Street Motor Show’s appeal lies in its variety. As well as advanced new cars, there will be many other attractions for the car enthusiast with classic car displays, historic racing cars, bikes, and even musical entertainment from song and dance troupe, the West End Kids. And of course there are the veterans. The Regent Street Motor Show takes place the day before the famous Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox that leaves from nearby Hyde Park. Around 100 of these venerable machines will be displayed as part of the annual Veteran Car Concours d’Elegance. The owners of these pioneering
machines will be competing for a number of different awards, including the Most Original or Unrestored Car and the Concours d’Equipe for drivers and passengers wearing period costume. Visitors will also be able to vote for their own personal favourite in the Spectator’s Choice award. Despite their undoubted value – and, in some cases, their fragility – Regent Street visitors are encouraged to inspect the cars at close quarters and quiz their ever-enthusiastic owners and drivers. If you’re heading to the Show, don’t forget your camera! The whole thing lasts about 40 minutes and the effect is noticeable immediately - I feel full of energy for the rest of the day rather than my usual evening slump, and my skin perks up over the next couple of days too, with a few spots I had clearing up faster than usual. ondon Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month’s event proved to be just that. London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity to showcase some of the world’s leading fashion talent, with the schedule packed with shows, presentations, showrooms, events and parties from the best and brightest names in the industry. As usual, celebrities swarmed to attend the fashion event of the year – including Ellie Goulding, Yasmin Le Bon, Cara Delevingne, Eva Herzigova, Steve McQueen, Daisy Lowe, Fearne Cotton and Samantha Cameron, It’s a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends. The world watches as fashion history is made. While most of us are thinking about our winter wardrobes, designers were showcasing next year’s Spring/Summer Collections. So what does SS17 have in store for us, according to Britain’s most trend-setting brands?
BURBERRY
Burberry opened the doors to Makers House, Soho, its new London Fashion Week venue with the presentation of its inaugural straight-to-consumer collection. The origins of the new men’s and women’s collections, which were shown together for the first time, are found in the spirit of Nancy Lancaster’s interior and garden designs and Virginia Woolf ’s novel ‘Orlando’. Inspired by a reflection on the way a house changes its character over the centuries driven by the people, clothes 6 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6
and cultures that inhabit it, the collection combines noble and authentic fabrics, blending denim and sweatshirting with cashmere and pyjama silks. It blurs masculine and feminine, casual and formal, night and day, all mixed together to create a new reality born of all the moments that have gone before. Highlights from the collection include deconstructed trench coats, regimental capes, coats and jackets (including The Cavalry Jacket, The Military Tailcoat and The Parade Jacket), waisted field jackets (including The Floral Field Jacket), pea coats, pyjama-style trousers, shirts and shorts, and ruffle-neck shirts. Also previewed today was The Bridle Bag, a new runway design for men and women, which takes its inspiration from classic British equestrian designs and Burberry’s outdoor heritage.

For new season neutrals, read: naturals. in keeping with the ruggedness of summer in the highlands, textures are as raw as possible, with a suite of pieces crafted in a knitted version of pringle’s woven summer yarn, with supporting linen and cotton staples in complementary tones. indigo adds depth to the palette, using natural dyes to create a rich hue for a summery alternative to black. flashes of vivid brights, stripes and contrast trims reference decades of sporting heritage, bringing the tennis and golfing knits of the 1930s up to date with block-coloured skirts, tops and classic cardigans.
“We can now look forward to the designer trends hitting the high streets for Spring/ Summer 2017, and re-create the look so stylishly presented on the catwalk” TEMPERLEY LONDON
Their Summer 2017 collection celebrates the new desert rainbow tribe, exploring a girls desire for escapism with rich sunset colours and iridescent glimmers. They follow her dreams of the other world through the lens of a desert mirage. Hand painted surrealist prints on fluid silk habotai and seersucker chiffon followed by effortless one shouldered drape dresses in a sunset inspired ombre palette. Modern tapestry jacquard with eclectic stripes layered with folk inspired prints and stitch work with magical creatures and surreal elements. Psychedelic waves of rainbow sequin embroidery, kaleidoscopic sun-bleached colours and maypole inspired streamers emanate energy and optimism. Louche tailoring paired with feminine leopard metallic fil coupe chiffon ruffles. Eveningwear adorned with iridescent sequins interspersed with whimsical flowers, cupped clear sequins and tubular beads in a leopard

Spring/Summer 2017 Sophia Webster exudes attitude, exploring a tropical colour palette against a backdrop of iconic 60’s musical influences. Vibrant prints and delicate embellishments navigate us through the wonderful world of the ‘Dolly Birds Of Paradise’. This collection celebrates my love of music, in particular the original Dreamgirls: Diana Ross and The Supremes, The Shirelles and Martha Reeves and The Vandellas - all musical icons of the 60’s. My inspiration was ‘Dreamgirls’ meets Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’s set within a tropical paradise. Long autumnal evenings offer the perfect opportunity to repair any summer damage, and to prep and protect your skin in time for winter. Thought this month I would talk about some routine dentistry that we all needRestorative work to make our teeth functional and look beautiful as well !
Q
Dear Dr Popat, could you please explain the difference between a Crown, Cap and a Veneer? A. Those of us working in the Dental profession often assume everybody knows everything we are talking about. Therefore I would like to thank you for asking this question, as it is one of the things that so many people get mixed up with. A crown is an artificial cover that is used to restore, protect, and strengthen your tooth and keep it healthy. The crown fits right over the remaining part of the tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape and contour of a natural tooth. Crowns are sometimes also known as ‘caps’. You only need one if; • You have a tooth that has been worn down by teeth grinding, an improper bite, or decay, a crown restoration could save it. • Crowns will give cracked or broken teeth much-needed support. • A tooth that has loosened due to gum disease can be stabilised by crowning it and connecting it to the neighbouring teeth within reason. • Gaps in your smile can be replaced by incorporating a single crown onto the root of a dental implant placed into your jawbone. • You may have discoloured fillings and would like to improve the appearance of the tooth. • It may hold a bridge or denture firmly in place. • You may have had an accident and damaged the tooth. There are a few options you have. Some of which are; 1. Ceramic Crowns are the most natural-looking and can be translucent as your own enamel. They are the perfect choice for those with metal allergies, but people usually choose them because of how they look. 2. Ceramic-fused-to-metal-crowns combine this natural look with the strength of metal underneath, but they are not as translucent as ceramic alone. 3. Precious metal (Gold and Palladium). These crowns are very strong and hard-wearing, but are usually used at the back of the mouth, where they are not visible. Once a choice of crown has been made, the dentist will prepare the tooth to the ideal shape for the crown. This will involve removing most of the outer surface, and leaving a strong inner ‘core’. The amount of the tooth removed will be the same thickness of the crown to be fitted. Once the tooth is shaped, the dentist will take an impression of the prepared tooth, one of the opposite jaw and possibly another to mark the way you bite together. The impressions will
68 SEPTEMBER 2016
be given to a Dental Technician, along with any other information need to make the crown. This will ensure that the crown will be constructed to fit your mouth perfectly. The procedure of a crown placement takes at least two visits. The first, for the preparation, impression, shade taking and fitting a temporary crown. The second to fit the permanent crown. A Veneer on the other hand is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth, very much as a false fingernail fits over a nail. Sometimes a natural colour ‘composite’ material is used instead of porcelain. Veneers make teeth look natural and healthy, and because they are very thin and are held in place by a special strong bond (rather like super-glue!) very little preparation of the tooth is necessary. Veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of teeth. A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the required colour, to improve a single discoloured or stained tooth or to lighten front teeth (usually the upper ones) generally. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps, when orthodontics (braces) is not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it in line with the others. Veneers should last for many years, but they can chip or break, just as your own teeth can. Your dentist will advise you how long each individual veneer should last. Small chips can be repaired or a new veneer fitted if necessary. A veneer takes at least two visits. The first to prepare the tooth, take impressions and to match the shade and the second to fit it. I recommend visiting the Dental Technician, to have the shade done for better results. Before bonding in place, your dentist will show you your veneer on your tooth to make sure you are happy with it. Bonding a veneer in place is done with a special adhesive, which holds it firmly on the tooth. This is how a thin porcelain veneer gets its strength much like a porcelain tile on your bathroom wall with adhesive. Veneers are quite often used to make teeth look better cosmetically, whilst crowns are better used for teeth which need to be strengthened – either because they have broken, have been weakened by a very large filling, or have had root canal treatment. We also now prefer to align your teeth with Orthodontics first so that any tooth preparation is not needed or if needed it is kept to a minimum. IntroducIng JanIne Scott get to know the Light touch clinic’s Senior aesthetic nurse.
to begin With, hoW did you become interested in aesthetics?
After spending many years at the cutting edge of surgery working alongside eight consultant plastic surgeons at St Thomas’ Hospital, it seemed a natural progression to enter the world of aesthetic medicine. In 12 years of working in aesthetics, I feel privileged to have been part of my patient’s journey as they strive to feel more confident about themselves. I never under estimate that any changes, big or small can have a huge impact on a person’s life.
What do you love most about your job?
I love meeting my patients for the first time, it is a very important part of the relationship where I really get to know what each patient wishes to improve. I always strive to combine treatments that deliver a look that enhances the patient’s natural beauty, no one should ever look over filled or ‘done’. I am well-known for a light but effective approach to my work. It really saddens me when I see a patient that has been over filled, lips being a particular bug bear. The ‘slug’ lip should be banned!
What do you love about the light touch clinic? The clinic is brilliantly led by Dr Natalie Blakely. One of the philosophies of the clinic is that every patient should feel comfortable and relaxed, a cosmetic clinic can be quite daunting place for first time patients! Natalie has established a very warm and welcoming safe haven. As a 5720 O OC CT TO Ob B EE r R 22 00 11 66
team we demand excellence, never compromising on our patients results as this is what defines us a clinic. The team works closely together to deliver a five star experience that should exceed our patient expectations. I couldn’t wish to work in a more welcoming and ethical clinic.
one of the philosophies of the clinic is that every patient should feel comfortable and relaxed, a cosmetic clinic can be quite daunting place for first time patients!
What do consider the highlights of your career so far?
Too many to mention! Building a patient base over many years is really important to me, I have treated many patients for over 11 years and I still see them now, their loyalty and trust in what I do is definitely a highlight. Being listed as one of the UK’s Best Cosmetic Nurses in Tatler is definitely another achievement as it not only recognized what I personally have accomplished, it also recognized nine other brilliant nurses who are part of a nationwide team of highly skilled practitioners delivering excellence to their patients.
your top treatment tips What are your three hero products you Wouldn’t be Without?
• Sunscreen – I cannot emphasise enough how important sunscreen is, we all know the damage UVA rays can cause. A high SPF along with sensible sun exposure will help to reduce those telltale signs as you age. I particularly like the Heliocare range as they have a more intelligent blend of ingredients to treat as well as protect. • Vitamin C Serum – Free radicals are a common part of everyday modern life, Vitamin C will go some way towards mopping these up as well as improving skintone. I love Obagi 15% Vitamin C. • Glycolic Exfoliation – we all should gently exfoliate our skin to get rid of dead skin cells otherwise our skin looks dull and lifeless. You wouldn’t put a beautiful dress on a dirty body, so don’t blame your make up, blame your skin care! I am a massive fan of Glycogent by ZO.
My top treatments tip is not to have a top treatment tip! Every person is so totally different and that’s what makes my job so interesting. The Light Touch Clinic has many different high end treatments and technologies that we can offer our patients. From injectable fillers to gently support the face, wrinkle relaxing injections to freshen lines and Ultrasound to lift and strengthen collagen, some or all of these approaches can be used to achieve a natural and rejuvenated appearance – no two people are the same!
When it comes to ageing, is there anything you Wish you had knoWn years ago?
When I was younger I worried how I would feel about ageing, would it happen overnight? How would it affect me? As I approach my 50th year, I have learnt that it’s really not as bad as I imagined. I feel positive about my ageing because I have a positive attitude towards it, I have had subtle treatments over the years that mean that I am in control of my ageing, not the other way round! I wish I hadn’t worried so much (and not used simple make up wipes as a teenager!)

How to keep up that
Fitness Motivation Now it is Autumn, and the dark nights start to set in, it can be tempting to stay in the warm rather than go outside or to the gym. Many of us have fallen off the wagon because of this, so you are not alone.
H
ere are some tips to keep up that exercise motivation when you are starting to flag.
IMAGINATION & MINDFULESS Remind yourself of how amazing you feel once you have completed a workout. Give yourself a pep talk, think about the person you want to be, how you would like to feel. This gives your workout a clear purpose and you a drive to keep going. USE MUSIC TO SPUR YOU ON Music stirs up lots of powerful emotions in us. Make yourself a playlist with some of your
7 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6
favourite fast and upbeat songs that make you want to dance. Playing them as your exercise will make you want to keep up with the beat. THROW THE BAD STUFF AWAY Clear out your cupboards and fill them with superfoods. If you don’t have bad stuff in your cupboards, you won’t eat it! Fat and sugar-laden foods cause our energy levels to plummet. Bin them and replace them with tasty healthy snacks that will give your body energy and nutrients to be able to cope with your new exercise regime. CHANGE UP YOUR ROUTINE If you have already attempted your new
fitness regime, you no doubt designed your own daily workout plan at the beginning. You will start to get bored of this eventually though, which will cause your motivation to wane. Remember to shake things up every so often- run a different route, change the order of your workout routine, combine different workouts – perhaps an exercise class one day, and a boxercise class another. Anything to stop you just exercising on autopilot. Breathing new life into your workouts keeps it varied, and fresh.

Self-Cleaning Conservatory roof Glass
FACt or FiCtioN? S
elf-cleaning glass was once described as “an impossible dream”, but thanks to an intensive research and development programme many years ago by the world’s leading glass manufacturer, Pilkington, self-cleaning glass is neither fiction or an old wives tale, and it can even over time (with a little precipitation to assist) make bird droppings disappear! Pilkington Activ, was the world’s first self-cleaning glass and has a unique dual action that harnesses the forces of nature to keep the glass free from organic dirt, providing a
7 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6
surface that requires less cleaning, whilst also at the same time delivering clearer, better-looking windows. The secret of Pilkington Activ is a special coating that reacts with ultra-violet (UV) rays from natural daylight (which works even on overcast days and during the night) to break down and disintegrate organic dirt. Organic dirt generally comes from livings plants and creatures (i.e. tree sap or fingerprints or bird droppings, whilst inorganic dirt comes from non-living sources (i.e. cement or plaster dust etc.). The special coating needs 5-7
days exposure to daylight to activate fully. Self-cleaning glass really is no fable, as its special coating breaks down organic dirt, whilst reducing the adherence of inorganic dirt. When rain water runs down self-cleaning glass it washes the loosened dirt away (both organic and inorganic), as the special photo catalytic process used on the coating causes water droplets to spread out to form a “sheet”, enabling dirt particles on the surface to be easily picked up by water and washed off the glass. Inorganic dirt will only be removed by water. Compared with conventional glass, thanks to its hydrophilic form, water on self-cleaning glass dries very quickly, reducing unsightly streaks or marks. The special coating on Pilkington Activ self-cleaning glass can break down even heavy deposits of organic dirt, but does need UV light reaching the glass to enable the breaking down process to work. So during long dry dusty spells, or if windows get heavily soiled, it is advisable to clean the glass using a hosepipe to replicate rainfall or a soft cloth and warm soapy water to enable the process to start all over again. Please note that a period of reactivation may be required, which again is typically 5-7 days. The beauty of Pilkington Activ’s special coating is that it lasts the lifetime of the glazing itself, as it will not be worn away or rubbed off under normal conditions. The coating is integral to the glass, it will not flake or discolour, and can only be affected if the surface itself is damaged, for example, by abrasive cleaners or steel wool. The coating is environmentally friendly, containing harmless chemical substances already found in the home (i.e. in bath oils and toothpaste). In fact as only small amounts of cleaning agents are ever needed, selfcleaning glass is kinder to the environment than normal glass, which needs regular cleaning. Self-cleaning glass can be installed on almost any exterior application, such as windows, conservatories and glass roofs. It can be installed vertically or at an angle of at least 10 degrees, although most efficient at an angle of 30 degrees or more. Self-cleaning glass is ideal for inaccessible windows where organic dirt normally collects like skylights. Specialists and Pilkington glass installers Hazlemere Windows, Doors & Conservatories, advise that self-cleaning glass will prove ineffective if installed under
an overhang or in a position where daylight and/or rain cannot reach it, as it has been designed for exterior use only. It should also be noted that slightly darker tints perform slightly better than clear glass in terms of heat reflection. Self-cleaning glass is an excellent long term investment, as over a period it will save time and money, plus from the cleaning standpoint it is far safer than ordinary glass windows, particularly for conservatories. Pilkington self-cleaning glass can be combined with other glass products in insulating glass units to provide benefits such as thermal insulation, noise reduction, solar control and fire protection. Pilkington Activ is available in clear or blue tinted toughened glass for increased safety and security. It is therefore safe to say that self-cleaning glass is no longer fiction, but a fact.

History repeats
ITSELF The story of Furniture by Martin is intertwined with the history of Beaconsfield and Penn Street.
A
re you sitting comfortably? Our story starts of over 150 years ago when William Hearne, a labourer, and his wife Eliza, a lace maker, established the Hit or Miss Pub in the beautiful village of Penn Street. In his spare time, William made furniture in a small workshop behind the pub – which is exactly what our founder, Martin, did when he was much younger – although in his case it was in the summerhouse in his garden. Initially assembling chairs from turned pieces purchased from bodgers who worked on lathes in sheds in the woods, the Hearne business grew rapidly. William died in the late 1870s and Eliza remarried Samuel Dancer, a labourer from Beaconsfield. By 1895 under the management of Samuel and Eliza, the firm, now called Dancer & Hearne, employed 31 employees. From that point on Dancer & Hearne grew to become one of the biggest furniture companies in the area - by 1938 it had around 500 employees and produced 450,000 chairs a year. Similarly, Furniture by Martin is the fastest growing bespoke furniture maker in the Chilterns – a testament to our quality and customer service. When WWII broke out, the Penn Street factory was given over completely to making parts for the de Havilland Mosquito which were shipped for assembly at the de Havilland factories in Leavesden and Hatfield. In all, over 5,000 aircraft were assembled there.
Not Aircraft, but Furniture by Martin has recently fitted out a fully functioning electric driven racing yacht prototype for a customer. By 1960 the company mainly produced wooden chairs for Government contracts and schools, and dining chairs for other furniture firms. In 1967 it was bought by Parker-Knoll who operated the business until 1970 when the Ministry of Education decided to abandon wooden chairs in favour of plastic and metal, depriving Dancer & Hearne of the core of its business. The company closed in 1970. Furniture by Martin, a maker of bespoke finely crafted furniture, opened for business eight years ago in the old Dancer & Hearne factory – brought up to date with the latest furniture making technology. Furniture by Martin carries on the tradition of furniture making in the Chilterns producing hand crafted stand alone and fitted furniture for clients of discerning taste. How to modernise YOUR KITCHEN Sue Birch, a designer at KB Studios of Beaconsfield offers advice on how to transform a dated kitchen into a modern light filled space
W
hen homeowners are investing in a new kitchen they are usually looking to replace a tired dated kitchen with a new modern open plan living space. If it is possible to take down walls or extend you can physically create more space but when this is not an option there are still plenty of design tips and tricks of the trade that will help. Natural light is the best way to keep a room bright so bringing light into the room is key. Adding glass doors, bi-folds or full height sliding doors can be a great start. This will not only flood the room with light but create a connection with the outside that makes both the room and the garden seem larger. Skylights are another option that can transform a room where windows and doors are limited. Colour can have a huge impact on how spacious a kitchen looks and feels so keeping to a light palette of white or a pale shade of a soft colour will work best and keep the space feeling fresh and bright. The type of surface used can also make a difference, incorporating gloss surfaces rather than matt and using glass for splashbacks, or glass fronted cupboard doors will all help reflect the light in the room In a kitchen we completed recently we removed the radiators and installed underfloor heating which also helped to maximise the illusion of space. We also focused on storage in that kitchen 7 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6
and incorporated carousel cupboards – ingenious inventions that allow huge amounts of storage – keeping the worktops and other areas clear of clutter for a streamlined look. A boiling water tap is also great for this as it removes the need for a kettle, another item not needed on the worktops! Choosing modern built in appliances with smooth outlines will also help, an induction rather than a gas hob for example. Appliances that can double up and do more than one task such as a combined microwave and oven will also free up more space. A professional kitchen design will maximise the effectiveness of how the kitchen is used and can help create a spacious feeling as people move around it. Adding a breakfast bar instead of an island will provide a social space where people can meet but will take up much less floor space. Don’t forget that a good designer will be your best friend and a wise investment so choose one that shares your vision and you will enjoy the process - happy updating! “The best we came across” Take a look inside the home and read the story of a happy Timber Windows customer
M
r & Mrs Gibson moved into their early 1900s Hertfordshire home just two years ago and embarked very quickly upon a major refurbishment project including a large extension to the rear, opening up the kitchen and dining area. “The conservation officers wouldn’t allow plastic windows at all; we were governed by the rules on the house and area that all replacements had to be like for like in timber, and the same was the case on the extension works” the Gibsons explain. Throughout the house, all products were chosen in Engineered European Redwood with a large number of slim sash windows hung on traditional cords and weights mechanisms, and finished in White along with sets of French doors and a Black Frenchay front door. The most spectacular feature of all is the Venetian sash in the dining area; a triple sash design dating back many decades
and found all over the country in period properties; this one measuring an impressive 3 metres wide and almost 2.5 metres high. Mr & Mrs Gibson joke about the large sash windows the moment they first saw them, “it was even a surprise to us as to quite how large they were; they were bought off plan with the architect’s guidance.” “We’re really pleased with the windows and doors, they really enhance the house and rooms. The products are the best we came across and we’re so chuffed with how it has all turned out.” “The fitting team were brilliant, we couldn’t fault them at all – they communicated well throughout the process to keep us informed – the attention to detail was truly excellent.” From authentic sash windows and casement windows to front doors, stable doors, French doors, smooth gliding patio doors and folding sliding bi-folding doors, the product range at Timber Windows of Amersham has it covered in both traditional and contemporary styles. Walk down any street in England and you can tell, almost instinctively whether the doors and windows of a home really suit the structure of the building. When the windows are wrong, it is blindingly obvious, but when they have been chosen well, or the original style preserved, the effect is often simply beautiful. At Timber Windows of Amersham, our collection has been carefully and sensitively tailored to complement the English home, with attention to detail at the centre of everything we do. Unlike timber windows and doors of old, our products will not twist, will not rot, require minimal maintenance, and have high levels of security and insulation to ensure there is no need to sacrifice beauty for comfort. From authentic sash windows and casement windows to front doors, stable doors, French doors, smooth gliding patio doors and folding sliding bi-folding doors, our range has it covered in both traditional and contemporary styles. We look forward to welcoming you to our brand new showroom in Amersham to see and experience the beautiful products on display.

W
ith a long heritage in stunning wardrobe design, Neatsmith have become the byword for storage excellence across London. With a selection of classic and contemporary door styles to suit any interior, their bespoke design service means you can create a wardrobe to meet your needs. The latest addition to their collection of styles is the Decorative Glass. The Decorative Glass collection was launched this September at Decorex International, part of the London Design Festival. The renowned design show showcased over 400 leading brands, including the latest in global design talent. Neatsmith exhibited with a striking his-and-hers dressing room design in Anthracite, featuring a range of innovative storage features. The most talked about aspect however, was the Decorative Glass hinged doors in a metallic antique paper and drawer fronts in pearlescent crushed velvet. Using innovative techniques, the Decorative glass collection features intricate fabrics and handmade papers seamlessly encased by a reinforced glass panel. The strengthened glass creates a contemporary style and keeps the materials protected. With over 30 styles to choose from, 8 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6
ranging from lace to a snakeskin texture, the effect is truly glamorous. Whether you make a statement with a full run of hinged doors or add a minimal touch to a dressing room with some drawer fronts, the talented Neatsmith design team will help you to stylishly incorporate Decorative Glass into your design. With a complimentary consultation and detailed 3D visuals, your designer will create the prefect wardrobe tailored to your exact needs. Neatsmith fitted and sliding wardrobes are made to exacting standards by hand, in their North London factory, setting them apart from other wardrobes on the market today. BATHROOMS
Bathrooms - one of the comments we hear most often in the Showroom from customers is ‘I didn’t realise there would be so much to think about, I thought I was just choosing a toilet, basin and bath’ (or shower).
S
ome find this exciting, but most daunting - on average, unless we move house, we might only change our bathrooms once or twice in our lifetimes and no one wants to make a mistake they may have to live with for 20 or more years. Is there a simple answer? Of course not, there never is, but here are a few options that we hope will pique your interest and maybe encourage you to delve deeper to achieve a bathroom that’s uniquely yours:- Don’t be afraid of technology - for example, some of the fastest growing areas at the moment are digital bath & shower systems, with remote controls to turn the shower on from outside the enclosure (so you don’t get hit by that first burst of cold water) or maybe a bath that you can run from a remote control while you’re still in bed?? We like those from Aqualisa such as the HiQu, Ilux, Rise and now the new Infinia range. If you’re working to a strict budget it’s easy to be seduced by cheap taps and showers but consider how much a plumber would charge to change a set of taps a couple of years down the line and it really is a false economy. Most good quality manufacturers have an entry level range, built to the same standard as their designer products but competitively priced, like the Hansgrohe Logis or Focus ranges. Also, why not look at the way that you fill your bath, you don’t have to have taps on the wall or bath anymore
8 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6
- loads of manufacturers offer a filling system that works through your bath overflow and leaves the edges of the bath clear, why not look at the Exafill system from Hansgrohe or bath fillers from Crosswater or Aqualisa. Up for something a little different? Yes bathroom suites are still predominantly white, but how about having the towel rail in a colour to tone with your tiles, the Bisque Deline is one of many available - it comes in a range of sizes and an amazing array of colours and won’t blow the budget. Investigate your lighting options - a simple wow factor could be achieved with low level plinth style lights and a sensor switch that picks up when someone walks into the room. This is particularly good for guest en-suites where your guest may not be familiar with the light switch position - always ask a qualified electrician about suitability for your installation, but the kits aren’t expensive. If you have a little more in your budget bidet toilets are another product gaining popularity. Villeroy and Boch have introduced the sleek ViClean range with options on different seats offering wash and dry technology, heated seats and built in odour extraction - maybe the day will come when they are a standard fixture in all bathrooms. Incidentally, one of the most important questions you’ll be asked when you go into a Showroom is about your water pressure - or it should be if the salesman wants to make sure you purchase the right shower system or taps! So why not go armed with information - whether you have a high or low pressure system, maybe you have a pump, mains pressure or a pressurised system? THE DETAILS Want to know more? Create your perfect
WARDROBE If you are redecorating or are moving into a new home and are thinking about how you are going to design your bedroom then there are many things you may need to consider.
T
he second most important item of furniture in your bedroom is the wardrobe. IQ Furniture have three simple steps to help you design your very own bespoke wardrobe to perfectly match the rest of your bedroom. Step 1: Measure up The first step to creating the ideal wardrobe for your space is to make sure that you measure the available space very carefully. IQ Furniture are able to provide you with a guide to help you measure up, but you can also visit the new showroom for extra peace of mind. Step 2: Choose your doors There are many options when it comes to choosing the doors of your wardrobe. You are able to choose your door fascia style, then decide on whether you would prefer hinged, sliding or flush-sliding mechanisms. After this you will need to select a colour, finish and handles from the extensive options available. Step 3: The interior Although it is very important to focus on how you want the exterior of your new wardrobe to look, it is also key to pay some attention to the interior. Internal fittings and fixtures can be optimised to meet your storage needs. It is very simple to design the interior of your wardrobe and put the pieces together, especially with expert advice from designers. IQ Furniture are able to offer custom-made designs that are far

more flexible than your standard shop bought wardrobes. Once you have chosen the internal finish you can then select the extra elements you need to supplement the basics in order to keep your shoes tidy, suits smart and everything else neat and accessible. Each module comes with two rails and one shelf, but you can add various options. These include glass shelves, drawers, a pull out mirror and display cases for trousers, belts and shoes. The Nur Hinge and Fina Sliding Door Wardrobes by Lema stand out due to their handle built-in frame in the same finish as the rest of the wardrobe. These finishes include natural glossy anodized aluminium or a bronze colour. These bespoke wardrobes can be adapted in depth and come with doors in a range of materials including 10-colour lacquered glass, mirrored doors or upholstered in fabric or eco-leather. Shelves and hanging bars with built-in lights are also available in these wardrobes. There are many precious details that can be made from leather and fabric such as the mats for the drawers and boxes for the shirt compartment. The chaplins guide to lighting Trends for autumn Winter 2016 custoM coLours
L
ighting is a key architectural and design element in our home and as the nights start to draw in it is the perfect time to refresh lighting fixtures and take your interior style to the next level. Lighting is often referred to as the “jewellery of the home” as stylish lighting accessories can often be used to finish off the look of your interior. And although home design trends don’t go in and out as quickly as fashion, there are still some stand-out lighting styles that have gained recent popularity in today’s most designer-focused homes. Here’s our list of the top lighting trends of 2016 to illuminate your new year.
industriAL LuXE
The industrial interior look is one that has been around for several seasons now, but for AW 2016 we have seen a twist on this trend that introduces a little glamour. The industrial interior look is all about exposed raw materials and a pared back style but it is time to start adding shiny decorative elements to help offset the rougher textures seen around the scheme. Lighting is a great place to start when looking to incorporate these touches into your interior with many designers adding a wide range of glossy metal finishes to their collection. A personal favourite of ours are the hand-spun Stanley pendant lights by British lighting manufacturer Original BTC. Group them together for a dramatic effect or mix metals for a laid-back, eclectic look.
It’s time to get creative! In 2015 we saw a steep rise in the way technology is being used in the home sector with many retailers offering virtual interior design services through their websites and apps. This trend looks set to continue as lighting brands start to introduce customisation tools giving the customer the ability to pick finishes, sizes and configurations to suit their individual space. A good example of this is the Bocci 28 pendant, which comes in 68 different colours and be configured in random vertical compositions or cluster shapes
gEoMEtric Lighting
One of the hottest lighting trends right now is geometric lighting fixtures. With clean lines and simple yet striking designs, geometric structures should standout on their own and provide a focal point to the room. Although geometric lighting fixtures invoke a minimalist aesthetic, they’re not just for modern and contemporary interiors. The key to their versatility is in the simplicity of the design. The geometric trend is a great option if you’re looking to give your space a modern or midcentury vibe.
oVErsizEd FiXturEs
Lighting fixtures that make a bold statement and serve as the focal point of a room are trending. If you are looking to make an instant impact, why not try a larger-than-life design to add some style and humour to your interior. You don’t have to have a large home to take part in this trend – a statement pendant in a kitchen or huge floor lamp above a dining room table can make for a beautiful style accent. Homes with tall ceilings or a large hallways and landings can also benefit from the increased sizes of today’s most popular lights.
WArM MEtALs
nAturE insPirEd
One of the next trends for the home will be lighting inspired from elements of nature: in organic forms, in the spectrum of natural colours and with particular reference to the world of leaf and plant silhouettes. Lighting inspired by nature softens the feel of cold, contemporary spaces by adding softer lines and an organic feel to the room. We particularly like the decorative LED chandelier from Moooi inspired by the Heracleum Plant. 9 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6
Warmer metals are in, and this trend is expected to continue through to 2017. Right now, metals in any form are big – but they appear with more subtlety than before. At the moment, there is a real leaning towards warmer tones. From kitchen appliances to hardware to lighting fixtures – bronze, brass and gold tones are making their mark. Not only are finishes “heating up”, but the freedom to mix metals is gaining in popularity. www.chaplins.co.uk
