The hugely popular Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair returns for its Autumn event in Battersea Park. It is the decorator’s favoured source for unusual and eye-catching antiques, 20th century design, works of art and textiles. More than 140 UK and European specialist dealers will be taking part.

The seventh annual Wimbledon BookFest is back, showcasing literature’s leading names and local talent. Confirmed headliners include an evening with comedian, actor, presenter and writer Michael Palin; ballerina and author Darcey Bussell taking a look back at her career through photographs; Wayne Hemingway discussing business and creative industries for young people; Man Booker Prize winning novelist, dramatist and screenwriter Roddy Doyle, who will be in conversation with BBC Radio 4 presenter and Bookfest regular, James Naughtie; and a family sing-along with Cerys Matthews.

London Restaurant Festival in partnership with American Express, now in its fifth year, comprises two elements: Festival Menus and Events, which take place in restaurants over a two-week period in October. This is the capital’s annual citywide celebration of eating out. 350 restaurants will take part in the capital’s biggest restaurant festival, where great value Festival Menus are created by chefs to give food-lovers the chance to try new restaurants.

Launched in 2012 to replace the former Hampstead & Highgate Festival, the Hampstead Arts Festival (HAF) has already forged a reputation for presenting outstanding musicians and programmes. Whilst retaining the local knowledge and connections of the festival it replaced, HAF has new trustees, new artistic direction, a fresh focus and an exciting and ambitious programme for autumn 2013.

GORDON RAMSAY’S NEW LONDON BUSINESS VENTURE

Union Street Café, London SE1 SCHEDULED OPENING – END OF SEPTEMBER 2013

An exciting new restaurant and bar from the Gordon Ramsay Group, is ready to be opened to the public

G

ordon’s latest food establishment is in Borough, just south of the Thames, located on the corner of Union Street and Great Suffolk Street in Southwark, it’s a short walk from the famous market, London Bridge train station and The Shard. Neighbouring buildings include the Union Jack pub and the Union Theatre.

Designed by Russell Sage - who also created the interior of Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen - the space has been influenced by the local area of SE1. The cafe has been described as an ‘urban warehouse destination’ which will offer Mediterranean-influenced food with ingredients sourced from nearby Borough Market and directly from the continent. The food will be cooked in an open theatre-style kitchen so diners could watch the chefs in action.

The images show a stylish warehouse-type interior, with large windows, exposed brick walls and lots of open space complete with neutralcoloured furniture. The restaurant also features a swanky-looking bar area which is littered with red, mustard and olive-coloured chairs, tall lamps and large paintings, where diners can enjoy their favourite tipple before sitting down to eat the Mediterranean-style cuisine. Among the

dishes on the menu will be baked lobster with chili and marjoram; torn pasta with artichoke, pancetta, mint and ricotta; and veal carpaccio with lemon, anchovy, olive and celery. The downstairs bar will serve classic Italian cocktails, including the Negroni, Bellini and Aperol Spritz.

Announcing the venture back in February, Gordon enthused: ‘We’re really excited to be opening Union Street Cafe in September’ We’ve been working on the new site, which is near Borough Market, for the past couple of years and the amazing large warehouse space will offer quality Mediterraneaninfluenced food with a daily changing menu.’

Gordon continues: ‘It’s no secret that Borough Market is one of my favourite places in London. It’s an area where people are really passionate about food and we’ve invested time in finding the right venue. It is an amazing space and we’re really excited about opening.

There will be a real focus on the most amazing produce, cooked in a simple Mediterranean style in a relaxed setting.’

The Gordon Ramsay Group comprises 25 restaurants around the world and boasts a total of nine Michelin stars.

Hampstead Arts Festival is proud to announce its 2013 music programme 29th SEPTEMBER - 3rd DECEMBER 2013

The Hampstead Arts Festival will host some of the finest musicians in the world performing in two wonderful Hampstead venues.

aunched in 2012 to replace the former Hampstead & Highgate Festival, the Hampstead Arts Festival (HAF) has already forged a reputation for presenting outstanding musicians and programmes.

Whilst retaining the local knowledge and connections of the festival it replaced, HAF has new trustees, new artistic direction, a fresh focus and an exciting and ambitious programme for autumn 2013.

One of the highlights of this year’s programme is a performance of Zemlinsky’s String Quartet cycle by the internationally acclaimed Brodsky Quartet. The work, rarely heard in its entirety, will be performed in a series of concerts pairing Zemlinsky with quartets by old masters: Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert and Mozart. Another highlight will be a performance of Bach’s complete Sonatas & Partitas for unaccompanied violin by the young American rising star, Tai Murray.

HAF is also delighted to welcome a string ensemble from the outstanding North York Moors Festival (NYMF), including Brit award winning violinist Jack Liebeck, NYMF founder and director Jamie Walton and celebrated cellist Guy Johnston. The chamber group will perform Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen, Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence and Schoenberg’s Verklarte Nacht.

The festival will be capped by two wonderful recitals by young British superstars. The soprano Sophie Bevan, one of the most sought-after names in classical music at the moment, will take a break from the great opera stages to make a rare appearance singing lieder. Sophie will be accompanied by pianist Sebastian Wybrew. Jazz pianist extraordinaire Gwilym Simcock, in a joint production with the London Jazz Festival, will be making his only solo recital appearance of the London season.

The Festival trustees aim to draw on a strong tradition of the Arts in North London, competing with some of the most renowned music festivals and

venues in the UK, yet giving a fresh and unique perspective to their events.

Venues for this year’s concerts are the lovely 18th century Hampstead Parish Church, the scene of historic recordings by the Amadeus Quartet, and the spectacular Grade 1 listed St Stephen’s on Haverstock Hill, recently unveiled after a multi-million pound restoration.

The Music Director of Hampstead Arts Festival, Eric Usadi, began his adult life as a violinist after studying at The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music, before spending 25 years as a research physicist. Now a trustee of the festival, Eric says of the programming: ‘Some of the finest musicians in the world will be performing a unique blend of repertoire to be heard nowhere else in London this season, presented in two of Hampstead’s crown jewel venues. We look forward to welcoming avid music lovers from both Hampstead and elsewhere in the city.’

He is joined by Jesper Groenvold, a retired business executive who focuses on the Arts through his activities in the charitable sector and collection of art. Jesper discusses the Festival as ‘a relative newcomer, excited to present this program, which brings the quality of the major London music spaces to NW London, while allowing the musicians the freedom to be more adventurous in their programming. We hope to build on the success of last year and increase our core audience.’

nternationally acclaimed artist Hamish Mackie will present a solo exhibition of new works at the Gallery in Cork Street from 7th October 2013. His distinctive sculptural depictions of animals have earned him a reputation as one of the world’s foremost wildlife sculptors and this exhibition will be a culmination of three years’ work dedicated to his subject-matter.

Mackie has created nearly 50 new works for this triennial exhibition, ranging in size from small guinea fowl to life-size camels. Though his passion began with British wildlife, the artist has travelled widely in order to closely observe a diverse range of animals in their natural habitat.

In 2011, he was invited on an expedition cruise to Antarctica with polar experts Ice-Tracks and had the “invaluable opportunity to study and sculpt some of the planet’s hardiest wildlife within their pristine rugged environment” Mackie was particularly fascinated by the albatross he encountered on South Georgia, and was much affected by the fact that 19 out of 21 species of this bird are currently threatened with extinction. In his depictions of them, the artist captures the majesty of the animal, conveying both their magnitude and their vulnerability.

By contrast, Mackie has also travelled to Dubai to study camels, as well as completing a series of dynamic cheetah and leopard sculptures after tracking them with Africat in Namibia.

The exhibition will also showcase British wildlife including otters, deer, game birds and bulls. For the latter, Mackie has not only studied the living animals, but has also looked closely at carcasses in order to gain a deeper understanding of their composition. “For me a knowledge of anatomy is fundamental… Once I had the bull’s anatomy in my head I was able to sculpt the bull series without interruption.”

It is a combination of this careful, compassionate, observation and obvious delight in his subject that allows such vitality in the finished works. As Lucie-Smith comments, “it is not enough simply to observe – he has to fuse himself with what he observes, …his animals always seem to be on the move, or ready, at any moment to move.”

Working closely with the Lockbund Sculpture Foundry in Oxfordshire all the pieces are cast using the lost wax method in either silver or bronze using a ceramic shell as limited editions. The quality of this casting allows the artist’s manipulation of the clay to remain clearly visible in the finished works, so that even a fingerprint can be seen. This is integral to the artistic process as Mackie’s work is reliant on the virtuosity and spontaneity of his gestures “to capture what can only be a momentary vision.”

Mackie has previously staged a number of successful international solo exhibitions, perhaps the most notable being his 2012 show at Mallett in New York. Last year his work was also selected to be displayed in Grosvenor Square and Oxford Street as part of the Cultural Olympiad. Mackie’s work is held in the collections of both corporations and private individuals around the world.

Through his sculptures he also helps to raise funds and awareness for charities including Tusk Trust, and the Countryside Alliance. The artist comments: “I have always been passionate about wildlife and one of the great advantages of what I do is being able to observe nature in its own environment. Through my work, I hope to highlight not only the beauty of our natural world, but also and perhaps more pertinently, how fragile our relationship with it is becoming.” www.hamishmackie.com

Frieze has announced the details of their eleventh contemporary art fair in London

O

n entering its second decade, Frieze London will introduce a new look in 2013 with more sizable public areas and a new layout of galleries, and will be sponsored by Deutsche Bank for the tenth consecutive year.

Working with architects Carmody Groarke, Frieze London has been redesigned to provide the best conditions for showing and viewing art. The new format will ensure that the fair has a more spacious feel and will create the best possible visitor experience at Frieze London 2013.

Frieze London is one of the world’s most influential contemporary art fairs and brings an international audience to the dynamic contemporary art world of the UK capital every October. Once again, coinciding with the London fair, Frieze presents Frieze Masters, a new fair with a contemporary perspective on historical art. Together the crossover between the two fairs will make London the focus for a broad spectrum of international visitors.

Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover, codirectors of Frieze, commented: ‘Last year was an incredibly ambitious and successful year for Frieze, opening both Frieze New York and Frieze Masters in London. These insights will be brought to Frieze Art Fair in London this year and we will introduce some of the biggest changes to the fair since its founding. In its eleventh edition we are excited to raise the bar with this fair.’

Participating Galleries Frieze London is a carefully selected presentation of the most forwardthinking contemporary galleries from around the globe. Despite an increased demand from galleries, in 2013 Frieze London will include over 150 exhibitors. Additions to last year’s participants include: Blum

& Poe (Los Angeles); Galerie Max Hetzler (Berlin), Goodman Gallery (Johannesburg); Maccarone (New York); Overduin and Kite (Los Angeles); and Rodeo (Istanbul).

Debuted at Frieze London in 2012, Focus is a section for galleries up to ten years of age presenting projects specifically conceived for Frieze with works not seen previously in an art fair context.

Highlights in 2013 include the immersive installations of Daniel Steemann Mangrané at Mendes Wood (São Paulo); a nonfunctional telecommunications satelitte by artist and explorer Trevor Paglen at Altman Siegal (San Francisco); and a show and tell by gallery artists Sean Edwards, Jack Strange and Jesse Wine offering visitors the opportunity to talk with them about their work at Limoncello (London).

Frame is a section dedicated to young galleries and is selected on the basis of a proposed solo presentation. The Frame galleries’ selection is advised by curators Rodrigo Moura and Tim Saltarelli. Frame offers an opportunity to discover artists who may not previously have benefitted from an international platform to show their work. Presentations of note in the Frame section include: Ryan Siegan Smith at Johan Berggren Gallery (Malmö); Prem Sahib at Southard Reid (London); Ilya Karilampi at Sandy Brown (Berlin); Ian Change at Formalist Sidewalk Poetry Club (Miami) and Eduardo Basualdo at PSM (Berlin).

Burlington Arcade ...out of this world

urlington Arcade, situated between Bond Street and Piccadilly, is one of the world’s oldest and most celebrated shopping arcades. Almost two hundred years old, the arcade has a rich and varied history. It was the retail destination in Victorian London favoured by royalty and the cream of British society and even set its own “rules of conduct” many of which are still upheld today by the infamous Beadles.

Now famous buildings from around the world, from Eiffel Tower to Freedom Tower, feature in the first ever 180-metre carpet design for Burlington Arcade’s iconic runway.

Linley and Brintons have collaborated to transform Burlington Arcade’s long iconic carpet runway into a showcase of the highest quality British design and craftsmanship and provide a welcome to international visitors of an unparalleled nature.

For the first time in history, a highly anticipated design featuring 92 iconic buildings from around the world, has replaced the traditional 180-metre carpet which runs the full length of the arcade.

The new carpet was unveiled by The Rt Hon Hugo Swire MP, Minister of State at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, with Burlington Arcade’s famous Beadles – the liveried guards wearing frock coats and braided top hats who have policed the Arcade since 1819.

This is the fruit of a collaboration between internationally renowned bespoke furniture

and interior design company Linley, and 200-year-old Royal Warrant holding carpet manufacturers, Brintons Carpets, who have united their talents to welcome international visitors to London’s most iconic shopping arcade.

David Linley, founder of Linley, commented:‘ This is the longest and most complicated carpet we have ever designed. It has taken us around 250 hours to design, and comes from an enduring affection for Burlington Arcade. We are proud to have been part of this landmark project that adds a touch of the LINLEY signature to a unique and historic London destination’ The focus of the design is to welcome international visitors to the luxury landmark, whilst acting as a showcase for British creativity, wit, design and manufacturing. The contemporary design features iconic structures from every continent around the world; from bridges to cultural venues and centres of industry and business. Whilst contemporary, the design is still very much connected to traditional Linley marquetry and furniture and exemplifies architecture and heritage.

The carpet incorporates old and new architecture from around the world in one piece. The layout of the buildings on the carpet is designed to lead visitorsthrough the Arcadeas the city skyline weaves in and out. The buildings are arranged from left to right according to how their respective countries sit on the world map and are clustered together with neighbouring countries from the continents they belong to.

The design includes the Eiffel Tower in Paris, St Paul’s Cathedral in London, Italy’s Duomo di Milano, Reichstagin Berlin, Seattle’s Space Needle, New York’s Empire State Building, Chrysler Building and Guggenheim Museum, the Christ Redeemerin Rio, the Sydney Opera House, Moscow’s Dormition Cathedral, The Aspire Tower in Doha, India’s Taj Mahal, China’s Pearl TV Towerand Forbidden Cityand The Sail in Singapore.

The carpet also features a few design surprises, and visitors who look carefully might see Mary Poppins flying over the London skyline, Quasimodo make an appearance in Paris and King Kong on New York’s Empire State Building.

Following a year when the eyes of the world were on London, thanks to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympic Games, shops in Burlington Arcade celebrated a 42% increase in purchases from international visitors, helping to cement its position as a worldwide shopping destination. Keeping the international spotlight firmly on London’s famous shopping experience, Burlington Arcade commissioned these leaders in exquisite British design, to create a brand new, bespoke carpet that runs the full length of the longest and most beautiful covered shopping arcade in Britain.

Seventh Edition: New Participating Galleries The 7th edition of PAD London will include 21 new participants across all disciplines, making a total of 60 exhibitors from 12 countries. The top-tier contemporary design galleries to join the fair include SMO Gallery, Garrido Gallery, Galleria’O, Galerie Kreo, Galerie BSL, Galerie Gosserez and Galerie Italienne. 20thC design also expands with the participation of Galerie Matthieu Richard, Galerie Pascal Cuisinier and Galerie Dutko, while turn-ofthe-century furniture will be represented by Atelier DL and Oscar Graf.

Ranging from Impressionist drawings to post-war abstract paintings, the selection of works presented by new modern art galleries Vertes, Galleria d’Arte Frediano Farsetti, Galerie Applicat-Prazan, Galerie Jean-François Cazeau and Galerie Silbereis will be of rare quality and exceptional provenance.

This year is set to be the strongest yet for tribal art at PAD with the added participation of Bernard Dulon, whose collection of African art has attracted the attention of renowned institutions and museums worldwide. The field of antiquities will be introduced with David Ghezelbash and Gordian Weber Kunsthandel exhibiting a range of exceptional works from ancient Rome, Egypt and Greece. Japanese art and armour will also make a first-time

appearance at PAD with expert gallery Jean-Christophe Charbonnier, adding to the fair’s diversity and originality.

Once again, luminaries from the worlds of design, art and fashion will come together at PAD to select the winners of the PAD London-Moët Hennessy Prize. The prestigious judging panel, chaired by Jasper Conran, and including architect Amanda Levete, designer Tom Dixon and Serpentine Gallery director Julia Peyton-Jones, will determine the awards for the Best Stand, the Best Fine Art Piece, the Best Contemporary Design Piece and the Best 20thC Decorative Art Piece.

An innovative design project of MwangaBora solar lamps promises to be a major highlight at PAD this year. Created by renowned Kenyan engineer Evans Wadongo - named a CNN Hero in 2010 – the lamps will feature in an installation at the entrance of the fair conceived by fashion designer Reed Krakoff. The lamps will be sold to benefit Wadongo’s organisation Sustainable Development for All Kenya (SDFA-Kenya), a not-for-profit that creates opportunities for education, sustainable development and economic empowerment throughout Africa.

RHS London Harvest Festival Show 2013

ome of the UK’s best nurseries and growers will bring displays of fruits and vegetables, including RHS Chelsea Flower Show medal-winners, Pennard Plants. With a huge range of heritage and heirloom varieties, they will demonstrate alternative ways of growing fruits and vegetables in small spaces to inspire Grow Your Own enthusiasts and city-dwellers alike.

Fruit experts from RHS Garden Wisley will hold apple tasting sessions with fruit harvested from the Surrey garden’s 7000-tree apple orchards, and for any visitors with unknown varieties of apples in their own gardens, the team will be on hand to identify them. The annual Fruit & Vegetable Competition will bring together the best of amateur and professional talent, with perfect fruits and vegetables competing for coveted medals.

The London Orchard Project will be at the show to inspire urban communities to grow urban fruit in unloved and unused spaces.

Pumpkin growers will be bringing their prized specimens to take part in the annual RHS Heaviest Pumpkin Competition, which last year saw a whopping 478kg pumpkin win the prize. Plus, artisan producers will create a harvest market to tempt any food-lover.

There will also be talks, demonstrations and lots of expert advice from the RHS to inspire and help anyone learn how to grow their own. And to round off the show, the RHS Harvest Festival Late on 8 October will feature pumpkin carving, delicious vegetable cocktails from the Midnight Apothecary and music from folk artist Robin Grey.

n October 2013 Christie’s, in association with Waddington Custot Galleries, will stage When Britain Went Pop!, an exhibition exploring the early revolutionary years of the British Pop Art movement, which will launch Christie’s new gallery space in Mayfair.

This is the first comprehensive exhibition of British Pop Art to be held in London. When Britain Went Pop! aims to show how Pop Art began in Britain and how British artists like Richard Hamilton, Peter Blake, David Hockney, Allen Jones and Patrick Caulfield irrevocably shifted the boundaries between popular culture and fine art, leaving a legacy both in Britain and abroad.

celebrated by collectors and museums alike, but many of whose artists have been overlooked in recent years.

A key feature of the exhibition is a collaboration with the artists of the British Pop Art movement and their families, and private collectors who are lending works of British Pop Art from their personal collections. These include Richard Hamilton’s Swingeing London, Peter Blake’s Everly Wall, Gerald Laing’s Lincoln Convertible, Colin Self’s Leopardskin Nuclear Bomber No. 1, Allen Jones’ First Step (illustrated on page one, centre). Other artists exhibited in the show will include Clive Barker, Derek Boshier, Pauline Boty, Patrick Caulfield, Antony Donaldson, Jann Haworth, David Hockney, R.B. Kitaj, Gerald Laing, Nicholas Monro, Eduardo Paolozzi, Peter Phillips, Richard Smith and Joe Tilson. Many of these works have not been exhibited publicly since the 1960s.

British Pop Art was last explored in depth in the UK in 1991 as part of the Royal Academy’s survey exhibition of International Pop Art. This exhibition seeks to bring a fresh engagement with an influential movement long 30 SEPTEMBER2013

The exhibition spans British Pop Art from the 1940s collages of Eduardo Paolozzi to its full maturity in the late 1960s, building on the pioneering work of the ‘Independent Group’ of artists, who began to explore popular culture from the early 1950s.

A highlight of this exhibition is works from the ground-breaking 1961 ‘Young Contemporaries’ exhibition where British Pop Art first appeared in force, including one of the first works David Hockney ever sold (which still has its £12 price tag on the back), and works by Patrick Caulfield, Allen Jones and Derek Boshier. The exhibition firmly established the Pop movement on the UK art scene. When Britain Went Pop represents both early work from the 1940s and 50s by Paolozzi and Hamilton, as well as early 1960s R B KITAJ NIETZCHES MOUSTACHE works by Peter Blake, R.B. Kitaj and Hockney, created during and just after their respective periods of study at the Royal College of Art, including Hockney’s study for We Two Boys Together Clinging.

When Britain Went Pop! looks at an era not only of ground-breaking artists but also of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Swinging 60s. A multimedia and diverse movement, British Pop Art was vividly documented in Bryan Robertson, John Russell and Lord Snowdon’s seminal book from 1965, Private View: The Lively World of British Art, and the catalogue will also illustrate a selection of Lord Snowdon’s original photographs from the book, as well as the film ‘Pop goes the Easel’ and other contextual material to bring this period to life.

Many of these works have come from international collectors, demonstrating the global appeal of the movement. Some of the privately owned works will be for sale. A catalogue will accompany the exhibition, with an essay by the pre-eminent authority on British Pop art, Marco Livingstone, and interviews with artists and key figures of the time.

2013 Vintage clothing and accessories seem to be getting more and more popular by the day. From little vintage shops to stadium-sized kilo vintage fairs, the proliferation of suppliers means that finding a perfect vintage piece can be a daunting task.

H

ours, days or even weeks of rummaging through piles of old, musty, moth-bitten garments or endlessly searching ebay and clicking through hundreds of Etsy startups mean that vintage shopping is, well, hard work. And yet, finding a beautiful vintage dress with a story to tell is one of the most rewarding shopping experiences.

Did she wear it on a first date? How long did it take her to save for it? Did she fall in love with it like I did? All rather romantic ideas, admittedly.

Just as a beautiful vintage dress has a story to tell, so too does vintage jewellery – and arguably more so. Very few things are more sentimental to woman than a beautiful piece of jewellery, often given as a gift by someone special or as a token of love. Yet, quality examples of genuine vintage jewellery can be surprisingly difficult to find both on the high street and online.

BACKGROUND Ayesha Vardag read law at Queens’ College, Cambridge, with a Duke of Edinburgh award for membership of the Inner Temple. She was a Cambridge Wiener Anspach scholar for a Masters in European Law at the Université Libre Brussels. She worked on expert research projects at the International Court of Justice in The Hague and at the UN (IAEA) Legal Division in Vienna and helped draft the nuclear energy Safety Convention.

She qualified and worked initially as a finance solicitor at the global City law firm Linklaters (London, Moscow) and then at the New York law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges in London. She is dual-qualified as a barrister of the Inner Temple and did pupillage at leading professional negligence set 4 New Square. Her training in matrimonial law was as a mini-pupil to Nicholas Mostyn (then QC), then as one of two assistants to Raymond Tooth at Sears Tooth, who hired her away from the Bar after working with her on her own divorce. She has run the family law course at 5 star Law School Queen Mary’s, London.

She set up her own specialist family/divorce law firm, Ayesha Vardag Solicitors, in 2005. The firm incorporated and became Vardags (and the only exclusively family law firm finalist for ‘The Lawyer’ award for ‘Niche Practice of the Year’), in 2010, by which point it had become the go-to firm for some of the weightiest divorce cases in the country. Ayesha’s background as a finance solicitor and barrister contribute to her negotiating skills and litigation savvy, while her personal experience of the divorce courts enables her to address her cases with empathy, compassion and common sense.

he new Governor of the Bank of England recently pledged that he would not consider raising interest rates until such time that the unemployment rate reduces from 7.8% to 7%. He also said that there is only a one in three chance of this happening before the middle of 2015. This is more bad news for savers who have now been suffering historically low interest on their savings pots for over 4 years and a major concern for those people who are reliant upon their savings for income. It is also a problem for those people who are looking to generate high returns on their savings in order to provide capital for specific purposes such as funding for education.

Take for example funding for University Education. The soaring cost of educating children is a hot topic for many parents. The increase in the maximum annual university tuition fee to £9,000 has given an added impetus for the need to plan in this area. Putting a child through university with the attendant tuition fees is just one of the financial pressures facing parents in bringing up their families.

The University of Kent’s annual cost of living calculator for an undergraduate living off campus indicates that the annual cost of living including books, food clothes and travel could be circa £10,078 and as much as £19,906. These estimates do not include the aforementioned tuition fees. Whilst for some, a Maintenance Grant may be available the majority of students rely on parental contributions in conjunction with Maintenance and Fee loans. Typically an undergraduate will accumulate student loans worth £43,500 by the end of their course. Accumulating capital to assist in meeting these costs is difficult enough without having to endure a low return and consequently parents are now looking at the options outside of their ‘comfort zone’.

There are of course alternatives to bank and building society deposits however, achieving an inflation beating ‘real return’ invariably introduces

some risk, meaning that the value of the savings could fluctuate and in some circumstances, result in capital loss.

The key to accessing potentially higher returns is to ensure that the alternative investment does not have a risk profile that exceeds the investor’s own personal attitude to risk and tolerance to loss and to do this requires some in depth discussion and analysis with a financial adviser.

With many of the high street banks now having pulled out of the personal financial advice market, many of their clients have been left ‘high and dry’ and need to seek a new adviser.

Can you bank on the banks?

James Humphreys, Senior Investment Manager at Duncan Lawrie Private Bank takes a close look at the sector…

T

he UK listed banks have been through a torrid time in the last six years. The crisis, which began with queues forming outside branches of Northern Rock, led to considerable Government support for the sector and large stakes in Lloyds Bank and Royal Bank of Scotland. Since then, most banks have gone through a period of internal restructuring and regulation has become tighter thanks to various initiatives. Now that Lloyds Banking Group’s shares have risen above the Government’s purchase price, it is only a matter of time before the Government begins to sell down its stake. So is the rehabilitation of the sector complete?

One reason to think we are nearing the end of this rehabilitation period is that the banks themselves are in far better shape. This may be hard to believe after Barclays’ announcement of a rights issue to raise additional capital, but all the UK banks now have much stronger balance sheets than before the crisis. Barclays has dragged its feet in recent years in raising enough equity and is now playing catch-up. Business models have been simplified and underperforming businesses or assets have been sold or wound down.

In the boom years before the crisis, most of our banks collected businesses, many of them of poor quality, in a huge expansion fuelled by leverage. The banking models that are emerging are far more robust and sustainable.

The other reason to be more confident about UK banking is the gradual improvement in the UK economy. With an election now two years away, George Osborne has turned to the tried and tested method of getting the UK economy moving: namely, stimulating the housing market. Hopefully the economic growth that follows will assist, rather than delay, the economic reforms that the UK desperately needs to compete on the global stage longterm. In the meantime, a buoyant housing market and improving consumer confidence will be fillips for the recovering banking sector.

However, before becoming too optimistic, it is prudent to consider what might go wrong: While the economy is improving, it is still far from strong: we still consume more than we produce, our population is ageing fast and our education system is falling behind our international peers

In terms of the banks themselves, it is too early to say that they are fully transformed – there is still plenty of work to do, particularly for Royal Bank of Scotland, but also for the likes of Barclays and some of the building societies.

Most are still in the process of ridding themselves of poor quality assets and reducing leverage. However, they are in a much better position to deal with these threats than in 2007 and enough has been done for us to be more optimistic about the sector than at any time in the last five years.

he seventh annual Wimbledon BookFest is back, showcasing literature’s leading names and local talent. An enormous, specially commissioned Big Tent on Wimbledon Common will provide the focal point for this year’s festival. Recent commentators seemed to think that, to secure a place at one of the most prestigious Universities, the activities beyond the academic were pointless. Bromley High School’s Head, Louise Simpson, disagrees and wonders what one would find when surveying the first years at this institution?

The likelihood is that virtually every one of them is an enthusiastic and high level performer in sport, music, the arts or some other extra-curricular field.

Certainly, in Bromley High School’s experience, pupils with these additional strings to their bows seem to secure these places. Of course, they are also highly academic, that goes without saying, so perhaps there is a link, perhaps the co-curricular actually develops the academic?

High flying results

F

or the second consecutive year Sydenham High School GDST has seen an increase in the number of students gaining top grades at A Level, along with its consistent 100 per cent pass rate, thus bucking the trend nationally. Seventy-eight per cent of Sydenham High girls achieved A*/B grades, versus 72 per cent in 2012, with over a third securing A*/A in their subjects.

There was also celebration for confirmed university places for the girls taking courses ranging from medicine, physiotherapy and environmental science to law, history, politics and psychology as well as a clutch of places on prestigious art foundation courses.

Celebrations continued with the GCSE results. Despite tougher marking being implemented nationally, the school achieved some remarkable allround performances with an increase in both passes per pupil and points per candidate.

Sixty-seven per cent of students gained A*-A grades and 26 per cent achieved specifically A*s, with four girls achieving the magic number of ten A* grades.

Kathryn Pullen, Sydenham High’s Headteacher, said: “Our girls have once again achieved great results, particularly in a year when it has been harder than ever to score top grades. We are very proud of them. They have had the determination to succeed and will surely continue to further success in their chosen study and career paths.”

treatham & Clapham High School is hosting an exciting new art event, the inaugural Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) Art Exhibition 2013, at its Senior School. Academic excellence from individual attention at Fine Arts College, Hampstead

F

ine Arts College is an independent sixth form college specialising in arts and humanities subjects at A level. It also offers a one-year GCSE programme in a range of subjects in Year 11 and a one-year Portfolio Course for students preparing for art school entry after A levels.

The Ofsted inspection in 2012 rated the College ‘outstanding’ in all aspects.

The College has around 150 students in total, which allows for small class sizes and a lot of individual attention. It prides itself on having a nurturing and co-operative atmosphere in which all the students are individually known and their progress monitored. A system of personal tutorials and internal reports means that students have a weekly opportunity to talk to a personal tutor about their work and any difficulties they may be having.

The College was founded in 1978 by the present joint Principals, Nicholas Cochrane and Candida Cave, and aims to provide an opportunity to study in a mature and stimulating atmosphere that is a unique bridge between school and university. Virtually all students move on to higher education at a range of universities and art, music or drama schools.

The College buildings are in Belsize Park, with the main site in a sunny 14 SEPTEMBER2013

but secluded courtyard. Well-equipped classrooms each have their own specialist subject library and there are art, textiles, music, photography and media studios.

The College is not academically selective and in the light of this its examination results are exceptional. In 2013, 86% of A level entries were graded A*- C and 36% were A* or A grades. Among the many success stories this year one student won a place at Oxford University to study English Literature, two others gained places at UCL to read History of Art and another is heading to Exeter University to study History.

Some students take the creative route to study Fine Art, Graphics or Photography, for example.

GCSE results were equally strong in 2013, with 85% of entries, including Maths and English, scoring A*-C and an impressive 48% of entries achieving A* or A grades.

Admission at A level is based on an interview with the Principals, satisfactory GCSE results and a reference from a previous school.

Why choose an independent sixth form college?

ver recent years independent VI Form colleges have established themselves as very reliable and successful providers of preuniversity education. Most of the best colleges are members of the Council for Independent Education (CIFE). CIFE, founded in 1972, is a national association whose colleges are spread widely over the country, each one offering individual features but all subject to high standards of accreditation.

Details of each college can be found at www.cife.org.uk These colleges offer: a major advantage of independent VI Form colleges over a school’s sixth form lies in the wider range of choice of subjects and much greater flexibility of subject combinations. Most colleges allow you to pick virtually any combination of subjects and there are commonly over forty different AS and A level subjects to choose from. Different types and lengths of A level course are also available. If you want to join a college for the second year of A level, not only will you find many colleges which can provide the right A2 courses, but most will allow you to combine A2 courses with a new AS level or even a subject in which you cover both the AS and A2 during the year. So, apart from the variety of subjects, you will find standard two-year courses, final-year (ie second year) courses, one-year courses (covering AS and A2 modules) and retake courses (both one term and one-year). GCSE courses are also offered at all colleges. Intensive Easter Revision courses at both A level and GCSE are available at many colleges.

Teaching The best colleges, including all CIFE colleges, have experienced and enthusiastic teachers who are A level subject specialists. They are familiar with all the requirements of the various examination boards and are often examiners for the syllabuses they teach.

They often have the advantage of being able to specialise in their subject at a particular level for a particular exam syllabus throughout their whole teaching timetable, unburdened by any lower school teaching requirements.

Independent VI Form colleges offer small group teaching, usually with a maximum of 8 students per class. The informal, relaxed nature of the smallgroup environment enables the teacher to establish quickly and maintain a very productive and beneficial working relationship with you, with close supervision of your work and plenty of individual attention, encouragement and advice. Entrance Academic and pastoral support is a high priority for these colleges.

Their academic advisors keep up-to-date on the latest requirements of the university admissions departments and will make sure that you receive plenty of support in completing your UCAS form as effectively as possible. Some colleges run very sophisticated and targeted programmes of support for students applying for the most challenging university courses, e.g. Medicine.

Why Art A Level is good for your child’s career prospects

oday’s students face intense competition for places at the top institutions. University education is also expensive; and 46 applicants for each graduate job advertised. Given this situation, the perennial parental question - ‘why should my child study Art & Design at A-level?’ - seems unlikely to disappear any time soon.

The Russell Group of top UK universities was no doubt well-intentioned in publishing its list of ‘facilitating’ subjects in 2011. It defined these as those most frequently required by Admissions departments and therefore most likely to offer a range of routes into Higher Education. However, given media and government concerns about falling standards, pupils and parents worried all-too-often that subjects not on the list were second class ‘soft options’, rather than simply more specialist, vocational, or practical (Economics, for instance, did not make the list). The popular perception of Art & Design as merely a relaxing and enjoyable alternative to academic study endured, and with it, the related assumption that to study the Creative Arts at university level is to take an enormous gamble with one’s career chances.

The reality of the situation, however, is that a rapidly diversifying range of undergraduate courses are out there, which lead to very viable creative careers. Architecture and Product Design are obvious popular examples, but many of our former pupils can now also be found working in advertising, branding, fashion, vehicle design, graphics, publishing and illustration.

Prospective Art & Design undergraduates should not be naïve though: just as with any other subject, there are good and bad courses, and the fact remains that graduate employment rates are indeed somewhat lower than in other subject areas. Choosing the right university is critical. It comes as a surprise to many to learn that the best creative courses attract Oxbridge levels of competition – the one-year pre-degree Foundation Course at Kingston attracts well over 1000 applicants for approximately 90 places each year. A further complication is that many of the most-respected specialist courses are not necessarily found at the most famous institutions. Want to study Vehicle Design? Coventry and Northumbria both remain clear world-leaders.

Interested in animation? Bournemouth University is a major specialist. Good research coupled with up to date advice from schools is vital.

There is also a growing trend of graduates from other disciplines joining 22 SEPTEMBER2013

creative industries, having first developed their creative skills while still at school. Recently, we took a group of pupils to visit renowned post-production/ special FX company ‘The Mill’, who were keen to highlight the creative skills shortage they face in the UK. While they of course recruit from specialist graphics degrees, their dream job applicant might have studied Art, Maths and Physics at A-level, before undertaking a ‘good degree from a good university’, maintaining their practical art skills alongside – we were led around the agency by a history graduate, and a chemist. The unfortunate tendency of some schools to pigeonhole pupils into either the Arts or Sciences at an early age is out-of-kilter with the increasingly fluid and collaborative approach of the workplace, particularly in this rapidly developing sector.

Art & Design has the potential to positively affect the quality and circumstances of peoples’ lives, from a vocational viewpoint or indeed from the perspective of recreation. An understanding of the human impulse to express and create, and the satisfying of this urge ought to be seen as fundamental to the development of children. At their best, schools should view Art & Design as an important and integral means through which they can educate. Art is concerned with visual communication and the making of imagery in response to human experiences, and so it can be a major tool through which we learn to measure the world around us, by making judgements concerning issues and relationships, no matter how straightforward, abstract or esoteric they might be.

In my own department, I am delighted that there are usually as many pupils who see Art as their ‘first-choice’ A-level as there are those who see it as their third or fourth; some of our strongest artists have gone on to read Medicine, Law or Engineering. Pupils should be encouraged to find common ground in Art & Design with all their other subjects; in learning how to research context, develop an idea, make their own judgements, resolve problems, work collaboratively, and develop their own personal interpretations and outcomes around a theme or idea.

A-level Art offers pupils the chance to develop and prove their visual literacy.

Coupled with a strong package of other subjects, this ability to decipher and exploit images can really make them stand out from the competition in the multi-media workspaces of an increasingly visual world.

Drama is an important part of both schools’ academic and extra-curricular programmes. With a strong emphasis on personal creativity and devised work, it offers students an opportunity to build something together as a team. It also allows students to express and develop themselves emotionally in a subject where there are few ‘right‘ answers. The subject is taught throughout both schools, focusing on all aspects of practical theatre from direction to design, improvisation to dance, sound and lighting to make-up and costume.

Both schools have a long tradition of excellence in Drama and school plays have always been a muchanticipated fixture in the school calendar. The Senior, Middle and Junior plays each year provide opportunities for students to mix. This year saw sell out productions of 'The Comedy of Errors', performed under the direction of old Haberdasher Danny Fisher, and Salman Rushdie’s 'Haroun and The Sea of Stories'. The Girls’ School summer term ends with a Drama Festival with every form devising a ten-minute play, and Sixth Formers run drama clubs for younger students throughout the year. The Boys' School hold a very successful House Drama Competition each year, uncovering some exciting talent. Both drama departments regularly take students to productions in the West End, South Bank and the London Fringe.

Students have access to state of the art drama studios, equipped with the very latest video facilities and computer operated sound and lighting equipment. The Bourne Hall is one of only five school stages in the UK to be equipped with a fully operational fly tower, allowing for spectacular effects and scene changes. The school’s theatre technician oversees set construction and prop making and there are comprehensive wardrobe and prop stores on site available for use by students.

The 57th BFI London Film Festival, in partnership with American Express, is delighted to announce that this year’s Opening Night will take place on Wednesday 9 October at the Odeon Leicester Square, with the European Premiere of Sony Pictures’ Captain Phillips. It is directed by acclaimed Academy Award® nominee Paul Greengrass (United 93, The Bourne Supremacy) and stars two- time Academy Award® winner Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump, Philadelphia), both of whom are expected to attend the Festival.

Captain Phillips is director Paul Greengrass’s multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is – through Greengrass’s distinctive lens – simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award® winner Tom Hanks), and his Somali counterpart, Muse (Barkhad Abdi). collision course off the coast of Somalia, both men will find themselves paying the human toll for economic forces outside of their control. For each of the tours, a passport will be used to redeem a dish and a drink in each of six participating venues. Some of the restaurants involved include: Amesta, Copita, Fernandez & Wells; Polpo, Massimo, Theo Randall at the InterContinental; Inamo, Tonkotsu and Shoryu.

A favourite since 2009, the LRF Gourmet Odyssey – London’s most original gastronomic road trip in partnership with Champagne Laurent-Perrier – returns with three tours where guests have a course in different restaurants, including a first for the muchtalked-about Shard restaurants: Aqua Shard and Hutong.

Here guests can at once enjoy spectacular food and unrivalled views of the city. The Masters Gourmet Odyssey includes Benares, Wild Honey and Gauthier Soho. On the Discovery Gourmet Odyssey guests will eat at Social Eating House, Gymkhana and Picture.

I think I’ve found a lump in my breast...

What Do I Do?

It is completely understandable that you might worry about the possibility of breast cancer if you find a lump, but remember; most lumps are not cancer. The most likely cause for a lump depends on your age.

Women from 20s to 30s In women from 20 to 30 a definite lump is most likely to be a fibroadenoma.

These are benign lumps that can sometimes be painful or enlarge but they are not cancerous and do not turn cancerous.

Women between 40s and 50s Between 40 and 50 breast cysts becom more common. These are also entirely benign. They are collections of fluid within the breast and although they can also be painful they are not dangerous.

Women aged 30 and onwards From the age of 30 onwards the gland tissue in the breast changes and it becomes more fibrous and nodular. The way the breast feels has been described as like a scaled down packet of frozen peas and occasionally, in just the same way that frozen peas can stick together to form a clump, so breast tissue can “stick together” to form definite nodular areas. These areas are also often tender but, once again, are not a sign of cancer. The rate of breast cancer begins to rise after the age of 40 and increases with age. Of course, breast cancer can occur at any age and I have seen cases in women as young as 19 and in their early 20s, but they are very, very rare.

The important message is, if you notice a change in your breast please get it checked. Let’s go through what you need to do.

The first thing to do is to see your GP and explain what you have noticed.

They will examine you and in some cases may suggest a further check at a different time of your menstrual cycle. Some of the nodular areas can change with the cycle and this is actually a reassuring sign. If a discrete nodular area persists or your GP finds a definite lump, or is unsure, they will refer you to a breast clinic for a full assessment by the breast team. The team should consist of several consultants working together, and includes a surgeon a radiologist and a pathologist. The investigation of any breast problem revolves around, what is called, the triple assessment. It is like doing a jigsaw puzzle; pieces (of information) are collected and put together until the whole picture (the diagnosis) becomes clear. Indeed, this is often termed “the diagnostic jigsaw”.

In some cases only 2 pieces may be needed, in others 4, but 3 (the triple assessment) is most common. Let’s have a look at what the pieces are.

The first specialist you meet will often be the breast surgeon. They will ask questions about your symptoms (called taking your “history”). They will also ask about previous medical problems and your family history. They will then examine both breasts. How the breast feels when it is examined is the 96 SEPTEMBER2013

first part of the jigsaw. If there is a definite area of change then a fine needle aspiration may be carried out. This test uses a normal sized syringe and needle. The needle is placed into the area of the breast and “jiggled” so that a small amount of material is sucked into the syringe. This is sent away to be looked at under the microscope. More commonly now a test known as a core biopsy is done. A core biopsy takes a core of breast tissue about 1.5 cm long and 2 mm in diameter. The core biopsy is carried out by first putting some local anaesthetic into the skin of the breast. Once this has worked (it is quite quick) a small nick is made in the skin to allow the core biopsy needle, attached to the biopsy “gun”, to be placed into the breast. When the “gun” is “fired” (it is painless, but does make a noise rather like a large stapler) the needle takes the sample. This is often repeated a few times. The appearance of the cells that have been removed with a fine needle aspiration, or the result of the core biopsy, is the second part of the jigsaw.

The final part of the triple assessment involves taking images of the breast.

In ladies under 35 an ultrasound scan is the commonest way of doing this.

In ladies over 35 they will have a mammogram as well. Full field digital mammograms are the most sensitive type available at the moment. What an area of the breast looks like on a mammogram or an ultrasound scan is the third piece of the jigsaw.

If the triple assessment produces the same answer at each stage the result is said to be concordant and no further tests may be needed. For example, a lump in a 30 year old lady may feel like a fibroadenoma, look like one on an ultrasound scan and a core biopsy shows pieces of a fibroadenoma.

An important part of the triple assessment that is not commonly mentioned is to watch how things change (or not) with time. It would not be unusual to check things a few months later, repeating some, or all, of the assessment to make sure nothing has changed. A thorough triple assessment may actually be a quadruple assessment! Once again it should be emphasised that in the majority of cases a triple assessment (or a quadruple one) will reveal that cancer is not present. Most symptoms are age related changes or benign lumps. However, it is important that any new change is thoroughly investigated by a specialist to make absolutely sure that all is well.

In this month’s article Healthy Balance Integrated Medicine practitioners share their advice on your health issues.

This issue, Dr. Kate Barnes, Steven Fullagar and Anne Marie Rumbol contribute My 7 year old daughter is very anxious about being left at her new school. She cries at the school gate, and often complains of a tummy ache. She settled in well at her last school. She won’t tell me what is worrying her so how can I help her?

I suffer regularly from headaches, which I get along with a sore neck. My GP says they are ‘cervicogenic’ and to take painkillers when needed, which does help. I would prefer not to take the pills if possible, is there anything else that might help?

It’s interesting that this is a ‘new’ problem. I wonder whether something in her life has changed, whether at home or school.

Sometimes a child is reticent to talk to their Mum about their real fears. It is worth talking to her teacher to see if she has picked up clues. A visit to the GP may be worthwhile to provide reassurance that there is not a physical cause for the tummy ache.

Cervicogenic headaches are onesided chronic headaches that are a result of a neck problem, either from the joints or the muscles causing the pain. This is a common type of headache that often responds well to being treated by manual therapy. Osteopaths will assess the neck joints and muscles and identify any structural issues that are underlying this problem. The root cause may be because of problems with your spine further down or even your jaw! Treatment often includes a combination of massage, mobilization and manipulation if appropriate.

Very often there is anxiety going on in the family that the child is picking up on –could this be the case especially as she is guarded about opening up? Could you be inadvertently transferring anxiety of yours?

The opportunity for her to talk to a trusted professional used to dealing with children may be helpful. In a non-threatening environment it may be possible to clarify the source of the worry, to gently challenge some possible mis-interpretations, and to provide support and advice for you and her.

Another treatment option that may be useful to you is medical acupuncture, which uses very fine needles placed to target the muscle spasm that often causes this type of headaches. Both osteopathy and medical acupuncture can work as a stand-alone treatment or in combination.

I have recently found out that I am pregnant, and I have heard that yoga can be beneficial during pregnancy. I haven’t done yoga before, so what’s the best way for me to start?

Firstly - Congratulations! Since you will be a beginner it is best to wait until the second trimester of pregnancy. Before this time, the energy in your body is really focused on your developing baby, so it is best not to place further demands on your body that it isn’t used to.

I

n modern times we are becoming increasingly aware of the shortcomings of the foods we are feeding our children. Surveys show that children and teenagers are eating higher levels of salt, sugar, and saturated fat than government guidelines recommend, and are failing to reach the five-a-day target for fruit and vegetable portions. This means that they are potentially missing out on vital nutrients that contribute to optimum development.

So, in practical terms, what can parents do to ensure their children develop healthy eating habits? Here are some tips to follow when considering your children and their nutrition: Eat with your children. Children learn by example — make mealtimes enjoyable: set the table, discuss the day’s events, turn off the TV and put on some music or enjoy the silence. ‘Family’ eating not only promotes home-cooked meals, it also fosters a sense of routine and encourages social interaction — all of which lead to better eating habits later in life.

Make food fun! Experiment with new foods and make meals as colourful and as rich in variety as possible. We are naturally ‘turned on’ by diversity — so the more visually stimulating a meal appears, and the more textures it incorporates, the more likely your children will be to tuck in!

Include two portions of vegetables in their evening meal, and provide fruit or a fruit-based pudding for dessert. This will help ensure that your children get three out of five servings of their recommended five-a-day at dinnertime Encourage your children to drink water or sugar-free diluting juice between meals. This will help prevent dehydration, which can lead to constipation and poor concentration.

If you have a fussy eater in the household, don’t give up hope. Try serving the same foods in different forms — for example, people

who dislike the texture of broccoli often find it more palatable in a sauce or soup.

I nclude lean meat or another protein in every meal. This will help keep your children fuller for longer and will discourage snacking later in the day/evening. Red meat will also provide iron — which is particularly important for girls, who tend to eat less red meat of their own accord, yet whose iron needs increase as they begin menstruation.

S erve oily fish twice a week (but no more). These are a rich source of omega oils, which can help keep heart and mind healthy; try salmon, fresh tuna and grilled sardines. If your children find the taste too overwhelming, add seeds to their breakfast cereals for plant versions of these oils.

Pack a healthy lunchbox. ‘Disguise’ vegetables in sandwich fillings, vary the fillings, provide plain yogurt and a piece of fruit that’s easy to eat. Children can be very particular about fruit. Aim to give them small apples, bananas and grapes, which are easy to hold, peel and eat.

M ake sure your children eat breakfast. This will ensure a steady supply of energy to get them through the morning, help maintain attention span and discourage snacking. Fortified breakfast cereals can also be a good source of iron and B vitamins.

Minerals to consider ..

Two particularly important minerals for school-aged children and teenagers are calcium and iron, which help strengthen teeth and bones and prevent anaemia, poor concentration and lethargy respectively.

To ensure that children’s needs are met, include milk and other dairy products, pulses, lean red meat and green leafy vegetables frequently in meals. Foods containing Vitamin C — such as orange juice — can also increase iron intake if drunk alongside iron-rich foods.

O

nce upon a time I had a 1951 MG.TD. It was my pride and joy but I managed to put it through a wall head-on, spun it round and went into the wall again, this time backwards.

That way I even buckled the spare wheel. It was such a lovely car, black with a red radiator grill and red leather interior. I had a reduced silencer fitted to give it a throaty sound when climbing through the gears and a horn that played the signature tune to the Radio programme ‘Take it from Here’. Sadly I can recall the crash in every detail even though it was over fifty years ago, but there we are.

There can be no question that the 1950’s decade was the age of the sports car and the whole range of MGs, from the TA to the TF were among the very best looking. They were quite small but perfectly proportioned and once in the driver’s seat there was this long bonnet in front, big headlamps, running boards and doors cut low to accommodate the casual elbow leaning out.

Even the more sedate town cars and shooting-brakes (estate cars to you and me now) were handsome, to my eyes nothing like the funny characterless bubble shape things we drive around in today. But of course they were not aerodynamic. Had they been so my MG might not have gone into the wall. Research and development into the effects that shape has on stability and economy has resulted in the modern car being probably as safe a machine to drive and inexpensive to run as we could possibly have.

The definitive study of aerodynamics has been made possible by the development of the wind tunnel, the basic origins of which can be traced back to Leonardo da Vinci, but in England to the early 18th century when one Ben Robins (1707 -1751)

invented a whirling arm apparatus to witness the effects of drag. Sometime later Sir George Cayley (1773 – 1857) improved on this but both men were actually studying an object moving through static air whereas the wind tunnel allows the opposite. This occurred to Francis Herbert Wenham (1824 – 1908) during the 1870’s when he built the first enclosed wind tunnel. Its primary use was to improve the possibilities of manned flight and to this end a Swede, Carl Nyberg (1897 – 1922) used one to formulate lift for his early aeroplane, the ‘Flugan’. Probably the most significant development came when Osborne Reynolds (1842 – 1912) showed that a scale model, given the parameters were the same, could be used to replicate wind effects on something full size. This data is still used and known as the Reynold’s Number. Poor Mr. Nyberg however, some thirty years ahead of the Wright brothers, could only manage a few short hops in his steam engine powered flying machine. Several things were against him it seems; one was a poor wingspan ratio, another was an inefficient propeller but worse and most important of all…he was afraid of heights.

Which brings to mind yet another use for the wind tunnel; the safe structure of tall buildings all – hopefully – sorted out by means of lengths of yarn, air bubbles or strands of smoke blasted through an enclosed space at and around scale models to make visible the airflow before you and I venture into them.

All of this above is in response to the considerable interest shown by so many readers when I mentioned military, naval and aeronautical objects in my last article. Naturally it was only a mention – let’s face it, it’s a far cry from 18th century furniture - so for more details I went to a friend of mine at Hatchwell Antiques, a long established firm that enjoys an international reputation as a leading specialists in such things.

These 2 fans are from the 7 by 10 foot High Speed wind tunnel at NASA Langley research centre, Virginia, USA. The tunnel was designed by Langley engineers Thomas A. Harris and Charles J. Donlan, and became operational in November 1945.

Completed at an initial cost of $2,052,000, and located adjacent to a low-speed tunnel of the same dimensions (7 X 10-Foot 300 mph Tunnel), the 7 X 10-Foot High Speed Tunnel (HST) had an atmospheric, single-return circuit with closed throat test section. The 18-blade fixed pitch wooden fan was powered by a 14,000 hp variable-speed electric drive system, and could develop a maximum speed of approximately 675 mph.

Throughout the Cold War era, the 7 X 10-Foot HST facilitated important research on a number of U.S. military aircraft and missiles. The Bell X-5, the world’s first airplane to vary the sweepback of its wings in flight, was tested here in the early 1950s. During the Vietnam War period, extensive testing was conducted on designs submitted by Grumman, Northrop, McDonnell, General Dynamics, and Fairchild Republic for the Air Force’s new Attack Experimental (A-X) Program. More intensive testing of Fairchild Republic’s design in the early 1970s led to the refinement and eventual production of the A-10 Thunderbolt II close support and attack aircraft. Other craft tested in the 7 X 10-Foot HST included Grumman’s A-6E Intruder and EA-6B Prowler, the General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark and F-18 Hornet, as well as the proposed Advanced Manned Launch System, a two-stage, fully reusable launch system consisting of an unmanned glide-back booster and a manned orbiter.

The facility was closed in 1994 and demolished in 2009.

For the amateur enthusiastic or connoisseur collector their shop is a Mecca.

Here you can see how things that were intended for scientific development in peace and war can become objects of great beauty with decorative as well as historical significance. One thing I thought could easily fit into a design scheme with an ancient and modern theme was the wind tunnel model used to test the external airflow over a jet engine. See Pl.I. Talking again of wind tunnels it was interesting to see just how massive these machines were.

In Pl.II you can see a pair from the set of 18 laminated Sitka spruce fan blades made in 1975 for the High Speed wind tunnel at NASA Langley research centre, Virginia, USA. These could produce a wind speed of over 650 mph, but mounted as they are they become monuments to an age of discovery, for each stands 325 cm high. When I look at the illustration Pl.III I think of the line of dialogue in the movie Crocodile Dundee when he says “Now that’s a Knife”. I say “Now that’s a model aeroplane!”

w x 221 d x 135 h cm. The full size aircraft itself has a fascinating history for it was instrumental in the cut-and-thrust of the war in the Pacific. From my point of view as an archivist, it is reassuring to know that this and all such documentation will be forever available for historians in the future. There will be no room for the speculation, vague provenance based on family legend and approximation of age formulated by supposition, all of which have plagued the antiques business to some degree since the late 19th century.

From now on everything is and will be recorded in infinite detail. Thankfully the guidelines as to what may be termed an antique, and therefore revered, have been relaxed and things of historic importance as well as works of art can now qualify. Just think of Classic Cars.

(photograph of model at the Museum of Flying, Santa Monica) DOUGLAS BTD DESTROYER 1943 Early service use of the Douglas SBD Dauntless had convinced the US Navy of its capability as a divebomber: its later wartime record, in such actions as the Battle of the Coral Sea (May 1942) and the Battle of Midway (June 1942), merely provided confirmation. Long before that date, however, the US Navy had initiated the procurement of a more advanced dive-bomber, leading to the development by Douglas of a two-seat aircraft in this category, of which two prototypes were ordered by the US Navy in June 1941.

Designated Douglas XSB2D-1 Destroyer, the first prototype made its initial flight on 8 April 1943. But instead of being ordered into production, it was used as the basis of a new aircraft which the cut-andthrust of war in the Pacific had shown to be more essential. As the XSB2D-1, the prototype was a clean and purposeful-looking two-seat dive-bomber, introducing an internal bomb bay and, for the first time for an aircraft to operate from an aircraft-carrier, retractable tricycle landing gear. The US Navy’s new requirement was for a single-seat torpedo/dive-bomber, and the XSB2D-1 was modified for this new role by conversion to a single-seat cockpit, the addition of two wing-mounted 20mm cannon, enlargement of the bomb bay and the provision of increased fuel capacity. Airbrakes were installed in each side of the fuselage, and the big Wright Cyclone 18 engine of the XSB2D-1 was retained to give the requisite high performance.

A contract on 31 August 1943 increased earlier orders for this aircraft, designated BTD-1 and retaining the name Destroyer, to 358. Deliveries of production aircraft began in June 1944, but only 28 had been delivered before contract cancellation was initiated soon after VJ-Day. The Destroyer’s performance was disappointing and, so far as is known, the type was not used operationally. Two aircraft were provided experimentally with a mixed powerplant, a 680kg thrust Westinghouse WE-19XA turbojet being fitted in the rear fuselage and fed with air through a dorsal inlet aft of the cockpit. Thus designated XBTD-2, the aircraft were the first jet-powered machines of Douglas and the US Navy. A first flight was made in May 1945, but at speeds over 322km/h the downward-angled turbojet could not be used. The project was cancelled in late 1945.

There are various types of loft conversion Dormer Loft Conversion A dormer is a window-featured extension of the roof, which provides more space and headroom within the loft area. Dormers are the most expensive but also the most common type of conversion, as it utilises the available space to the maximum.

Velux Loft Conversion This is the roof window conversion which provides a significant amount of light into the loft space, therefore converting an unused area into a functional space. It is a very economical way of achieving a loft transformation as it is not necessary to restructure the roof itself.

Mansard Loft Conversion A mansard is a specific style of roof with two slopes - the lower slope is steeper than the upper and has dormer windows set into it. This maximises the use of the available space in a loft conversion. However, its installation is complex and expensive, as the entire roof must be replaced. As a consequence planning permission for this type of loft conversion is always required.

Hip to Gable Loft Conversion Most properties have a regular, ‘hipped’ roof with a sloping side resulting limited loft space which makes it difficult to create a loft conversion without extending your property. This type of conversion extends your property on the sloping side, replacing your clopping roof with a vertical wall (the gable) at the same height as the ridge and filling in the spaces in between.

How to create a welcoming hallway E

The hallway is the first room guests see in a house. Make yours warm and welcoming with our inspirational design tips and advice…

ntrance ways tend to be dark and narrow but painting them white isn’t necessarily the best option. “Hallways, especially busy family ones, can take a lot of wear of tear and white be very unforgiving, as well as cold, so a better option, is to choose a light, bright colour in a warm tone. Choose a colour that is a shade or two lighter than the main room the hallway leads to, and it will help create continuity between the two spaces. As this room is primarily a walk-through, you can afford to make a strong design statement and be bold with colour and pattern. Patterned wallpaper with a slight shine will help reflect the light, while vertical stripes can create the illusion of height. If you’re concerned about knocks and scratches, a practical option is to have painted wood panelling on the bottom of the wall, with statement wallpaper above.

Feature flooring Flooring in a hallway needs to be durable but choose wisely and you can create impact while being practical too. If you have a particularly long and narrow hallway, a chequerboard effect on the floor will create the impression of width - the wider the tiles, the wider it will look.

Hallway runners are a great way to inject colour, while colourful striped carpet will instantly enliven a stairway. If you have bare wooden stairs, consider painting each step a different shade of the same colour or have fun with stencils to create patterns or words.

Let the light in Hallways can often be dark, so getting the lighting right is essential. If you

have a high ceiling, a large pendant light will act as a beautiful centrepiece and be the first thing that people see when they enter your home. If the ceiling is low, pendant lights will have the effect of making the room feel smaller, so wall lights are the better option.

Mirrors are a good way to reflect natural light and give the illusion of more space. A large mirror placed at the end of a hallway instantly provides depth, making a hallway feel larger.

Storage solutions Hallways can easily become cluttered so finding a space for coats, keys and shoes is a must. A wooden bench with storage If you have room, offers storage as well as a useful seating area. The more floor space you can see, the larger your hallway will seem and there are lots of great wall-hung cupboards available.

Make a feature Hallways may be small but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a stunning focal point. A narrow console table with a pair of lamps and mirror above makes a pretty focal point - while a vase of fresh flowers or a scented cinnamon candle will create an inviting aroma. A group of family portraits is another great way to add interest and personalise the space. Generally, it’s best to hang fewer, larger pictures as opposed to several smaller ones, as it can make the space seem more confined and cluttered. With a little imagination and the right colours, storage and lighting, you can create an inviting entrance you’ll love coming home to and will want to show off.

Light up your home B Lighting can make a huge difference to a room, affecting how we use a space and whether it feels roomy or cosy. Here’s how to get it right…

efore installing or updating lights, think about how you use each room during the day. A lounge may double-up as an office, the children might need to do their homework on the dining table in the evening or you might use the guest bedroom as a hobby space at night. Multi-functional rooms need to offer ambient as well as task lighting, while open plan living areas may even use pools of light as ‘zones’ in the absence of walls. A flexible scheme where the focus and light levels can be adjusted throughout the day is key - dimmers are ideal as they create mood and allow the room to work from day to night.

Kitchen lighting While a central pendant will provide general lighting, a kitchen requires good task lighting in work areas, especially where you’ll be cooking. Task lighting should be positioned to the side or behind where you’re working – not in front. Many modern kitchen cabinets and cooker hoods come with built-in lights but adding them to existing ones is relatively easy and needn’t be expensive. Mini fluorescent lights can be picked up at most DIY stores (an eight-watt bulb in warm white should work well) and look great when fitted underneath wall units. If you have a central pendant over a dining table, choose one with a flexible cord, which can be pulled down for task lighting when required. To avoid re-wiring, consider fitting a track system with directional lights to highlight the work surface and the sink. While they might take more work to install, ceiling downlights can be placed where needed and because they recessed won’t get covered in grease and dirt.

The lounge is where we’re most likely to use accent lighting - to show off an artwork, ornaments, or even a plant. Think carefully when positioning lights - don’t place downlighters at either end of a sofa if you may change the room layout. Similarly, wall lights are best positioned either side of a fixed feature, like a fireplace. A standing lamp can look good behind the sofa or next to an armchair. Hallway Halls are often dark and lighting can be used to make a warm and welcoming entrance, as well as ensuring safety on the stairs. Create drama by over-scaling a decorative pendant and dimming this for mood, used in conjunction with Polespring LED downlights. Bedroom lighting Most people like bedrooms to be bright in the morning and atmospheric in the evening. School Conversions Are A Hit Most of us are relieved to have left the classroom behind years ago. But when it comes to grand, airy spaces, there’s much we can learn from schools.

T

he Victorians built them a-plenty, and now 20th-century builders are knocking them down or converting them into apartments. The old, draughty turn-of-the-century schools, which are so distinctive all around the country in towns and cities with their imposing exteriors, high gables and large windows, do not lend themselves to modern-

day tuition.

Victorian-built institutions might not suit modern-day teaching methods, but they do make unique homes. The Victorians built their schools to last, with solid woodblock flooring, good acoustic insulation, high ceilings and tall windows to maximise light.

They are also expensive for both private and local authority owners to maintain and keep warm in the winter. And so many schools are being turned into large apartments, with the new residents sometimes lucky enough to have the use of the school grounds, if these have not been sold off separately.

One of the difficulties encountered by developers, is how to deal with what is often a very large room with extremely large windows, typical of Victorian schools which have frequently undergone conversion. Where these rooms have been carved up, the proportions can appear slightly unnatural. If left alone, they can be dramatic, but the sheer size and height of the room and surface area of window can lead to large heating bills.

Some schools have closed down in recent years, and developers are attracted to them because they are easy to convert. They are likely to be structurally sound because the authorities will have inspected them regularly to ensure they comply with health and safety requirements.

Most have leisure amenities, such as tennis courts, well-maintained grounds and a swimming pool.

Buyers considering school conversions should note that often these buildings are short on views, with windows typically placed higher than normal to avoid distracting daydreaming pupils from their studies.

A former public school founded by the Masons, Royal Connaught Park in Bushey, Hertfordshire, has certainly had a colourful history since its closure.

At one time an American university visited by John F Kennedy, it then became a film set for productions including the original St Trinian’s, Harry Potter and Little Britain. Now converted into luxurious flats and houses, “no two properties are the same” says Comer Homes’ marketing director Caroline Comer. Prices range from £399,000 up to £2.1 million.

It would be easier for developers to knock a school down and start from scratch, but maintaining the originality of the schools architecture, space and characteristics, increasing its value considerably.
